“There’s a lot more that has to be done with the program — not that it’s not going well, but we still have lots more to do,” Margaret Barbieri says.

tarting around 7 a.m., the 12 students enrolled in the inaugural class of The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory of Dance go to school like the rest of their non-dancing peers.

They solve algebraic equations, conduct chemistry experiments, write essays on Shakespeare and learn about the great wars of history. Some are home-schooled; some attend classes at local schools.

What’s different about these students is that after ending a full day of school, they begin another full-course load.

At 2:30 p.m., when many of their peers go home to do homework and relax until bedtime, these talented students take classes such as pointe, pas de deux, character, Pilates, contemporary and more. Then, at around 9 or 10 p.m., they go home. They average 40 hours per week studying dance alone.

“As a dancer, I find you never become stagnant and stop learning,” Margaret Barbieri, assistant director of the Sarasota Ballet, says.

“Initially, I was just putting my name to it,” she says. “But, when you put your name to something, you want to be a little more involved.”

Barbieri worked with Webb and Education Director Dex Honea to create a well-rounded curriculum that will achieve the best results. Honea says she’s not the mom, but more the “queen” of the conservatory.

“She has the big experience and the most experience in the whole company and program,” Honea says. “She’s very handson.”

That “big experience” he’s referring to was in 1990, when Barbieri started the Classical Grauduate Programme at London Studio Centre.

“I’ve been teaching for 22 years directing a vocational program, which I devised myself,” she says.

Eventually, the program became a three-year bachelor of the arts degree program, and she has the same hopes for the Sarasota program.

Barbieri oversees everything, from who is accepted into the program, to fine-tuning the schedule of classes, to making sure the students aren’t overworked. She meets regularly with the faculty.

She has watched the students make what she calls an “incredible progression.” She mentions the impressive growth they made from November, again in December and January to now.

She’s proud of the students and was impressed with their performance in December at the regional semifinals of Youth American Grand Prix in Tampa — the world’s largest ballet scholarship competition featuring the nation’s top ballet schools.

“I thought they stood out as being one of the top schools,” she says. “And I’m not being biased. I wouldn’t be saying it if I thought it wasn’t good.”

In fact, a 14-year-old conser-

vatory student, Caitlin Gish, will compete in the finals this spring in New York City.

And that’s not all. The conservatory’s Yamil Maldonado will join the company of Sarasota Ballet in the next season, setting the precedent for other graduates in the program.

Barbieri thinks the program is on point, but she still has hopes for further growth. She’d like the conservatory program to become a degree program, so stu-

dents have the option of studying professional dance while working toward a degree.

“I’d certainly hope to do some teaching, but this year hasn’t been possible,” she says. “But they have wonderful teachers.

So far, Barbieri is enjoying her role watching from the wings.

“It’s important for the conservatory to find its feet and for the teachers to know they are in charge, not me,” she says.

Barbieri was 16 when she began her studies at The Royal Ballet School in London. She grew up in South Africa, where she received personal dance coaching, and by age 10 she had caught the attention of The Royal Ballet School.

“My father kept saying, ‘You’re not old enough. You can’t go there,’” she says. Edward Barbieri, her older brother, finally convinced her father to let her study at the school.

Like many of the school’s students who go on to dance in professional companies, Barbieri joined The Royal Ballet Touring Company, which launched her 25-year dancing career. She hopes the students in her namesake school will one day feed into Sarasota Ballet’s company, for which her husband, Iain Webb, is the director.

“He always felt (Sarasota Ballet) needed something special for the gifted students who have potential to get into a company,” Barbieri says of Webb.

There is already an educational program in place, the Sarasota Ballet School. That school provides instruction for students of all ages and skill sets. But Barbieri’s school is a specialized program devised to help prepare young dancers so they might turn their passion into a classical ballet career.

In 2012, Webb and Sarasota Ballet’s Managing Director Mary Ann Servian approached Barbieri about the idea of the program and asked her if she’d be OK with them naming the pro-

On Friday, March 8, NewGate School presented a full-fledged production of the Japanese children’s opera, “The Burning Rice Fields,” at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center.

This program, brought by Youth Opera International, gives students ages 6 to 12 years old the opportunity to take the stage alongside professional opera singers, in costumes performing choreography in a professional theater.

Teagan Allen, a fifth-grader at NewGate School, wrote a note to Sanford and Judy Jones, co-directors at Youth Opera International, that opera week is: “My favorite week of the whole year.”

One girl asked Booker why she dresses in tribal wear, to which Booker responded, “I am an artist and every day when I get up, I ask myself, ‘How can I create today? How can I sculpt myself to be a creation?’”

Booker came to Sarasota in 2011 for Season of Sculpture’s exhibit and was invited back to exhibit March 14 through April 7, in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune building.

Booker told the girls becoming an artist requires focus and commitment, and she asked them if they knew the meaning of those words.

One girl responded, “Focus means to concentrate really hard.” The next said, “Commitment means to have a dream and never give up.”

// Sarasota Orchestra: ‘Made in America’ The Sarasota Orchestra’s Masterworks concert this past weekend was titled “Made in America” and featured a quartet of pieces that, in one way or another, represented American culture. Fittingly, it featured an American guest conductor, Andrew Grams, who is probably — of all the guest conductors who’ve come to Sarasota in the past several years — the most technically gifted.

Interestingly, Grams is an extremely European conductor. Perhaps his work with the Cleveland Orchestra — probably the most European of all the major American symphonic ensembles — has trained him to take a more conservative approach to his conducting. Whatever it is, it serves him well except for the moments when his excellent technique stands in the way of his emotions.

Technique seemed at the forefront in the program’s first two works, starting with a charming piece called the “Tamiami Sinfonietta.” This four-movement work was composed by children from four area elementary schools who came up with inventive, catchy and fascinatingly American melodies, which Greg Smith (not to be confused with Gregg Smith, the choral conductor/composer) scored. Each movement had its own flavor ranging from a minor-key march to a jazzy, syncopated finale (with a lot of John Williams-like harmonies) and the orchestra, under Grams, gave the work a serious but exciting treatment.

Irving Fine, whose fun choruses from “Alice in Wonderland” Gloria Musicae performed a few years ago, wrote in the first half of the 20th century, turning out symphonic, chamber and vocal music that is very much of its time and place. His “Toccata concertante,” written in 1947, has an early 20th-century American sound and

combines tonality with jazz, open fourths and fifths, lots of percussion and complex rhythms that make it accessible, yet interesting. Grams and the orchestra gave it a texturally layered performance that was precise but colorful.

The Piano Concerto in F was a relatively early George Gershwin work, in which the young composer hadn’t yet had the classical training he would have in the later years of his short life. Some say he was trying to prove he could write a serious classical piece and, as intricate and difficult as it may be to play, it is a fine example of American ingenuity combined with traditional European musical practices.

That’s exactly the reading it received by the orchestra with Grams and pianist William Wolfram. The first movement was particularly serious, with every note in place but a certain lack of soul. The adagio and finale, however, picked up a spark, and Wolfram’s own faultless technique carried with it some beautiful colors while Grams brought out the vast dynamic range of the orchestra, especially from the brass section.

Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” gave Grams an opportunity to feel more at home. Here, the composer’s take on American life, weaving folk songs and traditional American rhythms and melodies into a European fabric, brought the admirable musicianship of the individual Sarasota Orchestra musicians to the forefront, and there was no lack of soul this time around. Grams gave it an impassioned, gorgeous performance, highlighted by exquisite playing from all the instrumentalists, particularly the English horn solo in the slow movement, the unrivaled artistry of the French horn solos and the sensitive clarinet and cello duet in the finale.

Grams has musicianship and technique to burn. I look forward to a time when he unleashes the passion that seems simmering beneath the polish. When he does that, he’ll be at the top of the conducting pool in this country.

Bruce Norris, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 2010 play, “Clybourne Park,” wants to get in your face, down your craw and up in your business. His provocative, satiric comedy cleverly skewers all in sight with its uproarious, liberating exposure of everyone’s inner racist. His characterizations are extremely well observed portraits of human personality traits we are all familiar with but to which we may not have put words.

Sublimated feelings pop out of the actors like alien monsters out of space travelers’ chests.

The point of the play goes well beyond simple racism, which is shown to be, most importantly, a product of self interest unchecked by fairness.

It speaks to our culturally long-held, destructive tribalism, symbolized by a dead, but ever present character, the protagonist’s soldier son who committed suicide after being convicted of killing civilians during the Korean War. The play garnered a Tony Award for best play after it appeared in 2012 on Broadway.

The story takes place in the same suburban Chicago house as the African-American couple

was buying in Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun.” In Norris’ story, the house belongs to the white family living there in 1959 who sell the house to them, thus precipitating a turnover to an all-black district. This results in a conflict with the neighbors, which is the basis for Act I. In Act II, it’s 2009 and the tables are turning again. Whites are buying into the historically significant, downtown-adjacent properties. Another confrontation takes place, this time between the black owners and their new white neighbors who want to turn their vintage charmer into a McMansion.

Michael Donald Edwards directs with no holds barred, thoroughly exploring the boldly written dynamics of the explosive situation and its hilarious characters, who are played by a dynamite cast in dual roles, one in each act. Each part is performed with wonderful wit and nuance by an excellent troupe of actors who have by now become familiar, but never fail to thrill and delight. Douglas Jones plays Russ in Act I, and Dan in Act II; Annabel Armour plays Bev and Kathy; Tyla Abercrumbie is Francine and Lena; Jesse Dornan plays Jim and Tom; Christopher Wynn plays Albert/ Kevin; David Breitbarth is Karl/Steve; Sarah Brown plays Betsy and Lindsey; and Jacob Cooper plays Kenneth.

into the history of the conflict: the 1982 Lebanon War, the 1993 Oslo Accords, the rise of the Jewish radical right led by extremist rabbis and the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, just for starters.

The dichotomy of having six men whose motto is “defender who shall not be seen” spilling the beans is extraordinary. They’re proud men, patriots who admit Israel has become a “police state.” The hope lies in the fact that they realize what has to be done and are sharing it with the world. Pay attention.

How open should a counter-terrorism agency be when talking about sanctioned violence? In the Oscar-nominated documentary, “The Gatekeepers,” six former members of the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency) open up about covert activities.

Their revelations are shocking, disturbing and, sadly, bleak.

The audience gleans historical perspectives through a narrative of events. In 1967, after the Six Day War, 1 million Palestinians came under Israeli control. Shin Bet operatives were sent into Palestine after becoming fluent in Arabic. They lived among the people and recruited individuals as potential informants. But as the rise of the more extreme Hamas and Islamic Jihad evolved, things got out of hand. The Shin Bet interviewees all admit (to their collective dismay) there was no strategy, just tactics.

As director Dror Moreh interviews all six of the surviving former heads of the Shin Bet, he doesn’t shy away from asking the tough questions. And, surprisingly, the men are candid about torture, drone attacks, collateral damage and the lack of morality pervasive within their ranks. But, as one admits, “We paid a horrible price for our military actions. We are completely isolated from our neighbors.” And another boldly observes, “We win every battle, but we lose the war.”

Amazingly, all six men believe the only option left for peace between Israel and Palestine is talk. They admit it’s senseless to prolong human suffering. One even cites that the nation’s army is “a brutal occupation force that is similar to the Germans’ in World War II.” That must be a two-state solution is a consensus they all share.

“The Gatekeepers” is astounding on so many levels. We witness decades of events (through archival footage) in the Middle East, chronologically, lending vast insight

Sarasota Film Festival prepares to launch 15th year

Sarasota Opera hosts Verdi exciting concert No one in the world, in all of time, has ever played every note Giuseppe Verdi ever composed. In fact, no one in the world has ever performed every note any composer has ever composed — until 2017, when Sarasota Opera completes the 27-year-long process of performing all of Verdi’s works.

The opera will celebrate the composer’s birthday this season, and no one else’s, even though the world of opera celebrates three big anniversaries this year: Benjamin Britten’s centennial birthday, and Richard Wagner’s and Verdi’s bicentennial birthdays.

Maestro Victor DeRenzi could be biased, because he has spent 23 of his 31 years at Sarasota Opera producing Verdi’s work. He sees The Verdi Bicentennial Concert March 24, as another step toward the completion of The Verdi Cycle.

The first year Sarasota Opera performed Verdi was 1989, but DeRenzi didn’t decide to launch the full cycle until the company performed one of Verdi’s practically unknown operas, “Aroldo,” the next year. The opera received a standing ovation after that performance.

“They felt they were at a premiere,” he says. “I thought, ‘If the audience reacted this way to this, then maybe there are more operas that should be done.’”

Within the next couple of years, DeRenzi began his quest to perform every note by Verdi — from the popular to the lesser-known.

performed, or an aria written for a specific singer to replace a different aria.

To complete the cycle, these stand-alone pieces require the opera to perform additional concerts separate from Verdi’s full operas. Verdi’s October birthday is the perfect excuse to perform these types of works, DeRenzi suggests.

For instance, during The Bicentennial Concert, the company will perform two pieces Verdi wrote for “King For a Day” but have never been performed. DeRenzi discovered these two pieces on the back of the autographed score, meaning Verdi’s original handwritten score.

“Some of his music only exists in his autograph,” he says.

It’s a treasure hunt to track down these handwritten gems, and DeRenzi compares it to finding a new book by Charles Dickens that has never been published. Until now, DeRenzi has mostly been on a solo hunt, but he hopes to hire a scholar to help track down the remaining works in the next four years so they can be sure to find all the treasured pieces. The closer

the company gets to the end of the cycle, the harder it is to locate these pieces.

For instance, Verdi wrote an aria for Sophia Löwe to perform during the production “Joan of Arc,” and scholars believe she was the only person in possession of the music. The soprano eventually became the princess of Liechtenstein, so many scholars have traveled there to find it, but none has been successful. DeRenzi suggests it might not still exist. But, if it does, it’s sure to be performed by the Sarasota Opera.

The opera’s Verdi concerts are some of the only instances in which these songs have ever been heard or performed; although, the bicentennial concert is also intended to celebrate Verdi with some of his popular work, such as the Triumphal scene from “Aida” and some previously performed work. But, as long as Verdi wrote it, DeRenzi is content in directing it.

Junior League gets interactive with home tour

 Learn to make festive water bottles for occasions such as a baby shower or a little girl's birthday party with ribbon and tulle pom-poms.

The Junior League of Sarasota is putting a new twist on this year’s home tour, which runs Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. Home tours have become popular in Sarasota, and although perusing other people’s unique homes can be fascinating, it can also be a bit daunting.

The last thing anyone wants to do is knock over that priceless vase in the center of the living room, but those fears can be cast aside, because Junior League’s Simply Sarasota Entertainment Tour of Homes is all about feeling at home and being part of the party fun.

Jill Berg, public relations cochairwoman, noted the new direction of this year’s tour focus-

es more on learning and having fun rather than the “look but don’t touch” feel.

“You can actually go to this (home tour) with your friends and have a good, fun day,” says Berg.

Each of the four homes on the tour will have its own theme — guests will be able to not only look at but participate, as well.

Crafts include cupcake decorating, creating party favors, learning the proper way to set a table for a formal dinner party and how to decoratively paint a wine glass. Each home will offer something for all five senses and ideas for any party, whether it be a child’s birthday, a bridal shower, a formal tea, a wine tasting or a backyard barbecue.

 At the "Family Heritage"-themed home, guests will learn how to decorate cupcakes with style and flair for a variety of different occasions.

Foxy ladies and hunky men showed up in their ’70s best to the Senior Friendship Centers’ fourth annual “Madcap Evening” Tuesday, March 12, at the Senior Friendship Center. It takes a village to pull off such a groovy event to kick-off the Senior Friendship Centers 40th anniversary. Harold Ronson and Molly Schechter chaired the Madcap Evening along with honorary Chairwoman Betty Schoenbaum. Phil and Julie Delaney will oversee all of the 40th anniversary events throughout the year.

More than 221 guests, the event’s biggest crowd, had the opportunity to check out some far-out ’70s vehicles; relive their favorite fashions with an informal modeling of ’70s fashions styled by Purabell House of Fashion; take funny photos in a photo booth; and bid on some rad items during the silent auction.

Phil Mancini of Michael’s On East served up a decade-appropriate dinner that included dishes inspired by famed food personalities Alice Waters, Bert Greene, Perla Myers and Julia Child.

To cap off the Madcap Evening, there was a “Swinging ’70s Revue,” featuring pop hits by Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Broadway’s best by Jamie Day and Steve Dawson.

Larry and Debbie Haspel used that quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson in accepting the 2013 Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee on March 17, at Michael’s on East — and that spirit was much in evidence throughout the evening.

Their daughter, Leesa, 25, a student at Northwestern University Law School, described her family’s modus operandi as, “We’re Haspels, we just do it,” and said that on her first visit to Sarasota, she discovered that her parents had signed her up “… to serve breakfast at Kobernick House on Christmas day, tour Nate Benderson’s animal rescue facility and string 10,000 pearls for the Perlman Music Program Gala.”

Event Co-Chairs Warren and Margot Coville and David and Edie Chaifetz spoke about how much the Haspels have accomplished in their four short years here with their work on behalf of the Jewish Housing Council, Asolo Rep, Sarasota Ballet, Perlman Music Program and Embracing Our Differences, as well as the American Jewish Committee.

Jewel Ash, décor; Carolyn Michel, entertainment, and “poster man” Charlie Boothby. The record-breaking silent auction, on the other hand, had an all-new team led by Co-Chairs Ingrid BookbinderKeating, JoAnn Nevins and Sunny O’Flynn. Other new Gloria Moss players were the vintage car guys: Doug Foeller (Dodge Dart and Good Humor truck), Bob McVaugh (dune buggy) and Dan Slottke (Firebird Trans Am).
