The PDRA Paint & Accessories Show Kicks Off May 8 in Las Vegas 20

The Industry’s Main Event

The PDRA Paint and Accessories Show at the National Hardware Show® has everything you need in one place, May 8-10 in Las Vegas.

Welcome to the Show

A President and His Portrait

Official portraits of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama debuted recently at the National Portrait Gallery. The paintings made history. They are the first presidential portraits painted by African-American artists to be featured in the gallery. Kehinde Wiley painted President Obama and Amy Sherald painted Mrs. Obama.

The Right Match

Perfect customer service, a wide selection and a welcoming store won’t mean much if the colors come out wrong. To help you avoid any color mishaps, Paint & Decorating Retailer explored the available options in paint-matching technology. Make sure your operation is known as the spot where customers get the right match, every time.

A Day at Adelaide’s

After too much “steering wheel time” as a hardware distributor sales representative, Walter Rafolski decided to settle down in St. Simons Island, Georgia, and start a new career as an independent paint retailer. With two decades under his belt, Rofolski has made Adelaide’s Paint & Decorating a staple in his community. Read his story and share in Adelaide’s success.

Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams Announce Exclusive Partnership

Lowe’s Home Improvement stores will now be the exclusive nationwide retailer of Minwax®, Cabot® and Thompson’s® Water Seal®, Purdy® paintbrushes and Krylon® spray paint as the result of its expanded partnership with Sherwin-Williams.

Lowe’s and the Valspar Corp. have worked together since 1971, according to the home improvement retailer, but growth between the two companies has developed over the past decade. The paint company launched its brand in Lowe’s stores in 2007, and the Sherwin-Williams’ HGTV Home® line

hit Lowe’s shelves in 2015. Sherwin-Williams’ acquisition of Valspar was approved in May after several months waiting for approval from the Federal Trade Commission.

According to Lowe’s, the retailer launched Krylon products in its stores nationwide in the first quarter, and other coatings products will follow throughout the rest of 2018.

The future of these product lines in independent stores is currently unknown, but Paint & Decorating Retailer will follow the news and update retailers as more information becomes available.

Get all the benefits of finish quality, control, and affordability in a brand new option with firm filaments! Wooster Gold Edge paintbrushes are made with an exclusive formula of white and gold CT™ polyester. They are smooth and fine to virtually eliminate brushmarks, yet they have added stiffness to efficiently push paint on the surface and provide control for sharp, single-pass cuts. With 22 brushes included in the launch, you can have your favorite size and style right from the beginning.

Reinvent Your Marketing Plan With These Tips

For many small businesses, marketing is a necessary evil. It’s a valuable part of a successful operation, but it’s often difficult to remain consistent and to measure return on investments.

A recent Forbes article outlined ways small businesses can make an impact without breaking the bank.

Wrap your vehicle.

What if you could promote your business without needing to open your mouth?

A vehicle wrap is the answer. Consider offering magnets with your company name or logo to regular customers or local contractors, too.

Join forces.

Whether it’s a contractor or the bakery down the block, there are other businesses that are eager to connect. Host an Ask the Expert in-store event featuring a contractor and invite the bakery to bring their goods for refreshments.

Make headlines.

If you’re having a sale, launching a new product or sponsoring a local youth sports team, tell your local news. Getting your company name in the circuit will keep you top of mind and reinforce your business as the place to find experts.

Always Getting Better

Wall Repair Product Promises ‘Better Finish’

Anyone who has attempted to fix a hole in drywall knows the struggle to restore the wall to pristine conditions. You arm yourself with putty knives and lots of spackle, and yet the repair job is just as obvious as the hole itself.

To help fix this process, Hyde Tools has released a new drywall repair product designed to not only encapsulate the entire repair process in one product, it also promises to make the repair without leaving telltale signs. Better Finish ™ Nail Hole Filler is composed of 3 ounces of drywall joint compound and a built-in putty knife to accomplish the entire task in one session.

The choice to use joint compound instead of spackle is to lessen the marks left behind, says Corey Talbot, vice president of marketing and product development for Hyde Tools.

“Joint compound is both easier to spread and sand, and it also promotes a better finish than spackle,” Talbot says. “If you read product reviews online, you’ll see continual complaints about patching material drying out before ever being used—or drying so quickly after opening that it’s barely usable.”

Better Finish Nail Hole Filler comes in a patented container that keeps the compound fresh for three years, even if the product has been opened. The compound is also optimized for easier spreading with the putty knife, and it will not shrink like other fillers. It is also easier to sand, Talbot says, and will not “gum up” the sanding material or harden beyond the sander’s capability.

All-Around Value

Find Just What You Need at the National Hardware

Show®

As a business owner, it’s critical to stay connected to your industry. An easy way to do that is to regularly attend industry events such as the National Hardware Show®. Not only is it a unique gathering of the industry’s best and most innovative products, it presents a place to meet and greet channel members that can’t be beat.

Built-In Benefits

I have been attending the National Hardware Show since the 1980s, and I have continued attending through the growth and sale of three successful companies. The show is one of the few venues where I can meet distributors face-to-face and interact directly with manufacturers. In my case, not only have I found many items to add to my inventory at each event, I also met several overseas manufacturers that became major suppliers.

Personal Connections

The show also presents incredible networking opportunities. From hobnobbing at the various social mixers to meeting other retailers while walking down the aisles, attendees can form relationships that will make a positive impact on your business. They can pay off in unexpected ways as well. It was a chance encounter at the National Hardware Show that led to the sale of one of my businesses. Had I chosen to not attend that year, I would have missed out on a career-changing opportunity.

Cutting-Edge Ideas

Five years ago, I decided to open an eco-friendly hardware store. Gecko Hardware was born, in part, from the explosion of green products that my team and I discovered at the show that year. When I decided to sell the company four years later, the National Hardware Show was one of the first events that the new owner and I attended together.

Cream of the Crop

One of my favorite activities at the hardware show each year is meeting the movers, shakers and celebrities who have helped build this industry. Later, as a radio host, I broadcast from the show floor and was honored to interview many inspiring attendees.

Getting in the Know to Grow

Retailers can also sharpen their skills by attending the learning sessions and keynote addresses that are offered. From organizational ideas to tips on connecting with consumers, each year’s speakers truly hit the nail on the head for those of us trying to thrive in a competitive retail environment.

This year, I am honored to be a guest speaker. I’ll share insights about how my former company mascot, an award-winning rooster, helped me grow and sell my business. Attend my presentation on Tuesday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. on the stage in the NRHA Village in the Main Lobby to garner some great ideas and share your own insights, as well.

Visit nrhaconference.com for more information about the other speakers at this year’s event.

Andrea Ridout

has owned and sold three award-winning hardware companies and has hosted home improvement and environmental radio shows. She now consults with retailers to help them grow and market their businesses. Learn more about Ridout at askandrea.com

The Big Picture

A President in Portrait

In February, the National Portrait Gallery unveiled striking portraits of former president and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama by artists K ehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.

The Obamas specifically requested both artists, and their vivid portraits mark the first time the National Portrait Gallery has commissioned presidential portraits from African-American artists.

“As a museum of history and art, we have learned over the past half-century that the best portraiture has the power to bring world leaders into dialogue with everyday Americans. These two paintings fall into that category, and we believe they will serve as an inspiration for generations to come,” National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet says.

The portraits are now displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Countdown to the Show

For the best show experience, the PDRA encourages all attendees to create a list of products, vendors and seminars deemed a priority to your business before attending the event. Check out the following best practices before landing in Las Vegas.

Self-Evaluate

In a recent interview, Jim Robisch, a senior partner of The Farnsworth Group, an industry marketing research firm, says retailers need to ask themselves, “Would I shop at this store myself?” If you’re not wowing yourself, then you’re not wowing your customers, says Robisch. Try looking at your store with new eyes. You may discover a niche you’re overlooking, a gap in inventory or tired merchandising. These findings can become top priorities going into the show.

Robisch also recommends prioritizing five ideas you’ve had within the last year. Create a plan to achieve those goals and add them to your list for the show. Find an informative seminar you can attend or a vendor that can offer solutions. Business owners often talk about expanding, modernizing or making other changes for years without doing anything, says Robisch. Why not make it happen this year?

Must-Have Show Floor Tips

Ask the Team

During the self-evaluation process, include employee opinions. Your staff members often have an understanding of what customers want since they spend a majority of their time communicating directly with shoppers. Ask your staff to make lists of the trends they’re seeing and the products and services that are missing from your store that customers continually ask about. Then compile all items into a more comprehensive list.

Also, encourage employees to share what they would change or improve in the store. Look for solutions to these concerns on the show floor and be able to return with a plan in place.

Check the Inventory

The next step is to compare the priorities you and your staff have developed against the data. Scour your inventory and sales for a clear picture of top sellers, slow movers and out-of-stock items. You may discover you need a more reliable supplier in one area or that it’s time to expand another.

Also, take time to investigate the success of previous purchases. It’s always good to know which decisions from previous shows failed in order to avoid repeating mistakes.

With everything there is to see on the show floor, it’s important to come prepared. Here are a few tips to make the most out of the event. Bring a list of ideas, another pair of eyes to help you spot cool new products and a list of what you have back home

Think Outside the Box

Be open-minded about what you see on the show floor. The National Hardware Show is one of the industry’s largest events, and you’re bound to see something you wouldn’t have previously considered. While it’s important to be realistic about the goals you set coming into the show, it’s OK to dream a little bit, too.

Have Fun With Friends

If possible, bring another member of your staff to the show. Two heads are often better than one. You will be able to discuss new ideas and products as you navigate the show floor. It’s also a great way to introduce new managers or up-and-comers to the industry and to show you are invested in their growth.

Know What’s In-Store

Keep access to your inventory close at hand while you’re on the show floor. Consider bringing a laptop or tablet with all the details so you know what you have on hand. Before you leave, ask a member of your team to be available for a quick consultation if you find a must-have item.

Special Section: The Show

Navigate in a New Direction

Each day of the show can be an opportunity for your business. You never know what new product or idea will impact your store. The PDRA encourages attendees to talk to a retailer they’ve never met, reach out to a vendor they’ve never worked with or attend a topical seminar they’ve had an interest in learning more about. Bringing an open mind and a plan of attack will help you get the most out of the 2018 show.

Find Something New

Once you’ve covered your priorities, you’ll be free to explore the most common reason retailers attend the PDRA Paint & Accessories Show at the National Hardware Show: the new products. According to exit polls, 83 percent of attendees say new products are the primary reason they attend the event. There are plenty of opportunities for discovering new products. Besides visiting with exhibitors, attendees can explore these three designated areas:

• New Product World. The newest innovations, products and trends in the home improvement industry are all in one place at the show. Look for New Product World on the map and check out the New Product World Awards for emerging products that have been judged best in their class.

• Inventors Spotlight. This area features products not yet on the market and gives retailers a glimpse at what may be the next big thing in the home improvement industry. In this area, inventors will also make pitches to potential buyers and investors. Watch for the UIA Inventors Spotlight Awards for a list of the most revolutionary products.

• New Product Launch. Located in the Central Lobby, the New Product Launch area highlights innovative products that haven’t hit the market yet. They have no presales, no prenegotiations or exclusives. The New Product Awards will feature products deemed the best by a panel of industry judges.

Set Alerts

With thousands of vendors, retailers could spend the whole event on the show floor, but that might be a missed opportunity for growth and learning. The North American Retail Hardware Association All-Industry Conference will again be offering a variety of seminars and cutting-edge keynote speeches. Be sure to set aside time to attend at least a few of the learning opportunities.

One trend that is catching fire is green building. Jason Ballard, the co-founder and president of TreeHouse, a home improvement company dedicated to offering a wide variety of sustainable products, will be a keynote speaker at the 2018 show. As paint and stain regulations and manufacturing processes transition to a healthier and more environmentally friendly product assortment, paint retailers may be interested in hearing about Ballard’s experiences with green retailing.

Don’t miss out on this and other opportunities for industry insights by getting preoccupied with vendors. Set an alert on your phone to remind you when a seminar is approaching. Also plan to attend the PDRA $5,000 Scholarship Program Award Ceremony. Every year at the show, the PDRA awards a scholarship, sponsored by the National Hardware Show, to a high school senior or college student who has been nominated by a PDRA member in good standing.

By showing your support for the event, you are encouraging a young person on their path to becoming part of the paint and decorating industry.

Be Open-Minded

Just getting away from you store for a week can help you see your course more clearly. The 2018 show will provide just that, especially if you take time to explore areas of the show filled with categories you don’t stock and take advantage of the opportunities to engage.

Have a drink and chat with old and new friends while establishing networks you can rely on for advice and ideas outside of the show. Enjoy free food and drinks at the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ party while experiencing those products in a real backyard, part of the new Ultimate Backyard area. You never know when and where inspiration may strike. By exploring cross categories, networking with a variety of retailers and listening to industry experts, you are opening the door to inspiration, innovation and more.

Leave Time to Play

Entertainment can also be rewarding, so don’t forget to make time for fun. With premarket lists completed, add some relaxation to your working vacation plans. In a town known as the world’s adult playground, there is no shortage of activities.

Stroll the Strip

For an inexpensive night out, take in the bright lights and free entertainment during a walk along Las Vegas Boulevard. Stand in awe of the fountains at Bellagio, enjoy colorful sea life in the 20,000-gallon tank at the Mirage and stay for the explosions and fireballs of the Mirage volcano. For only $30, you can be transported to Venice on an Old World Gondola ride at The Venetian.

Dine Fine

The Strip has become the new hot spot for celebrity chefs. Buddy Valastro, Guy Fieri, Giada De Laurentiis, and Bobby Flay all have eateries in the area. For burgers and milkshakes with a celebrity chef twist, check out Hubert Keller’s casual restaurant, Burger Bar, located in the Mandalay Place mall.

For an old-school fine-dining experience, make reservations at Hugo’s Cellar, a throwback to the days of Frank, Sammy and Dean. Waitstaff create tableside preparations of salads and traditional desserts of bananas Foster or cherries jubilee.

And, your Vegas trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to an all-you-can-eat buffet. You’ll find the best-rated buffets at the Wynn and the Bellagio.

Find Your Thrill

When you’re full, push back from the table and head over to one of the hundreds of shows playing in Las Vegas. See a Vegas staple like David Copperfield, the Blue Man Group, Penn & Teller or take in one of the many Cirque du Soleil shows that are running during the National Hardware Show.

To get some time in the desert sun, Vegas offers plenty of outdoor action. For those who enjoy the thrill of maneuvering heavy equipment, Dig This Las Vegas offers the opportunity to recapture the childlike fun of playing in a sandbox on a heavy-duty scale.

Finally, don’t miss the most award-winning attraction in Las Vegas. The 550-foot-tall High Roller is the world’s tallest observation wheel and a shining star on the Las Vegas Strip.

However you decide to spend your free time and floor time at the PDRA Paint & Accessories Show at the 2018 National Hardware Show, make sure that what happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas. Leverage the excitement of new product discoveries, flaming desserts and thrilling sites to create content for your social media channels so your customers will anticipate your return home even if you aren’t.

Capturing the Spectrum

Color-Matching Tools Can Expand Your Reach

Savvy paint retailers know they’re not just selling paint—they’re selling color. To do that effectively, retailers need attractive color displays and color cards, but they also need the ability to match colors accurately and efficiently. Customers may fall in love with a color, but unless the paint store can match it precisely, the store’s overall reputation is going to suffer.

Jeff Watts, paint market manager for Datacolor, observes that many home improvement retail stores are transforming themselves into “color design centers,” where customers rely on in-store professionals to help guide their color selections. “This trend means that stores and their employees need to be more equipped than ever before with color coordination tools, so customers can have the full breadth of design and painting services from the first moment they walk

through the door and are just starting to think about paint colors for a project,” Watts says.

Having reliable color matching is an important part of a paint store’s transformation into a color design resource.

“First and foremost, accuracy is key,” Watts says. “It’s expected that if you have a paint-matching system, it will give you an exact match—on the first shot. Accuracy is critical for ensuring customer trust and satisfaction.”

One of the challenges of getting an exact match is the explosion of color choices currently available to consumers. “With the popularity of Pinterest, Houzz and other home inspiration websites, it’s not uncommon for customers to find a favorite paint color online and want to bring it into their home,” Watts says. “If it’s not a paint brand you carry in your store, you’ll want to be able to look up your competitors’ colors and provide an exact match.”

Setting Yourself Apart

The ability to provide accurate color matches from virtually any sample is a way for paint retailers to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market, says Matt Adby, retail paint portfolio manager for X-Rite.

“Paint department employees are regularly asked to measure and match all sorts of small or odd-shaped samples,” Adby says. “We’ve heard everything from tree bark and pets to food, diapers, dolls and more. Today’s color-matching technology needs to be more versatile and portable than ever before in order to measure a range of samples and accurately match them.”

Because of the need for precise color matches, Adby cautions that the technology needs to do more

“Paint retailers rely on Datacolor’s 200R spectrophotometers for their proven lab-quality technology that allows you to match paint colors to swatches of all different textures and surfaces.”
—Jeff Watts, Datacolor

than average the colors in a sample. “This approach doesn’t provide reliable results, especially for multicolored samples. In fact, most experienced paint counter employees won’t even try to measure multicolored items. Instead they are likely to match color by their eye.”

Fortunately, advancements in technology have made multicolored matching easier.

“A new class of color-matching technology is emerging that incorporates spectrophotometry with an on-board camera, which helps retail paint departments accurately target customer samples and pick out and quantify dominant colors in multicolored samples,” Adby says. “X-Rite’s MetaVue noncontact imaging spectrophotometer is the first color-matching device on the market to do this.”

Adby explains that MetaVue provides precise color matches with an advanced smart spot image feature that matches color, taking into consideration the impact of texture and other appearance effects that typically skew measurements of materials like carpet, vinyl or fabric. “It features an easy-to-use interface with a live video preview of the actual sample and a measurement button on the instrument, reducing mistakes and waste among paint counter associates, regardless of their level of experience.”

MetaVue features an adjustable aperture size, ranging from 2 mm to 12 mm, which allows employees more flexibility in measuring samples. “With MetaVue, paint associates have the ability to easily respond to a wider range of customer samples and accurately measure them, building confidence behind the paint counter and increasing customer loyalty,” Adby says. Watts concurs that the ability to match a diverse range of samples is critical for paint stores. “Paint retailers rely on Datacolor’s 200R spectrophotometers, or ‘spectros,’ for their proven lab-quality technology that allows you to match paint colors to swatches of all different textures and surfaces,” he says. “The 200R, coupled with Datacolor PAINT color-matching software, offers the same level of performance as seen in manufacturers’ color labs. This ensures customer satisfaction on the first shot, and you don’t have to waste time, money and resources on mistinted paint.”

John Kowalski, business line and development manager of Paint POS Color Matching for BYK-Gardner has a system of creating databases and maintaining the integrity of those databases. “Our system works efficiently and effectively as it’s intended—to take a custom match or a color lookup and then dispense the color accurately using the retailer’s specific bases and colorants,” Kowalski says. “By using an accurate starting point (the databases), the hardware and software technology perform extremely well, reducing mistints and waste while delivering a great customer experience.”

Datacolor’s ColorReader tool saves users time when searching for a paint color on the go.
“When you talk about color technology, it’s easy to get deep in the weeds with regard to color and the science behind it, but in a retail environment, what really matters is that the process is simple.”
—John Kowalski, BYK-Gardner USA

Ensuring a Smooth Workflow

While accuracy is important to a color-matching operation, Kowalski points out that several other attributes are important as well. “Accuracy, reliability, durability—those are all absolute givens. If you’re not providing those things, then you’re not in the market,” Kowalski says. “However, I find there are a couple of differentiators, the most important of which is the software.”

Not only does state-of-the-art software ensure greater accuracy in color matching, but it also facilitates a smoother, more efficient workflow.

“When you talk about color technology, it’s easy to get deep in the weeds with regard to color and the science behind it, but in a retail environment, what really matters is that the process is simple,” Kowalski says. “All the bells and whistles pertaining to the color science technology don’t need to be seen on the screen in front of the

sales associate. The associate just wants to take a measurement, select the right products and dispense them. Especially for stores that do a high volume, it’s important to get through that process quickly, with as few mouse clicks as possible, to avoid creating a bottleneck at your paint counter.”

BYK-Gardner’s current automatch software provides a complete and efficient solution for the retail paint environment. However, the company will take its system to the next level this summer, when it launches a next-generation color-matching software solution that will feature built-in business intelligence to maximize workflow efficiencies. The company sought input from its customers—both large and small retailers—to ensure that the new introduction will meet their needs.

“It’s a great new offering that is geared to helping retailers sell more paint while streamlining their whole operation,” Kowalski says.

At X-Rite, the focus is on customer- and retailerfriendly software—known as ColorDesigner PLUS— that produces expert results in a flexible, adaptable workflow that can be configured to meet the individual retailer’s needs.

“Paired with MetaVue, it can revolutionize paint counter operations,” Adby says. “It expedites and refines the paint selection process, eliminating wasted effort and needless formulation errors. It has the ability to connect to a paint dispenser system for fast delivery of paint color formulations, mix the customer’s color in the paint product

The MetaVue color-matching system by X-Rite can capture color from nearly any surface. Here, the system is matching the color from a piece of vinyl that a customer brought into the retail store.

they want and an option to look up colors across paint lines. With one efficient package, the paint department becomes a color design center.”

X-Rite offers a series of bundled solutions, allowing paint retailers the ability to easily assemble an exact solution to meet their needs. The W-Series product bundles encompass five different combinations of hardware and software to accommodate operations of all sizes. In addition, the company offers a series of handheld 45:0 and sphere spectrophotometers that make it easy for paint professionals to capture color measurements in the field.

“All of these can communicate with ColorDesigner PLUS for fast paint mixing and to store customer information for future reference,” Adby says.

At Datacolor, Watts explains that PAINT is customized to the individual retailer. “The software is designed just for your store—for example, the interface can be customized or the program can print custom labels. We understand the need to simplify your workflow, which is why you can manage your dispenser from one software and one PC. If you ever need help, we offer best-in-class support and we’re just a quick phone call away.”

Color Matching on the Go

Another trend in color technology is the rise in of portable solutions. Two devices that can take color measurements virtually anywhere are the Nix Pro Color Sensor and Nix Mini Color Sensor.

“The Nix Pro Color Sensor is our flagship device that helps solve the toughest of color problems by offering professionals an innovative, objective, and accurate solution to the age-old problem of ‘What color is that?’” says Matthew Sheridan, CEO and founder of Nix Sensor Ltd.

The Nix Pro Color Sensor can measure the exact color of any surface and provide instant in-app matches to a massive color library. “With the ability to import your own custom libraries, conduct A/B color comparisons and customize your scan settings, it makes quick work of measuring colors around you,” Sheridan says. “Whether you’re working with paint, vinyl, leather, plastic, dyes or fabric, the Nix Pro will provide quick and objective color measurement in seconds. Each device will block out all ambient light, meaning you’ll get an accurate reading no matter where you are.”

The Nix Pro color-matching system is a portable device that connects to a smartphone app over Bluetooth. The app’s database can match to more than 31,000 colors from the most popular paint companies.

Sheridan describes the device as perfect for professionals like paint retailers, color consultants and lab technicians. “These are professionals who love the science behind color and work closely with technical color data, rely on custom color libraries and quality control protocols,” he says. “Whether it’s being used with our off-the-shelf software or in a fully custom white-labeled solution, the Nix Pro will help clients through color selection and purchasing. Ultimately it will help optimize your clients’ buying processes by instilling confidence in paint color selection.”

The company’s newest product is the Nix Mini Color Sensor, the first colorimeter of its kind to offer compact color matching to consumers across the globe. Weighing only 0.6 ounces, the Nix Mini is 1 ½ by 1 inch—smaller than a ping pong ball and able to fit on a keychain.

“We have a dedicated team that meticulously digitizes each and every color, collection and brand in our app libraries, which means you have access to the industry’s best color matches.”
—Matthew Sheridan, Nix Sensor Ltd.

“The Nix Mini will give anyone an eye for color. It will help you find the right paint matches for your home and pull color inspiration for digital designs,” Sheridan says. “All you have to do is place it on a surface, and it will provide instant in-app paint matches, suggest color harmonies and even show digital color values like sRGB, CMYK and HEX.”

Users can save colors in the free companion iOS and Android apps and create their own color swatches. The app library includes more than 31,000 colors and is growing.

The Nix Mini’s compact size and lightweight design allow for ultimate portability, making it an excellent tool for interior designers, architects, painters, renovators and other professionals in the paint industry.

Both the Nix Pro and Nix Mini send their data wirelessly via Bluetooth to the paired smartphone apps. From there, the app reads the data and selects the best paint match or lists the exact color measurement, depending on the app or hardware being used.

“We have a dedicated team that meticulously digitizes each and every color, collection and brand in our app libraries, which means you have access to the industry’s best color matches,” Sheridan says, adding that high-quality databases are essential to gaining accurate and reliable color data.

The Nix Mini Color Sensor is designed to put color-matching technology in the hands of consumers and DIY painters. The device matches a variety of surfaces and suggests complementary colors and displays digital color values.

Paint Center One is a complete paint-matching system by BYK-Gardner, which was developed with the help of dispensing company Italtinto. Retailers receive all the equipment they need to match and dispense paint with the system.

“Our experienced team of engineers is always available to help produce quality solutions for paint retailers across the globe,” Sheridan says. “We don’t believe in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. We’ll make your life easier through purpose-built color solutions that put your unique business case and ROI first and foremost.”

X-Rite, meanwhile, has introduced a unique solution, called Color-Eye®, that is used in conjunction with a smartphone. “The user simply places the Color-Eye calibration card on the inspiration item, then takes a photo of the color, and the advanced app technology corrects for color variation coming from the phone or differences caused by lighting in the room,” Adby says.

X-Rite’s professional color-selection device, CAPSURE®, allows users to measure small samples down to 1 mm or automatically extract up to four colors from a pattern. “Professionals need to be able to measure any type of sample while on the go,” Adby says. “CAPSURE can be connected to a phone or on can be used on its own.”

Datacolor has recently introduced ColorReader, a small, portable and affordable tool that enables contractors, designers and consumers to find, coordinate, save and share paint colors straight from their smartphones. The ColorReader offers precise identification of paint colors across all major paint brands, providing more than 90 percent time saving

compared to a traditional color search with a fan deck. It also offers the highest accuracy among all tools available on the market. Professionals can use this tool to save colors to a palette and send them directly to the paint store, office team or client.

“Paint retailers can sell ColorReader products in their stores as a tool for contractors and customers who are looking for an on-the-go solution that helps save time during the color selection process,” says Watts. “It’s a necessity for any paint professional to keep on hand, especially in those situations where a client doesn’t know the exact shade of paint for repainting a wall or has a specific request to match a color to tile, flooring or another decorative element on their home.”

In addition, the ColorReader can be customized for paint retailers, helping drive brand awareness for their stores while also increasing loyalty among contractors.

A Total Process

Color matching is the first step in a process to ensure that customers receive the precise color they desire. If color matching is done correctly, but other aspects such as dispensing or mixing are done incorrectly, a mistint may result. That’s why BYK-Gardner has partnered with a dispenser company, Italtinto, to create a comprehensive solution known as Paint Center One.

provides paint retailers an all-in-one paint-mixing system to ensure their station is capable of meeting every customer’s paint-matching needs. The modern system supports retailers’ brand image of quality.

Are You Growing Your Specialty Coating Business? Application Problems?

We can help! FoamPRO® has been the leader and innovator in the Foam Painting Tool category for over 65 years. Our SOLVEX applicators are also ideal for solvent-based industrial coatings. Roller covers are available in lengths up to 18”. We welcome the opportunity to work with you to help solve any application issues you or your customers may have.

With Paint Center One, retailers have one vendor and one point of contact for shipping, installation, service, technical support and warranty. The solution includes the BYK-Gardner automatch III sensor and automatch software, Italtinto i250 simultaneous dispenser, Radia 1015 vortex mixer, a lid press, a Dell computer and a Dymo label printer.

“Having an all-inclusive paint center—with everything from one supplier—is a way to make life easier for the paint retailer,” Kowalski says. “Most importantly, it will help them sell more paint.”

Dave Christiansen, director of sales and operations for Santint USA Inc., agrees that it’s important to get every aspect of the color process right—from the color match to the dispensing to the mixing. “Most retailers today are aware that they should highlight their paint-mixing area, with color computers and automatic dispensers to show customers that they are up to date with the industry,” Christiansen says. “This setup shows that they are able to produce the desired colors.”

In the colorant-dispensing process, Christiansen points out that accuracy is increasingly important to produce the desired shades. “The color-matching computers determine a precise formula that a

dispenser needs to produce. This is not that difficult in regular-size paint cans for most manual and automatic dispensers. As the can size gets smaller, the more critical it becomes for the dispenser to be accurate. Many companies want to offer samples—usually very small cans, 8 ounces or less—and the equipment is critical to get the paint to match.”

Santint has introduced a special sample dispenser named the A4 Hummingbird, which accurately dispenses colorant down to 1/2000th of an ounce to match the colors desired in small cans, Christiansen says.

Also important to ensure the accuracy of the tinted paint is the mixing equipment. “Many times, a color, especially a deep tone, is undermixed due to carelessness or time constraints. Equipment is an important part in getting the right color.”

Gary Lalla, senior product commercialization manager at Fluid Management Inc., affirms that the growing popularity of sample sizes has made the accuracy of dispensing a formula into a smaller container extremely important. “Consumers want the ability to test a color on their walls, and it’s important to ensure that the color in a 5-gallon bucket is the exact same color that was provided in the sample,” Lalla says. “The dispensing has to be accurate down to the smallest drip.”

Fluid Management’s DVX pumps provide the required accuracy, Lalla says. “These pumps perform more quickly while also ensuring the accuracy for everything from a small sample size to a 5-gallon bucket.” Ultimately, getting the right color is all about customer satisfaction and ensuring customer loyalty. “For our part, we’re always thinking about how can we streamline the operation—how we can provide absolute accuracy with minimal clicks to keep the customer happy,” Kowalski says. “Our goal is to keep the customer experience on the positive side of the spectrum—to keep them coming back and referring their friends. For a retailer, that’s the real key.”

The Ties That Bind

Adelaide’s Paint & Decor Thrives in Coastal Georgia Community

The places we choose to call home shape us in many ways. Regions can plant ideas, mannerisms and values that can last a lifetime. For Walter Rafolski, the southeastern U.S. has been home for several decades, and working with like-minded, local businesses has helped him make Adelaide’s Paint & Decor the successful business it is today.

Adelaide’s is situated in one of the premier coastal communities of the southeast: St. Simons Island, Georgia. Located midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, the island’s population is used to the demands and desires of living on the coast. Rafolski’s decades of experience in retail hardware, distribution and paint retailing have combined to help him keep Adelaide’s current with trends and in demand in the area.

“There are times of the year when we get a lot of tourists, but we’re a year-round business,” Rafolski says. “We might lose a week for a hurricane, or just recently, we were closed on a Wednesday because the bridge was iced over and you couldn’t get to the island, but we’re a staple of the island and the surrounding area.”

The store offers a complete array of paint and sundries support for customers. The business also sells window coverings and wallcoverings. One of the staples of Adelaide’s that sets the business apart from local competition is a dedication to paint matching and custom tints, Rafolski says. His staff is dedicated to getting each customer’s paint or lacquer the correct shade, no matter the time commitment.

“We do things other stores don’t want to do,” Rafolski says. “Service is what made this store and it’s what keeps this store going.”

Stepping Away From the Wheel

Rafolski’s path toward Adelaide’s began in the retail hardware business. He stayed in that industry through the 1970s and 1980s until 1988, when he signed on as a sales representative for a paint and sundries distributor. Representing a large swath of the southeast, including Athens, Georgia, and Lake City, Florida, he came into contact with many independent paint stores.

His job led to him meeting Adelaide Jones, owner of Adelaide’s. “I was seeing Adelaide about once a week for those years, and she would tell me she was ready to get out. Every visit for years she would say that, but she never did,” Rafolski says.

Finally, in 1998, Rafolski decided to do something about it, and his life switched gears from a road warrior to a business owner.

“I guess I had seen too much steering wheel time. I was ready to go, and I could see the potential in Adelaide’s,” Rafolski says.

“No one wants to wait three days to get things. You have to have the product in stock. It’s an old adage from my hardware days, ‘One to go and one to show.’”
—Walter Rafolski, Adelaide’s Paint & Decor

The first change the new store owner made was to increase inventory throughout the store. The 2,400-square-foot location required careful planning and merchandising, but Rafolski was determined to head off problems he had seen throughout a career working with and serving independent retailers. His central tenet of service would be overshadowed by a lack of available products or long wait times, he says, and it had been an issue at Adelaide’s before.

“I had a painter tell me once that he would try to order five gallons of paint and he’d be told the truck would deliver on Tuesday,” Rafolski says.

“No one wants to wait three days to get things. You have to have the product in stock. It’s an old adage from my hardware days, ‘One to go and one to show.’”

On top of increased inventory and variety of products, Adelaide’s has also been updated with new mixing equipment to maintain the high standard Rafolski puts on the store’s custom tinting service.

As an independent paint and decorating retail outlet, Adelaide’s Paint & Decor serves full-time residents as well as vacationers in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Walter Rafolski bought the business in 1998 after working for many years for a paint wholesaler.

Working With Friends

Having worked for so long as a sales representative in the paint and sundries industry, Rafolski is focused on developing relationships to serve his customers. Whether that’s working with his daughter Rebecca McKenzie, the office manager at Adelaide’s, the experienced staff of five full-time employees at the store or developing close ties with vendors, Rafolski has established strong relationships and has made his knowledge of the region a focus for his business.

That attitude fits in well with one of Adelaide’s vendors, Richard’s Paint Manufacturing Co. The manufacturer, founded in 1954 and currently based out of Rockledge, Florida, has been a key partner for Adelaide’s since Rafolski took over the business. He credits the company’s knowledge of the area and personal service as some of the qualities that keep the relationship strong.

An example of this personal service was a request Adelaide’s made on behalf of a commercial client.

A railroad client had been using a particular shade of yellow paint for years along their tracks until their supplier went out of business. The order, about 50 gallons, would normally have been too small for a vendor to make such a specific color, Rafolski says, but a quick order to Richard’s, and Adelaide’s had the shade and was filling the railroad’s spray cans and making repeated 50-gallon orders.

“A small batch for Richard’s isn’t a problem, plus they understand how paint works in the southeast,” Rafolski says. “Richard’s has really good products at a really good price point, and they’re a southeast company. As far as humidity, mildew and other things we have to deal with down here, they understand how to manufacture paint that can work in this region.”

Other staff includes Lonnie Lynch, who has been with the business since Rafolski acquired it in 1998, Chris McKenzie, Josh McKenzie and Ken Newton. Lynch’s experience and knowledge in the industry is a big draw for customers, Rafolski says, and the whole staff supports the company’s mission.

“Chris is our color matcher with a great natural eye, Josh’s attitude is infectious and Ken easily manages customers’ tough problems,” he says.

Stellar Service

While Rafolski has kept Adelaide’s a destination store for painters, DIYers and commercial clients, the knowledge and skill of his employees and the service they provide remains central to the store’s success. He points to the one-on-one interaction he believes is necessary for proper paint matching and selection as a primary reason that independent paint retailers are still a force in the industry.

“The only time we run into trouble is if a manufacturer changes the formulations, but even then we have the knowledge and experience to tweak formulas to get it as close as possible to what the customer is expecting.”

Given the density of vacation homes around St. Simons Island, Adelaide’s works with a large group of decorators who rely on the store’s mixing ability to best provide options for homeowners who want the perfect shade in their homes. The staff and products have to be top-notch to meet that demand, Rafolski says.

“It’s the only reason that Amazon doesn’t scare me yet, and I do say ‘yet,’ but it’s a major part of this business to have customers return paint because it looks different under their home lighting,” he says.

Another way Adelaide’s stands apart is in its record keeping. Harkening back to precomputer days, Rafolski has long focused on keeping the precise formulas for his customers’ custom paints on file and available. This system ensures that if a customer wants to reorder paint every week or years down the road, they can still get the precise mixture. Before he moved his records to computer files for easier searching and categorizing, Rafolski would paint a card with the paint and write the exact formula along with the customer’s name to keep these records. Records now are easier to make, he says, but no less important.

“The only time we run into trouble is if a manufacturer changes the formulations, but even then we have the knowledge and experience to tweak formulas to get it as close as possible to what the customer is expecting,” Rafolski says.

The next generation of homeowners has also been keeping the Adelaide’s staff on its toes. With more customers bringing in projects found on social media as opposed to swatches,

Upon taking over the business, Adelaide’s Paint & Decor owner Walter Rafolski boosted the number of SKUs available for his customers. His time as a sales representative for a paint wholesaler helped him develop his paint retailing business.

Red Devil Equipment Co., the industry-leading mixer, shaker and mixing equipment manufacturer, is now RADIA. A small change perhaps. Rafolski and his team must constantly stay relevant and updated with the expectations of consumers. “We’re always keeping track of colors of the year and what hues our customers are asking for. We’re seeing more off-white demand lately along with calming colors like gray,” Rafolski says.

He particularly enjoys seeing how many customers younger than 45 years old are taking on painting and decorating projects usually assisted by a smartphone app showing a completed project. While Rafolski is quick to caution against using a screen to gauge a color’s suitability, he’s confident in Adelaide’s ability to get it right.

“People have very specific desires with paint, and we’ll end up cutting a color in half multiple times to get the colorant just right for their project,” Rafolski says. “What we’re excited to see is the care younger people are putting into their paint choices and how much pride they take in their projects and in their homes. That makes getting the color right so important for us, because we want that customer to have no regrets about their choices.”

Come on In

5 In-Store Events to Generate a Buzz

Now that shoppers can get what they need with a swipe on their cellphones or a quick run to big-box stores, small retailers must work harder than ever to draw traffic. Fortunately, studies have shown that despite a steady growth in online sales, most consumers still prefer to touch products and are loyal to brick-and-mortar retailers who offer positive experiences. Creating positive experiences is a key way independent retailers have succeeded in drawing attention to their stores. Beyond providing excellent customer service, some have reached out through shoppertainment initiatives and in-store events. Reports reveal that the most successful activities have two important components: they appeal to groups, and they help create special memories for attendees. With these parameters in mind, we offer five buzzworthy in-store events to entice new customers to cross your threshold.

Pop-Ups

Thanks to millennials, the local maker and cottage industry crafter seems to be reshaping and in some depressed areas, even saving the state of small business. Beyond e-commerce, these independent creators often rely on seasonal fairs and

short-term pop-up shops to sell their goods. Why not take advantage of this trend and prop up local talent by offering a corner of your store for a pop-up shop? You can gain access to the maker’s followers and customers and create a heightened sense of urgency that comes with the limited-time offering. Choose a maker who complements your inventory, and you may have a perfectly symbiotic relationship.

Pinterest and Power Shopping

Paint stores have always had an inherent in-store activity in the form of how-to classes. Yet, with Pinterest and other online decor sites highlighting new trends and techniques daily, some paint retailers say they no longer feel like trend experts because they have customers seeking advice on paint techniques they haven’t even heard of. Instead, they’re racing to catch up. Instead of offering classes on the latest techniques and trends, offer an environment where like-minded customers who have a passion for Pinterest-inspired projects can gather to share and test ideas. Retailers can provide the space, snacks and access to supplies and then step back. Let your customers’ creativity drive the event. Invite groups like neighborhood organizations, moms’ groups, designers, amateur artists and families to use the space.

‘Edutainment’ for the Pros

Most professionals are looking for ways to expand their knowledge of the industry and stay on top of the latest trends. Why not make your store a destination for ongoing learning practices for paint and decor professionals? Invite design experts, educators and vendors to give talks while customers and local professional groups munch appetizers, sip wine and browse aisles. Add in a local entertainer or comedian to make the event lighthearted and fun.

Get Physical and Green

Running and biking clubs are popular in active neighborhoods, and yoga is popping up all over. One thing many of these hearthealthy organizations need is a meeting place. With an open mind, any location can become a launching point for active customers. You may have a green space, a large parking lot or a rooftop perfect for yoga at sunrise or as a starting line for a rural weekend bike ride. When the workout is finished, offer your guests a bottled water and a coupon.

Charitable Spending

Many retailers have dedicated a day or weekend to giving a percentage of sales to their favorite charity. Millennials and Gen Z consumers care how retailers interact with the community. Local retailers already have an advantage over national chains because more of the money spent with them stays locally, but you can also gain attention from younger customers by offering them charitable spending attached to their purchases.

Promote these events on your social media channels before, during and after to create excitement. The content you’ll create with photos and testimonials can help capture new followers and new customers. Also, use the event to leverage loyalty programs. Encourage signups for mailing lists and loyalty programs, and offer coupons and discounts to be used later.

A Round of Applause

The PDRA hosted its first-ever retailer roundtable at the Lancaster Florida Buying Market, held Feb. 16-18 at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.

Retailers from throughout the paint and decorating industry gathered on Friday afternoon prior to the opening of the market floor to discuss best practices regarding general operations, marketing and merchandising. The group of about 30 retailers shared what has worked for their businesses.

“The first-ever PDRA roundtable was a great opportunity for retailers to come together and learn from each other,” says PDRA CEO LeAnn Day, who moderated the event. “The PDRA exists to create spaces for independent retailers to share their ideas and develop new relationships within the industry. We look forward to offering more of these events in the future.”

The event was made possible through the generosity of Lancaster, which helped coordinate the meeting room, and PPG, which sponsored the event.

Ram Board Wants to Help Independents Succeed in Floor Protection

Ram Board is making waves in the floor protection category. From an idea on a movie set to a high-quality, American-made product that keeps floors clean and clients happy, Ram Board is another product that could help independent retailers boost sales.

The company continues to research, develop and create innovative products that solve problems and address needs in the construction industry. A 100 percent employee-owned company, Ram Board takes pride in its products, its commitment to the industry and the reputation of its brand.

To learn more about the history of Ram Board and how the company serves the independent channel, Paint & Decorating Retailer talked to Elliot Piltzer, vice president of sales at Ram Board.

Strong floor protection is something every painter needs, whether they are a professional or a DIYer. Ram Board gives independent retailers an edge in the category with its ability to protect against impact and spills.

Paint & Decorating Retailer (PDR): Tell us about the history of your company.

Elliot Piltzer (EP): The idea for Ram Board was born in the film industry when our founder, Davy Muxlow, was on the set of a major motion picture in 1999. Looking around the set, Davy noticed various scraps of random materials being used to protect floors from filming equipment and heavy foot traffic. Thinking that the floors should be better and more evenly protected, the idea for Ram Board temporary floor protection was born.

Davy began working on the concept and developed our proprietary formula at our original headquarters in Burbank, California. Having a family in the construction industry, he knew this category was greatly needed on job sites and movie sets. Knowing he had a high-quality, durable and high-performing product, he began selling Ram Board across Southern California to lumberyards and building material suppliers. The performance of the brand quickly developed contractor loyalty and demand for Ram Board from the West Coast to nationwide.

PDR: What’s unique about Ram Board products in the category?

EP: Ram Board is the true original in the temporary floor protection category. Contractors no longer need to source bits and pieces of boxes or use flimsy rosin paper to try to protect floors. We create high-quality and easy-to-use solutions to protect floors, which help construction professionals protect their profits.

With that in mind, we recently went to work creating another new solution-based product that works exceptionally well for both professional painters and DIYers. Painter’s board meets the market demand, providing impact- and spill-resistance combined with the flexibility that painters require.

PDR: Why is the independent paint channel important for Ram Board?

EP: Our products were first sold at independent lumberyards and building materials suppliers. We continue that business model today, servicing accounts with the same dedication to service and commitment to helping retailers grow their sales. We remain dedicated to independent retailers’ success, whether they have one location or one hundred.

PDR: How can your products help independent retailers compete?

EP: We support independent retailers by generating and sending leads for our products directly back to them. We don’t sell directly to the end user, but we do create product demand by marketing heavily to them. There is strong brand loyalty with contractors to Ram Board and that means repeat sales for independents who sell our products.

PDR: What kind of support do you offer retailers who sell your products?

EP: We provide sample squares of our floor protection products, custom flyers, authorized dealer marketing kits, leads, POP packaging and banners. We also offer free custom logo printing. Ram Board territory managers are available to facilitate product knowledge training sessions and attend on-site contractor events. We conduct web-based training sessions and will partner with each location to best meet their needs to grow the Ram Board brand and increase sales.

Having brand presence at the nation’s largest industry trade shows each year generates thousands of new end-user leads which are sent directly to Ram Board dealers.

Ram Board is committed to serving retailers around the world from its headquarters in Valencia, California.

HYDE GROUP Construction Division rolls out high-end paint applicator program to U.S. retailers and pro suppliers

The Canadian Connection

Hyde Group evolves from a U.S. manufacturer to a North American Consumer Products Group.

Ten years after I.P. Hyde launched Hyde Manufacturing in 1875, two Hyde employees migrated to Canada to start their own company. That company was A. Richard – which, like Hyde, was destined to dominate a number of pro tool categories in its own country.

Fast forward to 2003, when Hyde purchased A. Richard and began a transition from U.S. manufacturer to North American Consumer Products Group. Today, HYDE® and RICHARD comprise the Hyde Group Construction Division, and deliver impressive North American market share in high-quality tools for drywall, paint, tile, masonry, wall repair, sanding, and other categories.

O CANADA

Category managers for RICHARD, in Canada, and HYDE®, in the U.S., share updates on product development via a conferencing system.

The group’s latest success story: a robust paint applicator program created and sold extensively in Canada. That program is now available to U.S. retailers and pro suppliers.

While Hyde supplies a number of international markets, Canada is essentially Hyde Group’s second home. “We have a long history there,” noted Hyde Group President Rob Scoble, “with a large manufacturing plant in Quebec province, an excellent reputation for supply chain management, and substantial retail placements based on RICHARD as Canada’s number one pro brand in its categories.

Hyde’s evolution into a North American supplier was both timely and fortuitous, Scoble notes. “In the last few years, a large number of our U.S. customers have expanded into Canada. Our supplier capacity is now at a premium for helping major customers grow that market.”

Perhaps most important is the rich contribution both Hyde Group companies make to category management. “We have similar expertise, but we also each have specialties.” says Corey Talbot, Vice President of Sales and Product Development for the Construction Division. “Richard, for example, is very strong in high-end paint applicators, tile tools and sanding. Together we bring significant innovation to many categories.”

Hyde Group packaging has been North American-compliant for nearly a decade, he added, using a three-language format that meets U.S. and Canadian standards. “We’re a very experienced partner for companies doing business beyond the border.”

A Colorful History

The Detroit Historical Society has partnered with the Motor City Paint Co. to invite museumgoers to make their mark on Detroit.

Recently, Motor City Paint displayed 25 giant, vibrant paint strips at the Detroit Historical Museum and asked visitors to help name the colors with ideas inspired by the city of Detroit. Motor City Paints will soon choose the best names for its new paint line and give whoever submitted a winning entry a $100 credit for free Motor City Paint Co. products. A grand prize winner will be chosen from all winning entries and will receive a $1,000 paint makeover from the company.

“Bringing the community into a project broadens the perspective of the exhibition or program but also gives the visitors a feeling of ownership and deeper meaning that will stay with them longer.”

Tracy Irwin, director of exhibitions and collections for the Detroit Historical Society, says the exhibition came about after the owner of Motor City Paint Co. reached out to research museum artifacts to influence its latest line of paints. Irwin says the exhibition has ignited visitors, who supplied plenty of options for Motor City Paint Co.’s latest offerings.

“Visitors are looking for ways to interact and engage with their museums and cultural institutions,” Irwin says. “Bringing the community into a project broadens the perspective of the exhibition or program but also gives the visitors a feeling of ownership and deeper meaning that will stay with them longer.”
