Camera increase ramps up enforcement citywide U.S. 41 and University Parkway’s cameras take the crown for the most red-light violations. In January, the city added three additional red-light cameras to busy Sarasota intersections, increasing the total number of the high-resolution, high-speed cameras to 10 citywide. Police say the cameras make

roadways safer. Sarasota Sgt. Bryan Graham points to a 15.38% overall reduction in accidents/ citations at the intersections that have had the cameras in place for at least a year. However, the motorists who

get a notice of violation might not be the cameras’ biggest fans. Nick Russell was on vacation in Sarasota from Brattleboro, Vt. the week of March 5. Earlier in the week he was in Miami, a location that has been using the red-light camera system since

+ Ikebana exhibit is a floral fête The Sarasota Chapter of Ikebana International held its 45th anniversary exhibition Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Ikebana is the art of Japanese floral design, which dates back to the sixth century and the advent of Buddhism, in Japan. The theme of the event was, “An Ikebana Spring,” and featured Japanese blue-and-white textiles and ceramics, as well as more than 45 Japanese flower arrangements.

Low voter turnout a trend in city elections Two former city commissioners point to different factors for low voter turnout in Sarasota. One says a date change would bring more voters to the polls. Residents are talking about the City Commission candidates and the issues the city faces. “No matter where I go, I get bombarded with people asking

questions about what I think of this candidate or that candidate,” said former Mayor Mary Anne Servian. The following candidates are running for the City Commission March 12: Suzanne Atwell, Susan Chapman, Richard Dorfman, Linda Holland, Kelvin Lumpkin and Pete Theisen. In the final

days leading up to the election, candidates for the two at-large City Commission seats are using social media or traditional campaign tactics, such as mailers, to get voters to the polls. On Monday, March 4, as early voting began, challenger Richard Dorf-
