Tall Ships Regatta 2017 13th - 16th April
Over the Easter weekend in 2017, Greenwich will host the Rendez-vous Tall Ships Regatta 2017. The regatta, organised by Sail Training International, will sail from Greenwich to Quebec in Canada, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. The fleet of over 30 large Class A and B Tall Ships will gather for four days (13-16 April) on the River Thames at Greenwich and Woolwich before setting sail for Canada via Sines in Portugal, Bermuda and Boston. The ships will be anchored at two festival sites in the royal borough - at the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greenwich town centre, and the Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich. Some ships will even be open for visitors to get on board to look around and talk to the crew. Visitors can buy tickets to get on board majestic Tall Ships for cruises on the Thames to Tower Bridge and back. Tickets for daytime and evening sails for business or corporate functions are also available. A host of maritime entertainment and live music will take place during the event, before a huge Parade of Sail starting at 5pm from Deptford Creek on Sunday 16 April. During the Parade of Sail, the whole Tall Ships fleet will sail together down the Thames to the sea, before crossing the Atlantic and arriving in Quebec on 18 July 2017. Over 50 local young people are taking part in the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta with sponsored places on-board a Tall Ship. They will be sailing to Portugal in the first leg of the Regatta as part of an experienced crew, learning navigation and sailing skills. April 2017 will see the running of the 163rd Boat Race and 72nd Women’s Boat Race, both now taking place on the Championship Course on the 2 April. Watched by thousands along the banks of the Tideway, between Putney and Mortlake in London, and by millions more on TV around the world, The Cancer Research UK Boat Races are a unique sporting event. Gamers Unite Now Play This - 7th - 9th April Game Changers: Another Way to Play - 7th April - 7th May This April, Somerset House will host a month-long celebration of games and play, beginning with the return of popular gaming weekender, Now Play This, and the launch of a new exhibition examining how games and the possibilities for play are evolving. Events and installations will explore new themes within this culturally and economically important industry, showcasing the latest in game design and technology, and revisiting classic favourites. Opening the celebrations, Now Play This - a three-day event coinciding with the city-wide games initiative, London Games Festival - will be filled with a host of hands-on opportunities for visitors to get involved; from two-player board games to interactive multiplayer installations, outdoor activities to experimental video games. Highlights will include a post-apocalyptic mini-golf course on Somerset House’s River Terrace, a ping-pong table that creates a work of art as you play, and a physical, team-based challenge to stop the bubonic plague. Game Changers: Another Way to Play continues through the month, until 7 May. The exhibition will show how designers and artists continuously adapt the mechanics of familiar games in imaginative ways. Using three game varieties – billiards, chess and mazes – as a starting point, it will demonstrate how games are not so much created as constantly reinvented and transformed over time by new technologies and ideas. It will showcase a number of exciting new works by contemporary artists that draw
on these traditional methods of play, alongside archival material and imagery charting the evolution through different forms and media. Also new for 2017 will be The Ten Second Room, filled with games exploring the way duration impacts play. Each will challenge players to complete a task at top speed, whether trying a hand at being a virtual make-up artist or sketching a digital masterpiece. The festival will also debut three brand new games which have been specially commissioned for Now Play This from international artists, Patrick Smith (Vector Park), Lee Shang Lun, and Yara El-Shabini.

Virgin Money London Marathon 23rd April
More than just a race, the London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event in the world, with 35,000 runners creating an amazing atmosphere. Currently sponsored by Virgin Money and referred to as the Virgin Money London Marathon, the race is held every spring in London. This year sees the 37th Marathon take place on 23 April 2017. Founded by former Olympic champion and journalist Chris Brasher and Welsh athlete John Disley, the race, a distance of 42.195km (26 miles and 385 yards), is set over a largely flat course around the River Thames, beginning at three separate points around Blackheath and finishing in The Mall alongside St. James’s Park. Since the first marathon back in 1981, the course has undergone very few route changes. In 1982, the finishing post was moved from Constitution Hill to Westminster Bridge due to construction works and remained there for twelve years before moving to its present location at The Mall. The event is one of the five top world marathons that make up the World Marathon Majors competition and has raised over £770 million for charity since 1981. Other World Marathon Majors include Berlin, Boston, Chicago and New York City. While it is a serious athletic event, with a large sum of prize money attracting elite athletes, public perception of the race is mainly dominated by club and fun runners. A wide range of weird and wonderful fancy dress outfits can be seen in the name of charity and more than 75 per cent of the 37,000+ runners on Sunday 23 April will be raising money for charity. Also contributing to the charity raising are a number of
well-known faces who take to the streets to help a wide variety of well-deserving charities such as Cancer Research, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, British Heart Foundation, Kidney Research UK and many, many more. This year is set to be no different with a host of names from both the sporting and entertainment world taking part. Famous faces to look out for include Scouting for Girls, Katie Hopkins, Sophie Raworth, Rob Deering, and Jenni Falconer. Presenter Chris Evans will be running for BBC’s Children in Need and Former England and Premier League footballer Danny Mills will also be running for Cancer Research UK. Eastender Adam Woodyatt, who has famously played Ian Beale in EastEnders since the hit BBC show first began in 1985, will be running alongside his son Sam, 19. The pair decided to run the Virgin Money London Marathon last summer, agreeing to raise money for The Air Ambulance. They never expected that within a few months Sam would be needing an air ambulance after being hit by a car in London and flown to hospital. Sam was initially put in an induced coma following the accident and then spent time recovering in a wheelchair. But he never lost his drive to take part in the marathon alongside his dad and the duo are more eager than ever to get to the Finish Line and raise as much money as possible. 2017 Masters Tournament April marks the beginning of golf ’s fi rst major of the season. The US Masters, unlike the other three major golf championships, is always played on the same course. The Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA has been home to the tournament since 1934 following completion of the course designed by Bobby Jones and course architect Alister MacKenzie. The invitational event boasts a smaller fi eld than other majors as a result, but will still see the world’s best players including Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Henrik Stenson taking on the tricky Augusta course in a bid to win the coveted Green Jacket. And as an offi cial money event on the PGA Tour, European Tour and Japan Golf Tour, it will be more than the iconic Green Jacket that the winner will be taking home. The 2017 tournament takes place over four days, between 6 April and 9 April with the traditional parthree tournament also taking place on 5 April. Sky Sports will off er full coverage, as well BBC Radio 5 live. The BBC will also be showing a documentary on last year’s champion Danny Willett, telling the extraordinary story of the Sheffi eld golfer who last year became the fi rst Briton to win the Masters since 1996, after the early arrival of his baby Zachariah enabled him to take part after initially thinking he wouldn’t be able to play. Baselworld, as always, has thrown a whole host of innovative new mechanics, reimagined models and updates to current pieces, but the diving world will be pleased with the display of waterproof watches worthy of any divers wrist that have come to light. True to a pioneering mindset that goes back to its origins 279 years ago, Favre-Leuba has completely rethought how to display elapsed time when diving. The Raider Harpoon watch makes this vital information clearer and easier to read than ever. Minutes are shown by an extremely visible hand that points to large, luminescent markers on the dial. A unidirectional bezel indicates remaining dive time. Hours are displayed on a rotating disc with Roman numerals that is driven by an ingenious patented mechanism. The speed at which this luminescent indicator rotates
is calculated so that it returns to its starting point after exactly 12 hours. The diver simply focuses on the hand, which also points to the hour thanks to the rotating disc that moves with it. Crafted from steel or gunmetal PVD-treated steel, the case measures 46mm and features a unidirectional rotating bezel in anodised aluminium. Complete with helium valve and sapphire crystal which is glareproofed on both sides. The Raider Harpoon is water-resistant to an impressive 500 metres (50 bar / 1650 ft). It features a patented hour display on a luminescent disc rotating around the perimeter of the dial with seconds disc and movement operating indicator in the centre. Breitling has redesigned its Superocean Héritage line, dedicated to modern-day explorers. The result is a new face as original, pure and dynamic as ever, for this highly successful collection that is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017. First launched in 1957, the Superocean professional diving watch - rapidly adopted by the first enthusiasts of leisure diving - has since spawned several generations of instruments boasting peerless aquatic performance. Yet Breitling has also preserved the spirit of the original model in a line named Superocean Héritage that has become one of the brand’s stellar collections, thanks to its unique and timeless look combined with cutting-edge technology.
To mark the 60th anniversary of this pioneer of wide-open spaces, Breitling have reinvigorated its iconic design while maintaining its unique character. The main development has taken the form of a new steel bezel with an ultra-hard hightech ceramic ring that is scratchproof and extremely shock-resistant. The elimination of the metal ring surrounding the minute circle means the bezel appears to form a seamless whole with the dial in a matching color, adorned with the original Superocean logo. The unusual shape of the hands (triangular for the hours and lozenge-like for the minutes), along with the slightly cone-shaped hour-markers, reinforces ties with the 1957 model, while ensuring optimal legibility enhanced by luminescent markers. The Manufacture Caliber B20 COSCcertified powering the Superocean Héritage II 42 and 46 models, is a high-precision, reliably robust selfwinding movement endowed with a 70-hour power reserve. Derived from the Tudor Caliber MT5612 and flaunting exclusive finishing, it represents one aspect of the recent cooperation between the two brands that are now pooling their expertise in the development and production of certain mechanical movements. Rolex has introduced the latest generation of its Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller, a legend among professional divers’ watches created 50 years ago in 1967. The new Sea-Dweller features a larger, 43 mm case and the new calibre 3235, at the forefront of watchmaking technology and employed for the first time in a Rolex Professional category watch. To enhance the reading of the date, it is equipped, also for the first time, with a Cyclops lens on the crystal at 3 o’clock. The dial bears the name Sea-Dweller in red, a reference to the first model. The Sea-Dweller’s incredible Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 1,220 metres (4,000 feet), is equipped with one of the inventions that contributed to its stature: the helium escape valve, patented by Rolex in 1967. While preserving the waterproofness of the watch, this ingenious safety valve regulates the pressure accumulated in the case during the decompression phases of deepwater saturation dives.
WATCHES The “Tribute to Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC” is fitted with Blancpain’s in-house automatic winding caliber 1151, comprising 210 components including two series-coupled mainspring barrels and offering a four-day power reserve. Nestled into its stainless steel 40mm case, the movement as well as its solid gold winding rotor with a NAC coating (a platinum alloy) and Blancpain logo, are visible through the clear sapphire case back. The balancespring is in silicon, a material that offers many advantages. Firstly, its low density makes it lighter and thus more shock-resistant. In addition, it is impervious to magnetic fields. The resulting balance spring is ideally shaped, thereby ensuring improved isochronism performance of the movement, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision. This new model naturally features the entire set of technical characteristics of a watch dedicated to diving, established by the original 1953 Fifty Fathoms and later followed by the entire watch industry. Its black dial features indexes in Super-LuminNova® and a water-tightness indicator recalling the designs of the 1950s MILSPEC 1. The unidirectional rotating bezel covered in scratchresistant sapphire, a Blancpain innovation which first appeared in 2003 with the 50th Anniversary Fifty Fathoms, protects the luminescent indications underneath. This timepiece is water resistant to 30 bar, which is equivalent to 300 meters. It is limited to 500 examples and is offered with a NATO strap, sail cloth strap, or steel bracelet with a secure buckle.
Each watch is limited to 3,557 pieces and delivered inside a presentation box inspired by the original 1957 packaging, right down to the Seahorse on the lid, a retro logo and red corduroy lining. The presentation box contains two spare straps; leather and NATO, as well as a tool to change them. The very first Seamaster 300 was highly sought after, not only for its superb waterresistance, but also for its black dial, broad arrow hour hand, bi-directional diving bezel, and recessed triangular hour markers. Built for divers and underwater adventurers, it quickly became an icon of innovation and style. The 2017 Seamaster 300 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Master Chronometer 39 mm model, based on the CK2913, features a black aluminium bezel and retains the original’s Naïad sign on the crown, which back in ‘57 was a mark of the watch’s exceptional water resistance. The Seahorse on the caseback is drawn just as it was in 1957. It is powered by the Omega Master Chronometer calibre 8806.

The international watch market has been particularly volatile over the past 5 years with theories of over production to falling sales in certain markets affecting the overall picture. Cartier, like all brands, has felt the effects of this uncertainty. However, unlike others, they took decisive action in lessening their output and specifically limiting supply of precious metal models, helping their retail partners to focus on holding more commercial stock and tiding over a difficult period. This positive action ensures a respectively loyal and positive attitude from the retailer and in turn solidifies Cartier’s market position. Alongside this internal movement, the novelties presented at this year’s SIHH fair in Geneva were equally consumer friendly and market reactive. A beloved favourite in the Panthere model was rereleased without too many changes bring in a new generation of fans, especially with a such a strong emphasis on vintage in the current market. However, it was their mens collection that has really caught our attention. The Panthere is a solid return of a classic and will nestle nicely amongst the other ladies pieces but the new Drive de Cartier Moonphase is quite exceptional on many levels. The original Drive collection was released last year, delivered in both steel and precious metal with an entry level version offering time and date, alongside a small complication Second Timezone variant with an ingenious system of manipulating the second time by depressing the crown thus eliminating the need for pesky pushers. A high complication skeleton model was the cherry on this proverbial cake. The Drive collection was a distinct first in many ways for Cartier. It carried Cartier’s now standard in-house MP-1904 base movement and the second timezone complication was also created within their manufacture. This is not new but the delivery is. The first time we saw the MP-1904 was in the Tank MC, a squared modern incarnation of the Tank series, which in turn led to this movement being used all across the board in the very successful
Calibre de Cartier family. It is typically recognised by the slightly dipped sub dial at 6 o’clock. Both of these models, though a success, were quite sporty and very much a deviation from Cartier’s usual in-house executions. One can look to the Roadster & even Pasha Seatimer in recent years but neither of these models carried movement created entirely by Cartier. In a era where transparency is important, the new in-house calibre is necessary part of Cartier’s future. The now discontinued Collection Privee was usually only offered at Cartier’s boutiques, delivering fantastic complications explicitly in precious metal and executed in their classic cases such as the Ronde and Tortue. Though the Tank MC and Calibre have brought a new client into the realm of what Cartier is capable of creating, there was still room to cater for those who appreciate the brand’s mystique rather than just work on safer designs. This is where the Drive de Cartier fits perfectly. It is offered in steel so not too exclusive and the design carries all the hallmarks of Cartier’s

WATCHES DNA over the last century. The curvature of the case uses both polished and brushed surfaces creating beautiful poise from all angles with the curved sapphire glass catches the light to give a little sparkle but not diminishing the immediate view of the wearer. The exhibition glass caseback is a nice window into the soul of the watch showcasing their handiwork and decorated elegantly with Geneva stripes. The new Moonphase model is another solid pillar in this delightful collection. Note that the date window has been removed leaving just the moonphase display at 6’clock. This is intentionally done for two reasons. Firstly, it keeps the price more respective for the end user. Allowing for political implications and currency fluctuations, watches have not only become more expensive, the end user has also become more careful with their money therefore value for money has never been more important. Secondly, with the date in place, you would lose the symmetry of the face. Cartier above all are an elegant brand with designs focused on art and beauty as much as the necessary ergonomics. The instantly recognisable pronounced Roman Numerals are in play with Cartier’s secret signature and the moonphase aperture fulfils the role previously occupied by the seconds sub dial. This balance provides core characteristics to the Drive collection, meaning whether date model, Dual time variant or this new Moonphase version, they are all instantly recognisable as Drive de Cartier. As everything else on the model has been very well thought
out, the most vital feature has also been given the most attention. The Moonphase is not a glamorous addition but rather a fully functioning complication with an accurate representation of a full moon twice a month. The disc is painted with vivid blues and golds that enjoy a little life when caught at the right angle but is very easy to read as well. Returning always to aesthetics, Cartier’s imaging of this model is based on being fully aware that a mechanical watch is now not a necessity. Therefore, for this industry to stay relevant, you must either pursue the Tag Heuer’s route of electronic connectivity or remain faithful to the whole point of modern watchmaking, Every contemporary brand that would mirror Cartier in terms of vision, history and endurance understand that today, it is almost a romantic notion that draws the wearer to their watch. They appreciate the skill and ability of the watchmaker to create these mini masterpieces. The need to know the date or tell the time or especially be aware of the phases of the moon is not vital using a wristwatch so the pure notion of wearing one, yet alone a mechanical one that is expensive is down to these other factors now. The design, small complication and just the name Cartier is synonymous with these traits and has been for well over a century. The Drive de Cartier series is the latest in a fine collection of watches from the brand that really set the tone for our modern industry but moreso, this model is a fine and welcome return to a classic style of gentleman’s watch from Cartier.

However, there is another side to the city in the dessert, and it is one that will get the adrenaline pumping in a completely different way to the thrill of the casino. Already well established as a go-to destination, Las Vegas welcomed a staggering 42.9 million visitors in 2016 with figures set to increase further through 2017. One way in which the city is aiming to achieve even higher numbers is through the range of activities on offer, appealing to an even broader audience and drawing in visitors that, until now, have had little reason to visit. Adrenaline filled poker rooms are being replaced by thrill inducing indoor skydiving, heliyoga and diggers...yes, diggers. A typical trip to Las Vegas for many will include a quick freshen up on arrival then the short journey from your room to the in-house’ casino for a few hours of harmless gambling followed potentially by a dinner and a show at one of the countless hotels along the strip with such offerings. One area that is looking to return to its former glory is Downtown Las Vegas with the modernisation of the iconic Fremont Street. Now offering live entertainment on a daily basis along the street and a unique way to experience it, this is quickly becoming a hotspot for newcomers

The added bonus of delicious cocktails and endless viewing time will sway you away from the helicopter and once you reach the dizzying heights at which it is set, you will not be disappointed. This James Bond inspired establishment is sleek, suave and sophisticated with drinks to match and offers the perfect spot to watch the transition from day to night all the way down the strip.
With such an incredible variety of dining options, there really is something for everyone in this dazzling city, but some places stand proudly out from the crowd. Following a cocktail or two at Delano, why not continue the sophisticated affair with a trip to Mr. Chow at Caesars Palace. The strikingly simple design is based around a fluid ceiling sculpture that opens and closes at intervals throughout your meal adding a certain something to the dining experience. Not that the food and drink offering needs any help. Freshly prepared noodles are demonstrated for all to see, appreciate and applaud, whilst the champagne trolley provides a delectable selection of vintages and cuvées to enjoy. It is worth arriving a little before your dining time however as the equally sleek bar is worth a moment. You can of course enjoy one of their fantastic cocktails whilst you take it in.

Head north up the strip and set just off of the Las egas Blvd you will find egas Indoor Skydiving. Possibly not surprising, it is exactly what it sounds like. Once completing a brief safety session and changing into what can only be described as an oversized retro ‘onesie’, you enter in to a vertical wind tunnel which has a mesh in the centre to prevent anyone falling in to the fans below and comforting safety mats around the edge as a refuge from the air flow. When instructed to do so, you are then invited to throw yourself into the middle and are ‘caught’ in the air by the powerful thrust from the fans. If your confidence and ability allow, you will find yourself simply floating in mid-air able to rotate and change direction with the slightest of movements. An essential part to success is the unnerving ability to relax. As soon as you begin to tense your body, you will find that things go very badly wrong and are ushered to the safety of the surrounding mats by the instructor - who is always on hand to support you throughout the experience. This exhilarating activity is not for the faint hearted, but should be enjoyed by everyone. It is unlike anything else and will open

This newly opened lounge is the ideal destination for cocktail lovers and offers not only a delectible selection of drinks, but a relaxed and welcoming space just off the casino floor. Complete with a faux open fire which uses the illusion of light and steam to create a comforting corner to enjoy your drink, it is a fantastic space to enjoy either before or after dinner. Once you have had a chance to fully appreciate the meal and cocktails and recovered with a good nights sleep, you might want to take part in something with
a bit more action to get the endorphins flowing and your blood pumping. Despite having numerous branches open up in the UK, the US remains very much the home of Topgolf and it is easy to see why. Located by Tower Bridge and part of the D D group, Cantina del Ponte is hoping to change this with the introduction of their Prosecco and Pasta Brunch. Starting with a number of small plates or dishes from the fresh pasta counter, the brunch is colourful and everything a pasta lover could wish for. One dish is just 6.00, 3 for 15.00 or 5 for 23.50. A main course (starting at 18.50) can be ordered a la carte and the same goes for dessert (starting at 6.00). Bottomless Prosecco can be added for just 15.00 per person. A thoroughly enjoyable and lengthy affair you need it to be to make the most of all the pasta highlights of the small plates include 24 month cured Parma ham Frittata di Porri, leek and Parmesan frittata and Pesce spada affumicato, finocchi e rucola, Smoked swordfish, rocket, tomato and fennel. Bone Daddies James Street Located just a stone’s throw from Selfridges and St Christopher’s Place, Bone Daddies latest venue is a thriving hub of laughter, music and fantastic food. With two floors, one of which recreating the atmosphere of a bustling, urban Japanese marketplace with repurposed sake crates as stools, a 9-seater bar and overhead cage storage; and the other below that’s perfect for more intimate dining and larger groups; the vibrant restaurant is buzzy and cool without trying too hard at all. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and food is delivered
when it’s ready. Known for their big, hearty bowls of piping hot ramen - a must-try being their 20-hour pork bone broth Tonkotsu - Bone Daddies also specialises in an array of rice and Yaki Soba noodle dishes from the wok, as well as Kushiyaki skewers, which are exclusive to the branch. Fat, juicy and grilled to perfection on their robata grill, skewers include Ox Cheek, Prawns, Salmon and Chicken akitori. It’s well-worth trying some of the restaurant’s snacks too while you choose or if you’re just popping by for drinks. The Soft Shell Crab in particular comes with a deliciously warming green chilli ginger sauce; and the Sweet and Spicy Edamame is surprisingly unusual and moreish. Catering both to meat eaters and vegetarians alike, there is so much more to the menu than the ramen, which there is no denying you must have but just make sure you leave room for all the other tempting treats you are bound to fancy as soon as you see them being whisked through to other diners as you enter. Wash it all down with the wide and varied list of Japanese beers, ciders, sake and wine as well as Talented Mr Fox Cocktails. A must-visit and a great introduction to the chain if you haven’t been before.

Recharge at Chi Kitchen Acting as the perfect stop off to refuel whether you are hitting the shops or catching up with friends. Pan-Asian restaurant Chi itchen is centrally located on the ground floor of Debenhams on Oxford Street. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the 68-cover restaurant is warm and inviting thanks to the open plan design. The inspiration behind the design of the space was from the five elements fire, water, wood, earth and metal and has been brought to life using textures such as marble and leather to compliment the variety of the menu. Guests are invited to watch as the chefs freshly prepare a range of sushi, sashimi and charcoal grilled fare while enjoying a glass of wine or beer from the extensive drinks list. The word Chi means energy in Chinese, and the menu has been created by Group Consultant Chef and winner of MasterChef in 2014, Ping Coombes. Since being crowned the winner, Ping has embraced the chance to spread her knowledge, by promoting Asian food around the and abroad and Chi itchen is a great example of this. Much of the menu has been designed to share and features a range of dishes inspired and influenced from all around Asia. The sharing platters are a great place to start, offering something for
everyone. The popcorn shrimp is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes and is very good. The sushi is a must-try and is beautifully presented. From Spider Soft-Shell Crab to the Dragon Prawn Tempura, you’ll have trouble choosing just one portion but be warned portions are generous and you may find that your eyes are bigger than your stomach However, that’s ok, as the staff are incredibly friendly and will often allow you to take it away with you in a convenient carry bag. For those with more of an appetite then highlights from the larger plate selection include the delectable Sea Bass with chilli and lime and Malaysian sambal chilli prawns. A range of soups, salads, noodles (the Prawn Cha eow Teow is fantastic), rice and vegetables are also available to have on the side or alone. Many of the dishes come from the restaurant’s Robata Grill and are BBQ’d to perfection. Even better, Chi itchen launched a Laksa Bar last month. Laksa is a traditional Malaysian noodle dish served in a hot, steaming bowl of fragrant and spicy broth and the Chi itchen Laksa bar will offer traditional Malaysian laksa as well as Thai fusion laksa with a take on Tom um Soup. Once open, guests will be able to enjoy live cooking in front of the bar, whilst enjoying the tasty and warming noodles!

I’m often falsely accused by friends, with only a hazy idea of what I do, of destroying their local neighbourhoods by replacing their favourite local eateries with high street chains. Actually, they couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s true that in the suburbs and outside London, landlords often seek tenants with the biggest balance sheets which can (though not always) mean the blandest concepts, but in Central London, where I operate, everyone involved in the leasing process is hell bent on quality and a point of diff erence - working with the best operators from around the world. Food and Drink now defi nes a street or a building in a way that other uses cannot, a fact not lost on London’s landlords. In some cases, asking rents are even kept at an aff ordable level, specifi cally to attract the smaller, more interesting operators, less able to pay the market rent. This isn’t an act of charity - it can be good business sense because of the knock on eff ect on the surrounding area. It is this approach that I think has helped create so many restaurant hotspots in Central London. But of course everything hinges on

picking the right operator from the countless propositions out there. The chains are a safe bet but the independent sector can be daunting if you don’t know it. So, how do we spot a recipe for success? The fi rst thing many of my landlord clients look for is that special something that will set the restaurant apart from others. Most new concepts out there are trying to cash in on a trend and most new ideas often seem to have nothing to set them apart. But after a while, it’s easy to notice when something comes along that has that special hook. This might be found in the concept generally, the menu alone or the people involved. It’s not about uniqueness for the sake of it but it has to be clear how the restaurant will captivate the imaginations of the restaurant-going public. Sometimes, we take a gamble on a completely unproven operator but in most cases, we look for a track record. This doesn’t always have to be in the restaurant business - some of the best restaurants in London were started by people with a proven track record in other areas. What’s important is creative fl air and a good business head. There also has to be a good fi t. London’s neighbourhoods are so small and unique and the boundaries are constantly changing. After a while, you get to easily spot when a particular idea is a good fi t for the area at that particular moment in its evolution. It’s not always up to the landlord of course. When we are acting for tenants selling on their leases, then it’s all about getting the best possible price for the client. Josper and Wine at New Street Grill
Conveniently located between the City and Shoreditch, just across the road from Liverpool Street Station, New St Grill is a hidden gem. Part of the D D group, and set in a stunning historic 18th century warehouse that was originally used by the East India Company, the restaurant has been open since September 2012 and specialises in a wide selection of Josper-grilled steaks and meats, as well as fish each served with seasonal British produce and accompanied by a superior wine list with over 500 references. Making use of the adjoining Old Bengal Bar with it’s fantastic walled terrace area providing the ultimate city destination for alfresco drinks in the summer, New St Grill is modern and atmospheric with two warmly decorated dining rooms, featuring exposed brickwork, and magnificent arches. This rough-luxe interior approach is not only stylish and contemporary while also honouring the building’s past, but also makes for the perfect surrounds for the business clientele in the area. Service as you would expect is impeccable matching the sophisticated yet relaxed air of the dining rooms. Onto the food and Lawrence eogh has recently been appointed as executive head chef of Old Bengal Warehouse which also comprises of the other D D locations - Fish Market, and New Street Wine - that New St Grill shares the Warehouse with. The menu is large and varied featuring a good proportion of meat and fish dishes. To start the Seared Orkney scallops with pea puree
& devils on horseback is an excellent choice as is the Pan fried King Prawns, garlic and chilli. Steak tartare; Roast bone marrow; and for vegetarian’s Laverstoke Park Mozzerella; and Heritage roast, pickled and raw beetroot also feature. Those looking for some first-class cuts of meat will have no trouble choosing from the Josper Grill selection. It’s little surprise, since the clue is in the name that this is where the restaurant flourishes. With a wide array of steak cuts, sauces and lavish toppings such as Seared duck fois gras and Colston Basset Stilton, your choice is cooked to perfection and offered with a fantastic assortment of sides including Tru e chips Steamed or Creamed spinach Crispy Onion rings and Macaroni cheese. For those who don’t fancy meat but still want to try the Josper Grill, there is the Josper grilled whole Seabass Basque style; and those in the seafood mood in general will enjoy the delicious Dover Sole. Other menu highlights include Norfolk horn lamb chops with mint jus; and Fettuccine & porcini mushrooms. For dessert there is traditional British cheese, and the likes of Valrhona dark and white chocolate mousse or slightly more unusual and incredibly light the Pina Colada panna cotta. As mentioned before, New St Grill boasts an impressive wine selection and the sommelier is on hand to help you decide. We prefer to have dishes matched to the wines with each course, as after all with over 500 serves surely that’s the best way to try as many as you can while enjoying each dish.

Rivea London Inspired by the vibrant food markets of Italy and Provence, Rivea London launched its Sunday feasting menu in February offering French and Italian cuisine in a laid back and relaxed dining room which was designed by noted Italian architects. Situated within the Bulgari Hotel in nightsbridge, Executive Chef and prot g of Alain Ducasse (who is one of the most renowned chefs of his generation with over thirty years’ experience in the business and comes from the South west of France), Alexandre Nicholas has created a fabulous but simple menu focusing on creations using only the finest ingredients. Alexandre spent ten years in London and Paris being trained by Alain and they both have a passion for the Riviera’s healthy cuisine. The Sunday feasting menu offers a diversity of flavours and textures which all express the original taste of the Mediterranean diet. With technical expertise and attention to the finest detail, Alexandre has created a feast for the eyes and the palate. Incorporating the classic flavours and vivid colours of the Riviera, vegetables play a big part and although local produce is sourced wherever possible, specialist products such as cured meats and olive oil from Italy are all part of the experience. Comprising of two starters, one sharing course plus one dessert, it is indeed exactly as its name suggests and is perfect for enjoying with friends and family on a leisurely Sunday afternoon. The starter menu features several choices such as stone bass carpaccio
and pine nuts, grilled octopus, chickpeas and fennel or Provence-style vegetable caponata. Buffalo mozzarella with mushrooms and basil is also a delicious choice. The main sharing course to follow offers large sharing plates reminiscent of the family feast of Italy and Provence such as côte de boeuf with chunky potato fries, choron and basil sauce, roasted corn-fed chicken with lemon and thyme served with saut ed Camargue rice or leg of milk-fed lamb with baby vegetables and Navarin-style jus. There is also a Rivea salad wrapped in the restaurant’s signature socca sauce. For desserts, there is a special table set aside in the centre of the restaurant with a magnificent display of treats and guests are asked to help themselves. There is an excellent choice such as chocolate tart, Amalfi lemon meringue tart, Piedmont hazelnut choux and also cheesecake. Perfect if you have a sweet tooth! The wine list reflects the menu with a focus on wines from Provence, Corsica and the French and Italian Riviera as well as wine from the Rhône Valley. However, it also features up and coming small, artisanal producers as well as more famous wines and a selection of biodynamic and organic producers. Champagne or Prosecco The decline of market share for Champagne is undoubtedly linked to the insatiable appetite for Prosecco by both British society and millennials alike. I myself served Prosecco at my wedding a few years back and it went down a treat. So, is there a right or wrong answer I find myself asking In short no, we should feel free to enjoy what we like most; the perception of drinking Prosecco is no longer derogare just as the perception of Champagne is no longer the nectar of the elite. I wonder if we have gone too far and forgotten the real magic of great Champagne I for one am very happy with the emphatic rise of Prosecco as it has had a devastating effect on the Discount’ Champagnes we used to see flooding the market. ndoubtedly this has clouded our judgement of the Champagne region and it’s no wonder we have moved to the more consistent and better value Prosecco. It has also helped to focus the minds of the Grande Marquee houses, who now understand they must stand on their quality. I, like many of you I’m sure, have been caught up in the Prosecco boom over the past few years but recently a very generous friend shared with me a bottle of 1989 Bollinger Grande Annee and its was the catalyst to snap me out of my Prosecco slumber. This bottle caused me to reflect on the highlights of my tastings at
Harrods over the years and low and behold many of my fondest memories were accompanied by great aged bottles of Champagne. To my horror when I looked in my wine fridge at home I realised that I had forgotten to build up a collection of fine Champagne. So to rectify this I have looked at the market and selected my three favourites from the current releases in The Wine Room at Harrods that have already started their aging in my collection. First up has to be the 2005 Bollinger Grande Annee at 80, which is delicious now but it’s dying for a few years in the cellar to really develop those dried fruit and nutty aromas that deliver your taste buds to a whole new plain. Last up is the iconic 2004 Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill at 180, I’ve had more great bottles of this than any other icon champagne over the years, so it was a must for the Harrods portfolio. In Japan, the seasonal change is of such symbolic importance that the Japanese even have a word to describe the appreciation and enjoyment of the transient beauty of cherry blossoms - Hanami. Continental GT Speed Black Edition Power, presence and speed have been synonymous with the Bentley name since its motorsport beginning, and now, the British marque is pushing the bounds even further. The latest iteration of the Continental GT Speed offers up the fastest production vehicle the brand has ever created topping out at a staggering 206 mph. However, that’s not all the update delivers. Alongside the release, Bentley have also launched the striking ‘Black Edition’ available in both coupe and convertible guise. Featuring unique additions to the already impressive styling and design cues of the standard model, Bentley have opened the door for customers to create instantly recognisable and stunning versions.
Squeezing even more power and torque from the iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine, the Bentley engineers have managed to increase the power output from 635 PS to 642 and add 20 Nm of torque to the already impressive figure pushing it to a staggering 840 Nm. What makes this even more impressive is the availability throughout the entire rev range thanks to careful reoptimisation of boost control, raising the Grand Tourer’s renowned “torque plateau” of continuous maximum torque delivery from 2,000-5,000 rpm, and bringing even greater acceleration performance. As a result, the 0-60 mph sprint time has dropped under the 4 second mark to just 3.9 seconds.

The interior space is one of the Bentley Continental’s standout features and it is easy to understand why. Adorned with leather and carbon fibre at every turn, this is the perfect balance between luxury, comfort and sporting prowess. All three facets are expertly combined to create a seamless interior that evokes power and prestige. Quilted leather seats paired with the heating, ventilating and massage options are nothing shy of heaven and offer a sanctuary for driver and passenger alike to enjoy the subtle refinement that this powerful monster possesses. It won’t last too long however, as you will soon remember what it sounds like with the roof down as you plant your right foot firmly on the floor. It does bring in to question the necessity for those extra few miles per hour top speed and milliseconds of 0-60 mph time in comparison to the vastly more efficient 8 counterparts, but there is no denying that this is a remarkable feat of engineering and one that Bentley appear to be determined on improving year after year. The Black Edition simply offers those with an understanding of this cars fundamental purpose an opportunity to make everyone else around them aware too, so next time you spot a Continental at the lights with a flash of colour appearing from below, simply nod in appreciation of the efforts put in to crafting such a marvelous creation. Maybe give a nod for the driver too as the wait at the lights won’t be helping his or her bank balance.
The ride continues to offer a firm, smooth and consistent feel thanks to the adaptive suspension. Shift to a stiffer setting to take full advantage of its cornering ability or drop it to the most comfortable for one of the smoothest rides on the road. Considering the weight, it is always staggering the level of control this car maintains through cornering at higher speeds which is all thanks to the impressive systems at work under the body. Four-link double wishbone at the front and trapezoidal multi-link at the rear combined with anti-roll bars and self-leveling air suspension make for an impressive system indeed. Speed sensitive steering provides a secure feel through acceleration but doesn’t detract too much from the feel of the car on the road and the permanent all-wheel drive system ensures continued grip regardless of the conditions. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com It is so easy to get swept up in in the bright summer displays in garden centres and nurseries and tempting to plant impulse purchases in difficult and challenging spaces. I was always taught the right plant in the right place, although hope over experience can get you far, with conditions such as those of a shady border it is much wiser to select your plants with planning and care. A shady border need never be dull. Texture is the key to adding interest, but before we consider plants we should evaluate the aspect. There is shade gentle and dappled with shafts of bright light at different times of the day as the sun moves across the sky and then there is shade dry, dark, dense and unforgiving. Needless to say if you have the conditions of the latter then that is rather unfortunate and establishing any planting will be a labour of love. The former, though it too has its challenges is far simpler to achieve and is perhaps the level of shade many of us have in our gardens. Most often shady gardens are shady because of overhead tree cover and so not only are they shady but dry too. Preparing your ground is vital for any new scheme but especially so with a shady border. Well rotted organic matter, pH appropriate to your site
should be incorporated in and around the generous planting hole (twice the size of the pot at least) and prior to planting deluge two or three full two gallon watering cans of water into each hole before you put the plant in to soak the surrounding earth. Let the water drain away and then place the plant in the hole, backfill with the original soil mixed with new organic matter, top soil, fertiliser and compost and then a final water and a mulch over the top to prevent water loss through transpiration are all well worth the effort. While the plants are young watering will be vital throughout the drier months. If you have an overhead canopy of evergreen trees then you may need to water even in wet weather as the canopy will shade out the ground underneath and the rain my never get through in sufficient quantities. It is tempting to buy larger specimen plants to start a scheme for instant impact and gratification but in shady spaces starting small (2-3L) is more likely to produce better and quicker results than planting a mature shrub. Smaller plants establish better and will attune themselves to the location and conditions much more easily. The colours that work best in the shade are not surprisingly

whites, pale blues and pinks. These light shades help to brighten a dull space and work well against the foliage shades of dark green supplied by most shade loving shrubs. ellow is also a good colour for early or late in the season and always works well with blues and purples. Some plants to consider for a successful partly shady border: Sarcococca vars. | Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Soft Caress’ | Dicksonia antarctica | Ferns | Euphorbia amydaloides var. robbiae | Anemone blanda | Convallaria majalis These are of course only a few of the plants that will grow happily in shade but there are many, many more. In order for your shady area to be successful the key is in the preparation and research. Prepare your ground well and chose plants that the Royal Horticultural Society’s A- of Garden Plants states as shade tolerant or for a more contemporary approach, websites such as www.crocus.co.uk and www. shootgardening are extremely informative and provide excellent advice. Taking the time to plan your border and planting appropriate plants means that a once difficult space could be transformed into a colourful border that provides interest throughout the seasons.

When was the local market hottest? The residential property market is very much the same as other industries, in that it’s susceptible to popular periods and quieter moments. The primary driving factor is almost always the economy, which affects buyers' and sellers’ movements. Sellers stand to gain more from a popular market with plenty of demand, while buyers prosper when it slows down and affords them more opportunity to negotiate on the price. All this talk of ‘boom periods’ and ‘hot markets’ got me thinking about when the last time the E14 property market was at its peak, and if it’s due another hot streak in the near future. New stamp duty charges on second homes, the EU referendum and tax changes for landlords are reasons many 'experts' are claiming the property market is in crisis. Since these announcements were implemented, property prices across England and Wales have actually risen by 3.4 per cent, and sales rates haven't shown any worrying signs of cooling. The market may not be exhibiting the frothy transaction levels which preceded the 2008 credit crunch, but that's because the market is underpinned by a more 'normal' supply and demand dynamic. Looking at the year-on-year prices changes for the local property market over the last five years, I can see that prices saw a rise of 1.3 per cent in 2012 from the previous 12 months.
Prices increased by 3.6 per cent in 2013, 10.5 per cent in 2014, 4.1 per cent in 2015, and 11.1 per cent in 2016. Over this period, the 'hottest' time for the property market locally was 2016. It’s not rocket science that sellers and buyers will seek the best deal they can get, with the agent acting as the middle person and giving the best possible advice. Buyers have more bargaining power in a slower market
market. Buy-to-let landlords with investments will stand to benefit more when the sales market stagnates, which often indicates a greater number of people looking for rental properties. Even though the property market enjoys some periods which are ‘hotter’ than others, it is still very much a year-round industry. This is certainly the case in E14, where

because they can use inactivity as a reason for bringing the price down. Sellers are in their strongest position when the market is buoyant and they can use demand to drive up the price. Over the last five years, buyers would have found the best value in the market in 2012, while sellers would have benefited in 2016. The rental market goes through similar peaks and dips to the sales

Occupancy is a useful indicator for demand, as well as illustrating how spacious or cosy properties are in the local area. In E14, 35.8 per cent of properties have no extra rooms and 23.4 per cent have one too few rooms.
Promising sales levels in E14 The weather may still be warming up outside, but it's already a hot time of year for the property market. The expected uptick in sales has materialised as you can see from the chart. Particularly notable are sales levels o ats, which have increased 78.7 per cent since the last quarter of 2015.
