There's a new baby kitten at Starkey HQ. To say that I was scared to get a kitten would be an understatement. It would be the first time that I was solely responsible for a living being. I wasn't sure if I'd learnt enough, done enough, or if I was wise enough to look after a young creature yet. But since he's arrived, I haven't had time to think about it. He's gorgeous and petrifying, a total law unto himself.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

SKIPWITH AND ITS COMMON

This fairly short and entirely flat walk is mainly on Skipwith Common but includes a section through the nearby village and surrounding fields. The 650 acre Common is a National Nature Reserve. With its heathland, woodland and remnants of a past airfield it’s an unusual place with a remote feel. Despite this, most of the walk is on good paths, many with a firm surface. The walk follows a figure of eight pattern and could be divided into two shorter walks if preferred.

Directions

1 Starting from the Sands Lane car park, take the right hand path signed ‘anti-clockwise yellow walk’ going through a kissing gate into trees. Follow the sometimes indistinct path keeping the road to the right and a fenced open area to the left. Go through another kissing gate and, where the path divides, fork left to meet a track coming in from the road. Go left here with an open field visible through trees to the right. Continue to meet a tarmac track. Here turn right over a cattle grid. Soon, pass allotments and houses to arrive at Skipwith village green and pond.

2 Follow the main road ahead passing the Drovers Arms pub until the far side of the village hall on the left. Here take the signed permissive path going along the field edge parallel to the road to a stile in the right corner. Across the stile turn sharp left along the hedge with an open field to the right. Continue in the next field with a garden wall, then trees to the left. Where the path forks go left following a fenced path to emerge on the road by the church.

3 To visit the church, turn right but otherwise go left on the road for 100 metres to take a signed footpath on the right. Go ahead with a wooden fence to the right, then cross a stile to proceed with a hedge to the left. At the next field kink right then left with a hedge to the right. After a plank bridge, over a ditch by an oak tree, go left to a hand gate to enter the common.

4 Go right on a path marked by blue and yellow bands on a post. At a surfaced track: turn right, but in 100 metres where the track goes half left: keep straight on following blue/yellow markers on a post. The route now continues along the edge of the common with fields to the right. Ignore all ways off to the left following the yellow post markers. When a small open concreted area is reached, cross it to go through a hand gate to follow a narrower path through bracken and trees, but still with fields over to the right. At another kissing gate go ahead to a track. Turn right here but in 150 metres (about 50 metres before gates over the track ahead) find a kissing gate on the left marked by a yellow-banded post. Through the gate go ahead guided by a further post indicating the way through the bracken. Soon reach a track leading to a car park.

Miles

We suggest starting at Sands Lane car park south of Skipwith village. This is about 11 miles from central York. From York take the A19 to Escrick. Here fork left and continue to pass through Skipwith village to find the car park on the right after about half a mile. It is also possible to start the walk from the King Rudding Lane car park (begin at direction point 5) accessed from the A19 at Riccall. A limited bus service (no. 18 from York Merchantgate) runs to Skipwith village (no Sunday service). Alight at the village green and begin the walk from direction point 2.

Refreshments The only option is the Drovers Arms in Skipwith village, open lunchtimes Wednesday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

What to see Skipwith Common is a diverse landscape of woodland and open heathland with some marshy areas and ponds.

There’s a vast range of wildlife including deer and many specialist plants and insects. Ponies, cattle and sheep graze some areas to maintain the open heathland. Part of the site was a World War II airfield, remnants of which remain. Further information on the common and its history can be found on the Friends of Skipwith Common website at www.friendsofskipwithcommon.org.uk/. St. Helens church in Skipwith is notable for its ancient tower that is part Saxon in origin. Eventually, you arrive back at the point where the walk diverted off the track to follow the edge of the common (point 4). Keep ahead here following the outward route in the reverse direction for a short distance until a prominent track heads off half right.

5 Go into the car park and go left to exit on a narrow tarmac track by a large woodpile. Go through a metal kissing gate and cross a concrete area staying with the track until it bends left at a junction. Here there’s a choice: either shorten the walk (in which case go left with the track and follow directions from point 6 below) or continue on a kilometre circuit deeper into the common (in which case take the path to the right by a noticeboard and continue as follows). After 150 metres, at a propeller on a plinth by another noticeboard, go sharp left. Soon there’s a boardwalk on the right giving access to a viewing area (no through route).

The way then bends left eventually returning you to the tarmac track.

Here turn sharp right onto the track.

7 Take this sandy, easily followed track that leads more or less straight across the common often with open heathy areas on both sides. After about a kilometre this pleasant way reaches the Sands Lane car park accessed through a gate.

Well, that's GOOD! A York care home is celebrating after being awarded an overall rating of GOOD by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) on their first-ever inspection.

Handley House, which opened in 2019 has hit the spot in all five areas of care: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Staff at the home on Green Lane in Clifton were highly praised, as relatives told the CQC that Handley House 'is a caring environment where residents are real people for carers, not a job'.

The inspectors were impressed with the care team's commitment to ensuring their resident's safety throughout the coronavirus pandemic, noting their dedication to testing, infection control, PPE and training whilst also mentioning how they have worked together to support one another over the last few months. PIRATES Micklegate has gained a new mini pop-up arts and crafts market. The collaboration between Space Invaders, Nelson Bakery and York Candle Company has given birth to a new project: Pop Up Pirates.

The project will see artisan makers and bakers utilise empty spaces around York, turning the buildings into vibrant pop-up markets. And until a redevelopment early next year, the new market at 111 Micklegate will be open daily from 10am-5pm (10am-4pm on Sundays) with the cafe opening earlier on weekdays.

So far there have been candles, art, garden crafts, vintage fabrics and illustrations on offer, alongside tasty treats from the café.

Pop Up Pirates events manager, Matthew Chalk, said: "When we were offered this location, we saw the potential to build a space not just for ourselves, but also for so many other local artists, crafters and traders to safely showcase their work to the public. The

location on Micklegate is perfect for this. It's accessible to the public and a safe outdoor environment. Thanks to Space Invaders and Social Vision, we were able to launch this brand new and vibrant artistic community. Even though we have only just started, the response from both artists and the public has been amazing. As such, we will look to continue to grow this project and community even after the site is redeveloped. Our focus is on quality handmade products only, and ensuring a great mix of products every day."

The market is affordable for local traders, too: "It's £10 per weekday and £20 per weekend day. We want to keep things as risk-free as possible for our artists given how tough this year has been for everyone, and this venture is all about supporting the local arts/crafts community."

Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Transport, Cllr Andy D’Agorne, said:

If you drive around York, there’s a high chance that you’ve spent time on the northern part of the York Outer Ring Road waiting in traffic.

But it looks like we won’t have to wait much longer. Following approval from the Department of Transport, City of York Council is in the final business case stage of the £25 million improvement scheme, and they need your opinions.

The council is asking residents, businesses and visitors for their views on the proposed upgrade from A19 Shipton Road to the A1036 Little Hopgrove.

The five roundabouts that will benefit from the scheme are Clifton Moor, Wiggington Road, Haxby Road, Strensall Road and Monks Cross. The existing single carriageway will be widened to dual carriageway roads in both directions. There will also be an extensive landscape programme to keep existing trees and hedges as much

If you’ve transferred your Final Salary (or Defined Benefit Pension), you might have made a big mistake. If we ever advise clients to transfer their final salary pensions, we have a rigorous process which ensures the advice is and – equally important - remains suitable. This usually involves ‘Cash Flow Forecasting’. This type of forecasting maps out how much money you can expect to receive over a period of time. It takes into account predicted future growth and current/future withdrawals so you know how long your money will last you. This is a must-have. So if you’re receiving investment advice, which doesn’t include Cashflow Forecasting speak up!

Our reviews also include ‘Lifestyle Planning’. This style of advice is relatively fresh in the UK. It sounds pretty airy fairy. But it’s just making sure you’re including your personal life goals and dreams in your financial plan.

So what should you do? Check your position. Make sure if you’re paying for a service, you’re getting a complete and thorough one. If not, you need to take action. So far, I have avoided the mention of Covid-19 because it seems that it’s all we hear about at the moment and it has had very little to do with bathrooms - up until now!

With Christmas fast approaching people would usually be thinking of having a new bathroom installed before their guests arrive over the festive period, and here at Karemel Bespoke Bathrooms Ltd, we would be bracing ourselves for the last-minute rush. This year, it won’t be happening for two reasons.

The first, and most obvious reason, is that if the rule of 6 continues, visitors won’t be coming into our homes, so why the rush? The second is that the global pandemic has had such an impact worldwide that actually getting products to install is proving more and more difficult. We’ve so far had to live through a plaster shortage, a timber shortage and now some manufacturers are struggling with sanitaryware. In my lifetime, I have never known anything

like it.

I’m not telling you this to put you off installing your new dream bathroom - far from it. I’m just asking that if you do want a new bathroom this year, don’t leave it until the last minute to make the decision. Spaces are filling up fast, and we are still in uncertain times. Betting With Beans In last month’s column on our increasingly confusing weather, I suggested that one of the few changes to show some consistency is a trend to milder winters. I ventured that this provides an opportunity for fruit and vegetable growers to push the boundaries, to try growing crops beyond those previously considered hardy enough to withstand the rigours of a ‘normal’ Yorkshire winter.

One such crop is broad beans. A few gardeners in the York area regularly try these outside through the winter, often with some success. Others, such as me, have had disappointing results and given up. I last tried sowing broad beans in autumn about 15 years ago.

This ended in failure. By February many of the plants had succumbed with the rest - sad and bedraggled.

The eventual crop was poor and only arrived a week or so earlier than that from beans started in the spring.

Over the last few years on trips around local allotments, I’ve seen quite a few plots with fine crops of overwintered broad beans. It has led me to have a rethink. Although I’m not usually a gambling gardener, the odds now seem good enough to take a punt on overwintering.

If you’re not familiar with the idea of ‘overwintering’ broad beans, it’s the practice of starting broad beans in the autumn and having them grow slowly through the winter months. The idea is to give the plants a head start so that they crop sooner the following summer.

There are two main ways of doing this. One option is to sow the seeds outside in the ground. Mid-October to early November is the usual time.

The other option is to sow a little later in pots under cover, for example in a greenhouse. The seedlings can go out when the weather begins to warm in late winter.

The disadvantage of the first option is that germination can be poor, and the plants are exposed to the elements all winter. The latter method is more reliable at getting plants started, but seedlings can ‘draw up’ in a greenhouse during the darker months, becoming elongated. When planted out, the spindly plants are easily blown

flat. Having been mollycoddled inside, they’re also more vulnerable to frost if there’s a cold snap.

Whichever option you choose, it’s important to get the right variety of broad bean. Most types intended for spring sowing lack the toughness to survive outdoors through the winter, so using one that’s been bred for winter hardiness is essential. Aquadulce Claudia is the standard choice.

It’s also essential to guard against rodents. These may steal newly sown beans or uproot young plants to get at what’s left of the seed once germinated.

Try too, to protect the plants if it turns very cold. Fleece or similar material thrown over seedlings can make a big difference. And if raising seedlings undercover don’t neglect to ‘harden off’ (gradually expose to outside temperatures) before planting outside.

These measures will maximise the chances of success, but it’s ultimately down to the weather.

Q. I’m looking for some trees with a nice autumn colour to brighten my garden in the future please?

Having a day off at the weekend has given me a chance to go round a few gardens so last weekend we went round Thorpe Perrow Arboretum to look at autumn colour trees at their best.

Acer Grisium “Chinese Paperbark Maple” famous for its peeling papery orange-brown bark, This maple has a characteristic three-parted leaf that turns orange and red in the autumn.

The branches are ascending at first, spreading later. It is excellent for growing in a border or a large lawn.

Amelanchier Lamarcii is a magnificent tree and has two main seasons of interest. Spring when the bushy crown is a cloud of white blossom and autumn when it is ablaze with red and orange foliage, one of the most reliable trees for autumn colour.

Cercidiphyllum Japonicum. This is a lovely tree of graceful spreading habit with slender branches, its neatly rounded paired leaves are bronze when they first unfurl, changing through

Blue-Green in summer to yellow, pink or purple in autumn. Dislikes dry soils.

Cotinus “Royal Purple” This can be a small bushy round-headed tree or a large multi-stemmed shrub, the striking leaves are wine-purple in summer colouring to a brilliant orange-red later.

Large plumes of purplish-pink flowers are produced in summer.

Liquidamber “Lane Roberts” one of the darkest and most reliable of all autumn colouring trees, this handsome specimen of conical, later spreading habit has shining green maple-like leaves that turn through a range of colours from pale orange to deep red-purple.

Parrotia “Persica” The Persian ironwood will eventually become a broad spreading tree with piebald bark. It produces small red flower clusters in late winter or early spring, and its glossy green leaves turn yellow,

orange and red-purple in autumn. It was a beautiful day out in the autumn sunshine with lovely walks between the avenues of trees and shrubs.

Q. I believe Fusarium Wilt has killed my passionflower and at least two Acers which I have removed. I can’t seem to find any fungicide treatment for this and currently have the soil covered in black plastic, do you have any advice on how I might treat it, or how long to leave the plastic on before I can replant?

Fusarium Wilt affects many plant types, but tomatoes and potatoes are most susceptible. Also known as stem rot, it moves into plants through their roots, and from there it clogs the plant’s passageways blocking the flow of water, nutrients and vital fluids until wilting and eventual death of the plant. Other Fusarium Pathogens attack

different plants such as brassicas palms and many shrubs and trees, unlike other wilt diseases fusarium wilt often shows up only on one side of a plant branch or leaf. Bottom leaves show symptoms first. As the disease spreads upwards, the plant wilts, turns brown and drops its leaves, stems near the base show clogged vascular pathways and dark brown streaks if you cut them. Once fusarium wilt infects a plant, there is no effective treatment. Remove and dispose of affected plants immediately.

DON’T compost this garden waste.

Whenever possible, remove and replace fusarium-infected garden soil.

If fusarium wilt hits your garden don’t plant the same related plant types in that area for at least four years depending on your climate It may be possible to control fusarium wilt by “solarizing” your soil. This involves covering it with plastic so that it reaches very high temperatures over a long period (at least a month). Keep your garden tools and boots clean and free from soil contaminated tools. Footwear can spread fusarium pathogens to fresh soil. Hope this helps Hillary.

Do you have a particular smell that takes you back in time? Perfumedirect.com’s latest survey has revealed the most iconic scents of the past five decades.

They asked 2000 UK adults to vote for the top fragrances of each decade.

Strap in, we’re going on a trip down memory lane.

The 70s

There were some clear classics from the 70s that stood out to our senses. YSL’s Opium, Anais Anais, Chanel No.19, YSL Rive Gauche and Charlie Blue.

The 80s

As the fashions of the 80s got bolder, so did the scents – with Calvin Klein’s Obsession, Poison by Dior, Paris (YSL), Coco, Beautiful Estee Lauder, Ysatis (Givenchy) and Cool Water all voted as 80s classics.

The 90s

The 90s introduced exciting new technology, some great music, movies, and television, as well as some fresh and fruity new fragrances. The clear winner was CK One by Calvin Klein.

The noughties

Celebrity fragrances became a thing, but it’s not these that we remember most. Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, Mugler’s Alien (2005), J’Adore (Christian Dior), Allure (Chanel), Light Blue (Dolce & Gabbana), Flowerbomb (Viktor & Rolf), Black Orchid (Tom Ford) all topped the list.

The 2010s

And the 2010s saw the launch of some super fragrances including Aventus Creed, Love by Chloe, Bleu de Chanel, Daisy (Marc Jacobs), and Chanel Chance.

“Sense of smell is linked to the part of the brain that is responsible for emotion and memory, so perhaps more so than music and fashion, perfumes evoke strong feelings of nostalgia.

“When looking back over the past 50 years, perfume is up there alongside fashion, music and film when it comes to defining the mood of the nation. In fact, some fragrances became cult products because they reflected what was going on in the world at the time.

“Floral based fragrances are said to be popular in times of uncertainty or naivety, whilst those from the Chypre family (warm, mossy scents with citrus top notes) have often emerged following dramatic events or tragedies such as war or recession. In contrast, Oriental fragrances are often seen as feel-good scents which are popular during more light-hearted ‘party’ eras.

So what does Perfume Direct predict as the iconic scents of the 2020s?

Mood-boosting scents are big sellers for 2020. Scents containing fragrances that can have a positive effect on your brain, such as Ylang-ylang, jasmine, citrus, vanilla and rosemary are all hugely popular right now.

The unisex appeal and highly recognisable smell of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is already making it something of a cult icon in the fragrance market, and a scent likely to appear high on the 2020s list.

NIPT Test We also offer this non-invasive blood test. This test screens for specific chromosomal conditions in pregnancy such as Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome and Patau’s syndrome.
