“The more I (played) it, the more I liked it — there was a connection,” Andrew Lane says.

hen 52-year-old Sarasota Orchestra Principal Pops Director Andrew Lane signed up for shop class in seventh grade, the school administration put him in band, instead, because the shop-class’ roster was full.

The band needed French horn players — so Lane took up playing the instrument.

Three weeks later, a spot in shop class became available. Despite his father’s encouragement to take the spot, Lane decided against switching classes. He had already connected with the horn and stuck with it through middle and high school.

After he won a concerto competition his senior year, Lane’s high school orchestra director, Linda Groh, encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional musician.

“I didn’t think it was reality, and I couldn’t imagine the luxury of (playing) professionally,” he says.

Lane’s father, also named Andrew, was a foreman for a company that made electrical parts; his mother, Frances, was a credit manager at a lumber company.

Although both parents had an appreciation for music, they didn’t understand how playing music could become a career.

“That really drove me to want to do it,” Lane says. “I wanted to show them that it was possible to be a professional musician.”

After high school, Lane’s passion led him to audition for University of South Florida’s band as a French horn performance major, and he was accepted into the school. His USF teacher, Ralph Froelich, played principal horn

Thanks to Froelich, in 1980, Lane played with Sarasota Orchestra, and, then, the next year at Sarasota Music Festival.

In 1986, after his third year of college, Lane moved to Washington, D.C., to play as a paid musician in The United States Navy Band. That was the start of his professional music career. He was 21 years old.

In 1990, he moved to Florida and continued playing professionally for 10 years with Florida Orchestra, in Tampa, and also the Symphony Orchestra, in Orlando.

But in 1994, his passion for music led him to start conducting. For several years, his eyes went straight to one line of the

score — the horn part.

He’s now been a conductor for two decades, serving as the music director of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra in Orlando, where he has been conducting the program of 250, and for the past 10 years, conducting the Sarasota Orchestra Pops series. Starting in 2002, he conducted Sarasota Youth Orchestra for five years.

Lane drives back and forth from Orlando, where he lives, to Sarasota to rehearse with the orchestra a few weeks out of the year.

He considers the musicians in the Sarasota Orchestra colleagues.

“I have this anxiety that I show up, and I have totally forgotten to prepare,” he says about a recurring dream, “and when you’re standing in front of 70 excellent musicians, that’s a pretty scary nightmare.”

When Lane started as the Pops principal director, it was not yet a series, but a few pops concerts throughout the season. He’s watched it grow into a series. This year it doubled in concerts. At first, Lane was concerned about filling double the seats, but, to his relief, the first program in the Pops series, January’s “Bravo Broadway,” came close to selling out and garnered great reviews.

Lane is most looking forward to the Sinatra program, “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” which starts in April, because he says guest artist Michael Andrew is an amazing performer.

Lane thinks highly of the group of musicians he says expertly play a wide variety of music featured in the Pops series.

Lane says each section of the orchestra has its own personality.

tion are tough because they play the dramatic parts; the woodwinds possess a lot of finesse in life, just like in playing; and the string players are versatile and all-encompassing players who have a broad personality, ranging from light-hearted to dramatic.

His audience also has a particular personality that Lane has come to know.

During the past decade, he has developed a sense of what his audience enjoys. It’s important to Lane that each audience member finds something to connect with in the series — variety is key. As he plans a Pops series, he keeps one question in mind: “Are they going to look at the series and get excited?” He’s sure the series will excite them.

“There’s this feeling that we’re really becoming connected, and we look forward to seeing each other,” Lane says of the audience.

Things you didn’t know 1. Lane has two sons: Chris is a trumpet player in the Coast Guard band, and Alex is a French horn player at Manhattan School of Music.

2. Lane loves working on, fixing up and selling old cars and has since he was in high school. He passed this pastime onto his son, Alex, whom he taught to fix up Camaros.

3. In 1996, Lane became the first general manager of Orlando Philharmonic. He left there in 2010.

4. Lane says the highlight of his career was in 2006, when he conducted The Chicago Symphony featuring Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis.

5. Lane worked for a car dealership upon graduating high school, but hated it and decided to pursue music.

 Sister act steals The spotlight Lakewood Ranch High School students Sophia and Marina Masterson earn above-average grades and are completely immersed in the area’s arts organizations.

Their parents, Peter and Teresa Masterson, hear a recurring argument between 15-year-old Sophia, who says, “It’s harder to be a singer,” and 17-year-old Marina who says, “No, it’s harder to be a dancer.”

In November, Sophia played Flip, the lead villain, in Sarasota Youth Opera’s “Little Nemo in Slumber-

land.” She also plays the French horn, is on the track team and is currently rehearsing for Lakewood Ranch High School’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

“Opera takes a lot of training to strengthen your voice,” Sophia says. She looks at her sister: “It does tie into dance a little bit.”

Despite the argument, the sisters respect and support each other.

Marina dances with Sarasota Ballet School, plays clarinet and is a varsity cheerleader at Lakewood Ranch High School. She saw an article seeking dancers for the Sarasota Opera’s production of “The Pearl Fishers,” auditioned and will now be performing on the same stage as her sister recently did.

“You have to give respect to the singers because, without them, we wouldn’t have anything to dance to,” Marina says. She explains that when she and her sister argue, it’s more of a joke. To prove her point, she says, “Dance is obviously more difficult.” Both sisters giggle.

Sophia and Marina’s older siblings, Cole and Bianca, who are in college now, were involved in the arts, too. And their youngest sister, Gina, is 11 years old and is following in Marina’s footsteps. The whole family sat in the audience to watch Gina perform in Sarasota Ballet’s “The John Ringling Nutcracker.” The family frequently attends area theaters to see ballet, opera and orchestra programs.

“The Great American Trailer Park Musical” cast

 Trailer Park hosts family reunion For the third year, Venice Theatre will host “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” In 2011, its first year playing at Venice Theatre, it sold out, and, as the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The hilarious musical is full of repeat cast performances offering scenes of spray cheese, road kill, strippers and pregnancy.

Actor Travis Rodgers is preforming for a second year. Actress Danae DeShazer played Lin in her debut last year; she’ll play Pippi this go-around. Stage Manager Linda Kochmit is in her second

year, as is Melanie Souza and Laura Priscilla Hoffman. Kelly Woodland is directing for a third year and might as well move into the trailer they use as a set.

But, there are plenty of virgin performers in this year’s production, as well, including actor Steve O’Dea; Assistant Director Lisa Figueroa; actress Liz Pascoe; and Music Director Peter Madpak.

“The Great American Trailer Park Musical” kicks off at 8 p.m. Feb. 6 and runs through March 9, in the Pinkerton theater, 140 Tampa Ave. W., Venice. Tickets are $25 to $28.

THEATER // ‘The Columnist’ Florida Studio Theatre opened David Auburn’s “The Columnist” this past week to a packed and appreciative audience. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony-Award winner’s latest play is a fascinating look at the life of flamboyant and controversial-political columnist Joseph Alsop.

Its main focus is on the halcyon, heady days of “Camelot,” following the election of John F. Kennedy, which marked the apex and the following decline of Alsop’s career.

Alsop is interesting on many levels. Although a devoutly rancorous Republican, rabidly on the McCarthy bandwagon in the ’50s, he revered the New Deal and JFK with equal passion. He is quoted in the play as declaring, “Eisenhower was like going to bed with a glass of milk and a woman in curlers.” The play elucidates Alsop’s astonishing role in American history as a major influence on the domino theory and the escalation of the Vietnam War.

Jeffrey Plunkett is sublime as Alsop, in complete control of the contradictory, extravagant facets of his character, which were numerous. A highly educated, erudite, closet homosexual who delights in playing Washington, D.C. host — down to the frilly napkins, filling his house with art and antiques and mingling with socialites. He also volunteered to fight in the war, referred to President Lyndon Johnson as a “bed-wetting, pinko, sissy boy” and is quoted as saying sarcastically, “How are the poor Negroes doing?”

Sharply directed by Kate Alexander, the production maintains an edge-of-your-seat intensity throughout. Each character is played with his own gemlike flash of truth. The remarkable cast includes John Keabler as Andrei; Rachel Moulton as Susan Mary Alsop; Robert Gomes as Stewart Alsop; Marie Claire Roussel as Abigail; Michael Zlabinger as Halberstam; and Seth Teegarden as Philip.

Brain Prather has created a serviceable scenic design, which creatively scrolls Alsop’s printed words across the backdrop, and Sarah Bertolozzi’s costume design is not only true to each decade, but also lovely to see.

// ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ “Kimberly Akimbo” is a darkly ironic comedy/drama centering on the short life of a 16 year-old suffering from progeria, a rare rapid-aging disease. Backstage at The Players’ production revels in the sarcastic, caustic undertones of the story while fully exploiting its warm and fuzzy, ruefully funny outer layer.

Director Ellie Pattison is in complete command of the eccentric characters under her care and presents the audience with a perfectly paced, thoroughly enjoyable theatrical experience.

Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is probably best known for his 2007 Pulitzer Prizewinning play, “Rabbit Hole,” which became a movie, starring Nicole Kidman. His latest play, “Good People,” is currently the mostproduced play of 2012-13. Most recently, he wrote the screenplay for the soon-to-bereleased Disney feature, “Oz: The Great and Powerful.”

Lindsay-Abaire is an adept observer of human personality traits and he exposes human foibles in an adroit and entertaining manner. The adults in this play are case studies of parental self-centeredness, presented with humor, love and wry understanding.

The well-chosen, and amply talented, cast is led by Jenny Aldrich Walker as Kimberly Levaco. Walker gently reveals a girl/woman who, in the course of the play, comes to wrest a future for herself where there was none.

Kaylene McCaw gets a lot of laughs as Pattie, Kimberly’s hypochondriac, highly pregnant mother. Ross Boeringer fully informs Buddy, her alcoholic, forgetful father.

Jamie Lee Butrum commands the stage as Debra, her homeless and larcenous auntie.

This past weekend, the Sarasota Orchestra’s parade of guest conductors continued with Daniel Hege, current music director of the Wichita Symphony and former music director of the now-defunct Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.

Hege is an extremely competent conductor, and what he lacks in energy and zeal is certainly made up by stick technique and clarity. He could step on the podium of almost any major orchestra, without a rehearsal, and come away with a proficient performance. But, for these ears, energy is the key when musicians take that step beyond proficiency, and, for the most part, Hege didn’t have it.

His program, like his podium work, was exemplary. Starting with Haydn, he led the Sarasota Orchestra through a textbook reading that was stylish, clear and witty. The only mistake he made was in removing the composer’s mischievousness at the end and inserting his own humor.

In his Symphony No. 90, as in much of his music, Haydn shows an elfin waggishness.

In this case, he gives us two false endings.

The conductor, who leads the audience as much as he does the orchestra, can conduct those finales so the audience knows there’s more to come. Hege chose to give the first ending a wild swoop of his baton, leading the listeners to think it was the end, so, of course, they applauded. Then, as if he’d never seen the piece before, he looked at the score and “remembered” it was a false ending. So, he lifted his baton and went to the next ending.

At this point, he actually left the podium as the audience clapped, stopped mid-stride, looked at the concertmaster’s music, put his hand to his head as if to say, “Whoops. I forgot. There’s more,” ascended the podium and proceeded to conduct the real finale. Then, he turned to us and beckoned us to applaud. It was condescending to all. Haydn did it better.

Soloist Philippe Quint joined Hege for a glistening performance of the Barber Violin Concerto, one of the most romantic and beautiful works in the repertoire. Quint, who has one of the most stunning sounds I’ve heard, has a small dynamic range and, when the orchestra reaches a forte, tends to disappear into the orchestral sound, a fault of both the soloist and the conductor, who is responsible for balance. As shimmering as Quint’s sound is, he has some odd physical mannerisms, when

Violin soloist Philippe Quint not playing, that distract from the performance and make him seem almost embarrassed to be before an audience unless he’s making music. Still, nothing could take away from the lush, gorgeousness of Barber’s fiddle concerto, a work that overflows with the melodies that made the composer’s songs a staple in the vocal literature.

Before the second half of the concert began, Hege chose to speak to the audience to explain the process that went behind the making of this seemingly eclectic program. More of a lecture than an insight, his explanation failed to mention the balletic connection between the two pieces to come: Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” (choreographed most notably by Nijinsky and, then, Robbins) and the 1945 revision of “The Firebird Suite,”

by Stravinsky, (originally with choreography by Fokine and, later, Balanchine).

These are two of the most sensuous pieces of music written in the 20th century, the Debussy achingly like an aural painting

by Monet, and the Stravinsky moving into the Matisse era. Hege gave them each noteperfect performances, but they lacked the intensity and tension so necessary in this (and all) music.

Soloists from within the orchestra gave the works the inspiration needed. The first chair winds — flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn — were nothing short of spectacular. They brought the passion and zest that was, for the most part, lacking on the podium.

DANCE // ‘Birthday Offering,’ ‘Between Longing & Yearning’ and ‘Changing Light’ World premieres are always exciting, but no one could have expected the sheer exhilaration experienced at the premiere of Will Tuckett’s “Changing Light,” set to the specifically commissioned music of composer Jeremy Holland-Smith. Director Iain Webb certainly saved the best for last in the program, which featured Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Birthday Offering” and company member Jamie Carter’s “Between Longing & Yearning.”

Holland-Smith’s music was incredibly moving, and Tuckett didn’t miss one note with his choreography, which sent goosebumps up your spine. Simple, yet stunning, costumes by Bill Fenner illustrated the changing light of a sunrise or sunset with yellow, oranges and blues. Warming the entire production was the masterful lighting of Aaron Muhl. It was simply one of the most exquisite productions the Sarasota Ballet has presented this year.

Tuckett’s choreography, which included intricate formations and dynamic group scenes featuring the entire cast dancing on stage together, took your breath away. In the second movement, three principal couples Danielle Brown and Ricardo Graziano, Victoria Hulland and Ricardo Rhodes and Kate Honea and Ricki Bertoni performed a beautiful pas de deux sequence, in which all three couples were on stage dancing the same choreography only a few beats behind each other — like in a musical round — with Emily Dixon and Anais Blake floating in and out of the three pairs with elegant movements.

At one point Brown, Hulland and Honea were skated en pointe in fourth position across the stage, as if on ice, by their partners. The final sequence of the ballet featured all the dancers on stage being partnered in grand jeté leaps in cannon across the stage. It was simply a breathtaking performance.

Kate Honea, Victoria Hulland and Danielle Brown in Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Birthday Offering.” with admiration, as the seven ladies each perform a solo representing each dancer’s style of dancing perfectly.

Sara Sardelli performed the Elaine Fifield solo that mimicked the steps and music that a music box ballerina would perform. Amy Wood’s Svetlana Beriosova solo was slow, with large sweeping movements suited to her tall statuesque and long lines. Honea leapt across the stage and bounded in the air in the Nadia Nerina solo. Sareen Tchekmedyian was flirty and sassy in the Beryl Grey solo. Finally, Hulland and Graziano were elegant in the difficult pas de deux that included multiple one-armed promenades in attitude derriere en pointé.

Jamie Carter’s “Between Longing & Yearning” was an improved-upon version of “Five Duets,” which he originally choreographed to Johann Sebastian Bach in 2011. With the additional cast members and refinements, the piece expertly displayed the dynamic relationships between men and women through five emotionally charged pas de deux.

The entire performance was an achievement for the entire company, firmly resulting in the ever-improving talent of the Sarasota Ballet. Webb certainly should be proud.

Sarasota Opera Festival: Pieces of the production puzzle Planning for the four-production Opera Festival is akin to putting together a jigsaw puzzle backstage. Operas “Turandot,” “King for a Day,” “The Pearl Fishers” and “Of Mice and Men” rotate simultaneously for more than a month.

Sarasota Opera’s director of productions, Chris Van Alstyne, is the brain responsible for putting the

pieces together.

The loud chaos of chords from a full orchestra of practicing musicians filters down the hall into Van Alstyne’s office. A man stops in to ask him about buying batteries; a woman pulls him away to talk about spray painting; Maestro Victor DeRenzi pops his head in. And this is all within 40 minutes. In one

week, Van Alstyne has misplaced two pairs of glasses.

“It’s nuts!” he says about the week before the festival begins.

When people are watching an opera, they don’t realize the work that goes on behind the scenes — they see the product, but they can’t see how it’s made.

“We’re an opera factory,” he says.

So, most of the set building is done at other scenic shops, although, the set for the 2011 production of “Vanessa” was built in this small space.

Numbers and Facts: • During the Opera Festival, there are about 250 employed crew and technical members, artists, orchestra members, chorus ensemble, principals and designers.

 The door into the scene bay is approximately 9.5 feet tall.

Set pieces larger than that dimension must be reconstructed after they get through this door.

 Three set pieces for three shows.

“The Pearl Fishers,” “Of Mice and Men,” and “Turandot” have three different styles and characteristics.

• There are about eight on-stage rehearsals in conjunction with each opera, to practice moving the sets.

• An orchestra of 56 to 78 people must fit backstage in addition to the sets during the opera.

• The set pieces can’t be taller than 8 feet when they are loaded on the tractor-trailer because of

the door width of the trailer. From there, they have to be under 9.5 feet tall to get through the door of the scene bay. They can be built up in the set-shop, adjacent to the scene bay, but have to be assembled in the scene bay if larger than the 11-foot door from the shop into the scene bay.

• Jeff Dean designed the set for

“King for a Day,” and it was built locally at Asolo’s scenic shop.

• Michael Wingfield originally designed the “The Pearl Fishers” set, last used in 2003, but because it was “over-loved” by other opera houses that had rented it throughout the years, it had to be completely rebuilt this year.

• John Conklin designed “Of Mice

 This is the largest set piece. It sits at 21.6 feet tall. This side of the dual-opera piece is a backdrop for “The Pearl Fishers” and was designed by Michael Wingfield. The other side is a backdrop designed by Michael Schweikardt for “Turnadot.”

n August 2011, Murray Homes and ArtisTree’s Joe Mantkowski joined forces to create a home and landscape at a residential property on Bird Key. The homeowners wanted a Bermuda-style home with a tropical feel inside and out.

Mantkowski and his team took the homeowners’ desires to heart while designing the landscape. They installed a wide variety of palm trees, including curved cabbage palms, arenga, or dwarf sugar palm and silver European fan palms. Factoring in the home’s bayfront location, ArtisTree also included salt-tolerant flora, including pitch apples bushes, purple fountain grass and copperleaf.

The pops of color throughout the landscape come from the pink-andpurple bougainvilleas scattered about the property, as well as from bright-pink geraniums, yellow allamandas and firecracker bushes with red-and-orange flowers. There is also a tall, blooming mango tree in the front yard.

ArtisTree also installed Old World cobblestone pavers in the driveway and zoysia grass, a water-efficient grass with few pest problems, throughout the front and backyard. The backyard offers a beautiful view and features an elegant pool overlooking Sarasota Bay.

Junior League of Sarasota hosted an evening that drove attendees to drink, eat and be merry, as a fundraiser for the organization. The women annually host a fundraising food pairing, and nearly 50 Junior League supporters filled the private room of Mattison’s 41 for this year’s craft beer and gourmet-food pairing Jan. 25.

Executive Chef and proprietor Paul Mattison prepared a four-course menu with items exclusive to the pairing, and Curt Uhde, of Craft Brew Alliance, discussed the featured beers from Widmer Brothers brewery.

To properly taste the effect the beer has on the food and vice-versa, taste the beer three times: by itself before the course, with the food and after you consume the food.

Humans taste five different flavors, but smell upward of 10,000 smells and aromas, according to Curt Uhde. Always smell the beer and food.

O’Hara Black Tie Photographer Sarasota Opera’s winter gala took guests back in time and onto an entirely different continent for “An Evening in the Forbidden City” Saturday, Feb. 2, at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. The ballroom was transformed into a Chinese wonderland with silk lanterns, centerpieces

made from bamboo and orchids.

A Chinese pagoda, created especially for the event, framed the stage where the 12-piece 42nd Street Big Band played. More than 265 guests were encouraged to take Chinese fans as a souvenir.

Chaired by Rachael Worthington, along with Vice Chairmen Jonathan Coleman and Richard Farrell, the gala raised more than $50,000. The

theme was inspired by the company’s first production of Giacomo Puccini’s vocally extravagant opera, “Turandot,” which opens Saturday, Feb. 9. Guests were treated to a performance from this season’s production of Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers” — Soprano Asako Tamura sang the role of Léïla, and tenor Heath Huberg sang the role of Nadir.

More than 150 people gathered at a VIP viewing party at Jesse and Katie Biter’s Marina Tower penthouse rooftop to see Nik Wallenda’s SkyWalk Tuesday, Jan. 29. The famous highwire walker ended his daring quest right into the rooftop party. Guests enjoying the beautiful views and excitement included Valerie Pober, Sally Schule, Pedro Reis and Dolly JacobsReis, Graci McGillicuddy, Paul and Nikki Caraguilio, Lauren Walsh, Ray Pilon, Penny Hill, Gil Waters and special guest Jack Hanna.

Wallenda must have worked up quite the appetite — he and his family headed to Pacific Rim, where they noshed on sushi, Pac Pac shrimp, pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, and then ended the food tour at Andrea’s for dinner.
