Back to school As another summer groans to a halt and September clears the way for autumn, York is full of fun to be had and places to be explored.

Grand Opera House is back open, and we’re looking forward to The Woman in Black, while City Cruises have got their gorgeous evening trips on until 25th September.

This month, we also got to find out what it’s like to be a beekeeper in York when we spoke to Pete Allanson - turn to P.16 to find out more.

And for those of you who enjoyed our first short story last month, prepare for a plot twist in this edition. I found myself chuckling in surprise at this one.

Getting there This walk explores the undulating countryside west of Wetherby. Apart from one steep climb, gradients are modest. Most of the route is well surfaced, but the tracks at direction points 5 and 6 can be muddy. There are a couple of places where care is needed in following the directions – these are underlined.

Directions

1 Starting from the bus station entrance, turn right towards the mini roundabout (if starting from Crossley St. Car Park, take the alley alongside Hartlaw LLP) leading to the Market Place and bus station). Turn right at the roundabout and cross the river. Immediately over the bridge, turn right (Lodge Lane). At the leisure centre car park go right to the riverside footpath. Follow this as it bends left with the river to reach a footbridge.

2 Cross the bridge. On the other side, go half left across grass with a playground right to a tarmac footpath in the tree avenue. Turn left on the path.

Continue to a stone stile and head straight over the field to the fence gap. Go onto the golf course following markers across a track and fairway. Take a clear path through tall grass to a footpath sign pointing right. Go under the bridge then half left, crossing another fairway towards white signs. At these go up steps to a road.

4 Cross the road into Linton Common opposite (ignore private road sign, it’s a public footpath).

After the last house, take the signed footpath right, up steps. Climb the slope through trees to reach a tarmac lane. Turn left and continue for almost a kilometre to a hotel gateway.

5 Go right on the signed path through trees to a field. Cross the field heading towards two large trees. Here go left then right to walk along the wood edge. Continue on the path which goes into trees, then has a narrow enclosed stretch with a field left. Keep ahead when the path widens bending left to reach a tarmac drive. Turn right but at a wooden gate take the bridleway (blue arrow) left heading along the edge of a field.

6 Continue passing a wood to the left but at a wooden fence/metal hand gate turn right through the hedge gap into the corner of a field. Go 3 Cross the road and turn left, following the path/ ahead down the field with a hedge left. Continue ahead on what becomes a partly hedged track to verge for 600 metres until the Memorial Hall a tarmac drive. Ignore Back Lane on the right to on the left. Take the track on its right, following it arrive at Sicklinghall’s main street. through gates into a concreted area. Go through white gates and continue ahead on track which

Wetherby is 14 miles from York using the B1224. The recommended starting point is Wetherby bus station.

Bus 412 runs five times daily (not Sunday) from York Piccadilly and rail station. If driving, the easiest parking place is the Crossley street car park (free) by which the walk passes.

Refreshments There are numerous pubs and cafes in Wetherby.

The only pub on route is the Scotts Arms in Sicklinghall.

What to see There’s lots of variety on this walk. The attractive and mostly quiet countryside is a contrast to bustling Wetherby with its stone buildings clustered around the marketplace. There’s also the river Wharfe, a manicured golf course and the mansions of affluent Linton. Sicklinghall is an unspoilt stone village while Stockeld Park is a mix of stately grandeur and amusement park. The Harland Way cycle track provides a calm and easy route back to Wetherby.

7 Turn right and continue through the village passing the pub, village hall and pond. Just after the pond leave the street left down Stockeld Lane (ignore no entry sign, it’s a public bridleway). Continue passing a lodge house and security gate. Stay on the now rougher surfaced lane walking through trees and then parkland. Do not go right towards Stockeld Park House but stay on the track which is joined by a tarmac drive from the house. At a meeting

8 Cross the busy road with care and head down the track opposite.

Where the track splits keep right of the open-sided barn then go through a metal gate following the path half left across a field. In the corner go through a gate and down hedged track to the Harland Way cycle route.

9 Turn right and continue for nearly two kilometres ignoring crossing paths on the edge of Wetherby.

Where the Harland Way forks in two at a grassy area go left but about 20 metres further on go right up a slope. At the bike barrier do not go ahead but turn right into a grassy area following a track along its edge beside trees. Soon merge with a surfaced track from the left but in 20 metres turn left through the bike barrier into a park taking the path between young trees.

Exit the park through barriers and go left to a T junction. Turn right and head down the residential street (Barleyfields Road). Keep ahead where this narrows going through an alley leading to a road guarded by metal barriers. Cross the road (Crossley Street Car Park right) to continue down The Ginnel opposite. Soon arrive at Westgate.

Turn left to the Market Square and bus station.

Bee -hind the scenes We caught up with Pete Allanson from Shire Honey in York to find out what it’s like being a full-time bee keeper.

When he was a kid, Pete Allanson would swell up whenever he got stung by a bee.

Fast forward to today, and he’s a fulltime beekeeper who supplies honey and mead to York businesses.

And if your first question is how often does a beekeeper get stung? (Like ours was), Pete’s happy to answer candidly: “Daily. And yes, it still hurts. Your body gets resistant to it, but there’s a couple of little red spots there on my finger that’s where I’ve been stung. I went out on Monday, and I was wearing shorts but had the bee suit on, and they decided to go for my thigh muscles. I must’ve got about 10 to 20 stings in my thigh muscles. The air was blue.”

Originally a farmer, Pete moved to York in 1989 but didn’t discover beekeeping until 2000: “I was working with a local builder who kept bees, and he got us interested. But the next time I got stung, I swelled up badly. So that put me off for a few more years. In 2005, I thought: oh, just go for it and see if you build up resistance - which I have done. If I get stung on my arms - that doesn’t affect me. If I get stung on my face where there’s not a lot of muscle, it will come

up, but only for half an hour.”

Beekeeping began as a hobby, with just three or four hives. But in 2010, Pete was forced to make a decision on beekeeping full time: “Around 2010 I got made redundant from the factory where I was working so I just sort of thought, aw just go for it, which was a struggle at the start. Because I still had a mortgage then, but now that it’s paid off and the kids have left home, we only need a cheap lifestyle.”

“And we’ve slowly built up, it’s been organic growth, we’ve tried to avoid borrowed money and fancy equipment and stuff like that. It’s well, 2005 to now, 16 years. It’s been done on a secure foundation.”

Pete says that the key to beekeeping is patience and perseverance, and after talking about his day-to-day, we can see why. Beekeeping, like farming, is at nature’s mercy: “Around about this time of year, I would take them [the bees] to the North York Moors, but last year it was devastated by the heather beetle. I’ve got to go up and check to see whether the heather’s recovered.

And see whether it will be alright. I took 60 colonies up last year, and I got £60

worth of honey.”

There’s also swarming season to contend with, which, while a natural part of bees natural cycles, can be hard work for beekeepers: “You can end up losing the swarm. Half the bees will just leave once a colony has swarmed and you’ve lost your honey crop from that hive for the rest of the year, so you’re always fighting a battle.”

Of course, Pete wouldn’t be doing it if it was all work and no play: “I enjoy working with the bees the most, but it is also nice to know that I have made something from start to finish with the Mead.”

SHORT STORY This is our second instalment from York Wordsmiths… the group meet for tea and cake, and more recently over Zoom, to set writing tasks and critique each others’ work. Each month we’ll be sharing a short story or poem by one of their writers.

Thursday Morning

It was just another Thursday morning but something astonishing was about to happen to Trevor Andrews as he walked to work.

He had seen it first yesterday morning.

It was a black briefcase, perched on a wall. Trevor looked at it and decided somebody must be nearby, perhaps tying a shoelace or distracted by a text message, and had put it there for safety.

The pavement was busy with commuters hurrying to catch the morning train.

There was a cold drizzle falling and everything and everybody looked grey.

Trevor walked on by, and thought no more about it.

Trevor reached the same spot on Thursday morning and looked at the wall. The briefcase had gone. He walked up to the wall, and looked over it. Sure enough, lying amongst the nettles and rubbish on the other side, was the black briefcase. He looked left and right, and then reached over the wall and grasped the handle.

There was a clatter of nailed boots behind him, and the clicking of guns.

‘Armed police! Stay where you are, turn around slowly and put your hands above your head!’

Trevor froze. He dropped the briefcase back behind the wall and turned around, hands held high. He was confronted by a SWAT team of six officers, dressed in black, wearing bullet-proof vests.

One of them was pointing a taser at him and the rest had the standard Glock 17s.

‘This is a taser which I will use if you don’t co-operate!’

Trevor stood very still as his

hands were cuffed behind his back.

Commuters he knew by sight stood gawping at him.

‘Clear the area!’ commanded Taser.

Trevor heard the usual warning, ‘You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence…’ as he was pushed towards a black BMW parked at the kerb and shoved into the back seat.

What followed was a nightmare. He was given a coffee in a paper cup and sat in an interview room for hours while questions were fired at him.

He repeated the seemingly irrelevant details of his private life, his work, his past, who he had a beer with in the pub. No, he didn’t have a mobile phone, new-fangled technology was not for him. Why did nobody believe him? Officers took turns at questioning him, some of them losing their tempers, others playing at being nice. Then he was left alone for what seemed like hours ‘OK, Mr Andrews, you’re free to go!’ He picked up his raincoat and hurried down the steps of the police station, watched by the duty officer at reception.

Trevor climbed the stairs to his attic bedsit. All was well. He opened the

small door into the roof space. There was a blast of warm fragrance. Lights blazed, water dripped, and a jungle of cannabis plants reached up into the rafters, ready for harvesting. He checked the iPhone lying on a crate just inside. He never carried it. He sighed with relief. So, the money had been intercepted, but the exchange had been clumsy. If they didn’t text him until Thursday, how was he to know he was supposed to collect the briefcase on Wednesday morning?

This month, our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson, has enjoyed the pre-season success.

It's been an intriguing start to life in the new LNER Community Stadium for York City. As I write this, the Minstermen have had a brilliant pre-season: unbeaten and building up nicely. But the one overwhelming factor of this is that, once again, nothing has been straightforward for getting the season up and running.

I'm talking about issues with tickets and having the correct certification in place for full capacity ahead of the season opener against Kidderminster. There have been various teething problems throughout the months leading towards the season and, for whatever reason, this has no doubt caused the club to miss out on the much-needed revenue we need going forward. Not only that, but once again it has added to a long list of questions about the relationship between the club and the fans.

Looking more at what is going on on the pitch, the season ahead should be promising. A strong side with a great all-round forward line that will not only get goals but allow Watson to change the system and get the goals necessary to finally get out of the National League North. The addition of Mark Beck is certainly an excellent signing if he can

remain fit as he joins until January from Harrogate. Looking at performances in pre-season, I think Mackenzie Heaney could be a masterstroke from the manager as he looks to be a great talent who will chip in with a few goals and assists along the way.

One area I still worry about is the depth in defence, but I certainly believe Sam Fielding, another new recruit for this season, looks very comfortable at centre back or in midfield. I do hope (when we need it) that as well as Beck, Steve Watson looks more to the loan market to freshen the side up during the season. I know it's not been the best two years for football, but it always feels there has been a slight reluctance to use as much as other sides around us as Kings Lynn did in the season they were promoted on the PPG ruling as that could be the fine margins for this year.

Who will be promoted this year?

I have to say AFC Fylde look very strong, and whoever finishes above them this season will no doubt be at the top of the table. I hope it's us, but you know how this league works: it's just so unpredictable. Another threat for this year would be Boston, picking up

from anyone in this league.

There's a long season ahead. I think everyone will agree that fans being back and being able to complete the season will be the main winners for most who love the beautiful game.

So, this month, I thought I’d inform you all of a little-known scheme that has been in place since 2015 for VAT relief on certain products if you are chronically sick or disabled.

As it has become more feasible for people living with disabilities and chronic illness to stay at home, it became apparent that those homes would need adapting to suit growing needs. To help, the 2015 Government came up with a scheme whereby if you are adapting your home to make it more user friendly for you, and you use VAT registered fitters (which we are at Karemel Bespoke Bathrooms Ltd) you could save the VAT on your work. This is a saving of 20% - so

In short, you’ll not have to pay VAT if you’re having a new bathroom, washroom or lavatory installed or an existing bathroom, washroom or lavatory, extended or adapted if the work’s being done to help you because of your disability.

You’ll only be able to have eligible building work VAT-free if you’re chronically sick or disabled and the building work is being done in your own home. As I write in the last days of July, four or so weeks before you’re likely to be reading this, the first signs of blight are evident on the leaves of a few of the potato plants. Potato blight, or more accurately late blight (Latin name Phytophthora infestans), is a fungal disease that first affects the leaves, then the tubers of potatoes.

Prevalent in wet and humid weather, a severe attack can quickly destroy the haulm (foliage). Blight spores from the leaves

washed into the soil can then infect the tubers, turning them into smelly mush. In conditions favourable to blight, entire crops can be lost. Indeed, this is what happened in the 1840s when the disease, coupled with other factors, changed the course of Irish history.

When potato blight begins to spread rapidly, the only effective remedy on a garden scale is to cut off and remove all the haulm before the fungus can spread to the tubers. This is especially important when heavy rain occurs or is forecast. Fortunately, the blight symptoms I spotted were only incipient and the weather conditions were dry.

Because of this, I decided to take no immediate action. Only if the heavens opened and the blight began to spread would the haulm be

chopped down.

In any case, the few plants infected were of two second early varieties Charlotte and Kestrel planted in midApril. By late July both types should have had enough growing time to swell the tubers to a reasonable size.

Providing blight didn’t run rampant there should still be a worthwhile crop.

This is one plank of my strategy for managing potato blight, an everpresent menace to the potato growing gardener. By cultivating early and fast-maturing second early varieties, like Kestrel and Charlotte, there’s a good chance of getting a crop before blight strikes. The other way I aim to cope is by growing later maturing ‘maincrop’ varieties (types to store for the winter) with strong blight resistance.

This year, that’s Alouette, Carolus, Sarpo Axona and Sarpo Mira. These varieties, especially the latter two, can be expected to shrug off blight in even the wettest conditions. Most years the haulm of the Sarpo varieties remains free of damaging levels of blight into the autumn.

If you grow potatoes on any scale I’d recommend adopting a similar

Tony Chalcraft approach. Relying on varieties that succumb to the slightest touch of blight, for example, the old favourite King Edward or the knobbly but popular Pink Fir Apple is a gamble. Using a mix of early maturing and blight-resistant types is far more likely to yield a crop, even in the most downpour drenched summers.

Tomatoes grown outdoors are especially susceptible to blight as by the time they start to ripen the disease is frequently rife. Unfortunately, the number of varieties with reliable resistance is far fewer than for potatoes.

PS It’s just hours since this column was written and there’s been a deluge of rain. As this is certain to ignite the blight, I’ll now be removing the foliage of those potato varieties showing signs of infection.

The Research and Development Team from the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are inviting local residents to take part in a short online questionnaire about the impact Coronavirus has had on day-to-day life and mental health.

The short survey takes 15 minutes and will help researchers find out what is helpful for people during this time and what may be causing some people to be affected more than others in terms of their mental wellbeing.

The research is part of a wider study that many other hospitals and trusts are taking part in and is being led by

Southern Health NHS Trust.

Participants need to be over the age of 16, living in the UK and have access to a computer to complete the survey.

Have you ever licked a cat's toes? Well, we haven't and we would suggest you don't try it! Salty Toes had been living by the sea before he came to the Centre, however, his owner had to move away and there wasn't any room for him. He has found life here a little stressful and has been hiding away, but we were told that in his last home he was an independent but friendly boy who didn't wander too far and liked to give his owner a social head butt from time to time. We have no reason to believe Salty Toes won't come out of his shell when he's back in a proper home, he just needs a patient soul to help him back up on his feet again and to boost his confidence. It's always sad to see cats like Salty Toes having a tough time here in the Centre so we're hoping someone comes along soon to cheer him up...could that be you?

PRINCESS FURRYBOOTS, 2 years old

Princess Furryboots came to the Adoption Centre along with her 4 kittens from a multi-cat household. She had been living in her previous home with 40 other cats (that we know of) so when she arrived at the Centre she was a bit stressed. Princess Furryboots has understandably found it hard to settle during her time here but despite this, she has proved herself to be an excellent mum raising all four kittens successfully. Now that she has been with us for a while and her kittens are no longer dependent on her, Princess F has started to relax a bit more, and she has gone from a cat that we couldn’t touch - to a cat that is now actively seeking a gentle fuss. She still has moments where she will get a bit worried but as long as we respect her space it never goes any further than a hiss. Given the space and patience to settle in, we're sure she will prove herself to be the sweet cat that we are gradually getting to meet.

The Principal York Recently dubbed by The Times newspaper as ‘one of the UK’s most glamorous station hotels,’ The Principal has been one of the crown jewels of York since its conception in 1878. The 2016 refurbishment by award-winning architect, Goddard Littlefair, has cemented its place as a top tier modern classic, writes Krystal Starkey.

It’s a Friday morning, and my partner and I are in the car back home after an overnight stay at The Principal York.

We’ve come to the conclusion that we have never - and probably never will have - a better start to the day than the one we’ve had this morning.

It started at 7.30am when I woke up in a super king bed after a solid, utterly uninterrupted sleep, pulled open the curtains and saw York Minster in all its glory.

The room is generous in proportion, luxurious in design and has a calming colour scheme. I fell in love with the marble bathroom immediately and having now seen a walk-in wardrobe in the flesh, I know for sure that I need one.

The design across the hotel is a delicate blend of late-victorian architecture and modern elegance. Neutrals are the backdrop for textured layers with brass fittings. The iron staircase is a

masterpiece, and, unusually, you might find taking the stairs a more attractive option in this establishment.

Anyway, back to the best morning of all time: We’d booked in at the leisure centre for 8am and when we got down to the pool, through sheer luck and timing, we had the whole place to ourselves.

The pool is a modest size but plenty for a quick swim. Next to it, there’s a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. We happily spent 40 minutes lolling around, giddy at the fact that we were the only people in there.

The buffet breakfast deserves a special mention. As well as the usual coffee, tea and juice, there’s also a freshly blitzed spinach smoothie.

The breakfast spread is kept immaculate - no beans in the sausages or mushrooms in the bacon here, and any spilt food is quickly swept up by the

spritely staff. I pick up an extra croissant on my way out and try to hide how much food I’ve piled on my plate.

So the Principal has got the mornings down, but the foundation for a successful morning is a brilliant evening first. And the hotel delivers on both fronts with its celebration package.

As part of the package, guests get to enjoy a bottle of Champagne on arrival and a delicious 3-course dinner in the AA Rosette Refectory Kitchen and Terrace restaurant. Watch yourself with this one, I practically danced down to dinner after a few glasses of bubbly.

The Refectory is an iron-built conservatory with leafy vines and tan leather furniture. It’s chic and understated.

I opt for the Chicken liver paté with a seasonal rhubarb chutney and toasted brioche to start with and don’t come up for air until it’s all gone. I’m a believer in

My partner has the spiced vegetable soup and for mains, a steak (mediumrare). I go for the Aberdeen Angus beef burger with truffle mayo. The portions are generous, and the meat tender and juicy.

For dessert, we chose the dark chocolate fondant with malted cream and the salted caramel tart with vanilla ice cream. Both of the desserts are indulgent and rich choices, and by the end of it, we’re debating who is going to roll who up to the hotel room.
