Comm Tower Progresses for BFD’s Station House No. 2

T

he Bellmore Fire District is presently in discussions with Mayday Communications to configure an 85-foot communications tower that would be placed on the property of the Bellmore Fire Department’s Station House No. 2 on Bellmore Avenue and Beech Avenue in south Bellmore.

Two public meetings at the station house held in November 2017 and early winter of this year revealed the station house’s plan to improve its overall communications within its operations and to provide better communications among other station houses in the Bellmore Fire Department.

Jordan Leibner, vice-president of station house no. 2 at 2670 Bellmore Avenue, told Your NewsMag recently that the new tower would be designed to “improve overall communications within the station house, at no cost to taxpayers.”

by Mayday, told Your NewsMag that technicians from Mayday Communications of Farmingdale were working closely with the

Bellmore Fire District to work out communications parameters in areas such as screen analytics, two-way radio recordings, cabinetry and safety, as examples.

He said the construction of the tower would be determined by the configuration or suite of communications the station house needs to improve its communications. “Evaluations are still taking place in determining the type of antenna” needed for the communications required, he said.

“Their communications had become inadequate” for the increased need to fully and adequately serve the community it responds to, Coughlin said of the reason for the new communications tower.

Station House No. 2 Board of Trustee Jay Podolsky told Your NewsMag that Superstorm Sandy taught the fire departments within the fire district valuable lessons in the need for having proper and working communications. The volume of the emergencies station house no. 2 encountered in south Bellmore coupled with communications equipment in use during that time greatly slowed the department’s abilities to respond quickly to myriad distress calls, though respond they did.

Your NewsMag witnessed flooding of Merrick Road east of Bellmore Avenue by Mill Pond at high tide as Superstorm Sandy came ashore, the area eerily dark as the silence was broken by the continual wail of fire engine sirens all evening in the south Bellmore area.

Podolsky further explained the need for the communications tower as being a “proactive” measure to ensure the station house – and the fire department – features the latest communications equipment to enable a quick and decisive response in the face of a changing climate and caution of more severe storms in the future.

Coughlin said the tower may encourage private radio transmission companies in the future to lease the pole, as a means to provide more complete coverage of the south Bellmore area.

He noted that while early protests of such towers centered on the effects of radio frequency waves that were thought to be harmful, the federal government in 1996 issued new guidelines suggesting these protests were unproven by existing research, and should not be considered by governing agencies when deciding to build towers.

He added that the Town of Hempstead re-

wrote ordinances that regulated the placement of smaller RF boxes hung on telephone poles in neighborhoods designed to improve cell phone coverage.

“Because of these town ordinances, any private radio transmission company would be encouraged to lease space” on the tower to improve its coverage, Coughlin said.

Podolsky would say only that the tower was not being built for that purpose, but if such companies approached the station house and department in the future, it could be considered. Eileen Casazza, an official with the facebook group Bellmore Moms and Dads, said in an email to Your NewsMag that some Bellmore firefighters live in the area and may welcome better commercial cell phone coverage from private contractors using the tower.

Because fire departments are non-profit organizations, they would be able to recirculate any revenue generated from private companies using their poles back into their operations.

Public discussions of the tower will begin once The Town of Hempstead zoning Board of Appeals receives the request from Elite Towers to build the structure.

THE ARTS Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation Holds 39th Annual Awards Luncheon

T

he 39th Annual Cultural Arts Awards Luncheon of the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation was held last month at the Long Island Marriott.

Since the 1978-79 school year, exceptionally talented students from the five schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been chosen to perform musically, dramatically and/or to showcase their artistic and photographic creations.

As in the past, auditions were held at each of the district’s five schools, and the adjudicators – members of the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation, Artsoriented members of the community, and several faculty members – considered each candidate’s performance and/or display.

Those students who were selected performed and/or exhibited, while the attendees – students, family members, friends, teachers, administrators – enjoyed the entertainment and the luncheon.

Everyone left the decorated dining room feeling energized by the creativity that permeated the air.

Meet the valedictorians and salutatorians and find out their plans for a bright future.

During senior recognition night many seniors were honored for their efforts, achievements and citizenship. The school administrators take a great deal of time and effort to match the qualities of the deserving students to the spirit that each generous scholarship donor represents.

Superintendents of schools reflect on their experiences with graduating seniors or students moving up, and offer their messages of congratulations and best wishes.

The opportunities for expressing creativity are plentiful! The Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation celebrates the arts each year at an awards luncheon that showcases talented students from each of the five schools in the Central High School district who were selected to share their artistic and musical talents.

Meet Sal Salerno, the On Tour program director at Calhoun High School. Student Jackson Katz interviews Mr. Salerno, who shares his experiences that brought him to our district as well as the process and benefits of this creative and exciting program.

MEET THE VALEDICTORIANS AND SALUTATORIANS CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL

KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL

VALEDICTORIAN: JOY MA

VALEDICTORIAN: DYLAN JUDD

On Valedictorian Joy Ma’s intention to attend Yale University in the fall with a laser-like focus on molecular, developmental and cellular biology as a pre-med track, her activities at Calhoun also read like a Who’s Who in Student Achievements: She ranked fourth in the nation in fencing, and was a silver medalist at the 2016 and 2018 Junior Olympics, and 2017 Cadet Pan American Champion in Cuba; researched at Cornell University; was a pianist for Calhoun’s Jazz Band; was first flutist for Nassau Suffolk Wind Symphony; and played second singles for Calhoun Varsity’s Badminton team.

Her honors, awards and societies include being a National Merit Scholarship Finalist; the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation Award; and being a member of the English, Social Studies, Math, Science, Music, Italian and National Honor Societies.

Among the many people she admires and credits for her young success so far include “My parents, for supporting me in everything I do in every way they can; my fencing coach, Vladimir Gofman, who unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago but was one of the main reasons I am the fencer and person that I am today; and science/ASR teacher Jennifer Pefanis, for creating a home away from home at school.”

She says to incoming seniors to “Take time to enjoy senior year! Whether or not you loved your high school experience, you don’t realize that you’re going to miss it until you’re saying goodbye. Appreciate the people who have helped to shape your life for the past four years, perhaps even longer.”

She caps that with a most practical observation: “And get started on college applications over the summer/as early as possible!”

Saying he is undecided on what to study while attending Weslyan University in the fall, though nevertheless “interested in environmental science, chemistry and statistics,” Valedictorian Dylan Judd paid homage to all his many Kennedy teachers for helping him to understand the world around him, which has helped to shape the views he currently holds though two in particular stood out.

“That being said, there are two teachers I would like to shout out: my chemistry teacher Helmut Schleith and my 10th grade English teacher Jennifer Sapir. You two have been such an influence on my life and have supported me in my pursuit for higher education, pushing me to new limits that I didn’t even know were possible.”

Regarding his achievements in school and outside school, he said “I am really proud of my determination to do my best in the classroom even while competing in two varsity sports and travel baseball year ‘round. I have had to make sacrifices to keep my grades and my play at a high level, but it was all worth it. I wouldn’t change my life one bit, and I am so happy that I was able to find a proper balance among sports, school, and life in general.”

His honors, awards and society memberships include the Varsity Coach’s Award (2x), New York State Sportsmanship Award (Volleyball), 3x County Champion (Volleyball), 2017 Long Island Champion (Volleyball), 2017 State Finalist (Volleyball), 2016 County Finals Runner Up (Baseball), Cougar Pride Award, Math Honor Society, New York State Science Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society.

His advice to incoming seniors includes congratulations on “finishing junior year!”

He said that “After months of 3 a.m. nights doing homework and early mornings of Driver’s Ed, you can finally catch up on that precious sleep you have missed. Senior year is a transitional year, one where you begin a new chapter of your life.”

“You are leaving friendships and family behind as you move forward in life. So, I wish you all to enjoy every moment you

SALUTATORIAN: AMELIA SEABOLD

On a fast track to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study biology, Salutatorian Amelia Seabold offers a special thanks to Jennifer Pefanis, her research advisor who helped her tremendously throughout the past three years in research and in life, and Dominic Ciavatta, “my mentor at University of North Carolina.”

It was there, she said, she wrote the thesis on molecular research on ANCA Vasculitis at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill. Other awards, memberships and accolades include the Regeneron STS 2018 Research Report Badge, the Regeneron STS 2018 Student Initiative Badge, an AP Scholar with Distinction, first place at Rube Goldberg Competition, Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Semifinalist and membership in the National, Science, Social Studies, English, Tri-M Music, Italian and Math Honors Societies.

She was a member of the Model United Nations as its Secretary General, captain of EMSC travel soccer, on the varsity soccer team and in the school’s wind ensemble, also acting as its treasurer.

She advises seniors to not “get too caught up in applications and tests, take a deep breath and take it all in because you only get to experience high school once.”

SALUTATORIAN: DAVID KANTOR

Among Salutatorian David Kantor’s many activities were President and VicePresident of the Key Club, CEO of Virtual Enterprise, executive board member – and euphonium player–of the school’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, a starting doubles player in varsity tennis, a starting defensemen in junior varsity soccer, and a member of both the FBLA (Stock Market) Club and the Math Club.

His awards, honors and activities include being named National Merit Program Commended Student, finalist in the Virtual Enterprise National Business Plan Competition, finalist in the Adelphi Apprentice Challenge, second place in the JFK Science Fair, a weekly volunteer a Sensory Beans working with children with special needs and a tutor for Tutor for a Cure, a cancer charity.

David was clear on whom he wished to thank for his growth and maturity during his high school years. “I would like to thank Jessica Chilton for being such an amazing Key Club mentor over these past four years. Your efforts are seriously not commended enough. You truly inspire me!”

His counsel to incoming seniors is to not focus on building a college resume, but rather to focus on pursuing your academic and extracurricular interests.

“Once you have discovered your interests,” he said, explore them. “Become engaged and immersed in whatever it is that you care about. If you have trouble finding your path, try a wide variety of clubs, classes, etc. Eventually you will find your calling and the rest will work itself out.”

David was also a member of the National Honor Society, the National Science Honor Society, the National Business Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society (mathematics), the World Language Honor Society (for Spanish) and the Tri-M Honor Society ( in music).

David is set to study at Dartmouth College with a major in economics.

MEPHAM HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN: GINA CONNORS

As Senior Class President, Captain of the Track and Cross Country team and a member of the school band, Valedictorian Gina Connors was also recipient of several awards and a member of several societies, including the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Italian Honor Society Secretary, English Honor Society Secretary and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Gina said she is proud to have been a peer tutor. “Using the knowledge I acquired throughout my four years of high school, I was able to help my peers and make a difference in their lives as students, which I take pride in.”

She expressly thanks class advisor Erica WagnerO’Rourke, for all of her advice regarding dealing with the stresses of school and of the future. It was her help and advice, Gina said, that allowed her to be proud of the results of all her hard work instead of being so quick to critique them.

Of her advice to incoming seniors on goals and a viable academic track, she remarked that “Senior year is still hard work. Between college applications and heavy course loads, it is normal to feel stressed— but stress should not take over your life, especially not in your last year of high school.”

She urged upcoming students to work hard at what they enjoy, and excel and be proud of all that they can accomplish. “The school year is not as long as it seems,” she concluded, “so make the most of it. Enjoy what the remainder of the high school experience has to offer.”

Gina will attend the University at Notre Dame, where she will major in chemistry.

SALUTATORIAN: ISABELLE CHAN

To begin, Salutatorian Isabelle Chan wished to thank Jennifer Malone and Dr. David Kommor for “being extraordinary mentors and teachers to me throughout the years.”

As Vice-President of Habitat for Humanity, as a member of the National Honors Society, Math Honors Society, English Honors Society, Science Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society, and of being varsity volleyball captain and a member of varsity track and field, Isabelle commented that “I’m particularly proud of being a Habitat for Humanity volunteer” because of the insight it provided and the ability to contribute “within my community and communities around me. I got to be a part of something greater than myself and I’m extremely grateful for that,” she said.

She is also a Scholar Athlete Recipient, St. John’s Women in Science Award Recipient, Seal of Biliteracy Recipient and National Spanish Exam Bronze Medalist.

In concluding her time at high school, she said “My advice to future students would be to just be you and enjoy the ride. Follow your heart because it will never steer you wrong and wherever you end up you’ll know that that’s where you need to be.”

Isabelle plans to major in biochemistry at Boston College.

She believes one

of her proudest accomplishments at MAP will forever be development of the Brookside Greenhouse. As a high school junior it was a bit unnerving to write a formal grant, she said, but she did so and was awarded with funds to cover the purchase of the greenhouse. The greenhouse was essential in growing root vegetables that provide a fresh-food alternative to support the district-wide Community Cupboard (food bank) in providing fresh food to local families in need.

She thanks Principal Susan Ellinghaus and the amazing faculty at MAP and her parents for her forward trajectory through the alternative program.

Advice to incoming seniors: “School has taught me it’s not about where you

come from, it’s about how far you go.”

Jordan will attend Farmingdale State College come fall with a major focus on bioscience.

SALUTATORIAN: CHAZZ OPPERMAN

With a shout out to the faculty and staff at MAP for their unwavering support, Chazz remarked that after graduation he plans to expand his part-time job into a full-time job to prepare for his future as an entrepreneur. “I would like to have a career in sales and ultimately own my own pet shop,” he said. He will also consider business courses at a local college that could enhance his career.

Chazz was a BMCHSD Student Ambassador and volunteered at Family Project at GAMs for many years. He was on the Honor Roll for his entire senior year.

He tells incoming seniors to “Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you! I wish I’d done it sooner!”

LIIFE Unwinds at the Bellmore Movies July 13-19

ith the 21st Anniversary of the Long Island International Film Expo scheduled from Friday, July 13 through Thursday, July 19, at the historic Bellmore Movies, 222 Pettit Avenue, Bellmore, this year’s film rotation includes among the best short- and feature-length independent films from around the world.

Named one the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine, LIIFE is the premiere independent filmmaker community showcase on Long Island sponsored by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation (LIFTF) and the County of Nassau. The premiere indie film showcase will run 147 short- and feature-length films of every genre, music videos, and webisodes. The expo will also offer networking opportunities, the 350-seat historic theater, press and media opportunities, a convenient filmmakers’ lounge and several discussion panels.

EXCEPTIONAL PANELS

This year’s panel topics include: “The Write Stuff” screenwriting panel and our “Filmmakers’ Breakfast Panel” hosted by Mitchell Bard of Snapper Films; “Ask a Lawyer” and “Intellectu-

al Property and Cutting the Deal, Copyright, Trademark and Contracts” by entertainment attorney Michael Prywes; ”How to Take a Project from Development to Distribution” and “Different Ways to Recoup on a Production” delivered by Summer Crockett Moore and Tony Glazer from Choice Films; and the ever-popular Directors’ Audition Panel in which actors have “Seven Minutes or Less to Impress” several working directors. A “NY Loves Film Roundtable” will also be included in LIIFE events again this year. Except for the breakfast, all other panels are free.

This year’s LIIFE includes 15 foreign films from countries including Spain, Mexico, Iran, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Scotland, Albania, Australia and more.

Highlights of this year include the world premiere of award-winning Rockville-Centre raised Fred Carpenter’s feature film, “Dinosaur.” “Dinosaur” is a dramatic thriller about a day in the life of a veteran police officer who tries to juggle his turbulent home life, the daily stresses of his job and the apparent inevitable biker war that's about to engulf his hometown.

Other world premieres include Mara Bush’s “A Thousand Words,” Wes Clark’s “Playing Dirty,” Gregory Cioffi’s “The Museum of Lost Things,” Lucas Riou’s “Pieces,” and Steve Sage’s “Christmas Even Massacre.”

All together, The Long Island International Film Expo will feature 23 world premieres, two USA premieres, 33 New York premieres and 56 Long Island premieres. Films dealing with specific themes t this year's festival include the aftermath of losing a parent to cancer ("A Thousand Words"), a child dealing with their mother who has depression ("Pieces"), True wartime

PTSD ("True"), animal abuse ("Masters of Cruelty"), The Dogfather ("Animal Rescue"), gun violence ("3 Minutes) and how a school rallies around an autistic child ("Always A General").

Thirty-four films are also directed by women.

With a heavy celebrity presence, visits in past years have included noted actors and actresses such as Robert Vaughan, Steve Buscemi, Ed Burns, Steven Bauer, Kathy Moriarty, William Sadler, Dash Mihok and Ally Sheedy!

T

he Class of 2018 has certainly left its mark on the North Bellmore School District. For the last seven years, these bright and energetic youngsters have come to school each day eager to learn. We will miss their glowing smiles and their thirst for knowledge.

As kindergartners, they learned how to read and write, add and subtract, and observe the world around them. By sixth grade, they were writing research papers, solving complex word problems and conducting science experiments. They grew up before our eyes and became confident, passionate learners who are prepared for the next stop in their educational journey.

Elementary school laid the foundation for success.

As our graduates prepare for the challenges and opportunities that await in middle school, they do so knowing the importance of having a growth mindset.

Our students learn that there is no limit to the knowledge they can acquire, and they understand the value of supporting each other.

Our graduates will be leaving with so many great memories, from the first day of

school to the recent sixth-grade track meet that brought students from all five schools together at their future high school. They will remember the field trips, the concerts and getting to explore new technology. What child is going to forget building a structure out of gum drops and toothpicks, and trying to see if it would withstand the weight of a textbook?

In North Bellmore, our youngsters committed themselves to local, national and global causes. Through student-led charitable initiatives, they collected money, toys, clothes, personal hygiene items and more for people in need. They wore pink, gold and other colors to raise awareness for different diseases. Our graduates leave elementary school with an ability to think beyond themselves, an important trait to becoming good citizens of the world.

This is a bittersweet time of year. We will miss each and every one of our 319 departing sixth-graders, but recognize that graduation is a testament to their successes. To the high school Class of 2024, the course is yours to chart. Take advantage of all the opportunities that lie ahead.

une is a bittersweet time of the year as we witnessed the Class of 2018’s promotion ceremony.

On behalf of the Bellmore School District, let me say that we will certainly miss these Shining Stars that have come to school each day ready to “Lead and Learn.”

While they were our youngest students at the C.A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, they not only learned to read and write, add and subtract and develop socially, but became engaged members of Bellmore’s Community of Learners. They immersed themselves in the district’s leadership principles and core values, which has provided them with a truly comprehensive education for the past seven years – one that involved character development and the development of good citizenship, as well as academic learning.

Participation in school clubs and extracurricular activities provided these students with opportunities to make a difference in the Bellmore community, and to take on leadership roles. As Winthrop Avenue Winning Stars, they sponsored various charitable initiatives, including clothing and food drives and dog food collections for area shelters. They sharpened their music skills during concert performances and practiced the scientific method in preparation for the annual science fair.

As Shore Road Shining Stars, they have become

dedicated, trustworthy, responsible, culturally respectful and productive global citizens. Whether working as a Peer Buddy, cleaning up Long Island waterways with the Environmental Club or sponsoring a cause through the Student Advisory Council, each student found his or her voice and demonstrated leadership.

They expanded their academic horizons through the district’s science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics curriculum. They fostered their curiosity through use of zSpace computer technology and robotics, and expanded their musical horizons by learning to play the ukulele. After seven years of polishing their stars, they have become true Star Polishers.

As our graduates prepare for the challenges of middle school, they do so having acquired skills for responsible behavior and leadership. They have become part of the district’s culture, which has been recognized with national awards for digital leadership, as a top community in music education and, most importantly, as a Franklin Covey Lighthouse District for consistent practice of leadership principles and core values.

As the graduates move towards the next step of secondary-level education, it is my hope that each of them continues their commitment to academic growth and the realization that they have the knowledge and tools to lead as Star Polishers.

Taste Sensations for the Barbecue

s summer glides into view, here are a few tried-and-true recipes from the Merrick Girls Weekday Recipe facebook group that will open up the palate and provide taste sensations to last all summer long – whether cooking on your deck, in the back yard on in the barbecue pit. Manga!

GRILLED SEA BASS WITH GARLIC BUTTER

Robin Niad Canarick • 2 pounds sea bass • 3 tablespoons butter • Juice of 1 medium lemon • 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons/ fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/4 teaspoon paprika • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt To prepare butter sauce, combine butter, lemon juice, garlic, and parsley, in a small saucepan. Remove from heat once butter has melted.

Preheat grill for medium high heat. Right before placing fish onto grill, make sure to oil the grill grates. This can be achieved by using a large

pair of tongs, folded paper towels and a high smoke-point oil. Olive oil will work in a pinch.

Dip paper towel into oil and run across the grates at least 3 times to create a non-stick surface. This will keep the fish from breaking during the cooking process.

Combine onion powder, garlic, paprika, pepper, and salt in a small bowl.

Sprinkle mixture on both sides of fish. Place fish onto the grill and cook for 7 minutes. Turn fish and coat with butter sauce. Cook for about 7 more minutes. Once fish reaches an internal of at least 145 degrees F., remove from heat, drizzle with olive oil, and serve with your favorite sides.

• 1 clove garlic grated • 8 oz. can of pineapple juice, 100% juice • Fresh pineapple pieces for kabobs Salt to taste Mix all ingredients except for pineapple. Marinade for 30-45 minutes, make kabobs using shrimp and pineapple. Grill over indirect heat.

Carol Schmertzler Siegel Two large racks pork baby back ribs, salt, coarse ground black pepper SAUCE: • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1/4 cup minced fresh onion • 1 1/2 cups water • 1/2 cup tomato paste • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 3/4 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon bourbon • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper -coarse • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/8 teaspoon paprika To make the ribs, cut each large rack of ribs in

half so that you have four half-racks. Sprinkle a light coating of salt and a more generous portion of coarse pepper over the top and bottom of each rack. Wrap the ribs in aluminum foil and bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours.

As the ribs cook, make the sauce by heating the oil in a medium saucepan over medium/ high heat. Sauté the onions for five minutes, or until they start to brown. Add the remaining ingredients and bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/4 hours, uncovered, or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside until the ribs are ready. Preheat your barbecue grill.

When ribs are finished in the oven, the meat should have pulled back about 1/2-inch from the cut-ends of the bones. Remove the ribs from the oven, let them sit for 10 minutes or so, then remove the racks from the foil and put them on the grill. Grill the ribs for three-to- four minutes per side. They should be slightly charred in a few spots when they're finished. Brush barbecue sauce onto the ribs while they are grilling, just before they are served. Don't add the sauce too early, or it will burn.

Alphonse Lage

he Merrick community mourns the loss of a great Merokian, Alphonse Lage, better known as Al. He married his wife Carmela in 1957 in Queens, and the married couple then moved to Merrick from via Brooklyn in 1963 with their two children, John and Michelle.

He was proud to be a member of the United States Air Force, where he learned about engine repair, a craft he later used in his career. Lage was a businessman and the owner of Columbia Machine Corp., where he imported dry cleaning equipment from Italy. He was instrumental in helping entrepreneurs set up their own businesses across the country.

Carmela is well known as “Merrick’s Welcome Wagon Lady” (now retired), whose continual fundraising efforts are also very evident at the United Cerebral Palsy center in Roosevelt, where she held sway as a board member and chairperson of many events for over 50 years. Their daughter, Michelle, met her husband, Richard Mondello, at the center as stu-

dents.

Their lives revolve around the UCP center, always making a difference for the residents and students who attend.

The Lage’s son John and his wife, Robyn, reside in Texas with their children, Christina, Jackie, John and Jordan. Al’s greatest joys were his great grandchildren, Warren and Avery. Other Lage clan members include Kate – their foster daughter - and John Maher.

Carmela became a member of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce in 1986 and continues to sit on the Board of Directors. After his retirement, Lage became involved with the Merrick chamber, volunteering at Merrick’s festivals in the coupon booth, keeping all volunteers up to task!

Alphonse Lage passed away on May 24, leaving a legacy of love of his family and country, and always respectful of all those around him. He will always remain close to the hearts of those at the Merrick Chamber of Commerce.

Your school experiences have been enriched by immersion in music and art. Your library visits have provided you with opportunities to explore a wide range of topics and make reading selections to help you start your journey to become lifelong readers. Lucky for the extended school community, we have all benefited because you have shared your learning, insights and knowledge with so many of us.

Furthermore, we have focused on social-emotional learning to help you develop the life skills you need to achieve success at the secondary level but, most importantly, to define your own personal code, which will continue to grow and mature into the values and norms you will follow throughout your life.

The middle school may be bigger, the subjects a little bit harder, and navigating between classes an initial challenge, but do not be nervous. You are ready!

How do I know this? I’ve watched closely and lis-

tened carefully to thoughtful conversations; witnessed from afar caring interactions between you and your peers-whether on the playground, in the cafeteria, or walking through the hallways; stopped in your classrooms and observed you in action as you nailed that math problem; and finally I’ve spoken with and partnered with your parents and teachers to ensure that your needs were being met. You are ready!

So, as one last assignment from your Superintendent of Schools and the North Merrick School District, I ask you to start a reflective practice to build on the mindfulness behaviors you have acquired in North Merrick. To paraphrase Socrates: An unexamined life is an uninspired life.

As you travel on in your academic journey and personal life, remember to take the time to ask yourself: How do I show respect for myself, and others?

How do I show compassion for others? How do I maintain my integrity?

These answers may not be easy, they may evolve with time, but I know you will rise to the challenge because your personal code will be your guide.

I

t has been a very exciting year in Merrick. It seems like only yesterday, in September, that we welcomed a new class of kindergarteners; yet we are now holding moving-up ceremonies for our graduating sixth-graders. We wish them the very best as they take the next step in their educational journey.

Our faculty and students had a busy year. We have fully implemented new science standards and sharpened our instruction in STEAM through coding, robotics, use of digital tools and digital citizenship. Lions Quest, our social-emotional learning program, was successfully expanded to all schools. Our ELA curriculum continues to evolve as we look to develop ever stronger readers and writers.

This year we faced some disappointment in the progress of our capital improvements. After months of waiting, we still have not received approval from the New York State Education Department to proceed with our heating, air conditioning and classroom bathroom projects that were designed for each school. As a result,

these projects will not occur this summer.

One bright spot is that the site work at Chatterton School was approved. Renovation of the parking lot and construction of a new playground and basketball court will start at the close of school. In the other schools, we will continue to clean and maintain the buildings so that they are at peak quality when school opens in September. Additionally, our 2018-19 approved budget includes funding for security equipment upgrades throughout the district.

Finally, in late May, a Special Education Parent Teacher Association was chartered for the Merrick School District. We look forward to the SEPTA working hand in hand with our school building PTAs to provide wonderful services and support for our students and families.

Our unwavering goal is to provide the most rewarding education to all of our students in an engaging and safe environment. On behalf of the Merrick schools, I wish everyone a happy and healthy summer!

A Few Minutes with OnTour Director Sal Salerno C

alhoun High School junior Jackson Katz is a member of the On Tour Club who works on lighting and sound. He was eager to know more about the whole four-year On Tour curriculum experience, what it might be like within its dynamic day-to-day classroom environment. Your NewsMag sat with Jackson on an interview with the program’s director, Sal Salerno, in between rehearsals of the program’s last production of the season, a coupling of “Monty Python‘s Edukational Show” and “Grimm’s Fairy Tales For Old and New.” In it, we learn how Salerno picks his productions, and how students are graded during their four years in the program.

Jackson: How did you pick the latest play? Was it theme based or seasonal based?

Mr. Salerno: We always schedule our performances about a year in advance, and were offered the opportunity from a company we use that licenses plays and provides theatrical rights worldwide. I got a call from a vice president who said we had done a great job on “We Will Rock You,” and said Eric Idle from Monty Python is working on a new piece for schools, would I be interested in work shopping it? I said sure. I was figuring out my season, I just announced shows and picked “We Will Rock You,” so thought maybe we could fit it in somewhere alongside a fairy tale show.

Over last summer (2017) it became available, so I shifted the fairy tale show so we could do both. It's all the TV sketches from the Monty Python TV series that ran in the mid-to late-70s. Not all, but it's a selection of the best sketches. It’s called the “Monty Python Edkutashionel Show.”

Jackson: So this is a double bill? What’s the benefit for the students?

Mr. Salerno: At the end of the year the seniors have to do projects. They have final projects and they're performance projects, synthesizing projects of everything they learned, and what they're interested in. They choose and many of them want to direct something, or put something together. It's been a challenge the last few years as the schedule has gotten tight in May and June.

So I told them that, rather than cut the fairy tale show we were going to do, some seniors interested could do some of those children's pieces as their final project. And that way we kept it in the schedule. I could spend the full time doing the Monty Python project, and I decided to do one of the children's pieces as well to spread the wealth around and give seniors an extra opportunity.

Jackson: How do you choose your actors?

Are some better at playing a specific character, while others are better for humorous parts and still others better at dramatics?

Mr. Salerno: Yes, sometimes you know.

Basically, we're trying to train them to be capable in everything. But some students have an affinity for certain things. Some people have vocal affinities so that they speak well and they have the skill of memorizing. Other times, you get people that do have comic ability, who can really get you to laugh. They have that sense of timing and stuff. So that does happen. Sometimes students do everything we ask them to do but get stuck. And then there are students who, given their shot, come out and do a show and it's like: Where'd that come from? Where's that person been? I'd never seen that before.

Jackson: Technically, what is the lighting supposed to provide? Is it more diffuse, open and bright in musicals, and more mute in dramas, for instance?

Mr. Salerno: No. The purpose of lighting is to illuminate the stage and to make the actors visible to the audience. In some [CONT. ON PAGE 28]

shows, we have very basic lighting. In a contemporary play or even a Shakespeare play, the lighting is going to be fairly simple, in that there are not a lot of cues, or the cues repeat. So you will have a daylight scene, and an evening scene, and then you have perhaps a specially focused scene with a very intense spot. But they repeat, as opposed to a musical where everything changes. There's a daylight scene, a night scene, there's a dance number, there's a musical number, there's a song. So, the difference is, really a matter of volume rather than quality.

Jackson: Do you tend to focus more on elaborate productions so that all, or more, students can be involved?

Mr. Salerno: We try to pick productions that provide opportunities for a lot of people, and try to balance it out. A few years ago we had a lot of students in the class who were really good singers. I wanted to do play that had many lead roles for singers and I decided on “Into the Woods.” It has a very small cast, 20 people is pushing it. I think we had 24. We pushed it a little, though it didn't necessarily serve the program. We have 100 people in the program and we're only giving 18 people parts. That

can cause some concern for students who come to learn. So we did a second musical that year to compensate, which was big and featured lots of people in it. Occasionally, we get to move around.

Jackson: What will the students learn from this experience in regard to On Tour and the play?

Mr. Salerno: To be well-rounded individuals. They learn how to do multiple things at once; they can do their studies, they can do their rehearsals with their friends. Some are doing other activities like newspaper or kick-line. Perhaps the biggest thing they get out of it is the opportunity to learn how to balance their time and how to time-manage. Let’s not forget the knowledge learned.

Many will go to school and not study theater, but take a theater class for their elective and come back and say "I aced that class ‘cause it’s everything you taught us in ninth grade.” We give them a very intensive ninthgrade study track with a very advanced curriculum. The more they learn, the more it's going be helpful because we teach history by constantly doing those same plays. You don't simply do what's contemporary but are acting and working in the plays written in the 40s. They're doing plays written in the 50s. They're doing Shakespeare, they're doing the Greeks. They're doing French classi-

cal comedy. So, everything's always being recycled. You have to know about all the different eras to succeed in college and its helpful to be a well-rounded individual and the colleges like a well-rounded individual.

Jackson Katz: Where did you get your passion for theater? Where did you go to school and what is your experience?

Mr. Salerno: At my high school, Our Lady of the Valley High school in Orange, New Jersey, a very small school with 104 people in my senior class and the whole school of about 400 kids, we did one musical a year. In sophomore year we did a little play called “Carnival,” which few people have likely heard of. It was a hit musical in the early 60s and had one song called "What Makes the World Go Round," which was set in a French carnival at after WWI. I was in the chorus and I got on stage in the second act. I remember seeing all the lights out there as I was performing and I just felt really comfortable there. I really liked it and decided I wanted to go into English class and read parts and one-acts plays and things - with funny voices! I eventually decided I should go into theater and film. I applied to study theater in college and I applied to a few schools, including Hofstra, which had a Shakespeare Festival. So it ful-

filled my interest in Shakespeare.

Jackson: How did On Tour start?

Mr. Salerno: On Tour started in 1973 with two teachers, Gail Parkinson and Jim Drake. Jim was in charge of the English Department and the school wanted to do a district program, and I think they pulled them in. And then it just grew. In the midto- late ‘70s there were at least 10 productions a year, but there were also three people directing. There were a lot more people in Calhoun then and the productions were much smaller scale. There might be a big production here and there, but they were doing little things all over the place.

Jackson: How did you get involved in On Tour?

Mr. Salerno: I was looking for a job and I had gotten a few interviews in Marmaroneck and I came close. I was the finalist but I didn't get it. And I ended up getting a job in Mineola as a permanent sub running the drama program because the teacher was taking a leave for surgery. At the end of the year, with that job coming to an end, there was an opening here, and I came in to interview and I got the job in August. They had had several others that didn’t work out.

had to hire somebody full time and they hired me. The irony is that the person who got the job at Mamaroneck was a guy from Calhoun, I got his job down the line.

Jackson: What kind of homework do you assign and what type of testing do you give?

Mr. Salerno: It varies. Some of the homework is projects. Some of it is performance assignments. A lot of times, the work is done in class, but there are tests. In ninth grade there are a number of tests. In 10th grade there are written projects that they have to do, but a lot of stuff is performance.

You know, ninth graders build models.

12th graders this year made masks. So, sometimes there're computer things where they're doing computer drafting, or set designs. So, it varies. The senior project is in three parts. First is the research section, then the performance section in the middle and it concludes with a reflection section at the end; they have to write about their experience at the end. But there is also a presentation element. They can present and become comfortable talking to people. This element will allow them to grow to be comfortable in a presentation setting or in a business setting. Because we

have students that go on to law and medicine, this element can help them in business negotations or help them develop a good bedside manner.

Jackson: Are there success stories that come out of On Tour?

Mr. Salerno: When they come out of here they go in different directions, yes.

One student came out of here and decided to do a double major in communications drama. He ended up acting on Broadway.

But he liked comic books so much he went to Marvel Comics years ago and said "I’d like to do a theatrical production of Spiderman." And he created a show called “Spiderman Live.” Only, it was with acrobats and trampolines and actors and guywires.

And they did it at Radio City and he took it to every major venue around the country.

Another student got a gig writing for Robot Chicken on Cartoon Network. He then worked on a parody of star wars. So he went up to Skywalker ranch and met with George Lucas and did a whole production thing up there. George Lucas like the stuff so much he then called the student up and asked him if he’d like write a Star Wars cartoon? He did all the preliminary work and Disney bought it.
