MARCH THIS WAY If in the last few days you’ve noticed that the weather has become warmer, the days sunnier, and the flowers have starting to bloom, you have us to thank for that. Seriously, if you believe that the coming of spring has anything to do with the planet’s axial tilt, you’re waaay off, professor. The improving conditions, heralding the beginning of the brighter months, is all down to the arrival of the March issue of Your Local Link. True story. The sound of this magazine hitting your doormat would have alerted nearby birds to immediately start laying eggs, while the playful whistle of the person who posted through acted like an alarm call for any hedgehogs still hibernating. You help as well: as you open the finely printed pages and ponder the huge wealth of local info and fun, your collective gasps actually help to clear the sky of wintry clouds,

making it sunnier. No, thank YOU. However, please don’t let the freshly returned sunshine distract you, nor the playful skip of new-born fawn in your garden snatch your attention away. After all, the March issue is still very much a useful and entertaining resource, designed to see you through the March madness happy and in one piece. From the York Literature Festival to York Rocks Against Cancer, the events section is bursting at the seams with things to see and do, while our regular features will see you duly informed about the history of St Nicholas Fields and possibly slightly offended by our usual columnists. We do know how to pick ‘em. Have a great month, enjoy the mag, and we’ll see you in April (when we’ll probably claim responsibility for Easter or something). SARAH

The sun is out, the birds are singing, and the lambs are going mental. We assume. March is always a great month, as spring kicks in, knocking winter for six, and warming all our cherubic little faces. And so this issue is as buoyant and as fresh as an iceberg covered with daffodils squirting Febreeze.

With Mothers Day ahead, Krystal writes about her own mama and how similar they are.

A MEAL FOR 2!

CRYSTAL JEWELLERY

CRYSTAL KISSES

We do like helpful businesses here at YLL. This particular competition comes from such a helpful local company, because as well as offering a 10% discount on their gorgeous crystal jewellery for Mothering Sunday, Starkiss Crystal Jewellery are offering one lucky reader the chance to win three (yep, three!) beautiful pieces. Like, for nowt. The three stunning necklaces display the delicate and artisan style of Starkiss Crystal Jewellery, making them both thoughtful gifts and happily selfish adornments. You could win a rose quartz pendant, a tiger’s eye silver necklace, and a goldstone pendant. n Find out more about their huge range at www.starkisscrystaljewellery.co.uk For a chance of winning, simply answer this easy question: What kind of quartz pendant is up for grabs? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Starkiss Jewellery Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 31st March so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

An historic meal

Picture this: an intimate setting, a roaring fire, exposed original features, and deliciously good food sitting between you and that special person. Well, dream no more, dear friends: that could all come true, and with absolutely no money changing hands. That is because our great mates at The Royal Oak, Goodramgate, are offering one lucky reader the chance to win a two course meal for two, with a glass of Proscesso, completely gratis! Turn to our Food & Drink page to find out more about the historic pub, but needless to say there is something for everyone on their jam-packed menus. n Find out more at www.royaloakyork.co.uk For a chance of winning, simply answer this: On which York street will you find The Royal Oak? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘The Royal Oak Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 31st March so don’t delay. YORK LIFE

As I tip the contents of my handbag onto a freezing cold pavement somewhere near the Racecourse, I realise that there is only one New Year’s Resolution I should have made: to become more organised. Because the only thing that doesn’t seem to be in my handbag (or on the pavement) is my front door key. There are several bunches of keys, all unidentified. There are loose keys, also unidentified. None of them opens the front door. There is a TV remote control, which is even less useful for opening doors. But no front door key. I am officially Locked Out.

FOR PERFECT

Mine, however, is a treasure trove of a very different kind. Two bag clips. A packet of press-studs (for some longforgotten sewing project). A card with the telephone number for York Street Rangers, in case someone decides to sleep on my doorstep again (in fact, I think this falls into the ‘might be useful’ category). A third bag clip. An empty and sad-looking envelope. Two tape measures, one large and one small. A list of measurements taken at

the Wombells sale preview (this may account for the tape measures). A leaflet advertising the Left Luggage place on Petergate (why?) A fourth bag clip. Two broken pencils. A brass screw. A broken earring. A sticker reminding me who I am (left over from Parents’ Evening). A screwdriver, which might have been partnered with the screw, but has the wrong type of head. The silt at the bottom of the bag is formed by eleventy billion receipts for train tickets, Barnitt’s, and M&S. So that’s where all the money has gone. Where’s the useful stuff? Things like an umbrella, or some hand cream? Things that I would actually need? Like house keys, for instance?

Percy’s Lane, Navigation Road, York YO1 9TP 01904 628676 16 York Road, Acomb, York YO24 4LU 01904 798283 48 Tower Street, Harrogate HG1 1HS 01423 701496

However, the absence of the key forces me to accept the fact that my handbag contents are evidently a pretty accurate reflection of my life in general. Not

long ago, there was a piece on the internet where people posted photos of the contents of their handbags for all to comment on. Said people’s bags contained sensible items like sunglasses (in a case), a pair of gloves (as opposed to three mismatched ones), Jo Malone scent, Lockets in a packet, rather than randomly stuck to bus tickets, and, um, house keys.

YORK LIFE

hoping to find some cash or my son’s missing laptop charger - but instead I encounter a scrumpled up bill for £529.67. Now payable with interest, I imagine. A Boulton and Cooper receipt. My Boulton and Cooper bidding card. A sandwich wrapper from Asda in Malton. It wouldn’t take a detective long to work out how I spend my time. A Cycle Heaven receipt for a new brake cable. A wodge of Laura Ashley paperwork, showing clearly that I am obsessed with pineapple finials for curtain poles. A recipe for “Nana’s Magic Soup” (no idea who Nana might be, but I must have picked this up in the Goodramgate Tesco at some point, when I was feeling full of good intentions that didn’t involve merely opening a tin of Heinz Tomato). A hot water bottle stopper, which has me completely mystified. A feather. Six gift cards, all which had money on them but all of which have now expired. And finally something useful: a card for a taxi company in Slough. Then, of course, there is my purse which is, in short, a microcosm of my handbag, containing loyalty cards for cafes I have visited once, innumerable Betty’s receipts, several further screws, an unidentifiable Yale key, and no money at all. Not to mention no house key. There is only one thing for it: to ignore the fact that my bag is evidently representative of the chaos of my mind and to shove everything back in and retrace my steps. This I do, all the way to town - where I find the key on the ground in the last place I visited. And as I was starting to think I might have to sleep in my handbag (I wouldn’t have been that surprised to find a sleeping bag among the rammel in there, really), I really am mightily glad.

CYC TO THE RESCUE!

Come on, how are you doing? Did you abandon your New Year fitness goals on the fourth day, or did you make it a full week? Worry not, dear unfit friends, because City of York Council is here to help, running their popular Walk 2 Jog course once again from 26th February. Over a ten week course you’ll start with gentle walks and build up to jogging a whopping 5K. Jogging is the ideal fitness routine as it is free, great for burning fat, and brilliant at strengthening your heart. So, if you fancy having a crack at becoming that healthier you that you imagined backed in December, sign yourself up by calling 553377, or email yorwellbeing@york.gov.uk

ABOUT TOWN This fair city is blessed in many ways, and not just in the sheer amount of coffee shops that line our ancient streets and thoroughfares. York also boasts three Townswomen’s Guild Groups, designed for woman who want to make new friends, learn something new, and give something back to their communities. The three afternoon Guilds are in Acomb, York Central, and Dringhouses, and they are all eager to offer new members a warm and friendly welcome. They have monthly meetings and enjoy listening to speakers, supporting local good causes, going out to lunches, and enjoying exciting outings. n Fancy it? Find out more by calling 798694 or email js5645@yahoo.co.uk

16

CAN YOU GUIDE? Were you ever in the Girl Guides? If so, you might recall how it was the volunteer leaders and support staff who really made things fun. If you’d love to help make sure the next generation of young women are given the best start with adventures, fun, and socialising, consider offering some of your time to the Strensall & Towthorpe area Girl Guides. They are keen to recruit adult volunteers to help keep the groups alive and running, some of which has been going strong for more than 60 years. There are Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides groups all offering opportunities for girls of different ages, and all in need of staff. Unfortunately the Rainbows group, for girls aged four to seven, had to recently close for the time being, as the team couldn’t find the numbers required to staff and lead it. MARCH

PISCES

19TH FEB 20TH MAR

L to R:Chelsea Clinton, Emily Blunt, John Boyega & Steve Jobs

Quite a bright and productive month where jobs and finances are concerned with some very important choices being considered around the 11th, leading to a subtle change of career direction during the last week. It is only a subtle shift, but it would seem that some of your targets and ambitions are going through a gradual process of change, and instead of aiming for the moon, you’ll start aiming for the stars.

Nowhere is this more appropriate than in affairs of the heart, as you become aware of alternative pathways to those which you saw for yourself only a short while ago. If there is some criticism from certain quarters, I think you should ignore it, and put it down to either petty mindedness or plain old fashioned envy.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

not helped by the interference of an older female, and the behaviour of a younger male could be the cause of some concern. Create some space!

On a professional level you seem to be very much in control and on top of the job. On a personal level, however, you may come in for some teasing and gentle criticism. Don’t take the huff or get up tight. It’s obvious that someone is trying to help you, and you could do worse than to listen to what is being suggested at this moment in time.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY A lightening of mood with the lengthening of the days! Some commitment being made in

18

connection with exercise and health regimes. A gentle boost to your social life, especially around the 15th to the 19th when one particular event will demand some celebration. Day to day finances are fine, but you’ll be concerned about long term nest eggs.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE Lovers and partners could annoy you slightly with their fickleness, but before complaining too much, take one step backwards and remind yourself upon which side your bread is buttered. Domestic harmony is

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL You’ll be spending money to fill a need or fulfil an ambition. You have enough – but only just enough to do this, and there are those who will be concerned that you appear to be putting all your eggs in the same basket. In some ways, you are accepting a risk and are willing to gamble, and although it will pay off in the end, there’ll be tense moments

in between.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG An emotionally up and down month, but the lows are not very low while the highs really are quite high. You will not always know what a lover or partner is thinking, which could well lead to feelings of insecurity, but there is still a vibrancy of excitement in the air. You’ll throw caution to the winds, which is exactly what you need to do. Carpe Deum, and all that!

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT Some dealings with beurocracy and

heart before their head and respond to offers, opportunities and (even improper) suggestions. Anything that can re-focus your thoughts away from some of your established routines will serve you well, and it could be a good time to turn your back on some unpleasant past memories.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN

Single Libran ladies are spoiled for choice when it comes to potential suitors, but be warned… You can have Tom, Dick or Harry, but not Tom AND Dick AND Harry! A nice time for all other Librans who are prepared to prioritise affairs of the heart, apart from older blokes who can enjoy Autumn, but will look like fools if they chase after Spring.

Buying someone a special (and appropriate) present will be problematical. It needn’t be and it shouldn’t be, but it WILL be! Legal aspects may need some attention mid-month, but there is nothing threatening here. Work routines become a bit more intense as the month wears on, and a hint of potential changes at work will not go down well.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV This month the Libran energy crosses into Scorpio, and yet it must be said that in all things romantic and sexual, you are in charge! Nevertheless, you could have some egg on your face if you go off half-cocked, chasing after rainbows, especially when much of what you are looking for is much closer to you than you might think.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV-21ST DEC This could be a delightful month for anyone who is prepared to put their

YORK LIFE

red tape, especially in the early days of the month. This affects males more than females. Financial outlook improving from the 11th onwards, and career girls do especially well. Social events make life interesting around the 23rd, and new friends will turn out to be powerful future allies.

Last month we considered some of the legal issues that people needed to be aware of when buying a business. In this column we’ll be looking at things from the other side of the table and set out what you need to bear in mind when selling a business...

AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB A mixed bag of a month. Other peoples’ problems cause frustration at various times, and as usual, you’ll be the one charged with clearing up the mess. Some domestic upheaval is likely around the third week, especially if there are uninvited guests. A brighter vibe during the last few days, when there could be news of a pregnancy or birth.

Selling a business can be a complicated affair. There’s a lot to think about, including staff, premises, commercial contracts and keeping information confidential. It can also be quite an emotional process, particularly if you started the business yourself and have been running it for many years. There are also the legal and tax perspectives to consider, depending on whether you are selling assets or shares if your business is a limited company. This is why it is so important to get advice from a solicitor at the earliest opportunity to guide you through the process, give you peace of mind and prevent major difficulties later on. Having well-drafted, comprehensive documents is key to a successful transaction. As mentioned last month, the initial points are set out in the Heads of Agreement. The main legal document covering the full obligations of buyer and seller is the Sale & Purchase Agreement. The seller will be required to disclose detailed information about the business, including the staff, and will be required to give certain warranties and indemnities to the buyer. Put simply, these are promises which, if broken, can lead to the seller being sued by the buyer. It is important to remember that confidentiality clauses can apply to a seller just as much as a person attempting to buy a business. After all, the potential buyer may well have disclosed sensitive financial details in order to demonstrate they are able to buy the business. There is also the possibility that you will be asked to sign a ‘lockout’ agreement – which will mean you can’t hold discussions with other interested parties for a certain period – or that you will be required to abide by conditions preventing you from setting up in competition to your old business. Last but by no means least there are important employment laws to consider. Staff will often be protected by the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, known as TUPE. This places significant obligations on the buyer of the business, but the seller will also be required to meet certain formalities. The seller would also be well-advised to ensure that the sale agreement gives them as much protection as possible in order to limit the risk of disputes after the sale has gone through. YORK LIFE GIG OF THE MONTH

It’s nearly mother’s day

…and I’ve realised that I am my mother reincarnate.

HELLO OPERATOR WHERE: The Crescent WHEN: 29th March 2018 INFO: Local (and personal) favourites Hello Operator return for their first homecoming gig of 2018. Expect your usual dose of ‘fuzzfuelled rock’ plus some unheard bangers - they’re deep in the midst of recording their debut album and there’s plenty of tracks to feast your ears on.

It’s late evening when mum and I hear a commotion outside. I run into the kitchen without turning the light on, to see what’s happening. Naturally, mum is already there, in the pitch black - peering out nosily. We rest our chins in our hands on the worktop to maintain a low profile while trading our best theories on what we imagine could be going on down the road. This is one of the many traits I seem to have inherited from my mum. We’re not nosy, just inquisitive. While I’m proud to declare that I have a gritty hard working disposition - I’m also a martyr. If i’m working hard, god forbid anyone else isn't. Mum frequently grumbles about being the only one in the house who empties

the dishwasher, I, too, believe I am the only person in the house to empty the dishwasher - which is interesting because apparently my brother is sick of doing it too. Like supernovas, our moods burn bright but never last very long. We’re terrible sulkers, and often struggle to stretch it out to a full day. This one’s good, because when I’m in the wrong, I can rest assured that though mum’s wrath is fierce, it’s also very short lived. Mum’s brave and strong. I’ve watched her undergo surgery, change careers and take no crap from anyone in the last few years, not even the window cleaner when he tried to over charge her (silly guy - bet he lived to regret that).

She’s immaculate and energetic, there’s rarely a hair out of place or a minute wasted, I’m eagerly waiting to grow into this trait - this will be my peak. I’ve also been blessed with the space to grow, be myself and make my own mistakes, mum doesn’t preach, or second guess my decisions - she lets me get on with it and backs me 100%. I recently started seeing mum as a person as well as a parent. I can confess that I’ve had many ‘is-thisreally-happening’ moments. Picking her up from a house party at 1am, which she adamantly refused to leave, was not something I thought I would ever get to see. Whilst sitting on the sofa doing my best impression of a wall flower, she hip thrusts across the room shouting: “come on Krissy dance with me - I’m putting Abba on” this would have once comfortably fitted into the category of things that will never happen in your life because mum is serious, all-knowing and wise. Her lovely mate comes along and confesses: “I hope my kids look at me the way you look at your mum one day”. Which is endearing but also slightly off the mark, because I was actually just wondering if I could throw a blanket over her and carry her out of the door without anyone noticing. Probably not then. There’s been many nights when I’ve

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH:

ST NICHOLAS FIELDS

You might today know the area tucked away behind Lawrence Street as a nature reserve and environment centre, but the history of St Nicholas Fields is rather... well, colourful. We grab our time travelling wellies and wade in to the historical quagmire of the site.

NOWT THERE Lawrence Street has always been a major road, originally acting as the main Roman thoroughfare from the city to the Humber. However, during Roman times the site that would one day be called St Nick's was neatly divided up into farming land, and stayed that way for centuries – even during the violent time of the Vikings. It wasn't until after the Norman Conquest that we see a major structure, and it was certainly an interesting one.

26

According to records, the land was originally owned by St. Mary's Abbey but was donated by the first Abbot for the building of a hospital, specifically for the treatment of leprosy. This must have happened sometime between 1088 and 1112, with the hospital being named for St Nicholas, and a large area of land around it being set out for agriculture and nursery gardens. Up to forty lepers could be cared for any one time, and the importance of the hospital was bolstered in 1142 with the building of St Nicholas Church on the site.

DODGY DEALINGS However, it wasn't as innocent as it seemed. In 1291 an inquiry was held to investigate the behaviour of the brother and sister monks who ran the place. It seems that due care was not being given to many of the patients, while some of the monks were using the hospital for trading, not bothering to wear their habits (that's a bad habit), and fraternising with the sisters. Crikey.

King Edward I heard of this and dispatched a new Chaplain, Robert le Graunt, to sort the problem out. Trading was banned, the wearing of habits was enforced, brothers and sisters were told not to share dormitories, and the saying of the Lord's Prayer became mandatory. Party pooper.

DECLINE It seems that by the 15th century the hospital was in decline. St Nicholas Church had become not just the hospital's private chapel, but also the local parish church. The hospital itself didn't survive Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, and the final master of the institution bowed down to the chubby King's will in 1535. From then on, the history of the site focusses on the church itself, but not in a good way. During the English Civil War a century later, the Royalists of York used St Nicholas's tall tower as look out point... which clearly didn't work out well. The Church was captured by invading Parliamentarians in 1644 and, during the following Siege of York, used by snipers to shoot at Royalists on Walmgate Bar. During the fighting the church was ruined beyond repair and dismantled after the war. In fact,

YORK LIFE

you can still walk under the church's original entrance archway – it was installed in St Margaret's Church on Walmagte, which now houses the National Centre for Early Music.

WHAT A DUMP With the church gone, the entire site became a bit of a dump... literally. The city corporation realised that the natural clay in the area could be used for brick making, so several brickyards and kilns sprang up. These bricks were mostly used locally to create the 19th century houses along Lawrence Street, and the cramped terraces nearby, as well as the new housing development, Tang Hall, which was built to re-house people from the slums of the city centre like Hungate. The brick works closed in the 1950s, at which point the site entered probably its darkest period, unpleasantly becoming the city dump – both for household refuse and dangerous industrial waste. Awful things like heavy metals and asbestos were dumped there, and in the summer the smell and fly infestation became so bad that local residents petitioned the council to close it. Dumping finally stopped there in 1974.

NEW LIFE In 1981 the council carried out a survey to see what could be built on the site, but due to the unstable ground and dangerous contaminants, the answer was nothing, nada, nope. However, in 1988 the York Natural Environment Trust was formed and began investigating how the area could be transformed into a nature reserve. The council backed the idea, and in 1994 they started to cap the ground with a thick layer of clay to contain all the nasty stuff below ground. Today St Nicholas Fields is leading the charge in making York a sustainable city, with informative talks and events, and city-wide recycling initiatives. Interesting to think how York's greenest site all started because of leprosy. This city, eh?

WILL I EVER GET OVER HIM?

NOSY NEIGHBOURS Dear Daphne, My neighbours take delight in telling tales on my teenage children. Nothing goes unnoticed. When I get home from work it’s almost as if they’ve waited out to tell me what’s been happening, a majority of the time it’s about things I’ve said are ok for the kids to do. The last time the mum was outside she got quiet personal about my eldest. I’m happy with my children - I don’t pass comment on theirs (who have had the police round twice last year.) I’d like them to mind their own business without causing a rift between us. Looks like everyone is keeping score. Parenting is different for us all and everyone likes to think they’re doing a decent job of it. The truth is, most

28 28

of us are, in varying degrees. Perhaps your neighbours are hoping that you are also having the sort of trouble that they are having with their own offspring. Maybe they wish they could trust leaving their kids home alone. Or maybe they’re just bored and don’t have much else to excite them throughout the day. Either way, don’t let it make you think that anything needs changing, and keep doing your own good job. A good avoidance technique comes in the form of pretend phone calls as you walk to your front door. Failing that, a little joke about how the next thing to happen to your kids will be the police coming round ey *wink wink*.

Dear Daphne, My long-term boyfriend split up with me nearly a year ago. He was very kind about it and offered me support while I found my feet, which I took him up on. I thought I would be feeling much more independent and happy by now. The truth is that I miss him like crazy and can’t wait to see him when I know we’ve got the same social events to attend. I fantasise about us getting back together even though he’s made it clear that that’s not what he wants. I feel exhausted after I’ve seen him from the temporary excitement. I just want to shake some sense into myself. How do I get over him? Intense relationships are so hard to get over, and there’s no prescribed amount of time it takes to mend a broken heart. But it does sound like you’re putting yourself on this destructive path on purpose. Did it occur to you that seeing him regularly is doing much more harm than good? The best way to get over someone (says every female magazine

YORK LIFE

like ever, ever, ever) is to contact detox for a short period of time. Some people can remain friends with their ex’s but that comes after the healing (you know, the part you seem to be putting off). I’m talking no texts, no social media, no physical events until you’ve got your head around this. It’s going to get worse before it gets better, you’ve got a hefty acceptance phase to go through. Give your mind some time to heal. You’ll get there.

THREE’S COMPANY Dear Daphne, I’ve been single for some time now and casually playing the field. Having the odd date here and there, nothing too serious. Before I knew it, I’d got myself into a situation. I went on several dates with two different people, I quite liked both of them - but now things are hotting up and I have no idea who I like better out of the two, and they’re completely different people that I like for totally different reasons. I don’t want to carry on with both of them as I know that’s not fair - but I’m tempted to carry on to a point where I am sure of who I would rather be with. Is this fair? Ughhhhh I don’t think so. Not really. It’s unfortunate that there’s not a stand out candidate for the position you hadn’t realised you were looking to fill. Ok first things first, have you tried flipping a coin. Seriously. Works most of the time. Heads for one, Tails for the other. When that coin lands: you’ll know who you really want to see again. And look if you’re still not sure then maybe neither of them are going to be ‘The One.’ In the meantime it’s wise to avoid playing with their feelings by continuing with this Hunger Games-Esque version of dating you’ve got going on right now. I’d finish up on any dates you’ve got coming up and try your best to make a decision - someone always gets hurt in these situations, it could easily end up being all three of you.

SPORT REPORT

with Dan Tait What a difference a month makes; I was just commenting last month how York City seemed to be finally getting their act together with a timely unbeaten run over the New Year, but events off the field are now overshadowing everything at Bootham Crescent. A row over shares between chairman Jason McGill and the York City supporters trust which has been simmering for some time, has now spilled over into the public domain. With the club holding a sizeable budget for the low level of football they now ply their trade at, it feels like it's win or bust as the season gets into the final throws. A budget that includes specific coaches

for every area of the pitch (I don’t recall Dean Kiely having a goalkeeping coach in the mid-'90s) doesn’t seem to stop the goals against column getting larger by the week. A friend of mine said that they were trialling the controversial VAR at Bootham Crescent, but after a couple of replays they concluded that our defence was just rubbish. Back-to-back home fixtures against Boston United (Saturday 10th) and Southport (Saturday 17th) will no doubt offer a huge opportunity to cement their play-off place before Chorley finish March games at Bootham Crescent when they visit on Saturday 31st. ready for the next 100 years”; only to abandon it less than six hours later. I never found out who the 10,000 people were that they consulted. That tweet may have been ill advised but former England hero Paul Gascoigne is churning out the gags on his social media account, the best one being “I went to the doctors and said Doctor I think I am addicted to Twitter. The Doctor said I’m sorry I am not following you”.

Oh, Leeds... York City’s defence may have been a bit of a laughing stock at times this campaign, but nothing can beat the new Leeds United club badge for embarrassment. I don’t know what was worse, the badge itself or the tweet that went with “6 months of research, 10,000 people consulted,

GIGGS' GIG In other football news, Ryan Giggs finally got a managerial job after being 10/1 for about every bottom end premier league to championship club for the past two years, when he was appointed manager of Wales, the country he played for during his career. No doubt Giggs was delighted at being appointed, giving him the chance to do something he didn’t during his playing days… turn up to a Wales friendly game. Of course, that embellishment links back to the old rumours that Alex Ferguson used to influence certain Man United players to not risk injury playing meaningless friendlies. However, we know now he was probably just at his brother’s

house. Its not just Giggs getting an international football manager’s job, as Phil Neville was recently appointed the England Women’s National team boss despite an old social media faux pas hanging over his selection by the FA. The euphoria over his comments seemed to take centre stage over the other queries I had, like his lack of experience in the women’s game and success as a coach. That’s not to mention my lasting memory of his association with England being hauling down a Romanian player in the last minute of a game to concede a penalty that subsequently knocked us out of Euro 2000.

IS YOUR CAR SPYING ON YOU? If you own a new car that was made in the past couple of years, the chances are it has some kind of internet connectivity. Whereas you might enjoy these features to help you locate your car, unlock it with your phone, and even stream internet radio while driving, there is a growing concern about all the information your car could be collecting about you, and about who that data goes to. Pam Dixon of the World Privacy Forum thinks we should all be concerned. “Most people don’t realise how deeply ingrained their habits are,” she told the Washington Post. “Where we park our car on a regular basis can tell someone many things about us.” So hey, it might be worth asking your car maker who they share all you personal data with, just to be sure.

You live in York, therefore, across wider Yorkshire, you’re considered posh. Trust us – many members of the team come from ‘elsewhere’ in Yorkshire and confirmed the county-wide attitude to our fair city. However, it’s not hard to be considered a bit well-to-do when other parts of Yorkshire are really showing themselves up. Statistics revealed that the worst offenders in the UK for speeding live in West Yorkshire. In 2017 a staggering 143,000 speeding tickets were issued; more than double the amount of the second biggest offending county, Surrey, with 63,000. Oh, and West Yorkshire also clocked the highest speed in the UK, with one idiot hitting 160mph on a 70mph stretch of road. Meanwhile in York, we peer down our noses at ‘em and glide effortlessly down Blossom Street in our hybrid cars, munching on caviar. Apparently.

MCLAREN REVEALS OUR NEXT COMPANY CAR Well, here’s hoping, anyway. Unveiled recently is the British hypercar maker’s latest brumbrum, the Senna. As well as reaching speeds in excess of 200mph, the hypercar weighs only 1189kg, and can reach 60mph in just 2.5 seconds! Crikey. For anyone wondering what to get us for our next birthday, erm... this? It’ll only set you back £750,000, which is about three quid each if everyone in York chips in. Go on. LET’S GET PHYSICAL If I said to you I got very excited this week reading an article about Webrooming vs Showrooming, you might think to yourselves that Matt has definitely not been out enough this winter, and the lack of sunlight is clearly affecting his brain. And you would be right. But, the report by e-commerce agency PushON really struck a chord with me as it confirmed everything I believed about what customers want when they shop. The key messages from the report were that it appears we are all happy to buy low cost products without really “getting to know them”: a simple picture and a price is often enough to get the sale BUT if we are looking at a considered purchase like a new washing machine, range cooker or 4K television, the majority of us (82 percent), “believed that in-store purchasing gave them more security when buying expensive items, as they could see what a product looks like before committing to a purchase.”

WHAT'S IN STORE This certainly echoes what we have experienced with our new showroom at Monks Cross: our customers are telling us they are very relieved to be able to come in and actually touch and try the products they are interested in before they buy. That’s a bit of a relief for me as it’s always a gamble setting up these things but gratifying to know we are useful to the local community and providing a service people really want. We have a full range of products on display, from budget to show-stopper, all of which are powered up and ready to try. You can even cook on our hobs and ovens (as long as you share any scrummy food with us!). Don’t forget we are now open seven days a week with a large free car park and easy access for all. Please pop in and get personal with our products very soon!

We hear from Mel Collier of JDL... If you’re in the process of refurbishing your bathroom for the first time in a few years, you’ll notice one major thing – your colour choice has diminished to one… white! Gone are the days when you could get a colourful bathroom suite, but that doesn’t mean your bathroom has to be dull or clinical. Here are my tips when choosing a colour.

ON TREND At the moment, the in-vogue colour for bathrooms is grey. There are some beautiful greys out there, ranging from a soft hint of grey, to deep anthracite, and when used in the right way they can look very boutique hotel and sophisticated. The one thing I would say to people is that although it’s the trend at them moment, will it still be the case in five years time? If you want your bathroom to last, and not look dated, mix the grey up a bit – matt white sets it off perfectly and adds a warmth, or even (as a few of my customers have done) add a bit of sparkle on the walls to reflect the light and heighten the tone.

WARMTH By using brown tones, whether it is by introducing wood furniture or in the colour of the tiles, the whole space will immediately feel warm and welcoming. It gives you a luxurious feel and is the ideal colour palette if you spend a long time in the bathroom relaxing in a warm bubble bath.

VIBRANT If you like vibrancy, don’t be afraid to use a pop of strong colour on your walls. I have seen deep blue, red and even lime green all work really well. This immediately makes the space individual and lively, and gives a youthful appearance to any given room. If you’re scared of committing to colour on a wall, you can get an equally good result by going all white and using colour in your towels and accessories. If you decide to use us here at JDL, I will be able to create a 3D design of your bathroom for you which shows you what your chosen colour scheme looks like before you commit. How we use and react to colour is a very individual thing, and we will do everything we can to turn your dream into reality.

So... you have a load of rubbish to dispose of, and it isn’t something the binman will take. You might already know that simply dumping or fly-tipping your rubbish is totally illegal, but did you also know that you are still responsible for it even if you hand it over to a third party? If you’ve ever called a ‘man-with-a van’, hired a skip, or even asked a friend to get rid of your waste, did you check how they dispose of it, or whether of not they possess a waste carrier license? Right now, City of York Council are running the Crime not to Care initiative, reminding residents that they could face criminal charges, even if their rubbish and waste is dumped by somebody else. n To find out more, and to discover how you can go about disposing of waste legally, visit www.york.gov.uk/crimenottocare

MARCH JOBS

The weather in March can be very changeable, from warm spring sunshine to heavy snow, often dictating what you can and can’t get on with in the garden. The timing on many of the monthly tasks really depends on how mild the weather is.

encourages flowering from a lower level. Finish digging over empty borders; any late frosts will help break down heavy clay soils. This is a good time to apply a general purpose fertilizer to replace the nutrients washed away by winter rains. A good mulch of leaf mould, well rotted farm yard manure or any other organic matter, can be applied on established borders before any annual weeds start to appear. This also helps to seal any moisture.

TEA TIME March is also a good time to prune your Hybrid tea, Floribunda and Climbing roses. Start by removing any stems that have been damaged by the winter weather and also any badly positioned stems: those are ones that are pointing in the wrong direction or are going to rub on other stems, causing wounds and allowing in infection. Reduce any remaining stems back by half, pruning just above an outward facing bud, with the cut sloping away from the bud. Late flowering varieties of Clematis such as ‘The President’ and ‘Jackmanii’ can also be pruned now to prevent them from becoming woody. It also

42

It’s time to start off summer flowering bulbs, such as Dahlia and Gladioli which can be put into pots and kept in a frost free place. This gives them a good head start before planting them into the garden.

good air circulation. If the weather is mild and favourable then the lawn could have its first cut towards the end of March. Make sure that the blades are set high for the first couple of cuts.

Sow seeds of bedding plants, sweet peas and tomatoes in heated glasshouses or propagators. Any seedlings you have sown earlier can be pricked out now, taking care to handle the seeds by the leaves not the stems. If mild, hardy annuals can be started off in pots or sown direct at the end of the month.

HANGING OUT If you have the space to keep plants heated you could opt to buy plug plants from your Garden Centre. This is a good way to start off Geranium, Impatiens and Begonia as the young plants could be put straight into hanging baskets to get them established better. Don’t forget to check any plants over-wintering in there on a regular basis for signs of pest or disease. Open doors and vents on mild days to encourage

General pond maintenance can begin, such as raking dead leaves and other debris out of the water. Thin out and cut back any dead stems from your pond plants, and introduce new ones as well. Clean out and start any filters running. If it’s mild and the fish are active then you can begin feeding them again. Start off with wheatgerm and return to normal food as March progresses.

Q.

I would love to plant a camellia in my garden. Could you please give me some tips on how to grow them? Camellias are long-lived evergreen shrubs, often with large, rose-like flowers in late winter or early spring. Many are hardy and can be grown in any climate, although the flowers are susceptible to damage by hard frosts. They can also be grown as wall shrubs sights exposed to morning sun should be avoided, a the sun’s warmth early in the day may damage buds or flowers that were frosted overnight. When planting a new camellia in your garden, or in a pot, the soil around the roots should be ericaceous as these plants dislike lime in the soil around the base. Most benefit from formative pruning, since young plants often develop leggy shoots. Pruning when established can also encourage a denser growth habit. Prune young plants to shape, and to encourage bushy growth, reducing thin, leggy shoots by one or two buds, or by cutting them out entirely.

Established plants need minimal pruning, although the previous season’s growth can be cut back to just above the old wood. This pruning encourages a bushy, free-flowering habit. Dead head after flowering if the flowers persist on the plant and look unsightly. Pruning should be done in late spring, after all the flowers have fallen or been removed before growth buds break. If the wind blows the flowers off the camellia bush. Pick them up and place them in a bowl of water. They float and stay beautiful looking for a few weeks, bringing some colour to a dull window ledge.

Any advice on growing potatoes? I have just built some large raised beds in my garden and I am wondering which varieties to grow. First you should prepare the soil in your raised beds by digging in some well-rotted manure. This should be done three to four weeks prior to planting. Choosing the potatoes you wish to grow is important, as there are three categories: earlies, mid-season, and main crop. Most seed packaging will give you information about how the potatoes will cook for mash, boiled, roasting, salad, and chipping, etc. Once you have bought your seed potato you

should chit them in trays. Place tubers in a single layer in a tray in a cool, frost-free place, with moderate light – such as an unheated garage. Sprouts form on the potatoes after a few weeks, and once the shoots reach 5cm (2”) the tuber can be chitted from February. Planting should be late March for earlies, or April for mid-season and late varieties. If the weather is not suitable for planting tubers can be left to chit further. You can add a suitable fertilizer to your raised bed, Growmore, or fish blood and bone, which will provide them with everything they need throughout the growing season. To plant potatoes, draw a drill about 10cm (4”) deep with a hoe and place the tubers with sprouts facing upwards in the drill, about 30cm (1’) apart in a row, and 70cm (28”) between rows. Cover them with at least 7cm (3”) of soil. Rake the soil slightly to level and mark the rows. As the potato sprout grows, lift the soil up around it to form a ridge, as this will spot the potatoes from going green. The final height of the ridges should be 30cm (1’). Early potatoes are normally ready for lifting after 15 weeks, mid-season 18 weeks, and main crops about 20 weeks. There is nothing like a fresh potato, the on the same day they are picked. Best of luck!

TONY’S COLUMN

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. There’s an old tradition that for a good crop of early potatoes you should plant them on Good Friday. I’ve always been very sceptical about this. It’s surely fanciful to expect a particular planting date to have any bearing on the success of a crop, especially one that roams around the calendar. The earliest date Good Friday can be is 21st March (although Wikipedia tells me it will be 2160 before it’s that early again) and the latest 23rd April. That’s quite a number of days during which the weather, and planting conditions, can vary markedly. This year Good Friday falls on 30th March. That’s sooner than any year since 2008, but it might just be the right date to risk planting a few early potatoes. By early potatoes, of course, I mean spuds of fast growing varieties that are dug small and scrubbed for boiling or steaming.

CHIT CHAT I plant potatoes, whether earlies or later types, into soil that has previously been well cultivated and manured. The seed potatoes, ideally ‘chitted’ (that is

pre-sprouted with a few sturdy shoots), are placed in holes dug with a trowel so the tops are seven to eight centimetres below soil level. Earlies can go quite close together – I space mine no more than 40 centimetres apart in the row. Some gardeners make a palaver out of potato planting, undertaking extensive excavations and throwing up mountainous ridges. Providing the soil is in reasonable condition I’ve never been able to fathom the need for all this frenetic earth moving. I leave ridging, or ‘earthing up’, until the potatoes have come through and are showing strong growth. It’s then a relatively easy job to mound soil on the young growth, especially if you use a draw hoe and work straddling the row rather than hacking from either side.

ROCKET MAN The early potato varieties I use are Rocket and Foremost. As mentioned last month, Rocket isn’t tops for flavour but, true to its name, is very quick to reach harvestable size. Foremost is tastier but will take a week or two longer to mature. There are plenty of others to choose from: the Victorian variety Arran Pilot remains popular with many gardeners. Whichever early type is chosen, planting at the end of March should give potatoes

of a size worth digging by Midsummer Day. I say should, because early planting outdoors is a bit of a gamble. Ground conditions at the end of March may not be ideal, especially if your soil is heavy or wet. Seed potatoes plunged into saturated ground may struggle to grow, perhaps never really ‘getting going’. The other, bigger, risk is frost in April and early May. A frosty night can quickly blacken and destroy the top growth of potatoes. Although this will reshoot, the damage retards growth so that the tubers take longer to form and the crop is no longer ‘early’. I’m not generally a gambling gardener, but Good Friday this year does seem about the right date to give some earlies a go. Success isn’t guaranteed, especially if you’re not ready to protect the young plants on nippy nights. But with a little care and a bit of good luck, potatoes planted this Easter should give you a harvest before June is out.

H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N

INCOMING Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. By the time you read this I may or may not have had a baby. Well, not me personally, but rather my wife might have given birth to our fourth child. I haven't mentioned this pregnancy in the column all that much, as it just seems to have happened under the radar this time 'round. During previous pregnancies I'm pretty sure I was banging on about my wife's expanding uterus all the time, excitedly anticipating the due date like an eight year old waiting for his birthday. This time, however, we've sorta just let it happen. That is not to say that we aren't excited to meet the wee fella (for 'tis a boy, dear readers), it's just that the previous weeks have been filled, occupied and coloured by distracting things that have taken my attention away from growing tummies. Christmas happened, as I'm sure you're all aware, yet ours was tainted by that awful flu that was doing the rounds. Every member of the family became ill, starting on Christmas Day evening and not really abating until mid-January.

50

THE TRUE FLU By all the gods, it was terrible. I realised it was True Flu when the nightmares came. Yes, feeling completely empty and ill was bad, and having to spend a night in hospital with a very sick four year old was horrible, but for me the weird David Cronenberglike dreams were the worst part. One night I dreamt I threw up my heart, woke up panicked, and began to search for it on my bedroom floor. Another night I dreamt I had coughed so hard my lungs had slipped down into my legs, so I had to breath

really deeply to stay alive. Festive fun indeed. Meanwhile, my wife and I were very grateful to Netflix for finally streaming all ten seasons of Friends. It became our go-to show to watch while sitting in the living room, feeling devastated. Despite the protests of the children (“Dis is not SpongeBob!”) we binged a few seasons while ill, and it really helped. But... isn't Ross awful? I haven't seen Friends in over a decade, but rewatching it all made me realise what a total mansplaining misogynist

he is. It was quite eyeopening.

NORMALITY Yet, at time of writing, things have mostly returned to normal. The four year old is back annoying his siblings and quaffing plate after plate of mashed potatoes, Bodger and Badger-style, yesterday I wore pants for the first time in three weeks, and my wife is no longer concerned about coughing the baby out early and staining the living room rug. The house is tidy, the heap of Christmas Day cardboard has finally been taken by the bin men, and every item of clothing we own has been washed at least twice. We're ready for the baby. I will be assuming my regular, and very important, role which is to inflate the birthing pool when commanded to. This will be our third home birth in a pool, so I think I know what I'm doing, carefully balancing the mixer tap in the kitchen to get the right water temperature. My wife authorised me to buy a new hose this time, which is for the best as our current one has been tied around a post in the back garden for past three months, holding up the rotten fence. I'm assuming she won't want that going anywhere near the sterile environment of the birthing pool.

BABYMOON Once birthed, the baby and mamma will enter their 'babymoon' period, which is basically spending two weeks wrapped up in bed next to each other, in a quiet and darkened room. Y'know, womb-like and that. Meanwhile I'll be entertaining the other three – a simpler task now that the eldest two are hooked on Friends (“Daddy, we were on a break! Hah hah hah!”), and all the youngest wants to do is line up his toy vehicles and roar at me. So, as I said, by the time your eyes grace these fine words, either the above scenario will be playing out for real, or rather one in which I nervously flinch for the electric pump every time my wife touches her bump and frowns. Wish me luck. And her. But mostly me.

ASK THE EXPERT

NON SURGICAL NOSE CORRECTION This month resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, tells us how we could get a nose job without the surgery. For those of us who aren’t happy with our nose, going under the knife can feel overwhelming. Luckily, many problems can be solved with non surgical solutions, which mean minimal downtime.

BEFORE

AFTER

is no significant swelling, bruising or pain. However, sunglasses or heavy eyeglasses must be avoided for two weeks after the procedure.

NON-SURGICAL NOSE CORRECTION WHAT IT CAN FIX?

• Why Radiesse?

Using advanced dermal filler techniques we can:

• Radiesse is made up of calcium hydroxyl appetite crystals, which are similar to the mineral found in bone and teeth, making it an ideal substance to place in the nose

• Radiesse is FDA approved

• Correct the bridge of a nose • Lift the tip of a nose • Correct Bumps • Correct hollow areas and defects • These procedures are non-surgical and has little or no downtime so you can fit it in around a busy schedule. The procedures are done using dermal fillers, usually a hyaluronic acid or Radiesse; the most popular one being Radiesse due to its longer lasting results.

WHAT DOES THE NON-SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE INVOLVE? • The procedure: A topical anaesthetic is applied or a filler with pre-mixed anaesthetic can be used. Dermal filler is

injected in small amounts and in precise locations into your skin so that there is total control over the shape and contours created by the procedure. The doctor will then massage the product to re-shape the nose. During the procedure, you are fully awake. You hold a mirror and you are in complete control of the procedure’s results. • Recovery time There is very little to no down-time involved in the procedure. In fact, most patients return to their normal, daily activities right after their visit. There

• Radiesse is natural and 100% biodegradable • Radiesse does not migrate like some hyaluronic acid based fillers, which is extremely important for injection into the nose.

Treatment time: 20mins Visible results: Correct bumps, hollows and imperfections Results duration: 3-12 months Price: From £220

SUPPLY OF SUSTAINABLE FISH ARRIVES.”

N I C K P E TC H FROM THE MARCIA Service and food-wise, its been business as usual for The Marcia at Bishopthorpe, but they’ve scooped a national award doing just that. “We didn’t know, this is the best thing about it. We had no idea that judges had been coming in over months, mystery shopping.” Directors Gary and Linda Penrose explain. The Marcia has just been crowned the UK’s best foodservice operator serving fish and chips. The pub was judged on everything: responsible sourcing supplies,

supplier relationships, preparation and cooking techniques, menu diversification and customer service. To back it up, this award sits comfortably between previous accolades including CAMRA country pub of the season, Punch Taverns regional pub of the year, and being featured in the Yorkshire Food and Drink Guide. The man behind the food magic, 26 year old Nick Petch, worked his way up from the bottom. “When I started, pot washers did veg prep and basics. I got asked to cover a busy shift one day, and I just thought: I’m enjoying this.” He didn’t look back and went on to chef part time whilst mastering his craft at college.

Nick’s heart lies with savoury dishes: “For me, I prefer anything to do with mains. I was never a baker, always in the service kitchen” and regarding the menu: “it’s traditional pub food, but better. When achievable, food is made here. Our emphasise is on locally sourced produce with fresh ingredients, achieving homemade food.” We’re all wondering about the secret to the best fish and chips? ‘We can’t tell you that.’ Nick will go as far as to disclose that “it’s not just about the batter, which we do make our own, but the fresh ingredients. Fresh fish, hand cut chips and homemade mushy peas. Every morning our supply of sustainable fish arrives, you’ll probably see him.” True to Nick’s word, he arrives a couple of minutes later. The Marcia have got plenty going on this spring. The new seasonal menu launches on 1 March, Nick doesn’t want to give too much away just yet,

so we’ll have to see for ourselves when the time comes. On top of that The Marcia will be running a special event throughout the whole of March to raise funds for families who’ve lost fisherman at sea. It can be an incredibly dangerous job, but not one that’s often thought of by those of us who aren’t in the industry. When the team were at the awards they learnt that two men had been lost at Loch Fyne just a couple of weeks prior. The price of the award winning fish and chips will be going up by £1. The customer’s extra pound will then be doubled by Gary and Linda and all proceeds will be given to the registered charity, The Fisherman’s Mission at the end of March. A worthwhile cause indeed.

To sample The Marcia’s new spring/summer menu or try out their award winning fish and chips, booking is advised. Call 01904 706185 or visit www.themarciayork.co.uk for more information.

We take pride in providing a good old-fashioned, warm welcome
