he Independent Home Improvement (IHI) Conference, set against the stunning backdrop of Marco Island’s pristine beach, epitomizes the convergence of tradition and innovation in the hardware industry. This year, the Beacon Awards will shine a light on those who are not just navigating this evolving landscape but actively shaping it.
On the evening of Tuesday, August 27, the Beacon Awards will honor retailers who exemplify excellence and forward-thinking in the retail hardware industry. The winners this year are distinguished by their remarkable achievements in key aspects of their business that reflect the dynamic nature of being an independent hardware retailer.
A notable theme among the award recipients is their adeptness at balancing growth with individual store and company identity. These retailers have successfully expanded their operations, acquiring new stores and integrating them into existing companies. Their strategic growth is a testament to their keen understanding of the communities they serve. Each new location is thoughtfully managed to preserve the unique
characteristics that make it a valuable asset to the community, all while maintaining a cohesive corporate vision.
Innovation is another hallmark of this year’s winners. From cutting-edge store designs to customer-centric layouts, these retailers have redefined the shopping experience. Their commitment to modern aesthetics and practical functionality creates environments that attract and engage a diverse customer base. The integration of advanced technology, including sophisticated point-of-sale systems and data-driven tools, further enhances the shopping experience and streamlines operations.
Community involvement is deeply ingrained in the ethos of the award winners. Their commitment to local engagement and philanthropy highlights a broader dedication to their communities. Whether through supporting local traditions or contributing to charitable causes, these retailers have become hubs of their communities. This connection to the community is reflected in their business practices and reinforces their standing as trusted local institutions.

The enhancement of the customer experience is a priority for the award recipients as well. They offer extensive product ranges tailored to local needs, exceptional customer service, and expert advice for DIY projects. Their dedication to customer satisfaction is evident in their loyalty programs and personalized service, fostering longterm relationships and distinguishing them from competitors.
The Beacon Awards are more than just a recognition of past achievements; they are a celebration of the future of home improvement retailing. For me, the Beacon Awards program shares

some symbolism with the gorgeous white sand shore of Marco Island. It’s where the familiar meets the unknown, a shifting line between the solid land and the boundless sea. As waves crash rhythmically, they mark a new boundary, a natural frontier that changes with every tide. The beach, with its shifting sands and salt-kissed air, becomes a metaphor for transition—a place where the rigidity of borders softens into a fluid, ever-evolving edge. We change with the tide, with the times, and seeing how these award-winning retailers adjust is just as beautiful as a Marco Island sunset. n

his special issue of Hardware Connection marks a significant milestone for the independent hardware channel: the upcoming launch of the Independent Home Improvement (IHI) Conference. Instead of focusing on the numerous activities taking place next week in Marco Island, Fla. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the industry’s responses.
Over the 35-year history of the Hardware Conference, a few topics of conversation have remained timeless. One such topic has been the robust trade show schedule within the independent hardware channel and the persistent idea that combining similar shows would be in the best interest of the industry. Yet, the conversation would inevitably stall when the fundamental question was asked, “But would the industry support it?”
This channel has a rich and vibrant history, something that was recently reinforced when a colleague referred to me as “new.” I reminded him that I had over a decade of experience in the
“ TO EVERYONE WHO HAS TAKEN THIS LEAP OF FAITH WITH US, I AM TRULY THANKFUL. YOUR SUPPORT AND BELIEF IN THIS ENDEAVOR HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE. ”
channel, to which he replied, “Exactly, new.” Industries with long histories often have strong, entrenched brands that foster rivalries among their core participants. Challenging these established norms is often seen as a recipe for disaster.
As we began conversations about the IHI Conference with key industry leaders, I braced myself for potential

disappointment. Instead, we were met with overwhelming encouragement to continue down the path we had begun. The moment of truth came when we announced the creation of the IHI Conference and invited the entire industry to unite at a singular event.
The response has been nothing short of extraordinary. I have to constantly remind myself that this all started
Kenneth Blanchard’s quote, “None of us is as smart as all of us.”
To everyone who has taken this leap of faith with us, I am truly thankful. Your support and belief in this endeavor have made it possible.
As we move forward, let us continue to work together, strengthening our industry for the future. The IHI Conference is not just an event; it’s a testament to what we can achieve

As the independent hardware industry gears up for one of its most anticipated events of the year, the Beacon Awards ceremony is poised to be a highlight of the Independent Home Improvement Conference, taking place from August 27-29, 2024, at the luxurious JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort in Marco Island, Fla. This annual celebration of excellence will honor the best and brightest in the hardware retail sector, setting the stage for a memorable evening of recognition and reflection on industry achievements.
The Beacon Awards, introduced by Hardware Connection in 2013, have become synonymous with outstanding performance and innovation within the independent hardware and home improvement community. This year, the ceremony will showcase the Retail Beacon Award winners and the Best New Store Award recipients and offers a look at the future of the industry.
The Retail Beacon Award honors the crème de la crème of independent hardware retailers, celebrating their achievements in various aspects of their operations. This year’s winners will be selected from retailers affiliated with Do it Best and Orgill, who are wholesale sponsors of the awards. These awards acknowledge not just
business success, but also the retailers’ commitment to community involvement, exemplary store design, and innovative merchandising.
In addition to the Retail Beacon Awards, the Beacon Award for Best New Store highlights outstanding new stores that have made a significant impact within their first few years of operation. The Beacon Award for Best New Store recognizes the dynamic expansion of existing businesses and the fresh energy brought by new market entrants.
The Beacon Awards ceremony promises to be an elegant affair, featuring a dinner banquet where honorees will receive their awards and be recognized for their contributions to the industry. The Beacon Awards ceremony will take place in Calusa 6 & 7 on the third floor. The event also includes a cocktail reception where attendees can connect with fellow retailers and industry professionals. The evening will culminate with the presentation of the Beacon Award trophies and a feature article in Hardware Connection magazine, highlighting the accomplishments of the winners.
Reflecting on past Beacon Award winners provides insight into the caliber of excellence being celebrated. For instance, the 2023 winners included Carr Hardware

provide customers with a moment to transition from the outside world into the store environment. This space helps reduce stress and makes customers feel more comfortable and ready to shop.
Additionally, the use of black shelves to highlight products is a strategic design choice. Black shelving creates a striking contrast, drawing attention to the merchandise and making it easier for customers to find and appreciate the products on display. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the store but also improves the overall shopping experience by making navigation intuitive and visually appealing.
