COVID-19 Pandemic Restrictions Lifted as Vaccinations Progress And Cases Decline On May 3 Governor Cuomo announced that beginning on May 19 pandemic restrictions will be lifted in most industries as a result of vaccination progress and COVID-19 cases decline. Social distancing, masks and other health protocols will still apply.

Business capacity limits will be replaced with maintaining six feet of social distancing. In New York outdoor social gatherings increase to 500 people on May 10 and indoor social gatherings limits increase to 250 on May 19. This will apply across commercial settings including retail, food services, gym and fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops and other personal care services as well as houses of worship.

Outdoor residential gathering limit is removed and indoor residential limits increases to 50 people on May 19.

Large-scale indoor venue capacity increases to 30% and large scale outdoor venue capacity increased to 33% on May 19. This applies to outdoor music concerts, live entertainment, sports games and more. For events in excess of the social gathering limits individuals must present proof of vaccination or recent negative test.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in response to New York State lifting capacity restrictions , “The upcoming lifting of capacity restrictions is a historic and hardearned milestone in our quest to defeat COVID-19. Our goal in Nassau County has been to vaccinate as many people possible as fast as possible so that we could fully reopen and return to our normal lives.

With 7 out of 10 adults who’ve received at least one vaccine dose in

Nassau County, I’m proud that we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the State. As vaccination numbers continue to grow and new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to rapidly decline – now is the time to reopen. Nassau is ready to reopen – our residents are ready, our businesses and downtowns are ready – let’s do this.”

Business is Blooming The COVID-19 pandemic has been very difficult for all of us. Our lives and livelihoods have been turned upside down. The Governor has finally scheduled the lifting of many COVID-19 restrictions. Vaccines appointments are no longer difficult to schedule. All New York residents 16+ are now eligible for the vaccine and can schedule an appointment through a link from the Nassau County website https://www.nassaucountyny. gov/vaccine.

If you are looking for something to do outdoors, the spring weather gives us an many more options "In and Around" town. The Merrick Community Clean Up Crew has been busy cleaning up in Merrick. If you would like to volunteer they will be cleaning up again on Sunday, May 16.

The Town of Hempstead Parks & Recreation 2021 brochure is now available. Look for the free neighborhood concert series schedule, fitness classes, special interest workshops and more. You are sure to find something that will entertain everyone in your family.

OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST

Marilyn Guller-Cohen INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup (half a stick) butter, melted • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar • 1 loaf brioche or challah, cut into 1 1/2-inch slices • 8 eggs, slightly beaten • 1 cup whole milk • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped • 1/8 teaspoon salt • Maple syrup and powdered sugar for topping (optional) In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and melted butter and pour on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange slices of bread in the baking dish, overlapping if necessary. Combine milk, eggs, vanilla, salt, cinnamon and ginger

in a bowl and pour evenly over bread slices. Sprinkle chopped pecans over bread slices. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 4-12 hours.

In the morning, take the casserole out of the fridge for at least 10 minutes while you are preheat your oven to 350°F. Bake casserole for 30-35 minutes. If top starts browning too quickly, loosely cover with foil for the last 10 minutes or so to keep the casserole from drying out. Remove casserole from oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese • 2 eggs • 2 cups milk • 3 cups Bisquick • 2 med. onions , chopped and sautéed until soft in 2 tbsp butter or marg.

• 6 tbsp butter or margarine, melted • 5-6 tbsp. poppy seeds In large bowl , mix Bisquick, eggs, milk,

sautéed onions and 1 cup grated cheese.

Pour into well-greased 9x13-inch pan.

Top with rest of cheese. Sprinkle with poppy seed. Drizzle with remaining 4tbsp melted butter or margarine.

Bake at 30-35 minutes at 400degrees until brown. It can be served with sour cream and frozen berries, if you wish. It will make a lovely brunch addition served alongside pasta salad.

McDonough Pet Food Drive continues until May 15 Assemblyman Dave McDonough’s (R,C,I-Merrick) annual Pet Food Drive is continuing until May 15 and his office is actively seeking donations. The drive, which is running from March 15 - May 15 this year, aims to lift the burden of financial challenges pet owners are facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our pets are family,” said McDonough. “Unfortunately, many pet owners are facing financial difficulties during the pandemic and are unable to afford the cost of pet food. I encourage everyone who can afford it to please donate pet food today to help more pets stay at home with their families and out of shelters.”

All pet food must be unopened and in its original packaging. No opened bags, ripped bags or loose pet food can be accepted. The most needed

items are 5 or 10 pound bags of dog food and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys. McDonough will also be collecting food for all animals including hamsters, fish and ferrets.

Donations will be collected from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m Monday through Friday at McDonough’s District Office at 404 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore, NY 11710.

5 Tips to Protect Seniors from Financial Scams Right Now Social isolation among seniors is not only linked to numerous negative health consequences like depression and cardiovascular disease, but it’s also a primary contributing factor in financial exploitation and scams. Estimated to affect one in 10 older adults and cost billions annually, the threat of elder financial fraud is pervasive, and especially so right now.

With seniors more isolated than ever due to the pandemic and stimulus checks being sent to millions of Americans nationwide, experts suggest that seniors and their families be extra vigilant.

“Scammers look for key time periods where money and private financial information are in motion. Not only is IRS fraud one of the most common and successful types of scams that exists, as a general rule, additional money equates to additional fraud,” says Ron Long, head of Aging Client Services at Wells Fargo.

“Scammers are banking on the fact that many seniors are apart from families and friends due to COVID-19. When someone is alone, physically or socially, they often miss out on the added benefit of a second pair of eyes and ears.”

Compounding the risks associated with isolation is the number of seniors who feel their chances of falling victim to a financial scam is unlikely. According to a recent Wells Fargo study conducted by The Harris Poll, 69 percent of all seniors age 60 and above believe they’re not likely to be susceptible to a financial scam, despite nearly all seniors (97 percent) acknowledging that older people are very or somewhat susceptible to becoming a victim. When asked about their peers, the poll found that 47 percent of all seniors knew someone who had already fallen victim to a scam.

“The results indicate what most of us want — the ability to age relatively unaffected from the realities associated with aging,” says Dr. Marti DeLiema, a gerontologist and consultant for Wells Fargo’s Aging Client Services. “The problem is that when someone doesn’t feel they’re at risk, they’re unlikely to take precaution.”

To better protect seniors from elder fi-

nancial fraud and abuse, consider these tips from Wells Fargo: 1. Don’t wait for a crisis. Seniors should speak with trustworthy family members about financial plans, as well as consult them when something doesn’t feel right.

2. Stay up-to-date. Seniors and families should draft and periodically update legal documents such as wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney.

3. Automate. Seniors should consider signing up for direct deposit, automatic bill pay and large transaction alerts.

4. Prioritize security. Seniors should keep checks and credit cards locked away, and update passwords when information is compromised. They should also carefully review credit reports, account statements and bills for unusual activity or charges.

5. Be aware. Families can help seniors stay aware of the latest and most common scams, as well as help them identify potential red flags, including: • Alleged emergency situations involving family members, often grandchildren, requiring immediate payment.

• Lottery winnings requiring upfront cash payment for taxes and other fees.

• Phone calls from alleged government agencies, such as Social Security, threatening arrest or penalties.

Paint Your Way To A Renewed Home

Spring is the perfect time to take a good look at your home, assess for damages and create a wish list of improvements.

Start at the curb and look around the entire house. Has time changed your view on the curb appeal of your home?

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School art teachers Carissa Roche, Sarah Ritchie and Vanessa Albaneze are proud to announce that their respective students Annemarie Cabrera, Anna Varveris, Madison Yeh were chosen for the prestigious annual Heckscher Museum's Long Island's Best exhibition.

Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their work in a museum.

Along with the honor of being chosen for the exhibit, Cabrera received the Firefly Gallery's award for "Next Generation" and Yeh's artwork was chosen to be in an extend-

ed exhibit after the museum's exhibit at Mitchells Department Store in Huntington from May 25 through June 27.

Students were challenged to create works of art inspired by a piece they viewed at Heckscher. The museum chose 83 students this year from approximately 331 entries from 56 high schools. Guests can schedule a visit to see this exhibition in person.

Science takes flight at Levy Lakeside

Students in Mrs. Savastano’s class at Levy Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick School District recently completed a science unit on the life cycle of butterflies. The students first placed tiny caterpillars into cups with food and witnessed the caterpillar’s transformation into a chrysalis.

Students then decorated their own butterfly box and checked on their chrysalides daily.

When the butterflies emerged from their chrysalis, the students watched the butterflies take flight in the school garden, alongside fellow students from Mrs. Alogna’s, Mrs. Kassnove’s and Miss Parodi’s classes.

Doctors Answer Patient Questions About COVID Vaccination The American Medical Association (AMA) is urging Americans to get vaccinated as soon as they’re eligible and continue precautions against COVID-19 infection. But patients have many questions.

“For more than a year, physicians and public health officials have asked us to mask up, physically distance and do all we can to stop the spread of COVID-19 in an effort to save lives while scientists developed vaccines to help bring us back to normal,” says AMA President, Susan R. Bailey M.D. “With vaccines here and available to all Americans over 16, it’s your turn.”

Here are the AMA’s answers to top patient questions.

• How do we know COVID-19 vaccines are safe? COVID-19 vaccines were tested in large clinical trials with participants of different races, ages, ethnicities and medical conditions to ensure they meet safety standards. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed all trial safety data before authorizing vaccines for emergency use and are continuing to monitor their safety to ensure even very rare side effects are identified.

• Which vaccine should I get? Three vaccines are now available in the United States: those made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Pharmaceuticals. All are safe and highly effective at preventing severe COVID-19 illness, hospitalizations and death. The vaccines were studied at different times, in different countries and under different conditions, making comparisons difficult. However, the best vaccine is the first one available to you.

• Should I get the vaccine if pregnant or breastfeeding? There isn’t definitive data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women, but no untoward effects have been reported. Data suggest when pregnant individuals contract COVID-19, they have increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death, along with risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. All pregnant individuals should have an opportunity to receive a vaccination. If you have questions, speak with your physician and make decisions based on risk of exposure to COVID-19.

• How do I know when I’m eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine? As of April

19, all people age 16 and up in every state are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Additional information about eligibility and timeline can be found at your local public health department website found at www.cdc.gov/publichealthgateway/healthdirectories/. Vaccination information changes quickly, so check back frequently.

• Will COVID-19 vaccines be available for young children? Vaccines aren’t currently authorized for anyone under 16, as only adults participated in clinical trials. As trials are completed in younger populations, vaccines may become available.

• Once I’m vaccinated, can I stop wearing masks and practicing physical distancing? The CDC has phased out certain prevention measures for fully vaccinated people allowing them to resume some lower-risk activities. The CDC guidance allows fully vaccinated people in non-health care settings to visit other fully vaccinated people indoors without masks or physical distancing.

They no longer need to wear a mask outdoors while walking, running, hiking or biking alone, or when in small gatherings, including with members of their own households. However, masks are still necessary in crowded outdoor venues like sports stadiums, the CDC says.

Additionally, fully vaccinated people should continue taking precautions — wearing masks, physical distancing and adhering to other prevention measures — when in public and when visiting unvaccinated people at increased risk for severe disease or who have an unvaccinated household member at increased risk. The School and Community Leadership classes of Kennedy, Mepham, and Calhoun high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District worked collaboratively with ambassadors and students in Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools and the Meadowbrook Alternative Program to launch the One Voice, One Message Virtual Races to benefit the Community Cupboard.

“We were outside with the students from MAP and the PREP Academy on Friday to kick off with a lap around the track,” explained Principal Susan Ellinghaus.

At the high schools, students set up booths with information flyers, spirit wear, goody bags and more to encourage registration.

Students, staff, and community members will have the opportunity to register for a 5K Run, Youth 1M Run, Sprint Duathlon 5K Run/15M Bike/5K Run, 30M Bike, Youth Duathlon 1M Run/4M Bike/1M Run and/or a Youth 5K Bike.

Participants will be able to record their

time independently during the month of May. Registration will also include a T-shirt while supplies last. Winners will be determined in a wide variety of categories.

How the ‘Dream Vacation’ Has Changed for Americans The pandemic has changed the way we work, learn and socialize, so it’s no surprise that it’s also changed the way we think about travel. One thing is certain, as the vaccine rollout continues, globetrotters worldwide are eager to return to their regularly scheduled travel.

A new survey from global accommodations search platform trivago reveals not only a widespread desire to travel, but changes in the kind of trips we wish to take. Whereas 62% of Americans would travel for pleasure and fun pre-pandemic, future trips will likely have an increased emphasis on wellness and seeing family and friends -- they’ll also be closer to home.

Indeed, the very concept of the “dream vacation” has changed, with the typical idea of a big trip or vacation planned ahead and saved for on hiatus. With certain travel restrictions making it difficult to plan in advance and the separation caused by lockdowns, today, the number one choice for a “dream vacation” among survey respondents was a chance to spend “time with the family and

Calhoun Boys Cross-Country Capture County Championship

After shuttering ahead of their spring 2020 season, the Sanford H. Calhoun High School boys cross-country team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District made it their goal to capture the Class II Nassau County championships this year — and they achieved just that on April 17.

After many months of training, the Colt team - with no apparent races in the future just yet - adopted a quote to train by, “hold the vision and trust the process."

“This quote brought to the team by one of the team captains, Lucas Ahrens, helped to remind us not to lose focus even during the toughest times,” explained coach David Hendler.

From the first race, the team was ready. John Schwab led the way with a 16:25 5K. The team continued on to defeat Jericho, Elmont and Long Beach.

“Sophomores Matt Belmonte and Gavin Giordano stepped it up anytime a higher place was needed,” added Hendler.

With the return of players Alex Rosario and Joe Bilardello, the team really

started to come together.

“Completing the regular season undefeated and capturing the division and conference championships made Calhoun the team to beat in the counties,” Hendler explained.

Captain Logan Bader dropped close to 20 seconds and placed sixth, nearly what the team needed to clinch the win.

“Others who greatly contributed to the team’s success included Aidan “Thor” Kopelman who placed 16th and freshman Logan Schaeffler, who placed third in the county race with a time of 16:32.55,” noted Hendler.

The final score was Calhoun 34, Manhasset 76, Roslyn 85, Valley Stream North 108, Jericho 108 and Bethpage 119; with the lowest score winning.

Their vision had come true.

Awards included All-Conference titles for Lucas Ahrens, Dan Isals, Joe Bilardello, Jonathan Sferratore and Will Hughes. All-County titles for Gavin Giordano, Matthew Belmonte, Aidan Kopelman, Alexander Rosario, John Schwab, Logan Bader and Logan Schaeffler.
