YORK LIFE
MADNESS? Yay, it’s March – a month typically linked to craziness, silly things, and frantic energy. Why that is, we can’t say. Because although the lambs my be bleeping like crazy, and all the migrated birds have returned to lay eggs and poo on your windscreen, we’re actually looking forward to a nice, calm, and relaxing month now that winter has finally ‘done one’. Oh wait, we can’t. We live in York, where there is never any down time, is there? The city continues to chirp and jigger no matter what the weather is like, and March is certainly no exception. But worry not, because if it is all a bit too much for you, we’ll see you right. As. Ever. Flick to our event listings to check out the best of the best happenings this month (highlights includes the York Literature Festival, yo), so you can
pick and choose how to spend the next 30ish days. If you do manage to secure a few quiet minutes to yourself, perhaps with coffee cup in hand, might we suggest you check out our Time Travel feature about a horrible thing that could’ve happened in York? As well as that, we have all the regulars in full swing, with personal columns to delight (and possibly offend), expert opinions in the gardening and health sections, crazy car-based stories in the motoring section, and all the high-tech doodads you could fling your cash at in the Gadget Guide. And all those glorious, useful, handy, bargainoffering advertisers. And relax.

YORK LIFE
and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
I have a new car. And not new as in: ‘not my catastrophically useless old rust-bucket’. The one which a visiting child once described as a dustbin on wheels. No: new as in ‘actually, genuinely, really and truly never previously driven by anyone else’. It is so exciting that it was worth the trip to Monks Cross. My car history up until now has been pretty run-of-the-mill. Obviously my first car was going to be a red Porsche 911 (this plan was hatched while I was planning My Life As A Yuppie in 1984). As the Yuppie dream somehow turned into Impecunious Freelance Writer, though, it was one second-hand Nissan Micra followed by one pre-loved crumbling, unparkable, lumbering Mondeo Estate, bought to accommodate all the paraphernalia of small children. The perfect car for someone so small she couldn’t see out of the front window.
Yes. This is the first time I have ever owned a new car in my entire life. It is shiny and Italian and slinky and - yes - red. And so I am ridiculously proud of it. In fact, I am officially a Stepford CarOwner. I am parking in the bit of the Askam Bar Tesco car park that nobody parks in (because it means walking a few metres to the entrance, when we all really want to park just by the Customer Services desk), so that nobody can scrape my beautiful red (did I mention it was red?) bodywork in a parking bay. I can’t quite justify faking disability to gain the few extra millimetres, but I am almost tempted to invest in a wheelchair too. I am excessively cautious around the notoriously treacherous school gate. I am undoubtedly the most careful driver on the road. All I lack is a neon sign on the roof saying KEEP AWAY
FROM MY LOVELY NEW RED (DID I MENTION IT WAS RED?) CAR. The Teens are being re-trained in the Ways of Stepford too. After a lifetime of clambering around in the old mobile dustbin with muddy shoes on, they are having to learn that it is not necessary to stand on a car seat, and that they can climb into the

Nor is it necessary to leave half-drunk cartons of juice in the footwell so that someone else treads on them, thus releasing a sticky fountain all over the muddy books that also lurk there. ignore). I might just ban breathing while I’m at it. After all, it might mist up the windows, which would give the hilarious Teens an opportunity to draw phallic symbols with their fingers. Never mind anything never truly disappearing from the internet: anything drawn on a car window with a finger is there forever. Last week, I opened the window to throw out a hair. “What are you doing?” asked Teen Two. “Throwing out a hair, of course,” I replied. “I am not having STRAY HAIRS in my lovely new car.”
So is car sickness. So would be Zhu Zhu hamsters (remember them? Bad luck), if they hadn’t long since fallen out of favour. I still need therapy following a car-sickness-meetsinternal-workings-of-Zhu-Zhuhamster experience in 2010 on the way to Hunmanby Gap. And there’s an added bonus here, in that at least one sickness-prone Teen has to forgo their screen during car journeys. Muddy wellies have to be taken off and put in suitable containers before they are allowed in the car (cue all sorts of moaning, which I merrily

Dear
Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.
Dear Daphne, I’ve got an over sharer in one of my lectures who often hijacks the class and turns it into his own personal counselling session. He’s noisy, argumentative, and loves talking about himself. The thing is, I’m paying for this course and am painfully aware that he’s wasting mine and other students’ money. How do I combat this without sounding like a snitch? Anon
NOISY CLASSMATE
There’s always one! This isn’t something that will be resolved through face to face confrontation. You probably don’t know the subject of your woes well enough to speak to him directly. Therefore I recommend putting in a complaint to your tutor. They should be able to speak to him privately and explain that other people are attending the lectures to learn too. He needs to be a bit more considerate of his classmates, although bear in mind there could be some underlying issues with him.

Dear Daphne, My best friend is getting married and she's having the whole wedding paid for by her rich family but has asked me to pay for an expensive bridesmaid dress, shoes and make up all chosen by her (and all extremely pricey). It's making me resent her and the wedding. In addition, she's being totally insensitive to the fact that I've been with my boyfriend for seven years and he hasn't even proposed by continually asking me about when I'm going to get married. I don’t know when I’m going to get married and I cannot afford the things she has chosen. Help me! Anon
BRIDEZILLA VICTIM
Wow, looks like you’ve got a real life bridezilla on your hands. Weddings can sometimes turn people into temporary monsters who want everything to be perfect on their big day without a spare thought for the other important people on the big day. It’s clear to me that you have well and truly fallen victim to this scenario. If she really is your best friend then she should understand that you don’t have that sort of cash and certainly shouldn’t resent you for it. The dress is a tough one to get out of, - unfair of her - but you’re going to look pretty weird if you don’t buy into this zero-return-on-investment get up. Meanwhile the shoes and makeup should be totally avoidable. Ask your friend if she would mind you buying a budget version of the shoes (maybe suggest she offer her other bridesmaids the same option - they will thank you later) and decline on the make-up, do your own - more time for her to get pampered and more money in your pocket. When she next asks you when you’re getting married, a grown up suggestion would be to retaliate: oh god no! Waste money on something like that? Our love is eternal but we’re saving up for a mortgage darling. Real love is bricks and mortar - not expensive bridesmaids dresses and a big booze up courteously of mum and dad, you shallow demanding cow bag I hate you. I can't afford the stupid dress why are you so inconsiderate! URGH! Why are we even friends anymore?” Just kidding. I’d probably say I’m not sure yet, it’s not the right time for us - I’ll let you know as soon as it happens. Keep it curt - let her know she’s touching a nerve. She might be so wrapped up in her own fairytale that she didn’t even realise she’s pointing out what you conceive to be your lack of. Good luck young bridal warrior; you can do this.
You need to replace the anniversary memories with something new. Call up your girls get them round to get you through, darn it. Why not throw a shanniversary party and drink prosecco and cry your eyes out and sing Kelly Clarkson’s Since You've Been Gone. It sounds like you've been through a really hard time recently, this could be the last big hurdle. You can do this, replace the anniversary with lots of funny memories of you and your friends being silly - you WILL be okay.
Dear Daphne, I’m friends with lots of different people. Two of my closer friends knew each other before I met them. I’ve become good friends with both of them, but when they hang out they rarely invite me, instead opting to see me on a one to one basis when they’re not together. I can’t help but feel left out and I hate the idea of them hanging out without me. Where’s my invite? Anon

NEWS FLASH HONEY: The world doesn’t revolve around you. When you hang out with them do you think to invite the other one? Does the other one also kick off when not invited? We all feel left out from time to time, but it’s important to remember that they probably didn’t even consider your feelings when they arranged to hang out. Sometimes friends hang out on a one to one basis and it’s totally acceptable and fine and not anyone else’s place to get annoyed. What’s more, they were mates before you even came onto the scene. 19TH FEB 20TH MAR

This should be quite a good month financially, especially for independent ladies who have targets and ambitions. Even housebound mums will enjoy an enhanced sense of liberation and freedom, especially in connection with (and perhaps even caused by) romantic interests and agendas. Another thing which brings a degree of delight and satisfaction is in being able to
see how previously made plans and decisions now seem to be bearing healthy fruit. There could be more than one rip-roaring party (the 8th, 9th, and 10th, and then again around the 17th or 18th) but it would be wise to monitor your intake of alcohol, otherwise you could unwittingly become the life and soul of the party – but not in a good way!
ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR
kind of risk, but you’ve got a dollop of destiny and good fortune on your side, so reach out and say “yes” to any opportunity that comes knocking on your door.
There are times this month when you’re going to feel angry, but because you won’t have the energy or inclination to do anything to get it out of your system, you’ll seethe and suffer in silence in the face of various unfair and unjust circumstances. Friends and family try to help, but half the time they’re the cause of your problems, so don’t expect miracles.
TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST M You may not be earning a fortune, but
there are a number of projects on the go which are destined to create pride of achievement and a very great deal of personal satisfaction. This is a very creative period, and I’m sure that creativity will emerge in a number of different ways… Also, it could be a very exciting time for partnerships and romances!
GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN If one door has closed for you during the last couple of months, this is when a new door starts opening. You’ll be a bit twitchy about taking any
CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL Ladies of the sign may find themselves coming up against some old fashioned male arrogance and misogyny, and although this might make your blood boil, bide your time, girls, bide your time! Gentlemen should have a good month in business and financial aspects, probably with little time for
socialising or for dealing with tricky relationship issues.
LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG It’s a Julias Ceasar kind of month – “infamy, infamy, everybody’s got it infamy!” and in affairs of the heart, you won’t be able to do right for doing wrong because some people are impossible to please. In the face of criticism from any quarter, jab your index finger firmly in the air and just ignore what other people are saying and thinking.

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV-21ST DEC
Some very warm romantic energies in the wind and this could be a time for planning weddings and enjoying engagement parties – maybe even long time anniversaries. Some new work routines need to be dealt with and a couple of financial decisions considered, but everything seems to be concentrated on the personal aspect of your life – so sit back and enjoy!
A vibrant and positive month in which a number of worries and anxieties are laid to rest. Your outlook becomes sunnier than it’s been for ages, and some “good things” fall into place around the 10th and 20th. Subtle improvements in romantic energies gain weight over the whole of the month, and a little extra cash maybe earmarked for leisure and pleasure.
LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN
A rather frugal financial month, but by no means an unpleasant one. Some recognisable improvement in emotional moods and situations come to the fore around the 6th or 7th and there will be some small pleasure when someone admits they were wrong while you were right! One specific goal is scored around the 16th, with further gains on the 25th.
There is a feeling here of things coming full circle and falling into place; there is an ongoing energy of change, but you seem to be very much in control of it. Domestic issues dominate, but it is also a very busy time on the work scene, as increasingly, you are asked to assume more responsibility. Perhaps some concern over the health of other people.
SCORPIO 24TH OCT - 22ND NOV
AQUARIUS 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB
Journeys either being undertaken or planned with a boost to your confidence when viewing your mid and long term future. Anything to do with pension plans and savings schemes will attract your attention, perhaps with a decision of commitment made on the 18th. In fortune tellers parlance, you’ll feel that your luck is changing for the better.
With the advent of March there is the acquisition of a brighter and more dynamic mood, and although other people might not be behind you all the way, I think they’ll be content to follow your lead – most of the time! I suppose it depends on where you want to lead them and how you go about doing it! If it was me, I’d go softly softly catchee advertori al monkey!

It’s never too early to learn how to swim, but not all swimming schools are the same. Jorvik Swim Academy is staffed by qualified and friendly instructors who give lessons to youngsters as young as three years of age at the pool at Archbishop Holgate’s School. The Sunday sessions feature small class sizes, in-water instructors to help the littlest of swimmers, and a fun and playful atmosphere. It is a great place to start to get them interested in swimming as a sport, or just as a fun weekly experience that’ll always come in handy. n To find out more about booking in your little splasher, visit www.jorvikswimacademy.co.uk
FINDING OTHERS
If you’ve recently lost your partner, especially one with whom you did almost everything, it can be difficult to socialise and get out of the house. Halves could help; a social group for people who have lost their other half. Meeting every Tuesday lunch time at The Ark Church on Monkgate, the group is filled with friendly people who enjoy getting together for an hour or so to have lunch (it’s free, but donations always welcome!), drink copious amounts of tea and coffee, and to chat to other people who have experienced similar things to you. Halves was formed as way to recognise that bereaved people, especially those who are older, might feel isolated and lonely following the death of their partner. As one member said: “My husband and I did everything together - now he is gone I am having to start again from scratch.” If you feel like that, get along to the Ark Church from noon on Tuesdays and chat, dine, socialise, and – hopefully – have a laugh together. n Call 345870 or email info@arkchurch.co.uk

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE AWFUL ROAD WE ALMOST GOT Usually in this feature we look at an old building or location and discuss the history associated with it. This month, however, we’re talking about something that was never built, and, hopefully, never will be. But first... ever parked your car in the Union Terrace or Marygate car parks and thought, ‘This is handy! Props to the Council for carefully deciding to place car parks here.’ Well, they didn’t. The reason those car parks exists, in areas that used to contain Victorian housing, was due to one of the most ghastly plans for York’s city centre ever conceived by the Council. Yes, far worse than banning cars from Lendal Bridge!
CONGESTION In the 1940s and 50s you could park pretty much wherever you wanted. This is because not that many people had cars, and so there was oodles of space – even right next to the Minster. However, by the start of the 1970s that had changed, and York was becoming increasingly jammed up with traffic and pollution. The solution: an inner ring road, one to take the pressure off the small
18
medieval streets in the heart of the city, and draw it further out to beyond the walls. By 1971 the plans had been drawn up, and it wasn’t great news for many. Imagine giving a child a crayon and asking them to draw as straight a line on a map of York as they could, not caring for what they scribbled over. That is what the inner ring road plans (or tarmac necklace, as it was known) looked like. Starting at the corner of Lord Mayor’s Walk and Gillygate, it would plough through the houses of Union Terrace, cut through Bootham Park playing fields, pass over Bootham, cut down the west-side buildings on St Mary’s, plough through all the houses that once stood on the site of the Marygate car park, cross the river next to Scarborough Rail Bridge, cut around the back of the station, smash right the way through
St Paul’s Church in Holgate (where it would meet a mighty roundabout, replacing the steel rail bridge), plough through the houses along Holgate Road and The Mount, and then meet another huge roundabout on The Mount itself. Then it would’ve followed the line of Scarcroft Road, smashing through houses on Bishy Road (NO!), flying over the river on another concrete bridge near to The Blue Bridge, before meeting another roundabout on Cemetery Road, clearing the houses and buildings around it in the process. After that it would link up with Foss Islands Road, and there you have your ugly great inner ring road.
MADNESS And please believe us, this damn thing nearly happened. The Council went so far as to issue
There was a huge outcry of public anger toward the project, and not just from the displaced families whose homes were in the way. Historians and environmentalists alike united to complain about the sheer number of historic buildings and open green spaces that would have been lost, as well as the unique views that would have been ruined by the road. If
you’ve ever stood on Scarborough Bridge and gazed along the river to see the rising spires of the Minster and the arching majesty of Lendal Bridge, appreciate it – it was very nearly a view of nothing but a concrete slab with traffic whizzing over.
YORK LIFE
compulsory purchase orders to some of the affected areas, including Union Terrace and the streets behind Marygate. And this wasn’t a case of clearing Victorian slums, as happened to Oxford and Cambridge Streets off Holgate Road in the 1960s (which we’ve previously covered), as the Union Terrace houses in particular were fairly large, owned by the occupants, and in good condition. Take a look at the handful of houses that survived to this day and you’ll see why demolishing them seemed like madness.
PHEW In the end, the project fortunately stalled and lost backing... but not before those two areas were cleared. To use the empty space (and, for some time, save it for possible future use if the inner ring road project ever regained interest) the Council opened two new car and coach parks. However, it is easy to understand the anger and resentment of those who lost their homes, seemingly for no reason, and the continued hurt in recent years when the Council considered selling the Union Terrace site to York St John University. Traffic problems today have been somewhat solved by the outer ring road and also schemes like Park and Ride. But, had the plan gone ahead, and had the city been gouged out to make way for a busy road, York wouldn’t possess the charm it does today. It would be like living in Birmingham. Nobody wants that.

I’m a bit of a bitch. My resting face is petulant on a good day and morbid on the bad ones. Many of my friends (thank you guys, I don’t know how you do it) declare that the person they would least like to fall out with in our group is me, and I’m always voted number one person who would win a fight - regardless of the age gender or size of my competitor. It’s a little known secret that I’m actually incredibly weak in arm wrestles mind over matter right? In a society that feels like it becomes meaner every single damn day I’m beginning to think It’s important not to become too hard faced. We read the news and would be forgiven for believing that the world is a terrible place. Last year I got this big massive chip on my shoulder following the Brexit vote and Trump being elected president, so resigned myself to the fact that life was rubbish and people were mean. Thankfully it didn’t last too long. It was December on Coney street. I was in the middle of a night out
feeling a little bit drunk and dramatic after having a booze induced squabble with my other half. I sauntered over to Coney Street to sulk, plonked myself down on the pavement, and sparked up a fag (by the way, i’ve still quit!).
“Hey I was a massively judgemental person and this thing happened that made me a bit less judgemental,” “You alright love?” The voice came from the right. I looked round to see a homeless man shuffle towards me, bag in one hand, drink in the other. “Yeah I’m ok thanks, just fallen out with my boyfriend.” He perched down beside me, put down his bag and started to go through his pockets - I waited for him to ask me for money. Like many
people, I had these preconceived ideas about how people end up on the streets. I wasn't adverse to giving him some change though, so I started looking through my bag to see what I could find. Sensing sudden motion, I quickly looked back up to see his hand in front of me, carefully holding the loose change that he had dug out from his pockets. “Do you need to get a taxi home or something?” He pushed his hand full of change closer towards me. Embarrassed and taken aback I spluttered that I was ok for cash. You know when you just sit there and you wonder where you’ve been the last twenty odd years and why you didn’t even stop to think about the fact that EVERYONE IS HUMAN and WHY DID YOU THINK HE WOULD JUST BE ASKING FOR MONEY KRYSTAL YOU NARROW MINDED
because, quite frankly, I was ashamed of my initial thoughts and that I didn’t do something equally as kind for him in return. I guess I’m trying to say: ‘Hey I was a massively judgemental person that was totally wrapped up in herself and then this thing happened that made me a bit less judgemental, and now I want to spread my experience to save us all future embarrassment and shame of being judgemental about people who we know nothing about.’ Thank you lovely selfless man for changing my perspective on EVERYTHING. I won’t forget you.

FOOL. I didn’t go anywhere, and we chatted about our evenings, his much less dramatic and whiney than my own drunken tale. This bloke was prepared to give me, a complete stranger, the last of what he had just to make sure that I got home ok - despite the fact he was out on the streets. I’m reminded of it every time I see someone sleeping rough or asking for change and I don’t forget it. Kindness comes from the most unexpected of places and I endeavour to be much more like the homeless man I met on the street that night. This story is one that I’ve toyed with the idea of sharing for some time now,

THE
INTERVIEW
MELLOW PELLOW Getting set for his concert at York Barbican on 23rd March, we grabbed a five minute chat with former Wet Wet Wet front man, Marti Pellow. YLL: What kind of gig will it be? Big rock concert or a more intimate performance?
YLL: Hi Marti. MP: Hi there. So, what do you want to talk about today? What wrongs need fixing?
YLL: We understand you're coming to our fair city of York pretty soon. MP: Aye, I am. To the Barbican. Never played that place before, but looking forward to it. They say it's a nice venue, so I think it should be perfect for me. Hopefully those coming will have a nice night and I can entertain you all for a wee while.

MP: Well I've got some some new songs from my new album, Mysterious, which is out this month, and there will also be some old songs too. But, you know, if you can shout loud enough, and I know it, I'll give it a shot. I think you need to find the line between educating and entertaining, so if I was to do just my new stuff I wouldn't keep everyone interested. So I pepper in some songs from the Wet Wet Wet days and other stuff. It'll be pretty funky.
YLL: Is it a large tour? MP: No, not this part, just 12 or 14 venues this time round, before I bugger off and do something else for a while. I think balance in life is really important, as is living! I've just finished doing a lot of musical theatre,
the before that I was on the road with Wet Wet Wet. I've been doing this studio album a lot, too. Now I'm here for this tour. I'm lucky to be able to do that, and afterwards I'll be working on a musical.
YLL: A musical? What's that going to be like? MP: Well my game plan was always to write something like that, that's why I got involved with musical theatre. I'm doing something based on Scottish folk lore. I always looked across the pond for musical inspiration, but I've got this wealth of music and stories right here in Scotland. It'll be quite Middle Earth-y; quite mystical, and drawing on the Celtic instruments. I'm very passionate about it.
“But, you know, if you can shout loud enough, and I know it, I’ll give it a shot.”

S AL E YLL: Is the new album out now? MP: It's out in March, so just in time for this tour. I was over in LA doing some witting there and working on the album. LA has a great pool of musicians to draw upon, so I could say, 'wouldn't it be great to get suchand-such to play?', and we'd give them a call to see if they want to be involved. It was exciting for me – like being a kid in a candy store. We've made something quite special I think. The concert will be a cohesive evening to present the songs in an interesting way, and to make sure the audience enjoy themselves. It's not rocket science. If you overthink it, it won't work. After all, you don't play music, you feel it.
YLL: Have you been to York often? MP: Oh aye, I've played there lots. I played the Grand Opera House for Evita, and also played to 40,000 people at York Races a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful city, rich in heritage. I like it as it's very deeply involved in the arts, so I always enjoy my time there. Looking forward to it!

Local
SPORT REPORT
with Dan Tait
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.
It’s taken a while but Gary Mills seems to have got things going at Bootham Crescent and his ambition of avoiding relegation and FA Trophy success might just be a possibility. A friend said to me recently, that it’s a massive turnaround considering the Guiseley and Gateshead fiasco, but I had to remind him that the team is not exactly the same one and the side more or less resembles Trigger’s broom from Only Fools and Horses.
I had to do a double take recently when a Donald Trump related news article had a headline of “Screw York City”. What have we ever done to him? Who would have thought it but, whisper it quietly, York City might not have a season of complete disaster after all.
It’s not exactly the FA Cup but the FA Trophy has sentimental value to supporters of the Minster men, and Gary Mills for that matter, given the victory in 2012. Of course staying in the league remains the priority and March home fixtures see Eastleigh (Saturday 4th March), Bromley (Saturday 18th) and Southport (Tuesday 21st) which will all hopefully shape York City’s survival bid.
Further afield it’s nice to see the FA Cup recreating a bit of its magic with Sutton United and Lincoln City flying the flag for non-league football in the 5th Round. It is not particularly helped by the powers that be who snub intriguing ties in favour of viewing figures; the prime example being Manchester
United’s recent 4th round win over Wigan which was their 56th consecutive televised FA Cup fixture. Not bad for a team who didn’t want to play in it during the late 1990s. Someone recently tweeted “If it’s a Sutton v Lincoln Cup final, will the BBC show an old Manchester United game instead?” which was a fair point. That tweet was significantly trumped by someone watching Wolverhampton Wanderers FA Cup win at Anfield, when he posted “Stearman and Weimann scoring for Wolves, whose names sound like a Geordie lady begging her husband not to leave”. Since my last column of course we have had the transfer deadline day, or as Richard Osman calls in “underwhelminglatvianmidfielderday”. I really don’t get how some transfers are in the pipeline for the whole month of January, but all of a sudden it picks up pace about two minutes to eleven. Maybe one of the reasons for this is that they say that they are awaiting the paperwork and have sent the faxes. Is there someone at each football headquarters across the world that has shares in Fax Machines? Why are these people not using email?
I reckon 99.9% of faxes sent each year in Britain are sent on Deadline Day.

Pedal Back the Years! Last month we brought you the news that York was having its first professional boxing event in six years when Energise Sports Centre hosts a night billed as the “revival of the Jorvik City”. Further details have now emerged and many Yorkbased fighters have been matched. Paul Gordon faces Somerset born Jacob Lucas over four, three minute rounds, with another Yorkie, Danny Holmes, locking horns with Manchester’s Dale Arrow over the same distance. 20 year old Louis Claridge, also of Yorkshire roots, takes on ‘Mr Reliable’, Kristian Laight. Laight has had a whopping
AN EASYRIDING CYCLING CLUB FOR ANYONE 55 OR OLDER.
257 fights but only 12 wins, so I guess he is reliable at losing. However, jokes aside, having seen one of Britain’s most prolific journeyman in action he can often make fighters frustrated as he uses his vast experience. Scarborough’s George Rhodes and Goole’s Matthew Wrigglesworth are yet to have their challengers confirmed, but top of the bill is the Pocklington Rocket Harry Matthews who fights for the British Challenge Belt in a Yorkshire derby against Hull’s Andy Holmes over eight, three minute rounds. The night promises to be a good one, especially with York’s popular MC Phil Seymour introducing the event. Your Local Link will be covering the show and will feature in next month’s edition.
Come to the Open Day... at Get Cycling’s headquarters at 22 Hospital Fields Rd, Fulford, Saturday 18th March, 2.00 till 4.00. Bring your bike (if you have one) for a free check-over and have a sociable time: with light refreshments. The first ride is along the off road cycle route to Naburn Community Hall, for an indoor picnic and pedal-powered scalextric racing. Saturday 25th March: 10.30am to 4.30pm. No bike? We can lend you one! You can come on the ride without coming to the open day, but you need to book for the one or both. Phone, or email office@getcycling.org.uk.

themselves to bringing up puppies in the right way, then handing them over.
A good few years ago, back in the days of business gurus, Drucker wrote a book about managing volunteer organisations.
Canine Partners gives away those dogs, for free, to eligible disabled people (about 6 per month).
It was a surprise topic. At the time everyone took their lead from blue chip organisations, but of course a management stance of “do this or I will fire you and you will starve” is not management at all. Volunteer organisations must manage people well or they will have no volunteers. I’ve been getting familiar with a charity called Canine Partners who train assistance dogs for people with disabilities. They have two centres, one down south and a fabulous new, purpose-built facility near Loughborough, decked out with everything disabled people need while they stay over and get trained with their new dogs. Making it all happen are the dedicated staff who train the dogs, look after the guests and manage the process. All fabulous. Add to that the legions of puppy parents who dedicate
Here’s the thing.
This is an organisation that sustains rewarding jobs, is beautifully effective at what they do, AND THEY GIVE AWAY THEIR MAIN PRODUCT, for free! How is that even possible? As far as I know they don’t have government contracts to provide services. All they have is goodwill. Donations. This seems possible only because of clear and popular shared values. They believe that disabled people should be supported and enabled. They stand for benevolence. Compassion. Expertise. Independence. The people who give their money and time to support Canine Partners share those values. They are compassionate people who stand for the same thing. By helping this charity, they can take a step closer to making this world the sort of place they want for themselves. Get clear about your values and you
can gather around you an army of supporters who will do anything they can to help you succeed because they want what you want. So here’s the question. Can you make your company values so clear, compelling and popular that attract people around you who want you to succeed so much they will give you their time and money enough that you can give away your product for free? Bonkers, right? Of course not. You’re a cake shop, bakewells are 60p, always have been. I know. But just dream a little, for fun. The world doesn’t have to be how it is. Canine Partners gives away their product and sustains .. well on LinkedIn they’ve chosen the range 50-200 employees. This isn’t impossible. The iPhone was impossible, and that got built. Most of the software that drives the Internet and World Wide Web was built and is maintained for free by volunteers. This article is a provocation to stimulate ideas. Clarifying your brand values is good even if all that changes is you
write your social media posts slightly differently. Even that could boost you by 10%. In case you need help to discover your business or personal values, I’ve built a tool: www.johnallsopp.com (takes 10 minutes). Brand values. Seriously. What Dani
did next
New career path in mind? Wanting to get back into learning to make it happen? York College could help with their Access to HE Diplomas. Our Office & Events Assistant Dani is currently doing just that. Changes to your career path can come at any time during life, but many people might be put off because they don’t have the right qualifications. York College’s Access to HE Diplomas aim to give you what you need in just one year of studying, letting you start your new career quickly. Dani, 20, explains why she chose the diploma: “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was younger and didn’t get the best grades at A Level. I always knew I wanted to make a difference and, now that I’m older, I realise that Law would be the career path for me. I chose this course as a one-year ‘fast track’ to university, and by taking out an
Advanced Learner Loan it meant I didn’t have to pay an upfront fee. “I’ve really enjoyed the Access Law course and the Study Skills module has allowed me to learn referencing before university so that I feel prepared for higher education. I want to go on to study Law at the University of Leeds or Leeds Beckett University before qualifying as a solicitor and specialising in either human rights law or media freedom.” n To find out more about Access courses at York College, go along to their next Open Evening on 8th March, 6-8pm. There’s no need to book, so just turn up! Call 770 400.

AIR TAXI If you’ve ever used the controversial Uber service, you’ll know how convenient it is to use your phone to book and pay for a cab. However, how about that taxi flying you to your destination? That is the plan from Airbus, who recently announced plans to test a flying car prototype by the end of the year. If all goes well, the aerospace company would like to operate a flying taxi service in some of the world’s major cities, with customers hailing the vehicles with their phones and it landing on the street right outside their homes. Fancy that? As amazing as flying cars sound, we’re pretty sure City of York Council will find a way of putting a toll charge on the sky.
Ban the Huge airbag recall robots!
Airbag maker Takata has agreed to pay a whopping £820 million fine after it was discovered that some of their airbags can rupture and shower the interior of the car with shards of metal. The fault has been the direct cause of 12 deaths in the US, and more than 180 serious injuries, and now car manufacturers who use Takata’s airbags are issuing the biggest recall in motoring history. Cars potentially effected by the fault include Audi, BMW, Ford, Land Rover, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen to name a few. These companies should be contacting owners to get a free replacement airbag, but if you’re concerned that your car might affected, contact your customer service agent immediately.
If all the recent news about autonomous cars isn’t something that you think will ever really bear fruit, think again; there are already pressure groups lobbying to have them banned. New York State is one such place, where groups are rallying to ensure the likes of Google, Tesla, and Uber are unable to offer robot-driven taxi services, potentially putting thousands of workers out of a job. One group, the Upstate Transportation Authority, is even requesting a 50 year ban on all autonomous vehicles across the entire state, and with a business-focussed Trump in the White House, that might actually happen. This news comes at the same time that London has started to test autonomous cabs – so it seems the sci-fi films all got it wrong, and London will be the high-tech robot city.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS! They say moving house is one of the most stressful times in your life, but I think moving your business must be right up there. After forty years on the current site in the middle of York we seem to have amassed an amount of “stuff” that any super hoarder would be proud of. Fortunately, now we have recycled the scrap, prepared stock for our sale, and given plenty away to charity, we can now see the light at the end of the store rooms! This is a tremendously exciting time for us as we look forward to the short move out to Monks Cross Drive and our purpose built new showrooms. By the end of April we should be opening the doors to our new home and welcoming customers to come and see our same old faces, but in a new setting designed to showcase the very best in electrical products. We will have dedicated areas for range cookers, built-in ovens and hobs, and a full choice of large fridge freezers to complement the usual dishwashers, wine coolers, dryers, fridges, freezers, microwaves, radios,

HALLELUJAH! We hear you shout. Run to the top of the mountains and scream it from the depths of your lungs: “COLOUR IS BACK AND PERSIAN RUGS ARE HERE TO STAY”. Ok we know that was a teeny tiny bit over the top but we are certified Persian rug lovers here at YLL. We just couldn’t wait to leave that beige life behind. Our MD just did up her whole house (it was stressful, for ALL of us) and there are at least five Persians in her glorious new home. Persian rugs are incredibly versatile and we’re increasingly seeing them used all over the home. They feature in the kitchen as runners to bring colour to neutral and dark work surfaces, in the living room as a centre piece and even in bathrooms for comfort and style. The older they get, the better they look - a rare and precious attribute in today’s throw away society. You’ll seldom find an interior blog that hasn't paid homage to the majestic Iranian works of art. If, like us, you are a lover of Persian rugs, we have got some preeeeeeetty valuable information for you. On 24th and 25th March, James of J Burnside Persian Rug Shop (our MD’s fave Persian rug dealer) is holding a huge exhibition and sale weekend at Wiggington Recreation Hall, Wiggington, York.

Introduced from Mexico in the early 1800s, and named after the Swiss botanist Jaques Denis Choisy, this aromatic, evergreen shrub is popular with gardeners thanks to its highly fragrant and abundant flowers.
COLOUR
More commonly known as ‘Mexican Orange Blossom’ or ‘Mock Orange’ due to the resemblance of the flowers to that of the normal orange plant both in shape and scent, As the name suggests the plant is native to southern North America, from Arizona and south through to Mexico. Choisya produces leathery, glossy green foliage and star shaped white flowers from late spring to summer. As mentioned the flowers are highly fragrant but the foliage when crushed gives off a distinctive aroma to that of Basil. They are an easy to grow, low maintenance shrub, making them ideal for both the novice and experienced gardener.
Some popular varieties of Choisya are C. ternata which produces yellow-green, glossy leaves and a profusion of white flowers in April. If you want to give a splash of intense colour to your garden, C. ternata ‘Sundance’ has bright yellow foliage which will stand out in any garden to give a dramatic, colourful statement with showy white flowers from around May to June. Choisya dewitteana ‘Aztec Pearl’ produces narrow, glossy light green foliage with pink flower buds that open to white in the spring. These shrubs generally prefer sun or part shade in well drained soils and can reach heights of anywhere between 1m (3ft 3") to 3m (9ft 9") dependent on the variety. They produce a rounded habit and are very hardy. In the right conditions Choisya can reach their full size,
but elsewhere they will benefit if sheltered from cold winds as this can damage the foliage and restrict the growth of the plant. They can also be grown in containers and moved under cover in the winter months for protection.
PRUNING Choisya do not require a lot of pruning, but to encourage a second flush of flowers in the autumn, deadhead flowers as soon as they start to drop their petals and cut back around half of the stems by about 12" once the flowers have faded. If you have any frost damaged stems these can be pruned back to where there is new growth but should only be done in the spring time.
firmly, adding a handful of bonemeal to the compost as you fill it in. Once planted water the plant thoroughly.
REAL HEART Big congratulations are due to the staff and customers of Deans Garden Centre in both York and Scarborough. Last year they raised a whopping £21,717.23 for their chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation, through various fundraising events, competitions, and concerts. The chosen charity of 2017 is the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, so get in touch with the team at Deans to find out how you can help. Call 400141
Choisya can be planted at any time of the year but they are normally at their best in early spring. Dig a hole as deep as the container the plant is in and twice the width and plant in
ON TRACK FOR A GREAT SPRING

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Q.
I have a mature dwarf lavatera which last summer became smothered in brown spots on the under surface of the leaves. They are raised, slightly furrylooking, irregular and any size up to about 3mm diameter. Is this rust?
This sounds like lavatera leaf spot. This disease also attacks hollyhocks, known as hollyhock rust, and is now very common in Europe. It mainly attacks hollyhocks, but it can also occur in gardens on a number of malva species and also on lavatera and sidalceas. The symptoms are raised orange-brown pustules that develop on stems, bracts, and particularly on the upper side of the leaf surface. The pustules gradually darken and, in severe attacks, the leaves shrivel and hang down on the stem. Sometimes, almost complete defloration may occur. All of the pustules contain teliospores, only spore type they produce. These form early in the growing season, then germinate immediately and spread the disease to nearby plants. Spores produced later in the year do not germinate until the following spring, surviving the winter in the pustules produced on the lower leaves and stems. Collect and burn diseased plant material in the autumn and repeat this operation in spring to help

Also cut off all the plants to ground level in autumn and remove the first new leaves in spring as a precaution against them becoming infected. Fortnightly spraying with an approved rust fungicide from early spring onwards may be successful. Wet all parts of the plant thoroughly as hollyhock leaves and stems are very hairy and difficult to penetrate. Hope this helps!
Q.
Please could you give me some advice on growing potatoes? I have just built some large raised beds in my garden and I am wondering which varieties to grow.
First you should prepare the soil in your raised beds by digging in some well-rotted manure. This should be done three to four weeks prior to planting. Choosing the potatoes you wish to grow is important, as there are three categories: earlies, mid-season, and main crop. Most seed packaging will give you information about how the potatoes will cook for mash, boiled, roasting, salad, and chipping, etc.
Once you have bought your seed potato you should chit them in trays. Place tubers in a single layer in a tray in a cool, frost-free place, with moderate light – such as an unheated garage. Sprouts form on the potatoes after a few weeks, and once the shoots reach 5cm (2”) the tuber can be chitted from February. Planting should be late March for earlies, or April for mid-season and late varieties. If the weather is not suitable for planting tubers can be left to chit further. You can add a suitable fertilizer to your raised bed, Growmore, or fish blood and bone, which will provide them with everything they need throughout the growing season. To plant potatoes, draw a drill about 10cm (4”) deep with a hoe and place the tubers with sprouts facing upwards in the drill, about 30cm (1') apart in a row, and 70cm (28”) between rows. Cover them with at least 7cm (3”) of soil. Rake the soil slightly to level and mark the rows. As the potato sprout grows, lift the soil up around it to form a ridge, as this will spot the potatoes from going green. The final height of the ridges should be 30cm (1'). Early potatoes are normally ready for lifting after 15 weeks, mid-season 18 weeks, and main crops about 20 weeks. There is nothing like a fresh potato, the on the same day they are picked. Best of luck!

PEAS FRESH FROM THE POD TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. Have you ever tasted peas fresh picked from the pod? Or do your peas come processed from the freezer? Many gardeners shun growing peas believing it to be a fiddly process, preferring the convenience and cheapness of peas in a packet rather than from the pod. For me though, eating the first fresh peas is one of the highlights of early summer, making the effort of growing a crop well worthwhile.
I'LL HAVE A PEA, PLEASE I usually sow my first row of peas very late in March or early April in ground dried and warmed under a clear sheet of polythene. The seeds, these are dried peas if you haven’t grown them before, are set out in a shallow spade-wide excavation or ‘drill’, about five cm deep. Spacing between peas is also about five cm. I like a clear grid pattern, so that there are three or four lines across the drill depending on width. Once sown the
excavated soil is carefully placed back and gently tamped down with a flatheaded rake. All being well young peas should emerge within three weeks. Any longer and they are almost certainly not going to germinate. The most common cause of failure is excessive wet, so I usually keep the polythene in place until the first shoots have appeared.
PROTECTION Once the peas are through, a piece of one metre high chicken wire secured on strong stakes is placed along one side of the row and plastic bird net strung from the top of it to form a kind of tent. The purpose of the wire netting is to enable the pea plants, which have tendrils, to cling and climb. The tent created by adding the plastic netting is to exclude wood pigeons. If these are not kept out they will almost certainly eat off the young plants.
Peas sown in early April should have full pods by the end of June or early July. Because I like peas, I sow several further batches at two week intervals up until about the end of May. This provides a succession of tender fresh peas to harvest through to mid-August. I’m careful to check the crops regularly and harvest any pods that are firm. Hard ‘bullet’ peas from swollen pods are definitely not a gourmet experience.
eaten before the peas swell. I do grow a few of these types which, in some ways, are even more worthwhile as they are expensive to buy. It’s also worth remembering that peas are one of the best vegetable crops to freeze. That way, even in the depths of winter, you can have the convenience of frozen peas, except they’ll be from the garden, not the supermarket.
SHARE TIME!
PEA-RIFFIC! When it comes to varieties my favourite has to be the old garden type Hurst Greenshaft. This produces plants about a metre tall with up to eleven peas in each pod. Because it’s not quite as hardy as some varieties it’s not usually sown until the end of April. For the earlier sowings I prefer another old favourite, Kelvedon Wonder, which produces a shorter plant, or the taller Douce Provence.
If you're getting busy in the garden this month, planting, reducing, and thinning, whatever you do... DON'T THROW YOUR LEFTOVERS AWAY! Kids, how was the most recent birthday party you attended? Same old cake and party games, maybe? Was the birthday boy or girl’s dad dressed up as a clown or something? BOR-ING! How about a party where you can do something you actually enjoy, such as going crazy with a tonne of LEGO? That is just what Minifigs & Bricks on Wigginton Road offer, in their special party room behind the LEGO shop. Enjoy LEGO games, win prizes, build the tallest tower you can, and add to a huge mosaic wall. There are also party options to take home your ingenious LEGO creations, as well as having a professional photo-shoot with the big minifigures! If that all sounds like the best party ever, take this page of the magazine and throw it at your parents, screaming ‘Want! Now!’, and get them to call 690527.

What better place to spend a fresh spring day than a gorgeous meadow by a river? However, if you think you'd have to trek out to the dales or the moors for such an experience, you're wrong – simply get to Rawcliffe Meadows. The Friends of Rawcliffe Meadows in Clifton are inviting one and all to join them on 19th March for a session of cleaning, clearing, and caring for the site of special scientific interest. The day will see volunteers checking the saplings around the meadow, and also weeding wherever needs it. Should be fun, and you'll get to meet a great bunch of environmental warriors. n For more information, visit www.rawcliffemeadows. wordpress.com
Hey, Easyrider...
If you are over 55 and looking for a new and challenging hobby, why not look a little further than golf, bowls, and gardening? York social enterprise, Get Cycling, with help from City of York Council's iTravel, have launched the Easyriding Cycling Club for older people to have fun while getting great exercise. The club is very informal and features full support on all rides, and Get Cycling are even offering free bike loans, including specialised bikes with a companion rider if you have a disability. The best way to find out more about the new group is to attend the Open Day at Get Cycling's base in Hospital Fields Road, 18th March, 2-4pm. You can bring along your own bike (if you have one) to have it checked
over, and enjoy some refreshments. One week later on 25th March you can join the first ride, from Hospital Fields Road at 10.30am, along the off-road cycle track, to Naburn Community Hall. Once there, enjoy an indoor picnic, hang out with your new friends, and go crazy with pedal-powered Scalextric racing! Jim McGurn, Get Cycling's Chief Executive, sums up the club by saying that he's... “looking forward to a relaxing ride with new friends.” So to get yourself rolling, call 636812, or email office@getcycling.org.uk

BOOK ‘EM Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. This month it is World Book Day on the 2nd. Schools, libraries, and book shops will be making a big deal of this, whereas shoe shops, garden centres, and funeral directors probably won’t even mention it. But that is the nature of self promotion. Also, although it is ‘World’ Book Day, I’m not sure there will be huge celebrations in Cambodia, Yemen, or North Korea. But hey, books... Books are good. Let’s be honest; they’re not as good as telly, but they’re pretty good. Certainly my kids like them, and not a day goes by that I don’t hear “Daddy, can you read me this book?” to which I bark, “I’m busy!” and climb back up into the attic. Lolz. That was a joke. In fact, we’re big on the ol’ reading round Mosley-Chalk manor, and both my
wife and I enjoy a regular sit-down read with the kids from one of their favourite books. However, as good for the sprogs as reading is, some of the books that they own and enjoy flipping through aren’t half nuts. In my day a healthy flick through the Argos catalogue was enough to quench my thirst for the written word, but today’s kids need not only narrative, but also bonkers and quite frankly illogical settings. Here are few of theirs that have caught my eye: THE SEVEN SILLY EATERS. This is the story of a hippy couple who live in a cabin by a lake who seem incapable of using birth control. As a result they have seven children in quick succession, each only eating one specific thing. Picky kids, eh? Anyway, the mum essentially
has a breakdown because of this, leading the kids to combine their favourite foods to make a cake for her. As if that’s going to fix anything.
hated them even then. Essentially these are morality tales, but told from the point of view of an evil person. Mr Greedy has food issues and is forced to get thin, Mr Chatterbox is clearly insecure and is shamed into shutting up, and Mr Bump is punished for having some form of dyspraxia. Don’t even get me started on the patronisingly titled Little Miss books – the feminist in me rages at every one.

“MR CHATTERBOX IS CLEARLY INSECURE.” something else that rhymes with ‘cat’) etc. Why this guy has been celebrated as a great children’s author, I’ve genuinely no idea. wrong, the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom are genius works of literature that deserve all the praise they get (including The Gruffalo’s Child, a meta revisiting of the first book, Back to the Future 2 style), but her more recent works are, well, pushing it. Superworm is about a worm without super powers, Zog is about a dragon who doesn’t want to do dragon things, and The Smartest Giant in Town is about a homeless giant who lets mice sleep in his shoes. No. It’s like Donaldson has a quota to fill from her publisher. “So Julia, what’s the new book about?” “Dunno. Have I done worms yet? No? A worm, then. Money please!”
WITH an estimated 35 million smartphones in the UK and usage of tablets increasingly overtaking PCs and laptops, our mobile communication devices are here to stay. However, the human eye wasn’t designed for these 21st century gadgets, so it’s important to use them in moderation. The tiny lettering on smartphone screens can cause eye strain without appropriate spectacles or contact lenses. Reading glasses are often recommended for people over the age of 40 and today’s anti-stress and varifocal lenses can also help you to navigate those closely-packed lines of text. Devices like the Kindle e-reader replicate the appearance of a traditional book to reduce eye fatigue and they’re designed to be held at arm’s length – a useful tip for any mobile device.
We recommend that you never spend more than 20 minutes looking at a portable device without giving your eyes a minute or two to re-focus elsewhere. Also trying zooming in (by pinching two fingers on the screen and pulling them apart) whenever it’s possible to do so. Handheld gadgets can shrink their text to fit the available space, which can be impossible to read without pinching and zooming. Modern devices can increasingly be operated by voice control interfaces such as Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana, which can help reduce the amount of time spent looking at their small fonts. We’d also recommend adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, while sunscreens and anti-glare covers can prevent headaches being caused by reflections or bright sunlight. This latter issue may also be overcome by wearing sunglasses. Mild eye strain caused by overuse of mobile devices can be reduced by using eye drops or trying to blink more frequently. Because people tend to stare intently at computer screens, they blink less often than during other activities, so that this can accelerate the onset of dry eyes, visual fatigue and result in smarting eyes. To combat this, eye drop lubricants are available to aid comfort. For more advice on this issue, please contact VisionCare Optometry at www.wecare4your.vision and any recurring headaches or blurred vision should immediately be reported to us so that we can examine your eyes and identify possible causes. You can book your appointment on-line. Did you know? The world’s first smartphone was launched in 1994, combining email and cellphone capabilities. It was called the IBM Simon, weighed over a pound and didn’t really catch on.

Fancy a night out? You do? Good. But before you grab your dancing shoes, grab your sleeping bag instead. That is because, to help raise awareness of youth homelessness, you could be spending a night under the stars with nothing but cardboard boxes for shelter. Charity SASH, who work to combat young people having to resort to sleeping rough on the streets, are calling on you and your friends to join them for a sleep out at Tang Hall Community Centre on 10th March. The idea of the night is to get people thinking about how hard some young people have it, and all the associated discomfort, cold, and danger they face from sleeping rough. However, on the night there will be plenty of fun, with refreshments, live music, and also a Best Cardboard Shelter contest for the most inventive. Our advice: elevate from the ground and shield from draughts. If you would like to register for what will be a fun and thoughtprovoking night, as well as finding out about other ways SASH helps young people in need, visit www.sash-uk.org.uk or call 652043.

SKINYOGA SANDALWOOD SAFFRON FACE MASK To make the mask I mixed one teaspoon of the powder, which comes in an adorable wooden box, with a few drops of hot water to make a thick paste. I then left a thick layer of the mask on my skin for 15 minutes. I then washed my face with warm water and let my face dry naturally. Once dry my skin texture was smoother, and my cheeks and forehead appeared brighter. I didn’t feel the need to moisturise my face after using the mask as it it felt like I already had. YES TO TOMATOES DETOXIFYING CHARCOAL PAPER MASK Sheet masks are hot right now. They’re much less messy than smearing product on yourself and they take most of the mess with them afterwards too. I used the mask when my face felt greasy and there was visible blackheads. I could tell it had done a good job of cleaning my face - there was not a single bit of make-up anywhere and my skin felt squeeky clean after use. The mask was also great for scaring my boyfriend maybe not the intended use? The mask makers take pride in the fact that it’s also 96% natural! Tested by Dani. £3.49 | www.boots.com

Mmmm... tough one. Oh, wait a minute, it isn't tough at all. IT'S AMAZING! Trust us, we know, as this month one of our sales team, Craig, took his family along to the indoor trampoline park in York Business Park, just off the A1237. We'd love to report that Craig sat back in the cafe, sipping a latte, watching his kids bounce around on the 100 interconnected trampolines and assault courses, but unfortunately Craig was too busy bouncing around himself. Perfect for the whole family (so Craig tells us), Energi offers a refreshing alternative to conventional playgrounds, letting one and all bounce from one end of the huge
HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
Is Energi Trampoline Park fun? building to the other, slam-dunking basketballs, dodging dodgeballs, assaulting assault courses, and playing interactive games as they go. Craig's whole brood had an amazing time, aided by the friendly and helpful staff there to keep everyone safe and happy. Energi also offer private hire for parties, and even fitness classes that take place on the trampolines themselves! Craig didn't try that though; he was exhausted. n To find out more, visit www.energiyork.com

YORK’S BEST KEPT SECRET...
...was meant to be a secret, at The Bar Convent
One of the most commonly heard phrases from new visitors to The Bar Convent is, “I’ve walked past here for years, but never been inside - it’s amazing!” That’s hardly surprising. The convent was designed to be hidden - the Sisters’ work could be punishable by death - so today this important part of York’s history often goes unnoticed. Visit today to see their state-of-the-art Exhibition, which will inspire you with the story of the Bar Convent. Discover three hundred years of history and the remarkable people who have shaped it. Meet the radical Yorkshire nun and pioneer Mary Ward, whose devotion to her cause took her on foot across the Alps - twice. Learn about secrets and spies, angry mobs and Luftwaffe bombs. Hide yourself away inside a priest hole - then find out how to hide an entire chapel. Also find out about the guest house, highly rated café and garden, and the modern conference rooms. n Visit www.bar-convent.org.uk

YORK THEATRE ROYAL To book: 623568.
MURDER, MARGARET, & ME (17TH FEB - 4TH MAR) In the early sixties two national treasures were the creative force behind one of British cinema’s most successful franchises. But there’s an intriguing mystery behind the Miss Marple movies; they were almost never made. Agatha Christie didn’t want Margaret Rutherford to bring her most cherished creation to life. And Margaret Rutherford was mortified at the prospects of sullying her reputation with something as sordid as murder... BLUE STOCKINGS (1ST -11TH MAR) Jessica Swale’s vibrant play follows four young women at Cambridge in 1896 through a tumultuous year. A vote will determine if they will be allowed to graduate and change the future of education for themselves and those who will follow. THE KING & I (8TH-18TH MAR) East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination, staged by York Light Opera. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. MATHEW BOURNE’S EARLY ADVENTURE (24TH25TH MAR) Matthew Bourne returns to his roots in Early Adventures, a programme of hit pieces that launched the career of ‘Britain’s favourite choreographer’ and saw the birth of the style, wit and sheer entertainment that his company New Adventures brought to Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and Sleeping Beauty.

What a result! We have had over 100 applications so far for our Administrator position,
I hope you’re well. Thank you for your team’s distribution this year for The Great Yorkshire Fringe, the brochure was definitely seen
and picked up further afield than we had achieved in 2015 and was cited as a reason for booking for a larger portion of our audience, thanks to the distribution I feel. We will definitely be doing so again in 2017. THE GREAT YORKSHIRE FRINGE
It is not often we come across a company as detailed and professional as you. Team distribution. We have had over 100 vouchers back already from Local Link, please book me another. BEECHWOOD CLOSE HOTEL.
I have had 12 new clients book from my first ad with you. Thanks! Evelyn Bass BUSY HOME CLEANING. We have had an excellent response to our recruitment ad in Local Link, absolutely
loads of applications and enquiries from the website and a brilliant open day as the result. Thank you, we will now use you whenever we have a recruitment need, you have certainly proved yourselves to us. NHS HOSPITAL (YORK)

an absolutely fabulous response and the best response we have ever had from any advertising. Our HR department couldn’t believe that Local Link is a free magazine, given its quality and content. We are very happy, thank you. THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY After the company profile appeared in the new Your Local Link, my phone just rang off the hook. Thank you, please let me know when I can have another one! Neil Webster UPVC WINDOW DOCTOR Please pass on my thanks in regards to the special series of adverts in January. I had specifically asked for a campaign to reflect my business, and you could have not done a better job! Paul. QUARTZ TRAVEL I would not hesitate to recommend localink to anyone looking for good value advertising in the York area. YORK CATS PROTECTION Thanks to Your Local Link we have had more than 20 new members joining Creating Cooperating Community. CREATING COOPERATING COMMUNITY We only use Local Link to advertise locally.
Why? Because it works. Every time. BRADSHAWS DIRECT. The only advertising I do locally is with yourselves, in the magazine and online. I have built my
decorating business of the back of it and it really works. I am now thinking of talking on an apprentice as I am stacked out with work. I cannot believe how well it has all worked for me, it’s great not having to worry about where my next job is coming from and knowing I can rely on your magazine coming out reliably month after month and bringing in the quality local enquiries all the time. CHAPPLE DECORATING
We have had fantastic response from our recruitment advert which gave us the chance to cherry pick the best candidates. The same advert in the local press was going to be £2,000 and we will definitely come back to you when we need more staff. I love the magazine and often keep it on the coffee table, each time I read it I spot something different so I never throw it away. PAPAKATA BOOK AN ADVERT TODAY!
