I start every month the same: I engage in an hour-long stare off with a white word document.

I might ask the YLL team what they’re having for lunch.

Someone was brave enough to bring a fish pie in last week.

But before long, it’s back to the ghastly white page.

Before long, things start falling into place. I catch wind of a post on Facebook about something brilliant that’s happened in York. This month, that was a story about Your Cafe, Luke’s Larder, Tang Hall Big Local and Tang Hall Community Centre. Turn to page 16 to find out more about what they did.

Then an advert comes in for an exciting event, and the May Events Diary grows.

Pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place, and I can see what the next magazine will look like.

May feels like the beginning of a brilliant puzzle. Life is slotting back into place, piece by piece. I think that the finished picture is going to be different to what we once knew, but marvellous all the same.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

GREEN HAMMERTON AND WHIXLEY

This gentle stroll visits the under-appreciated villages of Green Hammerton, Whixley and the surrounding countryside. The route is mainly on field paths and tracks with just over a mile on a country lane that carries very little traffic. Most of the walk is waymarked and easy to follow. Where the route is less clear, points are underlined in the directions.

Directions

1 With the Bay Horse pub behind you, go right down Boroughbridge Rd passing the village green to the right and Village Club to the left. Approaching the main road take the path to the right of the trees and cross the road to go along the left verge for 20 metres to a gate. Go through and walk along the left edge of the field to a footpath sign pointing diagonally right across the field. Keep well to the left of an isolated tree to find a gate in the hedge ahead to the left of a telegraph pole. Go through and continue on the same line across the corner of the next field to a further gate. Once through, keep in the same direction over another field to a gate visible in the hedge. Maintain the same line across a further field aiming just to the left of a white building.

2 Go through the gate to the road. Now continue in the same direction (ignoring the two roads to the right and passing the Anchor Inn and village store) to go along High Street. Ignore a road on the left (Stone Gate) but soon after, opposite the village hall, go left up Church Street. Just after passing a left turn (Clockhill Field Lane) turn right up a signed footpath. Pass the church to the right to arrive at a gate.

3 Do not turn half right across the field as signed but go into the left field corner and walk alongside

the hedge for 40 metres to find a gate. Go through and turn right on the other side along the right edge of the field. At the field end continue, now with the hedge and young trees to the left, passing through another gate to arrive at the left corner of a field.

Take the obvious path in the same direction leading across a large field to a gate. Through this go slightly right across the next field to a gate in the hedge.

Beyond, continue in the same direction towards a small pylon and go over the stile. Now veer half right towards a barn crossing a further stile into a small paddock. Exit this at a three way footpath sign over another stile. Go right, keeping just behind the barns on the right, to find a stile giving access to a surfaced track leading to the main road.

4 Cross the main road into the field opposite and go left along its edge parallel to the road. At a footpath sign by the crossing hedge turn right on its far side away from the road. Go left at the next field corner but in 20 metres turn right as signed on an earth track downhill with a hedge to the left. At a path crossroads keep ahead, now between hedges.

Where the track forks go left, still with hedges on both sides, and in about 350 metres arrive at a road by a T junction.

5 Turn right at the junction (signed Thorpe Underwood 1¼). Continue on this quiet country lane which eventually narrows between high

Getting there The recommended starting point is the Bay Tree pub in Green Hammerton where there’s plenty of on-street parking. It’s also possible to park and start from Whixley.

Green Hammerton is nine miles from York via the A59.

Bus 22 runs approximately every two hours from Piccadilly and the railway station to both Green Hammerton and Whixley (no Sunday service). In Green Hammerton alight at the Post Office stop just before the Bay Horse pub.

Refreshments There are pubs in Green Hammerton (Bay Horse) and Whixley (Anchor).

What to see Since the bypass, Green Hammerton is a pleasant village with less traffic. Its most attractive feature lies off the main road, the long village green flanked by several period houses. Whixley has a similar array of period buildings, many old farmhouses, especially on High Street. The Church of the Ascension, tucked away at the end of the village, dates from the fourteenth century. Good views over the Vale of York to the North York Moors and the Wolds can be had on the route approaching and leaving Whixley. Later the walk skirts the grounds of Kirby Hall.

The original hall was mostly demolished in 1920 but parkland and a lodge remain. Another feature of the walk is the extensive campus of the private school, Queen Ethelburga’s College. Its main building, the present Thorpe Underwood Hall, was designed by York architect Walter Brierley. Thorpe Underwood also has Brönte connections, both Anne and Bramwell having resided in the hamlet for a few years.

The pandemic certainly hasn’t slowed down York’s food waste heroes. A collaboration between Tang Hall Big Local, Your Cafe, Luke’s Larder and Tang Hall Community Centre saw 2738 food parcels given away and 8500 meals cooked since September 2020.

Pre-pandemic, YourCafe and Luke’s Larder would organise weekly waste food shops to save edible food from going to landfill.

Your Cafe also put on weekly meals made from the waste food they received from local food outlets. Guests would get a three-course meal and full table service from volunteer waiters. On busy weeks they could often see up to 130 people.

When the pandemic arrived, changes had to be made but it didn’t stop the team from working towards their goals of reducing food waste.

“Everyone who wanted a food parcel

could book one and they could also order a takeaway meal. People could then come down and collect them, but if you were shielding or not able to get out, they would be delivered by volunteers,” said Lisa Maunder-Wood, director of Your Cafe.

An incredible 1350 volunteer hours were clocked up between September 2020 up to the end of March 2021 between the four organisations.

Amy Johnson, Joint Treasurer at Your Cafe, said that it’s been a huge team effort on all parts: “Without our volunteers, it just wouldn’t be possible: they are absolutely amazing. There are about 30 volunteers across Your Cafe and Luke’s Larder. They go out, collect everything, help sort the food, distribute packages…they’ve been amazing.”

Now that restrictions are starting to lift, Your Cafe and Luke’s Larder are looking forward to future events. The Tanghall/

Your Cafe food hub runs at Tanghall Community Centre on Wednesdays from 12-1pm and Luke’s Larder at St Luke’s Church, Burton Stone Lane on Wednesdays from 12.30-1.30pm.

There are also some exciting plans in the pipeline, including an outdoor cafe which has been made possible by funding from Heworth Ward.

For those who have never shopped with Your Cafe before, Lisa and Amy really want to stress that it is literally pay as you feel and there are no expectations of payment: “We really do have a pay

This month, our resident sports writer and York City F.C. fan, Simon Pattinson, is looking at recruitment for the next season.

Hello and welcome to another column, and as I write this, another month without seeing York City kick a ball after the season was ended early.

Having some proper football back in our lives and watching the Premier League on TV is all well and good.

But being back in the stands watching football (without VAR ruining the fun) and celebrating that stoppage-time winner in the 90th minute is far better without having to wonder if it will count or not!

Since the last time we have spoken, the club has placed staff back on furlough begun to work through recruitment for next season.

There have been six players who have signed on: Akil Wright, Scott Barrow, Peter Jameson, Olly Dyson and captain Sean Newton with defender Matty Brown already having a year left of his two-year deal.

Hopefully, during these months of having no football manager, Steve Watson and his assistant Micky Cummins will be taking a closer look at recruitment and the players needed to get out of this division. If both players are to stay at the club next season, a

crucial part of this will be building a side around Jack Redshaw and Harry Bunn . We all saw what both of these players were capable of in the small number of games we managed to play this season, and if we can add a proper centre forward who will be able to get goals, then we will do well. The lack of a proper goal scorer in attack had certainly hindered our position in the table (taking away the amount of postponed games that is). It is certainly what we lacked to look like genuine contenders for promotion. We were creating chances, but ultimately it was goals that lacked, and it will be interesting to see where we can improve upon in these next few months.

The weeks are also getting closer to fans being able to set foot inside the new community stadium. Fingers crossed there will be some exciting preseason friendlies lined up. Some big names to bring in the new stadium and hopefully a new era for the club will be very welcome, I’m sure by many fans.

Talking of being welcome at the new community stadium, I cannot finish this column without saying a big thank you to the departing Commercial Manager,

Chris Pegg, for all the work he has done during his time at the club during the last couple of years.

He, alongside media officer Dan Simmonite, have really worked hard on engaging and galvanising the fan base during what have been tough times for City fans. I wish him all the best in his new ventures.

In rugby, the Knights have certainly had a good start to their new season.

Thinking about going electric for your next car? The government’s electric vehicle grant scheme was recently recharged for another year.

The plug-in car grants are slightly less than before, offering up to £2,500 towards the cost of a new electric vehicle priced under £35,000.

Transport Minister, Rachel Maclean, said: “The increasing choice of new vehicles, growing demand from customers and rapidly rising number of chargepoints mean that, while the level of funding remains as high as ever, given soaring demand, we are refocusing our vehicle grants on the more affordable zero emission vehicles – where most consumers will be looking and where taxpayers’ money will make more of a difference.”

The plug-in grant was introduced 10 years ago to stimulate the early

market for zero emission vehicles.

Since then over 285,000 vehicle purchases have been supported.

The grant scheme covers a range of vehicles including cars, motorcycles, mopeds, vans, taxis and trucks.

To take advantage of the scheme, consumers don’t have to do much; dealerships get to include the grant value in the vehicle’s price.

Cars that qualify for the grant include the BMW i3, Volkswagen

e-Golf, Peugeot e-2008, Mini Electric, Honda e, Renault ZOE, Skoda ENYAQ iV 60 Nav, DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and many more.

It’s also possible to get £350 off the cost of installing a charger at home through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme.

If you do come in looking for a new electrical appliance, one of the major differences you might notice is that the energy ratings look to have dropped dramatically since last year, but why?

Well, there’s nothing to worry about.

We haven’t suddenly been sent a load of substandard products due to Brexit - it’s simply a re-grading of the energy labelling system.

In certain categories, like refrigeration, manufacturers had made such huge strides in energy efficiency that literally all the fridges you could buy were in the bands from A energy to A+++ which did not make them easy to compare so now they have been re-classified as A to G. This not only makes it more obvious which products have the better efficiency but also leaves room at the top end for manufacturers to further improve.

For now, the following categories have been re-graded: dishwashers, washing machines, washer-dryers, fridges and freezers and wine storage but others are likely to follow as their products start to crowd the top of the scale.

We all knew that Covid and lockdown would change the way we looked at the world, but who knew it would change the way people looked at their bathrooms?

Before lockdown 2020, many of the bathrooms we installed at Karemel Bespoke Bathrooms were grey, be it light, dark or mid but since coming out of lockdown, it would seem people want to inject a bit of colour and glamour into their lives. I, for one, am absolutely loving it.

Manufacturers have got daring and now produce blue, turquoise and even pink furniture, tiles have started to brighten up with patterns and colour and the range of bathroom friendly wallpapers (yes wallpapers!) that have come out are amazing.

My advice has always been when you are renovating your bathroom, think of why you are doing it. If you are refurbishing to sell, stick to neutral colours or even white.

This allows your prospective buyer to look at a blank space. Not everybody likes colour so by keeping it plain, you won’t offend anyone, and it will not negatively impact your sale. If you are renovating your forever home, go for what makes you happy, bring in colours that affect your mood – red is energising, yellow induces

happiness, green is calming, blue LOCAL is peaceful, and EXPERT MEL pink is compassionate.

Slugs & Snails Slugs and snails are the bane of most gardeners’ lives. On the vegetable plot, spring is usually the time when these mucous molluscs are especially damaging. Newly planted crops are especially vulnerable. A muggy wet night is when the worst devastation occurs. This is when slugs and snails like to party. The morning after susceptible plants can be a torn, tattered and slimy mess.

What can be done to combat slugs and snails? For many, the answer is to scatter slug pellets. The sale of pellets based on metaldehyde, a substance that can be harmful to pets and wildlife, has

been banned since the end of March this year (any you still have must be used or disposed of by the end of March 2022). Pellets based on ferric phosphate remain available but these too have environmental drawbacks.

I’ve never used metaldehyde pellets and very rarely use the ferric types.

As with other pests I try to create an unfavourable habitat, a plot that’s slug and snail ‘unfriendly’.

One way to do this is to have the veg plot away from places where slugs and snails can hide during the day.

Typical concealment spots include untidy piles of wood, bricks or other junk, the bottom of hedges, overgrown weedy areas, the base of sheds or outbuildings and underneath

flagged paths. Compost heaps and, especially, wooden edged beds also provide nooks where slugs can secrete themselves.

It’s also important to remember that slugs have enemies besides pellets.

Lots of animals prey on molluscs.

Maintaining a garden with a mix of wildlife-friendly plants will attract wildlife that’ll help keep slug and snail numbers down. Frogs, toads, newts and ground beetles are amongst the most effective predators on smaller slugs.

Some birds, including blackbirds, will eat larger ones. Hedgehogs are said to be partial to slugs. And, as is well known, thrushes are adept at extracting snails from their shells, often using a stone as an ‘anvil’.

Another means of heading off problems is to avoid practices that invite slug and snail activity.

Don’t, for example, water the plot just before dusk. Where practical, plant out crops rather than sow directly in the soil. The bigger and more robust a plant, the more it can withstand mollusc munching. Also, where feasible, situate crops that are especially susceptible to slugs and snails away from

Tony Chalcraft areas where they are more likely to congregate. Tender young plants set out near an unkempt weedy area on the fringe of the plot are far more likely to attract molluscs than those planted in a weed-free area far from the edge.

These methods may help reduce slug and snail depredation but are unlikely to prevent it entirely. There are, of course, lots of other measures that can be taken. Gardening websites and books tout all kinds of solutions many of which lack scientific validation. These include so-called traps of scooped out fruit, such as a half orange, or buried jars containing beer. Then there are various ‘barrier’ methods. Placing gritty materials, for example, bark or eggshells, around plants are said to work by some. Special copper tape is another, more expensive, option.

For slugs, but not snails, there’s also the option of biological control using the nematode ‘Nemaslug’, something I’ve never tried. Finally, for the really desperate, there’s always the torchlight nocturnal hunt. I have to admit, just occasionally, to having been driven to this extreme.

The NCA is adding a new degree course to its teaching portfolio with the launch of the *BSc in Personalised Nutrition starting in September 2021.

The three-year full-time undergraduate course joins NCA's impressive nutrition course portfolio, with the College already offering; MSc/PGDip in Nutrition, Science and Practice, and Online MSc in Advanced Nutrition (Research and Practice).

The course, which is validated by the University College of Osteopathy blends in-college teaching (weekdays), online teaching, e-learning, plus clinical skills learning and experience in the nutrition teaching clinic at the NCA in York.

Course Director and Vice Principal, Karen Fallis, said: “With the positive outcomes and benefits of nutritional and lifestyle medicine becoming increasingly popular and more widely recognised

within mainstream medicine and the general population, this is an exciting time to be studying nutrition. We have been running nutrition courses for over ten years at the NCA with tremendous success, so we are extremely pleased to be adding this exciting new degree course to our nutrition curriculum.

Being based in York, we are the only establishment in the north of the country to now offer a BSc degree in Nutrition.

Meaning that many people who may have not previously had the option to travel further afield to study in a taught environment, now can.”

On completion of the course, graduates will become fully qualified nutrition practitioners and qualify for full BANT membership and CHNC registration.

SIZZLERS Red cabbage, tahini and maple slaw

Ingredients • 1 red onion, sliced • ½ red cabbage, shredded • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds • 2 tablespoons tahini • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup • 1 lemon, juiced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 carrots, peeled into ribbons • 2 courgettes, peeled into ribbons • 20g toasted hazelnuts • Salt & Pepper

Method 1. Combine the red cabbage, red onion, sesame seeds, carrots and courgettes.

Each month we sample some of the finest products that Yorkshire has to offer.

2. In a separate bowl whisk the tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and maple syrup together. Add seasoning.

3. Pour over the cabbage mix and check seasoning.

4. Place in a bowl and garnish with toasted hazelnuts.

Ginger Chicken Satay Skewers

Ingredients •2 tbsp. Crunchy Peanut Butter •2 pieces Opies Stem Ginger in Syrup, chopped and reserved syrup •1 tsp. minced garlic in oil •½ tsp. minced chilli in oil •1 tbsp. soy sauce •1 lime •1 tbsp. olive oil •400g chicken breast, cut into chunks •Handful of fresh coriander leaves Method

1. In a large bowl mix together peanut butter, Opies Stem Ginger in Syrup, garlic, chilli, soy sauce, the juice of ½ lime and olive oil.

2. Add the chicken pieces and coat each piece well. Place in the fridge for ½ hour to marinade.

3. Thread pieces of chicken evenly onto either wooden or metal skewers.

4. Grill or barbecue on a medium heat, turning frequently to ensure they don’t burn until the meat is thoroughly cooked.

5. Drizzle over some reserved syrup and serve with wedges of lime and scattered coriander leaves.

Hints and Tips: Don’t forget to soak the wooden skewers to stop them charring.
