ith the 22nd Anniversary of the Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) happening July 12th – 18th, this year’s schedule includes some of the best short and feature-length independent films from around the world, which will be shown at the historic Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Avenue, Bellmore, NY 11710)!

LIIFE is the premiere filmmaker community on Long Island, sponsored by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation (LIFTF), the County of Nassau, Gold Coast Studios, The Long Island Railroad, Hamptons TV and the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency, which shows over 160 short and feature-length films of every genre. The expo offers networking opportunities, a 350 seat historic theater, press

r. Douglas Livingston of North Bellmore, New York has been appointed Chief of Podiatry at Glen Cove Hospital of Northwell Health, Inc. In addition to being Chief of Podiatry, Dr. Douglas Livingston trains the podiatric surgical residents at the hospital. Dr. Livingston maintains his private podiatric medical and surgical practice at Livingston Foot Care Specialists, 1685 Newbridge Road, North Bellmore where he has been in practice since 1999.

From "Safe Spaces" (Gregory Wilson) and media opportunities, a convenient filmmakers lounge, and several discussion panels with topics ranging from distribution, to scriptwriting, to legal music, and a filmmaker panel/breakfast.

Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation Celebrates Students at 40th Anniversary Luncheon

By Michelle Gagnon Since the 1978-1979 school year, amazingly gifted and talented students from the schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been chosen to perform their musical, theatrical, and visually artistic talents at the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation’s Annual Luncheon.

The Foundation knows and recognizes the importance of the Arts in the many aspects of our everyday lives. There has been compelling evidence that there are significant and social benefits connected to students participating in the Arts. The Cultural Arts Foundation, (a 501 (c)(3) not-for profit organization), is committed to sharing the talents of the District’s students at the Annual Awards Luncheon.

Celebrating this year’s 40th Anniversary Luncheon on May 23rd at the Coral House, 28 students performed and/or exhibited their talents and creations.

The selection process begins with students in 8th and 12th grades from Grand Avenue MS, Merrick Avenue MS, Calhoun HS, Kennedy HS and Mepham HS being nominated by their teachers from the Visual Arts (Painting, Photography, Mixed Media, Welding, Sculpture, Architecture) and the Performing Arts (Vocal Music, Drama, Instrumental Band, Orchestra). Auditions are then held in March. The Adjudicating Committee, comprised of arts oriented community members of the Bellmores and Merricks, as well as music, and art teachers, has the very difficult decision of selecting one student from each of the Visual Arts and Performing Arts categories.

All who attend the Spring Awards Luncheon thoroughly enjoy all the music and art presentations by the District’s incredibly talented students.

The Foundation would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to: Mr. John DeTommaso, Superintendent of Schools, Ms. Cheryl Fontana, Director of Fine & Performing Arts, School Administrators, Faculty, Staff, PTAS, Judges, Parents/Guardians and wonderful students for their time, support, participation and dedication to the Arts.

We come together to acknowledge the class of 2019, their accomplishments in all areas of school life…academically, artistically, athletically and as young adults who will help make the world a better place. We come together to wish them well in all their future endeavors as they leave the CHSD for new paths that they will travel. We come together to let them know how proud we are of them, as individuals and as the unforgettable Class of 2019.

Kiwanis Club of Merrick 52nd Annual Student Recognition Night

he Kiwanis Club of Merrick honored one graduating senior from each of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD schools at the Club’s 52nd annual Student Recognition Night. Each of the students, selected by their respective principal, was chosen on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular and community service activities, and outstanding character.

This year’s recipients were: Matthew Alexander (Meadowbrook Alternative Program – MAP), Caroline Casella (Sanford H. Calhoun), Ali Cheema (Wellington C. Mepham) and Sidra Naheed (John F. Kennedy).

At the dinner, the honorees were introduced by the principals, who described and praised the achievements and accomplishments that led to their selection for this prestigious award.

In their acceptance remarks, the students shared what their high school careers have meant to them, beyond the academics that will take them on to college next fall.

Kiwanis member Nancy Kaplan, a CHSD school board trustee, spoke on behalf of Superintendent John DeTomasso, who was unable to attend. She offered a heartfelt and insightful assessment into what makes a school – and a
