The Bellmores have a rich history and for over 50 years the chamber has been supporting commerce and contributing to preserving its history. Over the years the Chamber has been responsible for many major projects including the Bellmore Village revitalization in the 1990â€™s, the recent installation of the new Bellmove Village sign

adorning the train trestle, and the restoration of the historical railroad shelter located on Pettit Avenue. The chamber takes pride in Bellmore and invests in its past and supports its future. Included in this almanac are Bellmore stickers so you to can show your Bellmore pride by placing these stickers where all can see. The Bellmores began as a destination for farm and seafaring commerce, as farmers and baymen from far and wide traveled for goods and services to maintain their livelihoods and their families. Friday Night Car Show A Major Long Island Attraction

mong many recent historical achievements in Bellmore is the first car show, which began in 1999 at the same Long Island Rail Road parking location that it is presently held. It was then called the Friday Night Cruisers, a resident run traveling car show that experienced success in whichever town it landed in – including Bellmore. Downtown Bellmore was also promoting its new

image as a “restored village” during those years, renaming Bedford Avenue as Bellmore Village. It was among the first towns in Nassau County to put old style street lighting in, add benches and pavers, and restore several storefronts to reflect an earlier era. Conventional thought developed to “have a stroll down memory lane” and see what it was like to live in an earlier era. The new car show, with its antique and

Although its growth also became its demise, as it grew to take up several

crowds and the show came to a close. However, for several years afterward, antique cars and hot rods continued to fill the empty parking lot spaces on Friday nights in the same lot. The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores stepped in and took on managing the car show gatherings. The car show brings an influx of people to not only look at all of the interesting cars but to shop and dine while theyâ€™re here. The new Chamber Friday Night Car Show, started at the same lot, only this time with control over cars that come, where restrooms would be located, how long the cars could stay, guaranteed cleanup after the show, and to provide assistance to commuters to safely leave the lots once returning home from work on the LIRR. The Friday Night Car Show is every Friday night, weather permitting, from the first Friday in May to the first Friday in October from 6:00PM to 10PM at the Bellmore LIRR Parking

Lot on Broadway between Bellmore Avenue and Bedford Avenue. Come down and join the fun! It is free for spectators and admission to showcase a car is $5.00. Funds collected from car entry fees go back into the Bellmores and are used for the many improvements and events the chamber sponsors. Now into its eighth year the Chamber, in partnership with the Town of Hempstead, manages still one of the finest car shows in the country which conrtibutes to keeping Bellmore front and center as one of the best places to live and work on Long Island.

History of the Bellmores

he community of Bellmore traces its beginnings back to 1643, and was considered a farming and fishing town until fairly recently in its history. Known as both Little Neck and New Bridge, the town officially became Bellmore in 1900 when the post office was established. The post office was located in a general store near the station. Meanwhile, North Bellmore was initially called Smithville in the 1850’s because of the many Smithville family members that lived in the surrounding area. Residents petitioned for a Smithville post office in 1869 but they were refused, because there was already a Smithville in upstate New York. Instead they were able to name the post office Smithville South appproved unil 1920 when the post office was

renamed North Bellmore. The busy Long Island Railroad station in the center of town made Bellmore a “commuter’s paradise” in the 1920s and the population began to grow significantly. Farmland in the Smithville South area was subdivided for housing, and the construction of Sunrise Highway brought more settlers, and then the housing boom after WWII brought the biggest population boom of all. Stores and taverns sprung up to service the thriving community. Weinman’s Hardware store opened in 1921 and closed decades later after Roy Weinman retired on his 90th birthday in 2014. Two months after Roy Weinman’s passing in 2017 Bedford Avenue was renamed Roy Weinman Avenue. The street sign can be seen at the corner of Bed-

The Menorah lighting while a tradition in Jewish homes, emerged into public celebration when the country embraced the idea of all religious expressions be acknowledged together in the spirit of inclusion within the town, and laws were passed to ensure public inclusion. Today, the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores continues the tradition of celebrating the spirit of the holiday season by

placing decorative holiday snowflakes throughout the Bellmores and inviting the community to partake in an annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting and spectacular Holiday Extravaganza. Bellmore is a vibrant suburb; home to various schools, houses of worship, and civic organizations. It is the gateway to Long Island’s beautiful beaches, parks, and major roadways. In keeping with their mission the chamber raises funds from the annual Bellmore Family Street Festival and Friday Night Car Show to host holiday celebrations and earmark funds towards improvements that support the success of commerce in the Bellmore communities. Chamber President Jim Spohrer pushed to have the sign installed last year in time for the 2018 street festival. The new sign, in a new color, was changed from green to burgundy to match the chamber logo and stand out better for all to see. Bellmore Chamber Restores Historic Bellmore Railroad Shelter This year the Chamber took on another project, the restoration of the historical Long Island Rail Road shelter which stands on Pettit Avenue across from the Bellmore Fire House. It was originally maintained by the Historical Society of the Bellmores which dissolved on December 31, 2014. The “train house” as the Chamber calls it, was acquired from the Historical Society when exclusive use was granted to the chamber by the Town of Hempstead on January 30, 2015. In May of 1995 the over one hundred year old shelter got its first face lift when Louis Sofia, Jr., a member of Boy Scout Troop 285 in Bellmore set out to refurbish the old railroad shelter as a community service

project to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. The project included replacing the roof, scraping off the old paint and repainting the exterior and interior. There is a plaque on the shelter acknowledging the completion of the Eagle Scout project. After a great deal of research and evaluation, it was decided that the train house structure could be

fully restored to preserve this cherished piece of history for future generations to see and enjoy. The circa 1890 train shelter is no longer an eyesore and is now in full use serving as a storage shed for the chamber. There is a display case on the front of the shelter currently displaying historical photos of the railroad shelter courtesy of the Bellmore

Memorial Library. Peer into the past of the Bellmores through pictures, historical artifacts and documents at the Bellmore Memorial Library. The library continues to collect photos and history from every era of the community’s development to chronicle the growth of one of the truly remarkable early South Shore communities.

Bellmore Family Street Festival Opens September 19th and continues until September 22nd.

he 33rd Annual Bellmore Family Street Festival is presented by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores and sponsored by Nassau County Executive Lauren Curran and the NCPD, Supervisor Laura Gillen and the Town of Hempstead, Stop & Shop, Crunch Fitness, All Island Media, Merrick Collision, 4 Seasons Sunrooms, Dime Savings Bank, Island Federal Credit Union, Alweis Engineering, Piccolo Ristorante, Island Greenery, Ridgewood Savings Bank and Northwell Health. The festival begins on Thursday, September 19th, with the opening of the midway carnival, which runs all weekend with live entertainment at the Pettit Avenue show mobile. Meanwhile, the street portion of the festival continues on Saturday and Sunday, September 21st and 22nd, and will feature all the vendors. This year, the festival has added 2 new shows! The first one is Fliippinout, which is a 2 trampoline high flying act with a 9ft clear wall in the center. Come watch them bounce and fly thru the air on foot, on skis and snowboards. The second act is The Wild World of Animals. They feature 16 animals from all around the world including a Leopard! They will also be bringing with them a Binturong, Pot Bellied Pigs, an Alligator, a European Eagle Owl and many more. In addition, there will be the Kids Expo, featuring child friendly rides and a Craft Expo, featuring only hand-crafted vendors; and a Military Expo, featuring the latest military attractions from all branches of the military, Veteran’s organizations and service groups. The Health and Wellness members can be

found throughout the festival. The Home Improvement Expo showcases our local contractors and members providing helpful ways to improve your home. Add live music all day long and this is one festival not to be missed. The chamber hopes to see you there. The family festival gives the chamber and its members a chance to say “Thank You” to the community for shopping and doing business locally. The festival affords members of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores a chance to not only “show their stuff,” but to also give something back to the community in the form of entertainment, information and good old fashioned family oriented fun. The wide variety of exhibits and attractions has earned the reputation as Nassau County’s largest family oriented event of its kind. Come join the fun! NO PETS ALLOWED AT FESTIVAL For the safety of fair goers chamber officials request cooperation of attendees to leave their pets home. Bellmore’s Annual Spooktacular Halloween Parade

ach year, during the third week of October, the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores hosts the Annual Halloween Parade and Trick-orTreating for the children of the community, to kick off Halloween. This year the festive parade will be Saturday, October 26, 2019. Assembly takes place at the Bellmore Movies on Pettit Avenue beginning at 11:45 a.m., with festivities commencing at 12 noon. The parade heads up Bedford Avenue and the children and parents are all dressed up in a variety of colorful character costumes. Haunting spooky music can be heard throughout the downtown district as the children along with their parents/ guardians make their way up the avenue. All merchants that have “Mr. Pumpkin” on their

window participate in handing out treats to the children. There will also be a Halloween back drop set up at the end of the parade so parents can take keepsake pictures of their children. The chamber invites you to bring your children in their scary and not-soscary costumes for a day of gathering and fun.

he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores will present its Annual “Easter Parade with the Easter Bunny” on Saturday, April 4, 2020 when children and their families begin meeting at 11:45 a.m. at the Bellmore firehouse on Pettit Avenue, just north of the LIRR Bellmore station. At noon, the children and their families will parade through the village up Bedford Avenue, led by the Easter Bunny, to Oak Street, where they will have a chance to have their picture taken in a spring setting with the Easter Bunny. (Please remember to bring your own camera for photos). Before the parade, each child will receive Easter candy, compliments of the chamber. Following a ceremony, American Legion and Bellmore V.F.W will be joined by all manner of community organizations such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Mepham and Kennedy high school marching bands, members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association, and members of the North Bellmore and Bellmore Fire Departments, and members of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores to march in the parade.

North Bellmore Library Re-Opens After Renovations With Full House At Chamber Ribbon Cutting

erusing the newly painted, cataloged and expanded North Bellmore Library, one quickly notes its remarkable transformation. The once ramshackle structure in need of repair and bursting at the seams is now, post renovation, a spacious beacon of information, inspiration and entertainment to an excited and proud community. Bellmore chamber board members, elected officials and the community at large showed its support with a standing room only attendance at the library’s Chamber of Commmerce of the Bellmores ribbon cutting ceremony. Many came to also bid farewell to the library’s esteemed and beloved, long-time director, Thomas Bazzicalupo who completed 28 years of service on Wednesday, August 28th. Tom was an integral part of bringing the dream of a new library to life since it’s inception during library board meetings that began in 2013. Barbara Fillios, the library board’s longest standing member, credits the director for doing a lot to make it happen. “Tom is a team player,” said Barbara. “He is also a great listener and an all around nice guy. We were very lucky to have him for as long as we

did. We’re going to miss him,” she added. Thomas Bazzicalupo, began children’s story-time at the library in 1991. One of his greatest joys was to have an attendee return years later as an adult to visit. The expanded space in the children’s room including an activity room for story-time (which continues on) and crafting as well as a screen for movies. He notes the addition of Ipads and the creation of a designated area for children with special needs including a place for parents to sit, read and observe. Tom joked that while at work he was always complaining of being cold and yearned for warmth. His complaints were substantiated once his old office walls were demolished and a lack of insulation validated his woes! He also joked that he hadn’t yet

been shown how to adjust the air conditioning in the renovated space. So, despite newly insulated walls, he was still freezing! . Jessica Tymecki, interim Library Director, notes the legacy Tom leaves behind. “He has the kindest heart and a true respect and love for the staff and community of the North Bellmore Library. He worked many years to make this renovation happen,” she explained. Jessica was raised in North Bellmore and for the past twelve years she has been Head of Young Adult Services. Jessica instituted a SEPTA collection to support patrons with special needs and a video game collection for teens. The new library, with its additional 4,500 square feet, boasts the latest technology, an elevator, IT room, storage room, book mending area, musical

CD’s, DVD’s, large circulation desk, projection room, 10 public computers, innovation room with 3-D printers and a sewing machine. A community room with a stage and capacity of 158 will host outside groups and shows. A fireplace was installed as a focal point in the adult section, behind which a marketplace room of snacks invites patrons to stay a while. Despite the challenges, since the board first accrued a bond for the renovation in 2015, the new library has exceeded everyone’s dream. Tom Bazzicalupo’s imprint is as much a part of the present library as the brick and mortar and books within. Bazzicalupo’s parting words thanked everyone for their support. “You always seemed to find us somehow. It has been a pleasure,” he said to the community he’s longed served.
