Researchers recently discovered that people who eat a larger variety of foods experience healthier sleep patterns. Michael Grandner, an instructor in psychiatry and member of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, conducted the study with six colleagues, using data from the 2007-2008 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Normal sleepers (seven to eight hours) ate the most wellrounded diet, and short sleepers (five to six hours) ate the leastvaried diet. Short sleepers also consumed the most calories, followed by normal sleepers, very short sleepers (fewer than five hours) and long sleepers (nine or more hours).

Researchers are still determining what impact altering one’s diet would have on his or her sleep patterns.

Forty clinical sites in the U.S. are conducting the study, sponsored by the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

ANDI stands for Aggregate Nutrient Density Index, and it is the scale Whole Foods Market uses to measure the nutrient densities of foods. The amount of micronutrients in foods, including vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidant capacities, is measured on a scale of 1 to 1,000.

Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) is a survey that assesses patients’ experiences during their hospital stays. The survey is given to a random sample of adult patients between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge; study results are reported quarterly.

Merv Hess has never battled a lifethreatening cancer.

But that doesn’t mean the PalmAire resident isn’t well acquainted with disease — one that took both his parents before Hess turned 25 years old.

His mother died of breast cancer when she was 48; Hess was 24, then.

His father had died of leukemia when Hess was just 1.

“It gives me a kinship to people who are journeying the road (of cancer),” Hess says. “I like to journey with people through the thick and the thin.”

Hess, who retired from the medical field as chief operating officer of Blake Medical Center in 2005, now turns his attention to providing care for those in need through the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation to cancer patients who need rides to and from chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Program volunteers either can drive patients to appointments, like Hess, or they can help as coordinators, helping to match the needs of clients with the availability of drivers.

Hess, who has been a volunteer

driver for about five years, relishes the opportunity.

“It isn’t an easy part of people’s lives,” Hess says. “If I can make a little difference — driving them, hearing their story if they choose to share it — I’m here to support them.”

Given Hess’ family history of cancer, he knew he wanted to get involved with the American Cancer Society after he retired. The Road to Recovery program seemed like a “perfect fit” for Hess, who loves to interact with people and who also enjoys driving.

Hess says he loves the flexibility Road to Recovery offers him as a volunteer; it allows him to work around personal commitments and other volunteer work with Tidewell Hospice and with the Selby Library, for example, and directly impacts people’s lives.

Through a program coordinator, Hess learns the needs of Road to Recovery participants and then can see if he’s available to take them to and from a particular appointment. Hess travels throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties to pick up patients and can drive up to 50 miles round trip for one appointment. He averages one appointment per day but often schedules secondary trips.

Road to Recovery drivers use their own vehicles and pay for their own gas, so they can limit their drive time and distance, as needed, through the appointments they select.

Anastasia Jacobs, patient services manager of the mid-coastal and south Gulf areas of the American Cancer Society’s Florida division, says the need for volunteers is critical, because transportation, for many cancer patients, can be the primary obstacle for getting necessary care.

“Often times, there are people who don’t have family here,” Jacobs says.

“Radiation, when it’s done, is (only) days (or) weeks, but it’s 10 minutes at a time. It’s hard to get people to commit to that. It puts a huge burden on family and friends. “(Many of) these patients have no way to get to their treatments,” she says. “Most of the time, they can’t (take themselves) because they are so ill. It’s very taxing on your body to get

through those treatments.”

Jacobs says the task of transporting clients — though simple — can be what saves lives.

“It’s an extremely rewarding endeavor,” she says. “It’s really a way to give back. You really are helping to save a life.”

Hess agrees, on both accounts.

He says he’s loved building relationships with Road to Recovery participants, because he drives many of them for several weeks at a time while they undergo radiation and cancer treatments.

“These clients end up becoming my friends,” he says.

And, knowing his work is making a difference brings a smile to his face every time.

“Volunteering is rewarding,” Hess says, grinning. “(In retirement), I could play golf. I could do things for Merv.

But, it’s not nearly as rewarding.”

The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program helps cancer patients travel to life-saving chemotherapy and radiation cancer treatments.

Through the program last year, the ACS coordinated rides to treatment for more than 3,100 patients in Florida.

A critical need for services remains. Individuals can get involved as a volunteer program coordinator or as a driver.

Coordinators need access to Yahoo email and a phone. The program is offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Approximate time to fulfill duties is one to six hours per week, varying by the number of patients requesting services.

Drivers must be able to provide safe, reliable transportation, have proof of car insurance, have a good driving record and have a current, valid driver’s license.

Seventy-one-year-old Greenbrook resident Ron Turner may be a picture of health because his genetics made it so — his 99-yearold mother only succumbed to a walker this year.

But, it’s also because he’s promoted wellness since his 20s.

A retired U.S. Air Force industrial hygienist, Turner worked with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health from 1967 to 1972 as a field engineer, promoting health to children.

Still learning healthy habits himself — Turner previously pretty much lived on beer and rice — he organized 13 villages to find the manpower to build a dam.

He helped the villagers construct water wells, mix concrete and sift sand.

In summer 1972, Turner traveled to Guam for a temporary assignment. And there, Turner bought a rickety bike and rode around the island, stopping occasionally to mingle with the locals.

There, he also gained an affinity for racquetball and flag football.

His next Air Force assignment brought more serious fitness — three-hour, 50- to 60-mile bike rides with his base mates in the dry air of Tucson, Ariz., free weights and a flag-football championship shared by his medical team.

Turner came in 2003 to Lakewood Ranch to find bike paths along Lakewood Ranch Boulevard peaceful enough, until, on one ride, a pickup truck brushed his front wheel, throwing him hipfirst onto the road.

Turner broke his upper leg and had half his hip replaced after the crash. He also lost all sense of safety regarding outdoor biking.

Now, a steel ball in his right hip keeps Turner’s legs churning during spin classes with Sandy Birczak at SPIN FIT in the East County.

As the elderly statesman — though don’t call him “old” — in a sea of young faces on the black-andyellow bikes at the 1,300-squarefoot SPIN FIT, Turner maintains order.

He takes classes six days a week there, maintaining a regimen of spinning, TRX workouts and core training.

Though his wife, Evelyn, who occasionally peeks in on him during spin classes, wishes she could see more of him, Turner can’t stop.

“I just feel good being fit,” Turner says. “It’s become a way of life for me. And I don’t think of age when I’m out there. I just don’t.

I don’t relate to people chronologically my age. I’m surrounded by young folks here (at SPIN FIT) and the enthusiasm I get from that gives me a youthful outlook on life.”

On the unique benefits of TRX training: “I had major tears in both rotator cuffs from playing softball,” Ron Turner says. “I couldn’t lift my arm to put coffee in the microwave. I developed my deltoids to compensate, and (now) I can. I also had poor posture, what I called the ‘geriatric stoop.’ I feel taller now. I stand straight up with my shoulders back.”
