Island Golf
from Your Mayfair
your travel

Situated just off the northwest coast of West Africa in the Atlantic Ocean and just three and a half hours from London, the archipelago of Madeira is home to three breathtaking golf courses, and it is no surprise that this glorious island paradise has been growing in popularity amongst golfers worldwide. So much so that it was awarded the World’s Best Emerging Golf Destination by the World Golf Awards in 2019.
Blessed with blue skies, beautiful beaches and otherwise known as ‘the island of eternal spring’ the championship courses here offer spectacular views with magnificent mountain backdrops. One of Portugal’s most beautiful provinces, the pleasant all year-round temperatures mean you can play golf anytime. Furthermore, it is a regular fixture on the European tour for the Madeira Islands Open - a testament to the quality of the courses available here.
Palheiro Golf Course and Clube de Golf Santo da Serra and both on Madeira itself while the third course, Porto Santo Golfe lies a short hop away on the island of the same name and is one of four which comprises the archipelago.

For your visit to the Palheiro Golf Course, one of Madeira’a absolute finest, stay at the Meliã Madeira Mare Resort Hotel & Spa which is only a fifteen-minute drive away. The hotel is also a short distance from the centre of Funchal, the island’s capital, and is one of the most fashionable districts and nightspots in Madeira. The rooms are modern and contemporary with private balconies and as well as an indoor pool there is a spectacular 260m² lagoon pool which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.
Designed by American Cabell B Robinson, one of Europe’s most renowned golf designers, the impressive Palheiro golf course opened in 1993 and is located within the magnificent Palheiro Estate which is more than 200 years old and borders the five-star Casa Velha Palheiro Hotel. Famous for its beautiful design which meanders through a pristine environment of maritime and botanical woodland garnished with lush, sub-tropical vegetation, golfers can experience some truly exceptional scenery as they make their way around the course.
At nearly 1,640 ft above sea level, the location enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean as well as Funchal, nestling below and

just ten minutes away. The par 72, 6,656-yard course takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain with abrupt ridges and deep valleys. This course is listed inside continental Europe’s top 200 in one benchmark course ranking and the presence of the splendid Palheiro Hotel secured its spot in the top 80 in two recent ‘Best European Golf Resort’ lists.
Situated 12km from Funchal and located at the top of a cliff, Galo Resort Hotel Galomar is a perfect location for your visit to Clube de Golf Santo da Serra. Newly opened in 2018 and a premium green hotel which is 100% self-sufficient in energy, this luxury ocean-front hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool with seawater and a luxurious spa with panoramic sea view saunas.
Another of Madeira’s top courses with 3 loops of 9, at Santo da Serra golfers are treated to a quality course with a brilliantly accessible design. Originally dating back to 1937, it was redesigned in 1991 by English American Robert Trent Jones Sr. To his credit, Robert designed or redesigned over 500 golf courses in 45 American states and 35 other countries.
At Santo da Serra he created a spectacular 27-hole complex in a beautiful, natural landscape with views of Porto Santo and the Bay

of Machico where Portuguese navigators first landed in 1419. The Machico and Desertas nines form the 6,825-yard championship course on which the PGA European Tour’s Madeira Islands Open was held on 10 occasions. The third and fourth signature holes on the Machico sit atop cliffs more than 2,200ftabove the Atlantic and the 3,193-yard Serra course offers a delightful alternative with lakes and mountain views along further terrain.
Porto Santo Island just off the coast of Madeira is the home to Porto Santo Golfe. A short twenty-minute flight or a two-and-ahalf-hour cruise will cover the 27 miles between Madeira and the archipelago’s eastern-most island.
Designed by the great Seve Ballesteros and measuring in at 7,036 yards, the course opened in 2004 and is built to environmentally conscious standards. Comprising two distinct nines, spanning an area from sand dunes to basalt cliffs, you will play alongside the Atlantic Ocean, lakes and dramatic clifftops. Offering the perfect combination of natural beauty alongside a tough test of golf whilst blending in with the natural landscape, the unique characteristics of this course arguably make it one of the best golf courses in Europe. The signature hole is undoubtedly the 200-yard, par-three

13th which requires a shot over a gorge to reach a cliff-top green.
Playing golf and experiencing the many charms of Madeira has never been easier for travelling golfers with the launch of the island’s new Golf Passport in 2021. Unveiled by Madeira. Belongs to All, the consumer-facing brand of the Madeira Promotion Bureau, the passport is a one-stop shop for visitors eager to play Madeira’s three world-class golf courses and discover why the Portuguese Islands have been acclaimed as the world’s best emerging golf destination.

Borough Market at Easter
Complete with a life-sized Tree of Hope.
Putting community at the heart of Easter this year, Borough Market will be displaying a four-metre-high Easter Tree of Hope, decorated with more than 200 wooden eggs hand painted by local schools, charities and friends of the Market, filled with blossom and surrounded by a cornucopia of fruit and vegetables from Market traders to create a sense of Spring abundance.
Situated at the original centre of Borough Market in Middle Row, near the Market Bell, the tree will be revealed to the public on Wednesday 13th April and will be decorated with messages and drawings of hope for the future to lift people’s spirits and show solidarity in light of recent events. The tree will remain in place until 19th April.
Those who have contributed to the installation include primary school children involved in the Borough Market and School Food Matters’ Young Marketeers Programme; secondary schools that take part in Southwark Young Entrepreneurs, who host two sales in the Market per year; members and volunteers of Plan Zheroes, who redistribute surplus food from the Market to local charities and organisations; members of the Borough Market Cookbook Club, which is hosted by Angela Clutton; Southwark Cathedral Early Learning Centre and Junior Church Families; and the Market’s traders and staff.
In addition to the 200 plus eggs strung on vegetable dyed ribbons found on the Easter Tree of Hope, there will be a further eight giant eggs that will form a special family Easter egg trail in the Market. Participants will need to find the answers to the Borough Market Easter Quiz displayed on the eggs hidden amongst the numerous stalls. There will be 50 delicious chocolatey prizes up for grabs each day, from trader So Chocolicious for those taking part in the trail.
The giant eggs have been specially decorated by artist and illustrator Rosie Brooks, who is a long-standing supporter of Borough Market and has recently become a volunteer for Plan Zheroes for their twice-weekly collections at the Market.
Those visiting during the Easter holidays can expect to find high quality seasonal produce perfect for the Easter table including spring lamb, asparagus, new potatoes, hot cross buns and more. A selection of Easter recipes to cook at home can also be found on the Borough Market website.
Over the Easter weekend Borough Market will be open on Good Friday from 10am-5pm and will be operating extended hours on Saturday 16th from 8am-5pm. The Market will be closed on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday to allow traders to enjoy some time off with their families and friends.
