Strokes of LIFE Artist Jack Nolan doesn’t need a camera to capture a thousand words; he’d rather have a pen and a notebook — or even the back of an envelope or page of a book.

“I always carry a notebook with me,” says Jack Nolan. It takes him one vacation to fill a notebook, or about one year to fill a non-traveling notebook.

As artist Jack Nolan sits on the back of a fountain in St. Michaels, Md., he doesn’t realize the back of his pants are getting wet. He’s focused on drawing the picturesque building in front of him. A roaming golden retriever seeking a little company ambles over to Nolan and places its muzzle on Nolan’s knee. The dog keeps its head there for the 30 minutes it takes Nolan to complete the sketch.

That sketch is one of many that the 80-year-old Longboat Key resident eventually turned into a fullfledged watercolor painting.

“I don’t look at that painting now without thinking of that golden retriever,” he chuckles.

This memory is conjured from just one page of the pocket-sized notebook the artist and watercolor teacher always carries with him.

His home is filled with boxes and cabinets of these notebooks containing treasure troves of sketches for future watercolor recreations.

They are notebooks he has filled as he traveled the world, spent time with his five grandchildren and enjoyed adventures with his wife, Mary. Nolan’s life is measured in sketches.

“I told the kids, ‘Forget the paintings, go for the notebooks!’” Mary Nolan says. But each grandchild has his own painting from Grandpa Jack specific to each of his interests.

Instead of painting from sketches of still-life objects, Nolan paints from drawings done based on real-life scenarios. This French style is known as en plein air; translation “in plain air.”

— a handmade journal with handmade paper. Inside is what Nolan refers to as his “sketches,” but they appear to be mini works of fine art, full of sky and water.

Abgott is the reason Nolan started teaching.

“She dragged me into it, you could say,” he says. He has been teaching for the past eight years and has befriended many of his regular students.

He was teaching regular classes at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, but has switched to hosting monthly workshops on Longboat Key and in Lakewood Ranch and as far north as Art Center Manatee. He encourages his students to find their own style.

He gets distracted from talking about teaching as he flips through a few pages of another notebook; he can’t help but digress. Each page

is a memory of a different colorful setting, for example the Rod and Reel Pier, on Anna Maria Island.

In between the more “finished” sketches, there are simple drawings of people: an ink outline of a woman holding an ice pack on her knee; a man wearing a long coat and glasses waiting for a train; and an airport scene of people waiting for flights.

He refers to his fascination with people-watching, saying there’s nothing better than “free models whom you don’t have to pay to sit still.” Nolan appreciates an hourlong wait in a bustling place because of the sketching opportunities it lends.

Next, he opens a cabinet full of notebooks above his studio counter space in his home. He pulls out another one, telling stories as he flips through it; the contents are a clear indication of his worldly trav-

els — always with his wife at his side and a notebook in his pocket.

The sketches of his travels to places such as Fiji, Venice, Italy, and Belgium, became invaluable when he was approached in spring 2012 by advertising agency Young & Rubicam to do a series of 12 paintings for a campaign for Crystal Cruises.

The agency representatives told him the concept behind the series would be paintings representing a made-up couple’s experience on a cruise. “She keeps a journal, and he paints,” Nolan says of his concept.

It wasn’t a stretch from the couple’s own travels.

The results of the campaign span the pages of glossy magazines such as Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic and Architectural Digest. He pulls down another notebook to show a few of the ads, then goes back to an earlier notebook.

Nolan points to a drawing of a little church in the countryside.

“Mary slept in the car while I drew this,” he says. He talks about another sketch-turned-painting that hangs in the couple’s bedroom. It’s a scene in Venice, Italy, drawn at dinner over a glass of wine.

“While I was drawing it in the book, she was making up stories about all the people,” Nolan says.

Her stories were based on such scenes as the laundry hanging on lines outside: Two sheets signified a couple who slept in separate beds; conservative dresses meant the woman worked at a bank.

“I look at that painting and I can still taste the wine I was drinking,” he says.

Nolan can recall a story or a memory with every sketch in his notebooks.

“They are better recollections than a camera for me,” he says.

With retirement on the horizon, Nolan started attending night classes at Maryland Center of Art. “I’d show up in a tie and suit and sit next to a girl with hoops in her nose,” he says.

In addition to eclectically populated art classes, Nolan took workshops with esteemed watercolor teachers he calls “giants,” such as Tony Couch and Anne Abgott — both gave him the encouragement to keep pursuing watercolor.

“Tony Couch said (while looking at one of my sketch books), ‘My God, you draw like me!’” says Nolan. “No one’s ever said anything better to me in my life.”

He learned mantras for painting such as, “Being exactly right is always wrong,” or “Water is deeper and darker than the sky reflects.” To demonstrate, he opens a notebook a little larger than those with which he usually works, a gift from Abgott

notebooks fit in his Army fieldjacket pocket. He’d sketch scenes and people all over Korea to mail to his sweetheart, Mary, long before they were married.

“Around every corner was a subject — it was really terrific stuff,” Nolan says.

During his time in the Army, he was a cartoonist for service newspapers. But, his career took a much different path following his service.

As a professional engineer, Nolan founded his own construction company, Nolan Scott Inc., a company specializing in large buildings and 400,000-square-foot distribution centers.

During business presentations, Nolan would fill a blank newsprint pad by drawing his clients’ projects on the spot. His method impressed them and could hold attention in a way that Nolan says was different than his colleagues’ approach. He would also constantly doodle during board meetings.

“Mary called them a ‘boredom index,’” he says. “If I came back from a board meeting with minutes covered in drawings, she’d say, ‘Must have been a boring meeting.’”

But Nolan swears he has never been bored.

“If I have a pencil and the back of an envelope, then I’m not bored.”

As the company neared its 25th anniversary two decades ago, Nolan followed through with his plan to retire and sell it to his employees.

“It’s a cliché, but you don’t retire from something, you retire to something,” he says. “When I got close to selling the business, I got a little panicky about what that was going to be.”

It only made sense that then 60-year-old Maryland resident would pursue his passion for art.

When I went to see “Sunset Boulevard” Saturday, Jan. 12, I heard a rumor from cast members of The Players Theatre production. In the book, “On Sunset Boulevard: The Life and Times of Billy Wilder,” by Ed Sikov, there’s a confirmation of this disturbing rumor.

In the script, there’s a scene in which leading lady Norma Desmond buries her pet chimpanzee. According to the book, during a party someone asked Billy Wilder, the writer of the script, what the scene means. Wilder’s explanation referenced bestiality.

On a lighter note, a scene featuring Schwab’s Pharmacy is based on a real-life Sunset Boulevard soda fountain where Hollywood big shots used to hang out, much like in the musical. The musical doesn’t feature F. Scott Fitzgerald suffering a heart attack there though, like he did in real life. The pharmacy was torn down in 1988.

These are some things to think about when you go see “Sunset Boulevard.” It has been extended through Jan. 27; tickets cost $25.

THEATER // ‘The Aliens’ “The Aliens,” by Obie Award-winning 31-yearold writer Annie Baker, is a play that insists on silence. New York Times critic Charles Isherwood invokes Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” as a comparison, for the parallel between the two plays of seemingly random, yet playfully intellectual camaraderie between two individuals which tests the theatrical conven-

tions of story.

Baker has a good ear for the dialogue of her generation, and a good eye for its Lost Boys, floundering Peter Pans whose IQs hold out the promise that their disconnectedness fails to produce. Bring your curiosity to this FSU/Asolo Conservatory production and be prepared to tune into your freshman year in college, a place where two 30-year-olds seem frozen in inner time and a world in which a 17-year-old is about to enter.

Set behind a coffee house in small-town Vermont, the lads lounge uninvited on a picnic table surrounded by garbage bins and dying

plants. The stark realism of the play creates an exceptionally demanding showcase for sheer acting talent, which, on the whole, the student trio delivers admirably.

Benjamin Williamson as K.J., a college dropout from an advanced calculus program, whose implied schizophrenia (think “A Brilliant Mind”) is controlled by meds and cocaine, is fascinating to watch. Williamson’s total commitment to his character results in an endearing, memorable performance. His long-time friend, Jasper, played with intensity by Brian Nemiroff, is a disadvantaged youth, still struggling to relate to women and to find his place in life. Zlatomir

FILM // ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

The highly anticipated and already controversial film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” is the ultimate chick flick. It’s directed by Oscarwinner Kathryn Bigelow and stars Jessica Chastain as the CIA operative responsible for taking down Osama bin Laden. The lady makes big impressions in this powerful film.

The movie opens to a dark screen as we hear desperate voices from the twin towers.

Suddenly, it fast-forwards two years later to an undisclosed CIA “black site,” where a terror suspect is being tortured. Maya (Chastain), a rookie CIA analyst, has just arrived and witnesses the brutality. There’s a look of reluctant approval on her face.

The suspect gives up the name of bin Laden’s courier, and Maya becomes obsessed with finding him. Her ferocious perseverance pays off years later and the link is established. Although, not with 100% certainty.

It’s a hard sell to CIA Director Leon Panetta (gloriously portrayed by James Gandolfini) but in the end he comes around and the rest is history.

Although the outcome is a given, Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) has created an explosive

Set and lighting design is by Chris McVicker; costume design is by Whitley Stevens Floyd; and the music director is Don Bryn.

piece of filmmaking which keeps us on the edge of our seats. The spine-tingling moment when we see the compound in Abbottabad, the audience knows all hell is about to break loose. We’re in on it, but petrified at the same time. A hand-held camera captures the action through green-hued night vision lenses and it’s riveting, as is Jessica Chastain’s performance.

Although she doesn’t portray Maya as an enigma, we know very little about her. It’s unnecessary to share her details because Chastain’s Maya is all about her steely mindset. Up until the closing scene, we see little emotion from Chastain. It’s meticulously controlled and yet secretly seething inside ... a perfect balance.

Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal are taking a lot of political heat for “Zero Dark Thirty.” It’s uncalled for in that the film does not take any political stands. Those are left up to the viewer. Regarding torture, Bigelow wisely cites, “Depiction is not an endorsement.”

In fact, Boal based his script on interviews with military and intelligence officials directly involved in the search for bin Laden.

“Zero Dark Thirty” is a fact-based thriller which depicts the brutality and futility of war.

But it also lends vast insight into the heroic actions and immense patriotism of human beings who are determined to protect our great nation.

Music // Sarasota Orchestra Masterworks III: Anu Tali, conductor Anu Tali, the Estonian conductor who took over the Sarasota Orchestra for its third Masterworks program of the season, also seems to have taken over the hearts and musical minds of this city. And with good reason.

Tali, who conducted a program of works

by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius a couple of seasons ago, brought us a beautifullyshaped concert that carried with it an energy and dynamism that produced sparks in the air. She has forward propulsion in her conducting style that takes the verticality out of the music and allows the musicians to be more cohesive and fluid than I’ve heard them in the past. In fact, she turned this excellent “regional” ensemble into a firstrate band, making us think this small-town orchestra now has a big-city sound.

Shape, intellect and heart are the three words that come to mind.

The shape, or contour, of the program began with the tonal, decidedly programmatic (although the composer claims it has no story) Overture No. 2 by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis. A cinematic landscape-of-awork that reminded me of the background for a high-power spy thriller, this gorgeous (and well-written) piece has a beginning and ending filled with fire, and the middle section is filled with meltingly beautiful ice.

Under Tali, the orchestra played it, not as just another overture, but as the worthy piece it is.

Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto, the Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat (not “C Minor,” as listed in the program … that’s the Symphony, not the Concerto), was given more care and definition in the orchestra than it normally gets but always deserves.

Soloist Joyce Yang, a young powerhouseof-a-pianist, is not only energetic and dynamic, but she and Tali proved that although every note was there, some were more important than others. Even the rests were part of the music, making the over-all concept musical, passionate and stylistically right.

The nine sections Tali put together from two of the three Suites from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” were stunning. From the sarcasm and bite of the opening jousting between the Montagues and the Capulets to the tender, transparent innocence of

Romeo and Juliet’s love scene, every note was thought out but kept within a sculpted, architectural line that always moved forward, propelled by the music and story.

The Death of Tybalt in Prokofiev’s hands is, of course, the turning point of this dramatic work. Games between the young Romeo and Tybalt that are never meant to be fatal, go horribly awry and, suddenly, the music is propelling us into Tybalt’s terrifying death throes, followed by the rending and tearing of garments by the shattered parents. It’s impossible to hear this music without shuddering. And the final death of the two lovers, as depicted by Tali and the Sarasota Orchestra, was positively devastating.

But, it’s the shape of the program we’re talking about, and Tali had a surprise for us at the end. Having led us from the bleak and icy beauty of the Tormis through the brilliant classicism of the Beethoven and the despair and agony of “Romeo and Juliet” and after receiving a thunderous ovation, she gave us redemption by leading the orchestra through one of the most transfiguring performances of “Nimrod,” from Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” you could imagine.

Many of the adjectives I’ve ascribed to Tali have popped up in my past reviews but this conductor gives new meaning to them all.

She also gives new meaning to the search for a new music director. She has obviously won the heart of the Sarasota music community. It will be fascinating to see what happens from here on.

North Carolina-based artist Patrick Dougherty gave a few instructions Friday, Jan. 11, before volunteers started to help create his vision for his latest creation, “Branching Out,”on the front lawn at the future home of Sarasota Museum of Art/ SMOA, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design. The outdoor installation will take shape over the next two weeks, but the structure could last two to three years.

Sarasota artist William Wolk first learned to paint at age 14 from nude figures. He was the youngest student in his adult class, at Miami Day Jr. College, in the 1960s.

In 1979, he saw a photograph of worldfamous dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and decided to paint it. He’s been painting dancers since. His experience has brought him from a one-man show in 1982 at Lincoln Center Gallery in New York City, to a 17-state tour of ballets around the country.

A little over a year ago, he became infatuated with a handmade tutu in the Lemon Avenue-facing window front of The Sarasota Ballet School Studio.

“It was just such a beautiful thing! I must have looked at it for a year,” he says.

After he got around to painting it, Associate Director of Sarasota Ballet’s Mary Anne Servian caught wind and introduced Wolk to Director Iain Webb. In June 2012, Wolk finished his painting two of Sarasota Ballet’s principal dancers, Victoria Hulland and Danielle Brown.

Danis Saturday, Jan. 12. The party celebrated her leadership and service to the Opera House and bid her adieu.

In late August, Danis accepted a position as the general director and CEO of the Florida Grand Opera in Miami and completed her tenure at the Sarasota Opera Sept. 28.

‘Viagara Falls’ rises to the occasion

The Golden Apple is alive and kicking again with “Viagara Falls,” an entertaining geriatric sex comedy fresh from its Off-Broadway run and featuring three wellknown TV performers — Lou Cutell (“Off Their Rockers”), Robert Pine (“CHiPs”), and Teresa Ganzel (“The Tonight Show”) — and directed by Don Crichton (“The Carol Burnett Show”).

Sure to find an enthusiastic audience within our region’s abundant elderly population, the plot centers on widowers Charley (Cutell) and Moe (Pine), who decide to celebrate Charley’s birthday with the help of prostitute Jacqeline Tempest (Ganzel) and some little blue pills. What follows is a barrage of jokes aimed at every malaise of old age, from constipation and memory loss to hemorrhoids and erectile dysfunction. The three talented cast members mine plenty of laughs from the occasionally wanting material — certainly enough to provide a full evening of good-natured fun.

Sydney Litwack’s terrific set has been painstakingly reconstituted from the New York production, and Bob Mackie’s costumes get the job done for the men while highlighting Ms. Ganzel’s generous attributes. Under Mr. Crichton’s steady pace, this titillating sex farce has plenty of moxie — and even a little tug on your heart at the end.

Cutell, who also co-wrote the script with Joao Machado, does a nice job of giving us a spritely and spirited Charley — a lover of life refusing to surrender to the infirmities of old age. Pine’s Moe is an amusingly reluctant curmudgeon who, thanks to Charley’s urging, learns how to let his hair down and overcome his inhibitions.

And Ganzel is an absolute delight, displaying terrific comedic timing and a playfully sexy disposition guaranteed to charm the most unmovable theatergoer.

It’s a new year and there are new restaurants popping up all over Sarasota!

The Blue Rooster, at 1525 Fourth St., has extended the yummy block of eateries along Fourth, between Orange and Lemon, in a gorgeous space of soaring ceilings, concrete floors and a bar in which to slurp mint juleps and sweet tea. Located in what used to be an antique store right next to Darwin’s on Fourth and a hop-skipand-a-jump from Station 400, this boisterous bird specializes in down-home Southern comfort food, from biscuits and fried chicken to crispy waffles (the big Belgian type) and the now ubiquitous mac ’n’ cheese.

The executive chef, who spent more than a half-a-dozen years at Roy’s, is Michael Yoder and he’s got the right touch for collards and grits, catfish and even a sweet-potato pie that’s laced with maple bourbon.

There’s music, too. It’s the kind that goes best with Southern comfort food: blues, bluegrass, country and folk. It’s bound to be a hopping, fun, somewhat eccentric place with noise, excitement and the kind of food and drink you crave after a long day at work. Right now, the restaurant is open seven days a week starting at 5 p.m., but it may start serving lunch some time soon.

Right next door to The Blue Rooster, Darwin’s on Fourth is celebrating its one year anniversary with a humdinger of a party Thursday, Jan. 17, starting at 9 p.m.. Darwin’s, one of our favorites, has been busy racking up praise in the past year. It received the Florida Trend Golden Spoon award, hosted the prestigious James Beard Celebrity Chef Dinner, and Darwin Santa Maria was named Best Peruvian Chef in the United States!

Nicely done, thank you, this boat is rocking with an anniversary party that happens to coincide with the restaurant’s weekly Ladies Night, which features $2 drinks, dance music and a DJ. But to kick the celebration up a notch, Cindy Mejia, Miss Peru Universe 2012, is making an appearance; there’s a fashion show by J-Flo Boutique and Salon; and Darwin’s will donate a portion of the evening’s proceeds to Suncoast Children’s Charities, which is a cause cared about by both Miss Peru and executive chef Darwin Santa Maria.

Down a few blocks from Fourth on U.S. 41 loom the ritzy towers of the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, where Jack Dusty is about to hoist its sails.

Touted as “Sarasota’s modern seafood restaurant, lounge and marketplace,” the restaurant’s official opening is Monday, Jan. 21.

Jeff Thomas, a CIA grad (that’s Culinary Institute of America, not the undercover agency … ), who’s worked for Bobby Flay at Mesa Grille and, most recently, was executive chef at Anna Maria’s Beach Bistro, is at the helm of Jack Dusty.

He’s known as “Gator,” and he says, “I’m excited to be a part of this new concept and look forward to working with the team to produce a fun restaurant … with great food, great drinks and great

ambiance.”

The menu promises to be spectacular, serving American food with “a seafood sensibility.” Picture this: a vast raw bar; local caviar (from Mote Marine); crab and fried green tomatoes; grouper cakes with mango beurre blanc; and a magnificent seafood platter that serves two or four people and features a whole lobster, whole crab, peeland-eat shrimp, oysters and “Jack’s ceviche.”

Patrick Bucko is part of Gator’s team. He’ll be general manager, after having served at local greats from Euphemia Haye and Cork to Beach Bistro and Eat Here. And that brings us to another opening.

Eat Here, a restaurant staple on Anna Maria and, more recently, Sarasota’s Main Street, has opened a new branch in Siesta Key Village, at 240 Avenida Madera. Open seven days a week starting at 5 p.m., Sean Murphy’s newest incarnation offers what’s known as “chef-created” cookery with refreshing twists on old favorites from locally-caught seafood to pizza and tacos.

There’s a “Killer Grilled Cheese” with muenster, Gruyère and caramelized onions, Island Ribs, a Gulf Coast Oyster Fry and to-die-for lobster cargot.

Along with great gourmet-style food, craft beers and wines, Eat Here offers fun, fruit-infused drinks, whipped up by a savvy bartender. Great drinks run in the family because Sean’s son, Ben Murphy, positively has a passion for cocktails.

He says, “My passion for creating cocktails is ultimately based on my passion for drinking them. I’ve always enjoyed having a drink with good company and as soon as I realized the type of beverage could enhance that experience, I became interested in beer, wine and cocktails.

Part of the reason I’ve enjoyed bartending so much is that it gives me the opportunity to offer that same experience to our patrons.”

According to Ben: “Balancing quality ingredients. Adding or subtracting a quarter ounce of freshly-squeezed lemon juice can ruin a good drink or make an average drink excellent. Oh, and a smile on the face of the bartender putting the drink in front of you certainly can’t hurt.”

That’s the Eat Here imbibing philosophy.

Eat Here isn’t the only restaurant on Avenida Madera. In fact, there are so many good bistros lined up on both sides of the avenue, some folks are calling it “Eat Street.”

There are Beach Bites and Solorzano Brothers Pizzeria just across the street from Eat Here, which is next door to the fun breakfast/ lunch place, Sun Garden. And now, (the official opening is Saturday, Jan. 19), there’s a brand new Sub Zero ice cream place at 219 Avenida Madera, in case you want something frosty when you come from the beach, are on your way for a manicure at Iris’ Nails and Skin Care or have a hankering for a second dessert when you waddle out of one of the other restaurants.

We told you about the Sub Zero that recently opened on Sawyer and Clark. Now, this clever chain specializing in flash-before-your-eyes ice creams, soft serve, yogurt and frozen custard with just about any mix-in combo you can dream up, has opened a branch on Siesta where it’s always time for something icy and smooth.

Each of these fun-filled franchises has a different owner, and Jill Sheeler-Shenk and her husband, Doug Shenk, run the new branch on Siesta’s Eat Street.

Sub Zero is an experience and this one may be accompanied by music because Jill’s parents, Don Sheeler and Lorraine Murphy, are well-known singers in the area. Maybe they’ll add a musical infusion to their vast array of icecream flavors.

As the home of the Sarasota School of Architecture, our town has a special appeal for those who love the mid-century modern look, with its clean lines, slidingglass doors and minimal décor. Iconic and influential examples of the style can be found all over Sarasota, and tourists and architectural historians come to visit, just to drive past the custom-designed beauties by Paul Rudolph, Tim Seibert, Carl Abbott and others.

But for most Sarasotans of the 1950s and ’60s, a modern house was one of the hundreds of “atomic ranches” that still dot the older parts of town. This was modern architecture for the middle class. Designed and built by contractors rather than architects, these homes were a hipper alternative to the concrete block ranch. Today many are being renovated, but few with as much attention to detail as this 1961 beauty located on a tree-lined street just a short bike ride from Siesta Key. Constructed by local builder Robert Dye, it has all the classic elements of the style — a strong horizontal façade with a slightly vaulted roofline, clerestory windows and a simple floor plan (two bedrooms, two

baths). But there’s a surprise — covering much of the front of the house are whimsical grills with a pattern of circles.

The circles are actually thinly sliced sections of iron piping that have been carefully soldered together. This was probably the idea of the original owner, who was in the plumbing business. It’s a simple design element but an inspired one. It sets the house apart from its many cousins around town.

Current owners Dane Spencer and his wife, Gail Hustedde, bought the house in 2009, when they moved to Sarasota from a three-story Victorian row house in Savannah, Ga. Both are hands-on artists — he’s a landscape architect and she’s a ceramic artist — and good design is an essential part of their lives. Together with local architect Greg Hall, they set out to turn a shabby relic into one of the most stylish remodels in town.

“It was a nice, clean simple house with a lot of the original features,” explains Hall.

“It hadn’t been muddied up.” But its location under a hammock of giant oaks, while picturesque, made it dark inside. To bring in light and space the trio turned a musty

and antiquated lanai on the eastern side of the house into additional living space, and created an outdoor living area that blends seamlessly with the indoors — similar floor and ceiling, plus a zen-like garden and pool. “It’s not quite a lap pool,” Dane says. The visual interest it provides from the living area is just as important as its recreational use. “You don’t have to be in it to enjoy it.”

As a landscape architect, Spencer wanted his home to be as much about the outdoors as the indoors. The garden space, which wraps around the perimeter of the house, is not large but provides enough

Some are of wood and one — the backing for the pool area — is made of Ocala-like concrete block, punctuated with pierced, yet, similar blocks which Spencer discovered at Sarasota Architectural Salvage.

designed to help minimize traffic noise from nearby Siesta Drive.

The basic footprint of the home was left unchanged, though the bedrooms were re-sized to enlarge the master. The original closets were eliminated and replaced by glass-fronted storage units from IKEA which line one wall of each bedroom.

The bathrooms were both renovated with limestone subway tile in shades of brown and grey. And the kitchen was given a state-of-the art update by Lube Kitchens, complete with Italian porcelain counters rimmed in polished steel.

Whenever possible, Hall tried to come up with a design solution that would be appropriate for the home’s age and look.

Everyone agreed the popcorn ceilings had to go, but rather than replace them with plaster, they now sport cypress paneling in a golden-coffee color. They echo the paneling still found in many local homes of the period.

A new home office set adjacent to the living room is enabling Spencer to shift the location of his business. He has been operating out of a storefront on Orange Avenue, across from the Woman’s Ex-

change. With its clever 10-foot-high grid of bromeliads set facing the street, it has been delighting passersby for the past several years. After specializing in parks and public projects, Spencer is now shifting to residential landscaping. “I love working with people who are excited about their gardens,” he says. “ Likewise, Hustedde, has her own space in the new home for her ceramics. “I had to have a studio,” she explains. Luckily there was a sort of bonus room behind the garage — no one is sure what it was originally used for — that fits the bill perfectly.

It’s large and filled with light, complete with its own bath. In addition, there’s in a newly-constructed kiln out in the garden where Gail fires her work.

Spencer and Hustedde call their new home the Garden House. It will be open for a tour sponsored by the Sarasota Architectural Foundation from 1 to 3 p.m.

SRQ couple conquers big-screen dream It takes ‘reel’ love to execute a full-feature film with full-time jobs, three children and a $3,000 budget. sons’ budget. For example, blockbuster “Les Miserables” had a $61 million budget. The Wilsons say they couldn’t have completed this film with that small of a budget in any place other than Sarasota.

“We didn’t pay for a single location,” Karl Wilson explains. Each of the 15-to-20 locations where they shot was receptive to helping with the project.

“A (Parker’s Books) employee ran an extension chord out the door so we could continue working after they closed,” says Karl Wilson.

And, as a first-time producer, Rhonda Wilson is appreciative of the Sarasota County Film Commission, whose staff acted as liaisons for shooting locations and gave guidance along the way.

“They were very patient with me, to say the least,” Rhonda Wilson says.

When they asked the commission about the possibility of shooting at an airport, the commission delivered.

“They bent over backward and said, ‘Hey, we have someone who can hook up a pilot for you with a private jet,’” Karl Wilson says.

“Actual working actors were willing to work on it for free to see it come to fruition,” Rhonda Wilson says. There were 17 local actors and three local crew members. An additional 30 cast members came from around Florida.

“It’s pretty amazing to think of pulling this all together and

Another difficult aspect for the Wilsons was balancing daily life with the creation of their dream project.

In 2008, Lakewood Ranch resident Karl Wilson was traveling to New York City to work on a film project. He had two duffle bags — in one bag was a camera and in the other were a few essentials and the rest of the filming equipment he needed to get through the weekend.

When it came time to find a name for the independent-film production company in 2008, he and his wife, Rhonda, decided Two Duffle Bags seemed the most appropriate reminder of how much they can do with little.

On Jan. 12, the Wilsons hosted a screening of their 82-minute, independent film, “Breaking Up With Rosie,” at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas. There had previously been two short films under the production company — one in 2008 called “Groceries.” The second short they made in two days in 2011 for Movieville Film Festival inspired the couple to pursue a full-length feature created in Sarasota.

In a nutshell, “Breaking Up with Rosie” is a comedy with romantic undertones about a romance writer going through a divorce. Karl Wilson wrote and directed, and Rhonda Wilson produced it using local actors and local filming locations. The film was completed in one year with a budget of $3,000 from their own pockets. The filming was accomplished in 11 days.

A lot of people don’t realize how important the film, “A Beautiful Mind,” was. When it came out, I was flabbergasted, absolutely flabbergasted. That movie was as clear and as well done as anybody could ever do it. It was a terrible, terrible thing going on and people didn’t have a clue of how terrible this illness could be.

An unabashed and perpetually enthusiastic advocate and a brilliant partygiver, Lee Peterson, with Bob Peterson always at her side, raised more than $5 million in 16 years. They also sponsored an annual symposium presenting leading-edge research that attracted as many as 1,500 people.

Sunshine from Darkness has just announced a merger with IMRHO (International Mental Health Research Organization), a similar entity founded in California by the Staglin family, friends and allies of the Petersons, in the fight against brain disorders. The details are to be announced at an event March 14. Consistent with Lee Peterson’s policy of always giving her supporters an exceptional experience, it will be the first party held in the newlyrenovated Cà d‘Zan Room and Terrace, at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota.

Here Lee Peterson shares her recollections, including her experiences with some of the celebrities who came to Sarasota to accept the “Luminary Award” she created to honor their willingness to discuss their own illnesses.

Luminary Award winner. It was 2003 – 10 years ago, isn’t that amazing? I had never met him before. He was an absolutely delightful gentleman; he wanted to ask me questions about what my husband and I had been doing and, of course, we had many, many things to tell him. He was funny, charming, intelligent and very, very bright. I used to tease him and make him talk even more; we did make each other laugh.

He was so funny … he sat here in

the other room and people were asking him questions. There was a ballgame going on or something like that and he was saying, “Listen, I have to hear this ballgame so I really can’t listen to everything you have to say.”

Any time Bob wanted to call Emily Walsh, he really

thought he was disturbing her.

But she would just say, “Please, call any time.” She never forgot that Bob and I were doing something that was terribly important to us and to her and her family.

People really had no idea what Barbara Cook was

like. They just saw this big, heavy lady and they didn’t really think anything of her at all. But I knew, because I had heard her many, many times. And I told people, “You’ve got to come to this concert because she is sensational.

She will just have you in the palm of her hand.” Between the singing and the personality and the things she said about how important it was to her to be doing what she was doing … anybody who was listening loved it.

She was a wonderful, charming, lovely lady that anyone would care about.

When Patty Duke got up to talk, you thought she was going to be very serious and make people uncomfortable. She knew

she had had all these problems.

But she was really hysterically funny … as sweet and dear as she could be.

Dorothy Hamill was utterly charming and good-looking, but a little bit shy. She didn’t think she was such a big deal, but everybody else thought she was absolutely wonderful. And when

Bob always wanted to do that.

So the merger with IMRHO is definitely a natural … it’s a very good organization and they have raised millions and millions of dollars.

Bob and I were just so delighted that we could be involved with something like this that was very, very personal.

He was as open to doing that as you could possibly be. You know Bob … everybody loved him. He was just a great guy; if he could do anything to help anybody, he always did it.

I just thought that whatever I was doing was important to whatever project I was working on. The symposium was always a very big production. But people were just so interested and anybody that came was thrilled and delighted because they hadn’t heard about a lot of the work that was being done.
