FROM THE EDITOR

The end is in sight for us all to say goodbye to one of the worst years in modern times and a chance for us to look back and remember that we should all be grateful for what we still have. There is no better time to understand just what you have than at Christmas. With festive cheer in the air - and often your glass - December is the perfect month to offer up your help, love and kindness to ensure that we all end 2016 on a high. London’s Royal Parks have offered up ten fantastic reasons to get outside and enjoy your local green space from picking your environmentally friendly Christmas tree to discovering the history behind those Christmas traditions. If you prefer to spend your time outdoors with a comforting drink in hand, then there are still plenty of options. From winter terraces across the Capital to the biggest Christmas event in the heart of Hyde Park with an inviting Bavarian beer lodge, there will

be something that you can get excited about before the big day arrives later in the month. Of course, one of the biggest invasions across London at this time of year is the arrival of a fantastic array of ice rinks at every turn. From Canary Wharf in the East all the way past Somerset House to the Natural History Museum in the West, there is a local rink for you to enjoy. But you might want to venture a little further than your doorstep as each has their own unique style, feel and of course, cosy lodge in which to enjoy some apres ski. The key to surviving this month is quite evidently by keeping warm. If that means you require the help of more consumable factors than a simple scarf and gloves, then so be it, just make sure you take the chance to enjoy it with friends, family and anyone else who looks like they would enjoy the company.

The Royal Parks at Christmas Now that Christmas is well and truly upon us, it’s time to get out there and make the most of the Capital’s offerings. This year the Royal Parks have plenty of festive treats to get you in the mood, from Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and winter horse drawn carriage rides, to Christmas inspired walks and festive drinks. Here’s some inspiration with the top ten activities to enjoy. Visit Hyde Park Winter Wonderland on its tenth anniversary No Christmas countdown is complete without a visit to the UK’s number one festive destination, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. New additions include the internationally renowned ‘Nutcracker on Ice’ at the Winter Palace and the UK debut of the world’s largest transportable rollercoaster, Munich Looping. Don’t worry though the usual favourites including The Magical Ice Kingdom, outdoor ice skating, Zippo Circus and the Giant Observation Wheel, are all back. We recommend booking all major attractions in advance and visiting on weekdays if you have little ones. Visit the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland website for tickets and more info.

Buy your sustainable Christmas tree from a Royal Park From 27 November you can buy your Christmas tree and decorations in Bushy Park (Diana Car Park), Greenwich Park (Bower Avenue) and Richmond Park (Roehampton Gate Car Park). Each park will also stock a selection of natural wreaths, garlands, holly and mistletoe. Trees are sustainably sourced from the Highlands in Scotland and sales support the work of The Royal Parks.

Improve your sense of direction in Hyde Park Follow the North Star they say, but which way is north? Without the aid of a compass, most of us don’t have the foggiest idea what direction we are facing. Follow in the footsteps of your ancestors and learn how to navigate the old fashioned way, by using clues from the sun, wind and plants. The two-hour workshop will also help you identify trees in winter from their buds, twigs, bark and shape. Afterwards, why not wander down to the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen and relax with a festive drink. Personally, we can’t get enough of their salted caramel cappuccino. When: December 3, 10am-noon | Cost: £10.00 | Adults only. Book via the Royal Parks Foundation website.

Visit the Frieze Sculpture Park in The Regent’s Park Combine fresh air and culture, by visiting the Frieze Sculpture Park in The Regent’s Park until January 8. Xmas Gifts For Watch Lovers Ken Kessler

Brexit, says Mrs May, means Brexit, but watches, curiously, aren’t always about watches. At this time of year, when gift-giving dominates one’s waking hours, the vexing problem of what to buy a watch fanatic, besides another watch, gnaws at the benefactor. Unless one is thinking about a gift for immediate family, a new Patek Philippe, Rolex or Cartier might seem a bit excessive. Instead, it’s more practical to feed the habit, hobby or indeed, obsession. Most obvious among the gifts that any watch lover would receive with boundless gratitude are custom-made watch straps, from companies such as Jean Rousseau in the Piccadilly Arcade. Watch straps have evolved from necessities that simply attach a timepiece to one’s wrist into a means of expression. It’s the only way anybody can personalise or customise a watch without needing the input of a watchmaker. Custom strap makers can replace the original strap (don’t throw it away or lose the buckle!) with a new one in any leather that is legally available, and in any colour. Of course, the lazy way is to use an over/under cloth strap, but these are cheap, nasty, ugly, uncomfortable and best suited to imagination-free fashion victims.

Instead, imagine the joy of the recipient who receives an ostrich, python or crocodile strap in royal blue, to match his club tie, in black with red stitching to suit a vintage chronograph, or allcrimson, to complement the soles of her Louboutins. All you need to know is the width of the strap, where it meets the watch. To find this out surreptitiously, just say to the receiver that you think you need one yourself and ask your beneficiary how to measure it. “Could you show me on your watch?” There’s your answer, and it will probably be something between 16mm and 24mm. If the recipient is a collector with a number of watches, he or she can never have too many storage or travel containers. These can be portable cases that carry one or more timepieces, to be kept safely in one’s hand luggage if travelling with more than one, or lockable boxes lined with suede or silk, with compartments for watches that rest flat, or cushions around which the strap or bracelet is wrapped. The latter start with spaces for four or six, but you can also find models that will hold 24 or more. Prices range from a couple of pounds on-line for the most utilitarian items, or one can spend many thousands on boxes that

20

COLUMN also feature mechanisms to keep self-winding (or “automatic”) watches wound when they’re not being worn. Dozens of manufacturers will supply you with suitable cases, from luggage makers to fashion houses. Among them a r e Aspinal of London, Asprey, Brioni, Rapport, Louis Vuitton, Dunhill, Loro Piana, Linley, Globe-Trotter, Hackett and Smythson. Also look to the watch brands who offer accessories, including Bremont and Omega. Less luxurious or glamorous are watch tools, but collectors do love their watch-related “boys’ toys”. If I were to write a list for Santa, at the top of mine would be the magnifier from Loupe

System (www.loupesystem.com), probably the most high-tech loupe money can buy and a must-have for watch lovers who scour flea markets and watch fairs. A nice stocking filler would be a set of jeweller’s screwdrivers, which, though prosaic to a non-horophile, will make the enthusiast’s eyes light up: look to brands like Bergeon or Horotec for credibility’s sake. These and other serious watchmaker’s tools are available from www.cousinsuk.com. Another surefire hit for the watch fanatic is a lavish book on the subject. If your friend or relative collects Rolexes or Patek Philippes, look at their bookshelves. An absence of titles from Mondani (www. mondanibooks.com) will provide you with ample choices from their catalogue, while a fine purchase of a more general nature, with absolute readability for any enthusiast, would be Michael Clerizo’s Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking or Wristwatches by Gisbert L. Brunner. Any bookshop can find these for you should amazon. co.uk not appeal. More fun are the bracelets from Speedometer Official. This Italian company has crafted unisex bangles, cufflinks and belt buckles that look like the bezels on sport Rolexes - and you don’t have to be a Rolex enthusiast to enjoy them. Order them from www.speedometerofficial.it.

Still not convinced that you can get away with something other than a watch? Depending on your budget, a few of this year’s super-cool wristwatches, in roughly ascending order, include the Swatch Sistem51, any of the Hamilton Khaki Field watches, SevenFriday’s Q Series, the Longines Heritage Military Watch, Oris’ Diver Sixty-Five, the Junghans Meister Pilot and just about anything from Tudor. That spans around £120 to just under £4000. If you insist on spending more, then mine will be a De Bethune DB28, please….

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

It all began in 1860 with Guido Panerai. He opened the first shop for watchmakers in Florence that also doubled as a school for burgeoning watchmakers. Over one hundred and fifty years later, the brand continues to fascinate, divide yet captivate the imagination of watch enthusiasts worldwide. Offering an instantly recognisable case design mirrored with an extremely focused brand DNA, Panerai is perhaps one of the few brands that has survived and prospered despite its very focused creations. Panerai has chosen not to attempt to market themselves to the entire market, rather creating one of the most loyal followings in modern horology, often known affectionally as Paneristi.

The real beginning of the brand began in 1916 when Radiomir was developed, a Radium based powder that presented incredible luminous properties that proved useful for the Italian Navy, to whom Panerai had already been supplying precision instruments. It was not until twenty years later in 1936 were the first ever Panerai timepieces created for the Navy’s frogmen - the elite branch of underwater tactical soldiers. Records show that not only were only ten pieces made, they were remarkably similar to their modern counterparts in their 47mm case diameter, a size very atypical of that era. A few years later, the watches were created in a more regular production but most notably two discs were layered upon one another in a “sandwich” fashion that would allow the Radium to be even more visible. This sandwich style dial is an element Panerai especially has become renown for but more interestingly, it was the Radiomir family that was created first with the wiry lugs seen in contemporary models. It was later in 1940 that the first solid lugs were added to create a more solid timepiece for sturdiness in the field. Though the brand’s case design has become intentionally very distinctive, a collection that has been revisited in recent years is their Mare Nostrum, which was a more simple design with a round case and chronograph complication but more importantly, the beginning of a focus on the security of the crown. This intention sees another first for the company as the now iconic bridged crown guard is patented in 1956, around the same time Radiomir is superseded by a newer luminous element; namely, Luminor, giving birth to Panerai’s second family. This next generation of timepieces uses the stronger case structure requested by the Italian Navy but now also this new crown guard system thus laying the blueprint for the iconic design we are familiar with today. The Seventies saw the brand leave the family for the

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

COLUMN first time and officially rebranded as Officine Panerai. At this point, their main business still focused on supplying the army with precision instruments including compasses and depth gauges besides the timepieces. It was not until 1993 that the brand was unveiled to the general public on board the cruise liner, Durand de la Penne. The incredible popularity of this launch saw the brand build such popularity in a short time that the Richemont Group (then Vendôme Luxury Group) purchased Panerai in 1997 adding to their already strong stable of high end marques, and also immediately creating a selected distribution within Italy. The extra power afforded by being part of this group saw a worldwide distribution implemented soon after to match demand and to much evident success. Notably, pre-Vendôme Panerai models carry much weight amongst collectors as during this period it was still a superbly niche brand available in extremely limited quantities. However, what is quite sensational here is that ultimately Panerai was not an internationally known or distributed brand until as late as almost 2000 indicates that there is something quite special in how it has created such strong and loyal following in less than twenty five years. It was not until 2002 did the brand fully establish its own Neuchatel based Manufacture, which has since grown and been rehoused in 2012 further affirming their growth. In-house movements have been developed including a patented thirty second Tourbillon, Equation of Time complication and this year’s quite sumptuous Minute Repeater showcasing just how far the Brand has come. The current collection starts from a simple manual wound calibre at £4,000.00 in steel to full ceramic cases and in-house

chronographs. The variations of price points offer excellent value for money while a small selection of Rose gold models ensure there is some glamour alongside the functionality. The entire collection still falls within the Radiomir & Luminor families with an intentional focus on creating a very tight selection that strongly reflects the core DNA of Panerai. Divisive in some respects perhaps as their doubters would ask how much you can do without broadening the spectrum, historic collections such as the Royal Oak can safely beg to differ. I would put Panerai in this bracket where it attracts both an on trend clientele while retaining a horologically sound foundation. Given the new releases for 2016, especially the Due & Blue collections with scintillating sunburst dials, it is quite clear Panerai is just getting started. The fact Panerai is still ultimately building the foundation of its contemporary outlook and still delivered in a very limited distribution worldwide is the main reason we have wanted to work with this brand. As of this December, New Cavendish Jewellers are now Official Agents for Officine Panerai; we are proud to have been chosen to be ambassadors for this celebrated and much loved Maison. As a relatively young brand ourselves, we can safely say we are the only stand alone independent & family owned retailer in Central London to offer this portfolio of brands and jewellery under one roof. From Cartier to Breguet amongst many others, and now Panerai too…these houses do not offer their allegiances lightly and with greatly diminishing networks and a very competitive market; our history and standing within the Richemont Group from our existing partnerships has led to this fantastic collaboration. As of this December, we invite you to visit our Boutique to discover the world of Panerai.

WATCHES

Senator Cosmopolite All 37 time zones in one watch

Today it is easier than ever before to travel to even the most remote corners of the world, and for many cosmopolitan travellers it has long since become routine to move from one time zone to another - for business or pleasure. In 2015 the German watch manufactory Glashütte Original presented the Senator Cosmopolite, an exceptional mechanical timepiece designed specifically to meet the needs of today's world travellers. Its innovative time zone mechanism allows the traveller to display two different time zones at once, choosing any of the 37 time zones currently in use. Featuring the new automatic Calibre 89-02, the mechanism even makes it possible to respond both to the creation of new time zones and to the elimination of existing ones, which happened only recently. In theory up to 96 different times can be set in this way. Despite the complexity of the specially developed automatic movement, Glashütte Original have put a great deal of effort into making the handling of the timepiece as simple and intuitive as possible. Connoisseurs of fine German watchmaking will appreciate both the aesthetic dimensions of the Senator Cosmopolite and the extraordinary mechanics within. The new automatic Calibre 8902 was developed in-house by the Saxon manufactory to meet the needs of today’s w o r l d

travellers: The ability to track the time of day in two time zones at once is made possible by an intricate set of finely engineered, integrated complications. The time zone wheel displays a choice of 37 world time zones, each indicated by the official IATA location code designating a key international airport in the zone. The 24 time zones that are aligned at full-hour offsets from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) present a black IATA code in the DST or STD window at 8 o’clock; a further ten time zones aligned with GMT at half-hour offsets appear in blue, while the three remaining zones at quarter- or three-quarter hour offsets from GMT are represented by the relevant IATA location code in red; the colour coding allows one to identify the offset from GMT at a glance. As a rule, the primary point of reference for the traveller on the road is the local time at destination. Accordingly, the designers at Glashütte Original have given pride of place to the away or destination time, represented by the central hour and minute hands, small seconds dial at 6 o’clock, day/night indicator at 9 o’clock, and the watchmaker’s signature Panorama Date display at 4 o’clock. A further reference to the destination time is presented at 8 o’clock, where two small windows indicate whether Daylight Saving Time (DST) or Standard Time (STD) is in effect in the destination time zone. As one might expect from Glashütte Original, the Senator Cosmopolite is further distinguished by its undeniable elegance. The lacquered silver-grained dial features a black railroad chapter ring framing black Roman numerals, with symmetrical placement along the central vertical axis of the home time dial at 12, central hour and minute hands and the small seconds dial at 6 o’clock. Along the central horizontal axis the destination time day/night dial at 9 o’clock shows a starry night sky on the lower half and a yellow sun on the upper, complemented at 3 o’clock by the Glashütte Original logo. Roman and Arabic numerals, railroad chapter and minute rings are all laser-engraved and galvanised in black. The central poire hour and minute hands are fashioned in blued steel, as are the home time hour and minute hands, the small seconds hand, and the destination time day/night hand. The perfect travel companion from Glashütte Original is available in white gold with a 44mm case with blue Louisiana alligator leather strap and white gold fold-over clasp. SIAN DELLAR

Microblading

Opening your eyes to new possibilities

Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow treatment that is carried out using a specialised manual hand tool which holds very fine, disposable microblades and implants colour pigments onto the skin. Microblading can be used on eyebrows, eyes and lips and is the latest technique in semi-permanent make-up. The treatment requires no machines or needles and results can last up to 18 months and is even being hailed as the latest development in anti-ageing. So, whether you have overplucked your brows or they are naturally sparse, the treatment is for anyone who is a slave to their eyebrow pencil every day - freeing up your time for, quite frankly, better things to do and allowing you to finally be happy with your incredibly natural, new brows. With a treatment so obvious due to the location on your face, this isn’t something you can chance and only the best will do. With a clinic on Harley Street, Sian Dellar is an award winning Permanent Makeup Specialist, she won The London Hair and Beauty Awards 2015 and has been nominated for the London Hair and Beauty Awards 2016 making her the perfect choice for the treatment. Sian’s incredible talent not only enhances facial features but

has the power to completely transform the face, not only taking the time out of your current makeup routine but also taking years off your age, thanks to lifting and framing effect from having the perfect brow shape for your face. During your consultation in her plush Harley Street clinic, Sian will talk to you about your brows and how you currently look after them. Everyone is different, from their face shape to their daily routines, and the consultation is designed for Sian to not only measure your face precisely so that you achieve the perfect brows for your own face but also for your own lifestyle. Once measured, Sian then carefully draws on your brows filling any gaps with very fine strokes using an eyebrow pencil. This is to not only allow you to see what your new brows will look like, but also to check the shape and ensure you are happy to proceed. After that, there is nothing left but to mix up your perfect custom brow colour - the variety of shades Sian has will surprise you! - and start the treatment itself. For many this is the most daunting part, but that said be reassured by the fact that Sian is the ultimate professional, not only has she created thousands of brows, but she has also corrected many bad jobs by

other therapists - so much so that she has even undertaken a tattoo removal course due to the number of clients enquiring. Sian is not pushy in any way and won’t start work until you are completely happy with the shape, however while you may be used to drawing your brows a certain way it can be frightening to see a completely different shape in the mirror and you simply have to trust that Sian knows best and the final result will be amazing. Her numerous before and afters are complete proof of this. Using the microblading method, Sian delicately adds hypo‐ allergenic pigments to the outermost layers of the eyebrows, for the most understated, flawless and natural result every time. There is no denying that while the treatment isn’t comfortable, it is in no

way painful and copious amounts of numbing cream help take the initial sting away. If anything, the unusual sound of the blade somehow makes the treatment seem much worse than it actually feels and thanks to Sian’s deft skills it is all over in an extremely short period of time. Ever the perfectionist, Sian will also move you around a bit, getting you to sit up and turn you head to ensure that everything is just right and won’t stop until she is completely happy. Sian’s clinic is located in the heart of Harley Street within easy distance of both Bond Street and Oxford Street and Sian is now offering her treatments at the VIP Room at the Daniel Galvin hair salon on the third floor at Selfridges, London.

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO

Gifts for Fitness Lovers with Alex Castro

Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. With over ten years experience within the fitness industry, Alex trains his clients in the City alongside working at Barrys Bootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches.

For her - Anya Hindmarch does a simple but stylish “Lotions and Potions” make up bag which, as far as I can see, will be yet another bag that she has within a bag to carry more essential items that enable her to be carrying an unnecessary extra 5kg everyday.

Tis the season to be jolly (despite 2016 conspiring against all forms of joy) so I thought I would give you some gift ideas for those of you looking to buy something for your friends and family who, like me, love all things fitness. As you will be able to tell, in relation to the “for her” suggestions, I have been helpfully advised by some lovely female friends (I would be nowhere near as imaginative)!

Still Special - I’ll train with you For him - My favourite all-round gym shoe, the Adidas Ultra Boost. I love the “Uncaged” design, a grey mix with stretch knit fibres so supportive and flexible - they’ve really helped me stay injury free whilst carrying on all my high impact activities. For her - head to active in style (www.activeinstyle.com) or located on the Kings Road and pick up some L’Urv or HPE leggings. They make a change to the classic black leggings and look fashionable whilst being top quality and extremely comfortable to workout in. For either - buy a Planet Organic Hamper or Gift Box - like your traditional hamper just with some seriously tasty healthy alternatives (gluten free/raw food only etc)! For either - book a facial workout at FaceGym - it has a unique menu of workouts to tone and sculpt your face and the team are completely delightful. I’ve had one, and I’m not going to lie, I glowed for days!

True Love - I’d give you my last Quest bar For him - Alexander McQueen’s Skull Camouflage Jacquard Backpack. Total luxury - throw in your laptop, spare kit and a snack and you’re good to go! For either - 50 Barrys Bootcamp Classes. What better way to start 2017 than looking and feeling better than you’ve ever felt?! Legend status - I’ll re-rack your weights and not get mad For either - Beats by Dre Wireless headphones. I simply cannot get enough of these, with amazing sound quality, no faff on the wires, its the perfect motivational training accessory to have beats pumping direct in your ears.

Buddies - I’d buy you a pre-workout coffee For either - buy some of the best tasting coffee around from Ozone Coffee Roasters (Leonard Street EC2) and enjoy that extra caffeine buzz whenever it is needed. For either - unleash your inner child and go trampolining at Oxygen Freejumping. Its a huge amount of fun and you would be surprised that you can actually burn a fair amount of calories from bounding around Alex Castro London based personal trainer and Barry’s Bootcamp instructor. travel The Ultimate Luxury Barn You couldn’t be further from the stories of baby Jesus’ birth in a barn when you are talking about this spectacular woodland hideaway at The Lakes by yoo. Designed by Kate Moss and oozing with opulent style, this is no farmyard barn by any stretch.

The Lakes by yoo | Luxury in Orlando

THE LAKES BY YOO

The Lakes by yoo Country living doesn’t come much more luxe than this. Whether you fall in love with the surroundings and become an owner or simply have the pleasure of visiting, The Lakes by yoo delivers one of the most exclusively complete country retreats in the country. Founder John Hitchcox reveals all about this enormous project that has grown from a rather small beginning in one of the standout properties on the estate.

TRAVEL

Set on a secluded 650 acre private estate complete with 6 stunning freshwater lakes, the draw for potential owners is unrivalled. Offering a choice of plots around one of the impressive lakes or hidden away in the forest, you can create your perfect country retreat from the ground up. From the construction right through to the finest of interior details, yoo’s expertly experienced design team will work with you to create the ideal home. Then all you have to do is sit back and wait for your dreams to come true. Individuality is key, with unique features presented in each and every property on the estate. From roof-top pools to underground garages, whatever you can think up, the design team will deliver within reason! But that’s not all. If you can’t quite commit to the £2million price tag to build your own, you can just as easily rent one of a number on offer across the estate. One of the most unique properties currently available to rent for the ultimate luxury weekend stay is the Woodland Barn. A stunning 5 bedroom house complete with open-plan living, dining and kitchen space with full height windows looking out to one of the lakes, mezzanine style master bedroom with views out of the impressive glass wall and outdoor heated pool perfect for year round swimming and relaxation. The property is one of a select few that have received celebrity attention, this one owing its design to the iconic Kate Moss offering a unique insight into her ideas on style away from the camera. Utilising every space, Kate has put her mark on this impressive property with two distinct oversized sofas in the open-plan living space leading to a remarkable long dining table featuring gold cutlery and opulently styled china. The main reception space is finished with bare walls and ceiling, dark tiled wooden effect floor and full-length draping curtains to cover the floor to ceiling windows that surround the space. A wood burning fire stands proudly in the double height living area and is incredibly effective at filling the expanse with heat, even on the coldest of evenings with a stunning mezzanine master bedroom suite that also benefits from the rising warmth. In the master bedroom - one of 5 impressive sleeping quarters - you can really begin to see the influences from Moss’ design with fur adorning the mirrored, four-poster king-size bed and two furred arm chairs on which to relax. You can also enjoy an amazing collection of records on the stunning Crosley player which rests atop a further mirrored cabinet or simply soak up the views through the windows and across the lake. This is the ideal space for entertaining over the festive period or just because you want to enjoy some time with friends and family at any other time of the year and the heated outdoor pool brings that extra little something to the party. thelakesbyyoo.com

THE LAKES BY YOO

‘We started off doing this little two bedroom house with Philippe which then became the sales office and then I was chatting with Jade Jagger who’s a friend strangely because I know her dad a bit and I’d seen her house out in Ibiza. She was into jewellery design at the time and we got into this conversation about whether she should do some interiors, so we then did a house with Jade which was great. Then a few years later, a similar conversation happened with Kelly Hoppen and we built a house with Kelly Hoppen and that was great and then more recently we did this with Kate (Moss) who lives round the corner who actually I met through Jade. Kate came down and I was just showing her what we were doing and she walked past this house and goes ‘this reminds me of Johnny Cash when I visited him in the woods’ and then all of a sudden I sort of said to her, because I had been round to her house and her house is super, sort of Keith Richards, and I said why don’t you have a go at designing...‘oh I’d love to…’, next thing I know, here we are.’ The evolution of this project has been truly spectacular when you consider where it began to where it is now and beyond. ‘We’re now over 100 houses here which is the other thing, in the whole design of the project was to try and create the houses in such a way that they sort of blend in to the landscape. The original house that we had was the size of this room (the living room), but without the top (it’s impressive double height pitched ceiling). Absolutely tiny, it was an old fishing hut. So we sat there with the planners and said right we’re going to do these and we’re going to build all these lakes and slowly they got bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger, primarily because people wanted bigger. There’s one chap whose done a 10,000 sq ft property.’

A unique yet homely experience is exactly what The Lakes aims to offer and it is executed perfectly. Creating a home away from home whether as a long-term property or a short visit, the whole Lakes community is structured in such a way that you won’t want to return to your London digs. As a visitor you are drawn in to the idea of owning one of these incredible properties and having the opportunity to enjoy it on a weekly basis and as an owner you quite simply revel in the knowledge that you have such an amazing space within which you can escape and unwind from the City. Whether you are looking for a quiet break away from the bustle and noise of London with your partner or fancy a fun-filled weekend with friends, this will cater for your every need. With a concierge team on hand to accommodate your requirements - from a full fridge on arrival to mountain bikes for all of your guests - you can concentrate on taking full advantage of your chosen property and it’s surroundings. Visitors during the warmer summer months may wish to venture on to one of the lakes to indulge in a spot of fishing, kayaking or paddle-boarding to name just a few or simply enjoy the land-based activities available such as cycling, tennis, ziplining or use of the tranquil on-site spa at any time of the year. The whole idea for The Lakes was born from John Hitchcox personal family situation, torn between his wife and children in the country and his work in the city. ‘I tried moving out to the country with the young kids and this whole commuting thing just didn’t work.’ As a consequence, John subsequently separated from his wife and became a single dad. ‘Partly prompted by this sensation of pushing a pushchair and carrying a screaming child in Regent’s Park on a Sunday morning - and that I wasn’t the only dad in

thelakesbyyoo.com

40

TRAVEL this situation - I started looking around to find a place that’s out in the country where you can build a community. You would come down, stare out into the distance and get some inspiration to write your book, write your symphony, whatever your particular passion was and then you had an infrastructure behind you where the kids could play, parents could meet and everyone was a bit like-minded. So this was sort of a concoction to fix all of those problems and give a country feel and a country education to kids as well, so the idea was you come down here, kids can run around, and it would all be safe. They would learn to fish, cycle, sail, learn to do all of these things. I came down here in ’99, saw it, sat down with the planners, thought; this is going to be brilliant for my kids - they were about 4 and 5 at the time - little did I know that it was going to take 10 years before we got planning permission and another 9 years to launch it.’ The Lakes by yoo has grown from a rather humble beginning in 2006 with ideas of small shed-like buildings to an ultraluxurious oasis with some properties spanning over 7000 sq ft that is continuing to grow today. Currently boasting a herb garden, vegetable garden, chicken run - where residents can pick up fresh eggs daily - arboretum, communal BBQ area, tennis courts, football pitch, basketball court, pop-up outdoor restaurant and a beach with plans in the pipeline for an on site petting zoo, horse riding and permanent restaurant, there is plenty to keep yourself and the children entertained alongside the extensive water activities on offer. Thanks to the ideas of yoo founder, John Hitchcox to create a

community in the country where families could spend quality time together with an environmental and educational underlining, The Lakes has developed into a place he hadn’t even imagined at the start. ‘We thought, what we were going to do was put up these little sheds, huts, you know like the oak conservatories you see advertised, that was kind of where we were at in terms of our budget which were about £5,000-£6,000 to buy off the back of a magazine and you put them next to the lake and go from there. Had anyone said ‘you know, the infrastructure’s going to cost £25million’ it just would have been so way out of reach that it all kind of evolved quite nicely. We built four houses to show people what we were doing and one of my mates who came down for a kebab ended up buying the first house. You talk about giving people confidence that it’s all going to happen; ‘there’s going to be hundreds of houses here’, well for about six months he was the only house on the plot. These are stories you can tell of course after you’ve built 100 houses!’ Their latest addition to the estate which will be growing even further over the coming years is the ‘Clearwater Project’. A stunning new turquoise lake which offers fantastic new plots around the waters edge and surrounding woodland will push the boundaries of luxury living even further. Each property will be designed to the home owner’s specification by The Lakes by yoo’s acclaimed architecture team, offering the latest in state of the art design. Working closely with The Lakes by yoo team, owners can create their own desirable retreat.

41

THE LAKES BY YOO With a vast array of architectural suggestions, Clearwater homes can include cantilevered first floors, frameless glass and open plan roof terraces offering infinity pools and Jacuzzi’s immersing the owner into the estate’s stunning woodland, giving a feeling of space and endlessness. Clearwater properties can also be tailored to produce more energy than they consume through a plethora of sustainable energy offerings. Launched earlier this year, there will soon be properties available to rent in this stunning location, perfect timing for a relaxing escape after the New Year. Despite the ongoing development and over 100 properties on-site, you are never faced with any disruptive noise or indeed large numbers of people thanks to the estates design. Each and every plot delivers a truly secluded space in which to enjoy your time in peace whilst managing to deliver a truly unique community feel at the same time. With regular BBQ evenings and a growing number of activities and events, you can enjoy your time with likeminded individuals before once again retreating into your personal oasis. Even if you are only staying for the weekend, you will immediately feel at home and will most certainly consider which plot you would like for yourself.

The real wonder about this place is how vast the estate is considering the subtle entrance gates which are easily missed from the main road. It is a place to be enjoyed by those with a discerning eye for luxury and a keen interest in the incredible surroundings. Architecture like this is not often seen and you really do have the pick of the bunch when it comes to building your dream. Everything is made so easy, from the concierge team for your short break, to the expert design team who can turn your dream house into reality. Thanks to the private nature of the estate, every plot is delivered with all of the necessary permissions required to start construction as soon as possible, and thanks to the extensive knowledge that the design team at yoo possess, they could put your plans into action quicker than you might think. You may well take a visit and see a property that you really like, which is fine - everyone like things other people have got - but you can then go to the design team and tell them that this is exactly what you want which will reduce the timescale even further as they have already designed, planned and built one! ‘It’s design and build your own house but it’s done in a very easy way so that you’ve got a kind of template box and you can sit and move

everything around a bit and people have been doing some really interesting stuff and interesting finishes with it. This one (The Woodland Barn) was quite an interesting one because the idea for this plot was an acre in the woods and then a contemporary Cotswold barn feel. Most of the houses around the lakes have this sort of wooden larch finish and the idea was to contrast that with a bit of Cotswold stone. We’ve got about 20 of these sites in the woodlands and they’re all going to be a similar idea, but it will be interesting to see what people do because effectively you could pick a design like one of the lake houses or do one of these.’ There is nowhere else in the country that offers this level of quality, service and ease both from an ownership and a guest perspective and it really needs to be seen to be believed. The tranquility of the estate immediately relaxes your mind and allows you to take full advantage of everything The Lakes by yoo has to

offer and with a growing portfolio of properties, activities and a restaurant, it is only showing signs of getting better. ‘Eventually we will have a hotel behind the spa, that’s the next piece that’s happening in the next couple of years. The plan is going to be 30 or 40 rooms, so it’s been a continual evolution and it’s fun, it’s been really great fun.’ With every new generation of properties comes improved technologies in construction, efficiency and design, but don’t wait too long before you decide to build your own as there is a finite amount of space and you don’t want to miss out on this. It is the ultimate home away from home and the perfect way to spend your weekend, so next time you go in search of that weekend break or new country retreat, head to the website, or even better, just head straight down to the Cotswolds to get a real feel for this incredible place.

ORLANDO

Magic and More in Orlando With seven of the top theme parks, top golf courses, shopping and award winning dining destinations all in one sunny location, it’s no wonder that children and adults alike are all vying to get to Orlando, Florida. Over 66 million visitors flocked to the Central Florida city in 2015, making it the most visited tourist destination in the United States. Probably best-known as home to the world’s top theme parks and water parks, the area was once known for its many cattle ranches before becoming widely noted as a leader in the emerging

citrus industry. Aviation also played a strong part in Orlando’s history with the city’s Municipal Airport becoming one of the first places to train bomber pilots. The military built a second Air Force Base which today is the Orlando International Airport. With approximately 454 hotels and more than 117,000 guest rooms - including 35 AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star award recipients - Orlando offers more accommodation options than nearly any destination in the world. charming bed and breakfasts and economy hotels/motels. Private apartments and homes are also incredibly popular with those travelling in groups, or those looking for their own space. While the world-famous theme parks reign supreme as the top thing to do in the city, visitors also head to Stateside for shopping and Orlando isn’t short of retail options sating the appetite of the hungriest fashionista. Within a 20-minute radius in the heart of Orlando’s attractions area, visitors will find seven versatile shopping malls and outlet centres. In the Mall at Millennia, you will find the world’s most sought-after brands including Burberry, Chanel, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, and Rolex; as well as department stores, such as Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and Macy’s. While at Orlando’s Premium Outlets you will pick up bargains from the likes of Levi’s, Kate Spade New York, Michael Kors, and Nike making this the perfect spot to do some Christmas shopping. You can even do some serious shopping at Disney’s very own ‘downtown’ area, which has recently undergone a massive refurbishment. Doubling in size to become ‘Disney Springs’, the exciting area has added a multitude of new restaurants, many with international celebrity chef acclaim, one-of-a-kind shops and entertainment venues, including new elements to the permanent Cirque du Soleil show, La Nouba. Guests can also enjoy larger stores from the likes of Zara, Lilly Pulitzer, UGG, Uniqlo and Sephora.

Disney Just this year, Walt Disney World Resort marked its 45th anniversary. It was 45 years ago on Oct. 1, 1971 when Walt Disney World officially opened, rising from the marshy landscape southwest of Orlando, Florida. The highly anticipated “Florida project” was the dream of visionary Walt Disney. Though he never lived to see opening day, Walt Disney’s legacy of family entertainment lives on in four Florida theme parks, including Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, two water parks, more than two dozen resort hotels, the Disney Springs retail-dining-entertainment complex, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and other venues. Walt Disney once said that Disneyland (and by extension all Disney parks) would never be completed and that it will continue to grow so long as there is imagination left in the world. With this in mind, Disney is upholding the tradition with the opening of numerous new attractions this year throughout all four parks as well as the new shopping and dining experiences at Disney Springs. This year has seen the opening of the Star Wars attractions at Hollywood Studios, an International Food and Wine Festival at Epcot, an all new boat-ride attraction featuring the characters of Frozen also at Epcot, and for the first time in its 18 year history, later opening hours and night-time entertainment at Animal Kingdom.

ORLANDO

Looking forward to 2017, the Most Magical Place on Earth, in collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment will bring to life the mythical world of Pandora, inspired by Cameron’s AVATAR, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. The awe-inspiring land of floating mountains, bioluminescent rainforests and soaring Banshees will give guests a transformational experience they will never forget. Family water park, Typhoon Lagoon is also undergoing some changes with a new family water raft ride being built for 2017 called Miss Fortune Falls. Set to take guests on a splashing journey through the fabled Captain Mary Oceaneer’s past, the new ride will be located near the recently opened ‘water-coaster’ Crush ‘n’ Gusher. One of two water parks at the Disney resort, Typhoon Lagoon boasts a lazy river, tube rides and North America’s largest wave pool that swells up to 6ft! There are plenty of ticket options for all budgets and now with the company’s ‘MagicBands’, guests can enter their Disney Resort hotel room, buy food and merchandise, enter Walt Disney World Resort theme parks and water parks, access their selected FastPass+ experiences and connect to Disney’s PhotoPass all with a tap of the MagicBand. The MagicBands are part of the new MyMagic+, which has the ability to connect nearly all aspects of the guest holiday experience at Walt Disney World Resort. Not just for children and Disney fans alike, the parks are a wondrous spectacle for all to behold from the thrilling coasters of

Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom; Rock n Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith at Hollywood Studios; to the amazing animal experiences at Animal Kingdom and simply out-of-this-world firework and show displays held at the parks almost every night. Walt Disney World provides memories that last a lifetime and old or new, whether this be your first time or your twentieth time, the park’s developments and latest innovations ensure there will always be something new to see whenever you visit. With mild temperatures and sunny blue skies year-round, outdoor activities are virtually limitless for adventure enthusiasts. More than 2,000 lakes, rivers and springs invite visitors to enjoy Orlando for fishing, kayaking or water skiing. The surrounding national parks and acres of lush foliage are a paradise for hikers, cyclists,horseback-riders and those who enjoy adventure trekking, off-road driving and ziplining. Universal CityWalk is home to the Blue Man Group show, more than ten restaurants and nightlife venues, including a karaoke club featuring a live band and back-up singers. And new to Orlando’s tourism corridor is I-Drive 360, an entertainment destination featuring restaurants, shops, live entertainment, attractions and the 400-foot(122-meter) “Coca-Cola Orlando Eye” observation wheel. Nearby, Pointe Orlando features several entertainment venues, including an IMAX Regal Cinemas and the Orlando Improv Comedy Club & Dinner Theatre, in addition to its collection of outdoor shopping and dining options.

Whether you are looking for the perfect spot to enjoy the Walt Disney World® parks or simply want to enjoy the sun in luxurious surroundings, this is the perfect place to stay. Boasting an on-site 5-acre water park, 24-hour fitness centre, 18 hole golf course and spa including; steam room, jacuzzi, experience shower and tranquility lounge, there is plenty to keep you entertained whilst at the resort. And when you fancy venturing out and popping to one of the parks, you can enjoy free transportation. What’s more, you can choose to stay in certain rooms or suites including the Royal or Presidential and enjoy views towards either Epcot or The Magic Kingdom to see the fireworks every night without leaving your room. Perfect for a quiet evening in with some delicious room service after a full day of activities. Four Seasons are renowned worldwide for their incredible levels of quality and service and the Orlando resort is no different. From the moment you reach the entrance - following an impressive trip up the winding driveway - you are welcomed in to a luxurious world away from the noise and lights. A sleek, Mediterranean feel runs throughout the hotel and you won’t be able to ignore the

impressive light fixtures which feature in the public areas. With four restaurants including a rooftop Spanish steakhouse, Capa; modern Italian restaurant, Ravello - complete with demonstration kitchen; a casual restaurant suspended over the lake serving up fresh Florida fare, PB&G and a Cuban-American restaurant and bar located at the onsite Tranquilo Golf Club to enjoy after your round in the sun, Plancha, you will never be left wanting when it comes to food. And if you can’t quite muscle up the strength to venture out to one, you can always enjoy the roundthe-clock in room dining service. Working up an appetite really isn’t that hard in a place like Orlando and especially when there is so much to do at the resort. As a firm favourite for many visitors to Florida, golf features heavily across the region and the Four Seasons has the pleasure of boasting an 18-hole, par 71 Tom Fazio course which was renovated in 2014. Just shy of 7,000 yards, the course features unique central Floridian topography with varying elevation and wetlands along with an abundance of wildlife from birds to deer and of course the odd inevitable alligator (just avoid the water hazards and you will be fine). It really lives up to the name, providing a truly tranquil round of golf, the perfect juxtaposition to a full day at The Magic Kingdom. The resort is also home to the ‘Kids For All Seasons’ service which will provide your children with a couple of hours of fun or the whole day of activities leaving you free to enjoy that tranquility on the golf course. However, if you are short on time but still want to squeeze in a few holes, the club actually offers a 7-hole option which will see you around the course in under 77 minutes, perfect for a quick morning round or instead of an afternoon siesta! The club is open to visitors as well as guests, so there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy the course even if you don’t end up staying and it is highly recommended as a brief escape if you are taking on a two-week family holiday in Orlando. You will feel peaceful, relaxed and ready for the fun to continue. Prices start at £440 per night with many rooms able to accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children. Access to the Tranquilo Golf Club is available throughout the year and tee times can be booked in advance or on the day, just be aware that in the peak season you may be waiting in the bar for a while if you haven’t pre-booked.

Les 110 de Taillevent Just a few minutes from the bustling streets of Oxford and Regent Street, Les 110 de Taillevent is an elegant French Brasserie in the heart of London, overlooking Cavendish Square. Following the tradition of the Michelin two-star Taillevent in Paris, Les 110 de Taillevent in London offers both classic and modern French dishes along with a choice of perfectly paired wines by the glass. Demonstrated by the most beautiful green bottle display behind the bar, the one hundred and ten wines by the glass, along with a wine list of over 400 bins can be enjoyed in the modern yet intimate restaurant for lunch or for dinner Monday to Friday and Saturday dinner. Incredibly well-priced for the area and the quality, the restaurant is the perfect opportunity to broaden your wine knowledge while enjoying some traditional French Brasserie dishes. What’s even better is that while the sommelier will happily guide you through the pairings, the glasses come with handy discs detailing the glass information, allowing you to easily take away the knowledge. The set menu is priced at just £20.00 for two courses at both lunch and dinner, and changes regularly using the best seasonal produce. Beautifully presented sample dishes include, Jerusalem Artichokes veloute; and market vegetables raviole with horseradish bouillon to start; and Dover Sole filet with pak choi and beurre blanc; or Veal blanquette with rice for main making this offering superb for a business lunch, pre-theatre or post-shopping. your The Supercar Killer Lotus have unveiled the latest iteration of their impressive Exige model. The Sport 380 delivers the fastest Exige ever and takes on the six-figure supercar world head-on, but can it really compete at the same level? Lotus certainly think so.

LOTUS EXIGE SPORT 380

The Little Car with a Big Appetite... Weighing in at just 1,100 kg, the new Lotus Exige Sport 380 may not pack the biggest punch, but it’s got a serious taste for its much bigger supercar rivals. Taking the fight straight to six-figure supercars, this new, top-ofthe-range model carries over the lessons learnt in the development of the acclaimed Exige Sport 350, launched last year, but with significant revisions lowering weight, boosting power and enhancing aerodynamics. Rather than relying excessively on electronics, or allow sterile interfaces to dull the experience, the extreme Exige Sport 380 offers a pure, undiluted drive that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. Unrivalled in its class: faster, sharper, and more direct than adversaries, the Exige Sport 380 is definitely not for the timid. With a dry weight of just 1,066 kg with lightweight options, and boasting a potent power-to-weight ratio of 352 hp per tonne, the new, pure-bred Lotus has been conceived to out perform and out manoeuvre so called supercars. The new Exige is blisteringly fast off the line, dispatching 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 178 mph. Jean-Marc Gales, CEO of Group Lotus plc, commented: “We’ve saved something special for

our last new car of 2016. We have built upon the foundations of the excellent Exige Sport 350 and developed a perfectly proportioned, intuitive and attainable supercar for real roads. The cut in weight is nothing short of drastic and, combined with the hike in power and its enhanced agility, we’ve created something exceptional - far greater than the sum of its parts. The Exige Sport 380 is so good, that it is no longer the best in class, it’s now in a class of its own.” Lotus’ approach to developing the perfect sports car has allowed the Exige Sport 380 to lay claim to the title of the best sports car under £100,000. A true supercar car for the road, the Exige focuses on the three key attributes that have made the company a firm favourite with driving enthusiasts: reduced weight, higher performance and honed aerodynamics. Raised on the roads around Hethel, and exercised on the company’s famous test track, the new car can trace its lineage back to the very first Exige, launched in 2000. Now the headline car of the range, sitting above the Sport 350 model, it is

YOUR DRIVE instilled with Lotus’ DNA and packed with a potent 375 hp engine. While employing some of the high-performance components premiered on the Exige Sport 350, Lotus returned to the Lightweight Laboratory in order to cut kilos from the kerb weight. Infused with carbon fibre from front to back, the Exige Sport 380 features hand-made, high-gloss visible weave components as standard to deliver a weight saving when compared to the Exige Sport 350. This includes the front splitter, revised front access panel, new rear wing and rear diffuser surround, which together save 2.7 kg. A lightweight, transparent polycarbonate rear window saves 0.9 kg over the glass equivalent in the Exige Sport 350. In addition, the carbon race seats (-6 kg), lithium- ion battery (-10.3 kg), ultra-lightweight forged wheels and grooved two-piece brake discs (-10 kg) combine to cut a massive 26.3 kg. A new design of rear transom panel now has two rear light clusters, rather than the four on the Exige Sport 350, with reversing and fog lights now mounted inboard, cutting weight by a further 0.3 kg. In line with its illustrious lineage, the Exige Sport 380 employs Lotus’ lightweight extruded and bonded aluminium structure, as the company continues to lead in the field of advanced automotive construction techniques. Lotus is working continuously to engineer out the excess mass from its cars, and the company’s chassis technology remains the benchmark. The company’s powertrain division has left its mark on the car, with the uprated 3.5-litre supercharged V6 engine generating 375 hp at 6,700 rpm and 410 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Refined from extensive testing and development, it’s a design that’s proved its mettle by powering some of Lotus’ latest supercars, including the track-focused 3-Eleven and the recently revealed Evora Sport 410.

The power boost comes from a revised supercharger pulley, which increases charge pressure, an uprated fuel pump, a recalibrated ECU and the introduction of a revised exhaust system - as used in the Evora 400 and Evora Sport 410. Allowing owners to enjoy the new Exige for longer between fuel stops, it also comes with an enlarged, 48-litre petrol tank. Providing faster, cleaner changes, the six-speed manual gearbox uses Lotus’ acclaimed open-gate design. Eliminating lateral movement, by precisely aligning components, it features light-weight machined and cast aluminium parts. Aesthetically appealing, the open transmission mechanism also helps contribute to the car’s reduced weight. The car is also available with an optional six-speed automatic gearbox, where drivers can select gears sequentially via the forged aluminium paddles located behind the steering wheel, or rely on the gearbox’s fully automatic mode however you won’t get the incredibly cool open transmission. The automatic gearbox option will be available from Spring next year. In addition to its already impressive credentials, it’s possible to sharpen the Exige further still. Opting for the full exhaust system in titanium improves the car’s overall balance, by removing 10 kg from beyond the rear axle. For customers who frequently go to the track, the optional Track Pack provides Nitron two-way adjustable dampers and Eibach adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars. Every aspect of this car has been specifically developed to provide the best level of performance possible, and it shows. What is most surprising is how much they are asking for it. The Lotus Exige Sport 380 is available as a roadster as standard and as a coupe as an option and starts at a quite remarkable £67,900... yes you read that correctly, it is less than seventy thousand pounds sterling.

ALFA ROMEO STELVIO

Alfa Joins The SUV Party Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in Quadrifoglio guise, Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio is the first SUV for the brand in over a century of history. Unsurprising that it comes at a time when the market appears to be revealing a new contender every other week, but what does this mean for the segment? Alfa Romeo have remained true to their ethos throughout the company’s long history and continue to do so despite the inevitable venture away from the expected. The motoring world has been gradually transforming over recent years and the distinct shift in focus for many global brands is merely an indicative response to the change. You may question whether it is right for a company like Alfa Romeo who were born from a rich Italian motor-racing heritage to even consider developing and producing cars for the SUV sector, however, thanks to some fairly sound connections, Alfa Romeo have managed to utilise some of the expertise and knowhow from their even sportier counterparts, Ferrari. As a result, you will find a 2.9-litre V6 BiTurbo petrol engine - made entirely out of aluminium to save weight - under the bonnet developed using inspiration from Ferrari technologies which boasts a staggering 517PS. Paired with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission which will make gear changes in just 150 milliseconds in Race Mode, it is set to make an impact on the road, or track. On top of the 517PS unit that’s exclusive to the Quadrifoglio guises, Alfa Romeo has also confirmed that the other engines in the Stelvio range will include the 280 HP 2.0-litre Turbo petrol with 8-speed automatic transmission. This is an all-aluminium 4-cylinder unit that puts out 284PS at 5,250 rpm and maximum torque of 400Nm at 2,250 rpm. In addition to the MultiAir electrohydraulic valve actuation system, the distinctive features of this engine include the “2-in-1” turbo system and the 200-bar high-pressure direct injection system, which deliver a particularly quick response to accelerator inputs across the rev range, plus first-class fuel-efficiency. The suspension system for Stelvio Quadrifoglio features exclusive AlfaLinkTM technology delivering outstanding levels of lateral grip as well as a natural, instinctive drive regardless of the speed and conditions. Supported by Alfa Romeo’s unique Integrated Brake System (IBS) combining stability control with a traditional servo brake to guarantee instantaneous brake response

and short stopping distances, while significantly contributing to weight optimisation and carbon-ceramic brakes, you can be sure that you will be cornering and stopping just as quick as you’ll be accelerating. It’s not only in the performance stakes that Alfa are looking to make an impression, the styling is by no means reserved. The very nature of an SUV requires much larger, well, everything and the Italian marque are not holding back. However, they are not simply going bigger, they have managed to use the same design ideas that have been synonymous with the brand throughout its history to create something quite unique. Stelvio has such a strong identity, built around a few select features, like the cloverleaf front end, which is one of the most famous and recognisable hallmarks in automotive styling. The front end of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio also embodies a strong hint of power and aggression, thanks chiefly to the specific air vents for the intercoolers and the classic apertures around the shield-shaped grille. The back end of this car is instantly eyecatching too, because of the sporting appearance it gets from its lower portion, characterised by the four exhaust tips, and from the “Kamm tail” styling that gives the car a unique, unmistakeable character, while also paying tribute to Alfa Romeo’s history because this distinctive design also featured on some of its most prestigious performance-oriented models and competition cars. Everything about this car has been developed and built from the road up. Starting with its name, the new venture for Alfa Romeo is guaranteed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. The Stelvio pass is the highest mountain pass in Italy - second highest in Europe - and the 20 km road that crosses it boasts over 75 bends, breath-taking views and a dizzyingly quick rise in altitude, all the way up to 2,758 metres. Over the years, champions of cycling and motorsport have done battle there, making the route a fully fledged sporting legend. An important transport artery in the war years of the last century, this winding road has now become a major tourist attraction. To enjoy it as it is meant to be enjoyed and squeeze every last drop of pleasure out of this unique experience - by oneself or in the company of friends and family - this is designed to be the only SUV capable of offering an unrivalled combination of driving pleasure, Italian styling and versatility.

Last of the Berlinetta Boxers 1982 Ferrari BB 512i

OUT OF THIS WORLD

The last in the series of Berlinetta Boxer’s from Ferrari, just 1,007 examples of the BB 512i were produced from 1981 through to 1984. The BB series saw Ferrari bring a mid-mounted flat-12 engine, replacing the FR layout Daytona, which was succeeded in the Ferrari stable by the Testarossa. The cars were designed by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina and the Boxer was the very first mid-engined road-car to bear the Ferrari name. Packing a 4.9-litre F12, the 512i produced 340PS and 451Nm of torque pushing the car from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 160. This car was delivered new in Germany in 1982 then subsequently registered in Spain from 2003 circa 2009. A left hand drive model finished in a very attractive colour combination of metallic grey with magnolia leather interior. Showing 60,000 kms on the clock, it has the original service book stamped with photographs of recent restoration work. Original owners wallet, handbook, full tool set - in the case - and Ferrari Classiche certificate book are all present.

SAVILLS

The Rise of the Super Mews with Duncan Petrie, Head of Mews Sales

London’s charming mews streets provide a wealth of unique and attractive houses. Typically set back from busy roads they provide a secluded, elegant haven from city life. Mews owners describe the sense of community they enjoy, making these some of the London’s friendliest and welcoming streets to live on. Traditionally, mews were built in the streets behind the grand townhouses and served as stables, horse-drawn carriage storage and accommodation for the grooms. Many have now been transformed into light, open-plan spaces with all the modern conveniences, the ground-floor stables turned into garages - a world away from their original purpose. Though the average price per square foot for a London mews is around £1,800, last year a mews house broke through the £3,000 per sq ft barrier with a record sale of over £20m. And while sales at this level still account for less than 5 per cent of transactions, it demonstrates that the premium for the very best mews properties is increasing. Recent analysis from our research team highlights that prices in Prime Central London fell by 3.9 per cent over a 12-month period to Q2 of this year, while mews houses managed to increase in value, albeit it by a modest 0.6 per cent - but a promising indicator they will hold their value. Mews houses are often thought

of as smaller homes, but they can be deceiving and they are frequently larger and more exciting than the facade suggests. Typically located in prestigious postcodes but often in short supply, these hidden gems are now being taken to extraordinary levels and a new generation of ‘super mews’ is beginning to establish itself. There are very few listed mews houses in London which makes them highly sought-after by those wishing to take on a project. Developers and mews-owners alike are cleverly incorporating an extra level of living on the lower ground floor along with roof mansard extensions, finding innovative ways to inject natural light and volume and creating outside space, all features which traditional mews properties typically lack. In some instances these super mews are new builds, or have been completely rebuilt behind their charming original facade. As a result we are also seeing exciting new features appearing such as living walls, mezzanine levels, lifts, retractable ceilings and spa facilities. This new breed of super mews is catering for discerning buyers who will not compromise on the conveniences of 21st-century living, and helps explain why Savills has seen enquiries rise by around 12 per cent in the last year alone, with growing interest from Middle Eastern and North American buyers.

Getting your garden ready for Spring with Kate Gould

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com

When you think of a winter garden you probably imagine strong evergreen topiary and frosted seed heads set prettily against a crystal blue sky with sharp early morning light sparkling through. Unfortunately the UK winters are now so unpredictable that we cannot guarantee those crisp cold sunny mornings that warrant planting a garden solely for its winter seed heads. My own garden is full of late summer colour which will continue flowering up to the first frosts but just in case we have another damp soggy winter this year I am going to cut the seed heads down and feed and mulch it with well rotted manure to prepare it for the summer next year instead. Although it will leave the garden looking very empty over the winter I can cope with that as long as I know that the earth is getting ready for a fabulous spring next year under its blanket of ‘black gold’ as manure is otherwise known. If you garden in a Mediterranean way with gravel and scree

then adding more gravel to the garden gives the same effect as an organic mulch. It obviously wont feed the plants but most of these plants are quite happy on a lean diet and don’t require the boost. Other jobs that you might like to tackle before and during the winter: • Tie in climbing plants to make sure they are secure and the wind doesn’t damage them over the winter, this is especially important for climbing roses. • Rake up autumnal fallen leaves out of the borders and off lawns and compost to provide an organic mulch next year. Leafmould is a great soil improver and information about how best to make this can be found at www.rhs.org.uk • Clean your pots. It isn’t the most pleasurable of jobs but will help to keeps pests and diseases at bay next year. If you are lucky enough to have somewhere frost free to store them do so after cleaning.

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD

Donald Trump and Beppe Grillo Our financial insider reviews the global markets Donald Trump is the next US President. The world was stunned. The Republicans have also won the majority seats in Congress, beating the Democrats in both the Senate and the House. On 8 November, the actual day of election, Asian markets panicked and came off on the back of Trump leading the race and Europe opened low. Surprisingly, the US market opened strong and seemed to be celebrating the Trump victory. The S&P 500 index rallied 3.4% from 2131.52 to 2204.72 from 7th November to 23rd November. Trump made comments about removing Obamacare and Dodd Frank. Healthcare stocks and banking stocks put on a massive rally. Pfizer and Merck were up 3.4% and 2.6% from 7th to 24th November. JP Morgan share prices went from USD 69.88 to USD 78.86, up 12.9%, in the same period. Citibank, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America Merrill Lynch all went up 13.8%, 17.0%, 20.7% and 20.9% respectively in the same period. The market took Trump’s ‘America First’ gesture very seriously and the USD strengthened against all major currencies. USD JPY moved 8% from 104.2 to 112.6 between 8 November and 24 November. The Chinese Yuan weakened from 2.3%, the EUR and GBP also lost 5% and 0.4% against USD. Gold dropped to USD 1180 level as investors expect US Fed to increase interest rates in December - a strong currency with an expectation of a rate hike attracts a lot of money. The USD’s strength may be fiercer than anyone could have expected, but there were signs. Bank of Japan has been waiting for this opportunity to welcome a strong USD. Remember when Bank of Japan announced QQE in October, the market did not react much, the market knew Bank of Japan was running out of tricks to depreciate JPY as the market was willing to bet that Bank of Japan cannot push JPY weaker. However, Bank of Japan can wait for a stronger USD and the US President Election was the catalyst. As JPY weakened, the Japan stock market has been strong. Nikkei 225 has rallied from 7% from 8th November to 25th November. On the other hand, Eurostoxx 50 rallied 1% from 7th November to 24th November. FTSE100 went up 0.3% in the same period. Banking stocks in Europe also enjoyed a nice rally. HSBC went up from GBp 59.15 to GBp 61.45 from 7th to 24th November. Lloyds, Barclays, Duetsche Bank, Credit Suisse and BNP were up 6.4%, 16.3%, 11.0%, 11.3% and 5.3% respectively in the same period. December could be a difficult month for Europe with the Italy referendum taking place on 4 December. Could this be the third

political surprise this year after Brexit and Donald Trump? Mr Matteo Renzi, Italy’s Prime Minister and leader of the centre-left Democratic Party, is putting up a referendum to reduce power from Italy’s 20 regional governments and the Senate. It is a threatening tactic and Mr Renzi is saying to voters either to give him more power or he will step down. A bit aggressive from an Italian in some eyes. The flip side of passing this referendum is that if the Prime Minister is a disaster, the Senate can do very little and Italy will be stuck with the wrong leader for 5 years. If the referendum dose not get passed, Mr Renzi is likely to step down. Then Mr Beppe Grillo, a former comedian and leader of the Five Star Movement, may get a shot at the top job. The former stand-up comedian is outspoken and he wants to abandon the euro. Five Star Movement is an anti-establishment party and they want to leave the Eurozone.

‘Italeave’ may become a real word rather than a joke on Twitter. If the outcome is yes, Mr Renzi gets the power he wants. All future Italy Prime Ministers would also benefit from it and enjoy a 5 years guarantee mandate. Such power could be mis-used and may not be good for the country in the long run. Especially if the next Prime Minister is Mr Grillo, Italeave may happen. If the outcome is no, Mr Renzi steps down and Mr Grillo may also be the next Prime Minister. Mr Grillo may call a referendum on abandoning the euro. At least, there will be balance from the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and Mr Grillo may not get what he wants. Either way, Italy is clearly at a point of unstable equilibrium and more conflicts within the country are expected. Yes may mean short term positive for the Euro and no could trigger panic selling.

To some people, selling by auction sounds old-fashioned and specialised, but in fact this new way of auctioning is quite the opposite and can really get you the most value for your property - especially in today’s online world. In addition, you can choose to pay no estate agency fees; if you select the reservation fee method of sale the buyer would be asked pay a non refundable fee in addition to the purchase price. This covers the fee you would generally pay us. There is a small fee for an EPC and professional photography (if required) and for an auction pack.

To find out more about this exciting, zero agency fee option, call us at Reeds Rains Walderslade on 01634 200279 Please note that if you have already Instructed another agent you should check any agreement you may have to ensure that you are not liable for more than one commission by instructing us as your agent.
