RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017 23rd - 27th May

Taking place between 23 – 27 May, a highlight of the spring season and leading us perfectly into the summer, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show sponsored by M&G Investments is a much loved institution and highlight of the social calendar.

Regarded as the world’s most prestigious flower show that inspires millions through showcasing the best in garden design, this year’s show promises to be even more spectacular than the last. Around eight hundred imaginative garden designers will be taking part and have spent nearly a month creating a horticultural wonderland over the huge 11-acre site. Nick Mattingley, RHS Director of Shows, says: “As with every RHS Chelsea Flower Show for more than a century, designers, nurserymen and leading lights of the horticultural world are pulling out all the stops to make this the best gardening event in the world. “With world-class designers like Chris Beardshaw, James Basson, Nigel Dunnett, Kate Gould and Sarah Eberle, many new trailblazers in horticulture, and outstanding specialist nurseries such as Hilliers, Burncoose, Dibleys and Kelways, we’re looking forward to a fabulous show. “As well as having some very exciting Fresh Gardens at the show,” said Nick, “we also have a record number of Artisan Gardens this year which are bigger than ever before.”

There are more than 500 exhibits at the 2017 show and highlights include The BBC Radio 2 Feel Good Gardens, which will also celebrate the station’s fiftieth anniversary; and Professor Nigel Dunnett’s RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden. Nigel, who created the wildflower meadow for the London Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2012, will demonstrate and celebrate the multiple benefits of plants and gardens in even the smallest of areas, and provide a vision for the future development and use of private, communal and social spaces in the places where we live. Artisan Garden highlights include the 2016 winner of Best Fresh Garden, Gary Breeze, whose garden features the replica of an 800-year-old boat that was discovered in the Norfolk Broads. Ishihara Kazuyuki returns for his 12th year with Gosho No Niwa inspired by the Kyoto emperors of Japan and the unique work of inspirational Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí is the focus of Sarah Eberle’s Viking Cruises Garden of Inspiration. Fresh Gardens include Jack Dunckley’s The Bermuda Triangle which will resemble an active volcano surrounded by tropical planting. At 23, Jack is one of the youngest garden designers ever rhs.org.uk

Selfridges Our House What makes a house a home? Selfridges addresses the shifting nature of home, home-making and craft in a rocked world. Our House, the department store’s latest campaign, explores the rituals, objects and ideas that make a house a home. Our House is set against the backdrop of a world rocked by some major geopolitical changes in which the definition of home seems to be in a state of flux. International migration and the volume of people’s displacement are at their most critical since the Second World War. Space and homeownership across the globe’s biggest capitals - especially in London, have become accessible only to a shrinking minority. At the same time, mobile technology which enables people to become digital nomads and transport their “home” everywhere they go is further shifting the idea of a house as home. The saturation of modern living with digital devices, virtual communication and interactions has diminished the connection between people and making things, as they become increasingly more time-poor. Conversely, with Selfridges’ home accessories sales registering well over 30% sustained growth in the past 15 months, and programmes such as the Big British Bake Off, the Great Pottery Throw Down, and the now defunct Great British Sewing Bee attracting millions of viewers, making things and home-making seem to be back on the agenda. In the light of such a disparate and contrasting picture, as well as asking customers to pause long enough to consider what home means to them, Selfridges is reflecting on and celebrating the essence of what makes a house a home, its rituals and the place of

craft and making things by hand within it. For Our House, Selfridges has collaborated with The New Craftsmen, one of the foremost proponents of the resurgence of craft in the UK, to create a fully immersive conceptual house to heighten customers’ appreciation of home-making. Built over 3,000 sqft, the house called ‘A Home For All’, has been designed to re-engage and stimulate the maker and all who visit the house. Inspired by traditional farmhouse designs, A Home For All features a conceptual take on the bedroom (Rest area), the kitchen (Gather area), the living room (Play area) and the bathroom (Cleanse area). Customer interaction and participation are solicited in every area – especially the Gather and Play areas where ambient activities and workshops are organised throughout each week of the duration of the campaign. Ambient activities include potato peeling, sourdough bread making, herb bundling, spice grinding, grain milling and tea making. Bookable workshops invite customers, among other things, to learn how to weave in the traditional way using a foot-and-hand operated weaving mill, make clay objects and make hand-made costumes. All ambient activities and workshops are supervised and led by expert makers and dedicated food anthropologists acting as hosts within the house. A Home For All is only accessible by ringing the rustic manual doorbell at the entrance of the house (via the lower ground floor of the London store). Customers will be required to remove their shoes and switch off all their electronic mobile devices and put them in a fabric backpack provided on entering the house.

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre 19th May - 16th September

A London summertime institution the glorious Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre returns for its 2017 Summer Season this month, kicking off with On the Town, directed by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie. Set in the picturesque Royal Park, its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,250 seats, yet those who attend say it is one of the most intimate. Over 140,000 people attend the four annual productions shown between May and September, with many seeing their very first theatre production at the event. The magical atmosphere is created by the buzz of people setting up hampers on the picnic lawn, drinking Pimm’s in the bar as the fairy light twinkle in the trees before settling down to for yet another remarkable performance. Built upon a core of outstanding dramatic credentials, the aim of the theatre is to present bold and dynamic productions that stimulate the senses. Weather and climate add to the experience, making the relationship between performer, text and audience a truly unique event at every performance. On the programme this year are two Charles Dickens titles, A Tale of Two Cities adapted by Matthew Dunster and directed by Timothy Sheader and secondly, Oliver Twist, which has been created for everyone aged six and over, adapted by Anya Reiss and directed by Caroline Byrne. Jesus Christ Superstar, winner of the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical in the Evening Standard Awards, and a sell-out success in 2016, will also return and run until 16th September, giving audiences one final chance to see the production in its original home.

Sundance Film Festival London 1st - 4th June

Bringing four days of original film, Sundance London returns to Picturehouse Central early this month. The UK leg of America's indie film festival founded by Robert Redford in 1987 will showcase films screened at the Utah-based film festival in January. With screenings celebrating independent filmmakers, the festival presents a series of both UK and world premieres. This year's line-up includes 13 feature films such as A Ghost Story, starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, and Beatriz at Dinner, starring Salma Hayek. Directed by Miguel Arteta, Beatriz, an immigrant from a poor town in Mexico, has drawn on her innate kindness to build a career as a health practitioner. Doug Strutt (John Lithgow) is a cutthroat, self-satisfied billionaire. When these two opposites meet at a dinner party, their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same. Festival passes and individual tickets on sale now. Find out more at picturehouses.com/sundance Sundance Film Festival London, Picturehouse Central, 7-14 Coventry Street, London W1D 7DH

“Haute Couture is like an orchestra whose conductor is Balenciaga. We other couturiers are the musicians and we follow the direction he gives.” Christian Dior

Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion at the V&A 27 May 2017 – 18 February 2018

This May, the V&A will open the first ever UK exhibition exploring the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga and his profound and continuing influence on modern fashion. It will be the first of its kind to look at his unique approach to making and will showcase pieces by his protégés and contemporary designers working in the same innovative way today. The exhibition marks the centenary of the opening of Balenciaga’s first fashion house in San Sebastian and the 80th anniversary of the opening of his famous fashion house in Paris. Rather than a retrospective, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will focus in detail on the latter part of Balenciaga’s long career in the 1950s and 1960s, arguably one of his most creative periods as ‘the master’ of haute couture. It was during these years that he not only dressed some of the most iconic women of the time, but also introduced revolutionary shapes including the tunic, the sack, ‘baby doll’ and shift dress – all of which remain style staples today. Highlights will include ensembles made by Balenciaga for

Hollywood actress Ava Gardner, dresses and hats belonging to socialite and 1960s fashion icon Gloria Guinness, and pieces worn by one of the world’s wealthiest women, Mona von Bismarck, who commissioned everything from ballgowns to gardening shorts from the couturier. Over 100 garments and 20 hats, many of which have never been on public display before, will be shown, along with archive sketches, patterns, photographs, fabric samples and catwalk footage revealing Balenciaga’s uncompromising creativity. In addition xrays, animated patterns and short films on couturemaking processes will uncover the hidden details that made his work so exceptional making this a must for any fashionista. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion opens on 27 May 2017 and will be accompanied by a new V&A publication and a series of related events, courses and creative workshops. Advance booking is advised - this can be done in person at the V&A; online at vam.ac.uk/balenciaga; or by calling 0800 912 6961 (booking fee applies).

WATCHES

More Than Just Fabric and Fashion The watch world has forever been subject to fashion brands imposing their name in an otherwise unrelated world from whence they came, but the tables have been gradually turning with a number of these luxurious names now designing, developing and even producing their own mechanical timepieces in-house. In other words, they have become full-blown watch makers with the added benefit of possessing a substantial following thanks to their name. Watch out horological world, the fashion brands are on the charge. Renowned for their exquisite leather work and a rich history dating back to the 1930’s in watchmaking, Hermès doesn’t necessarily fall under the same umbrella as most fashion brands joining the party, however their latest piece is something to be admired. Hermès time cultivates the “extravagant” idea of reconciling rigorous discipline with whimsical fancy. It takes a deft ability for handling paradoxes to imagine that the calling of a watch should be to kindle our emotions. Such is, however, the purpose of Slim d’Hermès L’heure impatiente, endowed with a complication that invites you to look forward to an upcoming moment. The jubilant ritual consists of setting the counter of the watch to the time of the eagerly awaited event that will take place in less than 12 hours. An hour before it occurs, the mechanical hourglass is set in motion at 6 o’clock on the dial. This complication is an exquisite torture

that culminates when the single note rings out, its lasting, velvetysmooth sound delightfully modulated for the wearer’s ears only. The playful and quirky ‘Impatient Hour’ complication is based on this companionable rapport, in a module just 2.2 mm thick. Making their first appearance at the World Watches and Jewellery Show - now known as Baselworld - just over 10 years ago with the Chiffre Rouge collection, Dior have grown their timepiece offering with some functional yet incredibly stylish watches. Originally created in 2004, Chiffre Rouge displays a graphic reinterpretation of the Dior Homme ideas. The asymmetric design of its case, (which concentrates its controls on the wider right hand side of the watch – the guilloché winder and pushbuttons for the chronograph versions), the alternating colours of black and red which also tint the glass on the case-back or are interspersed on some elements like the crown, the date, a hand or

18

WATCHES some pushbuttons. The collection offers 100% automatic timepieces and this striking example is one of the best. Launched in 2015, this version of the Chiffre Rouge was released in a limited edition of 100 pieces. Thanks to the Elite 682 movement by Zenith manufacture, it is equipped with the collections first small complication, a second time zone whose hand is adjusted by simply pressing on the pushbutton. There are two other small complications: the date, appearing in red in a window at 3 ‘o’clock and a small second in its very own dial at 9 ‘o’clock. With a widened face and slightly slimmer watchcase, the timepiece retains its original asymmetric style thanks to the pushbutton at 10 ‘o’clock. Despite their humble beginnings in the watch industry, there are now plenty of players from the fashion world that have reached a level of watchmaking that just can’t be ignored. Largely focused on French brands thanks to the incredibly high number of luxury names to come from the country, this advance in watch craft has been a seemingly natural progression for most. With the inevitable backing from higher order owners such as LVMH and collaboration with existing watchmakers under the umbrella, these brands have been able to jump-start their collections to a level worthy of any watch show in Switzerland. Chanel, possibly the most globally recognised luxury handbag name, has for many years been creating equally iconic watches such as the J12. This is a brand that, despite such widespread recognition, remains out of reach for the many, and the same can be applied to their incredible watches. Launched last year, Monsieur de Chanel perfectly represents the brands design ethos and is specifically created for men. Providing the first ever inhouse movement, this watch is not only beautiful, but offers something never before seen from Chanel, complete with a retrograde minute jumping hour movement, the result of a five year project.

Numerology has always been important to Chanel and this retrograde minute has a 240 degree dial allowing the numerals to be seen easily. Typically in the watch industry dials of minute retrogrades are ·180 degrees as the force is too powerful for the minute hand to withstand. However this movement is built to control this as well as supplying enough power to spring the hour and minute together as well as provide a three day power reserve. All the elements of the movement have deliberately been finished in different shades of black allowing the depth of the piece and elements to be seen individually. There are hidden codes within the movement. The comet can be seen within the balance as well as the Place Vendome on the buckle and hour casing. Calibre 1 has the lion stamped on the movement, as well as the buckle and crown. All Chanel movements going forward will be black, and have the lion shown on the complication. Available in 40 mm dial in white gold £24,500 and beige gold £23,250 (limited to 150 pieces per model) with brushed gold casing. The alligator strap is lined with calfskin to make it more wearable, comfortable and durable.

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering why the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms collection doesn’t enjoy as cult a following as Rolex’s Submariner or even some of the older Tudor models. Typically, a first of any kind tends to garner the recognition and lay the foundation for those who come after. This collection has somewhat flown under the radar yet remains one of the most important tool watches ever made, especially as it is still in production with a clear identity of its function. As with Omega’s Speedmaster, the Fifty Fathoms was built to purpose, not fashion and fulfilled an idea when no one else could execute the necessary requirements. In an era before electronic equipment provided another source of accuracy, the Fifty Fathoms watch could have genuinely been the difference between life and death. The origins of this collection have been told countless times but a short recap will justify why it is so important in the history of military timepieces. Appropriately titled “Frogmen” were the

combat diving division of most militaries, trained to provide the most effective arsenal in an incredibly hostile and temperamental environment. One of the oldest and most famous, surprisingly one might say, was the French contingent. Founded in 1952 and led by Captain Robert “Bob” Malrubier & Lieutenant Claude Aspirant Riffant; a request was made for a diving tool watch that could not only survive the pressure of depth under water but also provide assistance in indicating oxygen levels and ultimately legibility in often murky surroundings. Given the nature of what the watch was being made for, it was imperative it would be fit for purpose. Unlike the Speedmaster Moonwatch, where ASA tested a number of brands with only Omega passing all the tests, Blancpain were the only company to deliver on the requests made by the French military. The CEO of Blancpain at the time was Jean Jacques Fiechter, an avid diver and potentially took this task as a labour of love over simply a desire to create a product. The collection was named after the fact the watch could resist pressure up to Fifty Fathoms, approximately 300 feet and a record at the time. Furthermore, at 42mm, it was much larger than the typical size of the time with very legible detailing, especially under water. A rotating bezel in turn allowed the divers to gauge the extent to which they had remaining oxygen left, all functions we would simply expect now from a diving watch. However, one important point of note, especially applicable to the modern market also is that the watch did not have a screw down crown. Due to a patent on that particular facility, Blancpain developed a double gasket and o-ring system that ensured the water resistance dispelling the myth of the necessity for a screw down crown to guarantee water resistance. Blancpain provided further advancement in this field as the collection gained momentum. In 1957, the Mil-Spec 1 was released with a small circular emblem added made up of a chemical composition that could detect the presence of moisture

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

WATCHES by changing to a darker colour thus protecting the watch and ensuring the diver does not rely on a potentially faulty device. In 2017, a tribute to the Mil-Spec will be introduced in a 500 piece limited series as pictured left. A few different cases were created for the Fifty Fathoms over the years alongside a name change for the American market to Tornek Rayville as war time propaganda lay emphasis on home grown product. These older models often carry great value on the collectors market, especially if they retain the majority of their original case and dial construction. The tribute models are now similarly sought after. In 2013, Blancpain introduced the Bathyscaphe collection to the Fifty Fathoms line up. Despite being oversized in the fifties, the watch had grown to a diameter of 46mm in recent years that was proving too large for some markets. The Bathyscape model aimed to revert the design back to mimic the original series and return the case size to a more modest 43mm. amed after a submersible type underwater vehicle, the collection has been received well by enthusiasts and new fans of the brands with a softer aesthetic

than the Fifty Fathoms with satin finished cases and sunburst effect dials. otably, this is the collection where Blancpain have also experimented with new materials like ceramic cases, liquid metal bezels and ATO straps to achieve a true military look. Besides the Tribute to Mil-spec model, the Bathyscaphe collection is also reinvented in a 38mm case size for 2017. There is no argument that the Rolex Submariner is king in terms of novelty and value retention but for those who appreciate just how colourful the history of watches is, especially in military fields; the Fifty Fathoms provides a welcome balance to a field dominated by advertising over substance. Blancpain have only ever produced mechanical timepieces, developed in-house with a focus on function. For example, despite the outward simplicity of the Fifty Fathoms, the movement offers a five day power reserve once fully wound! As with most functional items, the product doesn’t always scream out for attention but I would definitely recommend visiting us or another Blancpain agent and discovering the collection for yourself‌I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

Sofitel Paris Baltimore Tour Eiffel | RMS Queen Mary 2

SOFITEL PARIS BALTIMORE TOUR EIFFEL

A Weekend in Paris Just two and a half hours from London on the Eurostar or one by plane, Paris is one of the easiest European hotspots to visit for the weekend. As a result of its iconic popularity, there is an abundance of accommodation to choose from. With each hotel keen to demonstrate a touch of French style whilst offering something unique, it is often hard to choose. Making life a little easier is the ideally located Hotel Baltimore Paris. estled among some of the most beautiful districts of Paris, just moments from the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, the Sofitel Paris Baltimore Tour Eiffel delivers a luxurious base from which to enjoy this romantic city. Following a sleek refurbishment, the Baltimore now boasts an inviting reception area and is a perfect example of a Parisian residence with an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Housed in a typically Parisian townhouse dating back to the end of the 19th Century combining French hospitality and Parisian chic, there are few places that offer such an authentic experience in such a contemporary way. Just a short walk from all of the major sights, the hotel is ideally located on Avenue Kl ber for a quick weekend break. With the Arc de Triomphe at one end and the Trocadéro at the other, Avenue Kléber provides the perfect spot to start and end your tour of Paris. Start by heading to the iconic Arc de Triomphe and admire not only the impressive structure, but the manic and seemingly irrational driving that occurs on a daily basis around it. This will

put you right at the end of the city’s most famous road. Soak up the lively atmosphere as you meander down the Champs Elysées trying not to venture in to every shop, passing the Grand Palais as you head towards the impressive Jardin des Tuileries. If you are one for fashion history or simply enjoy the pinnacle of luxury brands, now would be a good time to take a slight detour away from the Champs Elysées to the quiet and inconspicuous Rue Cambon. As famous in the fashion industry as the Eiffel Tower is to the world, Rue Cambon is home to the origins of Chanel. Still housed in the original apartment building where Coco began her incredible story, Chanel Cambon is a must see for any fashion followers or fans of the brand. Once you have had your luxury brand fill, return to the gardens to continue your journey to one of the most outstanding architectural additions to the city, the Louvre. Regardless of whether you are an art fan or otherwise, this has to be on the list of sights to see. The building itself can provide plenty to observe and enjoy despite not venturing inside - queues can get incredibly long

TRAVEL

and take up valuable time from your weekend, so it is best to plan ahead if you are hoping to get inside to see the treasures within. There is plenty more to see, so don’t worry about not making the most of it if you choose not to enjoy the interior space of the Louvre. Just a little further along the Seine you will come across an island nestled in the middle of the river. It may seem familiar to you, which wouldn’t be surprising considering the number of films it has featured, but you probably can’t put your finger on it. This is Ile de la Cit . Still none the wiser It is home to the incredible otre-Dame Cathedral. Take some time to enjoy the peace and tranquility that this magnificent building offers and restore your energy from the days adventures. Continue across the river to the South side and you can begin the return leg of you tour as you head back towards possibly the most iconic structure in Europe, the Eiffel Tower. By the time you reach Champ de Mars - the park area at the base of the tower - it will likely be heading towards sunset or beyond, but that’s really not a problem. Staying at the Baltimore, you are just 5 minutes from a view from the other side of the river, so you can enjoy it in the daylight at any time. It is always full of life with people from around the world traveling to see this amazing structure, just try and avoid the inevitable sellers pushing their Eiffel Tower models and other Paris memorabilia on you. After a long and eventful day, you simply have to hop back over the river using the perfectly positioned Pont

d’I na bridge, walk up through the Torcad ro gardens and back along Avenue Kl ber where the bar staff will be ready and waiting to provide you with the perfect glass of wine from their impressive menu. Freshen up in your chic room or suite before heading back downstairs for a magnifique modern menu in the fresh faced Carte Blanche restaurant. Serving up French cuisine and focusing on authentic ingredients, Chef Jean-Philippe Perol has created a unique menu which engages its guests. There is an option to dine two ways, straight from the menu or of course ‘Carte Blanche’ where the chef will create a dish to your taste using the core ingredient on the menu. This is not only a great way to engage with the people behind your food, but a fantastic way to enjoy a truly unique meal. After you have had your fill of delectable dishes such as shredded crab with courgette, curry, basil and garlic confit and free-range quail roasted with tarragon, confit legs, baked peas and little gem lettuce, you will of course have the option to indulge in some fine French cheese, the ideal accompaniment to more of their spectacular wine. You will undoubtedly be feeling the strain from the day following around 10km of walking - it sounds like a lot, but you don’t notice when you’re having fun Thankfully, your bedroom awaits just upstairs. Collapse in to the plump mattress and nestle your head in to your comfortable pillows for a much needed good nights sleep. Choose from 103 rooms and 28 suites ranging from a classic room with queen size bed to the Eiffel Suite with king-size bed, separate lounge and view of the Eiffel Tower. Prices start at around £235.00 per night. Following a good nights sleep, you will be refreshed and revitalised ready for another day in Paris. As a result of the ‘major sight tour’ the day before, you will be free to enjoy everything else that this great city has to offer. Escape the bustle through quaint side streets, take the metro to anywhere in the city to save your legs from another day of walking or simply relax at one or two of the countless caf s, restaurants and bars across the Capital to soak up the atmosphere. There is so much to see and do in Paris, but thanks to its ease, you can see a lot in a weekend which means that when you return, you have even more time to focus on the bits you didn’t get to see. For a fan of the favourites, the Sofitel Paris Baltimore Tour Eiffel really is perfectly placed and definitely worth experiencing.

Queen Mary 2’s World Tour

Propelled along by Rolls Royce, Cunard’s flagship ocean liner, RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is a wonder of the great seas. Built at a cost of almost £90 million, across two years, Cunard’s 1 1,400-tonne flagship Queen Mary 2 is almost twice as large as the original Queen Mary and more than double the size of the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2). Having undergone a refit last June in Hamburg, the ship returned to Southampton restored, transformed and remastered. The new design was years in the making yet took just weeks to fit. World-class designers were called upon to take the QM2 into the future while also honouring her illustrious past. The refit has seen the addition of 0 new staterooms, including the liner’s first single staterooms, as well as a stylish new space to relax, drink and dine while listening to live music, the Carinthia Lounge, and the line’s first wine cellar at sea where you can become a master connoisseur with recognised wine qualifications. The attentive crew are there to help. Working under the famous Cunard White Star Service, your stateroom steward will greet you by name and it’s always warm and sincere rather than forced. One of the newly refitted areas include the Grills Suites. Large and airy with beautiful terraces, the suites allow guests to enjoy the very best of Cunard with a dedicated stateroom steward and access to the exclusive lounges and terraces. With ten dining options, guests are spoilt for choice. Open allday and late into the evening, Kings Court occupies the majority of Deck 7 offering buffet style breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also afternoon tea. From smoked salmon and eggs to pancakes, waffles and fresh fruit in the morning; to Thai curries, fresh King Prawns, and fillets of fish and beef in the evenings, guests are well catered for and there is certainly something for everyone here. In the evening, a large section of the informal restaurant transforms into other dining options that work on a rotational basis. From Italian and Pan Asian to Indian and American, the other restaurants add another dimension to your journey. Elsewhere, guests will find the traditional Golden Lion Club pub, Carinthia Lounge, Boardwalk Caf , fine French dining Verandah, and 1347 seat three-storey Britannia Restaurant which is where the prestigious Captain’s black tie dinner take place under the beautiful Art-Deco style ceiling. Guests staying in the exclusive grills will also have access to the 200 seat Queens Grill and 18 seat Princess Grill depending on which category they are occupying. The finest food and wines make every meal something to savour in the Grill restaurants, where only the very best will do and as well as fresh-from-port speciality options of fresh fillets of fish, guests can also choose off the a la carte menu boasting a mix of timeless classics and innovative twists. After all that indulging, you may find yourself wanting to work out especially while at sea - and the state of the art gym on board is a great place to start. Failing that, and ideal on a sunny day, the outdoor fitness classes are fantastic for interreacting with other guests and even just walking around the teak deck on the 345m long ship, which equates to the length of almost four football pitches, is fantastic exercise. Other sport facilities include two stateof-the-art golf simulators, putting green, shuffleboard, deck games, a giant chess board and a paddle tennis court. There is so much to see and do on the liner that you could spend a whole afternoon simply exploring, from the largest library at sea to the bridge where you can get a view of the Captain and his

crew at work navigating their way across the water. What better way to enjoy the tranquillity of the ocean while also bettering your health, and of course allowing for another guilt-free cocktail at the Commodore Club! Of course, you are on holiday so you may prefer to spend your well-earned break relaxing. Especially as the days off ship can contain a fair amount of walking in themselves. You can lie out in the sun at one of the four pools, including one with a retractable glass roof, and eight whirlpool spas or head along to the state-of-the-art spa. Canyon Ranch Spa onboard offers a variety of treatments in its 24 treatment rooms, from detoxifying scrubs and wraps to specialist facials and massages, that are bound to leave you feeling revived and relaxed. You can even opt for a full fitness and body composition analysis to learn about your endurance, body mass and hydration levels to really take the treatment home with you. The spa also boasts its very own Aqua Therapy Centre, offering a massage pool, aromatic steam room, Finnish and Herbal saunas, whirlpool, sensory showers and a reflexology basin to energise tired feet. If retail therapy is more your thing then the tax-free Mayfair shops above the Grand Lobby are ideal to pick up any gifts, fragrances and alcohol. Open until late and offering a variety of brands from Aspinal of London and Barbour to fine jewellery such as Cartier, the shops also stock items you may have forgotten for your trip such as black ties for the formal evenings and toiletries. Cunard has partnered with luxury Italian accessory company Furla to create their very

own ‘Flap’ for the customisable My Play Furla initiative. First you choose the leather base of your delicate crossbody bag before simply styling it with your desired flap and snapping it onto the base. This clever and versatile method allows you to create a different look each time and the flaps are relatively cheap priced from just £55.00 and up meaning the options for your new bag are endless. Cunard’s flap is a beautiful gold shade which looks really striking when added to the soft cream base. Speaking of Cunard exclusives and coinciding with the remastering of the ship, Cunard has launched its very own sake with Japanese brewery, Akashi -Tai Sake. Located in Akashi, one of the major fishing towns in western Japan, the Yonezawa family began artisanal sake production in 1886 for the local populace using only the finest local ingredients. Over the years, the family has expanded and modernised their sake brewing and now produce and sell a wide range of premium sakes still using only the finest ingredients and often still produced locally. Cunard’s own Junmai Ginjo Genshu is in limited production and comes presented in a beautiful gift box with an Akashi-Tai sake glass. Guests can also enjoy a pairing of the new sake, as well as some of Akashi-Tai’s other fine sakes, paired with the new fine French dining restaurant, Verandah. Another new addition onboard is the Japanese Afternoon Tea where you can even make your own green tea. It is exclusives such as these that help make the Cunard experience onboard so memorable. Not only does the Queen Mary 2 boast the largest ballroom at sea but also the only

Oblix introduces the London Afternoon Tea Enjoy Oblix’s brand new London Afternoon Tea while sitting up in the clouds and admiring the capital’s fantastic skyline. Paying homage to the iconic capital city and inspired by the very best London has to offer, Oblix has designed a menu using a blend of ingredients sourced from favourite local purveyors found throughout London’s eclectic mix of boroughs. The truly beautiful London Afternoon Tea takes guests on a culinary journey throughout and beyond the city. From Hackney and the E Bakehouse where the best flour for all the scones was found, to Cannon & Cannon’s of Lambeth for their cured angus beef, and even areas further afield, to East Sussex which provided the delightfully sour sea buckthorn for the meringue tart. The menu incorporates ingredients from all over London, including warming chai spices from the famous Brick Lane market and honeycomb from local bees in Harrow. The London Afternoon Tea at Oblix includes a delicious set of sandwiches, with one standout sandwich in particular; the duck egg & truffle mayonnaise sandwich. We couldn’t get enough. The finest duck eggs are sourced from Russell’s of Smithfield, an artisan family butcher service based in Islington since 1934 while other delights include tea classics such as the ham, Alexandra cheese, celeriac and mustard sandwich, using a high quality cheese from the Urban Cheesemaker’s industrial estate in Tottenham, orth London, and salmon and cucumber. Those with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed, with freshly baked scones served with a variety of seasonal jams from around London Fields, including cranberry scones with ingredients bought from local Borough Market. Pastry Chef Julienne Philippe and Executive Chef Marcus Eaves drew inspiration from the classic Cadbury’s chocolate bar to create the delicious crunchie chocolate pecan bar with honey from urban beekeepers in Putney, SouthWest London. The tea is a great option for those who don’t like their sweets too sugary. The menu is a great balance of tastes, with none too rich or too sickly. Sakura at Sake no Hana Until the 10th June, Sake no Hana, the Japanese restaurant from Hakkasan Group, are celebrating the arrival of Spring and the Japanese cherry blossom season with an art installation created by renowned British artist Rebecca Louise Law. The stunning installation envelops the ceiling of the restaurant, creating clouds of natural, preserved white flowers each entwined with Law’s signature copper wire. The artwork honours the Japanese sakura season and Kengo Kuma’s architectural design giving guests a feeling of tranquillity as if sitting beneath blossom trees. The installation has been specially commissioned to respond to the space. Sake no Hana is awash with linear bamboo and cypress wood giving the feel of a futuristic forest and Law’s installation brings a secondary layer of nature to the restaurant. During this special time Sake no Hana are offering a limited edition sakura menu expertly curated by Executive Head Chef Hideki Hiwatashi, in addition to the à la carte menu featuring an exclusive cocktail called ‘Hanami’ using Akashi-Tai Honjozo sake, Belsazar white vermouth, cherry liqueur and lavender bitters. The menu features miso soup, bento box featuring a selection of nigiri and maki rolls, a choice of charcoal grill dishes such as Sumiyaki rib eye beef with chilli ponzu and Champagne yuzu miso salmon alongside a sakura inspired dessert featuring a smooth milk chocolate mousse complemented by a sour cherry insert, fresh cherries and lightened by sakura tea jellies. Hiwatashi was inspired by his own experiences of sakura in Japan when creating the menu, saying: It’s traditional during sakura to share bento boxes underneath the blossom and experience a variety of different sushi. I have emulated this within the Sake no Hana sakura bento giving guests a traditional Japanese experience as I had as a child in Hokkaido throughout Spring . The collaboration offers guests the chance to experience a beautiful artwork inspired by hanami, the centuries-old Japanese tradition of celebrating the cherry blossom, whilst enjoying modern authentic Japanese cuisine in the heart of Mayfair. Rebecca Louise Law’s installation and the limited edition sakura menu will be available at Sake no Hana until 10th June, Monday to Saturday for £37 per person. Motu Indian Kitchen In collaboration with JKS restaurants and in association with Deliveroo, the family behind two Michelin starred Indian restaurants, Gymkana and Trishna as well as award-winning Hoppers in Soho, have recently launched a new, home style delivery only service in Canary Wharf. Already established in Camberwell and Battersea and acknowledging the fact that the British Indian takeaway is much loved by many., Motu undoubtedly delivers restaurant quality food. Its name is derived from the affectionate Hindi term for ‘Fat man’ and pays homage to the dabbawalas who delivered packed meals to workers in Indian cities. These workers were the inspiration for Motu’s Feast Boxes which are available on the menu and not to be missed. Starting from £16 for a box for one which includes one classic main Indian curry of your choice or the most popular meal deal for two at £25 which has two main dishes and a selection of sides and condiments, you can add other dishes to your order and mix and match to create sharing platters. The lamb shank is particularly delicious and melts off the bone. Using only the freshest and finest quality ingredients, portions are generous but with all the delicious choices on offer it’s hard not to over order. Order via Deliveroo | motuindiankitchen.com

Vinoteca Marylebone For a relaxed evening of great food and drink, head to popular Vinoteca in the heart of Marylebone. When the owners of this truly atmospheric and modern venue opened their first wine bar in Farringdon in 200 they were originally inspired by the wine bars of Spain and Italy. They successfully continued this theme in the years that followed when they opened more new wine bars in King’s Cross, Soho, Farringdon, Chiswick and of course, Marylebone. The restaurant at Vinoteca Marylebone offers an ever-evolving Modern European menu serving simple yet imaginative food which is carefully sourced to create fresh, innovative seasonal dishes. Although there is a private dining room downstairs, the lively, main restaurant upstairs (which includes a stylish, polished bar area with walls of wine on display) serves lunch and dinner as well as bar snacks and nibbles. There is a meat selection consisting of cured meat imported from Jabugo in Spain or a selection of eal’s ard cheeses served with house chutney and whole grain biscuits as well as Sicilian olives and stone ground organic bread with olive oil. With a fantastic assortment to choose from, a starter on the main menu is the ever-popular, melt in your mouth Berkshire pork belly served with Vinoteca’s very own twist of chicory, shallots and chilli. Their signature

dish is the marinated and deliciously succulent grilled steak bavette served with triple cooked chips, watercress and horseradish or try the equally delicious roast whole lemon sole served with Monk’s Beard and a side of hispi cabbage. However, as this seasonal menu is ever changing, you may find that the fish dishes may vary from day to day. Seared Scallops, Cauliflower Puree and Curry Oil

ngredients

er es

For the scallops: 6 hand-dived large scallops (about 180g), cleaned pinch of sea salt | 1 tbsp olive oil | squeeze of lime juice | 1 tbsp curry oil (from below) For the curry oil: 1 tsp Madras curry powder | 100ml extra virgin olive oil, warmed 1 lemongrass stalk, bruised and finely chopped 2 ka r lime leaves, finely sliced grated zest and juice of ½ lime | pinch of sea salt For the cauliflower pur e: 6 g unsalted butter large cauliflower (2 0g), cut into small florets 2 pinches of sea salt 2 0ml whole milk | 1 tsp lemon juice For the seared cauliflower slices: 2 tbsp olive oil 16 fine cauliflower slices (200g) | pinch of sea salt (optional)

Method To prepare the curry oil: In a small frying pan over a medium heat, toast the curry powder for 5 minutes then add to the warm olive oil with the lemongrass, lime leaves and lime zest. Stir and set aside to infuse in a warm place for 1 hour. Strain the oil through a fine sieve into a bowl and add the salt and lime juice. Cover and set aside until needed. To make the cauliflower pur e: In a large saucepan, melt 25g butter over a medium heat and gently sweat the cauliflower for 3 minutes, seasoning with the salt.

Add the milk, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes until tender. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cauliflower to a blender and pur e with just enough of the cooking liquor to make a smooth purĂŠe. In another pan, heat the remaining 40g butter to the beurre noisette stage. Stir into the cauliflower pur e with the lemon juice, then check the seasoning; keep warm. To sear the cauliflower slices: Heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over a medium heat, then add the cauliflower slices and sear for 1 minute on one side until golden brown; they should be half raw with a wonderful crunch. Transfer to a warm plate, season with a pinch of salt, if needed, and keep warm. To cook the scallops: Season the scallops with the salt. Heat the olive oil in a medium, heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the scallops, flat side down, and sear for 1 minutes until golden brown, then turn the scallops over and continue to cook for 30 seconds. Remove the pan from the heat and deglaze with a squeeze of lime juice and 1 tbsp of the curry oil. Transfer the scallops and the juices to a warm plate, season with another pinch of salt, if needed, and keep warm. To serve: Put two spoonfuls of cauliflower pur e on each plate and arrange the scallops in the middle. Lay the caramelised cauliflower around the outside of the plate and drizzle the deglazed pan juices over. Garnish with baby salad leaves, curry oil and chopped chives.

Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass

with Zoran Peric

Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks concepts.

In the month of May, London is awash with cherry blossom and a sea of pink blossom adorn trees across the capital. Cherry blossom is a special time in Japan known as Sakura, literally the flowering of cherry blossom. Cherry blossoms are a symbolic flower of the spring, a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. While in the UK we have a month of bank holidays in May, in Japan, businesses change their hours to allow their workers to enjoy ‘Hanami’, which translates as ‘flower viewing’, and is the ancient Japanese custom of celebrating the transient beauty of flowers. So do as the Japanese do, and sit under a cherry blossom this spring and take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the season. For a real Japanese experience, party underneath the cherry blossom at ROKA’s Sakura cherry blossom installation, returning this year with a new menu of stunning Suntory Japanese whisky cocktails. There are three cocktails on the ROKA menu suited to all tastes.

The Sakura Sour cocktail featuring Hibiki Japanese Harmony, kumquat, peach and sakura can be enjoyed with the traditional carved ice ball. Or why not sample the Cask old fashioned cocktail at ROKA, featuring the amazaki Distiller’s reserve, sobacha syrup, sherry and plum sake. This is a great example of a Suntory whisky classic and is a sweet and strong cocktail guaranteed to get your loved ones talking. Finally, if you are looking to show off your international palate, why not try the Kyuri Highball. This simple cocktail is made of Hakshu Distiller’s Reserve, cucumber, rice shochu and soda water, combining the verdant notes of Hakushu whisky with the freshness of cucumber, offering a light serve perfectly suited to the season and for enjoying against the setting of the beautiful cherry blossom installation. Return of the GT3 Porsche’s iconic 911 has maintained its position at the top of the sportscar market for quite some time and despite very few aesthetic alterations throughout its history, it remains as eye-catching today as it ever has. There is one way to get even more attention driving one and that is to get your hands on the motorsport inspired 911 GT3, a car designed for use on both road and track. The Porsche 911 GT3 delivers motorsport-like performance, a systematic lightweight construction and an unfiltered driving experience. In the latest generation of this radical 911, the connection between everyday driving and the racetrack is amplified. A four-litre flat six engine lies at the heart of this monster,

an extremely high-revving naturally aspirated engine with 07 PS which remains virtually unchanged from the thoroughbred 911 GT3 Cup racing car. A large proportion of Porsche GT drivers are likely to take their sportscar for a spin on the racetrack, and this is where the new 911 GT3 really comes into its own thanks to its weight-to-power ratio of 3.88 kg kW. Combined with a seven-speed double-clutch PDK transmission as standard, which has been specifically tuned for use in the GT, and a weight of just 1,430 kg with a full tank of fuel, the GT3 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a staggering 3.4 seconds boasting a top speed of 197 mph. For proponents of

PORSCHE 911 GT3

pure unadulterated driving, you can also opt for a six-speed sports manual gearbox. The chassis of the new 911 GT3 benefits from Porsche’s racing experience and its tuning has been reworked for even better driving dynamics. The two-seater sits around 2 mm lower than the 911 Carrera S. In addition to the further refined basic design, the chassis also boasts superior handling characteristics, thanks in large part to the active rear-axle steering. Depending on the speed, it steers either in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving the vehicle’s agility and stability. The dynamic engine mounts and the rear differential lock also boost

the car’s driving dynamics. When it comes to its appearance, the 911 GT3 leaves little doubt as to its purpose. The dominant carbon rear wing emphasises the fact that the sportscar’s form is determined by aerodynamics again visible with the lightweight front end and front spoiler which have been optimised for an even better airflow. The aerodynamic enhancement is also evident on the lightweight rear end with exhaust air openings and on the new diffuser. Inside the space is tailored to the GT3 driving experience. A simple GT sports steering wheel with a diameter of 360mm is immediately evident which actually originates from the 918 Spyder.

YOUR DRIVE

Both the driver and passenger experience the dynamics in Porsche Sports seats Plus with enhanced seat side bolsters and mechanical fore aft adjustment for added security through corners. As the 911 GT3 is traditionally a two-seater, the seat pans in the rear are covered. If you are looking for a road-to-track car that makes a statement whilst offering the home comforts of your regular sports car, then there is little point continuing the search. Many have tried to fault the 911 over the years, but it has stood the test of time and now with their latest ber-edition, there is little doubt that Porsche have got it right. porsche.co.uk

Character and Class 1954 Jaguar XK140 Roadster

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Successor to the K120, Jaguar’s spectacular Le Mans winner, the K140 brought with it some distinctive styling alterations along with an update in the engine department. Offering 190bhp, the K140 boasted lightening speeds for the time of over 120mph and it did it in style. The iconic front grille paired with standout headlights and bulging wheel arches all combine to create a striking and apparant presence on the road whilst the flowing line running the length of the body adds to the sleek and sporty aesthetic. This stunning example is finished in red coachwork with tan leather interior and chrome wire wheels to complement the stunning chrome front and rear bumpers. It has also received some generous restoration with new carpet and leather, new leather seats and of course a restored 3.4-litre Jaguar engine. A fantastic example of one of Jaguars iconic sports cars and a head turneron any road. This is one of the first K140 models out of the factory and has stood the test of time in spectacular fashion.

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. 2017 is no exception; her design ‘City Living’ has a theme of greening up grey Britain. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com Balcony gardens are not plain sailing. With a little care though they can be really special places; elevated gardens greening the city

Every garden is about planting the right plant in the right conditions. If you make a mistake at ground level it is relatively easy to rectify. Planting at height is about planning and making sure you’ve got it right first time round

1. Weight is something that absolutely has to be borne in mind when placing pots or furniture on balconies. Even small planters can be very heavy and ensuring that your structure can take the weight is vital. If in doubt consult a structural engineer. 2. Elevated terraces have to work hard as they are open to all manner of weather. Rain, wind and cold are worse at altitude so often plants with low structural forms work well for all year round interest. Their shapes don’t catch the wind so easily and consequently they are more stable. 3. If the rain doesn’t drive into your terrace or balcony the likelihood is that it bakes in the summer. Mediterranean plants such as Lavender, Rosemary and herbs will cope with these conditions but will require good drainage. Ensuring the planters are on packers or low feet will really help with this.

SAVILLS

The Value of Outside Space

with Charlie Bubear, Head of Savills Chelsea and Earl’s Court

A recent agent survey carried out by Savills looking at what qualities might add value to a family home in London revealed that a south or south-west facing garden could add up to £50,000 to a property. It’s a clear indicator that when it comes to a garden, or outside space, they’re a serious factor for buyers and one that can attract a significant premium.

As we enter into the Spring market, the importance of outdoor space quickly climbs up a buyers wish list, and gardens are considered much like another room of a property. It’s not uncommon for a buyer to spend as much time and attention inspecting the external space of a property as they would the kitchen. So how can you make sure you are maximising the potential of your garden to prospective buyers? Any unkempt or overgrown areas could impact adversely on price, especially if they give the impression that the garden is hard to manage. Most importantly a garden must be beautifully presented in order to positively impact on the price of your home. As a minimum you should clear the space, cut back any trees and bushes and, if you have one, mow the lawn. As for garden musthaves, much depends on size but a good seating area is always desirable.

Savills Chelsea | 020 7578 9005 | savills.co.uk

SAVILLS

Compartmentalising a garden into different ‘rooms’, with a focal point to catch the eye in each, can create a pleasing illusion of space and therefore works well whatever the plot size. In a smaller patch, carefully arranged flower pots bring vibrancy and personality. Mirrors can also work wonders for tighter spaces making them feel less enclosed, while planting some colour will help draw the eye away from the house and make it feel larger. For some buyers a roof terrace is preferable as they offer a little more privacy and security. Terraces also tend to be easier to maintain, and they often appeal to young professionals who may

not have the time to look after a more established garden. Likewise access to private garden squares also commands a premium; particularly those with a direct entrance, whether through your own private garden or back door from the communal hallway. Families love them as they offer a secure and safe place for children to play, and they are a peaceful haven in the city. Ultimately, you should never underestimate the importance buyers place on outside space. Be sure to keep any garden areas well maintained to ensure your property gives the best first impression.

Our friends in the U.S have been chasing the ‘American Dream’ for some time now, yet we Brits don’t really have a moniker for ‘making it’ in the UK. If we were to coin our version of the ‘British Dream’, we imagine it would be celebrated every time someone took their first steps on the property ladder. First-time buyers play a pivotal role in the UK housing market and represent a key driver of demand. The average age of first-time buyers has been steadily rising over the last few decades as property has been less and less affordable in some parts of the country. However, schemes like shared ownership and Help-tobuy have helped younger people get on the ladder, putting downward pressure on average ages of firsttime buyers.

So what’s the scoop in E14? I have used data from ResiAnalytics which uses affordability measures to calculate the average age of first-time buyers in the local market. The data shows that the average age of a first-time buyer here is 33.9. This is higher than the regional figure of 32, while the national average is 30. The average price of a home in E14 is £571,000, and if you take 10% as a reasonable figure for a deposit for a first home, that means buyers need to stump up around £57,100. Add into the mix average gross earnings of residents in the area, which sit at £36,429, and you can start to see why the picture in our area looks like it does. If you’re thinking of purchasing your first property, visit my office for a friendly chat and we can discuss all the options available. Spencer Fortag

A look at the annual sales charts for the last ten years offers a good indication of market activity within the local area. Patterns are in line with expectations given the nature of our area. While there is nothing too surprising about which type of properties have seen the most transactions, it's useful to see how the market has performed since just before the credit crunch.

How far people travel to work says a lot about the nature of an area. For example if people live and work in market towns there is likely to be a lot more community spirit to experience in daily life. When people are travelling further afield to work, they effectively spend their days on two different communities. It will be interesting to see if community spirit increases as people work more from home.
