Students Walk Out; Schools Discuss Enhancing Security

S

everal hundred CHSD students walked out of school for 17 minutes on Wednesday, March 14, and quietly but effectively called for new school safety measures as they read aloud the 17 names of students and facility that had been killed on February 14 at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The walk-outs at the six schools in the district are part of a nationwide student movement gathering momentum against violence in schools the students say is directed toward them. Another nationwide gathering of students and citizens was expected to take place on March 24 in Washington, D.C., as well as locally at SUNY Old Westbury and New York City.

“After this shooting, I have become afraid in my own school, and think about where I could take refuge should something like this happen here,” remarked Calhoun senior Amanda Geist, who, along with Amritha Jacob, Kara Vecchione and Carson Tremotto helped organize the school’s student walk-out event.

Bellmore School District superintendent Dr. Joe Famularo said the district is continually upgrading its cameras and placing stronger doors, such as bullet-resistant ones, in its schools. He added that administrators and teachers are constantly training using the latest materials and strategies to keep students safe.

Merrick School District Superintendent Dr. Dominick Palma has requested $1.5 million extra from the district’s carry over fund to provide for armed guards - if appropriate, and redesign spaces while strengthening doors and windows to make them bullet-proof, for example.

Meanwhile, Dave Seinfeld, acting principal of Kennedy High School, told Your NewsMag the school’s students were very orderly with their walkout. “I think students felt good about expressing their plea for safer schools and the need for

Kennedy sophomore Catarina Salerno said that the walkout was “a positive experience, and the senior class president paid homage to the students and teachers killed at Parkland.”

Sophomore Samaya Saperstein said it “felt important to be among a large group of students that are supportive of these causes.”

CHSD Superintendent John DeTommaso, in a statement after students had expressed their feelings in the walkout, said “… students in all six of our schools took part in the national student walkout for 17 minutes to support their fellow classmates in Parkland on a day of remembrance for 17 lives tragically and unnecessarily lost, and against the scourge of gun violence that is ravaging communities across this country.”

He added that some students chose to stay in their classes, opting to continue to focus on their studies during those 17 minutes. “I am … proud of all of our students for exercising their constitutional options and doing so respectfully, peacefully and without judgment, regardless of what they chose to do today.”

DeTommaso, at a recent CHSD board meeting, cited the district’s Comprehensive Plan 2017-18, a district-wide school safety plan on the school district website that explains the district’s current strategies for addressing and resolving a host of security issues, including invasions into the school.

With its plan, the district asserts it will remain vigilant in

Public Hearings Begin on Use of Sunrise Highway Aqueduct Pipe With Nassau County in violation of state dumping laws, a quick solution is needed DOUGLAS FINLAY

W

ith 52 million gallons of high-volume nitrogen effluent still being discharged into Nassau County’s West Bay daily in continued violation of New York State law, the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation is partnering with the county to expedite a solution to halt the discharge by refitting an unused aqueduct pipe under Sunrise Highway to transport effluent away from the bay.

The refitted pipe, at roughly $350 million, is considered the most economically feasible way to effectively stop the secondary treated discharge into the bay from East Rockaway’s Bay Park wastewater treatment plant by rerouting it to the outflow pipe at Cedar Creek’s wastewater treatment plant in Wantagh for dispersion into the ocean three miles off shore.

It is believed that once the discharge into the West Bay stops - one of four bays comprising the Western Bays of the South Shore Estuary, the bay could begin to recover and spawn sea life again within two years.

At a recent initial meeting at Wantagh High School county and state officials took their case for refitting the aqueduct pipe to the public and heard calls for a tertiary treatment to rid most-to-all nitrogen from the treated effluent, to begrudging respect for the plan, to all-out calls to implement the plan quickly to stop the continued discharge in the bay.

VIOLATING STATE LAW

James Tierney, DEC’s deputy commissioner for water resources, began the meeting, telling roughly 80 in attendance that the 52 million gallons being discharged into the West Bay daily “violate state and federal law” by continually discharging harmful nitrogen into the bay.

He said the discharge was responsible for the growth of macro algae, which has killed clam beds and spawning grounds for fish, and has loosened the roots of grasses in the marsh islands responsible for protecting against large storms such as hurricanes and nor’easters.

He said that while FEMA and HUD funds were dispatched to rebuild much of the Bay Park plant after being hit by a nine-foot wave during Superstorm Sandy, which shut down the plant, there was no federal funding to construct an outflow pipe three miles into the ocean because “there are already 24 such outflow pipes discharging into the New York Bight,” or harbor area.

He noted that a system to de-nitrogenize secondary treated sewage being planned at Bay Park could reduce nitrogen discharge to less than 72 parts per billion when finished, but was still years away.

Brian Schneider, Nassau County Deputy County Executive for Parks and Recreation, said that after several in the Department of Public Works - including now-Nassau County Department of Public Works Commissioner Ken Arnold - had grappled for years with the difficulty of building north-to-south drainage systems

for communities because of the 72-inch unused water pipe under Sunrise Highway situated in the middle of every plan they devised, it raised a question that, with no inexpensive way to cut the solid steel pipe, could it perhaps be used to transport treated sewage from Bay Park to Cedar Creek and out to the ocean?

Schneider said the steel pipe had been used decades ago to disperse water from Long Island South Shore reservoirs such as Hempstead Lake and Massapequa Preserve along Sunrise Highway to millions of residents in Brooklyn from 1880s until it was closed in 1950. Wellknown Queens’ locations such as Conduit Boulevard and Aqueduct Raceway, he said, pay homage to the essential work of the water system during that era.

The plan the department devised would feature a polyethylene sleeve fitted into the pipe – slipline technology - and links built to connect the Bay Park plant and Cedar Creek plant to the aqueduct pipe under Sunrise Highway. “That pipe is in better shape than anyone realized,” Schneider told the audience. “Pipes like that aren’t made anymore.”

Several residents spoke of their concerns about where the pipe to link to the outflow would be built.

“Would it go through Wantagh streets, or tear up Mill Pond?” one resident asked.

Deputy County Executive Schneider maintained the connecting pipe could be built along Wantagh Parkway before being linked to the outflow pipe as it comes out of the Cedar Creek plant, with no streets being dug up or damage to Mill Pond. He said the firm building the pipeline would have 30% design flexibility on the best way to accomplish the connections with the least impact on neighborhoods and the surrounding wetland environments.

Claudia Borecky, co-director of Merrick-based Long Island Clean Air Water and Soil Ltd. asked whether the refitted pipe could leak contaminated sewage into the

ground beneath where proposed sections of slipline pipe would be connected. “Could those connections leak to spill sewage into the ground?” she pushed to know. “They could create superfund sites!”

Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads (19th LD) – host of the meeting, remarked that, presently, every resident, when flushing the commode, sends raw sewage into a pipe, and those pipes have never been known to leak. He said that the sewage to be sent through the pipe would be treated twice and be considered safer than raw sewage.

Still, Borecky insisted on a recharge and tertiary treatment plan as the safest way going forward, consistent with LICAWS’s position that the best solution to the West Bay contamination was for near zero-nitrogen emissions at the Bay Park site.

Seaford resident Jack Healy told Your NewsMag he had opposed the original Cedar Creek plant and would also oppose the pipe proposal. “There is enough advanced technology today to build tertiary treatment systems at the plants” and without having to send sewage through pipes under highways several miles.

Tierney explained to attendees that, at present, it would cost roughly $800 million each for a tertiary system at the two plants, totaling $1.6 billion.

Environmental Sciences Professor David Stern of Nassau Community College suggested releasing some of the effluent into the head of Mill River, at the top of Hempstead Lake, so the effluent would make its way slowly down the river and be absorbed through the wetland as a tertiary like treatment.

But Adrienne Esposito, president of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, responded, saying secondary treated sewage could still have unregulated contaminants in it, such as 1-4 dioxane, and having it absorbed into a shallow aquifer such as the Upper Glacial was not

a solution.

Her group endorsed the aqueduct pipe plan, saying “We can’t wait 10 years longer” to stop the crisis in the West Bay. Within two years of ending the discharge, the bay could begin to “recover,” she said.

Phil Franco, chairman of the Cedar Creek Oversight Committee, appeared relieved at efforts from both county and state officials to address all facets of redevelopment of the aqueduct pipe. “I thought I would be here arguing against your plans,” he told the officials.

Instead, he asked about the integrity of the outflow pipe in handing the extra 52 million gallons of secondary sewage that would enter the pipe. “What is the condition of the pipe now? Is there a study being prepared should the outflow pipe fail?”

Schneider maintained the original outflow pipe, built in the 1960s, was designed for a capacity of 240 million gallons daily and that, as part of the 30% design approach, robots would be sent down into the pipe to evaluate its condition to determine whether it could withstand more nitrogen.

Schneider added that the plan was to keep the Bay Park outflow pipe into West Bay open during severe storm conditions to not “overstress the Cedar Creek outflow pipe during stormy conditions. We anticipate opening the West Bay outflow pipe maybe five days a year,” he said.

Rob Weltner, president of SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering And Save the Harbors), which has held meetings for years over the concern of the deteriorating West Bay and the loss of sea life in it, said “This [aqueduct pipe] plan is the way to move forward.” He said the county had backed itself “into a corner” with its constant discharging and its aging infrastructure, and the plan was a safe, economical way to back itself out – at least for the time being.

As I look back at my own childhood I don’t recall ever thinking that I may not be safe in school. Today students and parents alike worry about the safety of their children in school. As more schools and students have become targets for vengeance, it is clear that more and different safety measures are needed. Students in our high school district held a peaceful 17-minute Walk Out to demonstrate their fears and wishes to feel safer at school. They also acknowledged each of the 17 victims from the Parkland Florida school shooting by reading their names out loud. Your NewsMag asked students, faculty and administrators about safety measures in our districts.

She said that when the meeting was opened up to attendees the majority of those that spoke were against arming guards to protect the school. “We don’t need more lethal force being available in our schools,” she said.

Carson said using guns to protect against gun violence was not a viable option, as it could lead to more harm and appeared to be also for student control. “This seems like talk about ‘school policing,’ ” he said, rather than about protecting students.

Kara said there was an armed guard at Parkland High School when it was attacked by the gunman, and it did little to help those students.

Amritha Jacob, a Calhoun freshman and organizer of the walkout, said it “went better than expected,” with Carson adding he thought one-half the student population was involved with the walkout, in one way or another. Students were respectful, he said, though by and large they wanted to express the need for gun reform and school safety.

Amritha said talk of a “Walk Up” movement - a movement in which students treat one another more respectfully to counter a potential school shooter’s firing toward them – wouldn’t work to defuse potential gun violence on students.

“We should all be respectful of one another regardless of what we think or feel,” she said, inferring a moral default position.

the walkout stayed indoors, “most of the classmates I talked to, whether indoors or out, were supportive of better gun laws.” “We don’t want our teachers with guns,” said Samaya, “we need better gun laws.”

Anjali Jacob, a Mepham junior said that about 50 or so students from among hundreds gathered in the auditorium walked outside for the 17 minutes to honor the students in Florida, but “there was clear talk of gun safety and of better school safety among speakers while in the auditorium.”

Kara did not accept mental illness as being a cause for student shootings in schools. “Don’t blame the mentally ill for pulling the trigger,” said Kara, “if there was no trigger to pull these things wouldn’t occur.”

Amanda spoke instead of the need for better programs and solutions toward bullying. “Bullying just doesn’t happen in a school setting, it can happen outside school too,” she said.

Such intimidating behavior, the Calhoun students believe, can lead to younger, vulnerable students being pushed to become violent toward others as a means to “get even.” That isn’t a mental illness, said Amanda, that’s anger.

All students agreed they would, in some way, hope to be a part of the “March for Our Lives” event on Saturday, March 24, in Washington, D.C., in New York City or at SUNY Old Westbury campus. Bellmore resident Christian Keller, a professor of history and philosophy at SUNY Old Westbury, said the march was co-sponsored by the school and the Every Child Matters organization.

Paul’s Deli in North Bellmore to Close

aul’s German Delicatessen at 1890 Bellmore Avenue at Beltagh Avenue, a staple of North Bellmore’s hungriest noshers for decades, will close after 46 years serving neighborhood families and students with fresh salads, tasty sandwiches, provisions, canned goods, and coffees and teas because a medical facility will take over the building.

Its last day serving the community will be Mother’s Day, Sun day, May 13.

Jason Sobel, retail leaser with Ripco Realty in Jericho, told Your NewsMag he was leasing new tenants into the facility. He said interest has come from a veterinary group to a dance studio, but noted the majority of interested tenants had come from the medical field. He said all tenants, including Paul’s Delicatessen, had their leases bought out.

“We tried to get smaller mom and pop retailers into the building” but majority interest came from medical providers, he said.

On a Bellmore facebook page, reactions were mixed. Jeanne San Fanandre said “Paul's has the best German meat cakes - going to miss them - we travel from Oceanside to get them.”

Derek Brooks said the closing of Paul’s Deli is like “another piece of childhood is going away.”

Glenn Sowley spoke of going “there in the 60s as a kid [before it was Paul’s], [buying] baseball cards, monster cards, garbage pail kids cards.”

Edie Fulep Weinstein said she still “Loves that deli. They have the best food around. Especially love their salads!! I’m going to miss it!”

Owner Tammie, who took over from Paul roughly four years ago, and has worked at the deli since she was 15, said she would not take the deli to another location. An owner at Lazzat Indian Restaurant said it would move to Sunrise Highway and Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh, between Mattress Firm and Da Vinci’s tattoo parlor. - DF

n one week’s time I knew I had better get smarter, and fast!

It became strikingly apparent that I was falling behind. Being “smart” is no longer a phenomenon for the future or something just for techies. Smart is in.

I panicked when I found a friend’s locked car running for 15 minutes without her. Yes, I searched for a body! I didn’t realize that from miles away she could program the car to start and heat up inside, making it cozy for her arrival.

From even farther away, another continent in fact, my cousin called asking who the man was walking her dogs. My son turned on his apartment’s air conditioner, lowered his shades, programmed the taping of a show and streamed another all while riding a train. Yet another millennial was reduced to tears while at work as she watched and listened to her new puppy cry incessantly during her absence.

The latter resulted in doggie day-care and the culmination was an

eye-opener to the automated and smart world we have come to depend on.

Celebrating Easter and Passover: A Time For Family

C

elebrating Passover and Easter are among the most enjoyable times for family to gather to celebrate traditional meals and provide time together to reflect.

The Merrick Weekday Girls Recipe facebook page has once again opened its kitchens to share with the communities the preparation of foods for these festive holidays. Here are some traditional recipes for Passover and Easter you may like to try:

EASTER RECIPES EASTER PIZZA CHENA

Margie Demaio-Geruldsen (This is a family original) Makes two 9” x13” pies CRUST: • 3 tbs crisco • 1 tbs baking powder • 10 tbs sugar • Cinnamon - 1 tbsp • 3 eggs • 1 cup water • 4-5 cups flour (grandmas recipe calls for "as much as it takes") Combine all ingredients till soft dough forms. Let rest for a while to make it easier to roll out. Should be

enough to make two 9” x 13” pies. Cut into four pieces: Two for bottom crust and two for tops. Start with first two pieces. Roll out as thin as you can make it and place in bottom of trays. Allow dough to overlap so you can seal it with top crust later.

FILLING: • 3 lbs ricotta - drained overnight in fridge • 12 tbs sugar • 3 egg whites • 1 egg • Cinnamon - I use 1/2 tbsp • 1 tsp vanilla • Sliced soppressata (thin) • 4 hard-boiled eggs peeled and sliced Combine all ingredients except soppressata and

hard boiled eggs. Add 1/2 of mixture to each pie.

Cut thin slices of soppressata and place over ricotta mixture and then slice hard boiled eggs and place over soppressata. I make about four hard boiled eggs - two per pie. You can add more if you like.

Roll out two more crusts and place over pie. Roll the bottom and top dough together to seal pie shut Egg wash the top of pie and sprinkle with colored nonpareils. Pierce with knife a couple of times to allow steam to escape. Bake at 400 degrees for 50 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Check pie after 30 minutes to ensure steam holes have not closed.

You may have to pierce again. Remove from pans as soon as you can so bottom does not get soggy.

Allow to cool completely on wire rack.

Catherine Zarella-Kalman 9 inch tins (3) 5 lbs flour 2 cups sugar 12 eggs (room temp) Pinch of salt 5 pkg yeast 3 cups lukewarm water 4 sticks butter (room temp)

Easter Bread • 2 large bottles extract (any flavor) Put flour into a very large pot. Make a well in the center. Dissolve yeast in water. Pour into well. Add the rest of the ingredients into the well. Mix with hands, bringing a little of the flour into the well at a time, until thoroughly mixed. If too sticky, add a little more flour until dough is like elastic and smooth. Knead for 20-30 minutes. Cover with towel and let rise about three hours. Grease three 9-inch pans. Punch dough down. Cut into three equal pieces. Roll out with hands into three ropes.

Twist and put into pans. Cover with towels and let rise one more hour. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Bake for approximately 40 minutes. Test with toothpick.

until well blended, medium speed. I’ve always used a hand mixer, my friend always uses her hand mixer (tastes the same to me.) Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each. Add the vanilla and mix. Bake 1 1/2 hours (do not open oven door). Cool on wire rack thoroughly before opening the spring form.

Run a knife around rim of the pan to loosen cake to release sides from the pan. Refrigerate 4 hours.

Denise Rubinstein Grossman and Barbara Appel Levine • 3 cups (about 1 1/2 cans) coconut Macaroons, pulsed in the food processor to make crumbs (about 10 oz of macaroons makes 3 cups of crumbs) • 4-8 oz. pkg cream cheese (room temperature, softened) • 1 cup sugar • 4 eggs • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spray a spring form pan with cooking spray. Press the macaroon crumbs into the bottom of the spring form pan and about 1 inch up the sides. Beat the cream cheese and sugar

Thaw and drain

spinach. Squeeze out as much moisture as you can.

Soak matzohs in water to soften for about 5 minutes; Crush and drain thoroughly in colander.

In large bowl beat eggs. Add spinach, drained and crushed matzohs, parmesan cheese, farmers cheese and feta cheese. Mix thoroughly till all is incorporated. Coat 9" x 13" baking pan with oil.

Bake in 350-degree oven for 45 minutes or until top is golden brown and firm. Serve hot or at room temperature. We especially enjoy this for breakfast.

FILLING: • 8 large apples (sliced- I do not peel them) • ¾ cups sugar • 2 tsp. cinnamon • Juice of lemon Use a 9” x 12” pan. Grease well and fill pan with half of the batter. Add the filling and then the rest of the batter. Sprinkle top of batter with sugar and cinnamon (2tsp.) Opt: mix some strawberry preserves in the apple filling. Bake one hour and 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool cake and leave out, otherwise it will get mushy.

he Kiwanis Club of Merrick’s annual Pancake Breakfast will be held from 8:30 -10 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, at Applebee’s Restaurant on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore.

Tickets will be $8 and there will be a basket auction during the event. Each ticket gets pancakes, eggs, bacon or sausage, juice and coffee. The event is being underwritten by The Louise Pitlake Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate, so all proceeds go to Merrick Ki-

Meanwhile, the Bellmore Kiwanis Club will hold its annual pancake breakfast at Applebee’s Restaurant in Bellmore, from 8-10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 22. The admission this year is $10 for adults and $6 for children under 12. The breakfast will feature a 50/50 and several raffle baskets. As always, the proceeds go to the local needy families and to send underprivileged children to Kamp Kiwanis.

Donate Pet Food Today

ew York State Assemblyman Dave McDonough is teaming with Long Island Cares and Baxter’s Pet Pantry to gather donations of pet food to help more pets stay in their homes with their families and not be taken to shelters for lack of food.

The Pet Food Drive is through April 30.

Of note: All pet foot must be unopened and in its original packaging. No opened

bags, ripped bags or loose pet food can be accepted.

The best sizes of pet food to donate are five or 10 pound bags of dog or cat food.

Legislator Rhoads Asks Governor to Stop Aquifer Access by NYC

N

assau County Legislator Steve Rhoads (19hLD) has sent a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo asking the state to delay and take no further action in New York City’s request to reactive 68 groundwater wells located on the Queens/Nassau border.

The county is completely dependent on its sole source aquifers to provide reliable clean water for close to 1,400,000 people. Increased pumping of these wells from New York City will impact the state of the aquifers, and cause an increase in the potential for saltwater intrusion, and affect the movement of existing toxic chemicals and plumes.

Members of the Republican Caucus joined with state Senators Elaine Phillips and Todd Kaminsky, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, local activists and other public officials to echo their call to the state to stop any action in reopening the wells, until a sustainability study is done and the affects to Nassau County are quantified.

“I'm pleased to be a part of the bi-partisan effort to

protect Long Island's solesource aquifer from the real and present danger posed by New York City's plan to reopen long-dormant Queens wells,” Legislator Steve Rhoads said.

“While New York City has multiple sources of drinkable water, we have just one. The city's proposal to draw on Long Island water threatens the inevitable results of over pumping -- salt water intrusion and plume migration--which will put the safety of our drinking water at risk. The State's Department of Environmental Conservation must do the only responsible thing: Wait for the results of the ongoing sustainability study and then follow the science in rejecting New York City's ill-advised proposal.”

Legislator Rhoads told Your NewMag earlier that the county’s effort to reuse the aqueduct pipe under Sunrise Highway to transport effluent from the Bay Park water treatment plant in East Rockaway to Cedar Creek water treatment plant in Wantagh [see page 3] clashed with New York City plans to reuse the old aqueduct pipe.

County Study of Roads Designed to Implement Better Long-Term Maintenance Procedures

N

assau County is initiating a Roadway Sustainability and Compliance Study, through New York Metropolitan Transportation Council’s United Planning Works Program (UPWP), to assess existing roadway conditions on county-owned roads so that the Department of Public Works (DPW) staff can prepare ongoing long-term plans to maintain these roadways consistent with federal and state guidelines for pavement assessment and roadway signage.

“Our infrastructure is crumbling.

With over 1500 lane miles in Nassau we have a lot of work to do,” said County Executive Laura Curran. “We will soon begin a full investigation of our roads, so we can prioritize future resurfacing projects and rebuild with the future in mind.”

The planning effort will form the

basis for future Transportation Improvement Plan requests by identifying priority roadways for resurfacing. A key deliverable from this study will be an electronic inventory and management system that will be developed by a consultant and provided to the county. The study, overseen by the DPW and paid for by UPWP, will provide a comprehensive look at the condition of each county-owned and maintained road and determine the specific strategies for each road.

“While we undergo this new initiative, we will continue with our 2018 road resurfacing program as scheduled and repave over 87 lane miles throughout the county, compared to just 70 lane miles in 2017,” stated Curran. “It is vital to Nassau County’s residents and businesses to maintain a top-quality road infrastructure.”

Diet vs. Exercise: Which is Better for Weight Loss?

W

hat’s more important: diet or exercise?

Anyone who’s tried to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle has likely asked this question.

Sixty-eight percent of people want to lose 10 pounds or more, according to a recent Harris Poll on behalf of Nutrisystem. March is National Nutrition Month, and a good time to get started on your goals. So, should you focus on diet, exercise or both?

When it comes to weight loss, the split should be roughly an 80% focus on what you eat and a 20% on exercise. The logic is simple, say experts.

“It’s all about calories in and calories out. If you’re eating less and exercising, you’re going to burn more calories,” says Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at the company. “However, exercise often makes us hungrier, which is why many people who only change their exercise habits don’t see the scale move.”

To achieve a healthier lifestyle and shed weight, consider these quick tips that combine both diet and exercise.

• Eat more often: A 2015 study from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that on average, people who ate six times or more daily consumed fewer calories, had a lower body mass index, and ate

more nutrient-rich foods than those who didn’t eat at least six times a day. Eating smaller meals every three hours keeps you feeling full, controls blood sugar and helps boost metabolism.

• Watch portions: American portions have become too big; and those used to dining out may consider restaurant portions to be correct, when they’re often four times as large as what’s recommended. Learning portion control is key to losing weight. When eating out, ask for a to-go box and save half for later. You can also turn to weight loss plans, which deliver portion-controlled meals to your home.

• Veg out: Vegetables are low in calories, high in filling fiber and loaded with nutrients. For breakfast, add spinach to an omelet; at lunch, pile your sandwich high with fixings

• Get moving: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly, but research suggests that it doesn’t matter if you exercise for two-and-a-half hours straight or break it up into 10-minute chunks. Dinkelmeyer to Collect For Autism Awareness Month in April

ne nickel at a time, students at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are making a difference in the world. The children are collecting empty water bottles to raise money for various charities.

To mark Autism Awareness Month in April, the school will donate proceeds to Sensory Beans, a local indoor play space for children with disabilities.

Sixth-grader Justin Segrete said he was inspired to support these charitable acts because he is a strong believer of the mantra, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Fifth-grader Leah Smith added that she hopes Dinkelmeyer’s acts of kindness and generosity can start a bigger movement.

The initiative is sponsored by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team and led by teachers Lori Alduino and Lauren Saccone.

epham High School hosted its annual Chop Your Lock's for Charity event to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation recently, raising $37,000.

Guest visitors during the “chopping” event included the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming organization that attends charitable events, and the Amityville Highland Pipe Band.

The Mepham Skull & Bones Drama Club treated guests to a performance of its upcoming production, “In the Heights.” The night was put together by Mepham’s Participation in Government students, with seniors Lauren Lasker, Amanda LaRossa, Joe Lozito and Cassidy

Hoffman serving as hosts.

“Our Participation in Government and Leadership students really took the reins this year, overseeing an event that included students and staff from all over the district, as well as the community,” said Kerry Dennis, social studies teacher, kickline coach and St. Baldrick's co-coordinator.

want to thank you for the opportunity to have served as the president of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association. Over the past nine years, we engaged in many battles together.

Some we won, some we lost and we still have some to fight. But in all our endeavors, whether it was protecting our community from a shooter living among us, or stopping a pawn shop from opening next door, getting our streets paved or fighting the high cost of our water, your devotion to our little corner of the world inspired me and kept me going.

I remember Superstorm Sandy - when extension cords crossed our streets from neighbors who had generators bringing power to those without. I think of snowstorms, when neighbors with snow blowers cleared the sidewalks of their elderly neighbors. And I think of my neighbors who knelt in the dirt alongside me, pulling weeds and planting flowers to beautify our community.

They told us that the Campgrounds couldn't be paved. They said we couldn't have parking permits at our train stations or restrict cell antennas from popping up in front of our bedroom

windows. They told us that stop signs don't prevent accidents. Yet, together, we did it.

I am not retiring from this community. As a director of LI Clean Air Water & Soil ("CAWS"), I will protect our environment and fight the high cost of water.

Also, as founder of the South Shore Women's Caucus, I will fight against sexual harassment, discrimination and abuse, and help keep our children safe. Through the years, I've spent hundreds of hours with dozens of your children, who selflessly do service to their community. I've seen the spark of civic engagement ignited in their souls.

I am proud to live in North Merrick and proud of what we've accomplished. But our community is not without its problems. That's why I believe it's time for me to pass the torch to two lifelong Merokeans - Sue Moller and Lou Ciccone, both with young children growing up in a very different world with very different concerns.

Their devotion to our community is apparent.

And I'm very optimistic for our future, knowing that Sue and Lou will be at the helm of this association.
