A STORY ABOUT RESILIENCE TO REBUILD There’s one thing we’ve learned throughout our 50 years serving communities in the Rio Grande Valley: growth doesn’t always come easy. But the path to growth often reveals what a business is made of. At Matt’s Building Materials, we’ve experienced both steady expansion and unexpected challenges, and each has helped shape who we are today.

After losing a store to fire in 2022, we made the decision to rebuild not just quickly, but thoughtfully. That process pushed us to evaluate every aspect of our operation from store layout to merchandising to customer experience. The result has been meaningful progress, a renewed commitment to serving our communities, and increases across ticket size, sales, profitability and overall performance.

A big part of our ability to be agile and respond to whatever has come our way is due to our ongoing relationship with Orgill. Following the fire at our Pharr, Texas location, Orgill’s programs and planning support gave us a strong framework to rebuild and improve while still allowing us to tailor decisions to our market’s needs. Whether it’s merchandising strategies or promotional programs, Orgill’s expert guidance and input has helped us move forward with confidence.

We’ve also benefited from strong support at the local level. Our sales representative has been a consistent resource, helping us identify opportunities, stay organized, and execute effectively.

The Bright Side of Customer Service

I

recently had a customer experience that has been rattling around in my head for weeks. It was a bad encounter that incorporated AI and felt like the company was putting profit over customer service—way over. The experience was bad because of what was missing.

I brought my car to a local dealership for a routine oil change. After years of positive experiences there, I expected the usual conversation: a service advisor walking me through the vehicle’s condition and offering an opinion based on experience.

Instead, I received a lengthy estimate exceeding $4,000 with a technician video along with obviously AI-generated recommendations.

Four grand was a bit more than the anticipated hundred-buck oil change.

So I watched the video multiple times, reviewed each line item of the estimate and conducted my own research online. By the end of the process, I approved closer to $1,000 in repairs.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like technology. Innovation can make our lives easier. But this customer service

experience made me think about how businesses adopt technology and the ways in which human experience and expertise still fit in.

For years, one of the dealership’s greatest strengths was its people.

Service advisors would tell customers, “If this were my car, here’s what I’d do.” Those conversations built trust because they reflected judgment, experience and an understanding of customers’ priorities.

Technology excels at collecting data.

People provide context. Hardware retailers understand this dynamic as well as anyone.

Decorative fixtures incorporate smart technology. Outdoor lighting integrates with home automation systems.

Consumers can fine-tune brightness, color temperature and schedules from their phone.

Yet amid all that innovation, customers need guidance. A homeowner selecting recessed lighting may need help understanding beam spread and color temperature.

A contractor may be looking for a complete package of fixtures, controls and accessories. A shopper who’s replacing a bulb might appreciate a quick explanation of lumens and compatibility.

That human connection needs to shine through. Founded in 1945, Robertson’s Building Center & Supply in Malvern, Ohio, serves a market shaped by oil-and-gas activity, with customers often seeking products they need immediately rather than waiting for delivery.

How are sales and customer counts so far this year? Sales are up maybe up 5% to 8%. Harsher winter conditions created more activity. The biggest thing we’re noticing is that people are becoming more sensitive to price, staying away from bigger-ticket items. I would consider our area a lower-income

demographic; we have a lot of aging customers and those who are thrifty even in good times. What’s unique for us is that we have a lot of transient oil-and-gas workers who set up campers and mobile homes. New construction has been suppressed.

There’s more commercial economic activity from transient workers because they’re away from home and need supplies immediately.

Robertson’s Building Center & Supply continues to refine its assortments, adding brands such as Milwaukee while emphasizing convenience items and quick-fix solutions that meet immediate customer needs.

What’s unique about your business? We carry a mix of products, and even things like hardware candy are a great add-on at the register. We spend a lot of time working with staff so customers don’t become more anxious waiting for answers. If we don’t have something, we try to find it as fast as possible. Customers see us as a place for merchandise and advice. We have 15 employees and a 15,000-square-foot store.

Best niches? A higher level of customer service and personality.

The box stores are a great place to go—unless you want to find some help. It’s not always an issue of price. A lot of customers are frustrated and anxious and looking for a quick way to get through what they’re doing. The hardest position to develop is the customer service associate or salesperson.

Surprise recent bestsellers?

Instant-gratification items—things customers are going to eat, use or throw away—continue to do well.

are important. Convenience items remain strong. We’ve also become a little more brand-specific and have brought in Milwaukee products.

Any new initiatives planned for the rest of 2026? We’re trying to figure out how to get rid of products that have been sitting in the store for years. It’s an old-school philosophy that can be hard to change. We need to reorganize the store in 4-foot sections within each category and make it easier to shop. We’re trying to shrink our overall offerings and get better at providing an overall solution. Younger shoppers—and what they’re seeing on YouTube—can drive inventory changes very quickly. How are sales and customer counts so far this year? Sales are fine. We had an ice storm and some inclement weather, so the first quarter got off to a rocky start. The ice storm certainly helped us catch up a little.

We’re up a few points and having a good year. We’re in a growing town, a suburb of Charlotte—we have a lot of people moving in, and that’s helping. Growth in the Charlotte market continues to be positive for us, driving demand for home improvement and outdoor living.

At Pointer’s Ace Hardware in Concord, North Carolina, power equipment is a key growth driver, accounting for more than half of sales at the retailer’s primary location.

HOW’S BUSINESS? What’s unique about your business?

One thing we continue to reinvest in—that continues to grow and differentiate us—is our power equipment business.

Power equipment accounts for over 50% of sales at our primary location.

Best niches? Power equipment is definitely a strength for us. Ace has really helped us grow in paint and outdoor living.

We sell more grills now in a month than we used to sell in a year, and those categories complement our power equipment business well.

Surprise recent bestsellers? Some of the staple categories seem to have slowed down.

Ace has been strong with its birdseed offering, and we’ve moved through a lot of bird supplies recently.

Any new initiatives for the rest of 2026?

There’s so much economic uncertainty right now that we’re treading water the rest of the year. We’re staying focused on the business and remaining flexible as conditions evolve.

Sales have been consistent so far. Advertising and national advertising through Ace have been good. We’ve had a few businesses move out of the area, but overall things have remained steady. We pay attention to changes in the local business environment and neighborhood activity.

The movement of businesses in and out of the area can have an impact on customer traffic and purchasing patterns. Our customer mix is roughly 70% residential, though we also serve our fair share of contractors and business customers.

What’s unique about your business? We offer hard-to-find items. That includes older-model plumbing stems for Portland’s older homes, which really caters to our local demographic. We also carry certain brands and products that are exclusive to Ace, such as Big Green Egg. Best niches? Paint is our largest department and biggest revenue

driver. We carry Benjamin Moore, Ace paint lines and Clark + Kensington.

Surprise recent bestsellers?

This time of year, air conditioners and cooling supplies have done very well.

We’ve also moved a lot of soils; our biggest departments continue to be lawn and garden and paint.

Any new initiatives planned for the rest of 2026? We’re focused on executing well in our core categories, maintaining strong customer service and continuing to meet the needs of our neighborhood customers.

How does that shape the decisions you make day to day?

Ryan DeArment: Carrying a 5-generation legacy comes with a sense of responsibility. When a company has been around since 1886, you have to think beyond the next quarter. We’re working to preserve what generations of employees, customers and partners have built. That creates a strong sense of accountability, especially to the people on the factory floor and

We’re doing things differently in how we run the business operationally. We’ve brought in outside talent, reorganized leadership and implemented systems such as EOS [Entrepreneurial Operating System] to increase discipline and decision-making speed. It’s about building a more scalable, data-driven organization. We’re consistent and strong in our commitment to U.S. manufacturing, our obsession with quality over shortcuts, our belief that people come before machines and our focus on long-term relationships over short-term wins.

What are the biggest business pressures you’re facing right now?

Our current environment reflects strong demand and the opportunity to grow. Over the past two years, we’ve navigated dynamic market conditions, including demand surges that were influenced by tariff-related activity, while continuing to strengthen our production capacity and service performance.

We’re addressing workforce transitions by enhancing our recruiting and developing talent to offset retirements. At the same time, we’ve adapted to extended lead times in equipment sourcing and maintenance by improving planning and supplier engagement.

These actions position us well to meet customer expectations, expand capacity and continue to deliver high-demand products with increasing efficiency and reliability.

Channellock has long been associated with U.S. manufacturing. How do you evaluate that commitment when you’re competing against lower-cost global products?

Through the lens of value, not just cost. While competing against imports is challenging, quality, durability and trust still matter deeply to both independent retailers and their customers.

You’ve expanded beyond core pliers into adjacent categories. How do you decide which products fit the brand and where to draw the line?

Our expansion strategy is centered on whether a product delivers the same level of trust as our core pliers.

Growth matters, but brand integrity matters more.

BRIGHT IDEAS: SMART, STYLISH, CONNECTED LED adoption continues to reshape the lighting aisle, with 63% of American households now using LEDs for most or all indoor lighting, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

L

ighting has long been a core hardware category, but today’s aisle bears surprisingly little resemblance to that of a decade ago.

Advances in LED technology, the growth of smart-home systems and consumers’ desire to personalize their living spaces have transformed

lighting from a replacement purchase into an opportunity for upgrades and project sales.

LEDs continue to dominate the category. Residential LED products use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy

Saver: LED Lighting guidance, updated this year. The continued migration to LED technology has fundamentally reshaped the market and reduced overall energy consumption, according to the Department of Energy.

The shift has been rapid. By 2024, 63% of U.S. households reported using LEDs for most or all indoor lighting, up from just 4%in 2015, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2024 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, published earlier this year.

Over the same period, the share of households relying primarily on incandescent or halogen bulbs fell to just 10%, according to the EIA. LEDs are also becoming the dominant installed technology across homes and businesses. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2020 U.S. Lighting Market Characterization report, released in 2024, found that LEDs represented roughly 48% of the installed lighting base in residential and commercial buildings.

The report further noted that average wattage per installed lighting unit has declined significantly as consumers replace legacy technologies with high-efficiency LED products.

For hardware retailers, this transition creates opportunities beyond simple bulb replacement.

SMART HOMES FUEL LIGHTING GROWTH

Smart lighting represents one of the category’s fastest-growing segments. The global smart LED lighting market was valued at some $27.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $68.5 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research’s Smart LED Lighting Market Size & Trends Report, published in 2025.

Researchers attributed much of this growth to increasing smart-home adoption and rising consumer interest in energy management.

Connected lighting products continue to evolve as well.

Features such as voice control, automated schedules and app-based management have become increasingly common, according to ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Smart Lighting guidance. ENERGY STAR notes that connected lighting systems can reduce energy use by ensuring that lights operate only when needed.

Interoperability is becoming increasingly important as consumers add devices from multiple brands.

For many retailers, lighting is lined up, straight shelf and merchandised by category—bulbs in one aisle, fixtures in another. At Rangeley Lakes Builders Supply Co. in Rangeley, Maine, however, lighting is displayed much like furniture: as part of a complete room experience.

“We try to give people inspiration for how they can set things up in their own homes,” says the store’s Virginia Patnode MacFawn.

BATTERIES EVOLVE BEYOND THE BASICS Batteries remain one of hardware retail’s most dependable impulse buys, but the mix of products consumers are buying is changing.

While alkaline batteries continue to dominate household use, demand is shifting toward lithium, coin-cell and rechargeable options as homes become more connected.

According to market research from Epicor’s Industry Data Analytics, alkaline batteries accounted for roughly 68.6% of the primary battery market in the past 12 months. But primary lithium batteries are projected to grow at a faster rate through 2031 as consumers seek longer-lasting power for high-drain devices, according to Mordor Intelligence’s report Primary Battery Market— Share, Size & Industry Trends (2026– 2031). Coin and button-cell batteries are also expected to outpace broader category growth, driven by increasing use in smart-home devices, key fobs, wearables and medical devices, according to Mordor Intelligence.

That shift presents new merchandising opportunities for hardware retailers. Coin cells, once a niche category, are increasingly tied to everyday products ranging from car remotes to smart sensors.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also increased consumer education regarding the proper handling and recycling of

MANUFACTURERS CONTINUE TO INVEST IN PROFESSIONAL CUSTOMERS While economic uncertainty and a slower housing market shape the home improvement industry, recent announcements from manufacturers and suppliers suggest one customer segment remains a priority: professional contractors.

Industry research points to continued strength in contractor-driven business. The Home Improvement Research Institute’s latest forecast projects the professional channel will lead near-term home improvement growth before broader consumer demand gains momentum. Meanwhile, the National Association of Home Builders expects remodeling activity to increase 3% in 2026 and reports that professional remodeler sentiment remains positive, underscoring the importance of contractors to the industry’s outlook.

Manufacturers appear to be responding accordingly.

In May, Sika launched its “Bring It On” campaign, built around a complete flooring installation system designed specifically for contractors and flooring professionals, with the company highlighting solutions for installation, moisture mitigation and jobsite challenges. Sika has also continued to invest in professional

training and certification programs across its roofing and building systems businesses. Meanwhile, Sika opened a new mortar manufacturing plant in New Jersey this spring and announced a collaboration with Georgia-Pacific Building Products aimed at delivering integrated building envelope solutions for construction professionals.

Sherwin-Williams recently completed a major expansion of its Bowling Green, Kentucky, coil coatings facility, increasing production capacity by approximately 60%. The company said the investment will support growing demand from metal roofing, metal building and construction markets while likewise improving supply chain reliability and production flexibility.

In the roofing sector, CertainTeed continues to emphasize contractor certification programs, enhanced warranty offerings and impact-resistant roofing systems designed for severe-weather markets. Contractor-focused programs remain a key component of the company’s strategy, offering contractors the ability to differentiate their businesses while providing homeowners with additional warranty protection.

Tool manufacturers are also looking to capture contractor and project-driven demand. SKIL, for example, recently expanded distribution of its cordless power tool platform through new retail channels, increasing the availability of products aimed at both professionals and serious DIY users.

The trend extends to the big boxes.

Recent earnings reports from both Home Depot and Lowe’s highlighted continued emphasis on professional customers, with both retailers investing in programs, services and capabilities designed to attract contractor business.

Taken together, the announcements suggest manufacturers, suppliers and retailers continue to see contractors as one of the industry’s most attractive growth opportunities.
