Sow seeds of fun with the kids as part of National Children’s Gardening Week, which runs until 6 June. Our resident gardener, Tony, is talking about growing courgettes, and we’ve put together a mini list of easy to grow plants and veggies to attempt with your little ones on page 34. I’ve chosen courgettes, chillis and coriander for my first foray into gardening and I’ve found it to be surprisingly reassuring. Waking up and checking on my baby plants each morning has really given me a consistent mood boost.

Planning employee holidays can be difficult enough for a business in a normal year. This year there is an additional potential headache for employers as from 17 May people are allowed to go on holiday to “green list countries”.

As the green list is reviewed every 3 weeks you need to be prepared. As an employer you need to plan now how you will manage this to avoid disruption to your business.

Plan You should be encouraging your employees to take holiday, but also reminding them of their obligations if they plan to travel abroad. Plan what your policy is in relation to the following issues: • Do you need your employee to confirm if they are planning to travel to an amber or red list country when booking their leave?

• Will you refuse to allow leave for travel to an amber or red list country?

• Do you expect them to return to the UK early to avoid any additional restrictions announced while they are away?

• Will you allow them to work from home if they have to self-isolate or hotel quarantine on return?

• Will your employee need to have enough leave to cover any time in isolation or quarantine or can they use unpaid leave?

• Will you allow them to return to work before they have met any COVID testing requirements on their return?

Review You should review your holiday booking process and any forms used to request and authorize leave. You may need to make a temporary amendment to your staff handbook.

Communicate You should communicate clearly and early any changes to your normal holiday leave policy and apply it consistently.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

BARKSTON ASH AND SAXTON

After a rather unpromising start across some stark open fields, this walk improves as it ventures into the undulating hills that fringe the western edge of the Vale of York. The gentle ups and downs that follow provide frequent views, including a glimpse of York Minster. Most of the walk is on good paths that are easy to follow. At one point, the route is obstructed by a newly planted potato field. There’s also a short stretch along a lane that carries some traffic, especially motorbikes at weekends. to follow the diversion which is no easier to traverse than the potato ridges of the official and more direct 1 Starting from the junction of Back Lane and the route). At the hedge corner, continue ahead on the A162 on the edge of Barkston Ash cross the main field edge with a hedge to the left. Then follow the road and go up tarmacked Oldgates Lane opposite obvious track downhill to reach a busy road at the (if alighting from the bus at the Ash Tree Inn stop, Crooked Billet pub. go along the main road for a few metres before 3 Cross the road to the track opposite and a crossing and turning up Oldgates Lane). The recommended starting Hours Miles point is the junction of London Road (A162) and Back Lane on the edge of Barkston Ash. Barkston Ash is 15 miles from York via the A64 and A162. Ample parking is available on Back Lane, which is a left turn off the A162 at the south (far) end of the village just after the closed Ash Tree pub. Public transport access to the start is difficult. The only feasible route is a Coastliner bus to Tadcaster bus station followed by a meandering trip on the infrequent 492 service (alight Ash Tree stop).

Go through this and walk through the small wood to find steps leading down to the main road.

This month, our resident sports writer and York City F.C. fan, Simon Pattinson, watches the final pieces of Bootham Crescent go to their new owners.

It has been a quiet few weeks whilst I write this column. The end of an era has arrived, as Bootham Crescent, piece by piece is slowly dismantled in front of our eyes. Fans have been collecting their seats (me included) and other various parts of the ground that people have bought during the recent auction (that reminds me, did anyone actually buy the urinals!?). This week it became very real for me when I saw that the ‘Welcome’ sign above the gates of Bootham Crescent had been taken down. This ground has been the heart and soul of a community for 80 years and to see it go, in the way the coronavirus outbreak has forced it to, with many fans not even being able to see us play there once last time is truly heartbreaking. In what have been difficult circumstances, the club’s has done their best with what they can. For us and those who played in the fans match that took place recently, it will be a long-lasting memory that you just can’t beat. It was also very moving watching the floodlight switch off, seeing the glowing white beams that have shone down lighting up the surrounding streets for years. The night lights epitomise

many York fans’ Tuesday nights at Bootham Crescent.

For many football fans, myself included, there is something quite romantic about it. The lights were switched off by long-standing City fan, James - fondly known to many as Trigger, who has supported the club for so many years now home and away and dedicated his time volunteering at the club. It couldn’t have been anyone more deserving.

Also as I write this, Liam McGuiness has been appointed as the club’s new commercial manager taking over from the brilliant Chris Pegg and I’m sure he will continue to build on the excellent work Chris has put in place as we move forward into the new stadium. Speaking of which, the new stadium has a friendly fixture to look forward to as York City begin their first pre-season at the community stadium with Newcastle United: announced as one of the first teams to take on the Minstermen there with what I am hoping will be one of many big names to play at the LNER. In that time I also hope that this will be a City side that will have been assembled

in good time to gel and get a better rhythm going than what this season-that-never-was offered. It feels like I can get excited about football again but I know I will be back to disappointment before I know it...!

Looking at the Knights it has certainly been a much more difficult start to the season in the Championship, but there is still a way to go yet and hopefully,

The return of Mikey Lewis who comes in from Hull KR and James McDonnell from Wigan Warriors is sure to help bolster the side over the coming weeks and months and more importantly, it is the Knights who will be the first of the two sporting teams at the new stadium to welcome fans and it could not be better timed.

Apprenticeship funding for York Businesses Looking to take your business up a notch? Small and medium businesses and charities in York can now get hold of extra funds to go towards hiring new apprentices or developing existing employees.

The funding is being made available by City of York Council from unallocated funds from its Apprenticeship Levy and comes as part of the council’s efforts to support the creation of apprenticeship opportunities for people of all ages.

The total amount available to local businesses each year could be around £100,000, with individual businesses being able to request a portion to offset the training and assessment costs for new apprenticeship starts. This funding is in addition to the Government’s

financial incentives, of up to £4,000** for employers who hire a new apprentice.

York businesses and charitable organisations are being encouraged to come forward if they would like support to provide apprenticeship opportunities for new or existing employees.

SPEND YOUR BUDGET WISELY No matter how you go about it, a bathroom is an expensive refurbishment project. Especially if you want to do it properly, make it last a lifetime and ensure it adds value to your house rather than take value away! It is also the room that people seem to leave until last. You may spend on a kitchen because it looks tired or the doors have broken, but more often than not, people only have new bathrooms when everything else is done: this means that money is tight and how you spend your budget is more important than ever.

A fully project-managed bathroom from start to finish can cost anywhere between £7,000 and £12,000 depending on the size of the room, products chosen and works undertaken but at Karemel Bespoke Bathrooms Ltd, we always try and make your budget go that little bit further by spending your money on the most important items.

First and foremost, spend your budget on the things that move – taps, showers, shower enclosures, toilet seats and furniture (if you want opening doors).

Secondly, don’t forget the finishing touches – accessories make a bathroom useable, and you need to remember to account for them in your costings.

Without them, you have a lovely room which is not very user friendly which would defeat the whole object.

Finally, ensure your budget is realistic for what you want. Unfortunately, no matter how hard installers try, a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget is never achievable. A good installer will talk you through how realistic your budget is and what compromises can be made - just make sure you listen!

Of all the summer cropping vegetables, perhaps the easiest to grow are courgettes. They’re also one of the most bountiful. In July and August, it’s quite possible to pick three or four courgettes from a single plant every week. At times this is a vegetable that’s just too easy, producing more courgettes than can be eaten.

Courgettes may be straightforward to grow once the plants are established but getting them started can be tricky. Sensitive to even a nip of frost, courgettes can’t be safely planted outside until the end of May. Although it’s possible to start them off by sowing in the ground a few weeks earlier, germination is often poor. A far better option is to sow in pots indoors or in a greenhouse at the beginning of May and set out strong young plants at the end of the month. An even easier option is to buy a few plants from a garden centre.

Books and websites will tell you courgettes require a sunny spot on rich moisture retentive soil. While this may be their preference, courgettes will crop in most situations including in some shade. If manure or good garden compost is available, it’s certainly worth digging it in before planting. This helps both feed the plants and hold water. It’s

also best not to crowd the plants. A fully grown courgette has a wide wingspan, so space about 40 centimetres apart.

Although courgettes can be grown in pots, containers or even grow bags, these need to be of a good size. One plant will usually be enough (perhaps two in a long grow bag).

Once courgettes have been planted, most problems are minor and weatherrelated. In wet conditions, slugs can nibble or even eat off young plants.

Dreary weather may also cause the first baby courgettes to rot from the flower end due to poor pollination.

Otherwise, it’s dry conditions that are more of a problem. Courgettes are thirsty plants. Copious watering is needed in dry spells.

Apart from water, the only other attention courgettes need is frequent harvesting. Cut when 10-12 centimetres long. Allowing courgettes to grow much larger will inhibit the formation of new fruit. Give them away if you’re overwhelmed! When left too long on the plant, a courgette will soon swell to marrow size. Watered and harvested regularly, courgettes should continue to crop well into September, perhaps even early October if the weather is kind. Towards the end of the season, powdery mildew (a white

coating on the leaves causing them to go yellow and shrivel) can be a problem. Watering helps fend this off but may not prevent it entirely. Another issue sometimes encountered is viruses resulting in stunted plants bearing distorted courgettes. If this is a problem try a virus-resistant type in future.

And talking of varieties, courgettes aren’t all green or oblong in shape.

Some are green striped, some are yellow-skinned and some are even spherical. I’m not a great fan of the latter, but the yellow variety Atena Polka is a favourite producing an abundance of tender fruit on robust plants. I’d never be without this one or the green-skinned Defender. This is a virus-resistant type that’s reliable and prolific. There are many others to choose from, but if you’re looking for varieties to make courgette growing even easier, these two are good bets.

Cut plastic cups and yoghurt pots in half, replace caps on glass jars.

Soda cans attract small animals looking for food and shade. Please rinse and crush before recycling. Fold back the tab to block off the hole on the top. Animals often step in gum, which becomes matted in their fur or feathers, making it difficult for them to move. Wrap in paper before binning.

Please cut these before binning or recycling, including all sections of plastic six-pack rings and the inner diamonds.

Take care National Carers Week runs from 7th-13th June. The annual campaign raises awareness for caring, highlights the challenges that unpaid carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities across the UK. It can also help people who might not have thought of themselves as carers to identify as such and access support.

The theme for this year is Making Caring Visible and Valued.

SO WHAT IS A CARER? There are an estimated 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers.

Following the pandemic, many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support.

National Carers Week defines a carer as someone who: ‘[1] Cares (unpaid) for family or friends who have a disability, illness or who need support in later life: Washing them.

And their laundry. And their dishes.

Keeping appointments. And records.

And tempers.

Giving medicine.

And time. And hugs. Filling forms. And fridges. And silences. Dealing with doctors. And nurses. And pharmacists.

And social workers. And benefits agencies. And care workers. And a lack of sleep.

Meet Jack, presented

by Mind Matters for Education and Falling Stars Theatre, focuses on identifying emotions and developing healthy coping techniques for kids through an interactive performance.

The audience will follow the story of a boy called Jack and all of the

emotions he faces in a busy week.

Jack’s week ends with an explosion of feelings, and the play looks back over the week to see what made Jack feel anxious and withdrawn.

York Family Mediation Service welcomes government voucher scheme The government has announced that it is investing £1m in family mediation, to support families to resolve issues relating to children.

Under the scheme, the Ministry of Justice will provide contributions of up to £500 per family, to resolve issues relating to children following parental separation. Mediation will be provided by Family Mediation Council Accredited (FMCA) mediators and the fund will reduce the costs of mediation for at least 2000 families.

Family mediation is a process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator helps parents work out arrangements for children and finances following separation.

Mediation can also be helpful when previous child arrangements need to change, particularly as children grow up.

Carol Etherington, Manager of York Family Mediation Service, said ‘This brilliant new voucher scheme will really help separating parents who are worried about the cost of using Family Mediation. We already provide legally-aided mediation,

whereby those who are eligible because they are relying on benefits or who are working but still have low incomes can get some or even all of their appointments with us free of charge. The Ministry of Justice voucher scheme will enable our charity to help even more families who are breaking up by supporting them with the costs of using our service, which is especially important in these difficult times where parents may have been furloughed or otherwise affected by the recent lockdowns.’

Looking to elevate your at-home G&T game? Luxury Yorkshire Producers, Otterbeck Distillery and Annabel’s Deliciously British have come together to launch a delectably fresh, berryinfused flavoured gin with a delicious pink peppercorn finish – Cotton Gin Strawberry and Pink Peppercorn.

We served the Strawberry and Pink Peppercorn Gin on ice with frozen berries, tonic water, a fresh strawberry to garnish and a sprig of mint.

The gin has a fresh and fruity finish, with pine and citrus undertones. A refreshing drink deserving of a glorious summer evening and the bottle makes a beautiful addition to anyone’s drinks cabinet, too!

INGREDIENTS For the sponge mixture: •175g (6 oz) self raising flour •½ level teaspoon baking powder •175 grams Stork •175g (6 oz) caster sugar •3 medium eggs •1 tablespoon elderflower cordial •Finely grated zest of 1 lemon For the syrup: •Juice of 1 lemon, strained •1 tablespoon elderflower cordial •55g (2 oz) caster sugar For the filling: •115g (4 oz) icing sugar •40 grams Stork •1-2 teaspoons elderflower cordial •3-4 tablespoons lemon curd For the thin glace icing: •55g (2 oz) icing sugar for glace icing METHOD

1.Sift the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl, add the remaining cake ingredients and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.

2. Spoon the mixture into 2 greased

and base lined 20cm cake tins.

3. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C, 160°C fan oven, Gas 4 for 30-40 minutes or until cooked. Turn out on to a wire tray.

4. Put the lemon juice, elderflower and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.

5. Whilst the cake is warm, make a few deep holes with a skewer and drizzle the syrup over so that it soaks into the cake.

6. Place the icing sugar, Stork and elderflower in a bowl and mix well until smooth. Split the cakes horizontally in half. Spread the base cake half with 1/3 of the icing and1/3 lemon curd.

Top with the second cake and repeat layers until the icing and curd are used up and finishing with the final layer of cake on top.

7. Decorate with a thin glace icing made with the icing sugar and a little lemon juice and drizzled over the top of the cake. Finish with edible flowers if liked.
