Your Local Link began when I was nine years old. I didn’t live in the catchment area, but my grandma did and it was always on the kitchen table alongside paperwork, reading glasses and, if we were lucky, a plate of biscuits. I’d plonk myself down, pick up the magazine and hastily turn to the health and beauty pages. Little did I know that I would end up working there one day...

It’s come a long way since then and, ninety-one issues later, I’m proud to see Your Local Link through its 200th issue. But without our readers, advertisers and staff, we simply wouldn’t be here today. So the biggest thank you goes to you: the local independent businesses who promote yourselves with us and the local community who use those services and keep us in check when we mess up the sudoku.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

HOVINGHAM AND SCACKLETON

This walk in the Howardian Hills explores the undulating countryside to the south and west of Hovingham. The walk, which goes through farmland, woodland and parkland, includes several climbs, especially on the quiet road between Coulton and Scackleton. There’s also a very short stretch alongside a fast road at Point 6 in the directions where care should be taken. Apart from this, the route is straightforward and well signed, except after Point 3 in the directions where paths are indistinct and can be overgrown.

Directions

1 Starting outside The Park café and hair salon on Park Street go across the green opposite and head down the pavement of Main Street passing the Hovingham Inn and Stores. At Hovingham Bakery off the main road to the left take the adjacent footbridge and go left down Brook Street. In 100 metres go right on a tarmacked bridleway. In about 100 metres, where the bridleway turns left, go over a stile on the left just before the bend. Follow the path along the edge of the field, then cross a stile and track to continue with trees to the left. At the end of the trees, go over the footbridge and continue ahead (not left) along a line of trees between fields.

At the kissing gate, turn left before passing through a farm gate.

2 With an ornate bridge visible ahead turn right and head through the grass pasture between the trees and the stream. Eventually, a stile will appear next to a white gate. Go over the stile, cross the road and take the signed footpath opposite through a gate into woods. At the end of the trees go through a kissing gate and continue with a fence and stream to the left. Keep with the stream on the edge of several fields to arrive at a kissing gate and track.

3 Take the track left but after 15 metres head right through a kissing gate into a field heading slightly left but keeping below house and garden. After a gate follow the path through an overgrown area with a pond to the right. Go through a metal gate into a field and follow the path through tall grass keeping near a fence on the right. At narrow end of the field go through a gate and over bridge to head up a slope towards a gate in the fence line ahead.

Pass through the gate and head uphill aiming for a telegraph pole. Before the pole, at a right angle in the hedge, go over a stile and continue with hedge on the left. Where the hedge ends keep ahead on the track between crops. At grass field follow the track right but soon veer diagonally left across the grass to the left corner and exit onto the road at edge of Coulton by a kissing gate.

4 Turn left on the road. This is followed for nearly a mile, at first steeply downhill passing Coulton Mill at the bottom and then steeply uphill to the edge of Scackleton.

5 Just after the Scackleton sign, take a sharp left down a tarmac lane. Continue on this No Through Route, going downhill and passing Newstead

The recommended starting point is Park Street in Hovingham where there’s usually plenty of roadside parking. It’s also possible to start in Scackleton but roadside parking is limited.

Hovingham is 18 miles north of York approached via Strensall and Sheriff Hutton. Public transport to Hovingham is difficult.

The only feasible route is to travel to Malton by bus or train and then take bus 194 which runs five times a day to the village (no Sunday service).

Refreshments Both The Worsley Arms Hotel and Hovingham Inn (open Thu.-Sun.) have lunch menus. The Hovingham Bakery & Rolling Pin Café is open Wed. to Sun. On Park Street, The Park at Hovingham hair salon doubles as a café and is open Tues-Sat.

What to see This walk takes you through a wide array of countryside with plenty of woodland and attractive streamside sections.

Good views can be had at several points over the Vale of Pickering and towards the North York Moors. Hovingham is an attractive stone-built estate village. The standout feature is the Palladian style Hovingham Hall with its unusual stable block entrance from the village. Further views of the house, normally open for a limited period in June, can be obtained from the path through the parkland. You’ll see Coulton Mill on a quiet roadside section, it’s part of a restoration project and developing cider making enterprise.

Farm, until the tarmac turns sharp left. Head straight down the bridleway signed Potticar Bank. At the corner of the field take the obvious grassy path uphill with a fence to the right. You’ll then reach a road.

6 Turn right on the road and go along it for 150 metres to take the signed public bridleway on the left. You’ll pass a

7 Arriving at a gate: don’t go through it but take the path before on the left, signed Hovingham. Follow this between a field and a stream. Continue into the woods with a field on the left. At a gate follow the sign and go right over a ditch towards a gate to the left of a large oak tree.

8 Go through the gate into the wood heading uphill. At a junction go right on a track as indicated by a blue arrow on a low post. At a cross-track, continue ahead uphill. Ignore a path coming in from the left and in 20 metres keep ahead at crossing track. Soon leave the wood on a clear track heading across fields. Follow this with the roofs of Hovingham eventually coming into view to the road. Turn right then cross the road to take a tarmac footpath alongside the small green to join the main road as it turns sharp right. Continue on the main road, ‘High Street’, for a short distance to Park Street on the left.

If you are part of a charity, community or volunteer group in York that benefits people aged 65 and over or people living with disabilities you could qualify to receive £250 from Prestige Nursing.

Prestige Nursing supports people to live safely, happily and as independently as possible in the comfort of their home but now the care provider is going one step further by donating money to community groups in York, too.

Prestige Nursing said: "We understand that local charities, community and volunteer groups; who also help our communities to thrive, have been impacted by recent events. We have therefore decided to create our own Community Support Fund to provide these groups with some much needed support so that they can continue to carry out the wonderful services they too provide. We will be awarding

£250 periodically throughout the year to applicable organisations/groups within the local area of York."

Application Criteria • The organisation (or its beneficiaries) must be based in the local area of York • The community fund must be used to benefit people aged 65 and over or people with mental illness, physical or learning disabilities or a life altering condition.

WHAT LOCKDOWN LOOKED LIKE FOR HERBERT TODD’S

Making the most of the stamp duty holiday

It would seem that over the last few months in lockdown we’ve had very little to be happy about – lockdown haircuts, lockdown weight gain… but as the country returns slowly to the ‘new normal’ a few things have been put into place to help us out, especially if you are thinking of moving house.

At Karemel, we’ve recently had a lot of enquiries from people who want to sell their home and buy a new one because they want to make the most of the stamp duty holiday, but their estate agent has told them that the bathroom is letting their property down. It may be the smallest room in the house, but if a prospective buyer walks in and thinks it needs work, they can automatically expect nearly a £10,000 reduction on the asking price!

To avoid this, I would say it is

Welcome back, everyone! It’s been nearly six months since I last wrote to you all and I hope that you are in good health and looking forward to getting back to something like normal. I thought I would give you a little insight this month into how the lockdown looked for Herbert Todd’s and what challenges you might face if you need an appliance in the short term.

Once the effects of the pandemic became apparent in early March I held what I called at the time a 'disaster avoidance meeting,' first with the partners and then with the whole of my retail staff.

We made plans to mitigate the effects of a severe downturn in demand and everyone was on board.

That soon went out of the window as the Boris and Rishi Show was thrust upon us and they unveiled their raft of measures to see us through the worst of it.

With all three showrooms forced to close and most of our work colleagues furloughed I relied on the help of Heather, Chris, Pete and my brother, David, to run a business normally manned by nearly thirty people. The phones never stopped ringing for the three months of lockdown and we sold around half the amount of products compared to a normal quarter. David and I PPEd up and installed washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and freezers for those that couldn't manage it themselves as we wanted to make sure we did not leave our customers out in the cold. This also had the positive by-product of slimming us both down at a time when the gym was shut!

On the flip side, we hardly sold any range cookers, large fridge freezers or full kitchen packages during lockdown. You guys clearly want to get in front of these products and get properly acquainted with

them before you make a decision. On top of that, our electricians were all furloughed because it was clear that you did not want us working in your houses during that time - which is very sensible.

Fortunately, both these facets of the business have bounced back fully with the unwinding of the lockdown and we are seeing very strong demand for new range cookers and built-in ovens as well as our new kitchen design service headed up by Melanie. I think it’s fair to say that during our forced time at home there are a few of us that have looked hard at our current kitchen arrangements and found them wanting, sadly that includes Mrs Todd!

So, apart from the COVID safety measures we have in place, things are largely back to normal. What we are seeing though are stock shortages across the board. During the pandemic, nearly all factories across the globe had to shut for some time and even now may be operating at reduced capacity due to distancing issues. This is presenting a huge challenge to us to meet the demands you rightly put on us when you need an appliance but please bear this in mind when you visit us or our website because your first choice may not always be immediately available. This situation will undoubtedly improve as the year rolls on (COVID depending).

A Yorkshire Pear Not many varieties of pear originate in Yorkshire. Some of the choicer varieties, for example, the ubiquitous Conference, come from southern counties. Many others, including the delectable Doyenné du Comice, come from France. A surprising number have their origins in Belgium, a country better known for beer, chips, waffles and chocolate than its fruit.

One of the few pears with Yorkshire roots is the variety Hessle. Sometimes also referred to as the ‘hazel’ pear, it is said to have originated in the small town of the same name just east of Hull. Although almost certainly more ancient, the variety was first officially recorded in 1827 when exhibited at a London fruit show. In the nineteenth century, it was popular throughout the

country, especially in northern England and southern Scotland. Today Hessle trees can still be found in old orchards in Yorkshire. Although no longer grown commercially young trees for home growing can be bought from several specialist fruit tree nurseries. I purchased one many years back and have it growing as an espalier (a tree trained with horizontal branches).

Hessle has its virtues. It’s got Yorkshire grit and will thrive in wet or cold soils where other, softer, pears will sulk.

Robust but not an overly vigorous grower, it makes a compact tree that’s easy to prune and pick. Most of all it’s a reliable cropper. Unlike some varieties that are prone to spring frosts or fruit abundantly one year but need to ‘rest’ the next, it always produces a worthwhile crop. It also has the advantage of ripening comparatively early in the season. Don’t believe the websites and nursery catalogues that claim it isn’t ready for eating until October. In my experience, the fruit usually starts to ripen in the first weeks of September.

Judging exactly when Hessle is ripe can be tricky. It’s one of those pears that go from ripeness to mush in a blink of an eye. Leave it too long and the fruits will be soft and brown at the core. But this isn’t Hessle’s only shortcoming.

Tony Chalcraft The fruit is disappointingly small. A few bites and it’s gone. The skin, a drab greenish-yellow freckled with spots, also has a chewy texture. All this would be forgivable if compensated for by flavour. Unfortunately, for me at least, this is lacking. The fruit is juicy, perhaps overly so, and has a sharp tang, especially if eaten a little under-ripe.

But there is little in the way of subtleness of flavour and certainly, none of that special pear taste offered by other varieties ready at the same time, like Williams’ Bon Chrétien.

For much of the time, Hessle was more widely cultivated large quantities of its fruit went to jam factories. Presumably, it’s a variety good for jam; I have to confess that this has never been tried. It’s certainly usable in the kitchen for other culinary purposes but its small size does make preparation time-consuming.

It’s important that varieties such as Hessle, for reasons of genetic diversity and local heritage are preserved.

Despite its flavour flaws, this is a pear from Yorkshire’s past that worth keeping alive. I’m prepared to play my part by having a Hessle tree, but one is enough.

Q. We have a garden that has a large shaded border, could you recommend some shrubs that will tolerate the shade, please?

A. There’s a surprising range of shrubs suitable for growing in the shade.

Many are woodland plants from the wild that prefer to grow away from direct sun rays. This does not mean they can survive without any light. All green-leaved plants need light to photosynthesize, some, however, are more tolerant of lower light levels than others, and it is these that are most successful when planted in the shade of trees and buildings.

Cornus Canadensis ‘Creeping Dogwood’ In late spring and early summer the starry white-bracted flowerheads of this carpeting perennial are borne above ruffs of oval leaves, red berries follow.

Aucuba Japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ The jade green shoots of this spectacular bushy shrub develop into shiny green leaves blotched with yellow, this laurel is a most reliable evergreen.

Euonymus ‘Emerald and Gold’ A low growing shrub that is evergreen crowned with feathery gold margined leaves that look bright gold from afar.

This plant is ideal as ground cover or as a specimen shrub.

Hydrangea Serrata ‘Bluebird’ This bushy shrub will be covered in violet lace-cap flowers in the summertime to late autumn, this plant dislikes dry soils.

Skimmia Confusa ‘Kew Green’ This deep green aromatic leaver is topped in spring by dense conical heads of fragrant creamy flowers: an excellent and adaptable evergreen shrub.

Sarcococca This suckering evergreen shrub forms dense clumps of upright shoots in time, clusters of tiny sweetly scented white flowers are carried in the axils of its narrow leaves in mid-winter, hence the name Christmas Box. One of my favourite plants.

Q. I have a Rhododendron and Photina Red Robin in my garden, their leaves have been eaten around the edges but I haven’t seen a pest. Could you help, please?

A. The pest is likely Vine Weevil, the biology of this particular beetle is unusual. Most beetles reproduce sexually but most Vine Weevils are females and they must reproduce parthenogenetically. Each female lays hundreds of eggs over several months during summer. The eggs are usually laid close to suitable host plants and the larvae, which hatch after about two weeks, feed for three months or more before pupating in small earthen cells in the soil. Adults, which are 7-10mm long, emerge in the autumn or spring the following year. There is only one generation a year but because of the staggered emergence of adults, there is some overlapping late winter and early spring when eggs larvae, pupae and adults may be present at the same time, especially in

greenhouses. Vine Weevils prefer Clematis, Cyclamen, Primulas, Fuchsias, Begonias, Heucheras, Tiarellas and Saxifrage plants to lay their eggs. They hide at soil level during daylight in leaf litter, loose brickwork and loose woodwork before crawling onto the plants after dark.

To control Vine Weevil numbers when repotting, keep a lookout for the larvae which are white brown heads and 10mm in length they eat the succulent roots under the crown of the plant which will eventually die if left untreated.

Also because of the lack of chemical treatments, nematodes are available from commercial suppliers. The live microscope nematodes are supplied in a carrier, which, when mixed with water, produces an active suspension of nematodes, these are then watered into infested pots where the nematodes search for the Vine Weevil larvae and enter their bodies. Once inside, the nematodes release pathogenic bacteria from their gut which kill the larvae within a couple of days, treatment is most effective when applied in late August till mid-September.

Lovely Rio has had a tough paper round and truly deserves a loving home. After being rescued from appalling conditions, he has had a long stay at the RSPCA while his previous owners were prosecuted. But now RSCPA York is proud to introduce one of the most gentle and sweetnatured of dogs. Rio is a total ‘gentle giant.’ Unfortunately, Rio suffers from arthritis, not only in hips but in his back as well, he is on pain medication which does help. He is looking for a home where he will not be taken on very long walks, he gets 3 x 15-minute walks which is all he can manage, but he does love every minute of his little adventures. Rio will need to be the only pet in the home as he does not like to be around other dogs. Return to sport following Covid-19 Leeds United FC Senior Men’s Physiotherapist and Senior Physiotherapist for Yorkshire Sports Medicine, Bill Atton, has put together some pointers for returning to sport following the initial wave of the pandemic.

Now that the government has relaxed restrictions to allow safe return to sport, we have put together a few key points to ensure you return at your best level and avoid the risk of illness and injury.

Prior to return All participants (players, coaches, spectators etc.) should check for symptoms of Covid-19. If an individual is symptomatic and/or living in a household with a possible Covid-19 infection they should remain at home and follow Government guidance.

The most common symptoms include; •High temperature (above 37.8°C).

•A new, continuous cough.

•A loss of, or change to, sense of smell or taste.

•Be aware that at any point where the game/training session allows you should be socially distanced.

•Avoid handshakes/huddles •Make time for regular hygiene breaks.

•Avoid the sharing of equipment, and if any equipment is used it should be cleaned at the earliest convenient time.

We have all been through challenging times and most of us are feeling this in one way or another in our bodies, minds, and spirits. Long weeks of not seeing those we love, not engaging in our usual social lives, and not working in our usual ways impacts our physical and mental health. Perhaps we have been ill and have had a lengthy recuperation. Perhaps we are suffering from loneliness and disconnection, or maybe we are dealing with personal grief, as well as the collective grief from these unprecedented times. Whatever our individual stories are, one thing that can bring us together and help our healing is our yoga practice.

At York Yoga Studio we have kept our classes running online throughout the shutdown to offer community, exercise, meditation, and a sense of perspective.

Students tell us that the chance to see their friends at their weekly yoga classes quickly became the highlight

of their week. In our classes, we feel the joy and support of community and are reminded that even in isolation, we remain connected to each other. And of course, the physical practice helps us keep our bodies limber and strong and our immune systems charged and healthy. Yoga is a practice for the mind and spirit as well as the body, and during these stressful times, this is where our practice sustains us. Yoga reminds us to be present in each moment, to experience each breath as a gift, and to feel a sense of gratitude for our lives.

When the world feels like it has gone mad, yoga is the tether which keeps us grounded and real and our sense of positivity and optimism intact.

We are preparing for a limited reopening at our physical studio in September, but we are retaining our online classes as well. You can choose how you carry on your yoga practice in a safe and supervised way: in-studio classes, with social distancing and hygiene protocols; strictly online, from the safety of your home; or in a blended format, with some students

present in the classroom and others online in the same class. No matter how you choose to come to classes, we respect your priorities and your boundaries.
