Merrick Brotherhood Council 53rd Annual Thanksgiving Festival of Music

T

he Merrick Brotherhood Council and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District presented a beautiful festival of music including performances from middle and high schools, temple, church and community groups. The choirs sang to a full house of community members in the auditorium at Calhoun High School.

Musical participants included: The Merrick Chorale, Merrick Avenue Middle School Word of Mouth Chorus, Temple Beth Am Choir with 7th Day Adventist Church Choir of Manhasset, Grand Avenue Middle School Grand Voices, Cure of Arts Church Children’s

Choir and the Calhoun Concert Choir.

The inspiring concert included audience participation from siting the

Pledge of Allegiance to singing “We Gather Together,” “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and “America The Beautiful.”

The Brotherhood Council of Merrick is a community organization that seeks to foster mutual respect among people of all ages from diverse backgrounds, cultures and creeds, and encourages greater understanding and harmony within the community.

Giving Thanks…

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it is a holiday celebrated by All Americans. It’s an opportunity to reflect on what we have to be thankful for and truly appreciate the abundance of all that is good in our lives.

Thanksgiving also kicks off the holiday shopping season and The Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell’s Office and the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce reminds us to Shop Local this holiday season. Community retail and service businesses honor Veterans by participating in the Veterans Discount Program giving thanks to our Veterans. The local Chamber businesses sponsor all of the community holiday events that make our towns the kind of place you want to live, work and play. So, this time of year, please remember to thank the local retail and service businesses by shopping locally.

On Veterans Day I always think of my dad, Oscar Guise, who served in the Korean conflict. Before his passing, he proudly carried the American flag in the Veterans Day parade in my home town. Thank you and God bless to all Veterans. We live in the home of the free because of the brave!

The Merrick Brotherhood Council Thanksgiving Festival of Music was, as always, a fabulous success. I look forward to this concert every year. Student and adult choirs sang to a full house receiving standing ovations from an enthusiastic crowd. One can’t help but feel brotherhood and pride in our community after attending this annual treasured event which is now in it’s 53rd year. Watch the videos in the story and share with friends and family.

The joy of Thanksgiving reminds us how lucky we are to be Americans. It allows us to pause and think of

others less fortunate. Neighbors of all ages have been helping each other by collecting food and coats, making Thanksgiving baskets and donations.

New York State Assemblyman Dave McDonough honors Woman of Distinction for dedicating their lives to inspiring others and improving their community.

Meanwhile, The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce honored small business persons of the the Year for their success. Congratulations to all of the honorees.

The Merrick Girls Weekday facebook foodies group is always cooking up their favorite comfort dishes. See what they recommend for Thanksgiving leftovers and get some tips for making the best gravy. ROCKIN4RESCUE Makes Donation to Last Hope Animal Rescue of Wantagh

t this holiday time of year, we need to remember the animals which are alone and scared, just as we empathize with people alone for the holidays without families with whom to celebrate. Rockin4Rescue was formed in 2017 by Bobbie and Curt Arnel of Merrick, to collect and donate money to Long Island animal rescues. One hundred percent of the funds collected are donated to worthy local rescues.

On Sunday, November 10, at KJ Farrell’s in Bellmore, Rockin4Rescue presented a $500 check to Last Hope Animal Rescue of Wantagh. In addition, Rockin4Rescue put out a canister for monetary donations, in which an additional $295 was collected for Last Hope.

A fabulous local live classic rock band “Off the Record”, and afterwards, a talented musician’s jam, entertained the audience all evening.

At this time of year, many people will go to puppy stores, and choose an adorable little puppy as a holiday gift for their child. However, many of these dogs ultimately end up in shelters due to excuses such as: “we are moving and can’t take our dog”, “the dog got bigger than we thought it would”, “we don’t have time

for him/her”, “he/she is tearing up our yard”, etc. Statistics show that 90 percent of dogs who enter a shelter will never walk out.

If you are still intent on getting a dog as a holiday gift, PLEASE consider adopting a dog from a local shelter, such as Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter or Town of Babylon Animal Shelter, or from any one of a myriad of wonderful local animal rescues, including Bobbi and the Strays of Freeport, Last Hope of Wantagh, Yorkie 911, etc. You will feel SO GOOD about the special life you just saved!!! GRAVY

Kim Guarascio...3 Tablespoon of butter, 3 tablespoon of flour, 1 can of chicken broth and Gravy Master. Place in a sauce pan and whisk and keep stirring.

It will get thick, then and add chicken

RECIPES broth and more as needed. Also add some turkey fat to it. You can make it once before thanksgiving or make it a day before.

Beth Kranitz-Henkel …I seriously just take an emersion blender to the veggies and drippings in the pan. It makes a yummy gravy without any added flour to thicken it up Lauren Keller Mastrangelo …Use Wondra. You just sprinkle over drippings and broth till it’s as thick as you want. It’s not like cornstarch where you have to dilute it.

Terri Corso O'Shea … Save the water from the mashed potatoes, and any vegetables. Then slowly add it to the drippings from the turkey along with flour and a can of turkey or chicken broth.

Whisk it in the pan the bird cooked in over the stove. Delicious.

Patricia Boles Marinello Make gravy the day before with the neck giblets and livers. Boil with onion and celery. Strain and reduce add flour and sherry and turkey broth. It takes the stress out of whole meal. Turkey has too much oil to deal with the day off.

TURKEY TETRAZZINI

Layer all your thanksgiving leftovers , use pizza dough from store pillsbury not too thick, spread on parchment paper on a baking sheet, take leftovers out and let sit at room temp for about 1/2 hr. start w turkey and layer down the middle , sweet potatoes, veggies, cranberries, stuffing, drizzle some gravy on dry ingredients down the center, last layer on top should be a dry leftover like stuffing. Add some mozzarella cheese and pull up both sides to overlap, bake at 350 degrees approx 20-25

Susan Diamond...Simmer cut up turkey in some chicken stock-soup to soften. Sauté a chopped onion in oil. Add 2 teaspoons of flour to the oil and mix for 5 min. Add only the chick stock/soup not the turkey. Mix 5 min till thickened.

Add salt pepper garlic powder onion powder to taste. Add the turkey, some largely chopped roasted peppers (jarred) and frozen peas. Mix easily so peas don’t mush. Serve over wide egg noodles

Assemblyman Dave McDonough’s 16th Annual “Coats For Kids” Campaign Assemblyman Dave McDonough’s 16th annual “Coats for Kids” campaign, seeks the donation of clean and usable children’s and adult coats for people in need.

Over the past 16 years, this campaign has resulted in the donation of over 45,000 coats and outer garments, which are then forwarded to organizations for distribution to needy individuals.

“With the cold weather fast approaching, it is time to think of our neighbors and friends who are less fortunate and make every effort to see that our unused coats and winter clothing goes to help them,” said Assemblyman McDonough.

“I am astounded each year by the generosity of our community, and these donations will help keep many needy people warm this winter. It is my privilege to once again be able to conduct this program.”

Donation can dropped off at Assemblyman McDonough’s District Office at 404 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore, New York, where there will be a collection box

The Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting Program is a district-wide program for students who attend Calhoun, Kennedy, or Mepham High School and are interested in the broadcasting industry.

New York’s two hundred-yearold wrongful death law

A bill is currently under consideration in the State legislature to update the law regarding wrongful death cases.

For the last two hundred years, the law has been that the recovery by an Estate for wrongful death is limited to only financial loss and pain and suffering by the decedent with only a few very limited exceptions. As a result, wrongful death cases for children and retired people who passed away shortly after being injured were extremely limited despite the deep personal loss that effected the surviving family.

As an example, in a recent case, a retired gentleman in his 80’s was on a sidewalk and struck and killed by a vehicle which had lost control and mounted the sidewalk. This unfortunate man died immediately upon impact. He was the primary caregiver for his great- grandchildren while the rest

of family were working. Since it was his family, not himself, who suffered the financial loss of having to hire someone to watch the children or leave a job, there was only a very limited claim for financial loss under the current law.

Additionally, since that case involved an instantaneous death, there was no viable claim for pain and suffering. As a result, his family had very limited legal recourse against the owner and operator of the car that struck him.

As another example, a seven-yearold child was a passenger in a car that was rear ended by a tractor trailer on a highway. This poor child was pronounced dead at the scene and there was no medical evidence that the child was aware of any pain prior to passing away. Again, this family suffered the ultimate loss but had an extremely limited legal recourse against the owner and operator of the tractor trailer.

We can all recognize that there is most likely no greater loss than the death of a child, but this outdated law refuses to accept that. This draconian provision of the law victimizes grief-ridden families a second time after an untimely loss. Our politicians talk about “family values” but allow the law to continue to fail to recognize the loss felt by families who lose children, parents or grandparents who die due to the actions or inactions of other people or companies.

For the last several years, a bill to correct this injustice was passed by the State Assembly but rejected by the State Senate. Due to the change in Senate leadership brought on by the 2018 election, this might be the year that this horrendous situation can be changed.

Please urge your State representatives to support this much needed change in the law.

ellmore School District students learned through the Bellmore Stars Character Education program that part of being a leader is helping others and, that together, they can make a difference in the world.

Throughout the month, Shore Road, Winthrop Avenue and Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students hosted food collections and a coat drive to benefit struggling families in the community.

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month - Here Are Four Things to Remember The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is encouraging people to remember four important things about Alzheimer’s disease during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

“Raising awareness starts from within,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president & CEO. “As we work together to educate others about Alzheimer’s disease throughout November, there are things everyone should be aware of, regardless of whether Alzheimer’s is in their lives.”

Alzheimer’s is NOT part of normal aging.

Alzheimer’s disease and normal aging are not the same thing. Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that impacts memory, thinking and language skills, and the ability to carry out the simplest tasks.

More than 5.8 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s now, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that number could grow to 14 million by 2060.

Don’t stay silent about memory concerns.

Like with most other medical conditions, early detection of Alzheimer’s is important: it affords the person the opportunity to start medications sooner, which can potentially help slow the disease progression, enroll in a clinical trial, begin therapeutic programming and have a more active role in making medical, financial and legal decisions.
