Property near Publix takes shape The town of Longboat Key is keeping an eye on four acres of property that could be used as a future town center.

The Longboat Key Publix is attracting more than just grocery shoppers.

In the coming months, it could attract two new restaurants, some new businesses and, possibly, a future town center.

In the months leading up to the store’s Dec. 13 opening, rumors circulated about what’s in store for the parcels surrounding the new

grocery store.

Up first, the last piece of the former Avenue of the Flowers Plaza will be torn down — but not until after season.

Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets Inc., which bought the Avenue of the Flowers II plaza from Howard Rooks and used a portion of it to house its construction operations, won’t tear it down

until April, after the Easter rush. In its place will come more parking spaces and landscaping.

Rooks still owns the former Mattison’s Steakhouse building at the Plaza, which Publix was not interested in buying.

Rooks, though, said he has interest from a Sarasota restaurateur who would like to lease the space for a new restaurant on the Key.

“Ultimately, I hope to get a restaurant back up and running in the space in the next three months or so,” Rooks said. “I also plan to make improvements to the building, redo the landscaping and renovate the parking lot.”

Snowbird Bev Prechtel didn’t expect to see a “Lady from Longboat Key” while vacationing at a timeshare resort just outside of Mesa, Ariz.

But that’s just what she discovered in the resort’s share-a-book library.

She hadn’t heard of Edith Barr Dunn, but she found a signed copy of her memoir, “Lady From Longboat Key,” that was published in 1986, and enjoyed reading Barr Dunn’s life story.

The copy was signed and addressed “to Louise.”

Dunn told the Longboat Observer that she visits Arizona every year for her birthday, although she didn’t get to make the trip last year because she was ill. She isn’t sure who the “Louise” is for whom she signed the book.

The town manager’s office is growing.

Town Manager Dave Bullock has promoted Town Engineer Anne Ross to the newly appointed role of assistant town manager.

In December, Bullock told the Longboat Observer that he had pinpointed Ross as a possible town manager successor. And for months, Ross has been seen at Longboat Key

Town Commission meetings taking notes and acting as a special consultant to a variety of topics — everything from cellular communications to pensions.

The promotion became official Tuesday, Jan. 1, when the new assistant town manager job description was formed.

Ross’ annual salary rose from $88,587 to $97,000, and she is on a

probationary period through April 30. Ross, 40, has been a town employee for six years.

vive again in that space.

Wolfer said he’s held preliminary discussions with Rooks about purchasing the property, which he believes is better suited to package with his approximately three acres of vacant property for use as a future town center.

Publix paid Wolfer $1.1 million two years ago for one acre of property along the right side of the new grocery store that it uses for parking.

“The remaining three acres of land is available for sale, and my belief is it would be a significant improvement if the land were made into a town center,” Wolfer said.

Apparently, the town agrees with Wolfer’s assessment.

Town Manager Dave Bullock confirmed he has held preliminary discussions with Wolfer about acquiring the land.

Wolfer said the town offered $700,000 for the property, which was valued at $1.2 million after the town paid for two appraisals, six months ago.

But Bullock said no official offer for the property was ever made.

“I’m keeping an eye on that property and have also met with Mr. Rooks about his property,” Bullock said. “The town has not made any formal offers but will maintain a dialogue with both property owners.”

Wolfer is hopeful the property will be sold to the town but said he’s not willing to “give the property away.”

“I’m a town resident, and I can see this land being utilized with benches, a park and a place to walk with a cup of coffee,” Wolfer said. “It could only help enhance an area that’s the center of our community.”

Meanwhile, some current and new businesses are making their way into the retail plaza that Publix built to the left of its new grocery store.

Rumors are circulating about whether the former Longboat Liquors will enter the space closest to Publix or if Publix hopes

Ross, who will work 70% of the time in the town manager’s office, will continue working 30% of the time as the town engineer.

Ross told the Longboat Observer she’s excited about her new promotion, but declined an interview Tuesday before press time, because the Longboat Key Town Commission was still being notified about the new position.

Bullock said Friday he made it a goal during his first year to find an assistant town manager, whom he likes to refer to as his future successor.

“Part of every manager’s job is to strengthen and prepare for the time when they are not there,” Bullock said. “As I looked around the organization, I saw we have a lot of highly capable people, but I wasn’t sure any were on track to manage an organization either here or somewhere else.”

Bullock said he considered looking outside his organization until he met with Ross. Bullock said Public Works Director Juan Florensa shared his sentiments about her potential as an assistant town manager.

“Anne fit the bill,” Bullock said. “She’s smart, energetic, has the right set of values and has a certain hunger to learn new things.”

Publix spokesperson Shannon Patten said she couldn’t comment on future tenants or upcoming changes to the new Shoppes of Bay Isles at this time.

Nails of Longboat Key opened last weekend next to the former liquor store space, and White Sands Dry Cleaner opened this week next door to the nail salon.

Premier Sotheby’s International Realty will acquire 866 square feet of space next to the dry cleaner, according to the leasing website.

Your Fitness Instructor and Longboat Key Dental also have openings planned soon.

What’s left in the plaza is a 1,299-squarefoot spot in the middle and a 2,578-squarefoot spot at the end of the plaza, where Publix wants to put a restaurant.

Petar Sibinkic, owner of Your Fitness Instructor, received the certificate of occupancy for his new 2,598-square-foot gym last week and has a construction crew working on the gym now.

“We’re really excited to be a part of this new plaza,” Sibinkic said. “I’m happy with the mix of tenants we already have and hope a future restaurant will sit right next door to me sometime soon.”

Assistant Town Manager Function “Under the direction of the town manager, this is a highly responsible position in performing professional work at an administrative level in planning, developing and directing major programs and projects for the town manager. As assigned, collaborates with department heads engaged in a wide range of tasks necessary for the successful operation of the town government.”

Bullock said any good town manager is always scanning for talent and ways to improve the organization. He said no one else was considered for the role.

“Anne kept coming up in that internal and external scan,” Bullock said. “Part of my responsibility is to help form the next group of managers within the organization and this is part of that process.”

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said he supported Bullock’s decision several months ago when he was made aware of the possibility of Ross’ promotion.

“I told the town manager months ago I have mentored Anne to take over the Public Works Department,” Florensa said.

“She could run that department today if I asked her to.”

Although Ross will still be working on some utility projects with Florensa, her responsibilities, and most likely her desk, will eventually shift to Town Hall. Florensa will likely receive approval to search for a new engineer to oversee his seven utility employees.

Florensa said he believes an assistant town manager requires the attributes of tact, diplomacy and an ability to see everyone’s side without jumping to conclusions.

“I believe Anne possesses all of those qualities,” Florensa said. “The Public Works Department is excited and very supportive of her.”

Colony Association monitoring litigation Town wants The association has submitted a $50,000 cash bond to the town of Longboat to revive Key as it works through settlement negotiations for three acres of property. the Hilton’s application The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association is no closer to reaching an agreement to resolve ongoing litigation than it was four months ago, according to a quarterly report submitted to the town Jan. 2.

However, the first quarterly report, sent by Association attorney Jeffrey Warren, reveals that Association officials are holding discussions with all Colony affected parties to resolve litigation issues, in an attempt to gain control of approximately three acres that sit in the middle of the 15-acre Colony property controlled by the unit owners.

The quarterly report, which is mandated as part of a resolution passed by the Longboat Key Town Commission last year when it gave the Association a one-year extension to rebuild the property with its current number of units, explains unit owners have “actively pursued a fair and rea-

sonable resolution of all of the controversies with the various parties.”

The report states that “there is no pending agreement,” and the Association said it cannot divulge details of any settlement negotiations.

The Association does reveal, however, it’s working with longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber’s controlling entities to pursue a challenge to Colony Lender LLC’s claims against the Colony Partnership (agreement between the hotel and the unit owners) in the Chapter 7 bankruptcy case. Colony Lender, whose principals include Longboat Key residents Randy Langley and David Siegal, acquired certain Klauber loans. It’s believed a successful challenge to those claims in bankruptcy court could help speed up settlement negotiations.

suing a foreclosure of Klauber-controlled properties in Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court, in which it has an 80% undivided interest. The Association is closely watching that foreclosure case, which could go to trial later this month, because it could also speed up a settlement. Currently, the foreclosure doesn’t allow Klauber to deliver clear titles to any properties as part of a proposed settlement because of the foreclosure proceedings.

The letter states Association officials have also met with Andy Adams, the owner of several Colony units, who also owns a 5% undivided interest in Colony outparcels through Breakpointe LLC. Development partner discussions are also ongoing, according to the letter.

“The Association can report that it is currently working with several prospective de-

velopment partners who have expressed significant interest in the redevelopment of The Colony,” the letter states. “The Association has encouraged these potential development partners to seek and propose resolutions for all of the disputes and controversies as part of their proposals to the Association.”

The Association also delivered a $50,000 cash bond to the town last week as part of its agreement with the town.

The bond guarantees a list of conditions set forth that includes securing unsafe buildings and sprucing up the outward appearance of the property while litigation matters linger.

Library checks out commission candidates Candidates for the Longboat Key Town Commission turned a new page Monday when they met with Longboat Library members for the first candidate forum of this year’s election.

Candidates for the Longboat Key Town Commission probably didn’t have to read between the lines when they were invited to speak to Longboat Library members and volunteers Monday, Jan. 7.

Library members have approached the commission over the past two years to explore funding options, such as including a line item in the town’s budget for the nonprofit or allowing the library, which leases its land and building from the town, to piggyback off the town’s insurance.

So, it was expected that library members and volunteers would want to know whether commissioners would consider opening the town’s checkbook in the future for the organization.

Mayor Jim Brown told those in attendance that the town’s line items have typically been reserved for organizations that belong to the town. Instead, he said that library services are an area in which the town could seek some of its tax dollars that go to Sarasota County each year.

“It would be worth pursuing whether you would gain funds through the county by dropping the annual fee,” Brown said.

Library board members have explored funding options through Sarasota County and have been told by officials that state aid for the library is conditioned on library services being free.

For now, however, membership fees remain the major source of income for the library, which is run by volunteers.

Brown’s challenger, Larry Grossman, said that the library should join the county’s library system.

Irwin Pastor is challenging Commissioner Terry Gans, who was not present at the forum. Pastor suggested that a non-profit foundation could help the library continue to provide its services.

Commissioner Phill Younger — whom the audience chided for his admission that he sometimes folds the pages of books — emphasized ways that the town and commission have worked to help the library. For example, Town Manager Dave Bullock, who was previously the deputy administrator of Sarasota County, worked with Sarasota County Commissioner Joe Barbetta to help secure a one-time $20,000 grant that the library received last year from the county.

Gene Jaleski, who is challenging Younger, said that the town and library should have entered into a public-private partnership a long time ago and expressed support for a line item, citing Longboat Key’s wealth and the town’s reserves.

But Younger argued that the town’s reserves have been depleted in recent years. Reserves are set aside for emergencies, he said, and aren’t a “bottomless pit.”

Brown echoed a similar sentiment: “We don’t have any money,” he said, telling the audience that town employees haven’t had raises in five years and that citizens have told commissioners that they don’t want their taxes increased.

Commissioners, candidates and library members discussed other ways of working together to benefit the library, such as an expanded presence on the town’s website and promoting the library by including a sheet in utility bills.

The forum was the first candidate forum of this year’s election.

Commission candidates will meet again this Friday, when they speak to the Republican Club of Longboat Key.

A consultant has been hired to see if it’s possible to distribute additional tourism units to the Longboat Key Hilton.

Town Manager Dave Bullock is doing whatever it takes to get the Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort project back on track.

Ocean Properties Ltd. submitted preapplication documents to the town’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department in November for a redevelopment of the 102-rooms at the existing Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort and the addition of 85 more rooms that would be built in a new guest tower.

But the project and any other applications submitted to Town Hall are on hold after a Sarasota Clerk of the Circuit Court judge issued a judgment in November that went against the town and essentially froze pending and future redevelopment applications.

The judge favored the Islandside Property Owners Coalition, which challenged the town’s code changes that gave commissioners more flexibility when approving projects.

More importantly, until changes are made to the town’s codes and Comprehensive Plan, the town can’t use an outline development process to distribute a pool of 250 tourism units already approved for future distribution by Key voters.

At its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 7, the Longboat Key Town Commission approved a $23,000 budget request by Bullock for the use of Spikowski Planning Associates to provide consulting services for short-term changes to the town code. The commission also approved a $100,000 budget transfer for the use of a future planning consultant to come up with a process and strategy to make long-term code changes.

When questioned why two consultants were needed, Bullock explained that Spikowski Planning Associates is charged with coming up with a way for the town to make changes more swiftly to allow the Hilton project to be reviewed while the longer code and Comp Plan changes are made over a 12-to-24-month period.

“Right now the town can’t process applications and we are frozen in our ability to respond to applications,” Bullock said. “This work is geared toward an intelligent look at the code and trying to craft amendments to allow these types of applications (the Hilton project) to be reviewed and processed while we undergo the long-term planning effort.”

Bullock said he expects a draft from Spikowski Planning Associates in the coming weeks that might shed light on how the town can get the Hilton project back on track and not halt future redevelopment applications in the wake of the judge’s order.

“We are all aware there are applications out there or those that might be coming,” Bullock said. “We are looking to review the current code, modify it and allow some applications to be reviewed by the commission sooner rather than later.”

At the commission’s Tuesday, Jan. 22 regular workshop, commissioners will also hear a report from Bullock about two consultants being considered to head up the long-range code change process.

+ Town chooses its people over sea turtles The Longboat Key Town Commission will pick Longboaters over sea turtles when push comes to shove. The commissioners expressed the need to voice for the safety of Longboaters over sea turtles at its Jan. 7 regular meeting.

Commissioners approved on first reading an ordinance that allows for a budget transfer of $25,000 to do a study along Gulf of Mexico Drive to determine which lights need modifications in order to stay on during sea-turtle nesting season.

Several commissioners, though, made it clear they want town staff to analyze how much light is needed to keep pedestrians safe.

“If I have to choose between lighting for turtles and residents, I choose humans every time,” said Vice Mayor David Brenner, who made a point to note a pedestrian was killed last year walking across Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The rest of the commission agreed.

“Human safety comes before the turtles,” said Commissioner Lynn Larson.

+ FDOT announces New Pass Bridge work The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced New Pass Bridge work that is planned in 2013.

FDOT reports that crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Jan. 11, to perform routine maintenance on the bridge.

The same type of work will also be performed on the Ringling Bridge this week in Sarasota.

Also this week, crews will replace worn traffic markings on Gulf of Mexico Drive between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

None of the work is expected to cause traffic delays.

Facial recognition Linda Chambers was deciding on hot dog buns on the opening day of the new Longboat Key Publix when she noticed a woman looking at her.

The woman obviously wanted to ask Chambers a question.

Finally, the woman, Jody Vitt, piped up: “Can I ask you a question?” she asked.

“Did you ever lose a camera?”

“Yes,” Chambers answered.

Vitt had other questions: How long ago did you lose it? What color was it? Did it have vacation pictures?

Chambers’ answers: Almost a year ago.

Red. Yes. In a flash, Vitt knew she’d found the woman she had started looking for nearly nine months earlier.

“I found your camera!” Vitt exclaimed. …

Vitt has found all kinds of things during her three- to five-mile daily jogs over the years.

Credit cards. Money. A man’s watch. Dozens and dozens of golf balls. She has turned them in to nearby condominium guards or to the BP gas station nearby. Last spring, she

noticed the camera lying on the ground as she ran past Tangerine Bay Club. When she turned on the camera, she found at least 600 pictures.

There were pictures from China and Italy, a cruise, a wedding and school plays.

“There were some beautiful pictures,” Vitt said. “I knew they were special.”

But Chambers didn’t even know that her Sony Cybershot camera was missing. She figured she had misplaced it and would find

A chance sighting at Publix led to the return of a camera and a newfound friendship for two Longboat ladies.

it in a drawer. She took pictures with her cell phone for the next nine months and hoped that the camera would suddenly materialize.

Vitt asked friends, neighbors, gas station clerks and condominium guards if they knew the identity of the woman with the short blond hair in most of the photos. She took out an ad for two weeks in the newspaper.

She blew up one photo until she could see a real-estate sign, which listed a Toronto-based contractor as the builder. She deduced that the owner was probably Canadian and called the phone number she found for the contractor, hoping someone might know the owner.

No luck there. Finally, she left the camera with her friend, Euphemia Haye owner D’Arcy Arpke, in hopes that she might recognize a customer as the owner of the camera.

Vitt figured she would recognize the owner anywhere. She was right.

While talking to a Publix clerk, she picked Chambers out of the crowd that flooded the store aisles on opening day.

When Vitt later delivered the camera, Chambers insisted that Vitt come in for a glass of wine. Vitt was right to assume the pictures were special.

The trip to Italy was a 65th birthday celebration of Chambers’ husband, Terry.

The couple made the trip to China with 13 neighbors from Canada, where they live half the year. The school plays featured Chambers’ grandchildren.

Chambers was at first stumped when she contemplated how she lost the camera. She walks in the area most days but never brings her camera. Then her husband reminded her of the night they had dinner on St. Armands Circle and took a golf-cart cab that dropped them off just over the Longboat side of the New Pass Bridge.

Chambers tripped as she and her husband walked back to their Country Club Shores home. Apparently, she dropped the camera, as well.

For both women, the camera’s return had a photo-worthy finish. They learned that they live one block from each other and have mutual friends and acquaintances. Now, they share a budding friendship as well.

Referendum for extension could bring BID full Circle

Winter Fest presents the 2013

St. Armands landowners could soon vote on a 10-year extension for the Business Improvement District.

Sunday, January 13, 2013 10 am to 4 pm

If an upcoming vote is successful, the St. Armands Business Improvement District will get another go-around.

The BID, a district that assesses a special tax on approximately 80 properties, expires Sept. 30, 2013.

The city has finalized the registration list for an upcoming referenda vote and will now begin notifying each owner about the upcoming vote, which could begin in February and end in April.

The Sarasota City Commission voted unanimously to endorse the BID’s renewal last April. The endorsement included clarifications about the district, including a specification that the three-member board should consist of one landowner merchant and two landowner investors.

The commission voted 5-0 to approve a referendum vote for the district in December.

The BID was established in 2001 and assesses a special tax of 2 mills. One mill is equal to $1 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The City Auditor and Clerk’s Office assesses the total value of property in the district at $103,758,950.

Marty Rappaport, BID chair and leading organizer, told the Longboat Observer that he is “hopeful” about the extension.

“The BID has accomplished an awful lot in 10 years, and there are an awful lot of good projects we still hope to accomplish,” he said.

Landowners are required to petition the city for an extension of the BID. The clerk’s office has received petitions from 20% of landowners for a vote, as required for the referendum to move forward.

Landowners elected against extending the BID in 2009, amidst tensions between merchants, who sought representation on the BID, and landowners, who worried that if merchants were the majority, they would elect to use BID monies for special events, rather than capital improvements.

Since its inception, the BID has funded various upgrades and projects on St. Armands, including new street lighting, new and repaired sidewalks and median renovations, and has also partnered with the city on other projects.

If extended, the BID’s goals for the next decade include gathering funds for a parking garage on the Circle, creation of public bathrooms, burying power lines, landscape enhancements and creating Circle entrance signs for motorists.

Rats took over Town Hall talk

This week in history: Discussion about installing additional crosswalks on Gulf of Mexico Drive is a well-trudged path.

But Jan. 6, 2005, the Longboat Observer reported that an unknown prankster took to the steering wheel on the issue.

On New Year’s Day 2005, Gulfshore residents were surprised to wake up and find a white-line crosswalk painted across Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“I thought that it was nasty,” one Gulfshore resident said at the time. “No one here would do it. We take too much pride in living on the Key.” Public Works Director Juan Florensa spotted the crosswalk while driving to work Jan. 3 and immediately notified the Florida Department of Transportation, which controls Gulf of Mexico Drive, because he knew it couldn’t be official.

That afternoon, FDOT had a crew at the scene to paint over the prank.

Several years earlier, Gulfshore residents had approached the Longboat Key Town Commission about the possibility of a crosswalk.

The request was denied.

Oh, rats!

Last month, Longboat Key Town Hall had at least four of them.

And although we didn’t find past rodent occurrences that were documented in Longboat Observer archives, the issue of rats on the island has come up at Town Hall in the past.

The town had a longstanding practice of giving away free rat poison; that was discontinued in 1992.

But at the commission’s JANUARY first meeting of January 1993 1993, commissioners discussed the possibility of re-establishing a townwide rodent-control program, citing a number of residents who complained about rodents in their homes.

The late Mayor Jim Brown (not to be confused with the current Mayor Jim Brown) told the commission that his pesticide man told him that rats often scatter when trees are cut down as the result of development.

Town Manager Al Cox told the commission that the town’s last major rat infestation occurred about a decade prior and volunteered advice to homeowners: Make sure roof vents are properly screened.

But Commissioner Woody Wolverton offered a cheaper practical solution: a cat.

The commission discussed the issue at a workshop the next month and heard a report from a town staffer who recommended that rodent control be the responsibility of the individual homeowner.

“According to public-health professionals, you have a better chance of being bitten by a rabid raccoon than you have in any way of being infected by these outside rats,” the town staffer told commissioners.

That conclusion probably wouldn’t surprise some Longboaters today. The issue of raccoons, particularly in the Emerald Harbor neighborhood, has come up in town meetings and emails during recent years.

The 1993 town staff report concluded that residents should use traps, rather than poison, for rats, because dogs or children could accidentally ingest poison.

At the February 1993 workshop, Commissioner Bob Farber expressed support for Wolverton’s feline fix-it.

“I think if I were running for commission, my motto would be: a car in every garage, a chicken in every pot and a cat in every house,” he quipped. …

Buchanan’s biggest test It would not be fun standing in Congressman Vern Buchanan’s shoes. At least not for us.

He represents Florida’s 16th congressional district, a compilation of five mostly Republican counties whose constituents make up the largest concentration of Social Security, Medicare and veterans benefits recipients of any mid-size metro area in America.

In other words, a lot of his constituents are on the taxpayer dole for portions of their incomes. And more than 33% of these constituents, as retirees, are living on their savings and dividends.

On top of that, even though Buchanan’s district is primarily a Republican stronghold, a sizable portion of those Republicans, as we have learned, are “center Republicans,” moderates who readily accept an activist government in everyone’s lives.

With such a constituency, Buchanan, after six years in office, has figured out that his longevity in Congress is tied to moderation. He can’t be associated with, say, a Ron Paul or a Louie Gohmert of Texas. They’re too far right (although for our taste they’ve been among the few who really have had the courage to do what is right in Congress).

So it really was no surprise when Buchanan voted to accept House Resolution 8, the fiscal cliff bill, that raised tax rates on 1% of Americans and didn’t cut one cent from federal spending. In fact, it codified increasing federal spending.

It was a politically safe vote: Raise taxes only on 1% of Americans; make permanent the Bush income-tax cuts for everyone earning less than $400,000 to $450,000 a year. Only a few get hurt; nothing happens to entitlements. The only constituents Buchanan irked with his vote are the diehards who wanted Congress actually to reduce its spending.

Nonetheless, we had to ask the congressman: Why that vote? Why not take a stand against Congress and Obama as usual?

“Either way, you couldn’t win,” Buchanan told us. “I didn’t like it. It was either that bill or go over the cliff. Let us all drown or save 98% or 99%. I voted to save the 98%.

“It was the least of two evils,” he said. “I thought going over the cliff was a worse option. I called a lot of people, and about 80% of the people said this was the way to go.”

As Buchanan sees the situation, the fiscal cliff vote wasn’t the Rubicon. He called it “the small battle in the war.”

“The debt ceiling is the war,” he said.

And when that is confronted in another 60 days, Buchanan’s true beliefs and courage will be tested as these have never been tested before.

So far, in our records, with all due respect, Buchanan has capitulated on two important fiscal tests. He voted in 2008 in favor of “TARP,” the first economic stimulus bill that bailed out badly managed banks at taxpayer expense; and he took the politi-

Those who are grandparents and great-grandparents know the pain for the nation must come now or on the backs of our children and grandchildren.

We created this mess. We should pay the price.

To our readers: Give Buchanan the courage to win the war. Urge him to stand firm on the debt ceiling.

Asked what he thinks Republican House members will do on the next debt-ceiling vote, he told us: “My sense is we’re going to have to find a way to deal with the deficits.

If there is not a substantial move in the right direction, it’s going to be nuclear.”

Asked whether he would side with shutting down the federal government, or hold firm on not raising the debt ceiling if Obama and the Democrats don’t agree to substantive cuts in federal spending, Buchanan was smart and crafty enough not to make any commitments just yet.

“I don’t think it’s going to be business as usual,” he said.

That would be a shock to the world.

In our lifetimes, none of us has ever seen Washington actually reduce its spending below what it spent in a previous year. But everyone in Congress knows that is what must occur.

Congressman Buchanan, since his first election in 2006, has filed legislation calling for a federal balanced-budget amendment.

He introduced another bill recently saying Congress will not receive a pay raise until it balances the budget.

Let’s hope, for our grandchildren’s sake, he has the courage to call President Obama and the Senate’s bluff on the debt ceiling.

Either Obama and the Senate cut federal spending in a serious, meaningful way, or the Republican House will not raise the nation’s borrowing limit, sending the federal government into default on its debt and

Longboat Key and the local arts scene lost a treasure last week — Jim Herrington.

Herrington lived in Emerald Harbor for the past 20 years with another Longboat Key treasure, Carol Camiener. He died last Thursday at age 84.

In Detroit, probably everyone born before 1980 knew Herrington. He was a TVnews icon as the longtime political reporter and talk-show anchor for WXYZ-TV. Ted Simon, another Detroiter and Longboater, recalled after Herrington’s memorial service Sunday at Temple Beth Israel that when he went to a restaurant with Herrington in Detroit, it was almost useless to think he’d get to talk to Herrington. Fans practically mobbed the popular TV newsman.

On Longboat, Herrington didn’t live as a celebrity. Unlike a lot of bombastic broadcasters, Herrington was modest.

He liked to garden at his Herrington home. You would have no idea who he was or what he did unless you asked.

But once you triggered him on the word “politics,” oh my, you could sit for hours listening to Herrington tell rich, colorful stories about American politics, American history and the politicians. He interviewed all of the presidents from Truman through Clinton, and when he spoke about them, he talked about them, not himself, and did it from his “he-was-there” vantage point.

To ride in a car one-on-one with Herrington was to take a graduate course in American history and political science — far, far more interesting than any book could ever be.

Herrington left TV journalism in the early 1990s when he saw TV news devolve into fluffy, mindless entertainment. He couldn’t take it.

In his adopted home on Longboat Key, he still made a difference, but in a quieter way. Herrington was a devoted supporter of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts and the arts in general.

One of the best stories Herrington ever told was what he said to his colleagues at his send-off party: “Don’t worry about what the competition is doing. If you lead, they’ll follow!”

They just don’t make newsman like Jim Herrington anymore. Indeed, they don’t.

A year after Lakewood Ranch resident Ina Gross was murdered in her home, authorities have still not made an arrest in the case.

Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube, however, said he is confident Gross’ murderer will be brought to justice.

Although much of the forensic evidence is in, detectives still are tracking down and sorting through bank records, computer and telephone evidence and other information.

“We are still waiting on information that we’re trying to gather, not only on the person of interest, but on other people involved in the investigation. We’re not there yet.”

Steube said he wishes the case had been closed before the one-year anniversary of Gross’ death, but detectives are working hard to build a case that cannot be disputed in court.

“People have to realize, in a lot of cases, we believe we know who committed the crime,” Steube said, noting the sheriff’s office coordinates with the state attorney’s office to ensure a case solid before charges are brought forward and trigger time constraints for having a “speedy trial.” “We don’t want to make an arrest and present a case to the state attorney’s office that’s not good. (It needs to) have everything needed for successful prosecution. If that takes us time to do, then that’s what we’re going to do.”

+ Commission moves forward Laurel Park buffer Residents from Laurel Park are divided over a controversial buffer zone that would change the development process for projects planned within 100 feet of the downtown neighborhood.

After hearing from both sides, commissioners on Monday unanimously moved forward a draft of the buffer zone to the city’s Planning Board. The Planning Board will vote on the buffer-zone proposal as a zoning text amendment.

Some neighbors say the changes would contradict the city’s long-planned Downtown Master Plan.

Entrepreneur Jesse Biter paid $4 million for two buildings fronting 200 feet of prime mid-Main Street just before 2012 ended.

Biter plans to meet with city planners to talk about the possibilities for constructing a project in the long-term future. For time being, he wants to keep the two buildings’ current tenants in place.

Biter is also looking at other properties downtown and in the Rosemary District.

“We are looking at a few (parcels) that fit my vision for what Sarasota should be,” Biter said.

Siesta Key Association board member Bob Waechter Jan. 6, announced his resignation from the Sarasota County Tourist Development Council and the Sarasota County Board of Zoning Appeals.

In December, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, charged Waechter with a felony for alleged fraudulent campaign contributions under the name of County Commission candidate hopeful Lourdes Ramirez.

Waechter resigned from the Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority shortly after being elected chairman, but remains on the SKA board of directors.

ers stationed on the grass berm between the sidewalk and the street, I soon asked where people went to go the bathroom, because there were no facilities nearby. I was told that a trailer hauling several portapotties would come by in a half-anhour. Because such bathrooms were theoretically not permitted for more than 30 minutes at a time at that location, Publix insisted that police send the trailer away every time the limit was reached. This is indicative Publix’s needlessly spiteful and obdurate attitude.

I have visited Immokalee and seen first-hand the impoverished conditions migrant workers there confront. I, and others, have joined with CIW because we believe strongly in the justice of its cause. CIW protests are always orderly. There is never unruly behavior, threatening words or profanity. Rather, a positive and uplifting spirit of shared struggle characterizes it.

In my view, as long as Publix won’t even deign to sit down with CIW, its position on the penny-per-pound issue lacks justifiable merit.

Dec. 26 Broken glass 7:44 a.m. — 500 block of Yawl Lane.

Property Damage. A man who cleans pools arrived at a property and noticed the sliding-glass door was shattered. The cleaner called the homeowner, who called police.

The home did not appear to have been burglarized, and police could not find an object that could have shattered the glass.

Drunk and drunker 6:23 p.m.— 6700 block of GMD. Traffic.

A 20-year-old woman failed field sobriety tests and tried to pretend like nothing was in her back seat when police asked her to retrieve a bottle of vodka from her car. Her 20-year-old passenger was lying passed out across the back seat and had thrown up on the driver’s side floorboard. The passenger told a firefighter/paramedic who was called to the scene that she had consumed 20 drinks that afternoon. Police arrested both women for underage alcohol possession and allowed the driver’s mother to take them home.

The smoking gun 8:08 p.m. — 700 block of Tarawitt Drive.

Fireworks. Police received four calls about explosions going off and rattling home windows. Officers found bits and pieces of fireworks debris that smelled like gunpowder in a driveway. Police had spoken to the homeowner earlier, but the man then refused to speak with police. Police gave him another warning and told him a report would be filed identifying him as being involved with previous incidents.

The man, who was vacationing from Las Vegas, said that he signed an affidavit when he purchased the fireworks locally but didn’t read it. Police told him they are illegal to use for recreational purposes.

11:14 p.m. — 600 block of Bay Isles Parkway. Disturbance. A gate guard refused to let a man enter a property to drop off a car for a homeowner because the owner’s voice message wasn’t specific enough. Police contacted the resident, who explained the situation to the guard, who allowed the man to deliver the car.

Terry Petesch once showed up for a party thinking it was “Meatloaf Monday.” When he realized it was a surprise party thrown in his honor, he swore he had a prior commitment.

He stayed just long enough to blow out his candles, then left, according to friend Beaner Chandler.

The other party guests had a wonderful time celebrating, even though the guest of honor wasn’t technically there.

On Sunday, Jan. 6, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, filled up for a celebration titled “A Tribute to Terry: Celebrating the Life and Friendship of Terry Petesch.”

The celebration of life for Petesch, who owned Terry’s Framing Gallery & Art Supplies in the Centre Shops, was similar to the “Meatloaf Monday”-turned-surprise party in at least one respect: The man who brought the group together wasn’t there.

But pictures of and stories about Petesch, 62, who died Nov. 27, filled the room as the community paid tribute to him.

Many who spoke drank Petesch’s beverage of choice — Miller High Life — in his honor.

Petesch’s friend, Kip O’Neill, described him as someone who had not only mastered the art of framing, but also the art of friendship. He attended the weddings of every friend, whether the event took place in Italy or the Moose Lodge.

After they became friends, he began storing a six-pack of Miller High Life in O’Neill’s refrigerator, along with a glass that had a giant “T.” He would only drink from it after checking to ensure it was perfectly clean, according to O’Neill.

Several spoke about Petesch’s relationship with his cherished godsons: twins Clay and Cole Sidner and David Radtke, who also spoke.

“Terry was my place to hide, my sanctuary,” Radtke said. “Really, he was my place to see where to channel and go in life. He was my best friend.”

At the end of the tribute, O’Neill invited the crowd to “Get up and be merry. In fact, let’s just be Terry.”

Then, the crowd filed out to enjoy food and drinks as they shared their many memories of Petesch.

+ Callihan: Movin’ on up Kudos are in order for Longboat Key resident Margaret Callihan, who was recently promoted to chairwoman, president and CEO of the South Florida Division of SunTrust Bank, based in Fort Lauderdale.

She is the first woman to hold this position with SunTrust.

For the past seven years, Callihan Callihan has overseen the bank’s Sarasota-based Southwest Florida regional chairman, which includes five counties, spanning from Bradenton to Naples. In addition, she’s known locally for her involvement with Community Foundation of Sarasota County, USF Sarasota-Manatee and the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County.

Callihan started her new job Monday, Jan. 7, and is commuting on weekends to her home in Bay Isles for the time being. At the end of the school year, she and her husband, Matt, a math instructor at Sarasota Military Academy, intend to move to Fort Lauderdale.

Detroit Broadcaster Herrington recorded storied career Famed Detroit WXYZ-TV journalist Jim Herrington died Jan. 3. He was 84.

James “Jim” Herrington interviewed scores of politicians, including six U.S. presidents — every commander in chief from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.

Democrats called him a Republican, and Republicans called him a Democrat.

Viewers called him tough, knowledgeable and honest.

“He was an instinctive commentator on politics without showing his leanings,” said Warren Coville, a Bird Key resident and former co-owner of the Detroit Pistons, whose friendship with Herrington spanned more than 30 years. “He was very, very fair. He would call a spade, a spade.”

Herrington, of Longboat Key and formerly of Farmington Hills, Mich., died Jan. 3. He was 84.

His career in broadcasting spanned more than four decades, including 30-plus years with Detroit’s ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV. “Jim was one of the greats — the unquestioned dean of political reporters in Detroit, really all of Michigan, for many years,” wrote Molly Schechter, a former Detroit resident and longtime Herrington friend, in an email.

Born July 15, 1928, in Pennsylvania, he got his start in broadcasting with the U.S. Navy’s Armed Forces Radio. He went on to attend Northwestern University on a GI Bill and worked at two Saginaw, Mich., stations, before beginning his legendary career with WXYZ. Herrington won acclaim for his coverage of Detroit’s 1967 riots. In one infamous exchange, recounted in Tim Kiska’s “A Newscast for the Masses: The History of Detroit Television News,” Herrington stuck his microphone in the face of a looter who was stealing dresses through a broken window.

“Do you think there’s anything wrong with what you’re doing here?” Herrington asked.

“No, it’s going to burn anyways,” the woman said. “And I could use a new dress.”

Herrington was best known as a political reporter, although his story subjects ran the gamut.

In one segment called “Herrington Is,” Herrington tried out different occupations each week. He flew with the Blue Angels and appeared in a rodeo for the feature.

His favorite job, however, according to Herrington’s daughter, Lauren Guzzardo, was collecting trash, because it was an “honest day’s work.”

More than 30 years ago, Herrington was the celebrity guest for the Channel 56 Auction, a fundraiser for public television.

He had a reputation for wandering around, so a volunteer promised to “step on the chord” so that he wouldn’t go too far.

That volunteer became his life partner, Carol Camiener — whom Herrington always said was his favorite person he met on the job.

Herrington won four Michigan Emmys and a National Headliner Award.

In retirement, Herrington became the dean of Michigan political reporters. But Herrington’s interests stretched beyond politics.

He was active in Sarasota’s Media Roundtable, according to president and moderator Irwin Starr, who said that Herrington attended a forum as recently as October.

He was an avid gardener who even played music to his orchards.

He was a board member at Temple Beth Israel and was actively involved with the Ringling College of Art and Design and Asolo Repertory Theatre. Some of his passions reflected the fact that he was an intensely visual person — a characteristic that friends say was apparent in Herrington’s attention to detail in shooting a story.

Herrington told friends recently what he never would have disclosed when he was a journalist.

“Most people didn’t know his political leaning,” Coville said. “But he did tell me that he voted for Obama.”

Herrington “was very distraught” over the direction of news and politics, according to Coville, particularly the amount of money being spent by politicians to get across their messages.

Friends still looked to Herrington for his political commentary long after he left television.

He was part of the “Slow Readers Book Club,” a group of 13 men from the Longboat Key area who meet up when they spend summers in Michigan. Recently, the group read Robert A. Caro’s “The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson”

and enjoyed Herrington’s intimate knowledge of the Johnson years.

Longboat Key resident and fellow “slow reader” Bill Sandy, who got to know Herrington when he was still a broadcaster, recounted an incident Herrington shared with him in recent weeks dating back to a funeral Johnson attended for a highranking Michigan official when he was still president.

The Secret Service was concerned because Johnson insisted on leaving the presidential vehicle in front of the church, which posed security concerns. As Johnson exited the service, the press surrounded him.

“I know what you’re trying to do,” Herrington said to a Secret Service official.

“You’re using our bodies as a shield.”

“He had the ability to ask very good questions, but he was also very likeable, and people trusted him,” Sandy said.

The trait that viewers saw for decades on their screens was still apparent when the Slow Readers Book Club met.

“Jim,” Sandy said “would tell really good stories.”

Herrington is survived by his longtime partner, Carol Camiener; daughter, Lauren Guzzardo; sons, Doug and Jim; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service took place Sunday at Temple Beth Israel, and a memorial service will take place in Michigan later in January.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Herrington’s name to the Ringling College of Art & Design, the William Fyfe Fund at Northwestern University, Racquet Up Detroit or the Nature Conservancy.

Nora White’s mission brought joy and laughter to many children

Fred Taich, 86, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 3.

Mr. Taich is remembered for his tireless and dedicated volunteer work as an officer at Temple Beth Israel, Mote Marine Aquarium, the Coast Guard Auxillary, Meals on Wheels and the Jewish Family and Children’s Service. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, as well as the Longboat Key Rotary.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rena Bellos.

He is survived by Alice, his wife of 64 years; daughters, Sharon Woods and Sue Goldsand; sons, Arthur and Tim; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 6, at Temple Beth Israel. Memorial donations may be made to Mote Marine Aquarium, Temple Beth Israel or the Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Sarasota.

Nora White, 62, traveled the world as a volunteer for the Medical Missions Foundation of Kansas City, where she became known as ‘Doctor Clown.’

Clowning around was a serious mission for Nora White.

In 12 years, she went on 15 medical missions to work as a pre- and post-op medical assistant and in patient relations with the Medical Missions Foundation of Kansas City, Kan. She traveled to Vietnam, Cuba, Romania and the Philippines for her volunteer work.

White became best known as “Doctor Clown” for her comedicentertainment routine for young patients along with her puppet sidekick, Chucky.

White, 62, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 3, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, one week after a heart attack. She was the wife of Islandside Property Owners Coalition President Bob White.

Born March 10, 1950, in Bamberg, Germany, she grew up in Eltman, Germany, before moving in 1969 to the United States.

She moved in 1974 to Kansas

City, and became an underwriter for Aetna Life Insurance Co. White met her husband, Bob, at a ski club meeting in Kansas City, where she caught his eye during a Bavarian dance routine.

They married after an 11-year courtship.

White got involved with the Medical Missions Foundation through her friends, founders Dr. Tony Racela, and his wife, Luz. White was honored in 2004 as “Humanitarian of the Year” by the foundation and was also named an honorary citizen of the town of Tagbilaran in the Philippines by its mayor, who hosted a tribute in White’s honor.

She and her husband, Bob, were scheduled to make one more mission trip there in February.

White was also a former volunteer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

She loved cooking and attended culinary schools in France and Italy, and was known for her beautiful floral arrangements — particularly of orchids — and her spectacular home décor at Christmastime.

White was also a fitness buff who woke up early each morning to exercise an hour on the treadmill and also worked out twice a week in the gym. She loved social gatherings, especially costume parties, where she was known for her creativity.

White is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Freddy and Jason; daughter, Nichole; stepson, Martin; two sisters; three brothers; and five grandchildren.

Private services will be held on Longboat Key and in Kansas City.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Medical Missions Foundation, 8363 Melrose Drive, Lenexa, Kan., 66214.

Robert J. Weeks

Robert J. Weeks, 78, of Longboat Key and Sea Girt, N.J., died Dec. 23.

A New York native, Mr. Weeks graduated from Manhattan College and attended Dartmouth

College’s Tuck School of Business Leadership Training Program. He had a successful 35-year career at Dun & Bradstreet, where he was vice president of operations.

Mr. Weeks was also a Korean War veteran.

Mr. Weeks loved wintering on Longboat Key, where he was active in the Spanish Main Yacht Club community and an avid golfer. In Sea Girt, he regularly volunteered for AARP Foundation Tax Aide and the Sea Girt Community Appeal. He also served in various capacities at St. Mark’s R.C. Church.

Mr. Weeks is preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Moore.

He is survived by Patricia, his wife of 56 years; seven children: Christopher Weeks, Lori Gouldson, Mary Beth Snyder, Michael Weeks, Thomas Weeks, Nancy Harman and Jamie Weeks; brothers Richard, Donald and David; sisters, Muriel Alex and Patricia Porvasnik; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, Jan. 5, at St Mark’s R.C. Church, in Sea Girt.

Memorial donations in Mr. Weeks’ memory may be made to the St. Mark’s Social Concerns and the Sea Girt Community Appeal.

Bird Key receives historical designation 99 years after the erection of the key’s first mansion, which was demolished in 1959.

“Today is the culmination of a tremendous effort of county commissioners, historians and residents,” Russ Gutmann, chairman of the Sarasota County Historical Commission, told the roughly three-dozen people who braved a chilly morning Saturday, Jan. 5, to witness the unveiling of Bird Key’s historical marker at its entrance on John Ringling Boulevard.

The application, review and installation process to get a historical marker takes years to complete, Gutmann explained.

The fact that Bird Key residents possessed the tenacity to get a marker came as no surprise to Sarasota Mayor Suzanne Atwell, who moved to the Key 14 years ago and spoke at the ceremony.

“I quickly learned how seriously the community cares about the beauty of Bird Key,” she said. “Now we have that commitment enshrined for all the walkers, joggers and bikers to see when they cross the bridge.”

Originally, Bird Key was 12.8 acres of rock, which caught the eye of Davidella “Davie” Lindsay Worcester while she was boating with friends. Worcester purchased the land in 1906 and drew up plans for a Georgian-style mansion, New Edzell Castle, named for her ancestral home in Scotland. Worcester died in 1912, two years shy of the home’s completion, but her relatives, followed by John Ringling’s, occupied New Edzell Castle until its demolition in 1959.

During the latter half of the 20th century, Bird Key grew exponentially.

In 1951, Ringling’s nephew, John Ringling North, purchased 280 submerged acres from the state to expand Bird Key. Eights year later, the Arvida Corporation purchased the property (and then some), dredging and filling the submerged land to enlarge the island to its present size of approximately 300 acres. Today, Bird Key has 511 residential lots.

The new historical marker tells the history of the New Edzell Castle, which was Bird Key’s first mansion. The home was torn down in 1959.

From a rocky dream to a luxurious haven “Bird Key began as a dream, when a young woman spied beauty in the 13 acres of rock while boating. It is here today because of the nexus of her dream and the ambition of a development company,” said Eileen Normile, president of the Bird Key Improvement Association.

Here’s an overview of the island’s history.

1905: Davie Worcester spots a rocky island while boating.

1906: Worcester purchases the 12.8 acre-island.

1914: New Edzell Castle, Bird Key’s first mansion, is completed.

1922: Business associates John Ringling and Owen Burns purchase Bird Key from Worcester’s heirs.

1925: Ringling constructs a bridge and causeway to connect Bird Key and the outer keys of St. Armands, Lido and Longboat to the mainland.

1934: Ida Ringling North, Ringling’s only sister, moves in to New Edzell Castle.

1936: Following Ringling’s death, Ida Ringling North and her son, John Ringling North, become administrators of the Ringling estate, which includes Bird Key. 1951: John Ringling North forms the Bird Key Corporation and acquires 280 submerged acres from the state to expand the island.

1959: The Arvida Corporation purchases 2,000 acres of Ringling property, which includes Bird Key. With the intent of creating “a luxurious island residential haven,” the company dredges and fills the submerged property and starts construction of the island’s infrastructure.

1960: In place of New Edzell Castle, torn down in 1959, Arvida builds the Bird Key Yacht Club.

1964: Bird Key is connected to the city water system.

1967: Arvida transfers the Bird Key Yacht Club to the island’s residents.

2013: Bird Key receives a historical marker, located at its entrance on John Ringling Boulevard.

When Betsie Coolidge opened Café L’Europe in 1973 with her late husband, Titus Letschert, she never envisioned it would become an icon, beloved 40 years later by residents and tourists alike.

“Back then, I was so young, I couldn’t even imagine what 40 years looked like,” says Coolidge.

Now that the restaurant has reached that milestone, she has many images in mind — “way too numerous to count,” she says. A short list includes rehearsal dinners, birthday and anniversary dinners, fundraisers and holiday galas. “They were all so special and done with panache,” Coolidge says, adding that she always felt “blown away” after ringing in a new year surrounded by friends — her customers and employees — at Café L’Europe. “It was like we were in New York City, not the sleepy Sarasota of that era (the 1970s).”

Café L’Europe’s official anniversary is Monday, Jan. 21, but the celebration lasts all month, including special menu items and new branded merchandise. Coolidge replaced the restaurant’s italicized logo with the original script font, which she and Letschert had discussed before his death in 2011. When she mentioned the idea on Facebook, more than 300 fans weighed in, voting 5-1 in favor of it. The staff unveiled the new “old” sign to the public Thursday, Jan. 3, immediately preceding an anniversary luncheon. Among the attendees were Ken and Susan Peifer, who were delighted the event fell on Ken’s birthday, which called for a special meal. The couple recently moved to Longboat Key from San Francisco and declared they “would become regulars.”

In addition to Coolidge, two employees have been a part of Café L’Europe from day one: Marshall Gillen and Judy Longmate, both members of the wait staff. When asked how she achieved that longevity, Longmate said the years fly “when you work in a really good house like this serving great people.” Many of her closest friends are the restaurant’s patrons, she said.

Former wealth manager tries his hand at new business A Ponzi scheme wiped out a once-prominent wealth manager’s career. The comeback is going slow. ‘This is still us digging our way out,’ says Chuck Vollmer. to 110 years in prison.

Vollmer and his Longboat Key Stanford associates, who managed $600 million in assets, were never criminally charged in the case. Vollmer, however, did withdraw an application to work with another brokerage firm in a 2009 agreement with the Florida Office of Financial Regulation. That agreement, in which Vollmer didn’t admit or deny allegations, stems from roughly $80 million in certificates of deposit the local Stanford office sold that authorities say were tied to Stanford’s scheme.

Vollmer, a Stanford Group colleague and his stepson, Matt Drews, maintain they not only didn’t know about Stanford’s fraud, but they were victims, too. They decline to say how much of their own money they lost in the scheme, only to say it was significant.

After a six-month, self-imposed business timeout, Vollmer re-entered the work world in 2010.

“I had to get out and do something,” he says, “rather than sit around and wallow in pity.”

Vollmer met with franchise consultants and business brokers. He considered several other options before Esio, including an IT firm, a business-consulting gig and even a disaster-recovery business. He chose Esio because he liked its recurring revenue strategy and he clicked with the firm’s founder, Frank Leonesio, a 40-year franchise and small-business veteran.

1993 and worked briefly at Oppenheimer & Co. after Stanford, joined Vollmer at Esio. Their Esio franchise unit had 1,100 clients and 10 employees through December. It’s hovered between breaking even, says Drews, and operating at a slight loss.

“This is still us digging our way out,” says Vollmer, who started working in money management in the region with an E.F. Hutton office in 1984. “This is a major

transition.”

Yet, Vollmer tries to remain optimistic, even in the face of future challenges and the past that haunts him. No matter where the business goes, adds Vollmer, he says he’s content that he’s in control.

“There have been times of difficulty here, and there have been times of joy,” says Vollmer. “But with all the headaches, there is a freedom here I enjoy.”

By most accounts, Chuck Vollmer should be in the pleasant twilight of a 40-year career in financial planning and money management.

Instead, Vollmer, 65, has just about started over.

Now, instead of his business consisting of stocks and bonds, it’s filled with beverage systems and water filtration. He runs the Sarasota franchise unit of Esio Beverage System, a Mesa, Ariz.,-based company that offers what it calls the first hot-andcold, ready-to-drink beverage dispenser on the market. The Esio machine, essentially a water cooler with a twist, can make cold strawberry-lemonade one minute and hot coffee the next. It does that through a proprietary system and a series of pouches that can be inserted into the machine.

The franchise is one of two in the country; the other is in Connecticut. “I wanted something with magnitude and something I can embrace like a family business,” says Vollmer. “I wasn’t looking for a haircut place.”

Vollmer, though, also sought to confront what he considers his career’s darkest and most painful nightmare: being at the helm of the Longboat Key branch of Stanford Financial Group in early 2009. That’s when the Houston-based firm’s founder, R. Allen Stanford, was charged with bilking the company and hundreds of clients in a $7 billion Ponzi scheme. Stanford and several other one-time Stanford Group executives were convicted of federal fraud charges in 2012. Stanford was sentenced

Four-bedroom Lido Key home sells for $4 million The following residential real-estate transactions took place between Dec. 10 and Dec. 28.

A home on Lido Key tops all transactions in this week’s real estate. Billy and Vivian Baird, of Sturgis, Ky., sold their home at 1355 Westway Drive to Donn Winokur and Eileen O’Donnell-Winokur, of Sarasota, for $4 million. Built in 2003, it has four bedrooms, five baths, three halfbaths, a pool and 6,193 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $1,866,700 in 2003.

The Winokurs also sold their home at 521 Harbor Cay Drive to Dale and Lynn McBrier, of Fairview, Pa., for $1.45 million. Built in 1986, it has three bedrooms, five baths, a pool and 4,518 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $765,000 in 1991.

The biggest news here isn’t the class schedule but that fact that access to the building is being dramatically improved by the installation of a new handicap ramp at the back of the building and a new front staircase. Work has begun and should be completed soon. The town works to maintain the facility, but there can be little argument that a replacement is overdue … way overdue. Perhaps this will be the season that the community finds an acceptable route to that objective.

Gail Condrick is back with Nia on Saturday morning but not until Jan. 19. My Pilates class remains accessible to all levels. If you have never taken Pilates before, however, please come on a Tuesday — and be prepared to be teased as a “Pilates Virgin.” Many students have taken their first Pilates class at the Rec Center and we are happy to have you — but only on a Tuesday.

Once again, this year, the just-started winter term at the Education Center offers yoga five mornings a week. There is a new option for Nia lovers; Gail Condrick is trying out a 5 p.m. “Happy Hour” time slot Mondays. If you’d like to know more about Nia, check out her website: gaelavisions.

The Nuts and Bolts. Advanced registration is required for Education Center classes and workshops. The winter term started last week and runs through Feb. 28. Fitness classes are typically $88 for members and $104 for the term but they may be taken individually. Single-session workshops range from $30 to $50 for members; $35 to $60 for non-members. Memberships start at $50 for individuals; $75 for couples.
