YORK LIFE
Happy Octoboo! It literally feels like five minutes ago that we were complaining about the heat, and now there are fallen leaves at our feet and Halloween costumes in the shops. What happened? Time flies, as they say. But so do birds, planes, and helicopters. Not sure what our point is there. Oh yeah, it’s October! If you cast from your mind the fact that it has gotten chillier, wetter, and darker, you’ll remember about all the magic of autumn. It’s the time of year for wrapping up in scarves and gloves and strolling along the river, for drinking over-priced hot chocolates in parks, and, at the end of the month, for dressing your children up as ghouls and marching them around the neighbourhood begging for free sweets (which you will help them eat, obviously). To help keep your (admittedly
shorter) days packed with fun, we’ve got a bustling events section toward the bag of the mag, filled with fun autumnal things to do. The highlight has to be the reopening of York Maze for half term, complete with their guttwistingly terrifying Hallow-scream nights. But for those of you with slightly more delicate sensibilities, why not tackle our new Treasure Hunt around the Minster – with not a single mention of the Minster? So time is indeed flying by... when you’re having fun. Maybe that is why the recent months have shot by like a bullet from a gun being fired by Superman travelling at light speed; because we’ve had so much fun churning out your favourite monthly magazine for you. No need to thank us, we just love the warm feeling we get. BECAUSE IT’S FREEZING OUT! SARAH

A WEEK AT YORK MAKER HUB!
If your child is a tinkerer and always dismantling their toys and gadgets to see how they work, they need to get to York Maker Hub. Encouraging kids to get into technology and computer programming is what York Maker Hub is all about, and if you've ever read about the bank balance of the likes of Bill Gates, who learned to programme computers as a child, you can't blame 'em. Kids will learn fun programming techniques and get to create their own marvellous inventions – all under the watchful eyes of the expert tutors. Find out more at www. yorkmakerhub.com
If you're looking for something for the kids to do this Halloween that isn't the same boring old trick-or-treat, we have just the thing. On the 31st October Creepy Crawlies, off Wigginton Road, are throwing open their doors for a Spooktacular Halloween Party, filled with plenty of fun and games... and a few frights to boot! As well as running amok throughout the huge climbing frame, party-goers will also enjoy some tasty food, all taking place from 6 till 8pm. Find out more at www.webadventurepark.co.uk
If your idea of a perfect bonfire night is to watch your neighbour’s firework display from behind your row of conifers, convincing the kids that this is as good as it gets, try again. Dunnington Bonfire knows how to handle a spectacular 5th of November, combining a huge bonfire, an impressive fireworks display, and live music and entertainment. Taking place in Eastfield Showfield in Dunnington, the night will also feature ‘Quiet Fireworks’ before the main event. Find out more at www.dunningtonfayre.org.uk
We have a family ticket for the party up for grabs, allowing entry for a family of four. All you have to do for a chance of winning is answer this question:
We have four family passes to give away for the night, going off with a literal bang on 5th November! For a chance of winning, simply answer this easy question:

CLUB LOOKING FOR A STEAMY TIME? No, not like that (but we’ll chat later); we mean in a place with plenty of real steam. If you’re keen to get involved with a local organisation, you could do a lot worse than rolling over to the National Railway Museum. This month they are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join them the for their Future Engineers events and inspire the next generation of makers and tinkerers. If you would like to give over some of your precious time to helping the free-entry museum keep the visitors enthralled and entertained, call 685737or email volunteer.nrm@nrm.org.uk
FELINE GENEROUS? Favourite animal ever? Yes, dragons are majestic, but tend not to need our help all that much. Cats, however, do; and fortunately they have the Cats Protection charity to look after them. Not long opened in Haxby, the charity’s latest shop is in need itself, requiring dedicated cat-loving volunteers to help out. Be it preparing the donated items to sell, dealing with customers, or getting things in order behind the scenes, if you care about cats, drop them a line today. n To find more about the opportunities, email Haxby.ShopManager@cats.org.uk

HEY PRESTO! Does your little one have something of a magical flare? Are you constantly finding unending lengths of handkerchiefs lying about the house, or are white doves mysteriously appearing in your hats? If so, perhaps it’s time to find them some expert tutoring to hone their skills. The York Young Magicians, organised by the York Society of Magicians, meets once a month at The Cross Keys, Tadcaster Road, to teach ticks, share magical secrets, and host lectures and demonstrations. n If your ten to 16 year old would like to learn the magical arts (and have tones of fun!), email p.woollons@btinternet.com
NEW FRIENDS INCOMING! Ladies of York, are you looking for a way to socialise and make new friends? If so, and if you’d like to start giving something back to your local community, you should join your area’s Townswomen Guild Group. There are three afternoon guilds in York: in Acomb, York Central, and also in Dringhouses. All three are eager to offer new members a warm and friendly welcome, and invite them along to their monthly meetings. Join, and in no time at all you’ll be enjoying listening to interesting guest speakers, supporting local good causes, going out to lunches, and going on exciting outings. n For more information, call Jo on 798694 or email js5645@yahoo.co.uk

Some improvement in your levels of financial security open the door to finding a far greater degree of emotional security, and there are many occasions over the next three or four weeks when business and pleasure mix quite beautifully. There is a subtle travel energy which suggests weekends away rather than intercontinental vacations, and in its own way, this enhances the romantic
(and sexual) vibration. The 19th is a date to remember, because it is strongly connected with new love affairs… There is a great vibrancy here, not just for young lovers, but for old lovers getting their act together a little later in their lives. And you know what they say… Better late than never!

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV-21ST DEC
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN
AQUARIUS 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB
A mixture of moods! A desire for more freedom, with some anger and resentment directed towards anything (and anyone) who holds you back and ties you down. Career girls consider becoming housewives, housewives think of Shirley Valentine, guys who are on PAYE want to become self employed… etc., et al.
Not for the first time this year, a decision will be taken out of your hands, and while this is annoying, it could also be something of a relief. It’s a good month for gentlemen who want a bit more influence over their own lives, also for self-employed guys who don’t mind putting in the hours to gain the rewards.
You’ll need a cool head and a calm mind to stay on top of what promises to be an extremely busy and exciting month. There are lots of changes on the work scene, some more cash coming in, and also quite a lot more responsibility. Partners back you up all the way, but there still won’t be enough hours in the day to get things done.
This latter third of the year will, in some ways, be the most rewarding, but in other ways, it is also the most frustrating. You spend too much time doing what you’ve got to do, which does not allow enough time for you to do what you want to do. Nevertheless, children prosper and parents find some extra cash.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR You must learn by your mistakes and not throw good money after bad.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR October is a month in which you’ll get something you’ve wanted for a long time – the question is, will it make you as happy as you thought it would, or are there still more ambitions to be fulfilled? You will be keeping a keen eye on finances in what will be an expensive month, but there is lots of love on offer from partners.
TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST MAY A high workload this month, and lots of enthusiasm to get things done. Some adjustment needed in the conduct of a relationship, and you’ll be washing your hands of, and walking away from, anything with red tape attached to it. Your principles may be in conflict with a few practical necessities – so be practical!
GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN
A “building bridges” month in affairs of the heart, and this is not a good time to be impatient. There is some confusion with regard to priorities during the first couple of weeks, but during the latter half of the month a
romantic/emotional relationship is uppermost in your heart and mind – which is exactly as it should be.
CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL You’ll get thoroughly fed up when someone tells you “you can’t do this, and you can’t do that”, and you’ll be provoked into doing something drastic to put them in their place and prove them wrong. There is a positive mood of spontaneity in the wind, and although you may ruffle a few feathers, there is fun to be had
LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG A great month for romantic relationships, but there is some envy and jealousy in the wind, and a long term friendship with someone of the same sex may now have to end. They want something (or someone?) you’ve got – and they can’t have it! Therefore celebrate the love in your life – but watch your back.

YORK LIFE
and life in general
AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
As my friends will testify, I am generally not the most organised of people. In fact, they would probably put it less kindly than that. Emails go unread, letters go unopened, I unearth cheques a year after I was sent them, then wonder why the bank won’t accept them. However, there is one way in which I am quite the reverse of disorganised. And that is when it comes to getting to places on time. Then I am spectacularly, wonderfully well organised. Train leaves at 8.30? Then I will be at the station at 7.30, worrying about having only an hour to kill in WHSmith. My children, though, don’t share this desire to be on time. Which makes going out with them something of a challenge.
lunchtime. So far, so good. Or is it? Tea time rolls around, and nobody appears. We have to be there in three hours’ time. It can take them that long to put their shoes on. I drag myself upstairs. The sweet sound of YouTube greets me.
I repeat the information again at

“Get a move on!” I flap, ushering them down Bootham.
They look at me as if I were mad. Where is the Valium?
“I am getting a move on,” says the Tween, staring at her phone.
FIFTEEN MINUTES TO GO. Cutting it fine. “You need to put your shoes on.”
“I thought you wanted a dog? You’d need to walk faster than that if you had a dog. It starts in half an hour!”
The Teen looks up.
“Actually 50 minutes,” puts in the Teen.
“Where are my shoes?” Deep breath. “They should be on the shoe-rack.” “They aren’t.”
“Well, half an hour, 50 minutes what’s the difference? We just need to get there today, not tomorrow!” And so we make our happy family way to the Theatre Royal.
“Are you getting ready?” I ask the Tweenager.
“Well, you need to look for them.”
“I’m watching Thatcher Joe,” she says. As if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“I still can’t find my shoes.”
We arrive half an hour early. Perfect timing.
My saintly patience is being tested to the limit.
“We’re going out at 6.30,” I remind her.
“I said we’d be early,” grumbles the Tween.
“Where did you take them off?”
“We’re only a bit early,” I say brightly. I am starting to feel better. “And it’s much nicer not to be in a rush, isn’t it?”
“That’s not for ages.” I breathe deeply and try the Teenager. “I’m getting ready,” he shouts through the door.
TEN MINUTES TO GO.
“I don’t know.” I look on the shoe rack. “They are on the shoe rack.” FIVE MINUTES TO GO. The Tween emerges. “I need to ring Lucy.”
And so it was with trepidation that I booked tickets for The Witches at the Theatre Royal. Going to the theatre means all three of us being ready on time (or, preferably, several hours early). Planning for this event starts with a coffee-time reminder that we are going to the theatre in several hours’ time. I repeat the information once they have removed their ear-phones.
“You will need to be ready soon,” I say. “Completely ready.”
“You can do that while we are walking.” “I can’t talk and walk.”
I can clearly hear the sound of his X-Box controller. It doesn’t sound much like “getting ready” to me. With only an hour to go, I issue a warning.

They both give me The Look. They can give me The Look all they like: Mother is Always Right. Relieved, I go to the Box Office to collect the tickets. I give my name and the girl searches through the tickets.
“Well, you will have to.”
“I can’t find them,” she says. “Do you have your email confirmation?”
She gives me The Look. “And why do we always have to be early, anyway?”
Do I have my email confirmation? I have spent the entire day staring at it.
Early? We will be lucky to get there at all.
I hand it over.
Ten minutes late, we finally leave the house.
“I’m sorry,” she says. “Your booking is for tomorrow.” Maybe I deserve The Look after all.

This little camera gadget sits on top of your TV or computer monitor and turns them into video communicators – like they have in the future! THE NODPOD. Ever been on a plane, train, or a passenger in a car and fancied a kip? The thing about seats is that they aren’t beds, no matter what awkward position you squeeze yourself into. The NodPod might help, although lets be honest here – you will look like a prat using it. The NodPod is a hammock for your face, allowing your head to loll around while you sleep. Yes, a hammock. For your face. Despite the noose-like appearance the creators assure everyone that it is totally safe, and it amassed a huge following while being crowd-funded recently. Dear
Daphne Got Got a problem? a problem?
OF COURSE YOUYOU HAVE. OF COURSE HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out. soon sort you out.
I HATE MY PARTNERS COOKING
Daphne, My long term boyfriend does all of the cooking, it’s his thing and he loves doing it. The only problem is that most of it tastes absolutely rank and I don’t know how to tell him. I don’t profess to be a master chef but I can cook some decent dishes – help me approach this one without hurting his feelings. Ungrateful girlfriend, Elvington
I’m sorry I have to say it in this day and age: but great, your boyfriend likes to cook – this is a good and rare thing for many people. Obviously when we hear this we don’t question the skills behind the cooking. Don’t tell him he’s a rubbish cook! Maybe try explaining that you also love cooking and it would be great if you could have a go sometimes or even do it together. Maybe that way you can make the dishes taste a little better without hurting anyone’s feelings.

I’ve been in an on/off relationship for several years now with someone who I love very much. The problem is SHE’S whenever we get back together and things are going ok, she shuts me out, lies about where she is and refuses to MESSING ME answer my texts and calls. We break up, I start to heal AROUND and before I know it she’s back, madly in love with me and wanting us to get back together. I know that this is unacceptable but I keep on hoping that this will be the last time and we will make it through next time. Anon, Tadcaster Road Leave her. If this has been going on for several years then it’s unlikely to stop. When you break up with someone you tend to see them through rose tinted glasses because we don’t like the idea of missing out on anything, even if that something is literally the worst. She can’t keep on playing around with your feelings like this and the lying should be sending massive warning signs. I don’t think this relationship is destined to go anywhere which must be horrible for you to hear but somebody needs to tell you before you waste anymore of your life in this rubbish recurring situation. Do you talk about the patterns in your relationship? If you can’t bear the thought of ending it then you’re going to have to address her behaviour first hand – does she even know why she behaves like this with you? Good luck and be strong!
Daphne, I hate Halloween. I hate the concept of my little one’s going round to other people’s houses begging for sweets. They’re now getting to the TRICK age where friends have invited them to go trick or OR TREAT? treating. I don’t want them to do it. I think it’s a complete non tradition brought over from America to sell more sweets. For the past few years we’ve tried to make sure we’re out doing something that night or sat upstairs watching a film but I feel like I’m running out of options. How do I get out of it? Scary mum, Haxby
YORK LIFE
Scary mum, you face a dilemma here; do you ostracise your kids from what all of the others are doing, or embrace the non-tradition and go out and get lots of free sweets. We have a rule in our village where kids only knock on doors that have decorated for Halloween and only until 8pm. Maybe this would be a good compromise for you? Ask your children if they want to even go trick or treating, you may be pleasantly surprised. Personally I don’t know many kids who would turn down dressing up and getting free sweets though. Honesty has been said to be the best policy, therefore you could always turn off all the lights in the house, hide upstairs and tell your kids that Halloween is off this year because it’s glorified begging and you don’t personally agree with it – very cool parent of you… love it.
Dear Daphne, I love my son to bits, but he’s costing me a fortune. He’s now 21, still lives at home and flits in and out of jobs when he can be bothered, and SPONGING regularly asks to borrow money off me. He has no SON plans to go into meaningful employment and when I approach the subject with him he explains angrily that he needs to enjoy his youth and will worry about all that stuff later. I don’t know how to make him see sense without upsetting him. We’ve had so many rows about it already. Skint mum, Acomb Argh Skint Mum, what a nightmare! It sounds like you’ve got a stereotypical ungrateful child. First things first, cut off his money – he gets nothing unless he works for it. If you’re struggling financially it’s not fair for him to keep on sponging off of you. Explain that you don’t have a lot of money and if he wants to live at home he needs to start contributing. It’s a big bad world out there and no land lord this side of the solar system will take pity on his ambitions to ‘enjoy his youth’. It sounds like you’ve tried the chat, so it’s now time to take action. Don’t give him anything and stick to it. He won’t go hungry if there’s food in the fridge. When he does get a job make sure you’re super positive about it to try and encourage him towards the world of work and when he leaves another job make sure he knows you’re aware of the pattern that’s emerging. Good luck with this one – it sounds like you’ve really got your work cut out.

At the Halloween ball every witch or wizard brought at least one black cat. The organisers wanted to know how many cats, witches and wizards went to the ball. The only record was a group photo taken as the photographer fell over catching only paws and feet. The other group photo was taken by a ghost at midnight and only showed eyes glowing in the dark. If the photographer counted 196 feet and paws and the ghost tallied 126 eyes, how many wizards and how many black cats were at the Ball?
WORDSEARCH
Answer:126 eyes = 63 individuals. If all these were wizards, there would be 126 legs. We have 70 legs extra or 35 pairs, which means there must be 35 cats and there must be 63-35=28 wizards. Cats=35 and Wizards=28

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: COUNTY HOUSE, MONKGATE It is safe to say that York in the past was not a safe place. Cramped streets and drains that flowed directly into the Ouse (the city's main source of water) meant that disease was rife. In fact, Seebhom Rowntree's 19th century survey of York found that one in four babies died within a year of being born. Although York had, since the Norman conquest, been a 'hospital city' with the huge St. Leonard's Hospital on the site of the modern Theatre Royal, that was essentially a hospice where sick people's souls were tended to by monks prior to dying. Which is no use when fighting off cholera. It wasn't until 1740 that York had a proper medical hospital, located in a rented house on Monkgate. In the first five years these small rooms saw 2500 patients be treated, but the growing need for (and public trust in)
WAR
medical care meant a new and bigger home was needed. In 1745 a purpose built hospital was constructed next door boasting 50 beds. It was situated exactly where the road entrance to County House is today.
RISKY BUSINESS Despite having purpose-built facilities and plenty of space to deal with York's sick (but not the poor, mind), the County Hospital was essentially a charity, funded by donations from wealthy philanthropists. Because of this the hospital was at constant risk of closure, and because of the still less than scientific approach to hygiene, mortally rates were high. So high in fact, that it gave the artist George Stubbs a wonderful opportunity to study human anatomy. Know what we mean?
MEMORIALS
As the industrial revolution kicked off and the railways came to York, the demands on the small hospital reached breaking point. And so the corporation of the city decided to build a much larger facility just behind the existing building. That structure, started in 1840, is that which still stands today – albeit divided up into apartments with Minster (or, on the other side, Sainsbury's) views. The original hospital was pulled down in 1851 once the new building was up and running, which is the reason County House today enjoys a grand position set back from Monkgate.
The York County Hospital became THE hospital for the city and surrounding areas. However, it continued to be funded in very strange and haphazard ways. It remained a charity, and relied heavily on donations and public subscriptions, but it also started charging for some medical treatments, as well as excepting payments from insurance schemes. These were the days prior to the formation of the NHS when your wealth very much influenced your health. In 1914 the hospital answered the military's call by allocating 50 beds for the treatment of injured soldiers returning from the front line of World War One. As the conflict continued to rage, further hutment wards were built where Sainsbury's and the car park now stand, to treat the growing

Following the war the new wards were still used to treat those injured in combat, including those suffering from shell shock (even though diagnosing a British soldier as having the purely psychological condition of shell shock was illegal, right up until the Second World War!).
NASH-NUL 'ELF The formation of the National Health Service in 1948 change much at
County Hospital. Now the staff were all full-time employed and treatments were free for all. As well as the grand old Victorian building, and the hutments behind it, a new ante natal ward was built right on Monkgate. Here the hospital remained until yet another surge in demand and space prompted the construction of the current York Hospital on Wigginton Road.

number of injured serviceman. Demand on the hospital's resources was so intense, and the costs grew so high, that a public appeal was started to help fund the soldier's treatments. A list of donated items, today held by the Borthwick Institute, includes the likes of apples, vegetables, chairs, Christmas decorations, postcards, and tickets to the opera. Bless 'em.
By 1976 all treatments were being carried out at the new 600-bed facility, although ante-natal services continued at Monkgate until 1980. In 1981 most of the site was completely cleared, including many of the older houses around it. Think of County House today and it is completely surrounded by modern buildings, retail units, and a beautiful car park (which disturbed the graves of more than 500 of the the medieval city's Jewish population – which we covered here a few months back). So as lovely as County House looks today, with some great views over the city from the top-floor apartments, consider this; how many people have died there? Just saying...

YORK LIFE Krystal finally got to throw a pot. Hopefully now she’ll stop talking about it. Last month I was on a quest to find a fulfilling hobby; this month I have returned having actually had a go at throwing a pot at York College. SPOLER ALERT: It was amazing, I loved it and mum is getting three pots for Christmas. Ever since the re-opening of York Art Gallery with CoCA (Centre of Ceramic Art), I’ve day dreamed of running away to the countryside to pursue my love of all things ceramic. So when Course Leader of Contemporary Craft, Ed Poxon from York College, got in touch to say I could have a whirl, I delightedly jumped up out of my seat, told Link they could shove my job because I was off to run away, and make breath taking pottery until the end of my time. Just kidding. I’ll be honest with you, it’s harder than it looks – I broke two pots on the wheel but luckily Ed kept a watch over me to save the vast majority. York College have some seriously talented ex students who have gone on to achieve great things after the Art degree courses. Craft graduate, Beccy Ridsdel, who runs the evening pottery

class, currently has exhibitions in New York and Texas; she’s literally an international artist… pretty cool right? Ceramic graduate Jill Ford went onto achieve great things, she’s exhibiting all over the UK this year and has had work featured on 60 Minute Makeover before too. Both artists will be Exhibiting at the Arts Market at York Racecourse from September 30th until October 2nd alongside current degree students. This event comes four weeks after Ceramic Art York, where talented potters have come from far and wide to display their wares in the beautiful Museum Gardens. For those who need access to beautiful ceramics every day of the week, York Art Gallery is home to CoCA – it was love at first sight when I saw Claire Twomeys Manifest: 10,000 Hours. The impressive display of 10,000 pots is breath taking, and was actually made partly by York College students under Claire's guidance. York feels like the place to be for ceramic lovers right now and I think as a city we're going to be on the international map for ceramic art some time
soon. Yes, this is a shameless plug for York College cos it was absolutely fab! If you think a love of all things ceramic or arty could be on the horizon for you, take a look at what York College has to offer: For 16-18 year olds there are three A & AS level options, as well as vocational courses including the Extended Diploma Level 3 in 3D Design Crafts. Higher education courses include BA(Hons) Contemporary Craft, BA(Hons) Fashion Design and Production and BA(Hons) Graphic Arts. Out & About
INTERVIEW: JOE DONOVAN FROM BLOSSOMS Indie five piece, Blossoms’ debut album went straight to the top of the UK charts and stayed there for two weeks in August. So when I got the call at Leeds Fest to have a chat with drummer Joe Donovan, I could’ve died with excitement. Joe speaks with a heart warming Mancunian accent and was just as excited about the top spot as Blossoms’ loyal fans have been: “Obviously we were over the moon like, and especially getting it to number one for two weeks we were really buzzing.” But it wasn’t something the band had anticipated: “It’s not something, we really like concentrated on as a band. Which I know it sounds really ridiculous but, because we’ve been sat on it so long and we were so proud of it, it was one of those things
where it was like: we’ve done the best we can, so let’s see where it goes.” Prior to their fame, Blossom’s have graced the streets of York a time or two when they played gigs at Fibbers. So get this, just like many of York’s indie loving dwellers, Joe loves Fibbers, especially Tim Hornsby, who books all of the bands: “I love York Fibbers: the guy at York Fibbers, he gives us fajitas. Last time we went in there he had a cake. Tim, he’s so sound. “Dy’a know when you’re doing the – it’s called a toilet tour - when there’s a few venues you get to and it’s like no one’s bothered about you, like another band in and out. But when you go there, you’re actually treated well. He’s a bit of a gem with new emerging bands. “Any bands who’ve got that on their tour should definitely be looking forward to it. Cos it’s just brilliant. Even a few big bands always go back to fibbers, maybe one day we’ll do the same,” Joe adds. To find out what else Joe had to say visit www.yourlocallink.co.uk – the rest of the interview will be online.

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp
If you’re just a nice guy - you don’t let people walk on you - but if you’re just a nice guy and treat people right, good things happen. Bill Engvall
M O D E R N MA RKE TING F OR BUSY BUSINESSE S Do your customers hate marketing? Most people groan at the thought of marketing. No-one wants to be sold to. No-one wants the new upgraded toothpaste, to feel less attractive compared to a Photoshopped impossibody, or to choose from 300 different bags of coffee. But marketing is a massive force for good because ... here's what marketing is: 1) finding a problem, 2) organising yourself to solve it. That's it. Look around. See anything that needs improving? A zillion things, right? I'll join you in hating BAD marketing. Marketing that tricks or annoys or does damage. We won't be doing any of that in this column. Modern marketing requires trust. Did you see Minority Report? The futuristic ideas in that film were reputed to be well researched, and as I remember it (although my memory's
not great) at one point Tom Cruise strode past a video wall and it told him he needed new underpants. I may have that wrong. Don't write in. The idea is that soon pretty much every product will contain an identification transmitter. In this nearfuture world when Cruise walks into the shop a few years after buying his underpant/transmitter combo, the shop's sensors spot he's wearing them and the screen delivers a marketing message that says "nice to see you Tom, undies are this way --> ". Many people see this sort of creepy, stalky marketing as a bad thing. I get that, but it could be worse. Remember the Shake 'n' Vac woman. Yeah you do. You do the Shake ‘n’ Vac and put the freshness back. Do the Shake ‘n’ Vac and put the freshness back. Remember? Now you're ready to kill. See? Life is much better if marketing tells you about things you like. If it solves your problems
and doesn't interrupt unless it's got something you really want. So how can we help, not irritate? Way before the Internet, business guru Tom Peters said that all products are information products. Let's choose one at random using www.randomamazonproduct.com ... I got a remote wifi pet cam with laser so you can drive your kitty kat nuts even when you're out of the house. The problem is kitty kat depression, this product is a possible solution. Now, I'm not suggesting anyone should write a half-hearted cat depression blog. You would need to write the best cat depression blog in the world. I'd want to see a cat depression song in the charts! The thing about providing really useful answers to people with questions is it triggers a bit of psychology called reciprocation which, summarised, says if you really help people, they'll buy your stuff. Which is great news for nice marketers.
So todays' suggested marketing strategy is: find your customers' biggest problem, solve it, be nice. (In future columns we'll explore easy ways for you to use content marketing to make your business more manageable and more rewarding to run. See you next time.) John Allsopp is a freelance marketer. He was a PR guy from 1981 until 2000 when he went to Scarborough campus and got a first class degree in Internet Computing. He built websites until online marketing became a thing. Nowadays he offers marketing director services to companies who are not ready to employ someone full time and he offers content marketing services (SEO, social media, traffic generation, PR), websites that work and general marketing advice and help through surgemarketing. co.uk john@ johnallsopp. co.uk 01723 376477

THE WATCH WALLET. Hey, hotshot! We bet you have a wallet bursting at the seams with cash and cards, right? Well there is another wallet that every international jet-setter requires... one to carry his or her watches. Yes, The Watch Wallet from USbased Discommon Goods is an Italian leather wallet with Tweed interior designed for carrying watches. You know, because when you go on business trips you carry two spare watches. It wouldn't do to have one that 'didn't go' with a killer outfit. And before you think this is all a bit unnecessary, wait... because there is also room for your passport. Phew. And look, it's but $380 from www.discommon.com

SPORT REPORT with Dan Tait Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.
It never ceases to amaze me how quick football changes.
This column has changed tact numerous times over the past few weeks depending on whether York City have played at Home or Away. Having not been away from home since my daughter was born a couple of years ago (bit harder to justify Torquay away to the wife, now) I managed two away games in a week recently. Unfortunately the reward was a 6-1 defeat at Gateshead and the equally galling 2-1 loss at Forest Green (with the 2nd being a dubious penalty in the fifth minute of injury time). I can always judge how good the experience was based on my highlight from the game; basically whether it is football related or not. Of course Richard Brodie’s stunning strike into the top corner was special, but observing a supporter’s reaction to Forest Green’s vegan friendly menu was at least more comical than City’s defending at Gateshead. One lad seemed to think the Q-Pie just meant he had to stand in a long line for his usual steak and kidney offering, yet looked like he had bit into barbed wire rather than the quorn he was indulging in.
Moving on... Thankfully, York City have swept aside many of the part-time outfits at Bootham Crescent to at least show potential in moving forward (we couldn’t even do that the first time we went down to the non-league), so perhaps there can be some optimism ahead of the visits of Aldershot (Saturday October 1st), Chester (Saturday 22nd), and Sutton United (Saturday 29th). I think it’s going to take a bit longer for optimism with England given recent tweets from supporters during the Slovakia game. One guy dismantled his washing machine even though it wasn’t
32
broken. My personal favourite was someone who said “not saying this match is dull but I’ve compiled and laminated a list of my top 20 granary loaves”. One thing in this country we do get excited about is the transfer window. I can’t believe, despite nearly every window being an anti-climax, people still get excited about the next one. Then again, Big Brother, Bake Off, and The X-Factor are all still in existence despite all winners being as relevant as Timmy Mallet. Jack Wilshere was the surprise move this year on deadline day, signing for the mighty Bournemouth; but he is probably injured again by the time you are reading this. There were rumours going round that he was out for three months with seasickness.

Jolly hockey sticks! Speaking of injuries, whilst watching the Olympic Hockey Final between Team GB and Holland, I noticed the commentator refer to a British player as having to go off with a “Blood injury” then said “grazed knee”; that’s definitely been embellished and a bit different to how I first imagined it to be. That was around the time I seemed to watch any Olympic sport going; I never thought I would be engaged by BMX racing. It made me think about how these people actually get spotted? Maybe someone was doing their paper round at a decent speed. The one person I think deserved a Gold medal was Clair Balding; was it just me or did she do about sixteen consecutive 20 hour shifts for the BBC? To know that amount of information for pretty much every sport was incredible let alone doing it again for the Paralympic coverage.

Tanning Finally, what a fantastic effort by Yorkshire CCC this season who competitively challenged for all major honours. An agonising T20 Finals Day, Semi-Finalists in the Royal London One-Day Cup, and by the time you are reading this, will know whether they have won an incredible third Championship title on the bounce, or fallen just short. Credit to Coach Jason Gillespie for the way he has turned Yorkshire into a real force. He is going to be a massive loss for the county when he goes back to Australia after the season ends.

Although not yet operating in our glorious city, Uber is a ride-sharing app that allows you to summon, and pay for, a taxi-like service. Massively popular in the US, Uber has recently announced plans to start using self-driving cars in Pittsburgh. Yep, you’ll order a ride and it will arrive to take you somewhere... without a driver at the wheel. Yikes. To begin with, however, the fleet of autonomous Volvo cars will have a driver to sit at the controls and monitor everything, but the plan is to remove humans altogether from the steering wheel, and let the computer handle everything. So soon, once Uber come to York, you could be being driven to the train station by a robot. A robot!

Vroom, vroom, right? Wrong. Well, it might one day be wrong, if Nissan have anything to do with it. The car maker has recently road-tested it’s latest vehicle; one you won’t ever be able to buy, however. The evocatively entitled BladeGlider (we know, right?) is a fully electric sports car cable of 115mph, reaching 62mph in just four seconds. Because of the lack of a heavy engine, the BladGlider is almost silent, with the only sound coming from the squeal of the tyres on the tarmac. Nissan say that it (probably) won’t be releasing the car to buy, but instead made it as a proof-of-concept that electric vehicles can be just as quick as their petrol-powered cousins. Imagine nipping to the shops in that.

WEEEEEEEEEEEE-LIE!
York is famous for many things, but wheelies? Well, we are – as each year at Elvington Airfield, just south of the city, the Motorcycle Wheelie World Championships are held. Recently the world record for the fastest wheelie was smashed by Dutch rider Egbert van Popta, who managed to hit 213mph on just one wheel! What? Contestants (who come to York from around the globe to compete) have to complete 1km along the airfield’s runway on one wheel, with the exit speed taken as their attempt. Nerves of steel are most probably required, not only to go that fast but to do so on just one little wheel! If we were to try that we’d need special motorcycle suits. With special trousers. Still, well done to Egbert! Who would have thought that anyone called Egbert would be into motorcycles? What a world, eh?

ROUNDUP OF IFA 2016
Matt Todd gives us the lowdown on Europe’s largest Electronics trade fair The early news coming out of Berlin did very little to spark much interest in the Herbert Todd’s office; one of the first “highlights” being a new computer mouse featuring silent operation and buttons that still feature a “click” feel – not exactly earth shattering! However as the days progressed there were a few product gems that pushed their respective design areas forward. First up is the Bosch Autocook. This is a product that looks akin to a large deep fat fryer but in fact incorporates different technologies. Offered with its own app (and a cookbook for those who prefer to keep their iPad away from the mess of the kitchen) this multicooker makes short work of such diverse tasks as shallow frying, pressure cooking, yogurt making, sous vide and slow cooking. It looks a little unwieldy to become a feature of the majority of kitchens just now but could be
a glimpse into the future of home cooking.
MAKES SENSE
AEG also had a new cooker on show with the aptly named SenseCook oven. This looks like a regular built-in single oven but has some neat tricks up its sleeve to ensure you cook like a pro. A beautiful colour LCD interface is controlled via the central Command Wheel so that you can literally ask for your steak medium rare and the oven will cook it appropriately. How does it know when your food is done? By using a probe inside the oven it measures the temperature of the food rather than the air around it and cooks it accordingly, hopefully making you into more of a Keith Floyd than a Pink Floyd! Need any help or advice on picking your next cooker pop into one of our stores or give us a ring, we’re here to help! Visit www.htodd.co.uk

It’s dead easy to make faux graves from cardboard boxes and then paint them grey. Lightly sponge some black paint over the edges to create a grungy effect. Disclaimer: spooky twins not included.
HOW TO CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN 3. Make sure you scoop out all of the insides. Your shell should be less than 1 ½ inches thick 1. Choose a fresh but flat
bottomed pumpkin to carve for balance
2. When you cut the lid, cut into the pumpkin on an angle so it won’t fall on the flame
42
4. Draw on your design first – don’t go free hand!
There’s loads of websites where you can print out stencils if you don’t feel confident in creating your own. Check out: www.pumpkinpile.com
5. Make sure you use a sharp serrated knife to cut your pumpkin
The clue is in the name here. Why not make your own spooky scarecrow? He’ll keep the birds away (what’s left of the birds now, anyway) and you might get a few screams from unsuspecting kids when out trick or treating too.
Create a crime scene in your own front garden. You can buy crime scene tape online for as little as £1.29. n Visit: www.partypieces.co.uk
6. Put Vaseline where you have cut
the pumpkin to keep it fresh. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon inside to make it smell yummy if you decide to put a tea light inside. You may want to use a small led light instead.
YOUR HOME & GARDEN
As the nights draw in and the temperature starts to fall, here are some things to do and watch out for in the coming autumn months. • HE'S A FUNGI! Mushrooms and other fungi tend to be more noticeable during the autumn, so get out into the park or woods to see what you can find. You might also see them popping up in your own garden, or even in the cracks of city streets. • WHAT A FLOCKER! Autumn is when certain birds start to flock; either getting ready to leave for the winter, or arriving here from the arctic. Tits, starlings, rooks and others will start to gather, and if you make it out to the coast watch out for migratory geese arriving here for a “warm” winter.
• CAUGHT IN THE WEB. If you take an early morning walk, keep an eye out for dew-covered spider webs. Autumn makes it easier to see just how many spiders there are – like, everywhere! We recommend walking somewhere with lots of railings and fences, such as along the Foss by Rowntree's Wharf. You'll see thousands of pretty webs. • PICKY EATER? Go blackberrying! Autumn is when berry bushes tend to give over a huge crop, and wild blackberries taste delicious. Take a stroll along the cycle path from Haxby Road into Tang Hall and you'll be rewarded with a full belly or berries. Go easy, mind.

CONIFERS Conifers are some of the most underrated of plants, regarded by many gardeners as dull and boring. But they are vastly underestimated because they can add instant height and maturity, screening, structure, and all year round colour to the garden.
They come in all shapes, sizes, and colour, from compact forms such as Juniperus communis compressa, that only grows 2-3cm a year making it ideal for containers when planted with alpines, to fast growing giants like Leylandii, growing up to 90cm (3ft) a year and with the potential to reach 30m (100ft) tall. Colours vary from the bright blue-grey of Picea pungens varieties, through myriad shades of green, to the golds of Thuja ‘Rheingold’ and Chameacyparis ‘Ellwoods Gold’. Shapes are also diverse with the narrow upright pencil Cypress and Junipers pyramidal shaped Christmas tree like forms, and low growing groundcover varieties like Juniperus tamariscifolia and ‘Blue Carpet’.
NOT ALL GREEN
Most conifers are evergreen but there are exceptions Larix (Larch), Taxodium (Swamp Cypress), Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) and
Ginkgo to name a few. These species have lovely bright golden autumn foliage colours. Conifers associate well with heathers and ornamental grasses in mixed borders or can be used as focal points in more contemporary gardens, as well as being useful in pots and containers. Conifers can be bought from your local garden centre, container grown, or rootballed. In both cases at time of planting the rootball should not be disturbed if at all possible. If rootballed it is best to plant in either September or October when there is still warmth in the soil but moist enough to water them in. Most conifers will grow happily in just about any garden soil although there are a few varieties that will not tolerate lime, such as Cryptomeria and Larix. If you have a high content of lime in your soil junipers and pines are the best varieties to pick.
GROWING ON YOU
If container grown, you can plant any time of year except when there is a frost in the ground. When
planting in the summer months it is important to water regularly until roots are established and the plant can get moisture freely without help. For the best results, at planting time dig a hole twice the size of the rootball, this allows the soil to be loose making it easy for the new roots to disperse when back filled. Before backfilling it would help to add 'growmore' to the earth you have dug, then mix, place the conifer in the hole, backfill and firm, then water in. If it’s a dense evergreen hedge you want, conifers are a great choice. Some of the best varieties to use are Leylandii or Taxus (Yew) as these create a dense and easy to maintain hedge that will need cutting up to twice a year depending on variety. Leylandii receive a bad press but when it is correctly maintained and controlled they make a great hedge, growing up to 3ft (90cm) a year. Once established they form a solid barrier in only a couple of years. It is vital to keep them in check with little and often pruning as they do not respond well to severe pruning and will not re-grow from old wood. For whatever the use, or wherever you live, your garden won’t be complete without a conifer.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
Q.
I have grown leeks on my allotment for quite a few years with great success. But this year more than half of them have gone to seed. Could you please explain why this might have happened?
A. This is called disturbed growth phenomena, or bolting. The premature flowering and seeding of vegetable plants often causes frustration to gardeners when crops are lost in this way before maturity. Vegetables that are very prone to bolting include beetroot, brassicas, celery, lettuce, leeks, onions, and spinach. However, the factors controlling it are very complex and vary from crop to crop. In general, in order to flower, these plants require exposure to cold temperatures at a certain critical stage of their growth, and for certain lengths of time. Once they have been exposed in this way, nothing – not even prolonged periods of high temperatures – can prevent flowering. There is no real way to prevent bolting, although some cultivars have been selected for resistance to it, and are usually highlighted in seed catalogues. In general, however, early cultivars will bolt much more readily because
they are more likely to experience the appropriate bolt temperatures. Bolting will be less of a problem in a season following a mild and early spring, and more serious after a late and cold one. Brassicas for spring planting, if raised under glass, will be more prone to bolting than plants raised outdoors if low temperatures occur in late spring, as they will be further advanced and will have already reached the critical growth stage. It must be added, however, that day length also influences the onset of flowering and can interact with, or modify, the temperature-induced response. A rather different type of bolting is that commonly arising during the periods of dry weather, when plants are under stress. A natural response of most plants under such conditions is to flower and produce seed, but the likelihood of this can be lessened by giving them additional water at such times.
Q.
Could you please help me with some plants for winter planters and hanging baskets? I would like some contrasting leaves and flowers.
A. Ajuga burgundy glow and black scallop is low growing perennial with nice leaf colours and pretty blue flowers. Euonymus ‘emerald gaiety’ and ‘emerald ‘n’ gold’, offer you a very small shrub with gold and silver foliage.
• Fences • Decking • Gates • New • Repairs
46
Hebe buxifolia green globe, James Sterling, Pinguifolia pagei, and Rakaiensis, give you light green to golden foliage, with flowers in spring. Helichrysum ‘italicum’ curry plants bring a gorgeous bright silver that works well against the greens. Hedera ‘ivy’ is one of the best trailing plants for the bottom of baskets, or on the edge of planters – look for different leaf colours to give variation. Lamium ‘dead nettle’ white nancy is another good trailing plant with silver and white foliage and white flowers throughout winter. Lysimachia ‘goldilocks’ gives you yellow rounded leaves that trail through the basket and flowers yellow in spring. Oregano vulgare has light green leaves and blue flowers in spring, and it trails very well on the edge of hanging baskets and pots. For a centre pieces to most pots and baskets, a dwarf conifer can be used; Gold crest ‘wilma’ with yellow foliage, and Lawsoniana ellwoodii for grey green. For the brighter colours you can use winter flowering pansy’s and viola – the colour range is to die for. I hope your winter pots and baskets look beautiful and they give you joy throughout the winter months!

AUTUMN LEAVES TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.
As we go further into October, so the leaves begin to fall from the trees. A trickle at first, colder nights and windy days soon have them tumbling down. If stormy weather arrives, gusting winds will unleash a torrent so that by the end of the month many trees, especially the limes that line so many of York’s streets, will have been stripped bare.
on a calm day when the leaves are damp. I see no point in fancy leaf blowers that can struggle when leaves are wet and make an annoying din. To get the leaves into a wheelbarrow I scoop them up between two large seed trays – it’s like having giant hands and makes collection far quicker. As I need a lot of leaves, I also collect them from beneath the majestic trees that grace our lane and take them off the hands of neighbours.
To many people fallen leaves are an unwanted nuisance. Some are dumped on the compost heap where at least they are ‘recycled’, but a lot are thrown out. Green bins are brim full, black bin bags are stuffed to bursting point and, worst of all, smoky bonfires foul air. To me autumn leaves are not a burden but a bonus, to be turned into the leaf mould which I use as an essential ingredient in home-made potting compost.
LEAF IT OUT
Collecting needn’t be a chore. I use a metal leaf rake to gather them into a pile. This is best done
To make the leaf mould that will be part of my potting mix I stash the leaves in an enclosure made of chicken wire and wooden stakes. This can be
in any odd corner so long as it doesn’t dry out. To get a really fine mix I leave the heap for two years. After this it should be really crumbly with all the leaves broken down so it has the texture of peat, for which I use it as a substitute.
IN THE BAG
If you aren’t quite so greedy for leaf mould, smaller quantities can be made just as easily by placing wet leaves in bin liners tied at the top and punctured with a few holes. Leaf mould made this way is often ready sooner than that made in a stack and has the advantage of being more portable. You can also accelerate the decomposition process by shredding leaves. I sometimes use the lawn mower for this purpose (of course, you can also collect them this way if they fall onto a lawn). Although I use my leaf mould mainly for potting compost, it also has other uses in the garden. One year old partly decayed leaf mould makes a good mulch and weed suppressant. If I have any spare I tend to put it around soft fruit bushes. Part decayed leaf mould, and fresh leaves for that matter, can also be simply dug into the soil in winter. It doesn’t have much nutrient value but will at least add humus and act as a soil conditioner. Don’t waste those leaves!

TEAM MUM! Or not. Dad is flavour of the month at the minute for Shay. If it went off the ratio of nappy changing or, I don’t know, GIVING BIRTH, maybe I’d be in with a chance. According to psychotherapist and author of The Favourite Child, Dr. Ellen Weber Libby, it’s totally normal for kids to prefer one parent over the other (thank god, I was starting to worry). She adds: “All people have preferences for those with whom they have an unspoken ease or simpatico. That doesn’t mean that the child doesn’t love both parents equally.” If you’re going through this one, I feel your pain. Unfortunately the answer isn’t bribing with sweets, much to my dismay. Favouritism should be seen as harmless – it’s our reactions to it that will have a lifelong influence. As the grown-ups, it’s our job to not make our children feel guilty about having a favourite or try to buy their affection - there go the sweets then. “What is important is that neither parent, the favoured or ‘runner up,’ treat
50
the child differently from one another,” Libby says. “The expectation that each parent has of the given child should be similar.” So I guess i’m just going to have to grin and bare it. In the meantime I had a sneaky research spree to try and find decent ways of raising myself in my sons favour without it impacting him negatively. Here’s what I found:
THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR TIME SHARE: whether it’s food, an experience or even a story, sharing your knowledge with your little one is invaluable. READ: Bed time stories are a great place to start conversations with your child that they can go onto expect regularly. LISTEN: Children love being heard. Ask your kids about their day, then simply let them talk. There’s no need for corrections. Just enjoy learning about what goes on in their little heads.
Changes to car seat regulations Heads up, it looks as though the law on Children's car seats will be changing soon (estimated, December 2016). As it stands, children up until the age of 12 or height of 135cm must use a car seat. Only EU-approved child car seats can be used and they will display a capital 'E' in a circle on the label. Under new rules, backless booster seats or booster cushions will only be allowed if your child is taller than 125cm and weighs more than 22kg, which means many parents will need to invest in a high backed booster seat, which offers more protection in a side impact crash situation.
Halloween is on the horizon which in mum world means sugar and excited children. I’m planning on trying to get the best of both worlds this halloween by making a healthy trick and a naughty treat for the kids. Decorating cakes together can be a great bonding session but a messy affair. Rice crispy cakes are my favourite go-to for easy homemade treats. I’m going to make pumpkin rice crispy balls with orange food colouring and white chocolate. Heat a bar of white chocolate in the microwave or over a ban of boiling water – check regularly in the microwave as it can go south pretty quickly! Then mix up a few drops of orange food colouring, a couple of cups of rice crispys and roll into balls. Add green gummy strings as the stalk

Nor is going to an adult Halloween party wearing a pair of plastic vampire teeth you picked up from the market for 50p. TRY HARDER. To that end, get to Fantasy World at Clifton Moor this spooky season, as they stock a huge range of truly awful costumes for both big and little ghouls. GETTING WEIRDER Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. in the early mornings, while the trees burn with oranges and reds. And then shrug it off all over my front lawn, the buggers.
MAKE LIKE A TREE... Last month, I wrote about learning how to drive. After reading it in the shower (seriously), my wife's reaction was, “That was weak.” “Weak?” I asked, handing her a towel. “Why, because I joked about using my new-found motoring powers to leave you?” “No.” She snatched the towel from me. “It was just weak. And unfunny.” Such harsh bathroom-based criticism might have had some lasting effect on me, were it not for the time in which the insult was hurled. For while my dear wife showered, water softening and eventually crumbling the pages of last month's mag, I was peering out of the window. The sun was setting and it was before 9pm. The summer was ending.
ENERGY
At this time of the year I feel a strange energy surge through my body, while in my head (normally a twisted and perverted place) happy thoughts and
new ideas burst into life. You see, quite unlike a lot of people, I am genuinely energised by the coming of autumn, and the onset of winter. My wife's “constructive” criticism could do my ego no ill, for I was happy. I was born in the autumn, so perhaps – to me at least – it feels like a fresh beginning. The summer dies down, the temperatures drop to acceptable levels, and my choice of what to wear extends beyond 'a t-shirt' to include my rather snazzy collection of tank tops. And it's my birthday, so, y'know, presents an' stuff. But this is also the time of year when my imagination seems to kick into overdrive. Nothing interesting ever happened during daylight hours – fact – so the longer nights draw my creative processors down imagined spooky alleys and into mysterious alternate worlds. Its the time of year to read something weird, something magical and strange. It is also the time of year when Britain looks it's most prettiest. Mist clings to the fields
During previous autumns my creativity found outlets beyond the written word. When I was 19 I made a short film about two men who hated trees so much that they decided to chop each and every one of them down. The film, set and filmed during the autumn in the grounds of a lavish stately home in Doncaster (yeah, they've got stately homes in Donny too, you Yorkie snobs!), featured a memorable scene in which the last tree on earth 'fought back' and killed one of the blokes. It was awful, as everything produced by a pretentious 19 year old film student tends to be, but it summed

up how I felt about autumn: weird stuff has a greater potential for happening. Back before I wrote this kind of stuff about being a dad and a verbally-abused husband, I used to write more fiction – had a lot of it published too. I found that the autumn was like a seasonal ideas generator, and I would fill entire notebooks with story and novel ideas during October and November, to write and develop throughout the following year. It was like I was receiving my annual update from my manufacturer, or getting messages from another version of me in another dimension. The version of Howard that is super successful and massively popular. God, I hate him.
“Nothing interesting ever happened during daylight hours”. Actually, that's it; in autumn the borders between worlds seem to thin, and we are all influenced by bizarre alternate sources. My sources are encouraging me to hunt trolls under bridges at 3am; yours might simply be encouraging you to appreciate dew-covered spider webs as you walk along the river. Dunno. Either way, listen to them, savour this magical time of year, and send me a birthday present. SLAM DUNK! HAVE ANY STORIES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? LET US KNOW!

DID YOU KNOW? Looking for great walk around town, but have mobility issues or use a wheelchair? To see the leaves turn orange and fall, why not take a tour of the river along New Walk? From the King’s Arms pub on King’s Staith, all the way along the eastern bank, over the Millennium Bridge, and back up past Rowntree’s Park to Skeldergate, you won’t encounter single step. There’s a couple of places to buy hot chocolate along the way, too!

Tasks may include giving someone a lift, picking up a prescription, or helping to shift some furniture. n Fancy it? Call 750266.

To make sure you are answering the door to the right person, and for peace of mind as to who is knocking, install the Ring Video Doorbell. This clever doorbell features a HD camera which, over WiFi, streams live footage straight to your smartphone. Is that the postman or is it some cold-calling stranger? DIAMOND CELEBRATIONS This month a beloved York charity celebrates 60 years of helping those in the city who need it the most. Join us in wishing the MS Society York Branch a very happy Diamond Jubilee!
BIIIIIIIG THANK YOU’S!
In 1954 Sir Richard Cove, the man who set up The Multiple Sclerosis Society of England, approached Lord Martin Fitzalan Howard, of Carlton Towers, with the idea of setting up a branch in York. The first meeting of the newly formed society was held on 17th November 1956, and since then it has gone from strength to strength. Covering everywhere in and around York, The MS Society currently has around 250 members, including volunteers and committee members who are dedicated to helping people who have MS, as well as providing help to their carers and families. In the past this has ranged from delivering coal during the winter, paying gas and electricity bills, and providing transportation. These days the group can also help with member's IT skills, studies toward a degree, equipment costs, driving lessons, and even some much-deserved respite time.
TOGETHER
The society runs a regular Friday cafe where members can get together and enjoy some great company, a cracking lunch from a varied menu, and even often a fun quiz. Based at New Earswick Folk Hall, a team of volunteer drivers run a service to help some of the members get safely to the cafe, using a fleet of vehicles equipped to take wheel chairs. As well as the weekly meet up, members also relish in their monthly trips. The aim of the group is focused on providing members with the opportunity to get out and meet each other, share stories, share jokes, and visit places they may not otherwise be able to get to. n To find out more about the cafe, and the exciting trips, call 758577.
60
The MS Society of York would like to thank everyone who has helped them during the past 60 years. Without the hard work (and time) of dedicated volunteers, staff, committee members, and the friends of family of the people the society helps, they could never have made it to this milestone. Well done to all! n To find out more about the society, and ways that you could get involved, visit www.mssociety.org.uk

easy, but which one’s best for you? BB cream stands for beauty balm. The wonder stuff started in Asian markets and is promoted as an all in one primer, sun block, foundation and moisturiser.
