For now it is mostly indoor activities that are showing their faces such as the two big events for their respective industries: The Geneva International Motor Show and Baselworld shedding light on the latest from the car and watch worlds. The Wizarding World Expansion This month the incredibly popular Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter will unveil an exciting, permanent expansion dedicated to the Forbidden Forest. The Forbidden Forest may be strictly off-limits to Hogwarts students, but for the first time this March, visitors to the tour are invited to defy Professor Dumbledore’s orders and follow the footsteps of Harry, Ron and Hermione deep into the grounds of the Forbidden Forest. Home to an abundance of creatures, the Forbidden Forest offers shelter and protection to Hippogriffs and Acromantula among many others. It is also well known to beloved half-giant Hagrid in his role as Care of Magical Creatures professor. One of Rubeus Hagrid’s original costumes will be on display, lantern in hand, to welcome visitors through the Hogwarts Gates deep into the forest. Filled with 19 trees each with a diameter of over 12 feet, visitors will walk beneath the giant entwined roots on their journey and will even be able to control the weather using the same techniques created by filmmakers. Amongst the imposing trees, visitors will also encounter a full-size model of Buckbeak, a brand new feature to the tour, and have the opportunity to bow to the majestic creature. They will see up close the incredible detail and craftsmanship that went into creating the magnificent Hippogriff. Each feather had to be individually inserted and glued by the Creature Effects team who were busy adding feathers right up until the final

moment Buckbeak was needed on set for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. As visitors venture deeper into the depths of the forest, they will come face-to-face with Aragog, the Acromantula. Emerging from his dark lair, the enormous spider will appear before visitors along with spiderlings from his family. Created by Nick Dudman, Creature and Make-Up Effects Designer, with help from Production Designer Stuart Craig, Aragog had a leg span of over 18 feet and was even able to crawl out of a hole and deliver dialogue in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Officially opening on Friday 31st March and included in the tour ticket price, the new, must-see expansion has been designed and built by many of the crew members who worked on the hugely successful magical film series including Oscar® and BAFTA winning Production Designer Stuart Craig, Construction Manager Paul Hayes, BAFTA winning Creature and Makeup Effects Designer Nick Dudman and BAFTA winning Special Effects Supervisor John Richardson. Other highlights of the tour include walking through the Great Hall where so many famous scenes were shot, seeing the treasures stored in Dumbledore’s office and strolling down Diagon Alley. ‘The Iris’

2nd March - 7th May NOW Gallery on Greenwich Peninsula will display Law’s latest installation, ‘The Iris’, featuring 10,000 fresh irises that are suspended by a copper wire and appear to float. The Iris installation is intended to immerse the viewer in nature, an experience that is rare within the concrete metropolis. This artwork is a celebration of the Iris, a continued exploration into preservation and the use of flowers as a respected sculptural material. Each flower will dry within the gallery space over time, allowing the viewer to observe the process of preservation and her exploration of ephemerality. ‘I like to capture and cherish small beautiful natural objects to create an artwork that can be observed without the pressure of time. BASELWORLD 2017 Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Armin Strom delivers its interpretation of a phenomenon whose application in watchmaking is so complex it has rarely been attempted in past centuries: that phenomenon is resonance, whereby two balance wheels oscillating in close proximity influence each other and ultimately synchronise. By mutually compensating rate error, they increase the watch’s precision, reduce the negative effects on accuracy of outside factors such as shocks, and conserve energy. Armin Strom offers visual proof of this phenomenon by way of a patented resonance clutch spring that connects the two regulators. They enter into resonance as they rotate in opposite directions. This impressive feat of horological mechanics can be admired on the dial side.

Arnold & Son Nebula Arnold & Son explores the length and breadth of symmetry to give life to the Nebula watch. The holistically designed, skeletonised movement and dial offer a three-dimensional view into the heart of the watch, each element of which has been purposely crafted to achieve perfect symmetry, not only horizontally and vertically but also front and back. At 12 o’clock, twin barrels providing a comfortable 90 hours of power reserve create a striking mirror effect with the small seconds and balance below. Seven triangular bridges radiate from the perimeter to the centre of the dial to form a sculptural movement, like an inverted, exploded star. Indeed, Nebula takes its name from nebulae, an astronomical term to describe a cloud of cosmic gas and dust formed from the debris of exploding stars.

ArtyA Sun Tourbillon 1/1 With its new one-of-a-kind Sun Tourbillon model, ArtyA transform mechanical complexity into an authentic work of art, by staging this fascinating flying tourbillon within its patented guitar-shaped case. Dreamed up by Yvan Arpa and produced by MHC, Manufacture Hautes Complications, it sets the tempo for the small seconds appearing at 6 o’clock, as if suspended in mid-air. Exactly opposite at 12 o’clock sits the barrel with an entirely redesigned bridge. The entire mechanism is fitted inside an X-shaped structure inspired by the struts fitted on the back of guitars for support and reinforcement. This entirely openworked construction houses the entire movement, thereby freeing up all the open parts of the X so as to ensure absolute transparency. Does any watch carry more real historical significance than the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch? Breguet may have created mechanical marvels and industry firsts that are still applicable today while Rolex, Blancpain and Panerai are just the main brands amongst many others whose claim to fame lies with military frogmen. Cartier, Harry Winston and Tiffany are synonymous with the golden years of movie stars and style icons, something modern brands aspire to with modern celebrities but don’t really come close in terms of delivering timeless product or having a respectively timeless star to shine alongside. These achievements are nothing short of glorious and lay testament to the enduring power of style in it its various mediums but in purely watch terms; Omega’s Speedmaster is the only watch quantitively accredited by NASA to go into Space and be part of possibly mankind’s greatest achievement to date. The crossing of this frontier and the subsequent watch to sponsor such an adventure appeals across nationalities and races, it does not conform to fashion or fit a trend, but rather it offers the lay person a tangible claim to understanding the importance of this endeavour and hopefully inspiring them in turn. The Speedmaster’s roots can be traced back to 1957with the first Speedmaster model, named CK2915, which was created with a tachymeter scale on the bezel, a manual aid to help compute time, furthering Omega’s status as the official timekeeper of the olympic Games. This Speedmaster housed the now legendary Calibre 321 developed by Omega and their subsidiary, Lemania. This hand wound calibre was first developed in 19 2 but vitally was upgraded in

19 to include anti-magnetivity and shock resistance that would prove pivotal in the Speedmaster becoming the Moonwatch. Notably, the next generation of this Speedmaster, the CK2998 was introduced in 1957 with a larger diameter of 0mm and then further increased to 2mm in 19 3. This case construction and size remains virtually unchanged to today’s Speedmaster Moonwatch basic models. Remarkably, even the movement is virtually identical to the original. The early Sixties saw the first foray into Space exploration and more importantly, the first manned Space missions. In line with the aforementioned significance of the Speedmaster legacy, even before the watch because the official partner of NASA’s space programme, astronaut Walter Schirra wore his personal CK2998 as he journeyed into Space on 3rd October 19 2. This moment earned the model the moniker First Watch in Space and realised the limited edition CK2998 model released last year that alongside the latest Snoopy edition has revitalised that Speedmaster series. Around this time, NASA also procured various mechanical chronographs from firms such as Breitling, Longines, Rolex and Omega to undergo ualification Test Procedures that would determine their functionality in the inhospitable environment of Space travel. These procedures includes exposure to extreme heat and cold alongside magnetisation and impacts. Upon completion of these tests, NASA officially announced the Omega Speedmaster was the only watch to have passed the tests. Despite this letter of glowing recommendation, Omega were to learn second hand that their watch had actually made it outside the

WATCHES aircraft and into actual Space when a picture appeared showing Astronaut Ed White wearing his Speedmaster on an oversized velcro strap during America’s first ever space walk in June 19 5. The word Professional appeared soon after under the Speedmaster motif on the dial. Four years later on 2nd July 19 9 came the most significant moment in Speedmaster history as first Neil Armstrong, then Buzz Aldrin wearing his Speedmaster took those famous first steps on the Moon’s surface. Just a year earlier, in 19 8, the reliable Calibre 321 that had provide so trustworthy during this time was upgrade to the Calibre 8 1, also produced in conduction with Lemania and equally robust and reliable but cheaper to manufacture in quantity. It is this calibre that still faithfully beats within every Moonwatch sold today. Continuing their partnership with NASA, the Speedmaster was used aboard the fateful Apollo 13 mission to time their boosters ensuring safe return to the Earth’s surface. This performance under such duress earned the Speedmaster the Snoopy award commemorating its use in the field. Omega in turn created the Snoopy Speedmaster that enjoyed a cartoon of the beloved character on the sundial at 9 0’clock. A 201 revolution of the Snoopy Speedmaster delivered the most sought after and valuable modern Omega watch highlighting the power and significance of this collection. Most recently, in the early nineties, the Speedmaster underwent more gruelling tests on the Russian space station MIR making it easily the most tested watch in horological history. The popularity of the Speedmaster series has seen various incarnations of the model from classic representations like the 1957 series to automatic versions of the Moonwatch housing Omega’s Co-Axial Calibre. For 2017, a model highlighting the collections synonymity with the Moon has been released. Although models with moon-phase complications have been released before, none have been delivered quite like this. Firstly,

the watch is powered by the all new Calibre 990 that carries the METAS Master Chronometer Certificate, unique to Omega and showcased under an unparalleled sapphire caseback. This returns us to the testing the Speedmaster model undertook at NASA as the METAS Certification process is open to all but as it measures the entire watch rather than just the movement, Omega have been the only brand to pioneer this new Certificate further attesting the Speedmaster’s credibility. Delivered in a .25mm case in both steel and bi-colour options, a flurry of colour from green to brown adds some fire to the patented Liquid Metal bezels. A limited series with throwback red aluminium bezel is also offered in Platinum. However, the real highlight of this complication is the actual Moon-phase. Omega have always offered great value for money and here, they do not disappoint. The huge moon-phase display uses a microstructure technique on a crystal surface to create an accurate representation of the Moon’s surface including a foot print alluding to those hallowed first steps. Aesthetics aside, the moon-phase is also functionally correct in allowing for the actual monthly 29.5 day cycle as the lunar cycle does not mirror the monthly one exactly. The date is shown within the 9 0’clock sub dial with a small magnifying glass to aid the viewer. 2017 sees the 0th Anniversary of the Speedmaster. There will undoubtedly be limited editions released for this occasion at Baselworld but even without this milestone, the Speedmaster collection offers a modern, well rounded family of watches that can genuinely vouch to enjoying historical significance. The classic Moonwatch, still priced under ,000.00 should be a mainstay in every true collection while the new moonphase models show just far Omega have come in delivering mainstream complications. The last true wilderness on earth that remains uninhabited by human life - other than those conducting research in the sparsely situated bases across the continent - is precisely that, a wilderness. Only accessible through select airports or via ship across the Drake Passage, a notoriously uncomfortable stretch of water running between South America and the Antarctic that takes two days to cross, you would be forgiven for taking the two hour flight from Punta Arenas, Chile. However, this is not without its problems. One thing that becomes immediately apparent before you even lay eyes on the seventh continent is just how remote and unpredictable it really is. ou could find yourself staying in Punta Arenas for longer than first thought thanks to a shift in the weather at the other end. Planning is essential for any expedition, but on a trip to Antarctica, planning will only get you so far, the rest is in the hands of an undeniably beautiful mother nature. Waiting in line at Punta Arenas airport - as soon as the weather allows - to board a plane dressed in penguin decals heading to Antarctica is a surreal experience. It could only be made more so by a large group of individuals waiting for another aeroplane dressed in running gear with Antarctic marathon logos proudly displayed. It certainly adds to the intense anticipation as to what exactly should be expected

on reaching King eorge Island in the South Shetlands at the end of the flight, but nothing will ever prepare you. On arrival, landing on a perfectly manicured gravel runway, we wait patiently alongside the parked penguin plane’ for the following flights to land before being allowed to walk back up the runway to start the real adventure. At the end of the airstrip, we are welcomed by a man who was to become influential beyond imagination. Spending most of the year on board private vessels around the world as an expedition leader, Richard White has one of the sharpest eyes for spotting wildlife and an engaging abundance of knowledge that he is keen to share. Throughout the coming week he would prove to be exceptionally experienced in the field and demonstrate the ideal working relationship with the yacht’s Captain in order to achieve things other ships and expeditions could only dream of. A short walk from the airport finds us at the shoreline and offers a first glimpse of the wilderness beyond and home for the next week, Hanse Explorer. A brief introduction to our lifevests and favourite new toy, the zodiac, and we are on our way across the calm waters of the bay to step aboard Hanse for the first time. Once aboard, the steward team immediately step in to help in any way they can and take care of

TRAVEL the now unnecessary outerwear that was essential just moments before. When sufficiently undressed, we are guided us upstairs to luxurious cabins which will play host to little more than sleeping and storage throughout the expedition as there is already far too much to be seen outside. The yacht immediately gets underway, heading out into the Bransfield Strait and south towards Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands. Due to the weather conditions, 7 days of potential sailing was reduced to , so in order to maximise the potential distance that could be covered heading down the Antarctic Peninsula, there was no time waste. It is important to remember that what goes down has to eventually come back up for the return flight to civilisation, limiting just how far South you are able to venture, but nothing could prepare us for what this yacht was capable of. Fortunately, little time was given to thinking of the return journey as we are politely informed that the first meal on board is ready. A freshly prepared gourmet buffet is waiting in the dining room which features wall-to-wall windows allowing you to soak up the surroundings whilst enjoying a delicious selection of food. Following lunch there is no time to contemplate and digest both the meal and the truly breathtaking landscape as we venture into an area of beautiful, huge icebergs with spectacular juxtaposing features, our first look at penguin life alongside the yacht and a chance sighting - thanks to Richard - of a killer whale pod. Before having time to register just what is happening, the zodiacs are in the water and we are just a matter of meters from the most prolific killers in the sea. After what felt like hours, but was in truth just 0 minutes, we are back on Hanse continuing towards Half Moon Island taking in the incredible array of icebergs along the way. Intense flashes of unnatural blues burst into view as the light reflects off of these magnificent structures, each with unique features and every one as exciting as the last. Meandering through the vast icy expanse, we arrive in Menguante Cove to disembark on our first landing on Half Moon Island. This small, rocky outpost is home to an equally small Argentine base, a healthy population of chinstrap penguins and just one misguided king penguin standing proudly on the beach. The island is recognised as an Important Bird Area

IBA and it is clearly evident to see why once ashore. Not just a safe haven for approximately 2000 breeding pairs of chinstrap penguins, but also home to a number of sea birds including south polar skuas, kelp gulls and the small, beautiful, but incredibly feisty Antarctic terns. As you move closer towards the penguin colony, the inevitable smell thickens in the air and it is, at first, unpleasant. But before too long, your nose adjusts and attention shifts to the fact that you are surrounded by some of the most intriguing, comedic animals on the planet. Designed wholeheartedly to be expert swimmers, they are surprisingly agile on land, managing to climb to incredible heights up steep rocky inclines and control their decent back down again. Completely unphased by human presence, they are inquisitive and engaging, some even going as far as to take a peck at the strange rubber things on our feet - an essential pair of waterproof boots. As dusk eventually begins to set in, we return to the yacht to end what has only been the first afternoon of a six day adventure. Reflection on the day offers the first, startling indication of the scale, diversity and unpredictability of this place. There is no doubt in anyones mind that this metaphorical iceberg is 99 percent underwater and we haven’t even seen the 1 percent above it yet. A brief discussion with Richard and the Captain - Jens K then with 8 years experience at the helm of Hanse Explorer and a thirst for exploration - reveals the overnight plans...heading to Antarctic Sound in search of some big’ ice in case we weren’t impressed already . The small passage connecting the Bransfield Strait and the Weddell Sea should prove more than up to the challenge.

EYOS EXPEDITIONS: ANTARCTICA

Awakening on the first morning in Antarctica there are plenty of thoughts running through your head. What are we going to see today ’; What an amazing afternoon we had yesterday.’; and How can there be anything more amazing than getting that close to killer whales ’ all pass through at record pace as I have already glanced out of the window to see the most gigantic piece of floating ice pictured above, partly you could ever imagine - and this was still not the biggest around, by a long way. Our first taste of tabular icebergs and it was impressive to say the least. Towering way over the yacht and stretching inconceivable distances, these ice monsters are the result of carving from enormous ice shelves. One such event in 2000 saw an area 180 miles by 22 miles separate from the Ross Ice Shelf releasing over 3 trillion tonnes of ice into

the Ross Sea. These were understandably minute in comparison, but offered up a terrifying realisation of just how small we are. Observing the ship from our zodiac as it was dwarfed by these stunning and disturbingly peaceful giants, we are once again on the receiving end of some good fortune. From the outset, Richard had made us very aware that spotting killer whales in such a large expanse is, although regular, certainly not guaranteed. So when a second pod on only our second day surfaced in front of us, we all began wondering if he was simply trying to boost moral. Nevertheless, we took advantage of the situation and followed - at a reserved distance as to not disturb the majestic beasts - for as long as possible before they disappeared below the crystal clear waters. Little did we know at this point that it would be our last encounter of the trip. Not to be disheartened, the journey continued to our second landing and penguin colony, this time a mix of gentoo and ad lie penguins in the IBA of Brown Bluff on the northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This bared more significance than the last landing as this was our first chance to genuinely walk on Antarctica and stake an official claim on visiting the seventh continent. Before reaching the shore however, there was plenty to see in the water. This is a substantial site with around 20,000 pairs of ad lie and 550 gentoo, and with chicks still reliant on their parents for food, the waters surrounding the colony are brimming with life. Leopard seals patrol the shoreline hoping for an easy meal as older chicks begin to leave the nest and large groups of penguins can be seen flying through the water on their way out to sea or returning from a successful hunt. It is very easy to spend hours amongst the penguins despite the smell and we made the most of the visit which brought our second day to a successful close. We continued southeast just breaking into the Weddell Sea before turning back

through Antarctic Sound for an overnight journey 150 miles south along the peninsula to reach Mikkelsen Harbour and the breathtakingly stunning Spert Island. Home to large remnants of the whaling era, Mikkelsen Harbour is now visited by swathes of fur and weddell seals along with playing host to a substantial gentoo penguin colony. After a short visit, we continue to Spert Island which presents yet another facet of Antarctic geography. Tall rocky faces pierce through the dark blue waters creating a maze filled with hazardous obstacles...icebergs. Some remain stills as a result of either grounding on the rocks beneath or getting stuck between two of these monstrous structures. Others move and sway in the turbulent waters, unpredictable and deadly if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Luckily we had experts on hand to guide the zodiacs safely through this wonderful labyrinth whilst desperately attempting to take everything in.

Following the exciting morning excursion, we hop back aboard Hanse to continue our journey south entering the Gerlache Strait which separates the Palmer Archipelago - featuring Anvers Island with its 9,055 ft peak, Mount Fran ais - and the Antarctic Peninsula. The scenery in every direction is incredible and the gradually setting sun only enhances the experience, but there is something even more spectacular in these waters. Scores of humpback whales emerge from the dark blue abyss. The yacht finds itself in the midst of a krill feasting frenzy, so what better idea than to leave the safety of the ice-grade vessel in exchange for a humbling ride in a now very small zodiac. There is no need to attempt to get close to these animals, they are not in the slightest phased by our presence and in fact begin to move closer and closer towards us as they feed on an evidently abundant supply of krill under the surface. and unlike anything I have ever experienced, there are not enough words in the English language that could possibly justify it. Resting in the middle of such a large body of relatively calm water, watching countless humpbacks diving and feeding with such an amazing backdrop and nothing but the occasional blow of air and deep rumble to disturb the silence is nothing short of magical. Hours pass by as we continue to enjoy the company until eventually, the light dims and we reluctantly return to the ship to process the events of the day. Everyone will be sleeping well tonight. Understanding that this was the third of six nights on board, meant that we would soon be forced to consider turning back, but thanks to the expertise and determination of Jens and Richard, that wasn’t going to be the case. A pre-bed recommendation of getting up at the earliest opportunity indicated that we were in for another treat in the morning. Overnight the crew sail Hanse down to Lemaire Channel and at first light we are on the approach in the most tranquil waters you could imagine. This steep cliff sided passage is 7 miles long but just 1 mile wide, and full of icebergs. A challenge for any ship to pass, but one that

Now in crabeater seal territory, it begins to become clear that they are the most populous of all seal species with groups on every other piece of floating ice big enough to support them. Then, the faintest puff of water breaks the surface followed by a distinctive, slender dorsal fin which could only belong to a minke whale. Despite the relatively small scale of the channel in relation to the region, it is packed full of wildlife traveling up and down the peninsula.

Once through to the other side, the whole ship takes a minute to appreciate and marvel over the sheer beauty that this part of the world possesses. Thankfully there is no rush to move as breakfast is served, instead we can all enjoy the view through the windows as we indulge in an equally impressive selection of pastries, hot and cold breakfasts and fresh fruit. We take a short trip from Lemaire Channel to a secluded and indescribably remote Ukrainian base. Originally established by the British Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey as Base F in 19 7, the main hut named “Wordie House” after Sir James Wordie, a member of Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition who visited during its construction has been restored and is now an Historic Site. The base moved to the present site in 195 and was renamed Faraday Station in 77 in honour of British scientist Michael Faraday. Ukraine bought the base for a symbolic one pound and took over the operation 199 . Today, Vernadsky Research Base is still manned by a team of Ukrainian scientists who spend twelve months at a time conducting meteorology, upper atmospheric physics, geomagnetism, ozone, seismology, glaciology, ecology, biology and physiology research. The team are incredibly welcoming and more than happy to show us around their home, from the research facilities to the infamous ‘Faraday Bar’ which was crafted during the British occupation. Now offering a minimal menu of simply vodka, it is clearly a welcome change of pace for the Ukrainian team as we join in international celebration of this amazing location. Once the vodka is finished, the postcards sent - yes you can send a letter to a loved one, even from Antarctica - and the tour completed, we jump back in our zodiacs and head across the water to Wordie House. Offering a small insight into the living conditions of explorers of old along with original produce, equipment and facilities, this site is not only protected, but reserved for the few fortunate enough to reach it. An eye-opening reminder of the lengths that the first pioneers went to in search of answers in an unknown world and a stark contrast to the luxurious expedition currently being undertaken.

Keen to maximise the distance we are able to travel south before having to head back up the Antarctic Peninsula, we are hurried back to the ship to continue our quest...to reach the Antarctic Circle. Located at a latitude of 33 . S, the captain did his best to reach the unreachable given the available time and we had to settle for 5 7.7 S, still a considerable distance from the elusive line. On a longer expedition or at least having the full week to utilise, there is every chance Hanse would have reached the circle and provided an experience even fewer get to enjoy. There was however a silver lining. Admitting defeat, the captain decided to show off this impressive ships capabilities. Smashing through large pieces of sea ice, it was clear to see that Jens and his crew enjoy and are well versed in what this vessel can do. After a brief spell of sharp handling and precision ice breaking, we are told to head to the wet room and prepare to disembark on the zodiacs once more. Without any indication as to the purpose, everyone is ready in a matter of seconds - so experienced at getting in and out of the zodiacs after just four days of ‘training’ - and we are on our way. A very short, slow trip and we arrive at our destination - a substantial piece of sea ice that is floating just in front of the ship. Following an initial assessment of the ice’s suitability, we step out of the zodiacs and on to a floating piece of ice in the middle of Grandidier Channel. Proving to be the ultimate consolation prize, it would also signify the furthest south we would manage to reach. Once everyone had successfully photographed every possible angle of the ice and Hanse in the background it was back to the zodiacs. In a matter of seconds of us getting off of the ice, we get to enjoy Hanses power and her captain’s incredible control up close, as she crashes through the same sheet we were standing on just moments before. As we begin our ascent back up the peninsula, heading north through Lemaire Channel, we get to enjoy a spectacular sunset, a fitting end to yet another exhilarating day. At this point, it seems as though there will be nothing left to see as we will simply be passing back through old ground, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In many ways, the best was yet to come.

The following morning we wake in one of the most suitably named places we have come across, Paradise Harbour. Blissfully tranquil, it is the ideal spot for a morning kayak. Drifting around this magnificent bay, there are huge grounded icebergs that appear to move as the wind blows the inflatable kayak along and vast ice cliffs surrounding the crystal clear water. With no wildlife close enough to hear and a distinct absence of any man made noise, it is peaceful beyond imagination and quite literally silent. The perfect place for reflection both visually and figuratively as the mirror-like waters reflect every detail of the icy sculptures above. Unfortunately, silence never lasts and we find ourselves at a small penguin colony nesting atop a tiny island in the bay, although one could argue that the sound of penguins in their natural habitat isn’t so much of a disturbance as a delight to hear. Regardless, the zodiacs return and we head off in search of some glacial carving. The ideal spot in a secluded cove surrounded by overhanging icy towers provided yet more opportunity for some peaceful reflection but unfortunately denied us the opportunity to experience any serious carving in the short time we were able to wait. Thankfully it wasn’t too long before we reached our second stop of the day which would open our eyes to an incomprehensibly astounding landscape. Neko Harbour is home to a large colony of gentoo penguins who nest high up on a rocky outcrop and it is clear to see why. The views are simply astonishing and impossible to process. Not only is the water perfectly still, but the sun is so intense that there is no need for a hat, gloves or even a coat. Every way you look from the impressive viewpoint offers something different but equally spectacular. Heading out of the bay you have views in the distance of Anvers Island and the enormous 9,000 ft

peak which looks minuscule from here and back towards the land, huge glaciers force their way down towards the sea with gigantic blocks of ice precariously positioned, ready for collapse. Across a small inlet is a rocky, snow covered mountain which gives way to a sizeable avalanche, throwing a huge cloud of ice into the air it is a harsh reminder of the areas instability. On returning to the yacht, we are informed that now was the time to don the swimwear and prepare as best you can to indulge in the ‘polar plunge’. It is fairly self explanatory, but for those wondering, it is a case of throwing oneself in the water - recorded at -0.5C at the time - from the back of the ship and attempting to get back out as quickly as possible with a warming glass of vodka and preheated onboard sauna waiting for you on the other side. Some will choose not to partake in such a crazy notion, but it’s not every day you get the opportunity to say you have ‘swum’ in the Antarctic. Thankfully, the blistering sun was still out - unsurprising given the incredibly long days - so it didn’t take much to warm up afterwards. It was then time to say goodbye to this oasis of the south and head further north overnight to Charcot Bay. There was an added treat on the way as we passed back through the Gerlache Strait to find a significant number of humpback whales still enjoying the abundance of krill in the area. In the morning of our last day, we arrive at Charcot Bay to find yet more incredible scenery with wide spanning glacial ice cliffs hanging from spectacular rock formations and water as still as we had seen yesterday. Simply breathtaking and as exciting as the first day. More close encounters with humpbacks in our zodiac ensued before returning to the yacht for lunch and our last journey to our last landing of the trip.

TRAVEL is hard to find a patch of water not currently featuring a seal or penguin. We meander around the small rocky islands in search of a more suitable landing sight but can only find a small protruding rock that is currently uninhabited by seals. A brief step ashore secures the last landing of the trip and it is time to return to the yacht for the final time. Throughout the trip you are welcomed back aboard with a warm cup of cocoa - spiked with a little rum if requested - and waited on hand and foot by an incredible steward team. Every meal is beautifully presented and delicious thanks to the incredible chef who is able to manage the kitchen whilst accommodating for last minute changes in schedule when a killer whale decides to show up. And everything on the yacht runs seamlessly thanks to the experience, respect and understanding that Jens possesses. Aster’s Perfect Finnish

Designed by Russell Sage Studios, and just across from the underground station, the 10,000 square foot space is set across two floors, with a caf and deli on the ground floor and an upstairs, upscale restaurant and bar. The interiors are fun and fitting for the location. The café and deli is adorned in neutral colours with the use of luggage-inspired detailing on the café’s bar front and a large railway clock. Upstairs, a spectacular staircase guides the way to the 122 cover restaurant and cocktail bar above. Warm and inviting with a relaxed fine dining atmosphere, shades of rich purple and gold and varying fabric and leather textures are balanced with a continuation of the brass and marble detailing from downstairs. The restaurant also includes a 1 cover private dining room, and glass-walled wine room seating up to eight guests. The kitchen is overseen by Executive Chef, Helena Puolakka, serving the Nordic cuisine of her Finnish heritage complemented by classic French dishes and techniques that she has carefully honed over her career. Aster is the second time Helena has worked for D&D as she originally joined the group as executive chef to launch Skylon, where she stayed for six years until 2013. Born on the south-west coast of Finland, Helena’s upbringing has shaped her style of cooking, which focuses on uncomplicated, homemade food and distinctive flavours. Her French culinary training adds a unique and different dimension to dishes, bringing Scandinavia to Southern France leading to exciting menus full of fusion.

Aster also offers a seasonally changing afternoon tea menu with open rye sandwiches topped with the likes of Atlantic prawn skagen or cured salmon and pickles; and a special experiential dinner held monthly titled, Series of Senses’ exploring the five senses: touch, sound, sight, taste and aroma. As we look towards spring, the one thing guaranteed is that March is all about the Irish. What excites me about March is the clover based bunting, tall tales of long lost Irish heritage and St Patrick’s Day festivities. Now we’re focusing on Ireland, let’s talk about whiskey. Up until the 19th Century Irish whiskey was second to none. With over thirty distilleries Irish whiskey was a world leader. This all changed in the 1920’s due to the US prohibition, mixed with a rise of international trade tariffs. These factors led to sixty years of decline for the Irish whiskey industry, which saw many of their distilleries disappear. Currently, we’re experiencing the resurgence of the Irish whiskey industry, a boom which exploded in the eighties. The takeover of the Irish distilleries by Pernod Ricard has seen unrivalled growth over the past thirty years. St Patrick’s Day, dedicated to wellmeaning monk with humble origins has transformed into a world-wide celebration of Irish culture. There are various cocktails which represent examples of Irish refinement and which are perfect for a St. Paddy’s Day tipple. An Irish classic is a ‘Hot Toddy’. Simple, but elegant all you need is whiskey, a slice of lemon, half a cinnamon stick and boiling water. Add some smooth Kilbeggan Irish whiskey with its delicate undertones to compliment the honey.

Another beautiful modern classic is the appropriately named ‘Weeski’. This is another cocktail which is refreshingly simple. Combine whiskey, a light-coloured aperitif, orange liqueur and orange bitters. Shake, strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a lemon peel.

YOUR DRIVE Audi’s new R8 Spyder V10 is the epitome of sports car design. Distinct with its long back, housing the impressive 5.2-litre V10 and forward positioning of the passenger cabin as a result, this is a truly stunning car. Emphasised linear features throughout the exterior design provide a clean, cutting reminder of this cars precision and power. The front is defined and structured whilst offering an inviting flow from the large grille out to the air intakes and headlights which are seamlessly amalgamated in their design. It has also received some structural alterations in the update; with a widening of almost 4cm, it now sits at a staggering 1.94 metres wide. This not only adds to the aggressive sporty

aesthetic, but adds functional benefits to how it drives. Further improving the cars athleticism, the new R8 Spyder utilises the impressive ‘Audi Space Frame’ which uses a multimaterial construction to reduce weight whilst increasing rigidity and thus improving safety and handling performance. The result of this is a weight of 1,720 kg and almost 50 percent higher torsional rigidity - a necessity for any car you are taking the roof off of. All of the above has been essentially in maximising the potential of this 5.2-litre V10 monster. In order to deliver sufficient performance through corners with such a large block in the rear, the aerodynamic team clearly worked tirelessly with the design studio in order to encorporate every last vent, spoiler and diffuser necessary for precision handling and the result is spectacular. YOUR DRIVE Inside the car you are welcomed by a clean and easy to navigate interior. There’s no room for large centre console screens here, everything is displayed motorsport style in front of the driver so you never have to take your line of sight away from the road. All of the expected is present, with a choice of driving modes for when you really want to test that turning capability or realise that the rain has made the road surface a little slicker than usual and everything is perfectly displayed on the stylish digital dash. Adaptive systems for both the suspension and the transmission mean that you can shift from relative comfort - considering the nature of the car - to full race setup in a matter of seconds. That being said, anything more than a twobag trip to the shop will require either an absent or understanding passenger who is capable of securing additional cargo under brisk acceleration in potentially high winds. This lack of storage merely highlights how little space has been wasted on the car, mostly taken up by the enourmous engine, but also designed in such a way that every inch is utilised for a purpose and of course you need to be able to enjoy the interior space as well. The soft-top, which maintains Audi’s beliefs on the ‘convertible’ has also been cleverly designed as to not impact on the cars overall design. Folding majestically away behind the cabin, the cloth roof allows the R8 Spyder to look just as good with it up as it does down, but we all know which way you are going to prefer it when you get behind the wheel. There is no denying the allure of this car, from its aesthetic appeal to the facts and figures on paper, but the second you set eyes on it and hear the engine roar into action with an audible punch in the face, there will be no turning back.

Classic Heavyweight 1964 Aston Martin DB5

Few cars evoke such high levels of appreciation as the Aston Martin DB5. Not only the most recognisable of super spy, 007’s cars, but a truly magnificent piece of automotive design. This was a more than worthy replacement for the DB4 which brought an all aluminium 4.0l engine and new ZF 5-speed transmission amongst others. There is no denying the beauty of this car, and its history on the big screen speaks for itself. Featuring in numerous Bond films and a vast range outside of the franchise, it is a car that is known the world over. This 19 example is finished in stunning California Sage coachwork with the original fawn leather interior which shows patina. It is in generally good condition throughout and could be used as it is. Alternatively, it would be a very sound basis for mild restoration. Maybe leave out the missile launchers and ejector seats though, it might ruin the purist appeal. The UK property market, particularly London, is still a highly desired area for overseas investors and this doesn’t appear to be slowing anytime soon. The influence of the overseas investor coupled with a weak pound is allowing for a very healthy sales market in the City’s Capital. Sales of homes in London’s most exclusive areas to Chinese buyers have risen since the UK voted to leave the EU. With the British currency at a 30 year low and the Chinese housing market at a 25 year high its inevitable Asian investors will look here to invest. Include the fact buyers are influenced by our history and our institutions such as our monarchy, police force and courts this is helping the surge of Chinese money into our market. The aftermath of Brexit left economic uncertainty in the UK but Chinese buyers see the British currency and property market as having long term stability. The recent transactions account for the most activity recorded from international buyers and one particular market in recent years. In September 2016 a record number of enquiries from Chinese buyers were recorded and demand from buyers from mainland China is now being equaled with demand from buyers from Hong Kong. New builds always prove popular with overseas investors and at Metro Village we are instructed on a number of new build developments in different areas which will satisfy the overseas investor’s needs. Something for Everyone on London’s Waterfront with Fran Moynihan, Head of Savills Waterfront Savills analysis of the 27 mile stretch of river between Teddington Lock in West London and the Royal Docks in the East shows an average premium of 13.5 for resale waterfront flats within 100m of the river compared to those sold in the surrounding area. So why are buyers prepared to buy a significant premium to live along the Thames London’s waterfront offers something for everyone. From traditional family homes on the dreamy banks of Richmond, Chiswick, Barnes and Putney, to the stylish lock up and leave developments of Wandsworth, Battersea, Fulham and Chelsea; and the fabulous warehouse conversions of historic Docklands and Canary Wharf, the city’s riverside has an energy and lifestyle of its own. How best to increase the value of your home When it comes to selling your home, the goal is to achieve more than the initial price you paid when you bought it. A significant amount of your home’s resale value will be affected by the appreciation of house prices in E14, where average sales values have risen by 57.0% over the last 10 years. However, if you want to achieve the maximum sale price for your property, there are several home improvements you can make that will add to the overall value. Creating an extra bedroom, especially with a loft conversion, offers the best return for your money. Although initial costs are not inconsiderable, a double bedroom could add 11 per cent to the value of your home, a gain of £52,700 on average E14 properties. Budget carefully according to your house size and current market value, and you could be onto a winner. Space commands a premium, so you should create more of it in your property if the opportunity arises. Extra space can transform the whole look and feel of your home, adding value and making it more desirable to house hunters. By adding extra square footage, you can increase your property’s overall value by as much as nine per cent. That would be an extra £43,100 if we go by the average property price in E14 which is £479,300.

Kerb appeal is often overlooked by sellers when they put their house on the market, yet it is one of the most important aspects to not only adding value to your home but making it look appealing to the first-time viewer.
