YORK LIFE

boom month Yes, it’s that time of year again... the boom time. That doesn’t mean there is any kind of economic boom or growth, but rather every night for a fortnight around the 5th the night air is filled with the sound of bang, boom, crackle, and snap. We suppose the firework industry sees an economic boom, as well as the ‘piles of old wooden pallets to burn’ industry. Anyway... As the rhyme goes, ‘Remember remember the fifth of November...’, and it really is worth remembering, especially because one of the leading members of the plot to blow up parliament was a local lad. Guido Fawkes (or ‘Guy’ as he known ‘round these parts, presumably because the locals thought Guido “sounds a bit poncey”) was caught red-handed setting up barrels of gun powder.

Just imagine the conversation he must have had with the guard who discovered him: “What you doing with all that gun powder beneath parliament the day before the King is set to visit?” “Erm... nothing...?” So, to celebrate/commiserate Guy’s failed attempt at regicide (delete as per your political opinions) make sure you have a fun time on the evening of the 5th by visiting one of the local bonfires and fireworks displays. We’ve got all the deets in the bumper events section at the rear of the mag, as well as the low-down on everything else happening, right up to Christmas starting to kick in. As well as that, enjoy the regular features, columns, news stories and competitions, and, above all, stay safe as the whizz-bangs start flying. SARAH

Ice, ice, baby! What is the most exciting thing about Christmas in York? Carol concerts? No. Santa's grottos? No. Christmas markets? No. It is, of course, Yorkshire's Winter Wonderland, returning with a big ol' ice skating rink to the Designer Outlet, from 16th November. As well as the skating (and all the delicious food), this year you'll be able to enjoy vintage rides in the funfair – sure to be a traditional festive treat for all ages. Visit www.yorkshireswinterwonderland.com The great news is that we have one family pass up for grabs, with free hot chocolates, and one ride per person on any of the rides in the funfair. And entering couldn't be simpler – just answer this:

Where is this year's Winter Wonderland being held? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Winter Wonderland’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@ yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 10th November, so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

Theatre, dance, and drama classes are a fantastic way to build up a child's confidence, while also getting them out there to meet different people and learn new life skills. If you agree with that, but have always been put off from signing your young go-getter up for a class because of the costs involved, read on... this is the competition for you. Stagecoach, the weekend and evening performing arts school, are generously giving one lucky child, aged four to six, the chance to shine for an entire term, completely free! Stagecoach York has been providing quality training for more than 18 years. Their aim is to nurture and develop young potential through singing, acting, and dance classes, and to stretch young imaginations to create and be confident, on and off the stage. Visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/york For a chance of winning the term tuition, all you have to do is answer this easy question:

To which age range of children does the free place apply? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Stagecoach Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink. co.uk The competition ends on 30th November, so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

This is usually the time of year when your thoughts shift to Christmas gifts, and the often stressful shopping trips out to buy them. How about taking a different tack this year by crafting your own? If you'd like to have a go at a handmade Christmas, we know just the creative bods to talk to. Creative Avenue offer unique crafting parties and workshops, held across the city and covering a wealth of fun techniques. Gifts, decorations, family keepsakes, and even Dragon's Den-style marketing pitches of your finished products... the team of Creative Avenue will help you master the lot. Visit www.facebook.com/CreativeAvenueYork The great news is that they are offering a creative party experience or a Christmas crafting workshop free of charge to one person. All you have to do to enter is answer this question:

What kind of marketing pitches can Creative Avenue help you perfect? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Creative Avenue Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 30th November, so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

YORK LIFE

and life in general

AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

“ Waving woods and waters wild do hymn an Autumn sound. Elizabeth Barrett Browning may not have been a York resident, but she could easily have been (or so I thought while almost being blown into the Ouse on my bike this week). Yes, Autumn has arrived. Which means yucky Winter is on the horizon. Which, if the papers are to be believed, means we can all indulge in a little bit of hygge. This untranslatable Danish response to the changing of the seasons is the subject of no fewer than nine books published last month, all of which are evidently hoping to introduce us to the joys of shutting ourselves inside for four months, lighting scented candles, and bathing in hot chocolate while wearing a blanket.

All very well if you’re a Southerner, maybe. But for us hardy northerners, the invasion of hygge is an entirely different matter. And one to be resisted at all costs. After all, we have already been invaded once by the pesky Danes (think Ivar the Boneless and Eric Bloodaxe). In the ninth century AD, the Danes may have left behind a few things of cultural interest (names such as Micklegate and Skeldergate) - but in 2016 they can keep their hygge. The thing is: it’s just not Yorkish. During the floods, did we all sit indoors thinking about Kierkegaard, hugging our knees and waiting for the waters to abate? No we jolly well didn’t. We went out there with wellies and casseroles and sandbags. None of this lounging around “creating intimacy” nonsense.

MEMORIALS

Of course, nothing - not even hygge - is all bad. Indeed, there may well be aspects of hygge that we can incorporate effortlessly into our York lives. Here’s how to do it. 1. Hygge, Danish style: Mope around moodily with tealights. Hygge, York version: Visit the Minster. Plenty of tealights, with some good singing as well. Oh, and a bit of architecture thrown in. Alternatively, stay at home and buy some non-EU lightbulbs from the Little Man Near The Market. 2. Hygge: Mainline cinnamon buns. York: Mmm. Can’t see much

personally, I prefer the Pig and Pastry’s blueberry scones (the blueberry content makes them healthy, obviously, rather than carbohydrate on a plate). 3. Hygge: Wear a blanket while mainlining said cinnamon buns. York: Jigsaw on Stonegate does very nice ponchos, which are a bit like blankets. Coincidentally, it’s near Little Betty’s, and Fat Rascals are also better than cinnamon buns. 4. Hygge: Wear a scratchy jumper while looking around moodily in the fog. York: Buy a proper coat that you can wear to walk your dog on the Knavesmire. We can do fog, too.

wrong with that. Though

York: Not quite so easy. But there’s always L’Occitane on Low Petergate. 6. Hygge: Hide away from the elements. York: Accept the elements with good grace. Buy a brolly. Lose it. Buy another one. Leave it on the Number 4 to Acomb. And so on. 7. Hygge: Wear stylish socks while clutching a steaming mug of Scandinavian Glögg. York: Shambles Market has nice thermals. And Glögg is a waste of a good red. Anyway, isn’t drinking

alone a sign of alcoholism? The Danes can keep that one. 8. Hygge: Only speak to your nearest and dearest for four months, while you all sit indoors bathing your chilblains in hot choc with the lights off.

YORK LIFE

5. Hygge: Bathe in hot chocolate.

York: I can’t begin to imagine how you’d get through six minutes in York without bumping into a friend of a friend whom you sort of almost know because their child once went swimming with your niece, and talking to them at inordinate length. This is where the thermals and brolly come in a jolly sight handier than a blanket and a set of tea-lights.

So there we have it. We should, obviously, be eternally grateful to the Danes for inventing Lego bricks and ostomy bags (yes, I had to google ‘what are the Danes famous for?’ to discover the latter fascinating fact. They are also famous for Carlsberg’s Yeast, dontcha know). But hygge? Thanks, but I’ll have a brolly and a Fat Rascal in a cafe with friends any day.

Happy Autumn.

WORKING FROM HOME

Dear Daphne, I am a freelance writer and live at home with my mum. I work from home most days but recently my mum has been leaving me really long lists of jobs to do around the house while she's at work How can I explain to her that I am working too – just in the comfort of our family home. I'm on the verge of moving out. Anon

I think this one boils down to if you’re splitting everything manually and financially – I know it's a bit of a jump from a list of jobs. If you're paying halves with your mum and working as many hours then it's unacceptable for her to leave you a ton of jobs. If however, you're living there at a fraction of the cost and working less hours than your mum, then morally you should be helping her out around the house. I don't know the full story so it's hard to advise you on this one. There comes a time when we all need to move out from our parents and take responsibility for ourselves. Maybe now is your time?

Daph, my long term boyfriend FACEBOOK spends FRENZY a lot of time on Facebook, and other social media platforms. He's virtually addicted and rarely takes his eyes off his phone. It annoys me but not as much as his recent habit which is adding really attractive girls that he's never met. Should I be annoyed about this? After all it is only social media but it makes me feel terrible about myself. I've confronted him and he says it's all in my head. Self-conscious Girlfriend, Huntington Hey Self-conscious Girlfriend, what a

jerk. First things first, never let a man tell you that you are crazy because he's hurt your feelings. Pet hate, it's bang out of order. Secondly, Facebook is a place a lot of people go looking for self confidence. It could be that your boyfriend is highly insecure and needs female attention to feel validated – doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't love you or want to be with you. Just means he's a bit of a loser. I get your dilemma; dumping him because he kept on adding girls on Facebook is pushing it, but not a deal breaker. But if he dismisses your feelings this easily you need to ask yourself an important question: Will he care when you've had a bad day at work or say a family member is poorly? If he's usually a decent guy then I guess you need to have a grown up conversation, ask him to stop doing it and move on. Monitor carefully. Daph x

Dear Daphne, I recently got a friend of mine a job at my workplace. The trouble is she has been a nightmare. She has RUBBISH WORKMATE called in sick on several Monday's and has even just not showed up a couple of times too. My boss has mentioned it to me several times now and I don't know what to do. I like her as a person but she's a terrible coworker with no work ethic or conscience. J, Shipton You put your neck on the line for your friend when you got her a job. It's doesn't look like she respects you enough to even turn up on time. What a

24TH OCT 22ND NOV

L to R: Gordon Ramsay, Hillary Clinton, Joel McHale & Maggie Gyllenhaal

A potentially tense time between mothers and their sons, and on more than one occasion during November, there will be friction and disagreement with family circles as it becomes increasingly apparent that different people want different things. There are solutions to be found, but not without some compromise and good will.

There are some financial restrictions making their presence felt around the 5th which probably won’t get sorted out until after the 10th or 11th. After that, although it is not a case of plain sailing, a greater quality of fiscal flexibility makes itself felt. This is not a good time to incur major new debts, rather you need to be paying off a few old ones!

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV-21ST DEC

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN

AQUARIUS 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

A very rewarding month for career minded people who have specific targets and ambitions. You may expend a lot of energy getting what you want, but there is profound satisfaction in knowing that it will be worth it in the end. The 3rd to the 8th is a bright time for financial affairs – and the 17th is good for the other sort!

A couple of domestic decisions need to be made, and when you dither and drag your heels, a lover or partner may become annoyed and frustrated. Feminist agendas seem to dominate throughout the month, which again will not go down well with the menfolk around you. Capricorn guys put their heads in the sand.

If you are offered a short cut as a means of getting to the end, well, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! Aquarian ladies feel the urge to spend money and socialise, but gentlemen of the sign are much more circumspect, hanging on to their cash for the rainy day. Pregnancies and grandchildren seem to have a key role to play.

Potentially a sexy month as someone seeks to seduce you with compliments and suggestive words. Depending on who you are, this could be great news or a terrible embarrassment… either way, don’t be too quick to say no when someone offers you an opportunity to get a bit more fun and love out of life.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR Travel has a role to play this month,

TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST MAY A busy and productive month, and although there doesn’t seem to be any extra cash in the kitty, you will take pleasure and satisfaction from work routines, especially if you’re involved with anything creative and artistic. Electrical faults within the home will cause inconvenience and moods of frustrations.

GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN Carrying on from last month, this continues to be a period of healing heartaches, and great strength is supplied by a lover or partner who will be doing their best to convince you that your future has more to offer than your past. To be sure, there are some challenges to be faced, but you do not have to face them alone.

CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL You will come into contact with someone who has caused you great hurt in your history. You might not enjoy this, but it is still a worthwhile experience. Good cash outlook

between the 9th and 18th, and this could be the right time to start a new job or commit yourself to new responsibilities.

Leo ladies will be approached by someone who wants to “help” www.blushweddingsuk.com 07949 133759 them – the trouble is, they’ll want something in return, even if they deny it at the time. So, careful girls, careful! In the quest for love Leo guys should stop beating about the bush and try the direct approach. This might not guarantee success, but it will help.

VIRGO 24TH AUG - 22ND SEP A very positive month for guys and girls alike who have targets and ambitions. No short cuts, but you will be given the opportunity to work hard for what you want and a lot of progress will be made. Mid-month journeys tie in with extra cash in the bank towards the month’s end.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT Reunions, homecomings, and celebrations… all combine to bring deep feelings of satisfaction and security. With regard to long term ambitions, you need to remember that although Rome was not built in a day, it was built and parts of it are still standing.aTake your a time dvertori l and remember that things have their season.

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: ROWNTREE PARK As small, picturesque, and interesting as it is, it is nice to get out of the city centre once in a while. For an escape that is but a stone's throw from the daily hustle and bustle of city living, Rowntree Park is the perfect sanctuary. But how did it get started, and why is there a park named after that chocolate bloke on the other side of town to his factory? This is why...

NOWT THERE Take a look at the ever-useful online 1852 map of York and you'll see there is a great big nothing on the site of the present park. Like seriously, nada – from Bishopthorpe Road right to the edges of the River Ouse. Those empty fields, which were on the Ouse's southern flood plain (!), were crying out for development, and in 1919 philanthropist Joseph Rowntree instigated just that.

18

After purchasing a chunk of that empty land, Joseph's plan was to create a huge public park, to act both as a memorial to the 200 Rowntree factory workers who were killed or severely injured in the First World War, and to benefit the people of York by giving them a recreation space. We shall say nothing here about the proximity of the rival Terry's chocolate factory just around the corner from the site, and the fact that the land was a prime target for future Terry's expansion. Not a word at all.

MEMORIAL Because it's pretty hard to cast doubt upon the good intentions of a chap like Joseph Rowtree, who did so many great things for the city and the people of York (and, thanks to the Joseph Rowntree Trust, continues to do so). He employed his nephew Fred Rowntree to design the park and, once completed in 1921, he handed over the deed to the city during a grand opening ceremony.

Joseph said it would be “a quiet, restful memorial park, rather than another stone obelisk”. For fans of York parks history, all of the trees and shrubs were supplied by the James Backhouse Nurseries, now West Bank Park in Holgate. The original park's layout has changed very little during the past 95 years, although we have lost a few interesting amenities. Where today there are tennis courts near to the Reading Rooms Cafe, there was once huge aviaries filled with rare and tropical birds. Pheasants, parrots, and macaws all squawked away happily, while visitors could get up close to the cages and peer in. Tragically, many birds perished during a flood in the 1930s. We weren't joking about that damn flood plain...

SPLISH SPLASH The original park also boasted an open air swimming pool! This might not be news to some older readers, as it was only closed

YORK LIFE

and demolished in the 1980s to huge public uproar. People could take a dip come rain or shine, changing in cubicles around the edge of the pool. But, again, swimming baths so close to a constantly flooding river might not have ticked all the boxes of a health inspection, so we can understand their removal.

One highlight of the park that wasn't present when it first opened (as well as the basketball courts, open air theatre, and skate park, obviously) are the ornate iron gates on the River-side entrance. These huge gates were donated to the park by the Rowntree factory in 1955 and actually date from 1715. Originally designed for Ritchings Park in Buckinghamshire, they, and the tree-lined avenue along the river, were installed as a memorial to the people of the city who suffered during the Second World War. Let's just hope there will be no more need for World War memorials on this site, eh?

LODGINGS What today is the Reading Room Cafe, managed by Explore York, was originally intended to be a cafe, and also the home of the park warden. One of the first in the job was James 'Parky' Bell, who lived in the lodge with his wife and four children in the 30s and 40s. Mr Bell had something of a reputation for being strict. In an interview with The Press in 1993, Betty Metcalf said of Mr Bell: “You couldn’t bat an eyelid in there; I was told off for catching tiddlers in the lake! He also opened and closed the gates promptly, so you had to do as you were told.” Whatever his true intentions were for snapping up the land, it is clear that Joseph Rowntree has left a real mark on the landscape of York and all of us, creating a place in which generations have grown up having fun. Plus he invented all that chocolate. What a guy... HAVE ANY STORIES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? LET US KNOW!

YORK LIFE //Music Corner// KRYSTAL LIKES CATS NOW....

WHO: Birdy WHERE: The Barbican WHEN: 2nd November 2016 INFO: Birdy’s headline tour hits York in November. Birdy is best known for her haunting cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Skniny Love’ which shot the 19 year old to fame. She has also written music for The Hunger Games and won A LOT of awards for a 19 year old singer.

22

The biggest reaction to a column I ever got was from ‘the one about cats’. In the office that's all we refer to it as. It needs no explanation. You might not remember ‘the one about cats’, as you probably didn't get the angry emails and letters about it afterwards. So to recap, I wrote a column about why I didn't like cats. To be honest I was petrified of them. Anyway it turns out that cat owners are as loyal as they come and just basically don't say stuff about cats because people really don't like it and will send you angry letters. Yeah anyway so back to the story: JUST IMAGINE MY HORROR, when my little brother turned up home with a cat that needed somewhere to live. She was eight months old, a tiny black

and white cat with short fur and and a little black tash. I edged around the living room and played it cool. The little mite was pegging it from one corner of the house to the other and hiding under pieces of furniture and defying gravity. The thing is with animals, they seem to know when people don't like them – it makes us seem much more interesting to cats than your average cat loving human being. I retreated to my room to mind my own business and then this happened: She sauntered in and sat down behind me and feel asleep. Cats are a lot less scary when they're asleep. I have named the cat Pawdrey Hepburn. She will not leave me alone, she lays on my chest when I'm in bed,

she sits on my shoulder (yeah seriously my shoulder) when i'm chilling on the sofa. She sits by the chopping board when i'm trying to cook – I don't for one second think this one is because she likes me. Seriously i'm not that naïve. She meows at me when I get home from work and she also meows when I try to go to the loo or take a shower. So I guess I've softened after all of her hard work trying to wear me down. Sometimes when i'm eating fish fingers I put one in for her. I take her to the vets and I actually went twos with mum on her vaccines – then she pooed in my car. Was great, really good bonding session. I've spent hours not daring to move when she's on my lap because I think

longer. But I kind of like her so i'm not mentioning it at the moment and we're getting on just fine. So this is kinda my way of saying they're not as bad as I thought – well mine isn't anyway. So I probably owe other cat lovers an apology, I hadn’t had a cat of my own and I just didn’t get it. She's sassy and fabulous and her fur is soft and I find it totally cute and funny when she meows at me. The dead mouse gift wasn't cute though.

YORK LIFE

it would be tight to wake her up – seriously i've been bursting for the loo but not moved an inch. She doesn't mind being picked up – this is great when my friends come round, I casually pick her up and show off about being one with cats now – they have all been very surprised and impressed. Next week Pawdrey is back at the vets, little does she know – and it's time for her to get neutered so I guess we're not going to be friends for much

Advertising is kind of our thing here at Your Local Link – it's what allows us to pop this wicked little mag through your door every month. So naturally working here, having originally cut my teeth on ad setting, I'm always interested in any kind of marketing or advertising. Clothing giant, H&M has released it's latest advertising campaign for Autumn/Winter 2016 and I think it's sensational. It's honestly one of the most wonderful, accurate and uplifting television adverts i've seen in my whole life. The advert, which features a cover of the song 'She's a Lady' redefines what it means to be a woman. It features women with shaved heads, women

with tummy's that aren't washboard, transgender women and lesbians. It's diverse and it shows women doing things that women actually do – it's not pillow fights in slinky pyjamas or swirling round on a beach. It's sat at home with a takeaway for one, it's the daily commute – it's making decisions for ourselves whether it's embracing armpit hair, weight lifting or pursuing a career regardless or ethnicity, age or size. I'm so glad that we're finally heading towards a place where the expectations of society are becoming more realistic – there’s still a way to go – but this ad feels like a blummin good place to start.

TREASURE HUNT

Many times in these Treasure Hunts we've led you on a merry wander about the historical sights and hidden alleys of the main part of town. However, we've yet to lead you about 'the other side'; around Micklegate and South Bank. Until today!

STEP 4

Double back on yourself and head down Barker Lane to the left. Keep going, cross over Micklegate (watch the traffic!) and enter Trinity Lane. • Whose rectory? • Whose well? • Who founded The Mount School around here? Turn right onto Bishophill Junior. Head toward the church. • What is the surname of the couple who died (and then were buried) just three months apart? Note the use of “relict” to mean widow. • Enter the churchyard itself. There's a whole family in one grave, buried from 1819 until 1849. What was their name?

STEP 5

Leave the church yard, continue to the right, and then turn left onto Lower Priory Street.

• Which monarch is remembered with her own Bar?

Turn left into Victor Street. • Which shop probably no longer has anything for sale? • Which ball becomes a bit blurry after a few drinks?

At the end of the street, cross over the road and enter Bishophill Community Garden. • Just a quickie... but who died in a railway collision in 1851?

STEP 8

Ceramic & porcelain tiles. Glass & Mosaic tiles.

24

Walk through the archway and throw a left onto Bar Lane. • Which famous railway man is remembered by a house around here? • Where do they make the beer? • What other famous railway man is also honoured by a house?

STEP 2

STEP 7

Continue on Toft Green, passing the Hampton Hotel on your left. • According to the huge quote, what has no ending?

STEP 6

STEP 3

STEP 1

Start by the outside of Micklegate Bar, looking through the archways into the city. Nice, isn't it? • Who saved the city from destruction following it's surrender after the Siege of York? • Name the dog instructed to “Bite him”.

Reproduction Victorian tiles. Adhesive, grout, tiles, plus everything to get the job done.

YORK LIFE

Come back out of the gardens, and turn immediately to your left to enter Carr's Lane. • After whom might this street be named? • Carry on along the alley until you come to a gateway to the right. Enter it into the grounds of Middleton's Hotel, which was built when, exactly?

STEP 10 Exit the hotel through the gateway onto Skeldergate, then

continue on the street to the left. We've covered this part of the city before, so carry on all the way over Bridge Street, then onto North Street. • What stone technologies? • Which mighty Yorkshire dog is honoured around here?

STEP 11

Enter the North Street garden on the right side of the street, and walk until you are directly opposite the Guildhall on the other side of the river. Why? Because, from where you started at Micklegate, to the site of the Guildhall, is a straight line that once was occupied by the Roman road through the Colonia (where the civilians lived) to the legionary fortress (where the soldiers lived) on the opposite bank. Where you're standing was once a bridge, the first ever bridge, that carried Emperors into the city. Ahh, history...

Now go forth and explore more!

MAKING OF A ROCK GOD Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

Recently my six year old daughter started piano lessons. Every Friday morning a lovely lady comes round to the house, and together they play on the keyboard, learning tunes. It all looks like a lot of fun, and differs completely from my own experience of learning the piano. Because, unlike my daughter, I didn't want to learn. Let me explain: I was ten and deciding which musical instrument I could learn to become a rock star. I had come to the conclusion that singing wasn't enough; I had to be able to play something as well so as not to be labelled the pretty-boy front man. Then I saw it: a keytar.

THE AXE

It looked like a cool piano; one you played while standing up and holding it like an electric guitar. “Mum. I really want this,” I said, indicating the instrument in the Argos catalogue. “What is it?” asked mum. “It's a keytar,” I explained. “I really want it.” Quickly assessing her facial expression and level of brow-

26

crumpledness, I added: “I need it. For a school thing. Keyboard club! I want to join.” I didn't. All I knew of my school's keyboard club was that it was full of squares who voluntarily gave up lunchtimes to play the keyboard. While sitting down. Loserville. And so, later that week, we purchased the muchcoveted keytar. The box it came in carried a picture of what appeared to be a blond-haired boy from California. Either Californian boys are a lot smaller than Doncastrian boys, or the instrument turned out to be a lot smaller than I had imagined. Also, I had assumed I could instantly play it by simply 'standing in a cool pose' and 'being cool'.

It seemed that coolness alone did not a Rock God make... so I actually stated to attend keyboard club. But here I was let down by my new instrument. Whereas all the other attendees of the club had full-sized keyboards, mine was essentially a tuneless toy. The teacher suggested I come back next year with a better instrument.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES There followed a period of a couple of months in which, every Tuesday and Thursday, I would pack my keytar along with my regular bag, and head off to school leaving my parents to believe I had keyboard

club that lunchtime. I even occasionally went up to my room at night to “practice”, which involved hitting the demo song button and pretending it was me playing. Then, one day, one of the notes I brought home revealed that the keyboard club was staging a concert. When asked why I hadn't mentioned this before, I explained to my mum that I was not a part of the the concert, and that I would in fact be leaving the keyboard club. Over “creative differences”. She was cross. “Right, you can have proper piano lessons! I'll call Mrs. Simpson.” Mrs. Simpson was the old lady who lived around the corner who taught all the local kids piano. Every Tuesday evening at 4pm my mum would drive me up to her house, and I would sit, upright, at a piano for half an hour and use my fingers to make awful sounds. Awful. Sounds. I had piano lessons every Tuesday for two years and never advanced beyond a book called 'Teaching Little Fingers to Play' despite my fingers being quite large.

and self-loathing happened because I wasn't honest. I should have just said to my mum, “I really want this keytar. Just to play with and pretend to be something and someone else for a bit. Then I'll probably get bored and leave it under my bed for years, or break it while playing army and pretending it's a gun. Because I'm ten, and that's what ten year olds do.” It is for that reason that we've had a keyboard sitting in the house for the past three years, just for the kids to play with. Then one day our daughter asked for lessons, not because we pushed her, or because she was making excuses for something, but because she seemed genuinely interested in learning. She might take lessons for years, becoming a pianist and professional musician. Or she might quit next week and commit all her time to drawing black-eyed monsters. Who knows, its up to her.

THE INTERVIEW

Dear Wendy...

After wowing York with his latest theatrical creation, playwright Mike Kenny talks about Underneath a Magical Moon, performed by tutti frutti at York Theatre Royal and now on a national tour. Hello. Who are you? I'm Mike Kenny. I'm a playwright and I live in York. Awesome. How did you get started writing plays? Almost by accident. I worked for nearly ten years in the Theatre in Education company at the old Leeds Playhouse. We used to devise plays and tour schools in Leeds. After that, I was freelancing as an actor, and between jobs I began to write plays. I had started a family by then and it enabled me to stay at home. After a few years the writing took over from the acting. What is Underneath a Magical Moon all about? It's the story of Peter Pan, told from the point of view of Wendy.

Interesting. What attracted you to write something based on such a well known tale? I wish I could claim to have had the idea, but it was actually Wendy Harris, the director of tutti frutti who came to me and asked me to work on it. She had always had a fascination for the character, as she was named after her!

an animation, a Panto, and a musical. I think it can bear retelling many times in many different ways. What can audiences expect from the show? Lots of fun, wonderful music, and songs. The well loved story is all there, but told from a quirky point of view. The thing about Peter Pan that

everyone remembers is that he is the boy who never grew up. Well, the rest of us have to. So I guess it's a play about who we are and who we might grow into. Growing up isn't actually all that bad, and we can take a lot of things from our childhood with us.

Can you tell us about your version of the classic story? The story has suffered many indignities over the years, in all its many incarnations, but it does seem to survive. I think that's because it's such an amazing story, a bona fide children's classic. I particularly love it, because as a children's playwright myself, Peter Pan started its life as a play, before it became a book, a film,

What's next on the horizon for you (apart from the second star to the right)? At Christmas, my new version of Alice in Wonderland is on at Derby Theatre. But before that, I'm in Ireland with a new piece for children about the Easter Rising, and in France, with a play about child refugees. Cheers Mike!

Why do you mainly write for children and not adults? I truly don't know the answer. To be honest I get this question asked quite often and I don’t really understand what motivates it. And I’m not sure what answer is expected. When I worked in an office in the City, which was frankly the most soul rotting thing I ever did, nobody ever asked me why. I wonder if anyone asks the question of JK Rowling or Walt Disney. If the implication is that there's something lesser about work for children, then I would refute it. I actually think it is a vocation. It is my passion and I would discourage anyone to whom it doesn't come naturally.

superpower of choice. Years ago I went scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and it is as close to flying as it's possible to get. I loved it. If I could actually fly I'd start from York, go over the Minster and head for the Coast. It's a landscape I love from ground level anyway. I imagine it's spectacular from the air.

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp

Go where your clients are Midsummer 2007, Apple launched the iPhone and changed mobile phones forever. January 2014, the number of people visiting websites using their mobile devices overtook that from people using desktop computers. So here we are, in the mobile Internet world of our dreams. Do you use QR codes, those square blocks of black and white dots you sometimes see on posters? If you download a QR code reader app to your mobile and scan the QR code attached to this article it will take you to my website and, magically, I will know that your visit came from this column and I will be able to track how many sales I eventually made from my marketing investment. Remember “half of my marketing is a waste of money .. I just don’t know which half”? Well, now you do. Wherever you place a real-world ad (for instance, when you advertise here), use a QR code to make it easier for people to visit your website

30

MODE RN MARKE TI NG F OR BUSY BUSI N ESSES

and for you to work out which bits of your marketing are working.

of traffic to your best selling products. Optimise for that.

Shall we check if your website is mobile friendly? Google provides a website mobile-readiness checker here https://testmysite. thinkwithgoogle.com/ just enter your website address and it will tell you all the things you can improve. It’s a bit technical but it makes a great to-do list for your web developer. Here’s what’s significant about it. Google is telling you how it ranks websites, how to get to the top of search where you’ll be able to bathe in the warmth of free customers. Adapting to mobile matters.

Mobile users are different. They are commuting, waiting for the dentist, out on the town, on a train with hours to kill or seconds away from the start of the movie and they just need to ..

But there’s more to this.

Mobile users are more likely to be in the later stages of decision making, doing final checks such as “are you accessible”, “do you do gluten free”, “can I bring my dog”, “do you accept credit cards?” Put those answers up front in your mobile layout.

There’s no room for clutter on a website built for mobile and that forces you to focus. Isn’t that interesting? If Google Analytics is set up on your website you can see which of your website pages are most popular, for which search terms you get found, even where you make your money. Apply Pareto (80% of your results come from 20% of your pages/traffic/ marketing) to work out the main flow

Mobiles know where they are and where they are heading. The person 200 yards from your restaurant probably needs to know how to find you. The person 2 miles away in the evening probably wants to know if you deliver; in the afternoon, to book a table. Make sure your phone number is clickable.

Implement one-click social media sharing. Display a QR code in your window, on your menu, at the paydesk, around your shop, or your products

to encourage people to follow you, friend you, and get in touch. Use them to implement a one-click reordering system. Yes QR codes are ugly. Yes your graphic designer will wriggle. But it makes things easier for the customer. Mobile connectivity is something many have dreamed of for years. It’s here. Make it easy for people. John Allsopp is a freelance marketer. He was a PR guy from 1981 until 2000 when he went to Scarborough campus and got a first class degree in Internet Computing. He built websites until online marketing became a thing. Nowadays he offers marketing director services to businesses that are not ready to employ someone full time and he offers content marketing services (SEO, social media, traffic generation, PR), websites that work and general marketing advice and help through surgemarketing. co.uk john@ johnallsopp. co.uk / 01723 376477

SPORT REPORT

with Dan Tait

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A MONTH MAKES. When I wrote my last column we had a new England manager with a 100% winning record, and York City were around mid-table. Fast forward a few weeks and Big Sam Allardyce decided to try and gain an extra £400,000 for some dodgy dealings (because his £3million year wages weren’t enough) and Jackie McNamara’s reign as York City manager finally ended after a rather dismal year in charge. Allardyce for the record earned £550,685 for his 67 days as England manager, and rumours are rife that he will be one of the new hosts of Bake Off, given he will do anything for a bit of extra dough.

34

Temporary replacement Gareth Southgate got his international managerial career off to a winning start with a 2-0 win over the mighty Malta. Fans were still evidently frustrated with one person tweeting that they were “gonna turn over to Strictly in a minute so I can see someone finish off a move”.Resident ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley did his best to talk up the opposition, commenting that the centre midfielder pulling the strings works in a cafeteria!

Back to York City, and I must be one of the few that actually felt a bit sorry for Jackie McNamara. Don’t get me wrong, his record of wins and performances on the pitch didn’t warrant anything other than his departure; two out of the three away games I have seen this season we have lost 6-1! But I am certain it wasn’t for lack of trying on his part and it’s hard to argue that little luck has gone his way during the past year, almost like a litter of black cats had crossed his path. Not just from his name lending itself to support backlash, (“Sackie

Sacknamara”), or the tweets criticising him picking up a new car (again leading to comments like “Audi hell has he still got a job?”), or even the widely reported story of him train-fare dodging after being unable to pay for a train ticket onboard (which, upon reading, sounded like anyone could make that mistake). To top it all off against Guiseley, a side who hadn’t won all season, scored four goals in twenty minutes, a York supporter invaded the pitch intent on confronting the luckless Scotsman. Luckily two stewards stopped a potentially dangerous situation before escorting him off the pitch….walking him right past Jackie McNamara!

YORK LIFE

No light at the end of the tunnel I think it will take a few of us a little while to get over the Guiseley humiliation. It says something that the brightest part of the game was the hour spent in complete darkness as the floodlights failed at 4-1. Each attempt, of which there were about nine during the hour of their failure, were greeted with a goallike cheer but unfortunately a local electrician, and possible Guiseley fan, got the lights on. Our Yorkshire rivals completed the embarrassment and it was evident that Jackie’s time at the club was coming to an end, and further jokes were made at his expense, like “Taxi for McNamara…

pre-paid of course!” At time of writing York City are between managers but a number of people seem to be throwing their hats in the ring based on ‘success’, either on Football Manager or the latest FIFA game. It feels like more people are happy to play a video game than watch football down the ground these days, with one bloke given an ultimatum from a longsuffering girlfriend who snapped at his obsession with creating history as Mansfield Town, stating “it’s me or the XBOX!” but even she didn’t expect: “give me eight minutes and I'll help pack your bags”.

Finally, it was such a shame Yorkshire couldn’t retain the Championship title for a third consecutive season, and give Jason Gillespie a winning sendoff. Without chewing too hard on the sour grapes, I don’t think it went unnoticed by supporters that Johnny Bairstow, the England player not on a central contract and having not played a cricket for 16 days, was not allowed to play so he could rest ahead of the

England tour of Bangladesh. Even more galling was that he wanted to play and help Yorkshire achieve something not done for over 50 years, and others in the same England touring squad, including Middlesex seamer Stephen Finn, played in the same round of fixtures. Andrew Strauss was a key decision maker, and no prizes for guessing which county he played for.

BUT DID HE KISS HIS MUM? Ah, the DeLorean; an awful car made famous for a fantastic reason, namely being the time travelling vehicle from the Back to the Future films. As all fans of the cinematic trilogy know, the crucial speed to hit to activate the time circuits in the Flux Capacitor, is 88mph... but according to one recent news story, that might not work. Nigel Mills from Essex was slapped with a speeding ticket after being caught on camera going 18mph over the speed limit along the A12 in his classic DeLorean. Yes, that’s 88mph! Talking to The Guardian, Mills said the road was completely clear, so he felt a bit miffed about the ticket. What he didn’t say is if he managed to actually travel back in time. Did he have to get his parents to fall in love at their High School ball? Did he have to fend off the bully? Did he have to fend off the amorous attention of his own mum, thinking him just another handsome high schooler? Who knows. Thinking about it, that film was mental, wasn’t it?

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that most petrol-heads across the world know the name Jeremy Clarkson. After being fired from the BBC’s Top Gear a while back (and taking co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond with him), Jeremy has been working on a new motoring show for online streaming channel Amazon Prime. The show, called The Grand Tour, which focusses on the trio having silly adventures in various kinds of cars around the world, will premiere on 18th November with a special 70 minute episode. Future episodes will be available to stream online every Friday following. We’re guessing that the pilot episode will feature a few jokes at Chris Evans’ expense, after he recently quit the BBC’s rebooted (and much maligned) version of Top Gear. Oh Chris...

Many motorists will be more than familiar with Google’s Maps and Streetview as a way of navigating to somewhere. Being able to actually ‘drive’ to your destination in Streetview before even getting in your car is exceptionally handy, and you might have noticed how Goggle blur the faces of the people captured in the online images. Well, according to images from around the River Cam in Cambridge, that consideration of privacy extends to cows. In this image taken from Streetview it seems that a cow’s face has been blurred out as well, presumably to preserve her anonymity. You don’t know, maybe she was out by the river meeting a lover for a passionate punt along the Cam. Maybe. Either way, motorists can rest easy that their very human faces will definitely be caught by the blurring filter... no matter what you’re up to.

These tips from the Institute of Advanced Motoring should help to keep safe on the roads when the weather turns chilly. •

The most important thing to consider is whether your journey is necessary. Don't ignore police warnings about bad conditions on certain routes and only travel in icy conditions if you absolutely have to.

Triple your distance between you and the car in front. If it is icy then your stopping distance will be greatly increased.

If driving through snow, make sure to get your speed correct; too fast and you might loose control, too slow and you risk losing momentum.

When getting the car going for the first time that day start gently and don't over rev. Stay in a higher gear if you can to increase your control.

• Only use your brake in a real emergency. If you can steer to avoid trouble, do so. This will reduce the risk of skidding out of control.

AUTOS

NDY’S

• If possible take the busier roads as these are usually gritted and better maintained. If you find yourself skidding the most important thing to do is leave the pedals alone and concentrate on steering to correct yourself.

ART DECO CHRISTMAS

That popular holiday in December is nearly here: Christmas is a great time for reflection and talking about hopes for the new year. As we look towards the future, we fancy dining in the past with an Art Deco themed dinner table. Art Deco began in the 1920s in Europe, but it wasn’t an exclusive trend: by 1930 it was accessible to the majority through mass manufacturing. Geometric patterns in metallics and strong streamlined shapes are the key to achieving this trend. Solid blocks of colour provide the ideal background to sharp patterns. Keep an eye out for stepped profiles, zig zags, lighting bolts and chevrons. They are the pattern essentials.

GETTING SMART

Matt Todd reports from RETRA (Radio, Electrical and Television Retailers Association) Conference 2016 The theme of the conference this year was the Smart Connected Home; what is one, why would anyone want one, and how would they get one? I have to say that currently I see a rush from many manufacturers to make sure their products are included in the line-up of internet connected “things” and there is a real danger that the technology is shoe horned in for no other reason than they can. Conversely there are already a few key Smart products that everyone should take a look at and a whole load more should be here in the next twelve months. So, what’s worth looking out for? Smart products are defined by their ability to connect to the internet but increasingly they are also learning your habits, bad and good, in order to save you time, money or physical input. I am really impressed with the current crop of smart thermostats like NEST and HIVE that you can set from your smartphone but, further to that, will learn what time you will leave and return home and adjust the heating accordingly. This is of real world value

because it could help you save significantly on your energy bills.

LET THERE BE LIGHT For labour saving and ease of use there are some really effective Smart lighting solutions with blind or curtain control. Lighting scenes can be effectively adjusted with the press of a button so that with one press the home cinema lighting from lamps and ceiling spot lights could be dimmed and the curtains closed ready for the film to begin. As a further benefit with all these smart devices they can be programmed to operate even when you are out so that the security conscious can make it look as though their home is occupied even when it isn’t. Put all these devices together with a Smart TV and sound system and you are most of the way to having a Smart Connected Home. Whether you will then have any desire to operate your dishwasher or cooker hood from the other side of the world though, is still up to you...

WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN DURING NOVEMBER The Vegetable Garden • Raspberry canes and fruit trees are now available for planting. • Apply grease bands to fruit trees to protect from winter moth. Lawns • Rake fallen leaves off lawns regularly to avoid blocking out light and moisture from the grass. • Avoid walking on frost covered lawns in the mornings as this can damage the grass and cause brown marks. • If putting lawn mowers away for the winter, ensure they are clean and dry before storing and fuel is drained. Ponds • Net ponds to prevent leaves falling in and fouling the water. • Feed fish in mild spells if they are still active. Trees and Shrubs • Hedging plants are now available for planting. • Now is the ideal time to plant roses, but avoid planting in areas where roses have previously grown to avoid ‘rose sickness’. • Protect newly planted trees and shrubs from the wind and cold. The Flower Garden • November is the last chance to plant out winter bedding. Plant in well prepared ground or pots. • Finish planting bulbs for the spring. Hyacinths can still be forced to give a good display into the New Year. • Any perennials that are past their best should be cut back now. Leave any that have ornamental seed heads as these can add interest during the winter months. • Raise pots and containers onto feet or bricks to avoid them sitting in the wet.

The Greenhouse • Check and service greenhouse heaters in preparation for the first frosts. • Any plants that are being over-wintered in the greenhouse should be inspected on a regular basis for signs of pest or disease. • Ensure greenhouses are cleaned to reduce overwintering pests and diseases.

TALK THE TALK The RSPB York Branch will host an illustrated talk entitled 'Living the Dream – Becoming a Wildlife Guide in Spain', given by Julian Sykes. Catch it for yourself at Fountains Lecture Theatre, York St. Johns University, on 16th November at 7.30pm. n Call 492494.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

Now that winter is on the way it is a good time to plant a tree. Could you recommend some nice trees for my garden, with nice stems, flowers, shape, and colour. Also ones that may be good for winter birds.

slender, lance-shaped pointed green leaves become yellow in Autumn. Sorbus 'Joseph Rock' is one of the best rowans. 'Joseph Rock' has the characteristic vase-shaped crown that spreads with age. Its rich green, regularly divided leaves colour brilliantly in autumn, when the yellow berries, carried in drooping bunches, ripen. So plant a tree this winter – it will be a companion for life, and grow as you grow!

Amelanchier 'Lamarckii' is a superb tree which has two main seasons of interest; Spring, when the bushy growth is a mass of white blossom, and Autumn, when this tree is ablaze with red and orange foliage. It is one of the most reliable trees for autumn colour. Malus 'Red sentinel' is one of the best fruiting crab apples for the smaller garden. This develops a compact, rounded crown, with white flowers that are borne in the Spring. The Autumn clusters of glossy-skinned, cheery-like fruits mature to bright red, lasting well into winter. Prunus Cheals Weeping Cherry is a low-domed, small weeping Japanese cherry tree that is very popular in gardens where space is of a premium. In Spring, the arching and pendent branches are crowded with bright pink, double flowers. Prunus 'Surola' features mahogany-red polished and peeling bark which makes it one of the most popular of all cherry trees. Small, inconspicuous white flowers are produced in Spring, and the

best left unpruned. They are very susceptible to dieback, which pruning can encourage. Daphne odora ‘aureomarginata’ tolerates light trimming to maintain a compact habit, as does Daphne cneorum. Daphne mezereum may withstand the removal of more wayward shoots. As a general rule it is better to layer a wayward shoot of prostrate Daphne than remove it. In all cases, however, dieback must be removed as soon as it is seen. Remove the entire stem or branch, cutting back to its point of origin, and treat the plant with a fungicide. A few species, such as Daphne jezoensis are summer-deciduous. Their leaf fall should not be mistaken for dieback. Daphnes are best planted in a sheltered position, in full-sun to part shade, but they dislike dry soils and like a free root run, but also hate waterlogging. Mulch in spring with well-rotted organic matter to keep the roots cool, but keep the mulch away from the main stem. Daphnes are deep-rooting and may not thrive in containers. If growing one on a container, choose a deep vessel and use a mix of equal parts John Innes No. 3 and coarse sharp sand. I hope this helps

Could you please tell me what is wrong with my Daphne odora marginata, as the lower leaves are yellowing and dropping off. I have had it for 18 months, it is in a large ceramic pot and well cared for. However, it didn’t flower in February this Makeovers year.

THE PRINCE OF PUMPKINS TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. plants once growing, but I do dig manure under the area where each plant is set out. Watering is advisable in dry weather but otherwise the plants require no special attention. In the last few weeks orange pumpkins have been piled high in the shops. Nearly all of these are sold for carving; the seeds and flesh scooped out and often thrown away. Hopefully, some of the innards will end up as pumpkin pie, soup or otherwise cooked. Pumpkins, after all, are one of the most versatile vegetables. Not only do they have lots of culinary uses, but they are also one of the easiest crops to grow in the garden. Although I grow a number of different medium sized orange pumpkins I’m not one for growing behemoths. The world record is an incredible 1,054 kg, set not in America as you might think, but Switzerland. Last year someone nearby grew a 127kg monster but I don’t think Yorkshire will ever challenge the world record. Better to concentrate on more

modest sized types that are easy to grow and good in the kitchen.

ROYALTY Probably my favourite pumpkin is a variety called Crown Prince. This is a grey skinned type with rich orange flesh. A trailing plant, each can produce two or three fruits up to 4kg in weight. As well as being excellent for soup, roasting, and pies, it will store for up to six months and so can be enjoyed throughout the winter and into early spring. As with all my pumpkins, I sow Crown Prince indoors in pots at the beginning of May, grow on in the greenhouse, and plant out at the end of the month or the start of June. Plants are spaced about 75cm apart and allowed to ramble so that by mid-summer there is a mass of weed suppressing foliage. I don’t feed the

HARVEST Crown Prince should be ready to harvest in September depending on the weather. The test of ripeness is to try pressing a finger nail into the skin. If you can’t make an indentation the fruit is mature and can be harvested. Cut with as long a stalk as possible and dry off if the fruit is damp. To store keep indoors rather than a garage or shed that will be too cold or damp. Try to avoid very warm conditions though; an unheated spare bedroom is ideal.

spreading plants like Crown Prince, a more restrained variety I grow is Gold Nugget. This is classed as winter squash, but will keep like a pumpkin. Its main advantage is that it is compact, like a courgette, but more prolific than trailing pumpkins,as six squash per plant are quite possible. Fruits are pale orange on the outside with orange-yellow flesh and usually weigh 500-800 grams, ideal for roasting whole in the oven. There are many other pumpkins and squashes that can be grown easily in York. Why they are not more widely grown is a mystery to me. A word of caution though: butternut types may be popular in the shops but, in my experience, do not like Yorkshire weather!

Transform your garden with artificial grass

WITH THINNING TREES AND SHRINKING BUSHES, November is a great time of year to spot hares – not rabbits. Brown hares don’t burrow like their smaller cousins, so can be

seen hiding in long grass on the edge of fields.

NOVEMBER IS ALSO A GOOD TIME TO SPOT MOSS GROWING. Varieties of all shapes, sizes, and colours can be found growing on trees, in the park, and in your lawn.

ALSO BE PREPARED TO WAVE GOODBYE TO A FEW FAMILIAR FACES (at least for four months or so) as finches and tits prepare to leave for the winter. All right for some, eh?

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

With autumn in full swing this month, there is a lot to see out there. • YET MORE FOREIGN ARRIVALS THIS MONTH, including many varieties of geese who come to Britain for a warmer winter. Also keep an eye out for whooper and berwick’s swans as they settle down into lakes and ponds for a break.

AN AUTUMN CLEAN? Spring clean, sure. But do you really need to clean at this time of year? You do if you take care of Rawcliffe Meadows, the huge nature reserve in Clifton. You can help them this month, as on 6th November there will be a work party to help clear fallen branches and protect the tansy from the cows. Brace yourselves, it's going to get sentimental. I can't express how grateful and blessed I am to have such wonderful kids. Leia has now gone to university, and is turning into a beautiful and intelligent young woman. Shay, is becoming a gorgeous, confident little boy too. He's so full of life, and finds himself hilarious (I wonder where he got that from). It amazes me how quickly they grow and what a journey parenthood has been for me so far, as you've all read. All was calm and then the terrible two's began to creep, and about four weeks too early if you ask me. Shay recently went to the National History Museum with his godparents, he came back with a new interest: dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are love, dinosaurs are now life. Last night he was practising his roars. When I asked what animal he was impersonating he looked at me

like I was daft and indignantly replied that it was, in fact, the roar of a dinosaur. So obviously mum thought it would be cool to join in. I did the biggest dinosaur roar I possibly could. This was a big mistake, catastrophic actually. Shay descended into the biggest temper tantrum I have ever seen in my life. He threw everything within his reach across the room including the remote control and proceeded to wail. I decided to try the ignore technique (if any other parents are still wondering: no, I'm not convinced the ignore technique works all that well either.) So this is my life now and this is what terrible twos look like. As per usual I've done a mountain of research to try and find the best ways to tackle the old temper tantrums. Reassuringly all of the articles I've read have agreed on one thing. Temper tantrums at this age are pretty normal. Most temper tantrums are sparked by frustration, as children get to this age they know what they want to do, but not necessarily how to do it which winds them up no end. I'm guessing Shay was gutted because, quite frankly, his roar didn't have a patch on mine. The long story short with temper

tantrums is not to reinforce the behaviour. So avoid laughing or confronting your toddler. Try to ignore the tantrum, and when it eventually passes provide reassurance and guidance. Teach them to express their feelings through words instead of wails. When we're out it's a different kettle of fish. I sweep him out of whatever situation we're in, take him somewhere quite and hug him until he stops – it's advisable not to give into any demands your little one might have though.

Ask us what our most treasured childhood memories are, and we'll all loudly shout PARTIES! Fun birthday parties have the potential to be amongst the best moments of a child's early life, as that is when their friends and family come together to celebrate them just for being them. Although the weather is

CANDLE BLOWING TIME!

turning to 'the dark side' at this time of year, it doesn't mean that birthday parties need to be contained to the inside of your house. Getting out and about in York with a gaggle of kids in tow is easy, with so many outdoors activities to take part in. A simple picnic in the park could turn into a fallen leaf fight, while hiring entertainers or magicians for some up-close performances outside could literally be magical. Boat trips on the river, a nature trail around the city, and even sports parties led by trainers and coaches could help keep everyone entertained for hours. Check out these pages for party suppliers, venues, and performers, and hopefully your little sprog will have a birthday they'll remember for ever. Oh, and save some cake for us, will you?

CHILD FRIENDLY RESTAURANT ALERT! For breastfeeding mums, going out can be a nightmare. On my maternity, Bills restaurant on Coney Street was my safe haven. It was a place where I could breastfeed in private and meet up with all my mummy friends and their little ones with helpful staff and no time limit on our stay. n Call 01904 623 548 to book a table or visit www.bills-website.co.uk

Back with bling! Great news, as one Yorkshire business has come back to the city after a break with added glam. Azendi have returned to York with a brand new jewellery boutique on Low Petergate, offering both traditional and modern pieces with an emphasis on design on quality. Using precious metals, freshwater pearls, and delicately cut stones, they have a huge range of items for every occasion; be it your wedding day or just your pay day! The expert staff can advise you on what to get, and they'll even gift wrap it for you – pretty good idea for this time of year! n Pop down to the store, or visit www.azendi.com

Birthdays at The Deep

If your little one is a lover of sea life, then The Deep is the perfect place to go for their birthday. The Deep offers some great birthday packages where you can pre book goody bags, lunch for the kids including five items for £3.50 and, during weekdays, you can even arrange for a sign to be held up during the daily dive show. Walmgate Day Nursery

Think of the bustling street of Walmgate, and you might not automatically imagine a warm, and playful place. But that is just what the children who attend Walmgate Day Nursery get, each and every day. Not only does the nursery boast it's own outdoor play area (yes, in the middle of the city!), but also three separate rooms for different ages of children to enjoy, including a baby room, a tweenies room, and a room for kids getting set to go up to big school. Praised by Ofsted, even immediately following the floods that so badly effected the street last year, Walmgate Day Nursery offers an informal yet stimulating environment which enables each child to develop skills and acquire knowledge at their own pace. Free to explore and follow their own interests, the children are encouraged and cared for by a dedicated team, each with years of

experience in childcare. Plus, if the kids aren't enjoying the facilities of the nursery itself, they're taking day trips out to the local museums and parks – a definite benefit of being so close to the city centre. n To find out more, and to enquire about available places for your own child, visit www.walmgatedaynursery.com

Declutter your home, declutter your mind TWO DECADES OF CHRISTMAS SWING!

LIFESAVING LEARNING

Mr Swing's Dance Orchestra is celebrating twenty years of Christmas Balls, raising funds for those affected by Multiple Sclerosis in York. These fabulous nights have now outgrown their old home at York St. John University, and will be held this year at Manor C of E Academy, on both 17th and 18th December. The venue will be transformed with giant icicles, snowflakes, and ever-changing Christmas presents with spell-binding lighting. Described as 'York's best kept Christmas secret', the nights will feature cool live music from the 13-piece swing band Mr Swing's Dance Orchestra, classic disco tunes, a magician, food, and also a cheap bar. There's even a fun Strictly Come Dancing competition! n To secure your tickets, call 615151 or email info@swingbanduk.com

The Royal Lifesaving Society's 'Save a Baby's Life' workshops are back with two new dates this month. Designed to give parents, parents to be, grandparents, and anyone involved with babies and young children, the confidence to cope in the unlikely event of a choking incident, spaces are available on 22nd November at York Explore Library, 10.30 am (call 552828), and on 17th December at The Hive, Manor School, 10am (call 795645). The workshops last about one and a half to two hours, and could one day save a wee one's life.

Autumn is the best time to get organised. Seriously; those colder, darker, rainier days are upon us now and so we start to feel like curling up inside hibernating. Spending some time tackling those jobs we all put off can really boost our sense of achievement and create a calm living space in which to relax as we spend more time inside. However, that is easier said than done, so why not turn to the expert? Hannah Young, of Revive Your Space, is a York based professional organiser who can help you get started by sorting out all that clutter now to prepare for Christmas well in advance. With Hannah's assistance you can avoid the last minute panic during the holidays and give yourself the gift of relaxation and fun during the festive season.

CARE AND CARE ALIKE

Happy days...

Bits and bobs for those who care for someone

SIGHT LOSS HELP If you, or someone you care for, are having difficulties around the loss of vision, this might help. If it is becoming too tricky to read the labels on food cans, you could try physically marking them for what they are. For example, wrap a single elastic band around cans of beans, while wrapping two about cans of tomatoes. You can also buy tactile sticky bumps which can be stuck to all sorts of food packets. As long as the person knows what each of the bumps and bands means, they should be able to find what they need.

GADGET CORNER WHERECOM UK GPS WATCH. This subtle little gadget acts just like a simple digital watch that can be worn by anyone. However, inside is a pay-as-you-go SIM card which allows someone else to track the location of the wearer. An SOS button can be hit at any time, and an alert is sent to the carer, popping up in a free app on their smartphone. Google Maps will immediately open, showing the exact location of the wearer so they can be picked up or met. As well as offering a model for adults, they also produce brightly coloured versions for children, to help parents keep a remote eye on their kids. n Visit www.wherecom.uk HIVE HOME. This smarthome system from British Gas features a wireless thermostat which can be controlled and programmed from the users’ smartphone. No matter where they, or their carer, are in the world, they can connect to control the heating in the house, as well as controlling other things like smartplugs and lights. Great for a carer to check the temperature of their loved one’s home, and also perfect for controlling the whole house from the comfort of an armchair. n Visit www.hivehome.com

CELTA

...at Happy Jay's! The nursery at Clifton Moor is happy to announce that, following their recent Ofsted inspection, they are rated Outstanding. The inspector praised the dedicated staff for providing “a rich, varied, and imaginative range of learning opportunities which enable children to make rapid progress as confident, enthusiastic learners.” It's no surprise to see why they were given such praise, as the awardwinning nursery offers children the chance to explore the fun in learning, and to embrace the seasons as they pass. They even hold a graduation ceremony for the kids going up to school, to recognise their growing achievements. n To find out more, call 479261 or visit www.happyjays.co.uk

KALME CHAMELEON CONCEALER

LOTIL CREAM Dubbed the bathroom cabinet essential, and we can see why, we’ve labelled it ‘the everywhere cream’ in the office. Face, hands, arms or legs; if it’s dry we’ve put it there and it has soothed and softened in no time. A brilliant all round basic moisturiser. £6.29 | www.boots.com This product is also stocked in independant chemists, the stockist number to call is: 01794 527433

We fell in love with this product, it’s amazing at covering spots and redness. This skin friendly product is free from parabens, perfumes and other nasty stuff you shouldn’t really put on your face. It’s great for those with sensitive skin. When you apply the product it’s green, and then it adjusts to your skin tone perfectly. It’s the happy medium between light texture and decent coverage. Krystal is wearing this everyday in the office. £19.95 | www.skinshop.com (Free next day delivery)

BEE VENOM DUO MOISTURISER & BEE VENOM FACIAL SERUM Bee venom helps to increase blood circulation, moving nutrients accross the skin. The moituriser takes a little help from Manuka honey for extra care too. Our faces felt firmer and looked brighter the following morning after two applications. Both products felt lovely upon application and sank in a treat. We used the products together for extra effect. 10/10 would buy again. RRP: £135 each www.skinchemists.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

ASK THE EXPERT

BEAUTY Q&A Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleen Zimri talks about how you can combat the signs of ageing, without the surgery procedure. Face lifts can be an unnecessary and scary step to take when in the pursuit of a younger looking face. For those who want their skin to appear tighter and more defined, Skin Doctor provides a treatment that can achieve these results without the hospital stay and general anaesthetic. Silhouette Soft produces natural looking results with a redefined face, restored volume and reduced wrinkles in just a 30-minute treatment by your doctor!

And a gradual and natural regenerating effect : in being absorbed, the component of the suture, polylactic acid allows to restore shapeliness to the face.

Q. What is Silhouette Soft? A. Silhouette soft is a non-invasive thread lift procedure using absorbable cone threads in the skin. Silhouette Soft® components are natural and fully absorbable. Polylactic acid, or PLA, has been used for many years in various pharmaceutical and medical applications, such as suture thread, orthopaedic pins, screws and nails for bone fractures. It is also used in new biodegradable stent trials. A facelift without the need for surgery!

Q. How long does it last and who is it recommended for? Q. What can you expect? A. Customers can expect a discreet and immediate lifting effect : as soon as the structure is applied, the doctor reshapes the treated area by means of a double action: compressing and elevating tissue.

A. SILHOUETTE SOFT® is recommended for men and women of 30 and over who are trying to combat effectively the signs of ageing, such as loose and wrinkled skin and do not want any heavy and invasive treatment, but are looking for real and natural results. The results will last up to 18 months to 2 years!

What areas can silhouette soft treat? Silhouette Soft® can be used to treat various parts of the face: contour, lower jaw, cheeks and cheekbones, eyebrows, neck.

With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. n Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.
