YORK LIFE
September the magical month Whaddup York! How are we all? Good summer? Nice holiday? Chaotic school break? Yep, good? Yeah? Oh wait a minute… who cares? Because now it is September – the single most magical and bizarre month of the year. January has new beginnings, April has showers, July has heat, but September has time travelling, pan-dimensional traits. What? Think about it… the moment 1st September rolls up your mind is cast months into the future as you suddenly realise that Christmas, and so therefore the end of the year, is just around the corner. The first day of September is like society’s wake up call, reminding us all that everything must, eventually, come to an end (and that we have to do all our Christmas shopping as soon as possible or risk being
UNPREPARED). Gasp. Take our advice: poo poo it. Seriously, when September begins try to focus on the day itself. Throw your thoughts no farther into the future than 23.59 that night. That way you’ll enter autumn in a calm and collected manner… and this issue of YLL is here to help you do that. Our columns will have you laughing, the Treasure Hunt will have you happily wandering around the city, eyes to the rooftops, and the Time Travel feature will foster in you a greater appreciation of Holgate. Meanwhile, the bustling events section will draw your interest to all the fun stuff you could be doing right now… not what Aunt Margery would like for Christmas. Best of luck, and enjoy your month! It’s Monday morning – which means it’s time to read last week’s newspapers. Well, that’s not strictly true. It’s actually time to clean out the guinea pig’s cage. But as lining his cage with old newspaper is my sole opportunity to catch up on all the news
I’ve missed during the past week, cleaning him out can take a while. Something like an entire day, to be precise. I am, of course, full of Good Intentions. Cage-cleaning is absolutely not a form of procrastination. I am a very busy person, and this job needs to be done quickly so I can get on with useful things such as sewing name-tapes into school uniform and discovering that everything is three sizes too small and needs to be replaced yesterday (cue emergency trip to the particular Circle of Hell known as Sports Direct in Davygate. I always think the escalator ought to be heading downwards on
the way in). As there are so many useful things I should be doing, I will not be distracted by the story about the apprentice bricklayer who swam
have been, and whether it compares to the German who memorably brandished his Wurst at me on a train in 1992. Nor will I start reading the Press’s list of Top Baby Names 2016 (Esme at Number Seven? Surely not) to make sure that my children’s names haven’t suddenly Become Common and need changing now, this minute, by deed poll.

naked across the Ouse this summer and offended tourists by mooning at them and performing an “indecent act” (well, that’s one way to deter them from blocking Skeldergate. It also gives an entirely different dimension to their selfie sticks). I will not waste valuable time wondering exactly which indecent act it might
I will certainly not read a restaurant review of Le Cochon Aveugle in Walmgate (excellent, so it seems. Better get saving). Nor will I wonder if the urban beach in Coppergate is still there, now that everyone is going back to school. I will not inspect a picture of a blocked drain in Fishergate. What’s this? An article on Yorkshire gin? Away with you. And I will absolutely not under any circumstances start dwelling on property porn. Driffield Terrace for £1.75 million, anyone? This activity beats even the hilarious ‘Drawing Hitler Moustaches on People in the Newspaper’ game. When Gordon Brown was PM, there was no real competition except the occasional pic of Cherie Blair. However, it was just a teeny bit dull. Now I get to choose. And the choices are endless. Lord Jezza of Corbyn is too obvious a target, so I dispatch him to the recycling box. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton? Quite tempting to put them together to fight it out in the depths of the cage but, again, a bit unimaginative. They can join Jezza in the recycling instead. Here’s a distinct possibility, though: Stephen Fry. Or could it be Wayne Rooney? Anne Robinson? A foreign dictator is always a good bet. presents himself to me. Today’s was Noel Edmonds. There is no satisfaction quite like it. Tee hee, I think to myself as I launch the piggy back into his nice clean cage. I am getting my own back on Noel Edmonds for innumerable crimes against mankind. Most notably horrid facial hair. Then my mother calls. “I’ve just seen your Daily Mail article,” she says. “Oh goody,” I reply. Hmm, I think. How nice it must be to be a Lady of Leisure and have time to sit and drink coffee and read the Mail, while your daughter slogs away at her domestic duties. “Yes. I just retrieved it from the chicken coop. I’m afraid you’re covered in chicken droppings.” I think I have got my come-uppance.

miss motivation
Dear Daphne, I just can’t get motivated to eat clean and lose weight. It’s something that I sit and feel guilty about every Sunday night after I’ve spent another weekend binge eating and not looking after myself. How can I find the motivation to want to do this for myself? Jackie, Acomb
Well, firstly you could stop beating yourself up about it. I don’t think there is a worse way on earth to spend a Sunday than regretting decisions you’ve made over the weekend. So you ate badly and now you feel rubbish. That’s totally fine. Sticking to decisions you make when you’re not hungry is a difficult road to stay on, and one that we all fall off of from time to time. The best attitude to adopt is this – okay I messed up yesterday, but today is a new day and I’m going to try my best again. Persistence is key with adopting new habits. Stick at it! You could be healthy during the week and naughty throughout the weekend and as for losing weight, do you actually need to? Check online to see if your BMI is where it should be and you might find you’re actually doing a whole lot better than you thought.
Dear Daphne, I found out my best friend has been cheating on his girlfriend with my younger sister. My younger sister also had a boyfriend too. They’ve caused a lot of pain and I can barely sit in the same room as them without wanting to kick off. He bought me a guitar to apologise which I initially accepted. The more I think about it, the more I think that I was cheap and made a bad decision accepting the ‘I’m sorry’ gift. What should I do? Anon, Fulford
girlfriend find out i crossing t him. Anon
Wow, quite the week you’ve had there Anon. What they’ve done is wrong and people often forget when cheating how much pain they can actually cause. I suggest returning the gift – Just because he bought you a present doesn’t make his actions acceptable - although it’s okay to acknowledge the kind (if not slightly ridiculous) gesture. People make mistakes and you don’t want to lose your best friend and your sister. So I suggest cooling down for a while and seeing if they actually make a serious go of this affair. If so then maybe circumstance caused them to act the way they did and you can begin to forgive what they’ve done in your own time. In the meantime a grown up conversation about why you’ll be taking some time out of the friendship needs to be had – and it’s worth noting that there are two people here that deserve a much bigger apology sometime soon…
This one all you w if he hasn probably still start a plenty of

Daphne, I want to leave my girlfriend. We’ve been together for several years and she has got two lovely children who I have grown very fond of. The trouble is I no longer love her but have been putting off breaking up with her because she doesn’t feel the same way and gets extremely upset when I try and broach the subject. I always end up apologetic and feel like I am now living a lie. Anon
Love can spring up on us at any time and yet we always seem surprised when it vacates the same way. I understand that you’ve built relationships with your partner’s children, as well as herself, and I don’t see why you need to cut off contact with them completely. It would be much less painful to see them now and again. Don’t be afraid to leave her. You can’t stay out of sympathy and deep down I’m sure she wouldn’t want you to either. Try and remain calm and kind when you break up but stay strong. The kinder the break up, the more chance you have of being able to maintain a friendship with her children afterwards.
Dear Daphne, I really fancy a bloke Workplace at work. We get on romance pretty well and he’s always happy to talk to me but he’s got a girlfriend and they seem pretty happy. How do I find out if he has any feelings for me too without crossing the line? I just can’t stop thinking about him. Anon, Wheldrake

And yes, the impulse may be to just laze around the house and avoid requests to clear out the shed or lay the floorboards in the attic... but we have another suggestion. Heworth Retired Men’s Forum meet every fortnight to listen to a different speaker imparting knowledge on a different subject each time. A great chance to meet fellow chaps and expand your horizon, pop along to the meeting on 13th September to hear Ken Humphries speak about the music of Cole Porter. You don’t need to live in Heworth to join; just to be retired and ready to have a fascinating morning at Heworth Community Centre from 10am. n To find out more, call 423277.

Just about everyone seems to be pulling together towards a common goal, but one person holds things up by their vacillation. In these circumstances, do not be delayed, and move on without them. Masculine principles like power, possession, and direct action seem to be very dominant at this time.
A very romantic and highly charged sexual energy seems to be in charge during the opening days of the month, but notes of caution start creeping in around the 10th or 12th and you might find yourself back tracking on a number of hastily made arrangements. Girls are in charge of the agendas while guys go along for the ride.
A bit of a moody and mysterious month with some conflicting emotions. Financial expenditure requires some restraint, and you need to spend some time considering your long term future options. Anything to do with savings plans and insurance schemes will be relevant – and don’t forget the sock beneath your mattress.

Not a lot of physical energy with you at this time, so pace yourself accordingly. A very heavy work load could be tiring, although extra money earned could be seen as your silver lining. Promotions and extra responsibilities seem somehow inevitable, whether you want them or not.

In the process of changing some of your targets and goals you will be given a clearer view of your own future and generate an energy which enables things to fall into place at their own pace and speed. The result is that life becomes a little bit smoother, more reassuring and predictable… but possibly just a bit more boring.
aries 21ST MAR - 20TH APR An exciting mood of expectation runs through the whole period of September and something important falls into place during the very last days. It could be said that a target is hit, and a goal has been scored. There is also quite a lot of zing and fizzle in affairs of the heart, and even the most established relationships get a buzz.
taurus 21ST APR - 21ST MAY A tricky month with a number of different issues demanding your attention. Finances take a hit around the 7th and something comes to a rather abrupt end on the 13th. It’s a good month for buying and selling,
but you may have to give before you can hope to receive. A partner may need some extra support at this time.

deemed to be of prime importance at the time. More can be achieved this month by just going with the flow, allowing events to unfold and evolve in their own time. Better this than trying to push a snowball up hill or trying to plait fog.
gemini 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN This should be a very fast month, full of social activities and dramas, and you must take care not to burn yourself out. A relationship that was “off” now appears to be “on” again, and there is important news concerning property between the 10th and the 16th. Emotional self control required between the 21st and 27th.
cancer 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL Some hard earned reward comes your way… you’ve worked for it so you can afford to celebrate a little. New job routines (and career directions) open up new financial possibilities, and despite some minor setbacks on the 4th and again on the 14th you should be more than pleased with your progress. Travel aspects on the 16th & 26th.
leo 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG Potentially a fabulous time for affairs of the heart, but there is one little bit of caution holding you back and spoiling your fun. Seriously, if I were you, I’d throw caution to the wind, do a lot less worrying and a whole lot more living. Follow your heart in all things, and have absolute faith in the power of love.

Think of Holgate, and you might automatically imagine the splendid windmill. That’s fair enough, it is pretty striking. But what you might not think about is grammar, and how the way this sentence looks on this very page in your hand was shaped by the suburb just outside of the city centre. And it’s all thanks to an American. What? Let’s delve into the history of notable Holgate exresident, Lindley Murray.
Who he?
Lindley Murray was born in Pennsylvania in 1745, a time before the USA when the colonies were still possessed by Britain. His father was a wealthy New York Quaker and merchant, but Lindley (one of twelve children!) preferred reading books to counting stock. After failed attempts to instil in him a merchant’s spirit, Lindley’s father allowed him to study law; at which he excelled. Because of his father’s close ties to the UK, and his own trips to England, Lindley was a noted monarchist, and so when the Revolutionary

uk, okay?
Following the formation of the United States, and his own failing health, Lindley decided to move to England permanently and settle in Holgate. Using his wealth from being a lawyer he purchased a big house on Holgate Road to retire to. It’s still there today, by the way; spilt up into apartments just over the road from The Fox Inn. It is from this point on in his life that Lindley began to make a true name for himself. Sitting in his summer house in his back garden, he starting to write. His first book, The Power of Religion on the Mind, drew upon his Quaker background and was an instant success, being reprinted
several times and even translated into French. After he was petitioned to write a book about grammar to be used as a teaching aid in the local Friends’ Girls School, he penned English Grammar; a book that went through fifty editions, was exported around the world, and used for decades after as the basis for ‘proper’ English grammar.
a retreat
The success of the book brought Murray yet more wealth. Being a Quaker, he was fascinated by the work of William Tuke, another Quaker who was attempting to establish The Retreat, a caring asylum off Heslington Lane (which we’ve written about in these pages in the past), in 1792. Murray invested just as much money as Tuke, believing that a humane system of treatment

In 1816 Lindley published a corrected edition of his English Grammar book, with edits, updates, and other new material. This book has since gone through 120 editions, each with thousands of copies distributed throughout the English speaking world. It is the book that the victorians held in such high regard, and is the basis of almost all our modern grammatical construction. To say that Murray was a rich man at the end of his life in 1826 is a huge understatement, yet he left his entire fortune to philanthropic projects. As well as his will instructing that money be left to the Quakers in York, other funds were directed back to America for the purchase and distribution of religious literature.

But at the turn of the 19th century Murray’s health began to deteriorate yet further, from what people now suspect to have been Post-Polio Syndrome. He could no longer speak at the Quaker Friends’ Meeting House, and by 1810 he was confined to his house. However, that house also became famous; his library was known to be huge, while his garden (as a result of his interest in botany) was said to rival Kew Gardens in London.

The magic of mistakes This month our 22 year old, NEWLY QUALIFIED NCTJ JOURNO, Krystal, talks about how all the mistakes she has made have paid off... Can you tell she made us say the NCTJ qualified bit?

I took a pretty big loan out to go on holiday once. Brilliant idea right? Applied online, no questions asked, and the next week I was on a plane to Kavos absolutely loving life and thinking about what an exciting and spontaneous future I had ahead of me. Fast forward seven days and I was crying in a train station in London because I didn’t have enough money for the train home and I was 100 percent sure my mum was going to go down for GBH when she found out. Press that tedious fast forward button again and I have finally finished paying off said loan. AND. IT. WAS. SUCH. A. DRAIN. It was literally the worst idea I’ve ever had. Well almost. GOT THAT FUNNY FELINE? Ever noticed that York is full of cats? No, not the furry kind that piddle on your car’s tyres and keep you up all night shrieking – we mean the statues. Central York is dotted with statues of cats, and we’ve prepared a treasure hunt so you can see a good chunk of ‘em. Begin on Ouse Bridge, looking towards Low Ousegate (the one with the little Tesco store on it). Walking up the street, see if you can spot not one, but two cats. These are the oldest surviving in York, having been placed there in the 1920s. One is black, while the other is a ginger, and they were placed there by the owner of what was once a grocer’s shop.
step 1
BUT WHY ARE THEY THERE?
Good question. Apart from two notable examples (which you’ll see first) most of the cat sculptures in York were placed there in the last thirty years by local architect Tom Adams. A tradition dating back centuries, model cats were often placed on houses and shops to deter rats and vermin – we suppose it saves having to fed them.
continue on to Coney Street. With your eyes to the left, see if you can see the next cat. He’s crouched down as if spying something very tasty on the other side of the street. Placed up there in the early 80s, he is one of Tom Adam’s first cat sculptures, made by Jonathan Newdick.
step 3 Carry on along Coney Street, then cross over to Lendal. Head right to the very end of the street, near to the Museum Gardens gates. This cat has a very noble pose and is referred to locally as ‘Chambers’ – there’s your clue as to where he is. It’s almost like he’s keeping an eye on traffic coming over Lendal Bridge (perhaps he used to work for the Council).
step 4
Head back down Lendal, then turn left onto St Helen's Square. Cross the square and head up Stonegate. You might feel sorry for this cat, who is perched just behind a ledge on the right side of the street. You might be able to see him (eventually), but he might not be able to see you.
We have now URRY started running our
At the top of Stonegate, turn right onto Low Petergate. Finding this next cat, who is white, should make the most sense of any in this hunt. Know what we mean?

step 7 Walk toward Colliergate... but don’t go too far along it. This cat, which appears to be checking the time, was placed there by sculptor Jonathan Newdick following the death of Tom Adams in 2005.

Celebrate everyone’s ability Although August was very much about the Olympic Games in Rio, the sporting action doesn’t stop there. From 7th September the Paralympic Games will kick off, with team GB sending 258 athletes to complete in 19 different sports. During the London 2012 Paralympic games, Team GB scooped a whopping 120 medals. The group of athletes has been challenged to beat that number this year, and with what looks like an immensely strong and capable team, there is a good chance that they will smash that target. Paralympic sports include archery, table tennis, shooting and canoeing, and also more energetic games like athletics, cycling, football, rugby, judo, rowing, swimming, and basketball amongst others. Sports fans will be well catered for, as competitions they will have seen and enjoyed during the preceding Olympic Games are slightly modified or played using different equipment. Cycling is on the rise. From the Tour de France burning through our city a couple of years ago, to the new and awesome Tour de Yorkshire, York is increasingly being considered a hub for British cycling. And you can get involved, no matter what your ability is, and it’s all thanks to Get Cycling. Get Cycling, a community non-profit company based in Fulford, sells and hires bikes of all shapes and sizes, as well as organising cycling events and even trips abroad. One of the most important things they do is run regular accessible cycling open days, where people with disabilities can have a go with specially designed and modified bikes. Immensely fun, the events also serve to inspire people to get involved in the extremely rewarding and social world of cycling. n Find out more about any upcoming events at www.getcycling.org.uk

As you might imagine being a sporting event, Yorkshire is very well represented by Team GB in the games. Leeds will be proudly watching Kadeena Cox as she goes for Gold in both the athletics and cycling competitions, whereas Bradford are being represented by Coral Batey in Wheelchair Rugby. Meanwhile, Sheffield athletes include rower Grace Clough, swimmer James Crisp, Kim Daybell for table tennis, and Antony Cotterill in regular tennis. Hull are fielding two athletes, including Chris Skelley in judo, and Doncaster, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield will also be watching their home talent perform. We wish each and every one of them (even the non-Yorkshire athletes, we suppose) the very best. Go get ‘em. Oh, and if you’re wondering where York’s Paralympians are, read on…

If you think of a sport that would definitely require two hands to excel at, rock climbing is probably top of the list. However, one athlete from York is making waves in the British Climbing scene, and she is doing so with only one arm. Sianagh Gallagher, 20, was born without her collarbone, shoulder blade and left arm. That hasn’t stopped her from not only being a leading light in the climbing world, but also being the captain of Britain’s Paraclimbing team. The only competitive climber in Europe with just one arm, Sianagh competes around the world in tournaments, and last year even bagged her first gold medal. Climbing has only recently been confirmed as a future Olympic sport, so unfortunately she won’t be going along with Team GB to Rio. But, as climbing makes its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and if Sianagh goes along to compete, there could soon be an Olympic gold medal heading back to York!

Sport report with Dan Tait Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. After the underwhelming European Championships, it is good to see proper football is back with York City returning to action in the National League. Personally I have been struggling to get particularly excited about seeing Boreham Wood, Forest Green, and Bromley on the fixture list. One supporter was a bit more energetic than me, posting on a fan forum, “Anyone know where I can get the Non-league Paper from?” to which someone rather comically replied “Bit of a long shot but have you tried a newsagent?” September’s games at Bootham Crescent include the visit of Solihull Moors on Saturday 3rd, highly fancied Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday 13th, and finally Dover on Saturday 17th. Football continues to go money mad as Man United broke the World Record transfer fee with the resigning of French International Paul Pogba, leading them to trend with the twitter handle #Pogback. Well I guess #soldfor3millionandboughtback foranembarassing89million doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. He says he has unfinished
business at Man United and the club has given him ‘positivity’ and ‘energy’. They have also agreed to give him £290,000 per week which might help too.
Five hoops
At time of writing the summer of sport is in full swing thanks to the Olympic Games. Is it just me or is any old sport getting added to the list? Women’s rugby 7s this time, and apparently Softball will be at the next games. I am hoping that the sack race and the egg ‘n’ spoon race make an appearance in the future so we all feel like we could become Olympians. As ever the opening ceremony was a bone of contention for some people. One of the most eagerly answered questions was “Are we classed as Great Britain or United Kingdom?” when contemplating whether to stay up and watch the flag bearing, seeing it trickle along in alphabetical order. The BBC came in for some criticism for the commentary and some felt, after some dubious facts, that they would have been in big trouble had Wikipedia had a fault and gone down. Still, it’s nice to see countries come together and support one another from different sports. None better
illustrated than US Gymnast Regan Smith who posted a picture on social media of her meeting NBA and Team USA Basketballer DeAndre Jordan.
Summer cricket!
One of my favourite summer past times is to go to watch Yorkshire CCC, and this year has been no different as the Tykes bid for a third consecutive County Championship title. Whilst the cricket on show may be first class, the tannoy system remains as effective as Wayne Rooney’s hair stylist. Getting the updates from the test match sounded like they were coming via a speaker under water. When complaining about it to a fellow supporter, he claimed you could hear it crystal clear…..in the toilets! The season continues in September as Yorkshire hope for a rousing finish as they take on fellow title hopefuls Durham at Headingley, beginning Tuesday 6th. Hopefully supporters can get behind them rather than give them the kiss of death like when I went recently against Warwickshire when someone shouted to Tim Bresnan “C’mon Bressy lad, stick in there” as he’s been at the crease for over an hour as Yorkshire were under the cosh but the very next ball spooned one to a welcoming fielder.

Travel agents going far! Bu
Sh
If the thought of booking flights, hotels, trips out, and food for your holiday is just a bit too much to get your head around, you’ve probably sought the assistance of a travel agent. If that agent was Yorkbased Quartz Travel Group then you really need to show your appreciation by voting for them. That is because Quartz has been nominated for the British Travel Award 2016. The prestigious accolade, for which Quartz have been nominated in the Best Local Travel Agency, Best Independent Travel Agency, and Best Travel Retailer for Customer Service categories, will be awarded following a glitzy ceremony in London in November. But the great thing about these awards is that they are voted for by the public; you can cast your vote right now.
vote now!
To help Quartz walk away from the night with as many deserved awards as they should, pop over to their website (www.quartz-travel.co.uk) right
now. At the top of the home page you’ll see some awards icons – click on those and vote away! The British Travel Awards are considered the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the travel industry, and with so many happy (and well-tanned) customers on their books, the friendly staff of Quartz are definitely strong contenders. British Travel Awards’ chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “This year there are nearly seven hundred nominations listed against 83 Award categories, and competition to win a British Travel Award will be fierce. In 2015 more than a million votes were cast to decide the winners, making the BTAs easily the largest awards programme in the
UK. voting in the 2016 Awards is now open and voters have until 30th September to show their support. Good luck to the Quartz Travel Group!”

Always going the extra mile for their clients, Quartz provide highly detailed itineraries, including pre-booked seat numbers (when possible), and even contact hotels in advance to try and get room upgrades for you. Plus, when you are on your hols, they will be available to help, 24/7, in the event of an emergency. So if they’ll be there for you, why not be there for them… and vote. n Visit www.quartztravel.com

You may have heard of venturefest, a one day festival designed to bring investors and entrepreneurs together. Taking place at York Racecourse on 16th November, the day will also be playing host to Pitchfest, a chance to pitch your business idea in direct competition with other people. If you win, not only will you bag £5000 in prize money, but you'll also receive a whole year of business support. LEGAL POSITIONS Great news for a local legal firm, after their senior director was named the new president of the Yorkshire Law Society. Peter Kay of Ware & Kay Solicitors Ltd, who not only have offices in York, but also Wetherby and Malton, took up the esteemed position in this, the society's 230th year. The second oldest law society in the country, it exists to not only promote the interests of its members but also those of the clients of solicitors in Yorkshire. Peter said: “It is a great honour to accept such a prestigious role. My aspiration for the year ahead is to raise the approval rating of solicitors and their firms in the Society’s area.” We wish him all the best. n Visit www.warekay.co.uk

Posh car gets posher
Bentley’s expensive ultra-posh SUv, the Bentayga (the Queen was the first to order one, don’t you know?), has just become even posher, after the luxury car maker released a special edition of the four-wheel drive car; one especially kitted out for Fly Fishers. Yes, if you have bought a Bentayga and were a little disappointed by the way it carried your fishing tackle as you power over farmer’s fields and through playgrounds, fret no more. The new Bentayga Fly Fishing Edition (no joke, that’s the name) has been modified by the car maker’s interior design team Mulliner to feature everything the hyper-rich fish chaser would need to maintain the impression that they are indeed rich and they do indeed like chasing fish. And hey, even if you don’t fish but would like the option to do so at some point in the future, Bentley are only asking for an additional £80,000 on top of the standard price of £160,000 for the car. No biggie.
Car makers make cars. Make sense, doesn’t it? A lot of time and effort goes into Mirror mirror on the car... WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU!?! those cars, so it’s no surprise that many car makers That is what many Japanese motorists could soon be saying, only make cars and nothing else. However, some have – after the Japanese government gave permission for mirror-less for very strange reasons – decided to go ‘off book’ from time to to be tested on their roads. The new cars (which may be new time and make... erm... other things. For example, did you know that Peugeot also make model BMWs) use cameras and monitors instead of traditional pepper mills, and Maserati make dice? They do, along with Lamborghini who also make mirrors. As the cameras have a wider field of view they could a smartphone, Ferrari who have a line of golf clothing, Bentley who also make furniture, help to eliminate the blind spot motorists experience when and Bugatti who, randomly, also make a Hookah pipe. I suppose forking out over a million seeing behind, but many people are worried because the camera pounds for one of their cars would suggest you were smoking something, arf arf! But our system is complex. Mirrors never break down, do they – even favourite has to be Porsche who are also in the business of making children’s bobsleighs. when cracked. property of the month Technically that should read ‘Properties of the month’ as this time we’re looking at a single large house that has been subdivided into three spacious properties in the Huntington Road area. Brand new to the market are these three individually designed luxury lifestyle properties, comprising of one executive and versatile two storey, two bedroom house, with home office or study, and also two exceptional two bedroom properties with gardens. Thoughtfully developed, these homes optimise space and light in a contemporary setting. The two bedroomed, bay fronted, executive home has versatile accommodation over two floors. An inviting atmosphere is created by the spacious open plan living/dining/kitchen area, offering the flexibility of a choice of settings for dining and living. The property is complemented with two double bedrooms, a home office/study, a house bathroom with separate shower, and a separate cloakroom on the ground floor. This property will appeal to professionals and executives who enjoy city centre living, who also possess the desire for versatility and internal space. The property benefits

With open plan living, completely redeveloped to include uPvC double glazing, Worscester Bosch gas heating, new designer kitchens and bathrooms, LED lighting, and flooring throughout, both are ready to move into right now. The properties benefit from a private rear garden with patio and also designated off street parking. Both have a guide price of £230,000.

On average, we glorious Britons have to use our heating systems for eight months of the year. We don’t need to tell you, but that can cost a lot, and also leave each household with a huge carbon footprint. If you’d like to upgrade to something better, Fischer Future Heat can help. Their modern electric heating systems, designed and built in Germany, are clean, efficient, attractive, and far better for the environment. Using automatic controls, a Fischer system will keep your home at a comfortable 21 degrees, even in the ‘bleak midwinter’. Almost 30,000 homes in the UK have already made the switch to electric heating systems, so to find what benefits they are already enjoying, call Fischer Future Heat on 07539 682817.

The older I get, the more distressed I become when faced with bad customer service. When your day job is to look after the wellbeing of your clients, I just cannot understand how some people manage to get it so wrong. After a meal recently when visiting a local restaurant, it was time to reimburse the establishment so, as is usual these days, I pulled out a card to do the necessary. Rather worryingly the card failed to process, at which point you might have thought the waitress would have had some soothing words to ease us through a potentially embarrassing situation…

WHO IS ALWAYS RIGHT?
MY FAULT?
Why then would she choose to utter the words, “It’s probably your card”? I laugh now when I think back, but at the time I was rather taken aback. I suggested she maybe give it another try and this time it went through without problem, so maybe it was not my card after all. No apology was proffered so imagine my amazement when, before handing over my receipt, she had a quick conversation with a colleague and then informed me they had got the bill slightly wrong and we should have paid more! Before the impending explosion, Mrs Todd stepped in to point out that with the tip already settled we had still overpaid them and I was guided towards the exit for a medicinal pint. Fortunately I think most small businesses understand the need for great customer service; it’s what sets us apart from some of our national competition and hopefully brings repeat visits and positive endorsements through word of mouth. Equally fortunate for my health is the fact that modern card machines are usually very reliable!n Visit www.htodd.co.uk

They have one of the highest customer retention rates in the whole organisation, along with a host of glowing testimonials.
Central to their success has been their commitment to instilling a culture of customer service through every aspect of their business. Speaking of their success, Dez said, “Our success can largely be attributed to our passion for customer service and our fantastic staff. We’re really proud of the business we’ve built and thrilled to be finalists in the bfa HSBC awards.”

As the nights being to draw in and it gets a little colder, it can feel like there’s little for the avid gardener to do. veterans know all too well that there are still plenty of green thumbed activities to undertake. autumn prep

Protect your pond from falling debris and protect your fish from those pesky herons and cats with netting. Hedges and conifers can be cut at the end of the growing season, but make sure you don’t do it when foliage is wet – it increases the chance of a box blight infection. Create somewhere to put all of that debris off of your lawn. Leaves, grass cuttings, plants and any uncooked fruit and veg skins can be put on your compost heap. Look at that lovely fertile compost you’ll have ready for spring.
Any young or delicate plants that are potted should be brought inside as the weather gets less kind.
Just kidding! Now is the time to plant fruit trees, but don’t expect to see the fruits of your labour for about five years.
Yep, evergreens and conifers will happily establish roots throughout the warmer autumn days, it will help them cope in winter and sprout in spring.
Not just used for deterring those pesky vampires, garlic also tastes great in food… and it isn’t the only veg you can grow through winter. Onions and broad beans are also up for a winter session.
Rid your lovely lawn of moss and debris, improve drainage and then feed your lawn with an autumn fertiliser. You’ll thank us later. for more information visit www.bbc.co.uk/gardening.

s p r i n g f lo Wering the heat of the summer months has b u l b s After started to cool, and the long lazy evenings are becoming shorter (some of the extremely organised amongst us may even be planning Christmas shopping), the last thing on anybody’s mind will be spring colour in the garden. However, now is exactly the right time to start planning your tubs, beds and borders. Bulbs can make a beautiful addition to any garden, either in an existing border or planted in strategically placed tubs. Many people don’t bother with bulbs because they think they are a nuisance and hard work, but bulbs will give years of pleasure without needing more than minimal maintenance. Some bulbs may need lifting seasonally, or you may just prefer to not have them in the garden whilst they are dying down. Plant a number of bulbs into an aquatic basket (which has slits all around the sides and the bottom) and plunge the whole basket under ground, then they will grow happily and you can lift the whole thing later to move them. This also gives a greater impact when planting bulbs in clumps.
(light)bulb moment Bulbs are also fun for children to grow, with some giving quite quick results. For example Colchicum can be grown without compost. Simply place your bulb on a saucer on the windowsill and watch it grow and flower. An old favourite for children is the Hyacinth which again doesn’t need compost. Fill the bottom of a hyacinth glass with water and
place the bulb in the top, as it grows the roots will come out and find the water. Crocus are another bulb with quick results. Three varieties will flower in autumn: Crocus Kotschyanus Zonatus, Crocus Sativus and Crocus Speciosus. A popular present to give at Christmas is a planted bowl of Hyacinths. Narcissus can also be in flower before Christmas, but it isn’t just a case of planting them very early; you have to make sure that you have purchased the correct bulbs. There are varieties that have been specially ‘prepared’ for early indoor flowering. Hyacinth ‘Pink Pearl’
and Hyacinth ‘Delft Blue’ are well known, while Narcissus ‘Paperwhite’ are also prepared for early flowering.
gift-giving It’s not just your garden you could be planning; bulbs are a great gift idea for friends and family. They come ready wrapped in boxes or bags so you don’t even have to do that. Amaryllis bulbs make good Christmas gifts and can last for years. So go down to your local garden centre today and take a look at the amazing colour range that could be flowering in your garden next spring.

Q.
i have grown day lilies in my garden for over five years, but this year they have failed to open after the flower bud has formed. could you please help?
a. I was asked
this question in the nursery just last week, but didn’t know the answer. So I turned to my favourite book to see what was going on – hey, you’re never too old to learn! The flower buds of day lilies (Hemerocallis) fail to open normally in early summer, remaining inflated and distorted, and containing many small white midge larvae up to about 3mm in length. Damage is particularly severe on yellow-flowered varieties and reaches a peak by late June. Adult midges emerge from the soil from May onwards and fly up onto Hemerocallis flower buds to lay eggs. Larvae develop within the buds and, when fully fed, fall onto the soil where they overwinter. There is only one generation per year, which is why infestations naturally decline after early July. You should pick up affected buds as soon as they appear and destroy them, preferably by burning. Spraying
with a contact insecticide at the time of adult emergence may prevent infestation, but timing is critical as the adult midge must be killed before the females lay their eggs. We have some larger borders that lack colour from mid-summer onwards. Could you please recommend some perennials, as I have some shrubs already in place? Many of the perennials that flower in the middle of summer do so over a long period, taking advantage of the available warmth and sunlight. The following selection include some plants that begin flowering in early summer, and others that continue blooming into early autumn, earning their place in the garden by extending the period of interest. • aster ‘king george’ is an excellent late summer perennial, with clumps of erect, leafy stems topped by broad, flattened heaps of yellowcentred violet-purple daisy flowers. • coreopsis ‘moonbeam’. In summer, a profusion of lemon-yellow flower heads cover this low, bushy plant. Slender stems branch to bear finely cut leaves, ideal for the front of a border. • crocosmia ‘lucifer’. A bright and cheerful perennial, it forms a clump of robust, sword-shaped leaves. It’s arching, branched spikes of brilliant red, late-summer flowers are good for cutting.
• lavatera ‘rosea’. Easily one of the most popular and reliable mallows, forming a large woody based, semi-evergreen bush, covered with deep pink flowers during summer. • monarDa ‘beauty of cobham’. Flowering during late summer and early autumn, this lovely plant bears crowned heads of pink flowers, with purple bracts that turn a warm brown in winter. • salvia ‘mainacht’. velvety dark indigo-blue flowers with purple bracts, borne in long spikes on leafy, four angled stems. • verbena ‘bonariensis’. Bees, butterflies, and hoverflies are all attracted to the delicate clusters of tiny, lilac-purple flowers that crown the tall, branching stems. It seeds freely. Here are a few more… Campanula lactiflora ‘Loddon Anna’, centranthus ‘ruber’, anemone ‘September charm’, hemerocallis ‘stella de oro’, kniphofia ‘Royal standard’, and veronicastrum ‘virginicum’. Most of these perennials carry the Royal Horticultural Society’s award of garden merit. All the best!

TONY CHALCRAFT GIvES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.
it’s shoWtime! Late summer and early autumn are the time for the annual fruit and vegetable shows. Many gardeners grow for the show bench; in fact some grow for this rather than the kitchen. The aim is not necessarily to have tasty and nutritious produce, but rather perfect, uniform and blemishfree specimens to catch the judge’s eye and secure that coveted first prize certificate. York has its fair share of traditional fruit and vegetable shows. You may know of one or two, and perhaps even put in a few entries taken home a few prizes. Many of the shows are staged by village societies or clubs, or allotment associations, and have been running for years.
held at Askham Bryan College on 4th September, has nearly 50 classes for fruit and vegetables. Further details can be found on the Society’s website at www.ancientsocietyofyorkflorists. co.uk Although I’ve had the odd dalliance with traditional fruit and vegetable shows, somehow winning a prize for the biggest marrow or the shiniest and reddest tomatoes doesn’t appeal. I grow fruit and vegetables because I want to have nutritious home grown food and also because I want to enjoy the fresh flavours and tastes you simply can’t get with shop-bought produce.
floWer poWer We also have the shows organised by the Ancient Society of York Florists, the world’s oldest horticultural society, founded in 1768. Despite its title, the Society’s shows aren’t restricted to flowers. The September show, to be
getting organic For the last few years I’ve taken part in a fruit and vegetable show with
a difference; one organised by York Organic Gardeners Association. The difference is not only that the produce should be grown according to organic principles (there are no strict rules, but entries should be unsprayed and cultivated in an environmentally friendly way), but that judging is based on taste and flavour rather than size and appearance. In many ways the Taste and Flavour Show is like a traditional fruit and vegetable show with categories or ‘classes’ for different types of fruit and vegetables, plus a few for the likes of flowers, bakes, jams and pickles. All entries however, even the garlic, chilli peppers, and potatoes (only these are cooked), are tasted raw by a panel of judges. Prizes are awarded for each class primarily according to flavour. Unless an entry looks really unappealing and moth eaten it is the one that tastes best that wins.
shoW time! This year’s show, which is supported by York Food Festival and Edible York, will be held at Brunswick Nursery, Appleteon Road, Bishopthorpe, on Saturday 17th September. There are 43 different classes, 26 for vegetables, six for fruit, and others for flowers and produce. A schedule and further details can be viewed at www. yorkorganicgardenersassociation. org.uk. You can enter by turning up with your tasty produce between 10am and 12noon on the day (no need to pre-register). Judging is between 12noon and 2pm, and the show opens for public viewing at 2pm. Prize-giving is at 3pm after which there’s even an opportunity for everyone to taste the entries! If you grow some tasty fruit and vegetables why not enter a few? Remember it doesn’t matter what they look like, it’s the taste that counts.

lightbulb moment Beningbrough Hall has been stunning visitors for a whopping 300 years this year. To celebrate, the National Trust, who now look after the stately home just north of the city, are attempting to plant a staggering 300,000 ower bulbs to create a new 'Ha-Ha Walk' (which is no joke. Tee hee!). But, they need your help. If you would like to literally muck in and leave a owering legacy in the grounds, get to the house during the weekends of September, 10.30am-5pm, and let the staff know you're ready to plant. There's 100,000 bulbs still to be put in the earth, so get cracking, eh? Find out more at www. nationaltrust.org.uk/beningbrough

TOOTHBRUSH TANTRUMS
RESEARCH
As seven o’clock approaches I become an avid clock watcher: it’s nearly teeth brushing time. On an ideal evening Shay is asleep by eight o’clock after the bed time battles of jammies, bath time, and teeth brushing. The other activities pass by without too much fuss, but my little boy isn’t a fan of foreign objects in his mouth – well not when it’s a toothbrush anyway. There’s usually a little wrestle, and exchange of toddler banter, but eventually he comes round. But we didn’t half go through the motions when we first started. We struck gold when we found a toothpaste Shay liked the taste of. He’s a fan of the Strawberry one from Boots and pretending toothbrushes are aeroplanes.
Naturally, like we mums do – I’ve spent nights on the computer researching what’s best for his little gnashers. The NHS website is particularly useful. They recommend using a smear of toothpaste for under threes and a pea sized amount for under sixes. Daily morning and evening brushes should be done and gradually we should try to do our children’s teeth more thoroughly. They do acknowledge that not all little ones like having their teeth brushed (you don’t say!), but persistence is key. Eventually I tried to turn brushing time into a game and it worked alongside the strawberry toothpaste. Whoever you are, thank you for creating strawberry toothpaste. Amen.
NO RUSH WITH THE BRUSH The easiest way to clean those pearly whites is to get your young ‘un to sit on your lap with their head tilted back. Brush teeth in small circles, covering all surfaces and encourage your child to spit the toothpaste out afterwards. It’s no longer
recommended to rinse with water as this washes away the fluoride. Shay and I are still in the co-brushing stages. But if you’re little one is slightly older the NHS says that they will still need supervising to make sure they aren’t doing anything too weird like eating toothpaste straight from the tube. From the age of seven, we can lay off the supervision, provided we reckon they’re doing a good enough job on their own. Right, go and ‘brush up’ on these facts.

Since 1988 Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools have been encouraging young people to step out into the limelight and unleash their potential. Clearly they are doing something right, as almost 30 years later, and with over 600 schools across the country, Stagecoach is getting a new logo. The two crossing spotlights represent the organisation's intent to invest in both theatre skills and life skills, and that is just what new pupils will get when they sign up in York. Principal Sally Thrussell says, “Our teachers have always encouraged their classes to embrace possibilities and take on new challenges, but over time the challenges we face as a society have changed. Today we need to help every child to unlock their potential by giving them creative courage for life.” n To find out more, visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/york

Here's a nice little story about a group of York volunteers getting recognised for their hard work. After the Friends of Huntington Library assisted phone company Talk Talk at a recent event, the telecoms giant decided to say thank you by presenting the group with a brand new iPad. Maybe the team will use it to collectively work on their Angry Birds high scores, but maybe also to help them organise future events and to promote the library. Either way, well done to the friends, and to find out more about what they do, give the library a call on 552669.
The York Common Good Trust, a group that gives grants and donations to charities in and around the city, is welcoming applications from local organisations working for the benefit of people in York. If you work to help people, either as a charity yourself, or as part of a group that helps to raise funds, or organises activities and events for others, The York Common Good Trust could help you. Recently donations were made to charities Lollipop and Carecent, and also to the York Early Music Festival. n If you feel like you could benefit, make an application (or ask for further details) to: Charles Walker, YCGT, 54 Bootham, York YO30 7XZ.

As well as their GP services, the team also includes a children’s doctor, Consultant Pediatrician Dr Guy Millman. Guy, who has worked at York Hospital for 12 years, can help in areas such as feeding issues, constipation, abdominal pain, newborn infants, and complications of prematurity, as well hearing loss and metabolic disease. He is also happy to discuss medical problems in unborn babies. n To book to see Guy for a Saturday appointment, call 631815 or visit www.stonegatemedical.co.uk

If you’ve ever seen a beautiful piece of jewellery and thought that anything so perfect must have been made by magical beings and forged by dragon fire, think again. Although we applaud your imagination and belief in magic, it is in fact you who could be creating stunning items of jewellery… if you sign up to the York School of Jewellery. The school, which is based in Fulford, is staffed by talented instructors with over 45 years of combined experience teaching jewellery making, silversmithing, and design. Have the run of three superbly equipped bespoke workshops, which
include specialist enamelling kilns, jewellery specific photographic equipment, and hundreds of silversmithing stakes. The classes are very relaxed, with an emphasis on health and safety. Great fun, and the perfect way to meet new people with similar interests, the York School of Jewellery has full disabled access, and is a great way to explore a new hobby, gift an experience to a friend, or hone your skills and craft in order to start your own business. n To find out more about the courses on offer, visit www.york-schoolof-jewellery.co.uk or call 674767.
snoWy & harriet. Snowy was kept in such appalling conditions with his hutch being so small he could not move. Due to this his muscles were damaged, but with physio and TLC he is improving on a daily basis. Meanwhile Harriet was a stray and was slightly grumpy and lonely so the home paired her up with Snowy and they bonded straight away.
“Follow the child” was Dr Maria Montessori’s advice, and it continues to form the basic principle of Montessori childcare a century later. There is no greater place to see that in action than at the York Montessori nurseries in Fulford and Strensall. Creating inspiring and fun environments, inside and outside, the friendly and experienced staff work to encourage each child’s sense of exploration. Both nurseries have wonderful facilities and outside spaces, with each and every resource available to the children introducing them to an essential concept that their life will need. By choosing what to do themselves, with support from the staff, the wee sprogs will find that York’s Montessori nurseries boast a fun and enthusiastic environment – and so will you! n To find out more, visit www.yorkshiremontessorinursery.co.uk
charlie. This lovely cat came to the home after his owner sadly passed away. They are desperate to see this beautiful cat happy again in a loving home. Charlie is not used to being around children so we feel he would be best suited to either an adult only home or a home where any children are older teenagers. He could possibly live with another cat.

A home from home
Local, family-run, and one of the last remaining independently owned care homes in the city, Fulford Nursing Home continues to tick all the right boxes. A permanent fixture on the caring scene in York since 1990, Fulford Nursing Home offers residents a real home from home experience, with a heavy emphasis on love, friendship, and respect. It is no surprise then, that the home scores so incredibly well when compared to other care facilities across the city and beyond. Earlier this year, following the flooding, Hannah Whitehead moved into the home. Her daughter, Linda, said of the move: “The staff at Fulford Nursing Home have certainly changed my mum's views on care. She has found them, from the nursing staff to the catering team, to be extremely wonderful. In her words, “Everyone is so kind and helpful.” She has been given a new lease of life!” Recently nominated for a Small Business of the Year award – the only care home on the list – Fulford Nursing Home continues to go from strength to strength. Residents enjoy regular open days, sandcastle competitions (wow!), weekly motivational classes, impromptu BBQs, flower arranging, internet surfing, art classes, and even the odd Elvis tribute singer! You name it; Fulford Nursing Home has done it and will keep on doing it. n To find out more, visit www.fulfordnursinghome.co.uk

Cyclists are being urged to sign up to the British Heart Foundation’s Heart of York Bike Ride on 11th September to help raise money for life saving research. The event will see around 300 cyclists ride through the streets of York to help support the BHF’s fight against heart disease, taking on either a 22 or 40 mile circular route through the city and into the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
It's happening. Some 17 years after most other people start to learn, I recently began my studies into the arts of the motor vehicle. Yes, I'm learning how to drive. A car, that is. Not a point. I can drive home any number of points. Just like this one. Boom. You'll be happy to hear that it is going well, and that neither I, nor any other road user or pedestrian, has yet to be maimed. This is partly due to my instructor, who, as well as being rather good at drive-teaching, also has a set of pedals by his feet. Granted, it's a bit annoying that he keeps slamming on the brakes just when I'm about to show him the manoeuvrers I've learnt while
practising on Grand Theft Auto on the Xbox, but it's nice to know he's paying attention.
clutching at straWs However fierce my enthusiasm is, I have come across a few niggles with cars that I wanted to raise here with you; a reader who may or may
not possess the ability to drive. First off, what's the deal with the clutch? Seriously, surely cars could just do without it? You have two feet, yet there are three pedals down there; one for go, one for stop, and one to confuse the crap out of the dedicated yet stubborn learner. I realise you can get automatic cars, but they are very popular in America; a country that is possibly about to vote a six foot Oompa Loompa into the White House, so no thanks. Secondly... blind spots. “Oh yeah, there is a part of the road that you can never see. Sorry about that.” Fix it then – get better mirrors or something, or at least a few cameras on your car so YOU CAN SEE ALL THE WAY AROUND YOU. It's like constantly driving in those blinkers they put on horses to stop them getting distracted, yet there's no danger of me walking off the trail to eat some dandelions.
“... it’s a bit annoying that he keeps slamming on the brakes.”

Also, the car my instructor has is a pretty flash, brand new, BMW thing. When you reverse a screen springs to life on the dashboard showing you what's behind, and to start the engine you push a button. To get going, you don't immediately hit the gas, either, as the engine is so fancy that just releasing the clutch makes you move forward. I relayed all this to my wife after my first lesson and she didn't believe me. “Have you really had a driving lesson, Howard? Or were you just standing in the middle of the road pretending? Ha, idiot!” I'm also quite shocked to learn how long it will take. Apparently there is a 16 week wait in York for the test itself, and that can only be booked after you've passed your theory. I joked that that test was actually about conspiracy theories, and listed a few I had about 9/11 and the Tories, but the instructor didn't laugh. Nor did he guffaw when I suggested he'd be out of a job soon once all new cars are designed to drive themselves. You can see now why I have no friends.

puZZling But, apart from all that, I'm really rather enjoying it. I think knowing how to drive a car will complete my 'Adult Jigsaw', as my inability has left a gaping hole in what should normally be a complete picture. When I say Adult Jigsaw, I don't mean a 3000-piece puzzle of a picture of some boobs, okay, but rather the little things that go together to differentiate a grown-up form a two year old. It starts with the proficient use of a toilet, and ends with knowledge of mortgages and interest rates and stuff. Or learning how to drive a car, in my case. Anyway, wish me luck, yo. Hopefully soon I'll be able to drive the kids about by myself, go on long soul-searching journeys, and also finally leave my wife. Ha! Look at that – joking about me leaving my wife in a column that goes out to everyone in York and that her friends read! Ha! That'll prove I'm not making it all up. Bye!

health & beauty for you
f l e s r u o y r o f Time
We hear from Laurie Prime of York Yoga Studio on how a bit of ‘me time’ is vital to our health and happiness.
Taking care of others is like exhaling. Taking care of yourself is like inhaling... For many of us, looking after others is as natural a part of our life as breathing. We raise our children, love and care for our spouses and our homes, give our all to our jobs, our families, our friends, and neighbours. We volunteer our time to worthy causes, we do favours for others, and we care about what happens in the world. And this is wonderful; this selfless support to others is a hallmark of our humanity. But all this giving does come at a cost.... to you! In yoga terms, all the giving is like exhaling, but if you never stop to inhale, to nourish and care for yourself, you will soon run out of breath, out of energy. That will not be helpful to anyone. So how can you stop, take a breath, and restore your own power? Clearly you need to eat well and to sleep, to nourish and rest the body. But we also need to take care of our minds and our spirits, and to give our bodies the kind of exercise that replenishes and restores, and for these purposes nothing is better than yoga.
Tune out to tune in
Giving yourself an hour away from all the responsibilities of your life is an important step in taking care of yourself. In your yoga practice you learn to tune into the messages of your body, to listen to your breath and to bring steadiness and calm to the mind. This is restorative in the deepest sense of the word, returning you to the essence of yourself. The mindful stretching and breathing awakens your muscles and organs, bringing vitality and energy to the body. In your yoga practice, you learn to stay focused on the present moment, bringing a sense of perspective to
the pressures you face in your daily life. A regular yoga practice gives you time to really notice the nuances of your body and your mind and this awareness helps you to really feel alive and present. This truly is the pause that refreshes! At York Yoga studio, we offer classes in a wide variety of levels and styles so that you can find the practice that will give you the time to take a deep breath....

FROM LIFETHREATENING TO LIFE-CHANGING Being told by a doctor that you either need to lose weight or lose your life must be scarily sobering. That is just what local mum of four Sue Hayes was told after being admitted to hospital with several weightrelated problems. Her solution was to join Slimming World, and it worked... as she soon shifted a whopping six and a half stone! Sue said: “Enough was enough. I knew I had to act as my quality of life had become non-existent. I was so ashamed of my appearance, and walking left me panting for breath and in immense pain as I was morbidly obese. I avoided family activities as I felt physically and mentally drained. My anxieties about

joining a weight loss class were unfounded, as I was met by warm, friendly, caring, and compassionate members. There was no judgement, no discrimination, and no humiliation. My weight was kept completely confidential and even my target weight was mine to choose. I love Slimming World so much, that I now run my own group on Tuesday in Acomb at 7pm! n Call 07543 826585

ASK THE EXPERT
t h e s e c r e t t o yo u t h f u l s k i n Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, offers methods to keep your skin looking youthful and radiant retriDerm anD vitamin a When skin begins to age, it’s important to adopt an anti-ageing regime that can combat the harsh effects of time. Aiding rejuvenation and tackling the signs of ageing is completely achievable with a little help. The best treatments help stimulate and replenish many of your skin’s natural qualities. Retriderm harnesses the qualities of Retinol, a naturally available form of vitamin A that can be found in our diet and in our own bodies. The unique, patent serums optimise the availability of retinol that can get to work in our skin, while minimising irritation. Skin looks and feels great after the intensive 24 weeks programme. You can expect to see smoother skin with fewer lines and wrinkles and a brighter, more youthful complexion. The programme is designed to get maximum results from Retriderm™, a clinically proven range that uses vitamin A to regenerate skin. The first phase of the programme gives your skin a chance to acclimatise
to the products before stepping up to an intense four week period to really tackle those tell-tale signs of ageing. You’ll then step back down and settle into a regime that will enhance the results that you’ll have already seen, and that you can maintain over time.
obagi vitamin c Sun worshipers can often see the signs of ageing sooner than others. Overtime Uv damage, environmental factors, and natural ageing will take their toll. But sun damage alone can cause wrinkles, noticeable changes in skin texture, reduced elasticity, and hyper pigmentation (discolouration). Free radicals – tiny, unstable oxygen molecules that are naturally present in our environment – also cause skin damage. To correct and prevent the sign of damage and ageing, it is important to incorporate a topical anti-oxidant into your daily routine. Daily use of topical anti-oxidents can: • Neutralise free radicals to prevent future skin damage • Help correct signs of sun and environmental damage, including brown spots and rough and uneven skin tone • Revitalise skin by stimulating collagen
production and increasing elasticity • Result in lighter, brighten and softer skin Obagi's line of vitamin C products is formulated with L-ascorbic acid to help defend against the visible signs of skin aging. vitamin C is “The Most Important Skin Antioxidant” vitamin C has many useful benefits: • Helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles • Calms inflammation • Brightens skin • Retains moisture PROFESSIONAL-C PEPTIDE PRODUCTS CAN PROvIDE vISIBLE SIGNS OF IMPROvEMENT WITHIN 1 WEEK.
• The majority of users felt their skin looked brighter • 75% of users stated that they prefer the feel of the products over their current products • 83% of users stated they would recommend the products to a friend • A majority of users appreciated these improvements in their skin: • Had a youthful radiance • Felt smooth • Looked and felt firmer With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service.

We have the solution for that. Obviously, its food… but what we’re enthusing about today is no ordinary food, because from the moment you walk through the door at Chiquito you can expect a warm welcome, a lively atmosphere, and (most importantly) a burst of fantastic flavours. The restaurant at Clifton Moor has recently had a fresh new renovation, capturing the very essence of all things Tex Mex, together with a vibrant and laidback fiesta feeling. The menus are packed with Mexican and American dishes to suit all tastes – from fans of the mild, to lovers of the wild! And trust us, there’s no better place to spice things up than at Chiquito, as their dishes are prepared by a highly skilled and trained kitchen team using fresh ingredients, packed full of flavour, to really tantalise your taste buds. Or, you know, set them on fire, should you wish.
om nom Feast on sizzling specials, hot fajitas, or Mexican favourites for foodie adventures. And of course if you need a touch of help or inspiration (we would, as our only experience of Mexico is that cartoon mouse who can run really fast) just ask one of the friendly and knowledgeable team members about what gets their mouth watering! Just try and keep it to the food, eh? Chiquito also boasts a wide range of tequilas and over 60 different cocktails. With such a huge choice on offer, the restaurant has a skilled bar team on hand to toss mixers and generally be as impressive as Tom Cruise in that film where he makes fancy drinks. What’s that called…? Cuisine? So grab your sombrero and book your table today. n Call 477900.
That’s just what you can get this month at Ed’s Easy Diner at vanguard Shopping Park. The retro eatery serves the finest of 1950s American food, as well as a few traditional favourites, and is a great place to unwind and relax, either while taking a break from shopping, or for an evening meal. Although that sounds pretty nice in itself, we have some even better news: how does 50% off your food bill sound? With the fifties tunes playing on the jukebox, the friendly staff, and the much cheaper meal you’ll be knocking back, it’ll almost be like you’re actually in 1955! Find the voucher in Ed’s Easy Diner advert in these pages, and take along with you when you dine. n To find out more, and to peruse the menu, visit www.edseasydiner.com
