Frieze Sculpture 4 July – 7 October Frieze Sculpture returns to Regent’s Park this year from 4th July - 7th October for three months and will showcase work by 25 leading international artists from across five continents. A key moment in London’s cultural calendar, last year’s edition had over 5 million visitors. This year, for the first time, Mtec, logistics partner for Frieze Sculpture, will cover the cost of installation for two emerging galleries, enabling them to participate in the display; and Frieze will also launch a new audio tour and family guide app in collaboration with mobile platform ARTimbarc. Offering free public admission throughout the summer months, Frieze Sculpture will open in the English Gardens of The Regent’s Park and the roster of artists this year includes some incredibly well-established names including Tracey Emin, Elmgreen & Dragset, John Baldessari,
Kiki Smith, Bharti Kher, Barry Flanagan and Conrad Shawcross amongst others. Selected and placed by Clare Lilley (Director of Programme, Yorkshire Sculpture Park) many of the works are playful, colourful and interactive and some will be seen for the very first time. Clare Lilley said: ‘Last year, our first-ever summer Frieze Sculpture was a resounding success, with more than five million visitors enjoying exceptional sculpture by artists from around the world. The 2018 edition is just as expansive and diverse, so that the public and collectors alike can experience world-class artwork in the beautiful English Gardens, designed by Markham Nesfield in 1866. My hope is that the exhibition will give pause for thought as well as great pleasure, and that visitors to Regent’s Park will have a snapshot of the fantastic imagination of artists and variety of sculpture being made today.’

Edition Zagato With the Leica M10 ‘Edition Zagato’, Leica presents a timelessly beautiful special edition that unites the best of German craftsmanship and Italian design. Comprising a camera and a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens, the set takes its name from Dr Andrea Zagato, owner of the design house and automotive styling specialists who personally designed the limited edition, restricted to 250 pieces worldwide. This collaboration is now the second special edition created between the two long-established companies - 2015 saw the launch of a limited series of binoculars with a strikingly elegant design, the Leica Ultravid 8x32 ‘Edition Zagato’. Founded a century ago, Zagato has been the creator of the most beautiful coachbuilt bodies in the history of automobile construction. The quintessential Italian brand is particularly well known for its innovative use of aluminium in automobile design and construction. Today, the company continues to create special, and traditionally strictly limited, editions of cars with unique styling in Milan, where the story of success began with the brand’s founder Ugo Zagato in 1919. The ‘Edition Zagato’ is the first special edition of the Leica M10 camera and offers extraordinary visual and tactile highlights. The top deck, the baseplate, the outer casing and the control elements of the camera are all manufactured from aluminium. This makes it 70g lighter than its serial production counterpart. Instead of the usual leather trim, the bodyshell of the camera is finished with fine grooves, which, together with details like the red shutter release button, lend the camera its unique look and feel. The integrated handgrip at the left of the body visually distinguishes the special
edition from the serial production model of the M10 and makes it a delight to hold and handle. The M10 ‘Edition Zagato’ is the first Leica camera to have its own special serial number engraved on an aluminium badge on the base of the camera that is revealed only when the baseplate is opened. In addition to the camera and lens, the set also includes a carrying strap in red fullgrain leather embossed with the Zagato logotype. This M-Camera is the first to feature rectangular strap lugs in the same design as those of the Zagato binoculars. The certificate of authenticity graces the packaging of the set in the form of an aluminium plate with an engraved serial number. Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III On World Oceans Day, Blancpain and its President & CEO, Marc A. Hayek, unveilled their third series of Blancpain Ocean Commitment (BOC) limited edition diving watches. By purchasing one of these 250 timepieces, each client contributes to Blancpain’s participation in the cause of ocean protection. The brand commits to donate 1,000 euro for the sale of each watch, implying a total of 250,000 euro added to Blancpain’s much larger support. Since the launch of the Fifty Fathoms - the first modern diving watch - in 1953, Blancpain has maintained an unfailing commitment to exploring, preserving and achieving a better understanding of the world’s oceans. During the past 65 years, this dedication has been intensified and diversified through multiple partnerships. Four years ago, in addition to Blancpain’s annual support to expeditions and major oceanographic projects, the brand introduced a first series of limited edition BOC timepieces. The Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III features the main characteristics of the 1953 model, which has defined the finest diving watches for the entire watchmaking industry ever since. Loyal to the DNA of the original watch, the BOC timepiece houses a reliable and robust self-winding movement, caliber 1151, which achieves a four-day power reserve. The balance is fitted with a silicon hairspring, a material insensitive to magnetic fields. The movement is protected without need of an inner soft iron case, which was the solution used in the past. Equipped with a transparent sapphire case-back affording clear views of the movement’s fine Côtes de Genève decoration, as well as of the gold winding rotor specially engraved with the inscription “Ocean Commitment”. The timepiece is water resistant to 30 bar, equivalent to approximately 300 meters, and has a unidirectional rotating bezel, a must-have for a diving watch. Blue in colour as a reference to the oceans, the bezel is topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire ring, an innovative feature introduced by Blancpain in 2003. on the dial of this limited-edition timepiece bearing the BOC logo at 6 o’clock. The new Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III is offered in a 40 mm-diameter satin-brushed steel case, an exclusive diameter reserved for limited-edition Fifty Fathoms watches. The appeal of vintage watches is at an all time high. The idea that a watch has enjoyed a history before its new owner is part of the allure and in some cases that history is borderline mythology. Earlier this year, Paul Newman’s very own Newman Rolex Daytona designated as such due to a specific dial configuration sold for an incredible $17.75 million dollars. The argument of whether it was genuinely horologically important or memorabilia becomes redundant once the demand is there. However this value is created by a community of purveyors as opposed to prices being set by a brand. These historic watches are important for a variety of reasons; in some cases they are significant for being fashion icons such as the Reverso or Tank de Cartier. Others such as the Rolex Explorer or Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms are woven into the stories of human endeavour and military ability before the digital age. The waters were murkier then and the skill of the wearer was
perhaps more important in getting the most out of the watches. Nostalgia is a powerful weapon and there is much romance built into the rose tinted appeal of a simpler time, but now as the market opens up and prices respectively increase; where can you find value? Part of the charm of vintage timepieces, especially mechanical ones, is that the engineering behind them was done before complicated computer systems. Before the tolerances that the new technology provides, these mini mechanical marvels were devised by hand and mental ingenuity hence the number of the world firsts. However, with this reliance on simply skill, even the parts that became machined later in the 20th century are not as reliably put together as modern watches. The vintage market is a vital one and as with art, it is the Old Masters who laid the foundation for the modern industry. This industry, like horology, is a very lucrative one and the premiums now being applied to historically significant or rare watches are greater than ever before. To dip a foot into the world of watches from a passion perspective requires a necessity to pay respect to the industry’s history. However, the buyer may not either have the funds to purchase noteworthy timepieces or also the stomach to accept that the maintenance of these older models will require more and often costly attention. This is where Omega come into their own as a marque with feet firmly placed both in history and modernity. The Speedmaster model specifically is our suggestion to the budding collector. There are other Brands that can offer a compelling argument as to why their history is significant and there is no denying these facts. However, in the small number of brands who have not just been established but rather prospered over the last Century, very few if none can deliver as valuable a modern watch as the

WATCHES Speedmaster. The Rolex Submariner, Patek Phiippe’s Nautilus, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak are all virtually impossible to find at their collectible level and even more so once you enter the realms of the decades when the models were first conceived. An argument can be made for both Panerai and Blancpain also providing a solid foundation from their archives but the modern Fifty Fathoms is an example of a retail price well above what could be considered a value based first purchase. This returns us back to the trusty Speedmaster. First conceived with now an industry standard tachymetre bezel, the model was introduced in the 1957 Olympic Games as a genuine aid to help time the games. The story from there on has been told many times over. NASA requested timepieces from various Manufacturers including Rolex, Longines and Breitling with only the Speedmaster passing all of their vigorous tests to act as a tool in outer space. The current Moonwatch continues to house the same movement as the models that went to space, albeit enjoying some minor modern updates. No other watch can lay claim to being not just the first watch on the Moon but also the first watch in space when famous astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra wore his personal Speedmaster on the space walk during the MercuryAtlas 8 mission. Some vintage Speedmasters, and current Limited Editions do carry hefty premiums due to their rarity and demand, but the importance we place on this model being a gateway watch is simply that the Moonwatch in its original form is readily available from all Omega retailers at a fair price. The historically significant cues are all in place such as hesalite plexi glass as per the original and a manually wound movement given the lack of atmosphere and gravity in space, as well as mimicking the original 42mm case proportions. An updated more robust version sits alongside the classic carrying a sapphire glass and sapphire glass caseback, affectionally known as the Sapphire Sandwich. A non limited but numbered edition is also available titled the First Watch in Space.
A homage piece to the CK2998 as worn by Schirra, this model is smaller at just under 39mm but also hand wound and perhaps a truer reflection of the vintage and highly collectible Speedmasters. The modern CK2998 limited editions are hard to find, as is the recent Snoopy edition. The beloved cartoon character’s collaboration comes from the vital role the Speedmaster played in the Apollo 13 mission but our emphasis remains that the basic models in this collection are easily available and the perfect balance between respecting the history behind modern watches and also encouraging the opportunity to buy in at a reasonable price on a reliable modern timepiece. Naturally as with any other brand, the Speedmaster collection has evolved in terms of technological experimentation and manipulation of space age materials. As pictured, an entirely blue ceramic cased Speedmaster is available with functional moon phase aperture. The Moon disc is in fact laser inscribed to reflect the actual topography of the moon! 2017 saw the update of the Speedmaster Racing collection, again pictured, now housing a Master Chronometer Certified movement that not only uses a British born Co-Axial escapement but also incorporates a METAS certificate for the first time, where the time keeping of the entire watch is guaranteed to have been checked by the Federal Institute of Meteorology. The move forward for the Speedmaster collection has been direct and visible but all of this is built on its historic significance. The entry level Speedmaster collection is more important now than ever before as a perfect conduit to begin one’s own journey into the world of collecting watches or even as a gift that will enjoy its own journey through the years. East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high
profile private clients including Giles Deacon, Swarovski, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Channel 4, and Mulberry.
Whether you're in to sports or not, its hard not to get involved with the World Cup and it seems that plenty of us are, with an average of 5,000,000 pints being poured in England for every match played. We've been quaffing so much of the amber nectar that Britain is currently enduring a CO2 shortage, meaning that everyone from small pubs to huge chains are running low on the bubbles. Of course, a bar running dry during the summer is a danger in itself, but your favourite bar not being able to dispense during the big game, it blows the mind. Luckily, there are always a couple of tricks and tips to maintain your drinking average and still have a great time. First of all, go for a bottled beer or cider! It's already been charged with gas so you need not worry about the CO2 running low. There are often all your favourites served in bottles as well as some lovely new offerings. Secondly, if you must stick with draft beer, but its coming out a little flat, ask for a shandy or a top of lemonade. In the summer heat, a little zing of lemonade helps the beers to be a lot more refreshing, and the effervescence from the sparkling lemonade will carry through your pint until the last drop. Just be sure to ask your bartender or waiter that it comes from a bottle and not a soda gun. If you're not into lemonade, a little splash of ginger ale
works wonders as well. Thirdly, you could always move away from beer, go for a nice refreshing gin and tonic. Lots of bars have lots of gins these days, I would recommend something light and fruity, such as Hoxton Pink, with pink hibiscus, rosehip, gunpowder tea and grapefruit its perfect with mediterranean tonic and is beautiful to enjoy in this hot weather. You could always invite your friends over to watch the match as well, instead of wrestling through the bars to get a drink during half time, or worse yet risking leaving the game and missing a winning goal. You can pick your favourite tipple and have it in stock for your next match, be it some cocktails or spirits or back to basics with beers, watching the big game in your own surroundings with friends is always a great day. There are plenty of local wine and spirit shops that offer more than generic lager, some have some positively wonderful creations and you can even tailor your beer to the game, buying beer of the country of the team you're supporting - or hoping to beat! The English Grill Located in the historic Rubens at the Palace luxury hotel, the newly opened English Grill à la carte restaurant overlooks the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace and is within walking distance of Victoria station. Part of the International Red Carnation Hotel Collection (founded by Beatrice Tollman who is also their president) and a perfect place for that special occasion or for rounding off the day after doing some exploring in the Capital, the English Grill, as its name suggests, embraces the very best of English tradition, design and flavours and pays homage to the Rubens rich, royal history and its ties to traditional English society. The grand dining room with its fine paintings, beautiful chandeliers, polished silver and high, ornate ceiling is filled with elegant old-world charm and the highly attentive waiters offer traditional service at its most welcoming. Many of the recipes on the menu are from Beatrice Tollman’s own cookbook ‘A Life in Food’ and these have been either passed down in the family or discovered while travelling. In cities and towns across the country disused warehouses have found a new lease of life. Known for their rich histories, character features and creative residents, they have seen their popularity as residential hubs grow over the last few decades. In London warehouses are an important part of the fabric of the city. They are mainly found close to the banks of the Thames, with many having kept their original names - Gun Wharf, Saffron Wharf and Cinnamon Wharf are just a few examples - which helps to keep their history alive. Traditionally, these commercial buildings were situated in less desirable areas, where pirates ruled the waves and mystics lined the streets. Originally, those working in the docks lived here as well, but following the Black Death many moved out and into more conventionally residential neighbourhoods. Fast forward to the 1980s and the use of warehouses as homes really took off. This was primarily driven by a number of creative individuals, including artists, fashion designers and architects, who used disused warehouses for their work and also lived in them to avoid paying rent elsewhere. The most notable of these young creatives were Tracy Emin and Alexander McQueen, who both lived and worked in Shoreditch. When the local council realised this was happening it began to allow consent for the warehouses to be legally changed into live/work spaces, sparking a residential trend across the city and further afield. One of the main benefits of warehouse conversions is the unbeatable lateral space they provide. As the exterior walls are often the only ones supporting the building, the interior can be as open as the owner wants it to be. It’s important to remember, however, that the windows tend only to be at the front and back of the property, so moving walls can be a great way of dividing up the space without losing light.
