assau County Executive Laura Curran’s Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation released its final report regarding the potential impacts associated with the legalization and sale of recreational cannabis in New York State. The report identified numerous potential public safety and public health concerns that need to be addressed well before Nassau County could begin to participate in a legalized cannabis market. As such, the task force recommends that if the New York State Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act is passed in its current form, that Nassau County opt out of all cannabis-related commercial businesses. The full report can be read on line by visiting nassaucountyny.gov “Based on the evidence and input I’ve received from the task force, our key stakeholders and what I’ve heard from residents, I have decided that now is not the time for the legalized sale of marijuana in Nassau County,” said County Executive Laura Curran. “What I heard from our law enforcement, our school and education professionals, health officials, and our towns and villages was clear – this isn’t something we’re ready to implement.” “Our task force came to one important conclusion: At the height of a public health crisis, in which more than 160,000 Americans are losing their lives annually to drug and alcohol use, now is not the time for Nassau County to allow for legalized cultivation, sale, distribution or marketing of recreational cannabis products,” Legislator Josh Lafazan said. “I applaud County Executive Curran for her forward-thinking leadership on this issue, and thank Commissioner Ryder for the leadership he exhibited as the cochair of this important task force.” “Months ago, the County Executive asked me to be part of a task force on the possibility of legalized recreational marijuana, said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. “As Commissioner of Police, I had many concerns, as I was and still am strongly opposed to its legalization. At the County Executive’s request, I was asked to work with the task force to prepare a fair and impartial report, and as professionals we did just that. The committee worked exhaustedly prepar-

ing the data which included attending town hall meetings and the report shows both the negative and positive impacts on legalization. Due to the overwhelming amount of negative impact at this time, we are recommending to the County Executive that we opt out.” On January 10, 2019, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced the formation of the Nassau County Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation in response to pending state legislation regarding the legalization and sale of recreational cannabis in New York. The task force was charged with examining the prospective impacts the legalization of cannabis may have on the County’s public safety, public health, business development, and communities. Co-chaired by Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Legislator Joshua Lafazan, the Nassau County Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation was comprised of eight subcommittees which included: public safety, legislation and regulation, public health, treatment and recovery, education and prevention, taxation and finance, community impact, and small business impact. As such, each subcommittee submitted an impact report for their respective area of study. • The Nassau County Task Force on Marijuana Legalization & Regulation Members • Patrick Ryder, Nassau County Police Commissioner (Co-Chair) (Public Safety) • Josh Lafazan, Nassau County Legislator (Co-Chair) (Legislation and Regulation) • Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, Department of Health Commissioner (Public Health) • Francesca Carlow, President of the Nassau County Chambers of Commerce (SmallBusiness Impact) • Giselle Campbell-Ham, Assistant Principal of Freeport High School (Education andPrevention) • Ralph Ekstrand, Mayor of Farmingdale (Taxation and Finance) • Bishop Lionel Harvey, First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury (Community Impact) • Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President of Family and Children’s Association (Treatment)

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Spring 2019 | Vol.6 No.4

Sprucing Up for Springtime

By Marc Bromberg

S

pring is the perfect time to take a good look at your home, assess for damages and create a wish list of improvements. Start at the curb and look around the entire house. Has time changed your view on the curb appeal of your home? Painting the exterior can do wonders for renewing pride in your home and making it beautiful once more. When picking colors, consider the elements that will remain constant such as stone work or brick and then select complimenary colors to match. Accent features of the house by using different colors for the body, trim and the shutters. Consider expressing your personality and make a bold statement with a brightly painted front door. Choose complimentary colors that coordinate and contrast with the scheme which will add character and make your home stand out. Once inside, starting with your foyer, think of how you want to welcome people into your home. Light colors keep entryways light and airy and neutrals provide seamless color flow into a room. From cre-

the heat that heats your home.

ating a tranquil to a dramatic look, a fresh coat of paint can go a long way in restoring your appreciation for the beauty in your home.

AVOID STRUCTURAL DAMAGE

SELECTING PAINT

Use a pair of binoculars to take a close look at the upper floors for damage caused by the winter elements. Water, mold and mildew of poorly painted or exposed wood can cause sofening and decay, which may result in structural damage. Professionally painted and stained woods prevent termites from making their way into your home. So, beauty is not the only benefit of painting. Wood decks take a hard hit during the winter. Inspecting and keeping up with painting or staining can save on costly repairs like replacing deck boards. Check around the skylights and look at the interior ceiling for water damage. You will notice this damage as round tan-colored stains on your ceiling or dried drip marks running down the skylight. Because hot air rises, a white ceiling can begin to look tired and grey around the corners from

Choosing interior paints go beyond color. You will be happier with your selection if you follow some simple paint finish guidelines. If you are painting a kitchen or bathroom, select a washable matte finish for the walls. For an elegant look in the living room, dining room or bedroom a flat finish is the best selection. Regardless of the room you are painting, semi-gloss is best for doors and trim because it is both washable and shiny. Painting is one of the least expensive ways to add vibrancy and reinvigorate the beauty of your home. You will be amazed how a fresh coat of paint can affect your mood, confidence and comfort. A simple shade of paint can turn any room in your home into an extraordinary space that looks current and inviting. A knowledgeable painter can help you select the best color combinations, but it

you want to get a head start on selecting colors, the local paint store is a good place to begin. Paint manufacturer brochures have color combination recommendations for traditional, contemporary and modern style homes to help narrow and define the best color palette choices. Your home is a valuable investment that should be enjoyed every day. Capturing the spirit of spring with a fresh coat of paint goes a long way in preserving and ejoying your home for many years to come. Live Music And All Things Design At Breasties Fundraiser F BY Randi Satnick

or over twenty-five years Bellmore based Interior Designer, Patricia Salcedo, has been invited into people’s homes with an eye to transform their space. The design process is often a catalyst for the development of long-standing relationships between designer and clientele. “As a woman working and living on Long Island,” Patricia explains, “I am often reminded that breast cancer touches the lives of too many in our area.” So, Salcedo, who has always been motivated to affect positive change and has hosted many fundraisers in her past, intends to unveil her new interior design showroom space (within Republic Lighting of Bellmore) by once again, “helping women move mountains.” The phrase is the tag line of the not-for-profit organization, The Breasties; a group which creates support networks of women from all over and of

all ages who are affected by cancer. The III View Design showroom opening and Breasties fundraiser, on Wednesday May 8th at 5:30pm, will feature high-end skincare/make-up, women’s casual clothing, a fashion show by Runway Couture, and raffle prizes. Twenty-three-year-old Breastie, Bianca Muniz: singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, survivor of ovarian cancer and now, breast cancer warrior will perform at the III View Design event. The Breasties support cancer warriors like Bianca. The organization was founded by four young women, all who were affected by reproductive or breast cancer in some way at an early age. The group spreads the message that women aren’t alone; that young women stricken with a cancer battle have others with whom to share their somewhat unique experience. Although a small percentage of women stricken with

breast cancer are below the age of forty, many young women with symptoms ignore warning signs. The Breasties address issues of sexuality, treatment and reproduction which are different than those of more mature women. However, as they say, “Anyone can be a Breastie,” including previvors, warriors and caregivers. Salcedo followed Bianca’s musical rise as well as her health battles and feels fortunate to be able to use her newly renovated design showroom to spread awareness and raise funds to support women and caregivers affected by cancer. “Can any of us say that we haven’t been touched by breast cancer in some way?”

Salcedo asks. Attendance at the event is welcome on Wednesday, May 8th beginning at 5:30pm. Set right before Mother’s Day, the event is a wonderful opportunity to procure gifts and support women’s health and wellness. Please contact the showroom for more information. RECIPES [CONT. FROM PAGE 14]

In a large bowl or 6 quart mixer (which is what I use), pour boiling water over butter. Add salt and sugar and stir well. When butter is melted, mix in additional hot water. Stir in evaporated milk. Slowly add flour and yeast. Turn out onto floured board and knead or use the dough hook on your mixer, knead for about 10 minutes. Next, grease a large bowl thoroughly, put the dough in it and turn it over so the surface will be well greased to prevent sticking. Cover, let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30-45 minutes. Dump onto well floured surface. Divide into thirds and each third into 12 equal pieces to form into dinner-size rolls. Let rise until doubled. Just before popping them into the oven I give the tops a good brushing of egg/water wash.Bake 25-35 minutes at 375° until the tops are browned nicely. Makes 36 large rolls.

Combine all ingredients except ham in your blender and pulse until well blended. Reserve one cup of glaze.
Place ham in crock pot, flat side down. Slowly pour glaze over ham, making sure to get some between each spiral slice. Lift ham to get glaze underneath as well.
Cook on low for 2 hours. Pour remaining glaze over ham and continue cooking on low for an additional 1 to 2 hours.
Enjoy!

Spring into Fitness

By Bobbie Arnel

ave you been binging on ice cream every night, and hiding your body under bulky sweaters all winter? Remember that new years resolution you made not that long ago that this would be the year you FINALLY get in shape? Spring is here and summer is coming. It’s time to get serious! Perhaps you already go to a gym regularly. If so, you probably do the same cardio and strength machines on every visit. It’s good to change up your workout in order to continue to see results. Maybe you don’t go to a gym because you are self-conscious about being overweight. Spring is the perfect time to recharge your motivation to exercise, change your routine, and take your workout outdoors. Here are some suggestions for how to get in shape in time for summer. 1) Go bicycling outdoors, a great activity for your whole family. Long Island has some fabulous, beautiful bike trails. Try the Massapequa Preserve/Bethpage Trail, and the path that goes along the Wantagh Parkway, which begins at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, and goes all the way to Tobay Beach 2) Throw and catch a softball or kick a soccer ball with your kids in a local park

3) Hit some tennis balls at a tennis court at one of our numerous local Long Island parks; even if you and/or your kids are not very good tennis players, chasing after the errant balls will get you in shape 4) Take a walk in your neighborhood with or without a dog, and include the entire family; you can even walk to a yogurt or smoothie shop to reward yourself 5) Find a buddy with similar goals, and set up a friendly contest to track your steps on a Fitbit or fitness application on your phone. Bottom line, working out should be fun. Even if you take a spin class regularly at the gym now, try switching to a regular bicycle outside. Or if you go on a treadmill at home or at the gym several times a week, take a walk in the beautiful outdoors instead. Change up your workouts to keep them fresh, fun and effective. If you like an activity, you are much more likely to do it, and it won’t FEEL like exercise! And all of the above suggested activities are free—you DO NOT have to go to a gym to get fit and healthy. Get outside, and JUST MOVE!! Bobbie Arnel has been an ACE certified personal trainer in Merrick since 1993. bfit516@aol.com.
