Delivering Milk Bottles to Your Door Once More

hat do serving fresh apple pie for dessert to your family, drinking apple cider, enjoying creamy Greek yogurt and indulging in apple cider donuts in the middle of summer all have in common? They can all be delivered to your door once a week along with fresh farm milk.

That’s the promise the Bellmore Milk Company has been delivering to some 50 customers in Wantagh since last February, when a former high school student decided he wanted to have his milk delivered once again to his house so he could eat his doughnuts – and pies - too.

So, he started a milk delivery company.

“It began with wanting glass bottles of milk delivered to my home,” Todd Farber, owner of the milk delivery company, told Your NewsMag. He said he posted to Facebook to gather general interest as to whether residents, both local and around Nassau County, might be interested.

Buoyed by instant favorable feedback, he next began researching local farms within the region that may be able to provide milk to

match a plan to deliver it to homes. “I hoped to be able to use a close farm upstate” that could provide the milk, he continued, and found it in the Battenkill Creamery in Salem.

Not a certified organic farm, Farber says Battenkill nonetheless produces milk products that are free from hormones and antibiotics using free-ranging cows that are fed mostly grass. In the winter months, of course, grains and corn are the primary choices of

feed when cows are indoors.

Farber suggests the milk may be as healthy as organic milk because, due to shelf life, even organic milk is “spiked” with a preservative to keep it fresh on the shelves for up to two weeks. But, he says, “farm-fresh milk that we deliver to homes is fresh within a day or two of it being pasteurized and homogenized, so it will stay fresh for up to 14 days in the refrigerator.”

The taste of freshly produced milk out of a bottle is much different, too, he maintained. He says that with glass bottles, there is no aftertaste from leaching that can occur from waxed cardboard containers or plastic containers, for example. “The milk is not leaning against a material that can give off a residue,” he said. It also tastes creamier.

A ‘GREEN’ COMPANY

The smartness of using glass bottles – and the integrity they bring - becomes more evident when they are returned to the creamery to be cleaned and reused, significantly reducing or eliminating the process of adding them

to ever-growing waste stream. Purchasing glass bottles that can be returned for reuse is a statement for the sustainability of the earth.

The Bellmore Milk Company is a “green” company, and its customers are advocating for a “green” approach to living, Farber says.

The cost of ordering glass bottles to your home rather than purchasing milk in wax containers or plastic containers at a food store will be a bit higher, Farber admits. Each half-gallon of milk rings in at $4.20 while a whole gallon of organic milk can purchased at the supermarket for as little as $4.99. But Farber insists the half-gallon cost is well worth the price because it remains fresh without hormones or preservatives, and the bottle is recyclable, helping reduce waste in the waste cycle.

He adds that, with a subscription to purchase milk from the company, discounts are applied to the costs. One customer, in purchasing three bottles a week , purchases them for $3.99 per bottle.The company doesn’t offer gallons of milk because, he says, logistically they are too heavy.

Jones Beach Boardwalk Café Opens for Summer!

While a new Boardwalk Café had been on the drawing board since 2004 once the second Boardwalk Café closed, those plans were put in a holding pattern while the state explored a public/private partnership. Long Island restaurateur Steve Carl, partnering with now-President Donald Trump, attempted to open a catering facility where the cafe had been located.

It was thought that private enterprise could reshape the boardwalk landscape and generate new state income by bringing in several new groups of people for weddings and banquets, all hosted within a three-story 88,000 squarefoot facility titled Trump on the Ocean at the old Boardwalk Café site.

Ultimately, Superstorm Sandy ended any plans for such a venture when it destroyed much of Jones Beach State Park, and both the state and the Trump organization agreed to DOUGLAS FINLAY

he $20 million remake of the Jones Beach Boardwalk Café has opened its doors once more on the boardwalk at the Central Mall, moving away from the sit-down restaurant venue of the 1960s and offering instead a food court-like environment in which visitors can pick from a smorgasbord of fresh, healthy upscale foods that are designed to appeal to a host of summertime tastes.

The architectural style of the new boardwalk café also honors the original architecture of buildings along the boardwalk by using brick, sandstone and limestone materials that match those utilized in the historic 1920-30s art deco buildings.

George Gorman, deputy regional director of New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, told Your NewsMag that a Taste New York section will feature foods and beverages made expressly in New York.

After choosing selections, diners can then proceed outside the café to sit in any one of 132 seats with tables and shaded options available to enjoy lunches, dinners or snacks while experiencing sweeping views of the beach and ocean.

Joshua Soren, a founding member of the Wantagh Preservation Society who has done extensive research on Jones Beach and its environs, told Your NewsMag that the original Jones

The 7700 square-foot café with a tensile roof will rise 20 feet above sea level to eliminate the threat of flooding, with entry from the boardwalk by walking up several sprawling steps or up a gently inclining walkway that assists the physically challenged. It features a host of fresh food offerings, from tacos and rice bowls, to several burgers including turkey and vegan burgers and a blackened fish dish.

Also on the menu are Panini’s, and a grab ‘n’ go section with garden salads, several wrap selections along with yogurt, vegetable, cheese and fruit cups. Pastries such as croissants, muffins and Danish will be available, along with dry foods such as chips and candy.

For beer aficionados, four craft beers will be on tap, along with a host of canned craft beers and other best-selling brands, sodas, NY-bottled waters and drip and iced coffee, to name a few. Long Island caterer Centerplate is the

When that cafe closed, a modern-looking building many residents will remember was constructed in 1964 to continue the historic tradition, providing sit-down dining with more elegant fabric tablecloths, napkins and cutlery.

Gorman noted to Your NewsMag that the Central Mall concession stand - offering hot dogs, hamburgers and a flurry of fried foods that has stood for decades would remain at its location across from the new Boardwalk Café.

“The café is more about upscale tastes, so the Central Mall concession stand will remain throughout this summer” while the state explores new options or functions for it in the future, he said.

Once lunches, dinners or snacks are purchased, 132 seats with tables – and umbrellas – widely dispersed throughout an area directly around and east of the café are available for sitting. Mingled among wide-open table settings are several sports “venues,” such as table tennis , a bocce court, bean-bag throw court – also known as corn hole, a shuffleboard court and a large spray court where kids can run all day in continually spraying water to keep cool.

Taking the place of the old sit-down Boardwalk Café is a new restaurant called The Landing for more intimate dining pleasure. The new restaurant, situated upstairs in the old West Bathhouse ice-cream parlor, will feature table

service with a variety of more delicate foods to choose from a menu.

Still under construction in the state park is a bike path on the western section of the Ocean Parkway as it goes toward West End 2 beach from the end of the boardwalk - a 2.5-mile extension. It will permit bikers to travel the full length of Jones Beach State Park, from West End 2, to the beginning of Gilgo Beach, while connecting to Cedar Creek Park

REACTIONS

Reactions to the new Boardwalk Café have been unanimously encouraging. Patrick Benot, president of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce, commented that any improvements to the Wantagh area will help impress businesses by showing that Wantagh is in fact a strong community in which to explore business opportunities.

"The grand opening of the Boardwalk Café highlights New York's progress in restoring the historic vitality of Jones Beach State Park," Governor Cuomo said at the cafe's ribbon-cutting ceremony. "I encourage everyone to visit Jones Beach this summer and experience for themselves the transformation that has taken place at one of Long Island's true natural wonders."

State Senator John E. Brooks said the state had done an excellent job in getting the facility prepared. “Jones Beach is one of the state's top tourist attractions. I compliment Governor Cuomo and the parks management on this significant investment."

“This is an incredible addition to the Jones Beach State Park, which is in my district, and is the crown jewel of state parks on Long Island. I want to thank Governor Cuomo,” remarked State Assemblyman Dave McDonough.

Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive, remarked that “New York continues to be showcased as the beautiful, historic state it has become. Providing residents with more reasons to stay in New York for vacation than leave” has been a worthwhile mission by the state.

Your NewsMag features hometown stories with photos of your neighbors who are celebrating milestones and acknowledges all that contributes to the spirit of the community, which makes Wantagh a special place to live, work and play.

The concept of Your NewsMag began five years ago after the now-defunct L&M Publications (publishers of Merrick Life, Bellmore Life, the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen) delivering community news to Bellmore, Merrick and Wantagh, closed its doors. A few short weeks after its closing Your NewsMag was born. The magazine began with a Bellmore/Merrick edition with a goal to create a separate and unique Wantagh edition. Confident that Your NewsMag has been embraced by the community, Your NewsMag is here to stay!

After five years of success, what better time to begin a Wantagh newsmagazine than with the opportunity to congratulate 2018 graduates. In this issue you will find the names of all the high school graduates as a tribute to the hard work and effort required to reach this significant milestone. You will also find photos from graduation day. Meet the valedictorians and salutatorians and find out their plans for a bright future.

Hear from the superintendents of schools as they reflect on their experiences with students and offer their messages of congratulations and best wishes.

News in this issue reports that after a $20 million makeover, the Jones Beach Cafe is now open once more. Operating within a food court-like setting, there are a variety of food and beverage choices, including a section of delectables made expressly in New York.

There is plenty of seating outside the café for enjoying the beach and ocean views. Conveniently interspersed among the seating are fun light sporting games for the “kid” in all of us to enjoy. If you are looking for a more

formal sit-down restaurant, The Landing is the new place to go, atop the West Bathhouse where the icecream parlor once ruled.

Also welcoming are new businesses now open in Wantagh, in which new Wantagh chamber members celebrate with ribbon cuttings. Find out which local entrepreneurs are bringing their special talents and dreams to Wantagh, and check them out.

Don’t miss Wantagh films showing this year at “LIIFE.” The Long Island International Film Expo, the largest independent film expo on Long Island featuring independent films from around the world, will play three “indie” movies set in the streets of Wantagh and at Jones Beach. As a teenager I have many fond memories going to Jones Beach with friends, seeing my first live outdoor concert. Many years later I was drawn back to Wantagh to meet my in-laws for the very first time, at a family favorite restaurant in Wantagh, The Nook. Over 20 years later, I still enjoy shopping, dining and taking advantage of all that Wantagh has to offer.

in the district’s Science Research Program. Olivia is also a Science Olympiad participant and a member of the National Science Honor Society.

The Wantagh School District has named MICHAEL HENNIG and OLIVIA ZUKOWSKI as the Class of 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Olivia plans to attend the University of Miami.

Michael is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, co-president of the National Honor Society and president of the National Science Honor Society. He is also a Class of 2018 officer, a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and a participant on the Science Olympiad and Rube Goldberg teams. As a trumpeter, Michael is co-president of the Band Council and a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He also plays varsity volleyball.

GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL HELEN ZHANG and YINGYUE “MAGGIE” LIU from General Douglas MacArthur High School have been selected as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the Class of 2018. Each of the students has excelled academically, challenging themselves with Advanced Placement classes while being active members of their schools.

Among Helen's many academic accomplishments, she was a semifinalist in the 2017 Siemens Competition, was recognized as a 2018 Presidential Scholar candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program from the United States Department of Education and was recently selected as a National Merit Scholarship winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Helen and Maggie are highly involved in their school and community, both serving as valuable members of class office and MacArthur’s orchestra, science research, Science Olympiad and Quiz Bowl team.

Michael will attend Cornell University.

Olivia is an AP Scholar, president of the Foreign Language Honor Society and co-vice president of the National Honor Society. She is Class of 2018 President and co-president of the Government Organization where she serves as one of three board of education liaisons. As a finalist in the Trust for Sustainable Living Essay and Debate Competition, Olivia traveled to Dubai.

She has also published three articles in the American College of Cardiology as a result of her research

I

t is hard to believe that another school year has gone by.

I am certainly proud of the Class of 2018, for it has certainly made its mark on the community, as well as on Wantagh faculty. From the day they stepped foot into their kindergarten classrooms, members of this graduating class put their hearts into being stellar students and invaluable members of the community.

The Class of 2018 took challenging academic programs, participated in an array of extracurricular activities and represented us proudly in academic competitions and on the athletic field. This is the first group of students eligible to receive an Advanced Placement Capstone diploma. Many of the graduates also paved the way for peers enrolled in the district’s Virtual Enterprise International class, making connections to business students worldwide.

They entertained the community while on stage and displayed their work in local and regional art exhibits. More than 20 senior student-athletes signed national letters of intent to continue their sports on the regional and national level. The Class of 2018 boasts a National Merit Finalist, nominations for Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in

Student Performance, a New York State wrestling champion, a U.S. Army All-American musician, a Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist and recipients of countless academic and memorial awards, as witnessed during the school’s annual Senior Awards ceremony last month.

The Class of 2018 has also made strong connections among fellow classmates and the community. The seniors participated in countless food and clothing drives and wore orange during Unity Day to combat the effects of bullying, and to promote kindness and inclusion. Students worked to make Long Island’s waterways cleaner through their environmental studies.

As the Class of 2018 leaves our campus, its members do so with the tools necessary to be successful in college and in their future careers as they become productive contributors to our global community. I would also like to remind them that no matter where they ultimately settle, they will always have a home right here in our Wantagh community.

I wish them well in all of their future endeavors, knowing that the foundation that they received as Wantagh students will propel them to great heights.

T

his has been a great year for our MacArthur graduates. These young adults have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and musically,

earning high honors in all of these categories. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments.

What I am most proud of, though, is their commitment to community and their outstanding character. Just this year, our Generals spread awareness about debilitating diseases, raised money for various causes, bathed our town in blue during our annual Autism Awareness Week and they even gave blood to help others in their annual blood drive.

Everything they have done has been from the heart, and I am honored to serve as their superintendent. It is my hope that each one of our students continues to bring the commitment to community that they have learned at MacArthur everywhere they go.

My wish for our graduates is to make every opportunity count. If they continue to do everything from their hearts, as they have always done, they won’t go wrong.

Summer Vendor Fair in North Wantagh

emple B’nai Torah at 2900 Jerusalem Avenue in North Wantagh will hold its annual Summer Fair / Street Fair Fundraiser on Sunday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The indoor-outdoor summer festival will include antiques and collectibles, new merchandise, handcrafted items and bargains galore. Merchants are local and entrance to the fair is free.

Vendors can set up tables for $50 per 10’x9’ indoor and 10’ x 16’ outdoor spaces.

Temple B’nai Torah is a recently formed reformist congregation from the merger of the present temple with Temple Emanu-El

of East Meadow. Temple B’nai Torah serves over 600 member families in Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford, East Meadow, Levittown, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage and even Great Neck communities.

The fair has drawn upwards of 2000 people in previous years.

Wantagh Films Premiere at the Long Island International Film Expo

howing this July at the Long Island Independent Film Expo in Bellmore are three independent films set in the streets and locations of Wantagh, including one film tracing the roads in and around Jones Beach.

The movies, “Always a General,” “Playtime” and “Street Racer: Culture of Speed on Long Island” featuring Wantagh resident Tony Costa will show during the 21st Annual Long Island International Film Expo scheduled from Friday, July 13 through Thursday, July 19, at the historic 350-seat Bellmore Movies, 222 Pettit Avenue, Bellmore.

Named one the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine, LIIFE is the premiere independent filmmaker community showcase on Long Island sponsored by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation (LIFTF) and the County of Nassau. The premiere indie film showcase will run 147 short- and featurelength films of every genre, and include music videos and webisodes. The expo will also offer industry networking opportunities, a convenient filmmakers’ lounge and several discussion panels.

EXCEPTIONAL PANELS

This year’s panel topics include: “The Write

Stuff” screenwriting panel and the “Filmmakers’ Breakfast Panel” hosted by Mitchell Bard of Snapper Films; “Ask a Lawyer” and “Intellectual Property and Cutting the Deal, Copyright, Trademark and Contracts” by entertainment attorney Michael Prywes; ”How to Take a Project from Development to Distribution” and “Different Ways to Recoup on a Production,” delivered by Summer Crockett Moore and Tony Glazer from Choice Films; and the everpopular Directors’ Audition Panel in which actors have “Seven Minutes or Less to Impress” several working directors. A “NY Loves Film Roundtable” will also be included in LIIFE events again this year. Except for the breakfast, all panels are free.

This year’s LIIFE includes 15 foreign films from countries including Spain, Mexico, Iran, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Scotland, Albania, Australia and more. Celebrities once again grace the screens in films at year’s LIIFE, including Robert Clohessy (“Blue Bloods”), Ed Asner (“Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Chuck Zito (“Sons of Anarchy”), Joan Jett and Kevin Brown (“30 Rock”) in “Dinosaur”; David Beach (“Veep,” “Delocated”) in “The Perfect Fit”; Sean Dominic (“Greenleaf”) in “Cal & V”; Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water,”

“Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy”) in “The Boogeys,” which also features actors Douglas Tait (“Grimm”) and Ron Rogge (“Stranger Things”).

WORLD PREMIERES

Twenty-three world premieres include award-winning Rockville-Centre raised Fred Carpenter’s feature film, “Dinosaur.” “Dinosaur” is a dramatic thriller about a day in the life of a veteran police officer who tries to juggle his turbulent home life, the daily stresses of his job and the apparent inevitable biker war that's about to engulf his hometown.

Other world premieres include “Always a General,” a movie filmed in Wantagh and Levittown about how MacArthur High School rallies around an autistic child, Mara Bush’s “A Thousand Words,” Wes Clark’s “Playing Dirty,” Gregory Cioffi’s “The Museum of Lost Things,” Lucas Riou’s “Pieces,” and Steve Sage’s “Christmas Even Massacre.”

This year's Long Island International Film Expo will feature films dealing with specific themes, including the aftermath of losing a parent to cancer ("A Thousand Words"), a child dealing with their mother who has depression ("Pieces"), True wartime PTSD ("True"), animal

abuse ("Masters of Cruelty"), animal rescue (The Dogfather”) and gun violence ("3 Minutes). "Playtime" examines the live Eastline Theatre in Wantagh, and its relation to live theater around Long Island.

Thirty-four films are also directed by women.

With a heavy accent on celebrity presence, visits in past years have included noted actors and actresses such as Robert Vaughan, Steve Buscemi, Ed Burns, Steven Bauer, Kathy Moriarty, William Sadler, Dash Mihok and Ally Sheedy!

Celebrities lined up for this year’s LIIFE irreverent awards ceremony include Chris Roach (“Kevin Can Wait”) as this year’s Rising Star Honoree and Kevin Brown (“30 Rock”), host of the Closing Night Party and Awards Ceremony, who will also be honored with a Friend of the Foundation award. More celebrity honorees and presenters will be announced.

William A. Haps Memorial Scholarship Recipients

antagh High School seniors Jaclyn Corbin and Emily Kalinoglu and Levittown’s MacArthur High School seniors Katherine Inglese and Megan Opallo were recipients of the William A. Haps Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Wantagh Fire Department. Each of the students received $1000 toward their studies in the humanities this coming fall.

The William A. Haps Memorial Scholarship

honors Haps, who died in 1989, for his 42 years of commitment to the Wantagh Fire Department. To be eligible for the scholarship, recipients must intend to study humanities, including emergency services, criminal justice, nursing, teaching, social work or medicine. The students need four recommendations. Excelling in academics, participation in extracurricular activities and financial need are also considered when choosing a scholarship recipient.

New Women’s Consignment Boutique Offers Designer Treasures

T

wo women, once perfect strangers, have opened a new woman's consignment boutique called Lucy's Treasures, at 1890A Wantagh Avenue.

Maria Scarpati, of Massapequa, had often thought of opening a consignment store because her closet was full of clothing with tags and shoes never worn.

Enter Amy Fischer of Farmingdale, whose boyfriend Joe is property manager at the location and learned of Scarpati’s interest in opening a consignment stored, and teased Fischer about it. Fischer has just lost her second interested party in starting their own consignment shop.

Both women met and connected, sharing the same vision of a local store in which shoppers could stop in and enjoy the experience of browsing and perhaps afford to purchase an out-of-reach

item or two.

Within three weeks of that meeting Lucy's Treasures was created. The store is named after Scarpati’s granddaughter and the ladies say they have had a great reception from the community and surrounding towns. . "Everyone that walks in is impressed by our store and loves the fact that it's local," remarked

Fischer.

At the boutique, people can find a variety of women's merchandise that expands to all ages. Shoes, accessories, handbags and clothing are sold at the boutique and everything is based on consignment.

People can also sell their gently used/ new items for profit. Hours at Lucy's Treasures are Tuesday- Thursday, 11 a.m.-to- 6 p.m. and Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m.- to- 5 p.m.

John Theissen Children’s Foundation Surf’s Up For Kids A few years ago, I had the opportunity to the meet an incredible Welsh pony named Surf at a barn where my daughter was taking lessons. At first, Surf seemed like a nervous and shy pony. Whenever I had the chance to work with Surf, I felt such a relaxed, stress-free feeling and I felt that he would be an incredible therapy pony. Just being present with Surf would help alleviate my stress. I could only imagine what he would do for a child battling cancer or any other life-threatening illness. A child could focus on Surf while grooming him, walking him on a lead rope and even riding him, instead of the devastating illness he or she may be fighting. This past January, Surf’s owner reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in buying Surf for my program. I was offered an incredible price for Surf and I am so happy to announce that JTCF now has full ownership of this special pony. I believe he will do wonders for the children that we help.

“Surf’s Up For Kids” will focus on helping children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We will also help children with special needs. Therapy services will include all aspects of pony care, from basic grooming, to walking and even assisted riding. Children will focus on Surf, instead of the illness or disability that they are living with or fighting. Surf’s Up For Kids will be one hundred percent free to the families and the children we serve. Surf’s home is in Huntington, New York at Stanhope Stables.

ummer has arrived! Flowers are blooming and the sun is bright, making it an ideal time to reinvigorate your home with a fresh coat of paint.

Painting your home can go a long way in restoring the beauty of your home and making it look fresh, and current.

Start at the curb and take a real good look at the house. Has time changed your view on the curb appeal of your home? Painting the exterior can do wonders for renewing pride in your home and making it beautiful once more.

When picking colors, consider the elements that will remain constant, such as stone work and brick, and then select complimentary colors to match.

Accent features by using different colors for the body of the house, the trim and the shutters. Perhaps add a little personality by painting the front door. Go bright and go bold! Don’t be afraid to express your personality and make a statement by choosing a bright red, green, yellow or even orange color paint for the front door. These complimentary colors

Having a pair of binoculars on hand is a good idea. You can take a closer look at the upper floors for any damage the winter elements have caused. Beauty is not the only benefit of painting. Professionally painted and stained woods prevent termites from making their way into your home. Water, mold and mildew of poorly painted or exposed wood can cause softening and decay, which may result in structural damage.

The weather can especially cause damage to your wood deck. Inspecting and keeping up with paint or stain can save on costly repairs, like replacing deck boards.

Check around skylights and look at the

interior ceiling for water damage. You will notice this damage as round tan-colored stains on your ceiling or ceiling tiles, or dried drip marks running down the skylight. Because hot air rises, a white ceiling can begin to look tired and grey around the corners from the heat that heats your home.

Challenges for selecting interior paints go beyond color. You will be happier with your selections if you follow some simple paint finish basics. If you are painting a kitchen or bathroom, select a washable matte finish for the walls. For an elegant look in the living room, dining room or bedroom a flat finish is the best selection. Regardless of the room you are painting, semi-gloss is best for doors and trim because it is both
