Merrick Collision To Open Second location in Bellmore During an interview with Sue, Ken and Joe Guarniere, owners of Merrick Collision at 9 Kees Place, Merrick, about their anticipated second location on Bellmore’s Broadway, a maintenance driver for the Merrick School District came in and told Joe his vehicle had just been struck by a delivery truck and needed an estimate. The friendly exchange revealed the driver clearly knew the Guarnieres, who have run the collision shop for 40 years and serviced thousands of Merrick residents and businesses with reassembling smashed, crunched, bent and disjointed vehicles. Conversation turned to the chiseled Chevy Camaro Iroc Ken had worked on … at some point in the past. “The district requires free estimates,” the driver then told Your NewsMag. Within a few minutes Joe came back in, worked out an estimate, and began scheduling a time when the driver could come in to have the vehicle’s body repaired. Such was another typical day in the life of the award-winning collision shop that

home, as they built a successful business in Merrick. They plan to remain at the Merrick location into the foreseeable future. Sue wished to thank all the patrons in Merrick who have patronized the collision repair shop, saying “ Merrick is a great place to work, the residents and customers are very supportive and have helped us to build a solid business with their support.”

NEEDED WORK

Merrick Collision's second home at 36 Broadway, Bellmore will soon open a second shop at 36 Broadway in Bellmore, sight of an old evangelical church that occupied the space, next to the now-closed Banner transmission shop. Merrick Collision plans to grow the family business. Ken and Sue have five children, where Joe and Brittany current-

ly work at the shop. At some point their other children Lauren, Danielle and Kenny may want to join them. With these children comes grandchildren that may be interested in the family business, as well. The Guarnieres have leased the 8800 square-foot shop in Merrick they call

Having owned the 6400 square-foot Bellmore location since November 2013, Ken said they have only recently been able to begin work on the inside to build it to “collision repair” specifications. Ken said he is still getting a feel for the space they will use, and where stations, fire sprinklers and other equipment will be placed. New to the Bellmore shop is a spray paint and bake booth requiring the base be built into the floor, which will speed the time in getting the car or truck back [CONT. ON PAGE 17]

And the New Sign Says …

The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores has installed a new BELLMORE VILLAGE sign on the LIRR train trestle at Bedford Avenue. The sign replaces a nearly 20 year-old sign that welcomed visitors into a new downtown revitalization concept first developed by Gary Hudes and other Bellmore leaders of the time. In the late 1990s Hudes, owner of Gennaro Jewelers and then-president of the chamber, spearheaded a downtown revitalization along Bedford Avenue in which part of revitalization included placing a green sign with gold lettering on the trestle above Bedford Avenue saying

“BELLMORE VILLAGE - a stroll down memory lane.” In keeping with the charm intended, the revitalization also included old-fashioned street posts and music playing for shoppers as they walked through the town. Now, after nearly 20 years the once-beautiful Bellmore Village sign needs replacing. Now peeling and faded, the sign no longer matches the charm and vibrancy of the town. The chamber board decided to replace the sign, changing the color from green to burgundy, which matches the chamber logo and stands out better for all to see. Sign Up Now, the original company that created the old green sign, was once again selected as the best option for installing the new sign. Chamber President James Spohrer. along with the Executive Board and Martha Verdi (long-time chamber member and Bellmore Street Festival coordinator) worked to have the new sign installed along with the help and support of the LIRR, Nassau County Police Department and Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney. The installation was an exciting two-day process shared by all who came to see the removal and installation of the beautiful new BELLMORE VILLAGE sign. The chamber raises funds from events such as the annual family street festival and Friday Night Car Show, which go to sponsor holiday celebrations and earmark funds towards improvements to support the success of commerce in the Bellmore communities.

Bellmore Historical Train House being Restored The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores is restoring the historic Long Island Rail Road ticket booth, which stands on Pettit Avenue across from the Bellmore firehouse. It was originally maintained by the Historical Society of the Bellmores, which dissolved on December 31, 2014. The “Train House” as the chamber calls it, was acquired from the Historical Society when exclusive use was granted to the chamber by the Town of Hempstead on January 30, 2015. After a great deal of research and evaluation, it was decided that the train house structure could be restored. The

chamber plans to restore this historical structure of Bellmore history for future use.

Landmarks Commission Votes to Landmark St. Matthias Church in North Bellmore Commissioners of the Town of Hempstead’s Landmarks Commission voted 5-0, with one abstention, to recommend to the Hempstead Town Board that the St. Matthias Episcopal Church at 2856 Jerusalem Avenue at the corner of Oakfield Avenue be landmarked for its cultural and historical value to the community. Commissioner Josh Soren abstained, as he was the one who formally filed the application for landmark status. The vote came after an articulate defense from the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island’s Rev. Andrew Dundraidge, who told the commissioners that he is in charge of the real estate of 135 churches within the diocese in Brooklyn, Nassau, Queens and Suffolk. A church is not solely defined by the building it is in, he first told the commissioners, “It’s the worshipping congregation and community within the church that makes it a viable church.” He said that since the 1960s the St. Matthias congregation has struggled to maintain a consistent 25 congregants, a criterion of the diocese to make the congregation a viable one that maintains the thrust of the church through spiritual and community activities. He also challenged the historical underpinnings of the 114 year-old church, saying it was the second church in the community for worshippers during that time, and not the original one. He added that the diocese attempted to consolidate the congregation with the congregation of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Bellmore Avenue, referring to the recent consolidation of the Episcopal Church in East Meadow with St. Marks, and changing the congregation’s name to St. Francis. He said the St. Matthias congregation resisted the consolidation. While the diocese has sold eight churches in recent years, he maintained the revenues gener-

ated were for promotion of other charitable church events and activities within the communities it serves. “We would hope to sell the property to another church,” he said. He said that the Rev. Lawton Bryant is not an ordained Episcopal minister, and therefore his congregation was not a viable Episcopal congregation. He concluded to the commissioners that landmarking the church would diminish the ability of the diocese to carry out its ministries, and asked them to provide the Commission’s standards for landmarking the property should the commissioners choose to landmark it.

Interim Landmarks Commissioner Paul D. Van Wie then read aloud three criteria to which the Commission adhers to: The architectural value of the structure; the historical value; and the cultural value. He said there has to be some significance to the design of the structure that makes it meaningful, that historical value does not mean it needs to be an old structure, and that the structure has a “unique” chemistry and significance within the community. The Commissioners then voted 5-0 to recommend landmark status of St. Matthias Church to the Hempstead Town Board, for further discussion and clarification with the town board at a meeting in the future.

shanah, the Jewish new year 5779, celebrates the earth’s creation looking forward to peace, prosperity and blessings. A week later the high holidays reach a crescendo with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. High Holidays conclude with the festive holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, which bring the annual fall Jewish holiday season to a joyous conclusion. One of Bellmore’s true heroes, Emilio Manzo, has passed on. Emilio spent his adult life volunteering in the community and collecting Toys for Tots, and was an active member and president of the Community Wellness Council. Many of you may remember seeing Emilio at the street fair in Bellmore as he rode the chamber golf cart checking to make sure all is well at the fair. Just one of the many things Emilio was known to do as a Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores board member. Emilio was a wonderful human being who will be deeply missed. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. We can never forget those whose lives were lost in the tragic 9-11 terrorist attack. Several local residents lives were cut short on this day of infamy, including many of whom rushed into harm’s way to save countless others, only to pay with the ultimate sacrifice themselves. The names of the men and women from the Bellmores and the Merricks that lost their lives as a result of the 9-11 attack are listed below. They will never be forgotten. To all, a wish for a wonderful year filled with good health, peace and happiness. Shanah Tovah

On the eve of Sunday, September 9th, we will be ushering in the holiday of Rosh Hashana, traditionally known as the Jewish New Year. On the eve of September 19th, we will usher in Yom Kippur - the day of atonement. From the onset of our history, Jewish women and girls have been given the special gift of bringing light and warmth into the home and into the world by kindling Shabbat and festival candles. Light the traditional candles on the eve of Rosh Hashana: Sunday, September 9th at 6:55 pm and again, on Monday, September 10th after 7:53 pm (from a pre-existing flame). Also light the candles on the eve of Yom Kippur-September 19th at 6:40 pm. And keep the flame alive by lighting candles each Friday evening at the appropriate time and with the proper blessing. For a free candle lighting kit and calendar of lighting times for the entire year, contact Chabad at 516-833-3057 or email programs@chabadjewishlife.org.

She also remarked that “Alex was in a car accident five-and-a-half years ago, he's a 2008 Calhoun graduate and Merrick resident. Proud Member of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores.

Emilio Manzo lived in Bellmore for most of his life. He represented Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and worked with All Island Taxi service located in the heart of Bellmore Village for many years. In Emilio’s situation, it was not only that he knew Bellmore well, Bellmore knew him well. Emilio was truly a mainstay in the community and the Bellmores is a better place for having had him involved. He served for many years as the president of the Community Wellness Council of Bellmore/Merrick. In addition, Emilio served on the chamber Board of Directors for over 25 years. In that time, he was involved with many of the town’s committees while working on various fundraiser events. Emilio was always on board with going that extra step. After Superstorm Sandy, Emilio helped to collect and deliver food and supplies to all the emergency centers. One of Emilio’s true passions was his participation in the Toys for Tots Annual Drive program with the Marine Corps. He was successfully able to keep much of the toys collected right here in the Bellmores. Emilio always worked behind the

Emilio Manzo at the Bellmore fair scenes doing all the work that too many times went unnoticed. Emilio worked on the festival committee for the past 23 years, where he was one of the lead persons behind the scenes. Emilio’s dedication, perseverance and passion are clearly a part of the driving forces to the chamber’s success. Emilio spent a good percentage of his time checking with the Bellmore businesses to make sure all was well. He was well loved and respected by all who were lucky to know him. He will be forever missed.

to the customer. The new efficiencies of the spray booth allowed the Guarnieres to reduce the square footage of the new Bellmore property, and add up to 40 outside parking spots to park cars until they are ready to be repaired. “We have to keep most of the cars in our shop now, those under repair and those needing to be repaired,” Ken said, often creating a crowded condition within the shop. To make sure the spray and bake booth is utilized to its fullest, Ken said it is important to prepare the body properly to receive the paint – and the baking. “Molded materials [for bumpers, plastic shields, etc.] give off a residue that needs to be washed and sanded thoroughly” so the paint will stick properly, and bake on properly.

FINE DETAILS

Auto body workers focus on fine details such tight crevasses and other hardto-see spots, and dry them and sand them, essential if the body shop doesn’t want to have the car returned in the future with peeling paint, because the part wasn’t prepared for painting properly.

Adding to the deadline environment of their body repair shop in Merrick, Joe said, “The shop runs on a cycle time according to the insurance companies.” When a car is in the shop for repairs, insurers often pay for rental cars, and they wish to see the affected cars repaired as quickly as possible.” The time it takes for a car to have the damage inspected and assessed, and then correct parts ordered is about 24 hours, Joe added. Joe adds that, unlike during his father’s time spent working on bashing out dents and straightening fenders, “cars all have computers now, so we have to diagnose those computers” to tell workers if there is any damage to sensors in and around the car, in addition to the body damage. “We computer-diagnose the cars once they come in, and after they have been repaired,” he says. Meanwhile, as if in response to his son’s prowess toward technology, Ken showed Your NewsMag the hot rod he rebuilt for Brian Setzer, Long Island guitarist from Massapequa who started the Stray Cats, and later his own orchestra. Similar Super Sport models from the ‘60s and ’70s also dot the office walls.

Dr. David H. Krinsky, D.M.D, has relocated his Centre Avenue dental office as of May and merged with The Geller Dental Group P.C., owned by Dr. Mark Geller and his son Dr. Randy Geller, located at 2140 Bellmore Ave in Bellmore. Both offices are the oldest family owned and operated dental practices in Bellmore. The practices have “roots” going back to the 1950s. Dr. Krinsky took over from his father, Dr. Malvin Krinsky, in 1980. Dr. Mark Geller took over his practice in 1973 from Dr. Joel Ehrens. Dr. Randy Geller joined his father

in 2000. The merger creates a single multi-specialty and general dental facility, according to both owners. The Geller Dental Group P.C. has specialists in oral surgery, periodontics and pediatric dentistry, and utilizes cutting-edge technology, including cone beam (3D) radiology, digital scanning of the mouth, and laser periodontal treatment. It is a full- service practice that does nearly all dental procedures at the Bellmore Avenue location. This includes cosmetic and implant dentistry, as well as expertise in “teeth in a day” protocol.

Long Island Blood Banks Need Blood Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined with Nassau County Health Department Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, Karen Muscolino of Long Island Services, representatives from the New York Blood Center, and blood donors to urge residents to donate blood and replenish critically low blood supplies. “Our local hospitals are currently facing a blood emergency.” said County Executive Curran. “We want to ensure all patients have access to the life-saving blood they need. Blood supplies have dropped down to a four-day reserve, well below the seven-day minimum.” It takes one hour to donate blood, which cannot be manufactured, and a single donation can be used to save multiple lives. Nearly 2000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. About one in seven hospital admissions requires a blood transfusion, and with a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished. Those in need can include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chron-

ically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more. “New Yorkers can donate blood at many locations throughout Nassau County, including the Rockville Centre Donor Center” said County Executive Curran. “During the summer months, blood centers often must focus on building up the community's blood supply.” “Blood supplies are at critically low levels,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Donor Recruitment for New York Blood Center. “We need everyone to do what they can to help replenish supplies, whether than means spreading the word, hosting a drive, or taking the time to donate. One hour of your time can help save a life.” The New York Blood Center is one of the largest independent, community-based blood centers in the world. NYBC, along with its partners across the country, serve local communities of more than 45 million people. They also provide a wide array of vital transfusion-related medical services and pioneer research in fields like Hepatitis B.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM PAINFUL BUNIONS? BY Dr. Leon Livingston, Dr. Douglas Livingston and their Associates at Livingston Foot Care Specialists

Now there’s a new technologically advanced surgical procedure that will allow you to walk immediately after the procedure, with minimal down time, no crutches, no cast and early return to work. The surgeons at Livingston Foot Care Specialists have extensive training and experience in this technologically advanced procedure. A bunion is a poorly aligned big toe joint. The big toe may point toward the second toe causing a bump on the outside edge of the toe. This poorly aligned joint will lead to many complications including arthritis including inflammatory or degenerative forms, causing the protective cartilage that covers your big toe joint to deteriorate. This is why it is so important to treat your bunion deformity. Bunions are often caused by an inherited foot type, foot injuries, and certain deformities and can be exacerbated by high heels or ill-fitting shoes. This may lead to swelling, redness, or soreness around the big toe joint, thickening of the skin at the base of the big toe, corns or calluses, pain, and restricted movement of the big toe. By pushing the big toe inward, a bunion can squeeze your other toes into abnormal positions.

Good Foot Health is Essential to Maintaining Good Physical Health Dr. Douglas Livingston Dr. Leon Livingston Dr. Brandon Naing Dr. Alison Graziano Dr. Merlan Ellis Dr. Edward D' Amico

Over time, this crowding can lead to contractures of the other toes known as hammertoes. A bunion may be treated conservatively with such modalities as utilizing wider shoes with a higher toe box, paddings, strappings, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, custom molded foot orthotics, and injection therapy, which can help alleviate the symptoms associated with a bunion. If these conservative modalities fail to resolve the symptoms then surgical management is an option and the new technology available today can fix this condition with minimal down time and early return to work. The Board Certified podiatrists at Livingston Foot Care Specialists treat all foot conditions from the simple corn to total reconstructive foot surgery. Call Livingston Foot Care Specialists located at 1685 Newbridge Road, North Bellmore 516.826.0103.

Do you suffer from heel pain? Do you have painful bunions? Do you have painful hammertoes? Do you have unsightly toe nails? Our Doctors Can Help You!
