TIME TRAVEL

That’s better... Spring has definitely sprung in the YLL office, despite it coming quite late this year. We’re happy to report that the winter coats have be cast off, windows have been opened for the first time since September, and a few of us have even taken to working outside. Unfortunately the persistent rain caused an issue with this, and we lost several expensive laptops. Still, we’re just happy to feel warm again, and have used that enthusiasm to create a fantastic issue of Your Local Link, just for you. Hopefully you’ll take a leaf out of our book (not the actual ‘book’ in your hands, mind. Unless there is a tear-out coupon) and start to enjoy the sprung spring-y splendidness of York in May.

For starters, our Treasure Hunt takes in the quickly changing area of Hungate, while the Time Travel article, about a lost church, will encourage you out to wander about King’s Square, reading headstones and tripping over jugglers. And don’t even get us started on our Events section. Okay, we will. It’s mega awesome choc-a-block super-filled with lot’s of things to see and do, many of which take place... OUTSIDE! Eek! The summer is coming! Oh, and if you wanted even more events, with bigger descriptions and more details, get yourself to our website at www. yourlocallink.co.uk It’s lovely. Anyway, enjoy the mag and have a great May.

Fair game... If your spring clean has turned into a spring fix, we know of just the place for all your DIY requirements. Caboodle might already be known as a tool, home, and garden wonderland from their base on Foxwood Lane, but now, thanks to their second location opening in Beaconsfield Street, Acomb, they're stepping things up an extra gear. To celebrate the opening of the second store, stocked with painting, garden, security, and key products, Caboodle are offering one lucky reader the chance to win £25 worth of decorating supplies – handy for that spring-time freshen up. Call 849020. For a chance of winning, answer this easy peasy question:

In which area of the city is Caboodle's new store located? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Caboodle competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 31st May so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

With the sun now back to spending a healthy amount of time in the sky each day, we're bet you're keen to get outside and into the countryside. Taking place at Scampston Hall, near Malton on 19th-20th May, the fair will highlight the best of country living, from falconry displays and clay shooting, to a horse show and gun dog demonstrations. YORK LIFE

and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

Telling the truth is, as we never tire of saying to our children, very important. However bad your misdemeanour, it can only be made worse by lying. When I was a child, my father used to tell us the salutary tale of George Washington and the Cherry Tree, evidently in the hope that it would turn us into honest adults.

It did work. Up to a point. I am honest in my dealings with HMRC, for starters. But other than that, I am sorry to say that my life is full of Harmless Little Lies. These aren’t the ones we tell other people. Oh no: we wouldn’t dream of lying to other people. These HLLs are the ones we tell ourselves. Here, in no particular order, are my own Top Seven HLLs.

Other people’s food has no calories. This particularly applies in restaurants. “Oh no,” you say, waving aside the pudding menu with a firm hand. “I really mustn’t / couldn’t possibly eat another thing. A double espresso will be fine, thank you. Though I might need two spoons for it.” You then proceed to tuck in to your companion’s portion of Death By Chocolate with merry abandon. This also, obviously, applies to other people’s chips at all times. And Pringles. It possibly applies to anything that you pick out of the fridge while hanging around the kitchen on a wet Wednesday afternoon. It is not an official meal time, ergo hummus and cheese have zero calories. A bottle of wine contains only one unit of alcohol. Because ‘one’ bottle, obviously, is the same as ‘one’ unit. Which means you could in theory drink

two bottles of wine a week and still be within the government’s recommended maximum weekly unit-age. And gin and vodka, of course, have no units and no calories either, as they are clear liquids (i.e. water by another name). Money spent in the sales is money saved. So the more skirts you buy in the Jigsaw sale, the more the savings add up. Which means that if you buy enough skirts, you will actually end up with more money than you had in the first place. Buying anything at Wombells Auction House falls into this category, too. Proper furniture for less than you would spend on identikit white things at Ikea. This is why I possess more than one corner cupboard. It’s all part of a cunning plan to save money. Speaking of money: if you don’t look at your statement, you will always be in credit. Goes without saying. Buying a gym membership makes you fit. Of course it does. There’s the effort involved in actually going to the gym, and the arm-exercise involved in signing an expensive contract. Then there’s the window at the Gym Formerly

Chest Freezer Was £179 Now £149

Pressing the snooze button on your alarm won’t delay you that much. Only ten minutes more. And another ten minutes. And another. And then another. Of course you can get up and dressed and mobilise your children and make their packed lunches and find

YORK LIFE

Known As Energise, which enables you to watch other people using exercise machines. This makes you feel very fit indeed. Then there’s the extra arm exercise involved in lifting a cup of coffee while you watch, and the effort involved in turning the pages of your newspaper. Then you can go home again and repeat the process a month later. Instant fitness guaranteed. Buying a bicycle has a similar effect. Goodness only knows how astonishingly fit the people are who buy Lycra cycling outfits and never wear them.

their missing shoes under the sofa and get everyone out of the house in seven minutes flat. I’m only going to buy one light bulb in Barnitts. Half an hour later, you emerge with approximately 100 light bulbs, some hamster food, three water carafes and matching glasses, a soap dish, an avocado saver, a tube of Gorilla Glue, some purple dye to try to “improve” your sofa cushions, a bottle of Jeyes fluid because it reminds you of your childhood, and a second washing-up bowl, because it’s made in Britain and you want to support home-grown manufacturers as well as home-grown shops.

There is something very appealing about bookshops. The calm, the quiet, the huge wealth of great literature at your fingertips... all these may be why so many of us dream of working in one. Well, here’s your chance to do just that, while also helping out a worthwhile cause. Oxfam Booskshop on Low Petergate are looking for new volunteers to join the team, and the opportunities available are as numerous as their stock of books. As you might have guessed, they’re keen to take on volunteer staff in the shop itself: working the cash desk, helping browsers, and stocking shelves. But they also require extra hands to work behind the scenes, as collections drivers, events organisers, and community engagement officers. 20TH APR 20TH MAY

L to R: Audrey Hepburn, David Beckham, Sam Smith, Tina Fey

If you need to make a couple of minor sacrifices and compromises, then make them with an open heart. You can achieve much of what you seek to achieve – but not all at once! There is plenty of emotional support and advice from spouses and partners, but this is a time when some kind of professional advice might carry more impact. Finances are not a critical problem at the moment, but they may become so unless you practice a bit of belt tightening and common sense. This is a concern

exacerbated by someone else’s unwillingness to curb their spending. Recent gains can be lost if you, or someone close to you, is going to ignore the balance sheets. Birthday celebrations may bring a couple of unexpected surprises, and there is a good travel aspects between the 3rd and the 6th. The 9th/10th brings good news where jobs and related ambitions are concerned. The 20th onwards sees you taking a sideways step, and letting someone else carry the flag. Some fresh leadership and some new ideas are useful at this time.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE

touch, and rather than playing it safe, be prepared to take a few calculated risks. A direct and honest approach in affairs of the heart gains you brownie points!

They say that youth is wasted on the young, but at the moment, it is younger members of the sign who seem to be making most of the progress and enjoying most of the fun. If you don’t fall into this category, take a leaf out of someone else’s book, and rather than acting your age, act the age you’d like to be! Much to be gained and nothing lost.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

A wonderful opportunity comes your way, but if you say yes to it, you’re real-

ly going to upset someone close to you! This is a no win situation, and all I can say is fortune favours the brave! Intense emotion in relationships can be beautiful, but also quite exhausting. However, if you’re single and you’re looking for love, this could be your lucky month!

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

It’s spring, so this is a natural time for the birth of everything from children to new jobs and better and brighter ideas for the future. Self doubt is probably your biggest single enemy, so kick it into

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22NF SEPT

You will feel under pressure as increasingly other people look to you to provide the impetus of leadership. Don’t wobble on this one – just gird your loins and get on with it, because the bottom line suggests that you are the best leadership candidate right now. You need to be strong for other people

close to you, and at this time, that’s all that really matters.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT

Librans are not by nature secretive souls, but nevertheless there are occasions this month when you’ll be playing your cards very close to your chest. There are plans in the wind, but you won’t want to share them with anybody until you’re sure of a positive outcome. Anything to do with new knowledge and education should be highly significant.

AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV-21ST

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

You might not want to be “in charge” but this is a role thrust upon you and other people will not make decisions ‘till you have decided what you are going to do first. Tackle any obstacles head on to gain victory and triumph, and as the month unfolds you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of thanks and appreciation, especially from the 22nd onwards.

DEC

Quite a rosy month in affairs of the heart, and giant strides forwards will be made in any new or recently budding relationships. Travel aspects tie in with family reunions, but some families will experience a diaspora as younger folk fledge the nest. Long term finances under review, as you will be practical and pragmatic when it comes to doing your sums.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN Capricorns can sometimes be rather isolated, and some effort needs to be made at this time to improve and expand your social circle. New faces bring fresh energy and help generate new ideas. It might be a good time to consider joining a club or taking on some kind of sport or hobby that brings you into contact with other like-minded people.

May should start calmly enough, but there is some turbulence in the wind between the 8th and the 22nd which might bring changes to work routines and some domestic tension. Everything finds is back on an even keel from the 23rd but you’ll feel a bit battered and bruised. You’ll also feel a bit happier where finances are concerned. Anything owed gets paid.

YORK LIFE

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

Probably a good money month with something beneficial falling in to place around the 9th. Travel aspects (even if we’re only talking about holidays) will be relevant, and there is a “fun” mood taking effect from the 18th or 19th onwards. New emotional confidence coincides with a boost to your financial confidence, the one going hand in glove with the other.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

Medical issues may cause some concern during the first few days of the month, but by the 4th or 5th you should be fighting fit, more determined than ever to prove that you’re some kind of super hero. This mood should be tempered with caution and common sense, and although the outlook is good, you should not commit yourself to any kind of extra work load.

The area around Hungate is changing faster than any other part of the city. So, to savour this (crane-filled) time, we take a wander around Hungate and St Saviourgate to see what we can see.

TREASURE HUNT

1.

We start on the corner of Stonebow and Garden Place. • What is the name of the car park to which a sign directs you near here? • Start walking along Garden Place. What can you not do here at any time? • What is the biggest bedroom-capacity of the apartments being built?

4.

Turn right back onto Stonebow. • Before you trek on, stop to see if you can spot which company is ‘pure’. • How many rugs are upstairs? • If you were headed for the Minster, which way should you go ‘via’?

5.

Crossing the road, turn left onto St Saviour’s Place. • The door to the big posh building, Peasholme House, offers what welcome? • This street makes exceptions for what?

22

2.

Turn left onto Carmelite Street, named for the Carmelite Friary that used to stand around here in medieval times. • Name the student accommodation block.

3.

Turn left onto Hungate, the street after which the area is named (it used to be a lot longer – more on that later). • What contribution is available?

YORK LIFE

6.

Turn left onto St Saviourgate. • What do the occupants of No. 35 not like? • Who is the Minister? • When was the hospital founded?

7.

Keep heading along the street. Once you pass DIG look to the left, to the short street that seems to run down into the newly revamped Stonebow House. This is (or rather, was) the entrance to Hungate which ran from here all the way to the River Foss. Anyway, nearly there! • Name the women’s project based around here. • How many taxis can wait here?

Done! We bet that if you take this same hunt in one year’s time, most of the area will look a lot different. It’s a date.

ANSWERS 1: Shambles, loading, three bedrooms. 2: St John Central. 3: Stamp Duty. 4: Pryers, 1000s, Aldwark (on cycle info board). 5: Please enter, “taxis and access”. 6: Junk mail. Rev. Nicky Jenkins, 1700. 7: Kyra, 12.

YORK LIFE GIG OF THE MONTH

A recent trip to the Yorkshire Museum got me thinking about how I’m treating the world I live in. Spoiler alert: If the world and I were mates, I would be a bad mate.

HONOURS + SABELLA + FEENS WHERE: The Spread Eagle WHEN: 4th May INFO: A free entry show with York’s latest indie-rock band, Honours. Having just released their latest single Freedom, which was well received, they’re hitting the live music scene in a big way.

We’ve all been fascinated and horrified by BBC’s Blue Planet II, while learning more about the amazing creatures that live in our oceans was awe-inspiring, the footage of turtles in plastic bags was a horrible reality to face. I’m sure I’m not the only one when I say it’s been something that’s played on my mind a lot. The man who brought us Blue Panet, Sir David Attenborough, recently opened Yorkshire’s Jurassic World at the Yorkshire Museum. The major new exhibition is a show stopper: virtual

dinosaurs, massive sea dragons, a virtual reality headset where you can feed a sauropod, yeah it’s pretty cool. I expected to come out of there with a new sense of wonder at the world and, of course, bragging rights to my colleagues and friends about getting to be in the same god damn room as the man, the legend, the national treasure himself. And I did, at least at first anyway. But as with most things, I eventually got into my own head: Put us in the place of dinosaurs, what are we leaving behind for people to find? All I could imagine was gross pictures of plastic piling up on shorelines. Going to the supermarket has since become a real trauma. Imagine one of those horror movie reels where the victim’s eye sight goes in and out of focus. FOCUS: Individually wrapped

mini chunks of cheese in a plastic net, blurry lights, FOCUS: Multipacks of drinks in plastic bottles in plastic packaging to keep it all together. I blindly stare down the aisle as I put a multipack into my trolley, cringe and push it to the back of my mind. The veg aisle provides some sanctuary - I go straight to the loose potatoes and happily pile them in. Next up is bananas - and a test sent from the dinosaur gods above: None of the loose bananas are anywhere near ripe, we’re talking like two days minimum until the right shade of yellow. FFS. I grab an ‘organic’ pack in plastic - they’re ready now, I scowl at how accustomed to convenience I’ve become. I’m a guilty person, I spend a lot of time feeling bad about stuff I can’t really change. The amount of plastic I use though, is definitely something I can change.

Oh god no! Please don’t damage this poor lady’s confidence by telling her that she didn’t look as good as her pictures for goodness sake! Everyone uses their best pics for online dating, I think it was naive of you to expect her to look exactly like the pictures. Have you actually had any online dates before? Do you have a teeny tiny feeling you might be being a little bit shallow? If she had turned up and it was apparent she was a completely different person to who she said she was, it would be a different story, it doesn’t sound like this was the case. If you don’t want to see her then that’s your prerogative, don’t explain

u CATFISHED! Dear Daphne, Im using online dating and occasionally go on the odd casual date. I met up with a girl I’d been talking to for ages - I couldn’t wait. I was pretty shocked when I got there as she looked nothing like her profile picture. I reckon she must have edited them beyond belief. Not only was she clearly heavier than her pictures made her out to be, but her face looked a completely different shape. The date was a little bit awkward but I got over the shock without saying anything and we had a laugh in the end. I want to let her down gently but really don’t think she’ll have much luck if she carries on dating this way. Do I say anything?

26

any further than the fact you don’t want another date. There’s no need for it and it’s not helping anyone. I’m glad you asked.

u SMOKING GUN My husband always said he would quit smoking when we decided to have kids, but the baby is due in June and he still hasn’t kicked the habit. I can’t tell if I’m furious because he’s let me down or furious because of my hormones. Either way I don’t want smoke to be around the baby and the smell makes me feel queasy. I’m so disappointed in him and desperately want him to stop in time. I’ve told him I hate it but it hasn’t made a difference. What can I say to persuade him? First of all congratulations on expecting your first child! The realisation often kicks in quicker for the woman as she is carrying the baby. But it sounds like your husband has now had plenty of time to get to grips with this. I can’t get into the politics of parents who smoke but I can deal with the fact he told you he would do something that’s important to you, and he still hasn’t. Make sure you remind him why he said he would do it - for health or financial reasons, maybe for hygiene and smell? Suggest alternatives that you would be more comfortable with, maybe he could go on to an E-cigarette or patches. Have a conversation with him about how its made you feel that he hasn’t done what he promised he would and ask if he’s taking any steps towards doing it. Hopefully you can encourage him in the right direction. Good luck!

YORK LIFE

u GREEDY COLLEAGUES Work mates keep on stealing my food from the fridge at work. Whenever I get a decent hoard of snacks they go missing and I cant figure out who the culprit is or how to make them stop. I don’t want to come across as petty but its my food that I’ve payed for and I’m sick of having to go out and buy more. Where do I start? Don’t you just love it when you can attack a problem with passive aggressiveness. Me too! First of all I would label your snacks or put them in a plastic container to discourage; petty but, in most cases, effective. Keep an eye on bins for packaging, if someone is careless enough to eat other people’s food without asking, they’re careless enough to leave evidence lying around. Should you find out who the culprit is, kill them with kindness and buy them some snacks, make a song and dance of gifting them, and loudly joke that it’s so they can STOP BLOODY EATING ALL OF YOURS *manic smile*.

u SUSPICIOUS SPENDS My girlfriend bought some very sexy lingerie online last week. I don’t think she realised but it came out of my Paypal account so I logged in to see what had been bought. I wasn’t sure if it was something I had forgotten about. Put it this way, the underwear doesn’t look very practical or comfortable. I know it’s none of my business what she buys online - but she then went on a weekend away with the girls and didn’t keep in touch with me at all. I can’t help but feel a bit suspicious about the whole situation. Should I ask her about it? The signs aren’t great but there could still be a perfectly innocent explanation for this situation. You don’t want to upset your girlfriend by assuming the worst, but its ok to want to get to the bottom of this for your own piece of mind. I suggest you broach the fact that there’s been a payment come out of your account and ask if she’s been doing some online shopping. Let her explain to you what she’s been doing in her own words. Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE LOST CHURCH OF KING’S SQUARE At some point in your life, you've probably found yourself stopping on King's Square to gawk at a street performer. While you watch fire eaters, or giggle at the crude innuendo from that guy who stands on his “big balls”, only a century previously our ancestors were gathered on the same spot to listen to holy sermons about sin. That is because King's Square was previously home to a church; Christ Church. The square today is an open space perfect for public performances and chucking pastry crumbs at pigeons. However, in the past the place was dominated by the church, making the likes of Colliergate and the street leading to The Shambles narrow alleyways. The raised platform, which today still exists and serves as a very convenient stage, was part of the church's graveyard, with some headstones now incorporated into the ground.

SIGNIFICANT BEGINNINGS Christ Church, or Holy Trinity as it was also known, was first mentioned in 1268 but it is highly likely that the original building was much older than that... perhaps even 1000 years older. Well, kinda. You see, King's Square got its name from actual kings. The square marks the spot where the Roman Porta Sinistra (left-hand gateway) stood, which would have been a pretty major stone

building. This building survived the Roman withdrawal from Britain, and was used by subsequent rulers, namely the Saxon, and later Viking, kings of York. The theory is that the Roman gateway, repurposed partly as a palace, would have had a chapel, and it was this place of worship that, rebuilt a few times as the Roman wall and structures were demolished, eventually became Christ Church. And so it remained, as an important place of worship for the locals, many of which would have possibly lived and worked in The Shambles, for centuries. It wasn't until 1768 that the city planners started to realise that the church was impeding access in the area, so part of the church's vestibule and vestry were removed to increase the width of Colliergate. However, that meant that the entrance to the church from that side opened directly onto the street, causing a few fatalities. William Hargrove, in his 1818 guide to the city, wrote:

“The confined entrance to St. Andrewgate, on account of the projection of this church, has often been the cause of misfortunes, which the feeling mind cannot but contemplate with horror. In short, the turn is so sudden from the narrowness of this part of the street, that several lives, at different times, have been sacrificed to the existing evil.”

DIMINISHING

Clearly someone took note, as by 1829 the church had been reduced yet again, allowing Colliergate to widen once more, and giving the medieval church a strange triangular layout. Christ Church was also becoming less popular at this point, as the many reductions had caused the floor to become uneven and the space unsuitable for worship. Sotheran's Guide of 1852 was no fan of the ancient building, saying that “if it was altogether removed there would be no

And so, enter the Victorians; a strange bunch of people who it seems, at times, had far more money than sense. In a curious decision, driven possibly more by nostalgia than common sense and thought for the future, they demolished the medieval church and immediately rebuilt it on the same footprint. It was still a cramped, oddly shaped church, but it was at least refreshed and reopened by 1861. That was, however, a total waste of time and money, because...

THE NEIGHBOURS WON In 1886, just 25 years later, the parish of Christ Church was united with the larger parish of St Sampsons, rendering the church defunct. Without a regular congregation utilising it, and with even

greater demands on the neighbouring roads, especially from these newfangled horseless carriages, the church's fate was sealed. By the turn of the 20th century the only regular visitors were the flock of sheep who were housed there, and in 1937 the building was finally fully demolished.

loss of architectural beauty, and a great increase to public convenience. Damn.

Fortunately the cleared space was left for public use, creating the pleasant Kings Square that we know today. A large inscribed stone tells passersby about about the existence of the church, but far more interesting are the

surviving headstones that can still be made-out on the raised paved platform. The next time you stop to watch a juggler, or drool through the cafe window of York's Chocolate Story, give 'em a read and consider how different this part of the city once looked.

SPORTREPORT

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. Its been difficult to work out whether the association of York and the Shambles is just attributed to the cobbled streets or whether it extends the off-field chaos at York City Football Club. Since my last column so much has happened after the biggest vote since Brexit occurred, when the supporters trust decided against handing their shares to Chairman Jason McGill, who then quit as chairman and put the club up for sale. Needless to say, no multi-billionaire has stepped forward to take on a club

in tier 6 of English football, but I live in hope that common sense will prevail, and some sort of middle ground will be met so that York City don’t open the new Community Stadium playing Haxby Town. All this has been offset against the latest accounts that read last year’s financial records reported a near million-pound loss despite parachute payments and another Wembley visit. Some fans have been scratching their heads at that one, but they only

Come & visit our showroom

have to pick up a matchday programme to see a squad of 25 players and Martin Gray’s coaching team being a bigger entourage than Kim Kardashian’s, to see where some of that money has gone.

CROSSROADS At time of reading York City’s season could have gone one of three ways: The club could have failed to get into the end of season play-offs which really would be a disaster, but in writing this after defeats to Harrogate and Nuneaton the quest to come in the Top 7 places isn’t guaranteed. They could, however, have battled into the play-offs but fallen short at some point during the three matches needed to secure promotion. Or maybe, just maybe, Martin Gray has steered the team to an unlikely promotion which has rewarded the long-suffering fans with some joy, or light relief, to not having to spend another season in regionalised football. If that’s the case, forget the entourage comment; the more the merrier on that bench. Okay, so there is probably more chance Jamie Carragher winning role model of the year than the Minster men ending the campaign winning promotion, but if they can get a ticket to the lottery (and Big Jon Parkin is back and firing) you never know in football. After being at

SPORT

Old Trafford for that glorious 3-0 victory in 1995, you never rule things out, though someone pointed out every other week 2500 people coming to the same place hoping for a miracle could be misinterpreted. Perhaps it goes some way to explaining why the PA guy says after each game “until the next time; keep the faith”.

LOOKING BACK All the uncertainty off the field has got supporters comparing things to the early 00s, when Jon Batchelor was in charge. I personally don’t feel it's quite the same, as this time there isn’t the same comedic element to it. Batchelor renamed the team York City Soccer Club to make us more known in the US, and having just come back from the states I didn’t see anyone with a city shirt on. We also signed a Brazilian striker Rogerio, or Rodge to his adoring fans (I think there were a couple of them), in an effort to sell Brazil shirts in the club shop. Only at York City would you see the world’s only Brazilian professional footballer unable to trap a ball. His debut showed some flare honed on the streets of Rio with a mazy dribble, beating a couple of players but then hit a shot that went out for a throw in. Supporters think James Gray is bad but at least he has a goal to his name.

LOOKING DOWN, DOWN UNDER At least we have all had chance to laugh at Australian cricket recently with their two (only) good players, Steve Smith and the loveable David Warner, caught up in a ball tampering scandal and suspended. Fair play to the young South African supporter who asked Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon to sign his sandpaper. He failed to see the funny side, but a Brisbane bookstore did when they started stocking Steve Smith’s autobiography in the ‘True Crime’ section.

GOING GREEN SOONER

According to the government’s climate change watchdog, we need to make the switch to electric cars faster than originally planned. It has been suggested that, by 2030, three fifths of all new cars should be electric and 70,000 hectares of new woodland need to be planted. Basically, the plan set out by the Conservative government last October isn’t enough, and we all need to do more to battle climate change. Still, it’s nice to live in a country where the government actually acknowledges the existence of climate change. Poor America...

Get sick in the car when you’re a passenger? Chances are you are susceptible to motion sickness; that disoriented, sicky feeling you get when your body knows it’s moving, but your eyes disagree, either because you’re reading a book or watching a movie. Researchers at the University of Michigan think they’ve solved the issue with a sazzy pair of specs. The glasses contain tiny LED lights on the inside rim, which flicker to give the sensation of motion. Therefore, even if you’re nose-deep in a novel, your eyes will still be reporting motion to your brain. Sounds good, but lets hope they throw a bit of style into the frames, yeah? We still wanna look cool.

BEER RIPPLES. Latte art is a thing,

THE AUDI OF THE FUTURE

Flying cars... how do they work, then? Imagining one can be tricky, as the wheels will get in the way when flying, while the stuff it needs to fly will get in the way when driving. Audi (along with Airbus) think they’ve cracked it with their joint ‘autonomous transporter’ concept. This is essentially a two-seater pod with a detachable drive section, and clip-on drone section. You can motor around the streets, but when it is time to fly, the huge drone section ‘picks you up’, attaching to the roof and lifting the pod free of the wheels. Sounds fun, but what if you want to land and there are no wheels? The future is complicated.

COME WHAT MAY Ahh... I do love the dear old month of May. Spring has fully sprung, the days are nice and long, and I finally get to take off my winter coat. We can now start to look forward to a blazing hot summer and the fun that'll bring.

Floored Extracting by choice the problems

We hear from Mel Collier of JDL‌

But are your household devices up to the task? In the summer our fridges and freezers have to work a lot harder to keep the prosecco and ice cream cold. Are you confident your trusty old fridge won't conk out by 1st July?

HOT STUFF Fortunately, here at Herbert Todd & Son we have the answers to all those icky, sickly, bothersome hot questions. For a start, we stock a huge range of fridges, from retro-looking Smegs, to ultra high tech mix and match Liebherr units. Built-in, free-standing, budget and top-ofthe-line... we have them all. We can also get that conservatory, living room, or bedroom as chilly as your fridge with a Creda air conditioning unit. Getting air-con in your home is easier than you think, and with our installation service, we'll do all the hard, sweaty work. Ask, and we'll give you all the details. So for a warm... make that, cooling welcome, come and see us at Monks Cross, or visit www.htodd.co.uk

36

So you've sorted the colour of the walls, the curtains, the soft furnishings... what about the floor? Flooring is often an overlooked part of interior design as the sheer wealth of options can be somewhat daunting. This is where Osbaldwick-based Ebor Carpets come in, offering not only a extensive range of carpets, laminate, and vinyl, but also more than 40 years of experience thanks to their expert staff. Their showroom on Farndale Avenue, which is celebrating two happy years of business, is stocked to the rafters with choice, and Ebor Carpets' team of fitters can take all the stress out of the job. To find out more, call 414393, or just pop in!

Recently, lots of people have told me they are having a problem with bathroom mould. They are unhappy that their silicone is turning black or there are black marks appearing in paintwork. The easiest way to resolve this issue is to look at extraction. If you have no form of forced ventilation in your bathroom, mildew and mould can often occur as a result of constant steam and humidity. By installing an extractor fan the moist air will be forced out of your bathroom leaving you with dry air which prevents development of mildew.

INSTALL THE SOLUTION Here at JDL, whenever we do a bathroom installation, we would always recommend a low voltage silent fan. Not only will this get rid of steam from a bath or shower effectively, it will also aid items such as towels and toilet rolls to dry faster. Extractor fans can be installed in existing bathrooms relatively easily (after an electrical inspection) and fans that have been in a while can be replaced for the newer more effective model. If you feel you would benefit from an extraction fan in your bathroom and would like a quote, please do not hesitate to contact us and we’ll arrange a site visit. Visit www.jdl.co.uk.

Hanging baskets Some planning is often necessary; firstly you need to choose the right compost for the job. Choose a good quality, multi-purpose compost with a feed content of four to six weeks. Then add water retaining gel and a slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote; this will keep your baskets going strong without the initial need for liquid feed. When the basket is flowering heavily, it is a good idea to use a liquid feed as well such as Miracle Gro or even Tomorite, once a week. Now for the fun part, choosing your plants. There is a huge array of summer basket plants to choose from, as well as many ways to plant up a basket. Whether you prefer a basket full of just one type of plant, such as Surfinia, or a mixed basket with one main, brightly coloured structural plant such as a Geranium or Fuchsia in the middle with trailing plants around the outside, you can create a stunning masterpiece.

FILL 'ER UP! As a rule of thumb it is recommended to use three to five 9-10cm pot sized plants in a 12-14" basket and five to seven plants in a 16-18" basket. You can go for a fuller look to begin with by adding more plants, however the basket will need watering and feeding more often to keep the plants happy and healthy. You should check your baskets for water on a regular basis every couple of days, however during hot, sunny periods a fully planted basket may require daily watering and a weekly

liquid feed. Flowering plants such as Ivy Leaf Geraniums, Surfinias and Fuchsias should be regularly dead-headed by removing the old and dead flowers, which will encourage more flowers to be produced. Many other small flowered plants are selfcleaning so therefore will not need dead-heading.

STOCKED UP If you are looking for some different types of basket plant, Dean’s Garden Centre are stocking several new Petunias such as ‘Baby Doll’ with its

May is the best time of the year to start planting summer hanging baskets, with large selections of trailing, spreading and upright plants to choose from. vivid pink flowers, speckled with white or Sweetunia ‘Miss Marvellous’ with its deep purple-black flowers with white streaks and edges. You could go one step further and go totally tropical by mixing indoor houseplants such as Hibiscus as a central plant, with bright yellow or orange-red bidens, dark leaved Tradescantia, silver leaved Lotus or Dichondra to tumble over the sides. This would be sure to give your basket the wow factor! However, these should not be put outside until all risk of frost has passed. Hanging baskets can also be great for edible plants if you are short of space. Why not try a tumbling tomato variety such as ‘Tumbling Tom Red’ or an old heritage tomato such as ‘Tumbling Tiger’? You could also use Chilli ‘Basket of Fire’ or even a trailing Strawberry. Herbs such as Indian Mint, Thyme and French Lavender also do well in baskets. Best of luck with yours!

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

Could you recommend some plants for summer hanging baskets and patio planters, please? Also, do you have any tips for looking after them? These days, the choice of plants is fantastic, as most plants I am about to mention come in a wide variety of colours and shades. When people ask for hot colours in a basket, we use reds, orange, and yellow in our planting. For softer tones, we prefer pinks, blues, and white, all in light shades. Let’s start at the bottom of the hanging basket: place a circle of moss, about the size of a saucer, at the bottom of the basket, then add some compost so you have a level surface. The plants for this layer can include trailing verbena, calibrachoa ‘Million Bells’, bidens, lobelia, helichrysum silver, scaevola, and surfina. By placing moss up the sides of the basket, about three more inches, then adding compost to that level, you can next place diasica, sanvitalia, nemesia ‘nuvo’, bedding bergonias, verbena, and phlox. Then move up another layer with more moss and compost, again

by about three inches. The top-side layer of your basket could include short trailing plants, brachyscome, centradenia, Felicia, helichrysum gold, marigold ‘French’ bergonia, and impatiens. Then add moss to the very top edge of the basket and fill with compost to the top. This is my favourite layer as it is the same for all out baskets, as well as for our planters. Start with a fuchsia in the centre, then place three geraniums in a triangle around the fuchsia. The next triangle working outwards could include salvia, African marigolds, dianthus and cineraria. Around the edge of the basket or planter you could use trailing geraniums, trailing fuschia, bacopa, lysimachia, trailing bergonias, trailing verbena, and million bells. If you have any space left, use bedding bergonias as fillers. Use good quality compost and add a slow-release fertilizer. Water every day in hot weather, and then every other day when it’s cooler. The basket or planter should flower until the first frost of winter.

Q.

I have a Viburnum Tinus ‘Eve Price’ and every year something eats holes in the leaves, making it look unsightly. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?

Sounds like this damage is being caused by the Viburnum Beetle. The symptoms are irregular holes that are eaten out of the leaves of native Viburnum, Viburnum Opulus, and Viburnum Lantana. The worst to be effected in Viburnum Tinus as this variety is evergreen. Holes are eaten between the main veins and the remaining tissues turn brown. The eggs of the beetle overwinter in cracks on young stems and hatch in mid-May, producing creamy-yellow larvae with black markings. They feed on leaves in May to June and grow to a length of about 7mm before going to the soil to pupate, which is generally a month after hatching. Adult beetles emerge from the pupal cells in the ground during July and August and also feed on the leaves before laying eggs at the tips of year-old shoots. Each female lays about 200-300 eggs. It’s important to look out for the first signs of damage in May to June and then spray with a contact insecticide to kill the young larvae. Repeat after a week or so, if necessary. You can rejuvenate eaten plants by cutting back hard, as this will bring a fresh flush of new growth. Also feed well with a good fertilizer or Blood, Fish & Bone. Hope this helps!

SPARROW GRASS

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. Fresh asparagus, or sparrow grass as it was known to me as a child, is one of the treats of late April and May. Now produced commercially around York for supermarkets, it’s also available at local farm shop outlets. You might think this widespread availability a perfect excuse for not bothering to grow your own, but if you like it, asparagus is a crop well worth trying. Once established, asparagus is one of the easier vegetables to grow. There are a few basic things to remember about this gourmet crop. First of all it’s a perennial. That means, unlike most other vegetables, there’s not the trouble of beginning from scratch every season. A mature asparagus bed can continue to produce for many years. Secondly, asparagus is a high value vegetable. Although it will cost to plant a bed, the harvests that follow will be free. And, of course, home grown will always be fresher and tastier than bought.

EASY AS PIE Growing asparagus may be easy, but it’s not a complete doddle. One of its quirks is that it won’t thrive on very heavy or wet land. If your ground is damp or sticky it’s still possible to grow it but plant on a mounded bed formed of well-rotted compost or lighter, brought in, soil. It’s also better sited in an open, non-shaded, position. A sunny spot will always produce an earlier crop. Growing asparagus also requires patience. Starting

from seed is possible, but it’s a protracted and fiddly business taking three years before much of a crop can be harvested. A more convenient and quicker option is to buy young plants or ‘crowns’. These are available from various seed companies and are usually planted in spring. With an already developed, spidery, root system, crowns can give a usable crop in the second year after going in the ground.

WEED-FREE It’s essential when setting out a new asparagus bed to ensure the site is free of perennial weeds. Asparagus forms a dense, matted, root system which can’t be hoed or forked to any depth. It’s also important to give the individual crowns plenty of space. Plant very close and the harvested shoots or ‘spears’ will be scrawny. About 40cm between plants is the minimum spacing, with a similar distance between rows if planting more than one. Further advice on planting can be obtained online. As for varieties, I favour the newer male types (yes, asparagus can be male or female) which tend to give thicker spears. Lucullus is a good choice, but if you want extra chunky spears go for the old Victorian variety, Connover’s Colossal. Apart from cutting down the dead tops or ‘fern’ in autumn, and perhaps applying a winter mulch of compost or manure, an established asparagus bed needs little attention except for occasional patrols to check for asparagus beetle. This annoying pest

mainly feeds on the tall top growth asparagus makes in summer after the spears have been harvested. If left unchecked it can cause severe defoliation. This will tend to weaken the plants and may reduce next season’s crop. Fortunately the asparagus beetle is fairly conspicuous. About seven millimetres long, it has a distinctive red thorax and yellow wing cases. It does jump readily though, so if nabbing it is tricky look out for its lazier larvae which are grey/black and about one centimetre in length.

BATTLING CANCER... WITH YOUR HELP

TODDLE THIS WAY..

If you've ever visited Roko Health Club at Clifton Moor, you might have noticed a few young-looking members. Instead of working out, the kids who attend First Steps Day Nursery, within the grounds of the gym, are exercising their creativity in a safe and playful environment. More than just a gym crèche, First Steps offers OFSTED-approved child care, provided by trained and experienced Early Years educators. As well as caring for children from two months old to pre-school age, they also run fun holiday camps for four to 12 year olds, filled with games and activities. n To find out more, visit www. firststepsnursery.net/york-nursery

GI VE A DO G A HO ME You might have noticed that this issue of Your Local Link was delivered to your door with a companion this month. The York Against Cancer newsletter offers news, updates, and info about the brilliant work the charity does right here in York, and further afield, too. You should definitely have flick though. The main headline of this new newsletter is that York Against Cancer is growing. Even more people across Yorkshire are now able access the services they help fund, and the high tech mobile chemotherapy unit, which is used by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, travels out to the likes of Scarborough, Bridlington, Malton and Selby. Paid for by the charity (and you, if you ever donated to the appeal),

50

the mobile treatment centre also relieves pressure on York Hospital, improving the experience for patients there. Double win.

THE CLEVER STUFF Let's not forget that York Against Cancer is also constantly funding ground-breaking research to find cancer cures: they aren't just dealing with the problem and helping to make those who are ill more comfortable, they are actively fighting it! The YAC funded Jack Birch Unit at the University of York carries out pioneering cancer research, and by donating cash, volunteering your time, or by attending YAC events, you're helping to keep it going. n Read about all this, and lots more, in newsletter, free with this edition of Your Local Link!

CHEAPER BY THE (HALF) DOZEN Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

I think it was Steve Martin who starred in the film Cheaper by the Dozen; I'm not sure, as I refuse to watch anything with Steve Martin in it that was made after 1992 and have therefore never seen it. However, going on the title alone, I'm assuming it is about a family who have 12 children and all the crazy antics they get up to. I'm guessing Martin at some point gets food on him, or gets “comically” crushed beneath stampeding feet at breakfast time, and all with a profamily, pro-white America message. As a youngster, when I imagined myself in starring movie roles, it was usually as a time travelling hipster who teaches Napoleon Bonaparte to 'chill out' with rad dance moves, or indeed as an unfeeling cyborg

who teaches bullies what my kung fu moves feel like up in their faces. I never thought I would be a put-upon dad type of character who gets food on him and is crushed beneath stampeding feet at breakfast. But I am.

CHEEKS Recently my wife gave birth to our fourth human child. He's alright. I mean, he doesn't do much, except

gargle and wriggle and poop, but he's pretty lovely. Due to the density of his cheeks, he seems to be made more of my DNA than my wife's, making him easier to love. I could write columns and columns about his furry little ears and delicate little fingers, but I shall not. I'm too stressed. You see, as well as bolstering our child ranks by one, we also recently took on two more mouths to feed, bringing our dependencies number up to six. No, we haven't adopted a couple of refugees, but rather purchased two Guinea Pigs. They are our first ever pets (if you don't count the kids, which my wife says I’m not supposed to do) and arrived less than a fortnight after the baby. They live in a cage in the dining room, eat hay, poop in a corner away from their food bowl, and are terrified of everything. If you already have some experience of Guinea Pigs this will not be news to you, but if you've only had cats and dogs (and elephants, I assume) you have to get used to looking after an animal that seems to accept it will be eaten at some point.

WHAT A PUSSY Growing up I had a cat... kinda. It was the neighbour’s cat, but chose to spend most of its time with me as I, unlike the neighbour, wasn't a crazy cat lady with cats

everywhere. That was also the reason we didn't have any cat food, and so gave the wee chap chargrilled chicken, steak, and Chinese food. It was a huge black cat, the kind previously favoured by witches as familiars, and by pirate captains to keep the men in line. It feared nought; not even passing dogs on leads, nor that one time a fox pushed over the bins in broad daylight. Guinea Pigs are not huge black cats; they are ridiculous balls of fur who are afraid of everything, even the hand placing neatly chopped chunks of veg in their bowl, changing their water bottle, and picking up their droppings. I sort of hate them. The children, however, do not. No, the kids think they're great, and want to hold and pet them all the time, having given them adorable names: Snowflake and Teddy. My suggestions of Corbyn and May didn't get a single laugh from the kids.

SIX OF ONE... So here I am, in a Cheaper by the (Half) Dozen situation, where six hungry little faces are now peering up at me every moment of the day. Although I have yet to be crushed by a stampede of little feet at breakfast (although my two year old did punch me for no reason this morning), I am currently covered in food, both human and Guinea Pig. And tired. So very tired. In my mind's eye I can see the poster of the movie of my life, and there is not a single time machine, nor a shades-wearing, breakdancing Napoleon, anywhere on it. No, it's me, wearing a 'oh God!' expression, smothered in children and dripping with yoghurt, milky baby sick, and hay. The title is FML! Or something better.

MORGAN & WEST: TIMETRAVELLING MAGICIANS (30TH MAY) Time-travelling magicians Morgan & West bring a magical extravaganza to a millennium near you! Not content with their lot as the nineteenth century’s greatest magic duo, this prestidigitatory pair present a conjuring spectacular to the audiences of the modern day.

JOHN COOPER STUDIO THEATRE, 41 MONKGATE Visit www.41monkgate.co.uk

SPEND, SP£ND, SPEND (9TH12TH MAY) The Viv Nicholson story comes to York, thanks to this new production by York Stage Musicals. From rags to riches and back to rags again, the extraordinary musical journey of a brash and naïve, northern lass.
