Ah, yes. Welcome to York on a Friday night.
There they are, cackling and screeching and trip-trapping their way from the station to goodness-only-knows-where (I suspect it’s the poor old Premier Inn, which doesn’t deserve this fate. Especially not when they looked after my stolen bicycle the other weekend, though that’s a whole other story).
Or, in fact, on a Friday lunchtime. For the weekend starts early for hen parties. I know this not because I have ever been to a hen party. As it happens, I have managed to get through my entire life thus far without even being invited to one. I evidently hang around with the wrong type of people. No: I know this because I tend to be cycling down Blossom Street on a lunchtime, on my way to do highly useful and/or worthy things that don’t involve little wheely cases or
If you don’t know what day of the week it is – which I mostly don’t – this sight does at least act as a useful reminder. But what, I wonder, are they trundling in those little rumbly cases? It surely can’t be clothes, as they seem to think said items are an optional extra. And the larger they are, the
more scantily they are clad. It can’t be plastic tiaras or ‘L’ plates, as those are the two things that they are all wearing. Well, those and the dreaded sashes emblazoned with “Bride to Be”, “Gloria’s Hen Party” or “Girls On Tour”. The latter is arguably the most bothersome of these declarations, not least as said Girls appear to have an average age of around 155. Age cannot wither her, but extreme tanning apparently can. No: I can only imagine that those little cases contain inflatable… appurtenances. Well, that’s definitely what I’d take with me for two nights in York.

that engages in this strangely tribal behaviour. Oh no. The men are at it, too. On the face of it, they are less egregious than their female counterparts (and I don’t mean egregious in its sixteenthcentury sense). After all, they don’t tend to march up from the station wearing budgie-smugglers, pink feather boas and “Husband to Be” sashes. There are, it’s true, those groups who dress up as superheroes or women, but we can ignore them because they are evidently not taking it quite so seriously.
Of course, it’s not just the female of the species

Leaving aside costumes, the ordinary Stag just manages to be badly dressed with (inflatable) knobs on. Open shirts are clearly flammable polyester, trousers are slightly shiny, shoes are brown, and socks appear to be de trop. They are distinguished from race-goers only by the lack of jackets and York Racecourse tags. Hair, or lack of it, is to these men what clothes are to the women. Each pack has a clear leader: a small, bald, strutting man with an extremely loud voice. Behind him are a couple of other baldies, slightly less strutty but also loudly spoken. And behind them is a gaggle of foot-soldiers, all apparently completely interchangeable. The Shouty Baldy at the front is the one who directs them from one pub to the next; he’s the one who thinks it’s clever to bellow abuse at middle-aged women quietly going about their business on bicycles. Though I suppose if you’re a middleaged woman, you ought to know that if you cycle up Micklegate at going-home time on a Friday or Saturday, you stand a pretty good chance of encountering Shouty Baldiness.
YORK LIFE
“Each pack has a clear leader: a small, bald, strutting man with an extremely loud voice.” Fortunately I have never witnessed the carnage which presumably follows the initial screeching and shouting. I last went out on a Friday night in about 1989, and now spend my evenings engaged in sedate pursuits like looking at the Wombell’s catalogue. Buying a feather duvet on eBay from a nice lady in Haxby is as near as I get to feather boas. But if stags and hens alike are already staggering at cup-of-tea time, I wouldn’t like to imagine what it’s like in the Punch Bowl at midnight. The next morning, there are clues in the likes of Tanner Row. I won’t go into these unpleasantries, though my children, when young, used to be amused by them on their way to school. They were also amused by the sight of a stag in a state of considerable undress on the way back from the Minster on one occasion. I averted my eyes, as their description of this sight was already more than I could reasonably cope with. Compared to that, the sight of a polyester-clad baldy is pretty benign. Ah well. Jenny and the team are offering a completely free course for ladies who’d like to learn how to sing in harmony. SANTA’S LITTLE HELPERS Santa’s elves are busy making presents for children – so he needs you to help him spread the Christmas joy throughout our community! It isn’t officially the Christmas season until you’ve seen the Minster Lions’ famous Rocking Rudolph sleigh, complete with Santa, bringing happiness and joy to the children (and adults!) of York. Well, it’s coming to that time of year – and this magical group of people need you to join them. In case you missed our shout out in our October issue, The Minster Lions are looking for volunteers who would like to join them (and Santa) in collecting donations. And it’s a win-win – part of the funds raised will go right back to you, so can fund your own project! If you love Christmas and want to make a real difference, then this is definitely the group for you. n Email info@minster-lions.org.uk or call 890144 to get involved. You must be over 16.

A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME When it comes to sports that have ‘ball’ in them, how many do you reckon you can think of? Hmm, we’ve got football, netball, basketball… erm… ooh, volleyball… baseball… that it? Of course not. We’ve forgotten korfball! No, we’ve not made that one up. It’s a real sport – and it’s arrived in York! Dutch word ‘korf’ actually means ‘basket’ in English – but while korfball has similarities to basketball, it’s very different in several ways. For starters, teams have mixed genders of four men and four women. Also, dribbling isn’t allowed in korfball, so tactics are very different to that of basketball. Fancy giving it a try? Look no further than the York Korfball Club. Based at the Vale of York Academy, the club is open to all abilities – you just have to be 16 or over. n For more information on how to join, contact Graham Smith on yorkkorfball@gmail.com, or visit their Facebook page @KorfYork.
GET IN LINE Line dancing’s got a bit of a reputation behind it – that it’s all ‘yeehah’ and old-fashioned. However, in reality it’s probably not what you expect. While there’s certainly a good chunk of country music in there to keep to its traditional roots, music styles actually vary from chart pop to Irish, funk and disco to R’n’B. And don’t worry, you don’t need to dress in cowboy gear – although you can if you want to! And there are plenty of opportunities to get involved here in York. Rene’s Revellers is are made out of dancing duo David and Rene – and they run three classes each week to suit all ages, lifestyles and abilities. You’ll learn new routines each week, and enjoy dancing the ones you already know. They also run social events where you can dance the night away to a live singer or band, bring some nibbles, and just have fun! n Check out our events pages for more details, or call David and Rene on 01904 470292.
Head over to www.yourlocallink.co.uk for dozens of other great local clubs to join.

23RD OCT 21ST NOV
If you’re waiting for lucky breaks, you’ll wait in vain, for this is a period in which you must create your own luck and go with the flow of the consequences. The trouble is, of course, that there are a number of barriers between where you are and where you want to be. I suspect that if you try to break down the barriers you’ll waste a lot of time, so the secret is to find some way around the barriers, and get to where you want to be through the back door. One of the key stumbling blocks is your lack of money, so perhaps the first thing to do is concentrate on building up your finances. And by this, I don’t mean spending a few quid on lottery tickets! The work
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV-21ST DEC CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN Probably an awkward start to the month caused by a patch of low energy, or plans having to be changed at the 11th hour. A more upbeat mood kicks in around the 7th or 8th, and you can look forward to some good money news between the 12th and the 20th. News from overseas should be relevant for some, while for others, order your wedding hats and suits.
This should be a very busy month on the work scene, and care must be taken (a) to not overtire yourself and (b) to avoid stress. Finances are okay, but you need to keep a tighter grip on the cheque book and plastic, avoiding unnecessary expense. An awareness of potential health problems helps you avoid them – so do be aware!

opportunities are there, although I grant you, they might not be glaringly obvious. Nevertheless, around the 20th, 21st and 22th, some does fall into place in connection with cash and careers, and if something is offered (even if it’s something you don’t want) may I respectfully suggest you grab it with both hands. Not as a beall-and-end-all, but as a stepping stone that leads to other, better things. Overseas interests may be relevant for some of you, but a different interpretation of this chart might be to suggest you have to look farther afield to find whatever it is you’re searching for.
AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB
While there could be news of pregnancies and births, perhaps a less parochial view of this chart might suggest the birth of some new and brighter visions of your mid and long term future. Plans made now might take two years to come to fruition, but will be well worth it in the end. Therefore, plan for and play the long game!
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
Time to walk away from things that no longer work – fridges, TVs, cars, friendships, or relationships. Hard to do, sometimes, but equally very necessary. The new cannot be found while the old is cluttering up the heart and mind, so time for fresh starts, new beginnings, new pathways and some very exciting new adventures.

Single members of the sign will probably have more fun this month as they rush hotfoot after new romantic liaisons and conquests. Out of this hedonism, however, there may be some very nice surprises when something light hearted and casual becomes something quite intense and permanent. Engagement rings? Who said anything about engagement rings?
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
Older members of the sign should have some success in finding (a) a new sense of identity, and (b) a new sense of purpose. These things are vitally important because they re-ignite the Taurean life spark and make life a lot more fun. Emotional relationships and financial stability are on an even keel, and should be improving very slightly by month’s end.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
Female members of the sign seem to carry the weight of family responsibility at this time and, like it or not, assume the leadership role. While this enables them to have more of their own way, it also means that they can bring some order to various states of chaos. This is something that will be noticed and appreciated by others.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
This should be a brilliant month for anyone involved with property – its purchase, its sale, or its improvement! It’s also a positive period for improving domestic atmospheres and resolving
problems with awkward children. Legal aspects add some flavour to the month, but to your advantage. Reunions and news of pregnancies should also be relevant.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
It’s easy to make decisions when you know what to do – less easy when you don’t! Therefore, there may be a couple of blind choices in front of you during the days ahead, and as always, I would say trust your gut instincts. Change on one level or another seems inevitable, so try to embrace it, rather than resisting it. It’s the easier and more natural passage.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
Like your Zodiac neighbour, you may find you have to face some awkward decisions. Do you stick with the devil you know or take a chance with the devil you don’t? Trust your past experience here, and play safe rather than stepping into the unknown. There may be some major changes ahead, but not yet, not now, and not until you’re ready.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
Younger members of the sign may feel they’re being pushed into action before they’re ready, and yet the tide cannot be turned. This is a time for young people to find their independence and stand on their own two feet. Travel and geographic relocation looks likely for some, while major change in domestic routines is inevitable for others.

Krystal’s gems I’m not a fan I stan (stalker fan) Post Malone. He is, without doubt, my favourite artist of all time, ever. I can’t quite explain what it is. Perhaps his little moustache that looks like two dogs kissing, or maybe it’s his face tattoo that says Always Tired, which prompts the important question: Aren’t we all? As well as these magnetic features, his music is the main event. He comfortably pulls rap and hiphop into the mainstream with his pop-like formulas and ties it all up with his very sexy, gravelly voice… So when his European tour went on sale, I was ready to snatch those standing tickets the-hell-up.
All downhill from here
If I haven’t mentioned before, the guys I work with are awesome. The whole office sat in anticipation, clicking the refresh button at 9am on the ticket sale site. After what felt like an eternity of trying to get in the queue to buy tickets, I quickly realised that options were disappearing. Between five of us, we got through for one seated
20
ticket. Within 10 minutes, tickets started popping up on resale sites for over £200. Here’s a new one: Platinum Tickets. Available from the original seller, these allow prices to rise with supply and demand, but give you nothing more than a standard seat. According to one lovely ticket sale website: “The goal is to give the most passionate fans fair and safe access to the most in-demand tickets”. I would say that the word passionate should be replaced with ‘loaded’. Because there’s a difference between having passion and having a spare £200 knocking about, to spend on a two or three hour gig.
FOR THE SAME PRICE AS A PLATINUM TICKET, I COULD GET FACE VALUE TICKETS PLUS FLIGHTS TO PARIS.
Rubbish-ticket-website also stated that these prices reflect the tickets’ ‘true value’. I would just like to put the ‘true value’
into perspective. Here are some things you can get with £200+: A 40” LCD TV, a weekend away in Paris, 200 Mayo Chickens, or enough food for a small family for a month. Anyway, I digress. We all hate dirty ticket resale sites that make killer profits, and the Platinum Tickets are a similar concept - it just allows the original beneficiaries to get in on the game, too. These thoughts ran through my mind as I mulled over the fact that I wasn’t going to get standing, face value tickets for my number one boy.
The turning point BINGO. Paris tickets didn’t sell out. Yep, god bless the French who aren’t quite as obsessed with Post Malone as us Brits. For the same price as a Platinum Ticket, I could get face value tickets - plus flights to Paris. I did what any sane and slightly obsessed fan would do. I whacked out my bank card, and bought two tickets for my boyfriend and I. Au revoir Platinum Ticket sellers and bonjour Post Malone in Paris. I couldn’t have done it without the cruel, cruel mistress that is supply and demand.

It’s been some time since York City were involved in an exciting FA Cup run, but thanks to a couple of kind draws, the club are on the cusp of reaching the First Round Proper – providing they can beat Blyth Spartans in the 4th Qualifying Round. In fact, despite now plying their trade at the lowest level in their proud history, the club are certainly buoyant at their chances of success. Well, that’s if the club’s match-day programme is anything to go by, given that the date of the FA Cup Final is down as a potential match in the fixture list. Perhaps more realistic is the FA Trophy Final (the kind of non-League FA Cup), which happens to be on the same weekend. Bit of a lack of respect on the FA’s part given that the Minstermen might have to play two games in 48 hours. In fairness, the
26
club’s programme is one of the highlights this year, with special retro covers and features in homage to the last season at Bootham Crescent. However, I had to laugh at the recent memory lane article on when we beat Manchester City in 1998, which apparently was written in The Press by a reporter in 1990. Incredible journalist insight to predict that result eight years in advance. Hopefully in eight years’ time, York City will be back in the Football League at a packed community stadium every week! This quiet optimism of York City’s revival is all taking place under the guidance of newly appointed manager, Sam Collins. It’s taking the supporters some convincing, though – who seem to scoff at any positivity Collins tries to put out in the media. Upon saying we had the strongest bench in the League, a fan posted a comment saying: “Of course it’s
Dan Tait
strong – it has to hold Parkin’s weight.” A bit cutting. But, having read The Beast’s autobiography recently, he’s heard far worse over the years. GOLDEN EGGS While the results on the pitch seem to be mixed, the same cannot be said for the York City Knights’ Rugby League side. They clinched promotion after a fantastic season – finishing two points ahead of their nearest rivals, the fallen giants, Bradford Bulls. It capped a brilliant season for the Knights, who were outsiders at 10/1 to win the title before a game was played. Full credit goes to Head Coach James Ford and his team, who have played some fantastic rugby. They’ve broken points’ records and won 24 out of their 26 matches – and now deservedly take their place in the Championship, the second-tier of the sport. It’s been great to see the crowds of over 3,000 packing into Bootham Crescent to back them to promotion. The Knights are going to celebrate their Betfred League One-winning campaign with an end-of-season awards dinner at York Racecourse. The ceremony, which also marks the 150th year anniversary of the club, will be hosted by BBC Look North’s Harry Gration on Saturday, 10th November. Fans will get the chance to meet, and have photographs with, the players – and check out the club's new silverware.

The dementia friendly coffee mornings, which take place three times a week, are open to everyone and aim to tackle isolation and help members of the local community come together and share their memories. Each week is different. As well as chatting, visitors can expect the odd game of boccia or darts and the occasional quiz. The weekly event costs nothing to attend and there is always a selection of biscuits to go down well with a free hot drink. Monday: 1-2.30pm, Wigginton Old School Thursday: 10.30-12pm, Springhill Court, Easingwold Friday:10.30-12pm, Bootham Crescent

EMBER CERAMIC MUG. A mug? For high-flying, techsavvy, loaded executives? What?!? Well, the Ember Ceramic Mug is just that: a ceramic mug. BUT it comes with a very clever USBpowered coaster that is designed to keep your beverage at whatever temperature you specify. If you’re sick of your coffee going cold after 20 minutes (20 minutes you spent in the executive bathroom looking at yourself in the mirror while maniacally grinning), use this, set the temperature to a toasty 60 degrees, and it’ll stay there. Then you can sip away, knowing your bev will always be the ideal temperature. Now not even the laws of thermodynamics can stop you! Next, you’ll make gravity your bitch. n £80 from www.ember.com

JEEPERS CREEPERS N O N E E D T O B E S C A R E D T O TA K E T H I S J E E P O U T F O R A T E S T D R I V E A S JASON CHINNIAN FOUND OUT…
A rugged looking five door sports utility vehicle glistens in the late autumn sun on the car lot at SG Petch. Powered by only a 1.0 petrol turbo engine, I wondered if I was going to be in for a noisy and under-powered ride; would the Jeep Renegade Longitude 1.0 GSE T3 Turbo prove me wrong? The car is very stocky and aggressivelooking in shape with echoes of its predecessors. It does however look very practical and an ideal family car. But it hints that it has more to offer: the sporty alloys, the contrast roof rails, front spot lights, the large windows and classic Jeep front end grille with high set headlamps, and ultra-curvy wheel arches. It still smacks of a proper 4x4. The interior is spacious with plenty of head room and large comfortable seats. Visibility is excellent with the large windows on all sides. The dash has an information screen with Sat Nav,
phone facilities, media player, AUX inputs, DAB radio and even apps. The information display behind the steering wheel also shows pertinent details such as speed limits for the area you are driving in and when to shift gear. But the biggest plus point is a loud beeping noise when you’re close to another object and that a collision could occur. So, for example, if a car is turning left and you are behind and encroach too closely the car will sound this alarm and automatically slow down. What an amazing safety feature to keep you, and those around you out of harm’s way. The steering wheel added to the refinement and felt good with all the expected controls present. Indicators and light switches were exactly where they should be as well as the audio and phone controls. The response of this 1.0 Turbo engine was excellent. There was little engine
noise as I went through the gears but it all added to the driving experience. The turbo felt engaged even at these lower revolutions whilst driving north out of York on the B1363. It made for a smooth gear transition with no overrevving. The acceleration was quick and very smooth and is a testament to the engine design. The brakes were very responsive but took a little getting used to. The B-roads gave me the opportunity to really open it up and test the handling: it responded very well and belied the fact that it’s a relatively high and wide vehicle. The ride was smooth and comfortable and reflected this new breed of car that have smaller engines, are more economical and more environmentally friendly, yet perform like much more powerful vehicles. All in all, this car is a pleasure to drive. It looks the part and comes with most
of the extras you would need to keep you in touch with the modern world. It also drives well, comfortably and safely, allowing you to feel confident behind the wheel. The turbo kicks in when needed and there’s no discernible lag when accelerating. The price for the Jeep Renegade 1.0 GSE T3 starts from £20,740 OTR with the range rising to £22,940 for the GSE T4. This is a vehicle that performs, offers many of the mod cons and looks the part, but is still ideal for the family.

news THIS MONTH’S IDIOT AWARD GOES TO... ...the plonker who not only rode a motorbike at 189mph along British streets, but also made the clever decision to do so one-handed while filming himself on his phone. Congratulations goes to Adam Campion, 26, from Hucknall, who scoops the award this month after also receiving a 21 month prison sentence for this and other dangerous driving offences. He was actually arrested for being in possession of a stolen motorbike, but once the police searched his home and his laptop, they found the videos of him committing even greater crimes. He might as well have kept a diary called ‘How I Broke the Law and Endangered Others Today’ and left it on his bedside table. A worthy winner indeed.
GADGETGUIDE DASH TO REPORT THE NUTTERS
Got a dash cam in your car? Chances are many of you do, as they’re great for recording possible accidents and incidents that take place on the road before you. However, if you do catch something important or illegal, getting the footage to the police has often been a long and complicated ordeal. Traditionally some forces, including our own in North Yorkshire, could only accept video evidence in hard copy format... until now. Spearheaded by UK dash cam maker Nextbase, police forces across the UK are signing up to a new National Dash Cam Safety Portal to accept dash cam footage, meaning it’s now as simple as clicking on a website, uploading the file, and filling out a witness statement. n Find out more at www.nextbase.com
GOVERNMENT TO INVEST IN NOTHING Or rather, zero. That’s because the government has just ear-marked £40 million for research into electric car charging technology, hoping to get the UK to a point where we emit zero emissions by 2040. One big area of research will be made into onstreet charging possibilities, where EV owners are unable to plug in their cars on a driveway. It’s also hoped that, soon, the very roads we drive on will be able to wirelessly charge the cars as they motor along, meaning there will never be a need to pull over for fuel. All we need now are toilets in cars and you could effectively drive forever.
NERF LASER OPS. Laser tag is back! Nerf, makers of foam flinging toy blasters, have recently released a new set of light-shooting guns. The new Laser Ops sets use your smartphone and augmented reality to have fun, and there is absolutely no chance that you’ll get a foam dart in the eye, as there is with normal Nerf blasters. The toys look pretty great, and – we’re happy to learn – are big enough to be comfortably wielded by adults. Nice. n £40 from nerf.hasbro.com
BLINKERS. As the nights will soon start to draw in, cyclists should once more begin to consider their night-time riding visibility. Blinkers are a set of lights that draw inspiration from cars, as they’re indicators for your bike. Hook them up and use the wireless remote control to signal to other road users, telling them which way you’re turning. Blinkers also feature a bright heads-up light, and a laser light that projects around you. Many birds, one solid technological stone. n £99 from www.blinkers.bike

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE PAYING FOR By Mel Collier, Bathroom Planning and Design Consultant at JDL I always recommend when you’re doing any work in your house, you get more than one quotation. But what I should clarify is that you get more than one like for like quotation. On more than one occasion, we’ve been told by customers that we’ve lost the job because somebody else has come in considerably cheaper only to find out that when the job’s been completed, they’ve been hit with a number of additions to the quote. Sometimes even for things like tiling, because the quote has just specified ‘bathroom installation’! What I would like to do this month, is take the guess work out of the quotation process and let you know the key questions you should be asking: • Does the quotation include tiling? • What electrical works are included and is a qualified electrician going to do the works? • Are the accessories (toilet roll holder, towel rail etc.) included and will these be fitted? • What guarantee do I get with my products? • How long is the labour element of my work guaranteed for?
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD
also recognised for our new website that makes it easy for customers to buy from home if they can’t get to the showroom.
• Will I get the appropriate certificates for the work? • What happens if your contractor finds something that needs extra work doing to it? Is there a process for quoting the extra work? • How long will the work take? • What’s not included? Obviously, personality goes a long way as well and you need to make sure your contractor is a right fit for you and your family. But it’s only when you have all of the information above that you can truly decide which contractor is best for you. Here at JDL, we try to be as open as possible with our pricing and we price you for a complete job which hopefully means you can budget and know what you need before any works are undertaken.
Take the stress out of choosing your new bathroom: Call Mel on 01904 608350 or email enquiries@jdl.co.uk
Monday 1st October was an extremely important night for us at Herbert Todd & Son. It was the night of ERT magazine’s prestigious awards ceremony - and we only went and WON three times! Apologies for the shameless self-promotion but it’s not every day you get national recognition for your efforts... To say we’ve been blown away by the judges’ decisions is an understatement! The three awards were presented to myself and the team, and were given in the following three categories; first the “Turning Point Award” for a retailer who has adapted their whole business to move with the times. We were recognised for our move to much larger premises at Monks Cross, where we’re able to show off all the products we sell in the best surroundings. We were
The second award was for “Domestic Appliances Retailer of the Year” and was given to us in recognition of our status as a preferred partner to the key brands we love in the UK. We were also awarded it for the fact that all our appliances are live and staff are on hand to talk through the products we sell. Finally, and beyond all our expectations, we won the prestigious “Independent Electrical Retailer of the Year” award beating some very tough competition. We always love getting great feedback from our customers, but for anyone who has never shopped with us, our hope is that this gives them the confidence to know they are shopping with the best independent electrical company in the UK. My thanks go to the fabulous team we have here at Todd’s who go the extra mile every day to make sure we exceed our customers’ expectations every time. The team look forward to seeing you in one of our stores soon!

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
r e w o P r e w o Fl Statistics show that one in four people will experience a mental health issue at some point in any one year. Being outdoors in the garden can be beneficial in many ways to those people, as a form of natural therapy. Gardening can help a person's emotional and physical wellbeing in many ways, such as alleviating stress, providing a form of exercise, lifting moods and creating a sense of purpose and achievement. Not to mention the potential new skills and knowledge that can be acquired along the way. For some people, the idea of even walking out of the front door can be a challenge. Or the thought of tackling a large scale project can lead to bouts of stress and anxiety. However, there are many ways in which forms of gardening can be done to suit the individual and achieve personal goals.
BIT BY BIT If the prospect of tackling your whole garden is daunting, consider starting one small section at a time - maybe weeding or cultivating what's already there, or creating a new project. One idea could be to create a herb garden or
vegetable plot. Being self-sufficient can be very rewarding, and can create a great sense of achievement through the process of sowing the seed, nurturing the plants and seeing the end result of something you have personally done. There are a huge variety of herb and vegetable seeds and plants to choose from, and if you have a small garden - or no garden at all - why not try sowing seeds in pots or window boxes? You'll get the same great benefits!
PERFECT SENSE Sensory gardens are also another great idea. There are many plants that can be used that stimulate the senses of smell, touch, taste, sound and sight. Try using both flower and vegetable plants that are brightly coloured, highly scented, have textured foliage or flowers and those that can be used for culinary purposes. There are also many plants that can attract wildlife to your garden, which not only creates a visual aspect for you, but also helps the environment. Why not try joining a local gardening group? Not only can you gain more knowledge and skills, but it's also a great way to get involved with the community, and make new friends. Check out the events section on pages 60-66 and see what's going on near you!
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY October 10th was World Mental Health Day, and was the inspiration for this article. We’ve gathered some facts – and some guidance on what you can do if you need help: • Gardening can be so beneficial to mental health that it can actually be a career path! Horticultural Therapists help many different people through gardening, and helping them to build and develop many skills. • Exercise releases happy hormones, such as serotonin, and decreases stress hormones. And, of course, gardening is a form of exercise! • If you suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that gets worse at different times of the year, then being outside in organic light can be a huge help. • Here in York, we’re fortunate enough to have Britain’s last surviving Railway Nursery on our doorstep. Poppleton Community Railway Nursery is a non-profit organisation that works in partnership with health agencies in the York area, to help adults
recovering from mental health problems. If you think it might help you, visit www.poppletonrailwaynursery.co.uk for more information. Remember – mental health is real, and nothing to be ashamed of. You’re not alone. If you need help, or need someone to talk to, call The Samaritans any time, any day, on 116 123.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
GOT A GARDENING QUESTION?
Q.
Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Which fast-growing hedging would you recommend in an area that doesn’t get a lot of light and is in heavy, dry clay?
Whatever you decide to plant would benefit from improving the soil – dig in some well-rotted manure or compost before planting. As far as hedging plants are concerned, the fastest would be Cu. Leylandii at about one metre growth per year. But remember that they’ll grow at this rate all their lives, so plenty of trimming is required! The next best conifer, and in my opinion a better option, is Thuja plicata – which grows at 45cm per year. Another option worth considering is laurel hedging. Quick-growing and robust, as well as evergreen. Laurel is often overlooked as a hedging alternative, but is well worth a look. The foliage colours vary from light green to a lovely emerald green.
Q.
I have a Cordyline, which is about three years old and looking well. Near the base of the trunk however, it’s getting thinner and making the plant lean over. What could be happening and what can I do to correct it?
If the base of your Cordyline seems to be narrowing, I’d suggest that there’s some sort of fungal infection attacking the stem. Check to see if it’s soft at the narrow point. This would mean a soft rot, or it might be a type of canker eating away at the tissue. Dust the infected area with sulphur dust (green or yellow) to arrest the fungus. If the plant is in a container, plant it a little deeper to stabilise it. If it’s in a garden bed, take an old plastic pot at least 9in in diameter, cut off the bottom and cut all down one side. This can then be clipped around the trunk of the Cordyline and filled with John Innes compost No 3. Keep this watered and the plant will make new roots in the pot, which will help to stabilise the plant and create a new root system to sustain the growth.
Q.
I have a Japanese Maple and every year the leaves sprout but then die back. They come back and die off again. This has happened all this summer – what can I do to prevent this next year? It’s a common problem and the answer is usually to do with the situation that the plant is placed in. Japanese Maples naturally grow in slightly acid soil under the canopy of taller deciduous trees. So your plant should be away from wind and bright sunlight. The soil or compost should also be free draining as they hate getting waterlogged. At the same time they mustn’t be allowed to dry out. Late spring frosts can also be a problem, so the plants must be sheltered from them too. If your soil is very heavy, the plant would probably be better off in a pot of John Innes compost with about 20% composted bark and 10% horticultural grit added. If you intend to move the shrub, do so now in the autumn while it’s dormant.

That was the leek that was Leeks have always been one of the easiest crops to grow in the vegetable garden. For years I’ve grown them without many problems. Early ones are started off in trays and planted out towards the end of May, while later ones are sown in the soil and planted out in July or early August. These usually follow crops such as beans, peas and early potatoes – giving a harvest from September right through until late April the following year. Last year, I noticed that some of the leeks on my allotment plot had some tatty looking, partly shredded, leaves. Upon digging I also saw that some had brownish surface blotches on the shanks. For just a handful this seemed to have led to some deeper rotting, that made the entire leek inedible. It was only the early crop, gathered between October and Christmas, that were affected. Leeks harvested later in the winter didn’t show damage. This year, the allotment leeks began to show signs of leaf damage in midsummer. Initially, all that was visible was
some shredding and mining of the leaves, but then I noticed some small grey cocoons on the foliage. Upon harvesting the leeks over the last month or so it’s become apparent that this year’s damage is both more widespread and severe. Most harvested leeks have brown blotches on the shank, particularly the upper part. Although some only have superficial damage and can be salvaged by peeling away the outer layers of the stem, many plants have been more deeply penetrated, and have begun to rot. Unfortunately, the damage seems to be getting worse – and lots of the leeks look like they’ll be unusable. PEST CONTROL Renewed research indicates, as I feared last year, that this damage is the result of infestation by leek moth. This is a pest that’s been present in the far south of England for some time, but has recently begun spreading rapidly north – probably aided by climate change. The moth lays eggs on the leek foliage, which hatch into caterpillars. These then feed on the leaves before boring into the stem. It seems there are two generations of moths each year: one that lays eggs in late May and June, and another between August and October.

EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft There is another new pest of leeks – and onions and garlic – called the allium leaf miner, which is also becoming more prevalent. This causes similar damage, but I’m sure it’s the leek moth and not the allium leaf miner that’s the culprit. TURN OVER A NEW LEAF Fortunately, so far at least, my later leeks on a different site show no signs of attack. These are covered in a protective fine net, such as Environmesh*, which I’m hoping should exclude the moth. However, several other local allotment holders have reported similar damage to what I’ve experienced, so it’s likely that the leek moth has arrived in the York area. If you grow leeks, do keep an eye out for this unwelcome new pest. Prevention is better than cure. If you plan to grow leeks next year it may well be worth covering them with a fine net to prevent adult moths reaching the plants. Don’t say you haven’t been warned! * Visit www.enviromesh.co.uk to purchase.

YOUR FAMILY
Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
HALF LIFE
The recent onset of autumn reminded that I’ve called York my home for 18 years. Those with exceptionally high IQs might be able to work out that I therefore arrived in the year 2000, and that I was a fresh-faced 18 year old, ready to suckle on the teat that was university knowledge. What a lovely image to begin with. Despite making this city my home for nigh on two decades, doing so wasn’t a part of my original plan. In fact, when interviewing for my first post-uni job, and when asked what my long-term plans were (at which point a hopeful interviewee might describe a desire to get that job and work hard at that job wherever that job might be located) I thoughtlessly blurted that I was planning on “giving it a couple of months, then buggering off to live in Bath, ‘cos it looked nice on an episode of Time Team”. Needless to say, I wasn’t offered the job.
I did, however, get the job anyway, as a result of what I used to refer to as ‘Howard Magic’, which I now recognise as a short-lived combination of luck and pestering people so thoroughly that they say yes just to get me to shut up. It’s how I actually got my place at university. And later, my wife. NO BATH In the end I didn’t move to Bath, and Bath remains a city I have regrettably yet to visit. My obsession with alternate timelines comes into play whenever someone mentions the place, and I imagine what the version of Howard who did move to Bath is doing now. I can’t be sure, but I bet he’s married to Natalie
46
Portman and the two of them are living happily in LA, childless and loaded.
Unlike the vast majority of my course mates who moved to London to pursue careers in the media y’know having just completed a media degree, and that - this version of Howard remained in York and pursued careers that I don’t even bother mentioning on my CV these days. A hop, skip, and a jump along the timeline to now, and here I am, a father of four, and very much a ‘York Person’. I scoff at cities that don’t have fully pedestrianised centres, balk at other cathedrals, and titter when people who live closer to London than I reveal that it actually takes them longer to get there on the train. Arf. D(ONNY)NA However, as great an impact that York has had on my behaviour and opinions, I must shamelessly admit to still possessing Doncaster DNA. New readers to the column might not realise, but I am, in fact, from Doncaster. You probably know someone from Doncaster. Whenever I mention that I was born and raised in “sunny Donny”, people inevitably comment that their housemate, or their ex, or their dog walker is from Doncaster. We get about. Because nobody wants to stay in Doncaster. My residual Doncastrian traits were recently activated during a visit to said home town, when my mother announced some devastating news. “There’s a planning application to build 300 new houses on the field opposite.” On hearing the news, I felt instant rage. How dare
COLUMNIST
Howard Mosley-Chalk
they build houses there? When young, I would sit on my skateboard and watch the crops swaying in the breeze. What, are they going to just dig all that up, the fiends?!? Damn their idea of progress. Damn it all to hell. BATTLE I then realised I was having this mental tantrum in a house that, along with 299 others, was built on what was once a field of swaying crops, 40 years previously. I pointed this out to my mum, and the possibility that this exact same conversation was had by people living in the houses that were built on the neighbouring field 80 years ago. I also pointed out that, in 40 years time in a house yet to be built, similar devastating news is being revealed about further development in the nextbut-one field. It did nothing to calm her down. So now I find myself returning to the mother country to fight for my people (because my mum wants me to). My weapons? A York-nurtured knowledge history. I’ll use Roman roads, forts, and the legend of Robin Hood to attack the dastardly developers and hamper their plans to build much-needed new and affordable housing. I’ll force them to undertake a long and costly archaeological survey, based on my late-night research sessions with old maps, Google Earth, and bits of rocks I found in that field when I was nine. You just watch. I’ll bring the York big guns to Donny.

YOUR FAMILY TO OZ OR NOT TO OZ? Dear Daphne, I met someone cool a couple of months ago and I think I’m falling in love with them, but I had plans to spend a year in Australia next spring. I’ve even applied for the visa and booked my one way flight This is the first time I’ve felt like this about someone in a very long time. They make me very happy but I know I’ll regret not going to complete the year abroad if I stay here for them. What should I do? Australia will probably be the trip of lifetime, so my first piece of advice would be to go, regardless of
48
where this relationship takes you. Spring is six whole months away, and a lot can happen in six months. It might not work out, the person you’ve met might decide they want to come with you, you might be in a strong, loving relationship, but they are unable to join you on your travels. In which case a year might seem too long, but maybe a couple of months away would be manageable. When it comes to relationships, compromise is key, and there are plenty for you to consider. So for now, make sure they know your plans, talk about your options and enjoy each other’s company. It will fall into place soon enough.
FAMILY MATTERS Dear Daphne, I pay my parents rent, and rightly so. However my slightly younger sister who also works full time has never had to pay them. She was late getting a job and spends a lot of her money on going out and buying clothes. As I’ve got older I’ve become more aware of doing stuff in the house to help out, too - but the more I do, the more I’ve noticed how little she does. She eats for free, leaves a trail of mess behind her and
has no sense of responsibility. I’m worried about my parents encouraging her behaviour against their own interests, but I’m also worried that if she doesn’t grow up she won’t be ready for the real world when it comes. Where do I start? I’m glad you pay your parents rent because you want to, and not because you have to. But because of this, it was entirely your sister’s decision whether or not she pays rent, too. I’ve learnt that the key to a happier life is not to get angry because you’re doing the right thing and someone else isn’t. Pat yourself on the back, know that you’re doing the right thing and move on from this slightly-unfair-but-also-highly-representativeof-life issue. When it comes to her being a slob in the house: this is something neither you, nor your parents should have to tolerate. Ask your parents how they feel about this? Would asking her to tidy up after herself cause a row? Maybe a row is needed. It does sound like she’s not treating you or your family with the basic respect that you all deserve. If a conversation is unsuccessful, perhaps more serious measures are needed. Why not collect the mess she leaves in her wake and dump it all in her bedroom. Might work?
Dear Daphne, I’m concerned that my 16 year old son spends far more time online than socialising in person. His online friends who he games with seem to pester him constantly when he spends time away from his console, even when he’s trying to eat his tea. While I have no problem with him gaming, I’m worried that this much will affect his social skills later on in life. He is shy with new people in real life and seems to be a bit of a recluse. In comparison I hear him shouting every word under the sun when he’s sat on his game box or whatever you call it.
YOUR FAMILY
JUST A GAME
I bet hundred of parents all over the world have this concern in today’s climate. I’ve seen first hand the effects of excessive gaming, and while they’re not debilitating, they are certainly noticeable. What’s more, ‘Gaming Disorder’ has been defined by the World Health Organisation as a genuine disease this year - so it’s certainly something to be aware of. Before you start worrying, ask yourself if it’s affecting any of these key things right now: school work, physical education or social interaction. It sounds like you could be pre-empting these things rather than them being an actual issue. However, you have every right not to be comfortable with your son shouting profanities at a screen, and it’s reasonable for you to expect that he should be able to have time away from gaming without his peers pressuring him to get back on his console. Perhaps ask him if he’s going to take a little bit of time out each week to spend time with the family. Work on talking to him about his games, hopefully you’ll see that his social skills are there and you might learn a bit about what’s so good about these flipping games. If you find out, please let me know, too!

PAINTING THE TOWN PURPLE Our city is about to have a colourful makeover to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. Between 1st-10th November, Clifford’s Tower and the City Walls all the way from Lendal Bridge to the station are going to be lit up in purple, as part of Pancreatic Cancer Action’s Turn it Purple campaign. Pancreatic cancer is the UK’s fifth deadliest cancer, and, due to late diagnosis, the survival rate is an unbelievably low 3%, with an average life expectancy of just 3-6 months. Perhaps even more shockingly, the survival rate hasn’t changed in 40 years. By shining purple, the symbolic colour of pancreatic cancer, across our city’s
landmarks, Pancreatic Cancer Action hope that people will become more aware of the disease and its symptoms. Ali Stunt, CEO of Pancreatic Cancer Action, says: “We’re delighted that two buildings in York are taking part. It’s thanks to their participation that the event will be a success and more people will become aware.”
CHECK IT OUT Do you know what to look for? Here are some common symptoms: Acid reflux • Back pain (lower left side) Abdominal pain on eating • Unexplained weight loss • Jaundice • New onset diabetes • •
Remember, if you’re unsure about anything, always check with your GP.

Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, explains what Tear Trough Eye Fillers are and how they work.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY BEFORE
Under-eye bags are a common complaint among us, and operations to fix this issue have been happening for years. Many people, however, have the opposite problem. As they age, they develop trough-like hollows where the top of the cheekbone meets the under-eye. These are known as tear troughs. The cause of this is a loss of facial volume and elasticity — in the cheek area as well as under the eye — along with a mild reduction in bone volume and a general descent of skin. These not only combine to create tear troughs - they also accentuate dark circles under the eyes, making people look tired and worried, even when they’re well-rested and happy. Surgery, usually in the form of a lower eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), is not always appropriate to correct tear trough shadowing, although people with very

Time Travel Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.
THIS MONTH: YORK’S OLD RAILWAY STATION No, not the station from where you catch a train today (although if you’ve ever been in it at 2am after returning from ‘a rager’ in Newcastle, it feels pretty old), but rather the place you’d go to request a new wheelie bin or complain about Council Tax increases. Yep, we’re looking at the railway station that is now home to City of York Council. So grab your luggage, check your tickets, and join us for a ride to absolutely nowhere!
Many of you might be aware that our current station, with its many platforms and coffee outlets, was not the first. The original station predates even our building of interest today, being a small, wooden structure off Queen Street, built in 1839. It was quickly succeeded by a purpose-built
railway terminus station, complete with ticket office, waiting rooms, refreshments, and, later, a hotel. But it wasn’t to last… BOOM The 1830s and 40s saw a huge boom in rail travel. Thanks to the likes of George Hudson, York was established as a desirable place to visit, both for business, and for the newly created fad of tourism. And so, York was connected to the railways by Hudson’s York and North Midland Railway Company that offered trips to London, via Birmingham. Actually, York was a terminus location, a bit like Scarborough is today. That is why they thought it was a grand idea to build the fancy new station inside the walls with just one way in and out. Completed in 1841, and designed by George Townsend Andrews, the station featured just two platforms; one for arrivals, and one for departures. Part of the station was to act as a hotel, and Andrews also designed this, sitting at the head of the lines, facing onto Station Rise. It was the first hotel of its kind, kickstarting the trend for Victorian railway
56
stations to have an attached place to stay – see the current station’s efforts in the lovely Principal Hotel. Speaking of Queen Victoria, she actually visited the hotel soon after it was opened in 1853, earning it the name ‘The Royal Station Hotel’. OBSOLETE However, the station was only used for 36 years, and in 1877 the newly built railway station took over all major services to and from the city. The reason for this was the growing popularity of the railways, and the awkward original design of the old station. As York was connected to the wider rail network, and was no longer a terminus destination, trains had to back out of the station to continue on, causing delays and general inconvenience.
Have
BUNDLES OF FUN
at your event this year
Play equipment for all types of parties, including; bouncy castles, rodeo bulls, casino tables, inflatable action games, assault courses, sumo action suits, pole joust/pillow bash, giant games
ALL ABOARD! Go to the Council’s West Offices today and you’ll be invited to enter opposite Toft Green. Do so, and you’ll be standing inside what was the ticket office in 1852. Enter the building proper (with your purchased time-ticket, obviously) and you’ll be standing on what was the Departure platform. As the current building has largely kept the open-plan design, you can still get a sense of the station’s space. To your left is a waiting room, post office, and the lost luggage room, but we’re heading to the right… because you’re lucky enough to have purchased a first class ticket. Get you. Just as at Scarborough station today, you have to walk around the end of the line to get to the other platform, and if you did so in York in 1852 you’d pass the 2nd class waiting room and then the parcel room (then, unbeknownst to most travellers, be walking directly above the remains of a Roman bath house – fact), before turning to the left with The Grand hotel above you.

But, thanks to its continued use for a further 80 years as a carriage storage space, the old station buildings survived, allowing us to explore them today. So, with the useful 1852 map of York as a guide, let’s take a trip back in time to the old station.

On the Arrivals platform you’ll find your First Class waiting room, but also a bar and place to leave your luggage. There you can await your train to London, and chat to other swanky peeps about your investments in India, or something. The great thing is that it’s all still there: the walls, the rooms, the layout of that station. Obviously, it’s now filled with hardworking City of York Council employees, but at least you can freely wander in there and have a look. Unlike many historic buildings, the Old Station hasn’t been demolished, nor has it been converted into an exclusive hotel or luxury apartments. It’s still ours. Win.
