The powerful IWC-manufactured engine is one of the most complicated mechanical movements ever designed in

Schaffhausen. The patented constant-force mechanism disengages the escapement from the direct flow of power through the wheel train and transmits completely even impulses of energy to the escape wheel. In conjunction with the tourbillon, which compensates for the negative influences of gravity on the oscillating system, this ensures a highly accurate rate. The plates and bridges are fully blackened having undergone an elaborate rhodiumplating process to match the colour of the case and the movement, which is reminiscent of an engine block, can be viewed through the sapphire glass back. WATCHES are all made of Ceratanium®. This IWC-developed material is light and robust like titanium but also similarly hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic. During the first step of the manufacturing process, the components are machined with maximum precision from a proprietary titanium alloy. Afterwards, they are fired at very high temperatures in a kiln. It is during this furnacing process that a phase transformation takes place, and the surface of the material assumes properties similar to those of ceramic. Other characteristics of Ceratanium® are its skinfriendliness and unique matte black finish. While the constant-force tourbillon at 9 o’clock is the eyecatcher on the dial, the design also features a double moon phase display for the northern and southern hemispheres. White numerals and yellowcoloured accents imitate a dashboard, while the power reserve display at 4 o’clock is reminiscent of a tachometer. The louvred, ring-shaped structure of the outer dial ring takes inspiration from the cold air intakes of a high-performance engine. Even the black rubber strap incorporates a detail from the world of racing. Modern and masculine with a solid steel bracelet and unique camouflage PVD coating, 3 specially curated colour palettes are now available. new highly chromatic creations including a Pantone piece and a number of unique colour watches. Highlighting the concept of high-frequency precision through striking creations, Zenith’s 1/100th of a second chronograph - the Defy 21 - translates high oscillation frequencies into single regions of the visible light spectrum which began with the Defy 21 Ultraviolet in 2020. This piece featured the world’s first violetcoloured chronograph movement, standing out against the entirely muted case in matte microblasted titanium. Pure Resonance Sky Blue The unique piece for Watches & Wonders offers a differentiated ability to consistently maintain a state of resonance represents nothing less than a redefinition of the practical limits for marine chronometer precision in a wristwatch. In general, Armin Strom carefully maintains a pared-down approach that keeps the brand’s style of watchmaking focused on its essence. How concentrated that style may be, this special-edition head further in that direction, squarely placing emphasis on the watch’s most remarkable feature: the visible dual balances oscillating in resonance. The special blue dial and the matt hand decorated finish are highlighting the swiss German style of this timepiece. The dial offers a “Kari Voutilainen hand Guilloché” subdial for time displays - Roman numerals dominate the off-center subdial displaying hours and minutes in white with steel hands, while a classic railroad track marks the exact minutes. The smaller subdial at 7 o’clock displays seconds using only a batonshaped hand and a simple track. It’s absolutely spectacular movement finishing is often overlooked as the hypnotic pulsation of its clutch spring and the synchronized motion of its two balance wheels provide a mesmerizing distraction that invariably captures most of the attention. The reason for this watch’s improved chronometry can be found in the straightforward approach to the movement: the fewer functions a timepiece must perform, the better it can concentrate on accuracy. In other words, with no superfluous functions this watch can focus fully on providing the time in marine chronometer precision. The time displays receive their portioned energy from the lower regulator, while the upper regulator remains in place to create resonance. “My primary objective was to improve chronometric precision via the consistent maintenance of a resonance state. But that consistency was also a prerequisite to sustain a kinetic spectacle on the dial side of our watch. This special edition of the Pure Resonance looks and acts just like a “normal” threehanded watch. Premier Timepiece After nearly two decades of partnership, watchmaker Breitling and luxury automotive manufacturer Bentley Motors are celebrating the launch of the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 Bentley Limited Edition, produced in an exclusive series of just 25 pieces. “We’re proud of this elegant symbol of our brands’ shared values: quality, performance, and design excellence,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. Back in 2002, Bentley Motors commissioned Breitling to create an on-board clock for its legendary Continental GT. Created in the spirit of stylistic perfection and peerless quality, the exclusive new chronograph also pays homage to Willy Breitling, a passionate Bentley driver whose watches changed the face of timekeeping. Willy Breitling, the grandson of founder, Léon Breitling, patented the chronograph with two independent pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock in 1934. Besides being tech savvy and bold, Willy Breitling understood the desire for elegance and glamour. This led him to design the original Premier wristwatches in the 1940s, Breitling’s first link from purpose to style. How to host a barbecue for six in style this May bank holiday As we embrace the (moderately) warm weather, Francoise Peretti, Champagne Bureau UK Director, shares her tips on making your barbecue an altogether more refined affair.

As the UK continues along its roadmap to unlocking, the “rule of six” is back. And with not one, but two bank holidays in May, for many people that can only mean one thing: a barbecue. Come rain or come shine, the British have an admirable commitment to alfresco dining. No matter the weather on the day, it is safe to say that enthusiasts will be out in their aprons with tongs, somewhere. This pragmatic and resilient ethos stands us all in good stead ahead of the summer, when, as we tentatively edge towards calendars that include social gatherings, barbecues and picnics, in their

fresh-aired safety, will undoubtedly be the new dinner party. In a wonderful and rare coincidence, following one of the driest and coldest of Aprils on record, daffodils and tulips line our garden borders side by side in a cacophony of colour, making it the perfect time to be outside in nature. May also brings with it bountiful seasonal British produce, including strawberries, Jersey Royals, radishes, crab and lamb. With that in mind, here is a simple guide to pairing barbecued delights with Champagne… For flowing conversation, fresh crab and fish dishes, choose a

COLUMN Blanc de Blancs Non-Vintage Champagne. Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, a non-vintage Blanc de Blancs is a lively, spritely style that’s sure to brighten any gathering – no matter how long its participants have been trapped indoors. A NonVintage indicates the wine will be young, and almost certainly full of vivacious bubbles. In keeping with springtime, expect floral aromas of white flowers such as hawthorne, accompanied by citric elements such as lemon and grapefruit that make seafood dishes sing, whether you’re serving a crab salad with avocado, prawns, or steamed fish cooked over the barbecue. In almost all Blanc de Blancs Champagne you will discover a balanced minerality (chalkiness and freshness), that will leave your palate cleansed, revived and ready for the next dish. For spring lamb and pork, choose Vintage Rosé Champagne. Whether you’re opting for lamb chops, pork belly or barbecue ribs for the main event, the black grape component of rosé champagne makes it the perfect pairing for flavourful meats. Choosing a vintage rosé (aged by law for a minimum of 3 years in the cellars) means that the wine will have had the opportunity to develop a deeper complexity, often revealing nutty and toasty elements. Rosé champagne can be made in two ways – maceration, known as ‘saignée’, where the wine sits with the red grape skins to colour it pink, and ‘assemblage’ where a dash of red wine created in the Champagne region is added. Both methods increase the tannin levels, giving that wine more backbone and structure that will counterbalance powerful dishes, as well as red fruit aromas and flavour that are a natural partner. Think lamb and redcurrant jelly. Grilled halloumi, Jersey Royals potato salad, charred veggies

or poultry, choose a Brut Non-Vintage Champagne. For delicious vegetarian options, or for those who like to avoid red meat, my advice is to select a Brut Non-Vintage, a ‘classic blend’. This is a wonderfully versatile style that incorporates a mix of all three major grapes in Champagne – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier – promising freshness, fruitiness and golden bubbles. All Champagne brands will have their own Brut NV, which is the flagship style of the house and iconic flavour associated with that brand. Many of these are also vegan, so if that’s something that’s important to you, keep an eye out on the label. For strawberry-laden Eton mess, cheesecake, divine pavlovas and sweet treats, choose a Demi-Sec Champagne. In my experience, desserts at barbecues combine fruity fresh, creamy and sweet flavours all together – often with unapologetically indulgent, rustic charm. For a wine that works harmoniously with these different elements, I would recommend a demi-sec champagne. It is a sweeter style which gently envelops the palate, while retaining that iconic champagne freshness to make the whole dish feel lighter.

London Concours 2021 Iconic British Design Showcase

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, is one of the most luxurious automotive garden parties and is hosted right in the heart of the City of London. This year, from Tuesday 8th to Thursday 10th June, the hugely exciting automobile extravaganza will see almost 100 of the world’s most precious cars gather in the gardens of the historic and beautiful Honourable Artillery Company Headquarters and will include a ferocious collection of horsepower arranged in specially curated and themed displays. One such display will celebrate iconic British design with a host of spectacular cars demonstrating the beauty of British automotive history. The class dedicated to Iconic British Designs, as well as the Brits behind them forms one of three special London Concours features for 2021, sitting alongside a further seven classes for a total of nearly 100 rare and exotic vehicles on display. The collection begins with two vehicles that transcend their status as British icons and into the realm of global legend. Sir Alec Issigonis’ Mini - a timeless and ingenious design - is joined by the ever-green lines of Malcolm Sayer’s Jaguar E-type Series I, penned with the eye of a man with a history in aviation design

and a rigorous scientific method for aerodynamics. From there, the class takes in some of the lesser known work of South African-born British designer, Gordon Murray. Famed for the McLaren F1 - appearing elsewhere at London Concours - Murray also worked on the little known Light Car Company Rocket. Weighing in at 340kg, the two-seater Rocket is powered by a 1.0-litre Yamaha engine with less than 150hp - enough to launch it from 0-60mph in around four seconds. Murray’s co-designer for the McLaren F1, Peter Stevens, will also feature at the London Concours for his work with the Jaguar XJR-15. The world’s first road car with a carbon fibre chassis and body, the one-of-53 XJR-15 borrows extensively from the Le Mans-winning XJR-9, fitted with a 6.0-litre V12 producing around 450hp. For essentially creating the luxury SUV, London Concours will also pay homage to the Range Rover and its designer Charles Spencer King. On display at the event will be a oneof-200 Range Rover CSK, a tribute to ‘Spen’ King that was - in 1990 - the fastest Range Rover yet built. The V8 was tweaked

to produce 185hp, handling was sharpened with changes to the suspension and dampers, and the CSK was finished in Beluga Black, silver pinstripes and chrome bumpers. Also joining the British Design Icons class will be a 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé, penned by Ian Cameron, as part of the rebirth of Rolls-Royce under BMW ownership. Assertive, timeless and elegant it was, even at a glance, everything a RollsRoyce should be. Alongside it, London Concours welcomes the Aston Martin One-77, designed by Marek Reichman as the ultimate expression of Aston Martin; a completely bespoke handcrafted showcase of British design and engineering, limited to just 77 units worldwide. Completing the class is the Morgan Aeromax, a design by Matthew Humphries, and the McLaren 12C - the car to rebirth McLaren’s roadgoing range, and designed by Frank Stephenson. The Iconic British Designs is one of eleven classes and features that will grace this year’s London Concours. Visitors will also find classes dedicated to 200mph supercars, a celebration of Porsche, the most beautiful Italian Berlinettas of the ‘60s and ‘The Youngtimers’, focused on the most powerful German saloon cars of the ‘80s and ‘90s. This car bridges the gap between outright SUV - the Cayenne - and sports car - the 911 - perfectly thanks to the balance between functionality, style and performance. You can enjoy the power and ability of this car just as much as rely on it for the everyday, which is an essential part of modern motoring. As you would expect from a company like Porsche, the ride is excellent with the adaptive suspension affording suitable levels of comfort when needed and sufficient stiffness under more rigorous driving. The steering also adapts to your driving thanks to the electromechanical power steering - which some may find takes away from the 'sportiness' of the car - and remains sharp and precise despite the larger size of the vehicle. This is in part thanks to the lowered chassis which aids in the cars cornering dynamics that can be lowered a further 10mm if you also opt for the air suspension. Performance and functionality really do go hand in hand here, with plenty of passenger space to enjoy longer journeys without feeling cramped as well as the obvious benefit over

something like a 911 with the substantial boot space on offer. Of course, if you are after a sports car, you would be better suited looking at one of the many other options in the Porsche line-up, but if you require that additional space while maintaining a certain level of performance without the need for an oversized monster, then you could do a lot worse than taking one of these for a drive. Designed to almost be a jack of all trades, the Macan GTS takes the model to a different level and pushes the boundaries of what you would expect from a small SUV thanks to their incredible understanding of automotive design. Sleek in appearance and sharp in the detail, this is a very well engineered vehicle that is not short of substance. Delivering in every aspect, whether you want speed, handling, space, comfort or just a car that looks good, you will struggle to find much if any fault and thanks to the latest engine technology developments, you can even enjoy a respectable fuel consumption of around 25mpg obviously not if you're utilising all of those 380hp at once. What you get with the Macan GTS is the combination of decades of engineering development with the very latest in automotive design and a quality of materials and finish that just aren't available at a lower price. You can find faster SUV's and more spacious ones, but you will have to do some searching to find one that has it all.

1978 MGB Roadster £POA

O R I G I N A L British born, the roadster was the first of the MGB range to be produced starting production in 1962. The pure two-seater, made better use of space over the earlier MGA giving more passenger and luggage space while being almost 8cm shorter overall. In 1967, sufficient changes were introduced for the factory to define a Mark II model. Changes included synchromesh on all four gears with revised ratios, an optional Borg-Warner 35 automatic gearbox, a new rear axle, and an alternator in place of the dynamo with a change to a negative earth system.

Work on a successor for the MGB had been undertaken as early as 1964 with the EX234 prototype, but due to the excellent sales of the MGB and Midget, BMC cancelled it in 1966. In 1968 a second proposed replacement was developed, the ADO76, but British Leyland had ceased work on that project by the end of 1970; the ADO76 would ultimately become the rubber-bumper version of the MGB in 1974 before production ceased in 1980. This 1978 offering of one such vehicle is one of the most original examples around. Finished in striking Giallofly Yellow coachwork, this roadster comes complete with its original cloth interior and is showing just 36,000 miles believed to be correct. Despite its age and original nature, the car is in very good order, but also primed and ready for an update should you choose to invest in bringing it a little more up-to-date. However, considering its current state, general maintenance should be sufficient to keep its originality whilst still being able to enjoy it on the open road. If you're in the market for a classic British sports car, you won't find many as original as this. Perfect for soaking up the sun as you wind through the English countryside, this vibrant two-seater offers the ideal weekend car opportunity.

Auction Sales Soar with Jeremy Lamb, Director of Savills Auctions

As the hammer went down on our final sale of 2020 it sealed a year and a performance that surprised us all. With the onset of the first lockdown, the prospect of raising significantly more than the previous year seemed almost unthinkable. But as the months ticked by, we began to feel it could actually be within reach. Not only did we hold our biggest December sale since 2015, we also raised 30 per cent more than our concluding auction of 2019. That momentum is continuing. For the first time in a while, there’s a genuine demand across all asset classes as well as a cross section of active buyers. The key takeaway is that all are looking to transact on good quality property, be that in terms of location, build type, the investment opportunity or potential yield. Back in 2016 we saw the impact that the 3 per cent surcharge for additional homes had in the auction room; that February we had a bumper sale with nearly 200 lots sold and around £70 million raised. It was clear that the stamp duty holiday would have a similar effect; a buyer and seller survey undertaken by our residential research team in December reported that 25 per cent of respondents were seeking to beat the deadline, a sentiment echoed by many of our clients too. A remote method of sale offers flexibility meaning we had the opportunity to meet this demand by holding two spring sales. The fact that we registered more bidders in February than ever before, coupled with around 200 lots being sold for around £80 million across both auctions highlights just how much of a driver the deadline was for buyers. Given that the stamp duty holiday has been extended, we’ve adjusted upcoming auction dates to accommodate several additional sales and already the signs are encouraging. So what are the major areas of interest?

Residential Recent Savills research has identified a marked shortage of detached houses for sale across east and southern England, so it’s no coincidence that they generate significant interest when they come up at auction. For example, in March we sold a five bedroom farmhouse with attached cottage in Devon for £1.7 million - a great illustration of the lifestyle property currently sought by owner occupiers. COLUMN Developers and investors are also attracted by what they consider to be a reliable asset. When it comes to flats, size, location, condition and outside space are all aspects that have strong sales appeal.

Development Development sites represent an asset class which has really picked up pace due to the rarity of finding a suitable and well-located offering. Several sites in London and other key regional cities such as Cardiff have sold well this year and, with a great many self-builders and locally based builders out there, we’d expect demand to continue.

We saw that in March when a Notting Hill mixed-use commercial and residential opportunity went for 25 per cent more than its £950,000 guide, while towards the end of last year a 50-room Birmingham care home with residential potential had a hammer price of £1.445 million. Ultimately where there are multiple angles to maximise rental income or develop further, these opportunities are being well received by the market. It’s often said our trading floor - the residential auction - is regarded as the front line of housing market activity so eyes will be on our upcoming sale on 2 June.
