Bellmore Historic Movie Theatre Celebrates Reopening

The oldest movie theatre on Long Island is now open with restrictions. The Bellmore Movies And Showplace on Petitt Avenue in Bellmore is now open after being closed due to the Covid-19 mandatory theatre closings.

At a press conference and celebratory film strip (ribbon cutting) ceremony, theatre owner Anne Stampfel shared how diffi cult it has been, and how excited and hopeful she is to have the opportunity to move forward following CDC guidelines off ering a safe movie entertainment option for people to enjoy.

New CDC protocols in place include 25% capacity seating, temperature checks conducted with touchless thermometers and hand sanitizing station in the lobby for anyone to use. All patrons must wear a mask when entering the theater. Masks should be worn by all patrons except when eating or drinking. Social Distancing protocols have been put in place in the theater including socially distance seating. In between show times the auditorium, bathrooms and lobby will be sanitized. All employees will be temperature checked and are required to wear face mask and clear face shield as well as gloves while working. Additionally, an upgraded air filtration system has been installed.

Moviegoers should feel comfortable attending movies with the new safety measures in place.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said, ”Throughout the re-opening, we were getting safer and safer. The Bellmore Movies survived the Spanish flu, and it has survived COVID.”

The Bellmore Movies and Showplace is the oldest operating movie theatre on Long Island and was originally a silent film movie house in the early 1900’s. Sister theatre, Malverne Cinema & Art Center located at 350 Hempstead Avenue in Malverne opened originally on May 26, 1947 with their first film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” After being closed due Covid-19, they are reopening with the same film.
