Butterflies in Mayfair Explore the pleasures of the Nectar Dome: Butterfly Biosphere hatches in Grosvenor Square this September. Free to visit from 5 – 15 September 2019, the Butterfly Biosphere: Pleasures of the Nectar Dome, created by multi-sensory visionaries Bompas & Parr, will give visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the colourful and enchanting world of butterflies. The world’s first Lepidopterarium, combining butterfly ecology, nectar tasting and an abundance of photo opportunities with the butterflies, the impressive dome will be lit with pink lighting and feature shimmering, iridescent décor to match the butterflies’ vibrant colour scheme. On arrival, visitors will be invited to try a sip of nectar made using fruit nectar from flowering trees and say cheers to butterflies, the unsung heroes of pollination. This will be followed by an experiential walk to the Biosphere where a Wildlife Guardian will guide guests into the enchanting world of butterflies, advising them on how best to appreciate the fascinating creatures. Guests will also receive a pair of rainbow spectacles that will enhance their butterfly vision and be able to sit on a throne for a selfie that makes
them look like they have a pair of brightly-coloured wings. The experience will also highlight the fact that London’s butterfly population is in trouble - having declined by 76% over the last four decades - and help capital dwellers learn how to help their winged friends. Guests will be greeted by a “wildlife guardian”, be able to donate to butterfly conservation initiatives, watch them hatch and develop a newfound appreciation of their essential role in nature and how to take a crucial role in ensuring their future survival. Harry Parr, co-founder of Bompas and Parr, says: “Butterflies are the unsung heroes of pollination, so it’s about time Londoners had a place to go and celebrate them by saying cheers with a glass of their favourite drink - nectar. And taking the odd beautiful butterfly picture along the way as well.” Butterfly Biosphere: Pleasures of the Nectar Dome is open from Thurs 5th September - Sunday 15th September, 10am - 7pm. It is located in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair. For more information, please visit www.mayfairandbelgravia. com or follow @Mayfair_LDN or @bompasandparr on Instagram.

London Design Festival London Design Festival returns this month across venues and institutes all across the capital from 14 - 22 September. Established in 2003 by Sir John Sorrell CBE and Ben Evans CBE, London Design Festival celebrates and promotes London as the design capital of the world. Earning the reputation as a key calendar moment of London’s autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival, the festival attracts the greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to the capital, in a citywide celebration. Highlights of this year’s festival include a new installation by Sam Jacob within the grand entrance to the V&A to highlight the need to rethink the global plastics system; to consider its full lifetime journey; and to design future-use into every product. Titled Sea Things, the concept will take the form of a large scale two-way mirrored cube suspended above visitors with an animated
motion graphic internally reflected to an infinity that seems both as wide as the ocean and as large as the challenges we face. The project has an aim to evoke a powerful sense of emotion, so visitors come away feeling empowered with a better understanding of their role alongside technology and design to make the world a more sustainable place. Elsewhere, the Global Design Forum is the Festival’s curated thought leadership programme, celebrating design and the minds shaping its future. The full 2019 programme has been announced and will explore the issues affecting the design industry itself but more importantly, how design can pave the way for workable solutions to some of the modern world’s most demanding challenges.

Open City Documentary Festival The ninth edition of Open City Documentary Festival will take place across several Central London venues between 4-10th September and promises to be an unmissable event for all London culture vultures. As ever, the festival will consist of international contemporary and retrospective non-fiction film, audio and cross media, as well as filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, workshops, networking and parties. This year’s festival highlights include Luke Lorentzen’s unmissable award-winning documentary feature Midnight Family, which follows a family trying to make a living operating a private
ambulance in Mexico City whilst shining a light on the dangers of privatised healthcare. London based politically charged artist and writer Laura Grace Ford will present An Act Of Unforgetting, a programme of rarely seen radical British TV documentaries which make visible London’s unofficial and unrecognised narratives. Also, part of the festival’s special events series; a thrilling walking tour seeks to reveal the hidden structures of the ‘Ring of Steel’ – a vast security installation around the City of London’s financial district that mirrors the boundary line of the ancient Roman structures of the London Wall.

St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival 2019 This September marks the return of the Classic Boat Festival at St Katharine Docks, its eleventh and most impressive outing yet since its inception in 1998. This year’s festival, which will run from the 6-8th September from 11am - 6pm, will offer an impressive display of around 40 beautiful classic boats and a wide array of unique waterside attractions in Central London’s only marina. An oasis in the heart of London, St Katharine Docks provides the perfect setting for a journey through time admiring the festival’s historic vessels, chatting with their passionate owners and even climbing aboard. This year’s boats will include a significant proportion of the surviving ‘little ships’ which rescued 336,000 trapped Allied soldiers on the beaches at Dunkirk in 1940, as well as the Lady Daphne - one of the last wooden barges in Britain with a passenger license. The Lady Daphne will offer festival-goers a unique chance to tour the river Thames and relive the days when such vessels dominated London’s trade, with the tour including a special raising of Tower Bridge as part of the journey. The marina will also be awash with activities, including stand-up paddleboarding, SKD talks on the powerful stories of the classic boats and the colourful history of the docks, and MYO crafting workshops for adults with food supplied by KERB, one of most London’s most celebrated street-food brands. Throughout the weekend there will be live music from the Sea Shanty Singers on the Saturday and the Thames Youth Jazz Orchestra on the Sunday.

LUMINOR DUE In keeping with the genetics of the Luminor Due family, Panerai remains unconventional in its attitude and its predisposition. These new watches have been mechanically redesigned in terms of size and consequently maintain the Manufacture’s innovative ethos. Naturally inclined to change, today the Luminor Due with its new content is acquiring a more pronounced identity. Leading the way, on the one hand there are three new models sharing the brushed titanium of the case and the blue satiné soleil finish of the dial. On the other hand there are three updated models of varied character, embodying a consistent array of style and versatility. All of them are united in being fitted with mechanical Manufacture movements and quickly changeable straps. Each one is original, and therefore part of a new chapter in the modern history of the brand. Substantially thinner while completely respecting the classic design the three new models offer a perfect historic compromise with the appearance of three elegant proportions, which confirm their innovative identity through an iconic dial on which only the Panerai logo appears. With the clear message of its unequivocal personality, its formal sophistication and its eclectic Italian style, the Luminor Due is continuing its bold exploration of unknown territories and through structural improvements
its range of features is becoming wider. In terms of materials, a Luminor Due 38mm appears for the first time in titanium, for combinations, a Luminor Due 42mm is the first model of its size to associate a titanium case with an automatic mechanical movement and as far as solutions are concerned, the Luminor Due GMT Power reserve 45mm is Panerai’s first “45 mm” watch, and it has an interchangeable strap with the Quick Release system. Distinctive refinement, expressed in a more evidently informal character, is however the key to interpreting the three new Luminor Due watches perfected in the 38 and 42 mm sizes and offered with a stainless steel or GoldtechTM case. Common to all are the radically revised dial designs, sophisticated and elegant with printed Arabic numerals and numbers while fully realising Panerai’s iconic level of visual language. The Manufacture movement is strictly mechanical, rigorously following Panerai’s demanding specifications, but from now on it will exclusively have automatic winding. This requirement panerai.com

Ceramic Faced Fifty Fathoms
is dictated by practical considerations, the need to reconcile the watch’s physical and aesthetic design with the challenge of dimensions, the main characteristic of the collection. This was the reason behind the introduction of the new P.900 Calibre with its thickness of 4.2 mm - one of the thinnest automatic movements produced at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. It is the first Panerai automatic watch of this diameter to have both a date display and a power reserve of three days, a fundamental solution it shares with the Luminor Due 38mm and 42mm. Even greater mechanical sophistication is to be found in the P.4002 Calibre used in the Luminor Due GMT Power Reserve 45mm. Twin time zones with dial-side power reserve indication and a 24-hour display with am/ pm indicator are incorporated in a movement just 4.8 mm thick. Genetically predisposed to change, these new Luminor Due watches are supplied with interchangeable straps equipped with the Quick Release system.
Blancpain is reinterpreting its Fifty Fathoms, the iconic diver’s watch that has inspired the entire genre since its launch in 1953. The 2019 edition retains the sporty and distinguished character of its peers, to which it adds a touch of chic and high-tech with a red gold case and a ceramic dial. The Fifty Fathoms is one of Blancpain’s inescapable models. Its roots in history are such that the Manufacture makes it a point of honour to continue developing it in such a way as to satisfy every expectation of diving and water sports enthusiasts. This year, Blancpain has opted to introduce a stylish version by using a precious case in satin-brushed red gold. For the first time in the collection, the dial of this new product is attired in blue ceramic. Through this unique combination of materials and colours, Blancpain achieves a bold double alliance. Already used by Blancpain in the creation of bezels for its Bathyscaphe models, technical ceramics offer a multitude of advantages. Their hardness six times greater than that of steel - endows them with exceptional qualities, including remarkable stability and longevity. Although particularly complex to produce and machine, this material has been chosen by Blancpain because of the chromatic depth is serves to achieve. The new Fifty Fathoms Automatic is thus adorned with a cobalt-like shimmer featuring a pleasing contrast between the sunburst dial centre and the matt chapter ring. The DNA of the collection remains identifiable at first glance: numerals, hour-markers and hands coated with luminescent material, a slightly curved scratchproof sapphire crystal and a ratcheted unidirectional rotating bezel recall the origins of this watch. Dictated by a long experience of diving, these decisive choices are the guarantee of perfect visibility in all circumstances. Featuring a 45 mm diameter case and water-resistant to 300 metres, the new Fifty Fathoms Automatic beats to the rhythm of the 1315 movement. Stemming from a lengthy quest for precision and performance, it has been specially designed for sports watches. Blancpain has equipped it in this instance with a very dense red gold oscillating weight ensuring high winding efficiency for an optimal five-day power reserve when the watch is fully wound. This rotor is cut out as a nod to the history of the Fifty Fathoms, since this geometry made it more supple at the time in order to protect the movement from potential impacts. Resolutely technical with its ceramic dial, as well as luxurious with its red gold case and the meticulous finishing of its movement, the new Fifty Fathoms Automatique is teamed with a blue calf leather strap, an additional detail evoking the inseparable link between Blancpain and the splendours of the sea bed. blancpain.com

Five Year Anniversary Christopher Ward have launched the 100-piece C60 Apex Limited Edition to honour Calibre SH21’s fifth birthday. An innovator in the Swiss watch industry, Christopher Ward continues to delight and inspire with the launch of its 100-piece C60 Apex Limited Edition dive watch. Five years on from the initial release of Calibre SH21, Christopher Ward’s in-house movement, the intricate craftsmanship and engineering is revealed through the C60 Apex Limited Edition’s skeletonised front and rear, representing the pinnacle of the brand’s horological prowess today. The first and only commercially viable movement created by a British watch brand in 50 years, Calibre SH21’s twin barrel construction provides 120 hours of timekeeping when fully wound. Every SH21 has also been certified by COSC, meaning not only a timing tolerance of just -4/+6 seconds per day, but each sits within the top 6% of all Swiss-made watches for accuracy. Mike France, CEO and Co-founder of Christopher Ward, comments: “With the first of the Apex series, the C7, we introduced a semi-skeletonised architecture to expose the beauty and technical expertise of Calibre SH21. The C60 Apex continues and expands this approach and is the first Christopher Ward dive watch with an exhibition caseback.” Water-resistant to 300m even with the presence of an exhibition caseback - a first for the manufacture - Christopher Ward teamed
up with Swiss skeleton watch specialists Armin Strom to help showcase as much of Calibre SH21 as possible. Most prominent is a hollowed-out aluminium and tungsten rotor, finished in orange, along with a skeletonised bridge that reveals the engineering at work inside. The same approach has been applied to the C60 Apex’s front - SH21’s exposed hour wheel has received a circular brushed finish, with other sections cutaway for optimum effect. But it’s the power reserve indicator residing at nine o’clock that will grab the wearer’s attention most, an orange indicator hand rests upon an 3D bridge, with polished screws securing it against a ring around the edge of the dial. Sporting a powerful navy blue, orange and steel colour palette, the C60 Apex is a blend of colour, texture and depth. Located on the side of its sleek and sophisticated ‘light-catcher’ case, a helium release valve reinforces the C60 Apex as a diving tool to be relied upon. X1 GL C1 Super-LumiNova® - the best possible lume Christopher Ward could source - has then been applied to the C60 Apex’s multi-faceted hands and indexes, along with the markings and numerals found on its unidirectional ZrO² ceramic countdown bezel, allowing it to be read in the darkest of seas. 100-Piece Limited Edition C60 Apex £3,495

Project Z13 Meticulous and poetic, angular and smooth, powerful and comfortable, Project Z13 is steeped in paradoxes. This is a timepiece with an architectural structure that is expertly orchestrated to simultaneously project an impression of asymmetry and order. Featuring a moon phase display and a retrograde date, a first for the collection, its supporting structures rely on the aesthetic language of mechanics. Still made of Zalium™ with a high-mech spirit, Project Z13 continues on its radical path, confirming that Harry Winston’s Zalium™ timepieces can continue to surprise and transform. Project Z13 reaffirms the fundamental design principles behind the Project Z collection with precision and force. While architectural structure is one of the founding features of the collection, it reaches new heights with this timepiece. Supported by transverse arms, two reading elements occupy the top and bottom of Project Z13. At twelve o’clock, the traditional openworked dial, with its excentered hours and minutes, stands out as a bold design element in the collection. At six o'clock, the House of Harry Winston presents a moon phase display for the very first time in this collection committed to Zalium™. Isolated to better stand out, this feature appears to be suspended and independent thanks to its graphic design. The image selected for the moon is an aesthetic hallmark of the House and an affirmation of its symbols. In order to make the first moon phase display in the Project Z collection as unique as possible, the House opted for its Shuriken symbol, a star that has been part of the Project Z design vocabulary from the very beginning. And to round out this interpretation of Harry Winston's exclusive moon, the design is not circular, but dodecagonal in form. Its 12 facets hug the cutout of the moon cover, the fixed section that reveals the display of the moon's crescents. Through this design, the moon display reflects the dual nature of Project Z13: a timepiece as smooth as it is meticulous. The HW3202 caliber also has a retrograde date, a display feature that is used repeatedly in the collection. Its wide range occupies the entire lower half of the dial. In addition to these functional areas, which are intended to provide information at a glance, the HW3202 caliber is visible through the large openings afforded by the supporting structures of the dial. This reveals the caliber in all its splendor, enabling the finishes of the timepiece to be admired down to the smallest detail, including the radial Co tes de Gene ves motif. A central theme in the Project Z collection, the materials used in Project Z13 take center stage. First, the 42.2 mm case is made entirely of Zalium™, the light and powerful signature Harry Winston alloy, whose initial provided the name for the collection. In addition, for the first time this Project Z timepiece also uses carbon elements. The four arms that hold the moon cover and the outer section of the chapter ring are fitted with carbon fiber inserts. harrywinston.com
This blue, a symbol of the House of Harry Winston, is frequently highlighted in Project Z. For the thirteenth edition, this colour is present on the hands, the background of the starry moon disc, the date area, the Harry Winston emerald located at twelve o’clock and the elements surrounding the excentered dial. Finally, it is also found in the topstitching of the black rubber-and-calfskin strap. This particular blue is lively and vibrant, embodying the energy that is unique to Project Z. Just like its predecessors, Project Z13 is a sporty model. This complicated timepiece is designed for people with an active lifestyle who are also concerned about ergonomics and comfort. In terms of exclusivity, this timepiece is limited to only 300 pieces, a feature that has been common among the Project Z timepieces for thirteen years.

ACQUA DI PARMA
Signatures of the Sun the art of perfume, light and discovery
True art has the power to open up new perspectives, to transform things that we think we already know into original experiences that excite us and resonate deep in our souls as if they were happening for the first time. Acqua di Parma has been synonymous with the art of perfume for more than one hundred years, representing the artisanal process of selecting the finest ingredients and distilling them with masterly skill. The passion for creating olfactory compositions that vibrate with emotion and convey something unique. Like Colonia - the historic maison’s masterpiece - a timeless, lively and modern fragrance that emits a bright and authentic vision of Italian style. The “Frutti d‘Oro” - golden fruits - so carefully captured in the fragrance, call to mind sun-kissed landscapes, the light given off by a smile, by a gesture, by that ethereal and natural unmistakably Italian elegance. All the Acqua di Parma fragrances, even the most unusual scents, embody the traditional heart of Colonia and its innate compositional balance. And so, Signatures of the Sun was born. The sublime expression of an art of perfume whose expressive shades are born from light and discovery. The ingredients, selected from all over the world for the preciousness they encapsulate, represent the leitmotif running through the new collection. Each one is distilled by Acqua di Parma until the purest essence is obtained; each one is the protagonist of a fragrance that reveals itself to be nothing less than an olfactory epiphany. Each ingredient is filtered through the acquadiparma.com
HEALTH & BEAUTY sensory prism of Colonia, bringing light to it and gifting the Sun to each new fragrance. Signatures of the Sun is like breathing a familiar ingredient for the very first time. This stunning new collection encompasses ingredients from around the world including: Amber, Oak, Osmanthus, Yuzu, Leather, Sandalwood, Camellia, Oud, Vanilla and Sakura, allowing you to embark on an olfactory journey of a lifetime. A fragrance for every moment and every mood, this collection not only highlights the very best of these incredible ingredients, but offers up the opportunity for you to engage directly with your scent and create something truly personal and unique through distinctive combinations. Signatures of the Sun not only brings to light renowned ingredients from the fragrance world, but delivers some lesser known and understood scents that might just awaken your olfactory senses like never before.
Ambra Ambergris is an ingredient of natural origin created by marine mammals. Almost impossible to find, due to its spontaneous formation, mainly found on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Normandy and England, and as far away as the shores of Madagascar and Japan. Known for its therapeutic qualities and aphrodisiac powers, in times gone by it was used as incense and as a tincture in medical preparations. Marco Polo brought it along the Silk Road to Venice, where the master perfume makers, fascinated by its warm pungent scents, added it in very small doses, given its great value, to perfumes intended for the nobility. Even today, this natural essence, still almost impossible to find, is among the most valuable and sought-after ingredients in high-class perfume production. In Ambra, the clear, light scents of Colonia are beautifully paired with the salty, musky ones given off
by ambergris. Opening with all the freshness of the essential oil of orange, bergamot and petitgrain, you enjoy a balanced start that merges with the warm, voluptuous heart, where the woody accents of nagarmotha and cedarwood meet the delicacy of the rose. The earthy, musky scents of patchouli herald the grand finale, with the unveiling of the tincture of ambergris in its deep, intense sensuality, enhanced by sandalwood and musk, and warmed by soft vanilla. A rare and age-old essence is reborn in an exciting and original radiance.
Leather The leather accord has been part of high-class perfume production for a long time, but Acqua di Parma succeeds in producing a surprise with its very special interpretation of great evocative intensity. A powerful and aromatic olfactory creation, which immediately brings to mind that heady fragrance of hides and leather crafted by hand with passion in traditional Tuscan workshops. An original leather accord to be discovered in all its sensory richness with a citrus-flavoured opening inspired by Colonia, extolling the freshness of lemon from Sicily and orange oil with the intriguing raspberry accord. A multi-faceted start develops naturally in the radiant, aromatic heart of honeysuckle, petitgrain and red thyme only to emerge with the heady accord of leather from the base, where birch oil, used in traditional hide curing, surprisingly combines with the aromatic scents of cistus and olibanol resins. An art-constructed, almost tactile mixture, which vibrates in all its shades when it meets the warm, woody accents of guaiac oil from Paraguay and cedarwood from Morocco.

ACQUA DI PARMA Quercia With its majestic foliage and its strong, mighty trunk, the oak has, for thousands of years, symbolised primordial strength and generosity. Worshipped as king of trees or tree of life, it is also considered to be a symbol of strength of spirit. The ancient Romans called it the tree of Jupiter, and anyone who showed particular bravery was awarded with a crown of oak branches. A variety of soft scented moss grows on its bark, from which one of the most highly-valued ingredients in high-class perfume production is obtained: oakmoss absolute. Acqua di Parma extols the magnetic fascination of the oak in this powerful and generous fragrance. In the clear, sparkling opening, the golden fruits of Colonia return. Bergamot, lemon and petit-grain, crossed by the lively tones of pink pepper, herald the aromatic and vibrant heart where cardamom, geranium and cedarwood are to be found. A crescendo of emotions which becomes complete in the elegant, intense finale. Oakmoss absolute recalls the clear, radiant start, revealing all its olfactory magnificence. Mossy and woody sensations that combine with the sweet, enveloping tones of tonka bean and the warm, refined accents of patchouli.
flowering accents of neroli. Already at the outset of the heart of this surprising Eau de Parfum the warm, voluptuous scent of osmanthus can begin to be noticed, which then merges with the sensuality of the peony and the animal scents of ambrette. Finally, the osmanthus is revealed with all its potency in the base of the fragrance, enriched with the enveloping, aromatic scents of patchouli.
Oud It is called Wood of the Gods and King of incense. Its opulent and mysterious fragrance recalls the spirit of the Middle East and its wealth of perfumes. Agarwood oil, also known as Oud, is obtained by means of a delicate manual procedure from the resins of the Aquilaria tree. In Arab countries its very rare essence is at the heart of ancient welcoming ceremonies. The heads of houses burn this precious resin in elegantly decorated copper braziers and all around a warm, vibrant perfume pervades, welcoming guests. Here, the citrus spirit of Colonia and the opulence of agarwood oil are combined in masterful fashion. A subtle harmony of contrasts from which arises a unique fragrance. The first sensation is clear and transparent, like the radiant tones of orange and bergamot, then to discover the whole sensuality of the spicy heart. The aromatic accents of Russian coriander and the warmth of Amyris oil herald the persistent opulence of Agarwood oil, which gradually gives off all its olfactory richness. Endless shades that find a refined reference at the base, with the elegant leather accord, the precious cedarwood and sandalwood, the wood and the forest tones of patchouli and the sharp scents of musk.
Osmanthus A very small, yet heavily scented flower. The small corollas of osmanthus are less than a centimetre in size and blossom for a single day in the luxuriant forests of south-east Asia. In that brief moment, the silvery-white to orange-red petals give off a very strong, heady perfume. In China, the osmanthus is called “flower of happiness and is given by the bride to her new family as a wish for prosperity and welcome. According to an ancient eastern legend, the seeds of this evergreen shrub were thrown on to the earth from the lunar paradise at the wish of a god, who decided to bring well-being and harmony among human beings. Distilling the purest and most valuable essence of the osmanthus and enhancing it into a fragrance that brings out a new radiant elegance, Acqua di Parma have created a prelude that mixes the fresh, sparkling scents of green mandarin with the delicate,

beauty. The flowering of the sakura, blown by the spring breeze, is celebrated every year all over Japan. It is the spectacle of life, intense and fleeting, is a symbol of rebirth and new energy. A symbol of Japanese culture, the sakura, with its fragile and very beautiful buds, has for centuries inspired lovely paintings and marvellous haiku. Similarly, this fragrance creates a radiant, dreamy atmosphere which blossoms in spectacular fashion. The fresh, radiant tones of yellow mandarin and bergamot, crossed by the vibrant spicy accents of pink pepper, herald the flowering of the heart. A triumph of sakura buds with their delicate, fresh and long-lasting perfume and, as a perfect countermelody, the seductive tones of sambac jasmine which come to rest on the elegant base of musk. This is a shining miracle of an Eau de Parfum that envelops with lightness like the magnificent blossoming of sakura.
Yuzu A rare and highly-scented oriental citrus fruit, the Yuzu is originally from China, and today its most valued varieties are grown on the small remote Japanese island of Shikoku, a true natural paradise. Its golden peel and its delicious juice are favourites with celebrated chefs all over the world. Rich in beneficial substances, the Yuzu is considered to be a fruit of beauty. During the winter solstice in Japan, a fascinating ritual takes place: long relaxing baths in warm water where Yuzu fruits, left to float, give off precious oils and an intense, regenerating aroma. Acqua di Parma have artistically interpreted the bitter-sweet tones of this highly-prized citrus fruit, in an extraordinarily radiant
composition created for the Signatures of the Sun collection. Meeting with bergamot - one of the leading Italian golden fruits of the Acqua di Parma fragrances - the Yuzu releases all of the sun it collects in the earth where it grows. Surprisingly, the spicy touch of the Sichuan pepper lets the fragrance vibrate in a dynamic crescendo, which finds its expression in the flowering heart. A bright explosion that unites the delicate tones of mimosa, leaves of violet and jasmine with the sensuality of the lotus flower. At the base, suddenly the elegant warmth of sandalwood and the transparency of musk strike, and merge with the fresh aroma of liquorice. The packaging enclosing Signatures of the Sun is the ultimate expression of the codes and values of Acqua di Parma, visually seductive and exciting. The unmistakable cylinder-shaped box in black is elegantly enlivened by a black label with an embossed golden logo. Inside, the instantly recognisable Art Deco bottle that has always distinguished Colonia is a pleasure to see. It comes in clear glass for the freshest and most vibrant fragrances and in black for the most intense and assertive ones. And for the label, brilliant gold on a black background.

GOLF
Golf Son Gual Award winning Son Gual Golf Club is just fifteen minutes away from Palma airport making it a very popular destination for enthusiastic golfers. Family owned, it is renowned as one of the most interesting courses to play on and is every bit a championship par seventy-two course. Set in one hundred and fifty-six hectares of beautiful Mediterranean landscape and surrounded by olive trees and wildflowers, the course was completed in 2007. Created for golf in the near unspoilt style of a links course, it offers exclusive facilities of the highest standards for all golfing challenges. Blending seamlessly into the landscape, the course was designed in accordance with the principles of generosity and natural sporting elegance. Each hole at Son Gual has its own personality. Built and prepared from farmland within the hills of the Mallorca landscape, the investment by German businessman Adam Pamer has been immense. However, it is recognised as one of the best golf courses in Europe at seven thousand two hundred and forty yards long
with sixty-six bunkers and one on hole two at one hundred and sixty four yards long. Golf Son Gual has twenty-five green keepers to ensure the course is at best condition throughout the year and a fleet of the latest electric golf buggies are all there to make your experience more enjoyable. Before you take to the course a two-tiered driving range is available with a generous putting, chipping and practice area or you can just head to the first tee but be prepared as the frequently strong easterly and westerly winds need to be practiced. The first tee is set on a hill looking down across the course and here you can see at first hand the challenge before you. Designed by three-time German amateur champion, Thomas Himmel, it flows in two loops. The first nine holes are around the borders of the property and the second nine infield. The course lies between large lakes and streams, which were planned as a source of irrigation and the visually pleasing landscape architecture are designed as challenging obstacles.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served here, and
you can indulge in local tapas or treat yourself to a superb meal in the Ă la carte restaurant. Culinary delights such as Mallorquin fish and various Mediterranean dishes are created as well as traditional meat dishes. You can also opt for a light snack which is available throughout the day at the well-stocked bar. Company events are available on request and over the past twelve years companies such as Rolex, Porsche, Montblanc and others have chosen the facilities of Golf Son Gual to ensure the success of their tournaments for their clients and friends.

Club de Golf Alcanada It’s not uncommon for amateur golfers to be forced to defend their sport against those who make a wild accusation it might be dull. The non-believers will simply never experience that moment of watching your tee shot soar off into the blue skies set against a backdrop of a glorious island lighthouse. Dull? You won’t find many more satisfying experiences than that one. Welcome to Club de Golf Alcanada in the north of Mallorca - surprisingly, the only course on this fabulous island which is next to the sea. The seventh hole is the course’s signature hole, which offers the kind of postcard view you could admire for hours. It’s a downhill par-five with views all the way down to the Bay of Alcúdia and its iconic lighthouse. Group selfies are commonplace on this tee, but there is also an added bonus of a swing analysis camera, which is there to capture your tee shot. Hit a good one and enjoy it back in the clubhouse afterwards, send it on to your email to impress your friends. Scuff one a few yards and quietly dispose of your ticket when nobody is looking. But these are golfing memories to savour at Alcanada - even if your golf isn’t quite ready for the Tour. The mid-19th century lighthouse stands as proud as the club itself these days but there are plenty of breathtaking moments to enjoy. Perhaps in keeping with the owners - a certain German family by the name of Porsche, which has been known to deliver some spectacular experiences with their cars - it’s also a club with ambition. Thanks to a €700,000 revamp over the winter, all 18
greens were replaced among several other improvements. As our welcoming host - Alcanada director of golf, Kristoff Both – told us: “Very good simply wasn’t quite good enough for Alcanada”. This follows on from a host of other upgrades over the last year or so, such as a new halfway house called the Lighthouse Bar, where golfers can enjoy a mid-round break for a chilled glass of something, a light snack and to enjoy a short mid-round break. That relaxed vibe runs through the fabric at Alcanada - a club which knows its roots but has added a modern touch in all the right places - none more so than the pro shop, which carries a huge selection of modern clothing and equipment in a converted building with exposed authentic Mallorca brickwork on view. That tradition and history is epitomised in the centuries-old Mallorca clubhouse - a 19th hole brimming with style. After the round, the inviting sun terrace is the ideal spot to catch a few rays, enjoy some liquid refreshment and drink in those glorious views all over again. Around 45 minutes’ drive from Palma airport, the north of Mallorca remains relatively unspoilt in contrast to some of the mass tourism areas in other parts of the island. Of course, there is still nightlife, culture and plenty to see away from the golf course. But it is a more authentic Mallorca and well worth venturing north for some of the incredible scenery and experiences waiting to be discovered. Those who stay in the south on their visits to the island are simply missing out on so much more.

PALMA MALLORCA
Palma de Mallorca Just a 15 minute drive from the airport, Palma, Mallorca’s vibrant capital offers up a hidden secret.
Located in the south of the island and a great starting point should you wish to explore further, Palma looks out over the expansive Mediterranean sea. Instantly recognisable, the enchanting Gothic Cathedral is the conveniently placed by the seafront, leading back towards Palma’s old town which is full of historic passages, unique architecture and quirky island shops and lively restaurants. The city was named after the Roman city of Palmaria, founded around 120 BC, which still exists a metre or two beneath the ground. Next to the cathedral is L’Almudaina, a 13th century palace with spectacular gardens and behind them, the old Arab quarter containing a number of small museums and narrow streets. As you would expect with any capital, the atmosphere is lively and fun, with many bars, restaurants, landmarks and shops to explore and discover. That said, it’s easy to get lost in the melee and we have the perfect location for some laid-back luxury right in the heart of the city.
Tucked away in the pretty surrounds of Palma de Mallorca old town, would-be visitors to Palma have the opportunity of staying at their very own striking 18th-century Palace. Located in Palma’s vibrant La Lonja district, just a mere 100m from the bustling harbour, former private Palacio Can Marques has been lovingly renovated and transformed as a luxury boutique hotel. Opening its doors to the public for the first time in 250 years, the palace was built in 1760 and is considered to be one of the city’s most historic properties. As the singular palace in the neighbourhood, which was frequented by sailors and merchants who came from all over the Mediterranean Sea, Palacio Can Marques has been owned by three families over the last 300 years. It was named after the Marques family, who lived there for over 100 years, namely Antonio Marques who was the first Mayor of Palma City before German businessman Kim Schindelhauer bought the property

The unassuming facade of the building in the busy walkway reveals the breathtaking courtyard, complete with a stunning free-standing inverted staircase that leads up to the first floor of rooms and living spaces. Easily the stand-out point of the hotel, and making a fabulous impression that is unique in Mallorca, visitors can’t get enough of the stunning outside-in interiors of the impressive space. Set beneath eleven metre high ceilings, supported by gothic alabaster columns, the large 140sqm space leads on to the property’s tranquil, jungle-esque garden making this the perfect location for a spot of peace and quiet having explored the colourful city.
Letting the original architectural structure act as a point of inspiration, each room in the hotel has been uniquely designed to represent different moods and feelings. A treasure cove of unexplored spaces, rooms are aptly titled, such as Romance, which boasts a large sitting room with an antique open fireplace, original wooden ceilings, views over the garden, and a gigantic walk-in wardrobe that continues on to a huge marble bathroom, with stand-alone tub in a room that was once a kitchen in the former residence. The Ivy's Rixo Cocktails
HarvestFest at Skylight Tobacco Dock
In celebration of summer and to coincide with this year’s BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, The Ivy Kensington Brasserie has collaborated with iconic fashion brand, RIXO. Running until Tuesday, 17 September the brasserie boasts a stunning floral installation and two limited-edition cocktails, which can be enjoyed individually or alongside the restaurant’s pre-Proms set menu. RIXO, known for their iconic yet playful prints have inspired the colourful external installation which adorns both the façade of the brasserie as well as the terrace at the back of the restaurant. The bright pink Psychedelic Butterfly is a seventies-inspired abstract interpretation of an insect’s wings, magnified and coloured in a hot pink hue, whilst the Glitter Feather print is a softer and more subtle design which combines mint and cream, embellished with glitter for added texture and flair. Both designs come together to create an eye-catching display that’s effortlessly stylish. Very reasonably priced at just £24.00 per person for two courses and a RIXO inspired cocktail, the pretty menu includes the likes of Heirloom Tomato Salad, Asian Salmon; Roast Chicken with Olive Oil mash and bourguignon sauce; and Steak, Egg and Thick cut chips. There are also plenty of sides on offer including the restaurant’s famed Truffle and Parmesan chips. For dessert guests can enjoy a choice of two sweet treats or a cheese plate. Inspired by RIXO’s bright prints the two cocktails are equally as tempting. Those looking for something zingy can opt for the Psychedelic Butterfly, comprising of Plymouth Sloe Gin, Crème de Rose, pineapple juice, lime juice and topped with a gold butterfly. Those looking for something a little more refreshing Mint Cream with Beefeater Gin, fresh lime juice, Chartreuse, sugar syrup, egg white, cherry and a slice of lime. Both are priced at £9.50 so you can afford to try both! Catch the special menu while you can, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Kensington High Street, it’s the perfect late summer oasis. Turning the heaters back on for its Autumn season, the revamped destination which boasts three floors of bars, street food and more, will focus on world beer, ciders, and pumpkins. HarvestFest will see some of its croquet lawns replaced with Hay Bale Skittles which will sit alongside other seasonal games including horseshoes and apple-draughts. The diverse cocktail menu will celebrate harvest ingredients, such as apples, blackberries and pears, complemented by warming autumnal spices. The bar will also welcome back the ever-popular mulled wine. Street food stalls on the lower level will be continuing to serve up both day-time food and brunch, including the exciting new addition of bottom-less Prosecco surrounded by heated booths. Skylight will continue to expand its exciting calendar of events, playing host to regular DJ nights, parties and ticketed events including a scarily good Halloween celebration. The Corner Restaurant
Located in the glamorous surrounds of the Women’s Designer Galleries on level 2 in Selfridges, the aptly named Corner Restaurant serves an all day menu of seasonal Mediterranean inspired dishes that are perfect for any time of the day. The 56 seat restaurant, complete with a beautiful marble bar, has recently launched a new menu designed by newly appointed Head Chef, Grant Clark (previously of The Breslin and Hearth in New York). In his first venture in the UK, Clark’s new menu is guided by the seasons, with ingredients from some of the best UK producers including bread from Coombeshead Bakery, meat from Henson and Son, sustainably sourced fish and vegetables from grocery supplier to Selfridges’ Foodhall, Natoora. Clark’s nose-to-tail approach minimises food waste, with all produce being used across the entire menu in various forms. Meanwhile, the attention paid to the processes and
“low and slow” methods that build up the layers of flavour are what allows the menu to stand out. With views over Oxford Street, new menu highlights include, chicory salad with radishes, soft herbs and pecorino; roasted aubergine puffed wild rice and oven dried tomatoes; hand made bucatini with pomodoro sauce and ricotta salata; seared sea scallops with Jerusalem artichokes, Serrano ham, and celery; and grilled market fish which changes daily depending on what is available fresh. Beautifully presented and with a choice of sides such as tenderstem broccoli with garlic, chilli and anchovy; and crispy new potatoes with sauerkraut, mustard seeds and creme fraiche; there’s something for everyone. Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the brown butter panna cotta with macerated English strawberries and biscuit crumble. Elsewhere Neal’s Yard Cheese is on offer for those after something more savoury. Enjoy with a glass of NV Selfridges Selection Brut Champagne, or one of the innovative cocktails such as the Black Margarita with charcoal tequila, and many wines. The drinks menu is quite impressive considering the size of the restaurant. Providing the perfect corner for some peace and quiet inbetween shopping, the elegant art deco restaurant is warm and welcoming and will quickly become your go-to spot whenever you visit the world-famous store.

CHAMPAGNE
Harvest Time THE MAKING OF VINTAGE CHAMPAGNE As the first heralds of autumn sound their horns and September rolls around, so arrives the most important moment of the year for champagne producers: the harvest. This is the culmination of a year’s tender care of the vines and the first step towards ensuring our future supply of gorgeous golden bubbles to enjoy! From the very first day that the grapes begin to change colour, months before and usually around mid-summer, what is known as the ‘Ripening Observation Network’ swings into action in the Champagne region. Monitoring colour change, average weight and mean values for natural acidity and alcohol content of the grapes, they transmit these results across the regional governing bodies to ensure all the vignerons are in sync. These elements are determined by the amount of frost, sunshine and rain the vines have endured throughout the year, and it is these qualities that determine whether that year will produce an exceptional vintage for us to drink.
Traditionally the harvest takes place in mid-September through to October - although the start date can fluctuate. Just last year, 2018 was an extraordinary wine-growing year of bountiful sunshine and the largest rainfall since 1965, so the harvest started early on August 21st. This was one of the earliest dates since 1950, preceded only by 2011. The near-perfect quality of the grapes last year have led producers to hope for fantastic vintage - so that’s one to look out for when it appears on the shelves in about 2 years (after a minimum ageing of 3 years)! This year, the harvest is forecast to start later during mid September, although the official date has not yet been released. This will give the growers more time to source the 120,000 pickers who are annually given bed and board by the winegrowers and Champagne houses during this time - increasing the population by approximately 10%. The pickers will descend in teams of four per hectare, known as hordons in French, across all 34,300 hectares of vineyards. It is a
020 7244 1930 | info@champagne.co.uk | champagne.fr
COLUMN task done with urgency and cool efficiency, as pickers have roughly a three-week window in which to work - beyond that point the grapes will sadly be past their best. And, just to complicate matters, all Champagne grapes reach their peak of ripeness at about t h e
same time. As the British saying goes - you wait endlessly for a bus, then they all come at once… As in the 18th century, all Champagne grapes are hand-picked because the demand for whole, undamaged grape clusters is the same today. The aim is to prevent any grapes from macerating in their own juice (red skins colouring the juice) - ensuring we have the option to create clear, golden hues if so desired. There are over 1900 pressing centres in Champagne that press the grapes to a specific yield - usually 10,400 kg per hectare to manage the quantity of wine and keep it to 66 hectolitres per hectare. This is revisable upwards or downwards depending on the quality and quantity of the yield. In good years - such as 2012 - every Champagne producer is required to set aside a percentage of their wines as a precaution. This is to safeguard against disappointing future crops, or to meet exceptional levels of demand like in 2,000 when the whole world came together to celebrate the Millennium! These wines are stored in temperature-controlled tanks in the cellars, forming a reserve stock that is managed by the Comité Champagne. To be clear, houses and growers do not choose to create vintages every year. It would of course be possible, but not advisable. In years where there is an outstanding harvest, producers “declare” the vintage and make wines using only grapes from that particular year, before maturing them for a minimum of 3 years for release. As such, when Champagne vintages are released you can be sure to expect something truly special - and from the very best years, something legendary.

Roast Afternoon Tea Borough plays host to one of the most vibrant and exciting food markets around, but nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Borough Market sits a restaurant renowned for their quality British fare. Roast Restaurant’s position allows you to escape the crowds and watch in luxurious comfort from the mezzanine through panoramic windows. Here you can indulge in the restaurant’s excellent menu for lunch or dinner, however, for an afternoon stopoff, they have just the answer. Utilising the same fresh ingredients as found on the a la carte menu, the Roast Afternoon Tea is a feast for the eyes and the palate. Opening with a plateful of delectable finger sandwiches including roast beef with watercress, horseradish and mustard; sun-dried tomato and basil; cucumber, cream cheese and mint; smoked salmon with crème fraîche and of course, coronation chicken. The selection is as vibrant as the market below with classic British flavours supported by some unique additions. Every bite is a delight yet you can’t help but let your gaze wander. Moving up the beautifully presented plates, you lay eyes on the
perfectly risen scones with clotted cream and jam to match only to question whether you should indulge in everything tier by tier or opt for wherever your eyes take you. If you rely on your eyes, you might just find that the cake selection doesn’t last very long at all. The sticky date pudding is certain to sway your opinion. Think the most indulgent sticky toffee pudding, then make it even more indulgent and put it in a shot glass and you are somewhere close to the joy this little treat will deliver. Needless to say, there is little point expecting to take part in much sampling when you return to the market as this will be more than sufficient to satisfy any hunger. Of course you will require something equally sufficient to wash it all down and thankfully, Roast has a menu of twelve different teas to choose from along with the option to add some champagne or English sparkling wine into the mix. Traditional English Breakfast and Earl Grey sit alongside more unusual options such as Jasmine Pearls and Pai Mu Tan. Afternoon Tea at Roast is priced at £25pp or £30pp with the addition of Champagne.

FORD GT LE MANS
Opening a New Chapter on Ford Performance As Ford take part in the last Le Mans with their current GT, we take a look back at where it all started and where it’s set to go in the future. ROLLS-ROYCE
CULLINAN the epitome of luxury off-roading
The German owned British marque’s first soirée into the offroad SUV market could be seen as a simple marketing ploy, but there’s more to the Cullinan than just bells and whistles, a lot more. In terms of volume for money, you can’t get much bigger on UK roads without importing an American monster from across the pond and this is true for both exterior and interior capacities. Inevitably, this has all the expected traits of any Rolls-Royce to leave the Goodwood stable, but with a few new extras thrown in for good measure - and as a necessity to be relevant in the hypercompetitive SUV market. It seems almost every car manufacturer has now taken a seat at the table to take advantage of the opportunity to get a slice of
the SUV action, so it’s no surprise that Rolls-Royce has joined the party, especially when you remember that now under the BMW umbrella, they can take advantage of technology sharing to reduce the cost of full and extensive brand specific research and development. The underlying technologies from their very well established X5 undoubtedly played a big role in providing a sound platform on which to develop for this luxury off-roader. Of course, very little is directly related in terms of components between the two such as the massive in-house 6.75-litre unit under the expansive bonnet and maintained use of silky smooth air ride suspension customers have come to expect amongst other unique features you won’t find on any of the parent company’s cars.

Felix Kilbertus, Head of Exterior Design at Rolls-Royce explains. “From the very beginning the design team treated this brand new Rolls-Royce as a unique, high bodied car. With global customer expectations in mind, our aim was twofold - realise a presence to match the magnificent capability of Cullinan, whilst setting sector defining standards for luxury and elegance. We know that many of our luxury patrons pursue sports or leisure hobbies that require precisely this type of go anywhere vehicle - Cullinan’s design gesture had to possess an immediate sense of effortless accomplishment. The label SUV is now applied to anything with a two-box silhouette and the least suggestion of going off tarmac. We envisioned an authentic, three-box high-bodied all-terrain car with a convention-challenging design and absolute capability that would satisfy the adventurous urges of our clients.” You would be justified in thinking this was a car designed and built to be nothing more than the ultimate ‘Chelsea wagon’ aiming to take a slice of the market from the ever popular Range Rover and latest competitor, Bentley’s Bentayga. However, the phrase never judge a book by its cover has never been more true than with the Cullinan. Designed and engineered from the ground up to perform both on and off-road, this is not just a car in which you can show off on the streets of London - which of course you can regardless - but is one that you can genuinely take off-piste, within reason, and enjoy to its full potential.

That enormous engine serves a purpose, packing a more than sufficient 563hp and staggering 850Nm of torque at just 1,600rpm, you won’t struggle to pull anything that might get stuck and certainly won’t have any issues with performance on the road. A zero to sixty time of just 5.0 seconds would be considered swift in a standard road-going vehicle, but to move one of this size and weight at such speed is a remarkable feat of engineering and testament to both the design and development teams at Rolls-Royce. You can continue up to a governed speed of 155mph which feels just like any leisurely drive you might take in a ‘regular’ car - and rest easy knowing that you have some seriously large brakes under foot and a whole host of safety features to ensure you avoid getting yourself into trouble. Their celebrated ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ features both on and off-road thanks to the new lighter architecture, and the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension. Through a thorough re-engineering of the existing air suspension system - including adding larger air struts with more air volume to cushion the blows of the toughest of terrains - the strengthening of drive and prop shafts, the inclusion of drive to the front wheels as well as the back for the first time in Rolls-Royce history, and the complete reworking of the new 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 engine to deliver the perfect level of performance. Push the ‘everywhere’ button and you are ready to go. Engaging all the necessary drive systems at the push of a button, you can finesse the off-road setting to glide over any situation, whether it be rough track, gravel, wet grass,

mud, snow or sand, delivering all 850Nm of torque to all four wheels without compromise. Even when faced with deep snow, sand or the need to ford streams, Cullinan delivers the deepest wading depth of any super-luxury SUV at 540mm thanks to its highest ride height. Of course, you won’t be short of comfort inside the car at any point thanks to the luxuriously plush interior which maintains the fine leathers, wood veneers and opulent finish the brand are renowned for. You can even enjoy a freshly chilled bottle of champagne on your adventures should you choose to include the refrigeration package neatly secluded within the rear seats. Despite these maintained levels of quality and comfort, the brand have introduced a whole host of Rolls-Royce firsts with this car including the striking rear profile of the car. Designed largely with function in mind, this is a car that has been engineered to do exactly what it sets out to achieve, providing a go-everywhere vehicle that delivers comfort for its passengers, an unrivaled driving experience and sufficient space to include luggage for those extended adventures. All of which has come about from the evolution of market trends across the luxury sector. A younger buyer demographic has brought with it a bigger desire to explore and travel in luxury, so of course Rolls-Royce were more than happy to oblige. The distinctive ‘clasp’ rear opening provides the perfect platform to enjoy the view with a glass of that chilled champagne, but also functions as a very useful access tool, delivering a vast opening at the rear of the car. Add to this

another first for the marque, folding rear seats - which are operated by the push of a button to avoid any excess exertion - and you immediately have a truly enormous rear luggage space that should be sufficient for even the most adventurous amongst you. The rear is so expansive when all is said and done that it offers a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. You can’t get much more practical than that. Seating for three in the back also make this the RollsRoyce of choice for families, delivering more than enough space for everyone along with the option to entertain on long journeys with built in rear screens.
Rolls-Royce were keen to provide the most opulent of travel experiences resulting in the creation of this first true ‘three-box’ SUV. Separating the cabin from the luggage compartment with a glass partition, passengers can enjoy their journey in nothing but clean, luxurious comfort. This new line takes Rolls-Royce on a distinctive path with an entirely new architecture that is set to provide the basis for future models, and is certain to stretch the boundaries of the luxury SUV market in an attempt to compete. There is no doubt that this car provides the epitome in luxury offroading, whether you want to enjoy champagne in the middle of nowhere or not.

1964 Jaguar MKII £POA
Jaguar MKII Popular with criminals and law enforcement alike thanks to the impressive performance figures for the time - 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds, a top speed of 125mph and room for five adults - the 3.8-litre Jaguar MKII made its way to both the small and big screens including the iconic Inspector Morse. Boasting the same 3.8-litre XK block as used in the stunning E-Type, this Jaguar MKII from 1964 offers up 220bhp with an upgraded 5-speed manual transmission, electronic ignition, new clutch and carburettors and a host of other new additions making this a much more usable car on modern roads. The MKII brought with it an increase in cabin glass thanks to slender front pillars allowing for a wider windscreen as well as a
‘wrap around’ rear windscreen, providing vastly improved visibility over the outgoing model. It also brought the familiar D-Shape over the rear door. This example is finished in white coachwork with a contrast red leather interior. Previously kept in South Africa, it is a dry car that has also received a full repaint, new leather, re-finished wood and wire wheels with Coombs spats. It comes complete with a large service file and has been carefully maintained. As a result it drives as a well maintained example should, carrying a very good oil pressure and does not overheat in traffic. A desirable colour combination and sympathetic upgrades make this car a lovely usable classic car at a sensible price.

Enduring Success The Ford GT celebrates a rich history at the world’s greatest endurance event as the marque closes the curtain on the latest chapter in the GT’s endurance racing.
Dating back to 1923, the 24 hours of Le Mans is the longest running endurance race in the world and has provided the perfect platform for vehicle development throughout its near 100 year history. The Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans is a semi-permanent race track - encompassing race specific sections along with some public roads which are otherwise accessible for the rest of the year - which plays host to this automotive spectacular annually every June. The timing of the event makes for interesting racing due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, ranging from extreme heat causing problems for drivers and cars to highly regular spells of rain which can often catch competitors out. Concentration is key, but can be near impossible to maintain considering the task at hand. Modern regulations state that a minimum of two or three drivers are required to compete with strict measures on driving and rest times for each competitor to reduce the risk of concentration related incidents, yet, in years gone by, these regulations were somewhat more relaxed with some drivers even attempting to complete the feat single-handed.
Drivers aside, without a reliable car behind you and a team capable of maintaining it throughout the race, there is very little chance of succeeding. If you can overcome all of these, every aspect needs to be able to perform at the highest level throughout the entire 24 hour period in order to come out on top. One manufacturer who was able to achieve such a result and enjoy victory throughout the sixties as a result of such high levels of performance and vehicle developments was Ford with their iconic GT40. Taking the first overall victory at Le Mans for an American manufacturer in 1966 - in the presence of Henry Ford II - the car enjoyed a first, second and third place finish, firmly cementing its place on the endurance racing scene. Winning at the now 8.5 mile long circuit over the following three years, the Ford GT40 took centre stage until production ended in 1969. Initially winning with the MkII version which featured upgrades courtesy of Carroll Shelby’s organisation including a whopping 7.0-litre engine, the GT40 shocked the field including the previously dominant Ferrari who had enjoyed unrivaled wins

six years in a row from ‘60-’65. The win in ‘66 marked the beginning of Ford’s success and dominance over the field which continued until the end of the 1960’s. It wasn’t until 2004 that the ‘GT’ name returned to the Ford stable. Removing the ‘40’ due to a four inch increase in the cars height whilst maintaining its iconic sleek profile, this concept car was developed as part of the marque’s centenary celebrations. Entering production, the first generation Ford GT eventually sold over 4,000 units over its lifespan until production ceased once more in 2006. The cars 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine proved popular with the American market, with almost 80% of sales finding their way to US homes. A decade later and the second generation GT was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show to mark 50 years since the incredible GT40’s one, two, three finish at Le Mans. The return to endurance racing under Ford Chip Ganassi Team USA and UK saw four factory cars competing - two under each team - in the LMGTE Pro class under considerably stricter regulations than the 1960’s GT40 experienced. Vast improvements in automotive technology have shifted the goalposts of endurance racing, with the introduction of prototype and outright race designed vehicles into the mix, meaning production vehicles are no longer able to compete on the main stage. Despite this, the Ford GT team were keen to make an impact on the 50 year anniversary outing.
Featuring an engine capacity half that of the race car’s predecessor, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost unit - with almost 650bhp - was too powerful to be accommodated within the ‘Balance of Performance’ regulations necessary for the 24 hour race, meaning that the cars power required some substantial reduction in order to qualify, however thanks to the GT’s impressive selection of other features - including its carbon-fibre monocoque system - the power reduction was not enough to prevent the win over its competitive Ferrari counterpart, securing the best possible celebration for the anniversary. The 2016 win in the LMGTE Pro class at Le Mans was supported by third and fourth place finishes for the Ford Chip Ganassi team, ensuring celebrations ensured whilst helping to promote sales of the equally impressive road going version which has been a resounding success, enjoying continued sales since production began. GT Mk II You can now get your hands on a piece of this incredible automotive history thanks to the release of the spectacular GT Mk II by Ford and Multimatic. This limited-edition, track-only GT represents the next stage in Ford GT performance and delivers a car to the public beyond anything previously available. With a 700+ horsepower 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, race-proven aerodynamics and competition-oriented handling, the GT Mk II has been co-developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic based on competitive learnings from Ford’s successful FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns with the Ford GT race car - however it is engineered independent of race series rules, regulations and limitations making it the fastest GT ever produced. Limited to just 45 vehicles, with a starting price of $1.2 million, the GT Mk II joins the GT race car that won the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Ford GT supercar. “The true off-the-hook performance capability of the GT hasn’t yet been fully showcased,” said Multimatic’s chief technical officer, Larry Holt. “The road car is obviously limited by the many global homologation requirements that it must comply with, and the race car suffers from the restriction of the dreaded Balance of Performance, resulting in it being 150 horsepower down to the road car. The Mk II answers the regularly asked question of how would the car perform with all the limitations lifted: the answer is spectacularly.” Visit fordgtmkii.com or email fordgtmkii@multimatic.com for full specifications and to register interest.

All good things must come to an end, much like the original GT40’s reign at Le Mans, and Ford’s return to endurance racing with the 2016 GT race program was never expected to continue indefinitely. Following such a successful return to the sport, the team have continued to push the boundaries - whilst remaining within the mechanical regulations - and brought about changes to both the race and road going versions of this incredible car. This year marked the final appearance at Le Mans with the current GT and Ford Chip Ganassi Racing after a successful four year program. It won’t be the last time you will have the chance to see this stunning car racing around Le Mans though, as the first private team also took the tarmac for the 2019 edition, providing a five car line-up. Despite being unable to finish at the front of the pack - just missing out on the podium with a 4th, 5th and 6th finish for three of the cars - there is no denying the success that the reintroduction
of the Ford GT to endurance racing has had, certainly when you look at the production sales figures. “It’s definitely bittersweet because we would have loved to gone out with a win in the GTE Pro class here at Le Mans,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “But all four cars finished strongly so there are a lot of positives to take away. We accomplished a lot with this program in a very short time frame and that’s a credit to the Ford GT being a great race car, but also having great drivers and partners like Chip Ganassi Racing, Multimatic and Roush Yates.” The No. 68 GT of Sébastien Bourdais (FR), Dirk Müller (GER) and Joey Hand (US) who had previously earned Ford’s Le Mans victory in 2016 finished fourth. “The start wasn’t great for us,” said Le Mans native Bourdais. “We struggled with the car on low tire pressures and got some bad breaks with the Safety Car periods. The timing just didn’t go our way. We were all hoping for a full
ford.co.uk | performance.ford.com | lemans.org
course caution scenario to play out, but they didn’t call it that way. Unfortunately when they went to the Safety Car period instead, that was one of the things that really hurt our chances to fight back. I don’t know if it would have been enough for us to come back and fight for the win, but maybe the podium for sure. I’ve really enjoyed my time in the Ford GT and with this program. The whole team at Ganassi and Ford were great to work with and we had a great group here to race with.” There will be a big gap in the championship with the retirement of the Ford factory team, but nothing will ever take away from the team’s acheivements across the decades, from 1966 to 2016 and beyond. The Ford GT is and will continue to be an incredible machine that - without regulation - would undoubtedly rule the track over any rival in its class. As for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it is an automotive event unmatched by any other on the globe. Bringing the world of
endurance racing to this otherwise quiet town is an experience unlike any other, and one that Ford will be keen to enjoy again in the future. Whether you are a Ford fan or not, there is no denying this is a bucket list event that you have to experience at least once in your life. Just make sure you’re ready for at least one sleepless night. Watching the glow of brakes as the drivers continue to push regardless of the hour and watching the sun rise over this breathtaking track are just two highlights that are not to be missed. Of course, if you can’t wait for Ford to return to the endurance racing scene, you could always pick up your own little piece of history with a production model, or even indulge in one of the very limited new GT MkII’s for the ultimate racing experience. The Ford performance department will continue to develop for the future behind the scenes, but for now, the sun has set on Ford’s endurance racing escapades.

SAVILLS
What are prime central London tenants looking for? with Georgina Bartlett, Head of Lettings at Savills Sloane Street
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and what it might mean for the economy, tenant demand for prime property has remained surprisingly robust so far in 2019. But that demand has also become more discerning. Today’s prime London tenants are increasingly savvy and are concerned with two main factors - the first being quality and the second being value for money. Presentation is absolutely key, a beautiful property in a wellregarded location should let quickly. The standard of finish has become a key differentiator in the lettings market, but so too has character. As the saying goes, for some of our tenants it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Now more than ever people are wanting best in class homes - they’re less fussed about specific postcodes and would rather a property is suited and booted. A well-dressed property can let in two weeks. For smaller or compromised rooms, landlords should consider dressing these to showcase their potential, particularly when square footage doesn’t speak for itself. For example, creating a TV den or a playroom in a family house or perhaps a smart study or dressing area in a stylish apartment could allow a tenant to really visualize themselves enjoying that room. Tenants will always carry out thorough research when looking for a rental property - these days they’re doing their homework and equipping themselves with a full arsenal of what’s what in the local lettings market. For the reason, it’s essential that landlords strive to price their properties correctly from the beginning of the marketing process to ensure that interest comes through at the right level. We usually find that when it comes to apartment blocks, tenants will ask about lifestyle facilities like swimming pools and gyms. Generally speaking these are individuals who have busy lives and want to have access to amenities at their fingertips. But ultimately security can often be the most important consideration particularly for those who travel and people seek comfort in the knowledge that their flat will be “looked in on” and deliveries will be taken in by an on-site concierge team. Meanwhile when it comes to location, tenants searches tend to be driven by what’s on offer locally. It could be that someone originally begins their search in north west London but comes savills.co.uk
COLUMN to Belgravia or Chelsea because they recognise that the bars, restaurants and members clubs located in the West End and the prime residential areas in SW1 here might be better suited to their needs. Typically, the most popular properties are family houses and luxury small apartments with access to gardens or outdoor space. In PCL a good two bedroom apartment can start from around £600 per week, but generally tenants can expect to pay circa £750 per week and upwards for a high quality property on a garden square. Meanwhile, rent for large traditional family houses in the area can start from £2,000 per week. During the summer, we find that one in every four of our tenants is looking for a family house.
Looking ahead to the autumn market, we expect to see continued demand for family houses for those with children at boarding school and pied-à-terre for professionals with business interests extending outside of London and the UK. Compared to the same period last year, in the last quarter our registered applicants were up by 13% and this is something we expect to see continuing in the second half of the year due to people re-locating and wanting to be moved in before the new school year begins.

One of the most important stages of undertaking a building project is obtaining planning permission. Sally Tagg and her team of experts from Foxley Tagg will impart the latest information on new regulations and laws and find a realistic route to deliver the aesthetic outcome desired. All attendees can navigate their way on site with the help of the show app, available on iPhone and Android. THE REFINERY
Amazing Shared Ownership opportunity available - we’ll pay 5% towards your deposit!
Situated within the exciting community of Silvertown in East London, The Refinery offers a choice of 60 contemporary one, two and three bedroom apartments and duplexes, which are available through the Shared Ownership Scheme.
Where history meets modern connectivity
Located between Canary Wharf and London City airport, The Refinery provides diversity on your doorstep and with Silvertown regenerated and transformed, it is already emerging as a thriving community in which to live, work and socialise. The Refinery’s iconic riverside location with new transport links by rail, road and river provide effortless travel across the capital. Placing you a stone’s throw from West Silvertown DLR Station where trains run westbound to Bank, Stratford, Westfield and beyond.
How Shared Ownership works
To qualify for the Shared Ownership Scheme, your household income needs to be less than £90,000 per annum and you should not own a property. The scheme works by allowing you to buy a share of the apartment (usually between 35% and 75%) and pay a subsidised rent on the rest.
We’ll pay 5%* towards your deposit
What’s more, we’re offering to pay a further 5%* to match your deposit, meaning that your monthly mortgage repayments will be even more manageable. One of the key features of Shared Ownership is that it enables you to buy additional shares in your home until you own all of it - we call this ‘Staircasing’. As you purchase more shares the rent reduces, and when you own 100% of the property, your rental payments will stop.
Refined open plan apartments with exceptional views
With attention to detail at every turn, the high-quality internal specification of each apartment greets you from the moment you step inside. Whether you’re looking for a one bedroom apartment or a more spacious two or three bedroom, the airy open plan layout boasts a range of intelligent design features to create a homely living space for relaxation and entertainment.
