we may have occasionally thought that, we never actually did 'stuff it' and have spent the last month slaving over hot desks to create a damn fine summery issue of Your Local Link (or “YLL” as the youth call it). In your hands you shall find a packed issue of local delights, from special features and

Hi guys and welco... wait... hang on.

Right, we've all just kicked off our shoes, slid out of our Sensible Business Attire, and collectively flung on shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and flip-flops. Because June. Right, that's better. We're now ready to face the first of the summer months; one that (usually) brings with it hot days, clear skies, and the constant temptation to say, 'stuff work, I'm off to the beach!' You'll be happy to hear that, although

For a start, we delve into the history of a lump of rock in the Museum Gardens, revealing a fascinating past, and then we took a pleasant (and sweaty) jaunt around dear old Haxby, creating a fun edition of Treasure Hunt. There was a turtle. No Joke.

It will quickly become your one-stop York online shop. beautiful Haxby! Join us as we take a stroll through the wee town just north of the city, and spy out a turtle or two. For realsies.

Our newly revamped website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won't find in the magazine. This month, feast your eyes upon...

That dodgy car park by Cliffords Tower is being transformed this summer, whisking visitors back to the time of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Rose Theatre will stage four of the bard's plays, and we have all the deets...

INTERVIEWS

COLUMNS:

KEN DODD. In this interview, that took place about a year before the comedic legend's death, and just before what would be his final show in York, we chatted about what inspired him, what he thought about modern comedians, and why he did what he did so well.

TIM VINE. Speaking of modern comedians, we caught up with the funny chap just before he unveiled a plaque dedicated to Ken Dodd at The Grand Opera House, and heard about his new bonkers show.

OLIVER PHELPS. Better known for playing George Weasley in the Harry Potter films, Oliver is just about to hit the stage in The Case of the Frightened Lady. We find out about the show, his theatre debut, and about life after Potter. MICHAEL MORPURGO. The awardwinning author, writer of best-sellers like War Horse, is in York this month to open the Festival of Ideas. We chatted about what he's doing for that, and also about his huge body of work. JOHN FINNEMORE. The writer and comedian, creator of BBC Radio's Cabin Pressure, chats about his new touring production, Flying Visit, and what audiences can expect.

FEATURES CITY WALL WALK. Grab your phone and take a stroll along the two miles of city wall, using our online tour as a guide. Read tasty historical titbits and hear some fascinating stories. Mind your step though, eh?

THE CULTURE VULTURE. Every month we get the low down on what is happening in the city, culture-wise, from our own resident Canadian, Anne. She's got sass by the bucketload, mind, and doesn't quite 'get' our strange British ways. Neither do we, though...

LARGER MAGAZINE FEATURES The website also hosts larger, expanded versions of our magazine articles, such as Time Travel and Treasure Hunt. More bang for your buck. But it's also all free. Noice.

52-53. KRYSTAL’S GEMS. This month Krystal writes enthusiastically about how to become a Millennial Legend. You might not be able to afford a house, but you can read this column for free!

14-15. YORK LIFE. Rachel is slightly concerned that she is, at long last, turning into her mother. 48-49. HOWARD. Howard is a Republican. Not the American kind, mind – the British kind that thinks the Royals are dumb. Hear him spout off.

Bespoke and life in general Design Manufacture Instal ation AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

“I have reached that age”, muses the narrator of Anita Brookner’s Incidents in the Rue Langier, “when a woman begins to perceive that she is growing into the person she least plans to resemble: her mother”. Well, I know just how she feels. The other day, I was having a quiet rummage in my photo collection in the vain hope of finding a picture of myself that didn’t belong on Crimewatch or on the front page of the local paper (“Mad Woman Chucks Teenager’s Gadgets Into The Ouse In A Fit Of Pique” kind of thing) – and all of a sudden, I saw my mother’s eyes staring up at me. Now, some people will have grown up knowing (thanks to a looking-glass) that they are destined to become their mothers. But I’m not one of them. At school, I was surrounded by miniature carbon-copies of old (well, everyone’s old when you’re five) women – while I, blonde, blue-eyed, round-faced, short-sighted – wondered if my dark, chiselled, perfect-sighted Mummy

hadn’t found me in the local orphanage. Either that or the Landings Lane RSPCA place, which is where I once very kindly told my younger sister we had picked her up.

harmlessly ironing a pile of socks and tea towels – when a friend who dropped by asked me what on earth I was doing. Now, ironing socks and tea towels seems to me to be a perfectly good use of my time. And why? Because my mother does it. And this similarity seems to be coming out more and more – as I notice when I find myself inexplicably drawn to the windows of estate agents in the vicinity of Bootham and Petergate. What’s more, I seem to have inherited her habit of throwing food away if it’s more than about half an hour old, and a hardy Yorkshire refusal to take anyone

to A&E unless their arm has actually dropped off. I already have a shortlist of names for the whippet puppies I am not having. And I wouldn’t dream of using a dish cloth more than once, never mind one of those scary sponges, which are evidently harbouring E. coli, listeria and salmonella even before you’ve taken them out of their plastic packaging. Of course, I’m not yoonique (and my mother would slap me round the chops for suggesting I was. Rightly so). We are in fact all destined to become our parents. The interchangeable George Bushes Jnr and Snr are a prime example. And, while the Royal Family may think they’ve successfully ejected Her Ferginess from their inner circle she is in fact still there – only now in duplicate, in the form of Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. It could be worse. When I think of the mad relatives I could have turned into, then I count myself jolly lucky. In fact, it’s just my son whom I feel sorry for, if Oscar Wilde is to be believed: “All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does, and that is his.”

CLUB

OKAY FOR CROQUET? Is there anything more quintessentially English than a game of croquet on the lawn while the summer sun shines down? If you’ve always fancied having a go, but the sport remains something ‘other people do’, York Croquet Club could help. As the adsorbing strategy game is making a comeback, York Croquet Club is running an Introduction to Association Croquet over six evenings, three Tuesdays and three Thursdays, starting 12th June. The club is small and friendly and always welcomes new members, regardless of previous experience. n To find out more about the evenings, and the club, call 620211 or visit www.yorkcroquet.org

GET THE BALL ROLLING...

They would love for you to join them, as this is a game for all ages, and no experience is needed: just an appetite for meeting others. n To find out more, pop in on a Tuesday evening or email wiggypetanque.york52@yahoo.com

PAUSE FOR A CAUSE Are you crafty? If so, how about putting those talents to good and benefiting some very worthwhile causes? Craft with a Cause is a volunteer group that meets every Wednesday at St Columba’s United Reformed Church. Together they make things to be donated to charitable causes, and in the past have knitted scarves for orphans in Moldova, created gift cards to raise funds for homeless people in York, and also made useful items for new mothers. If you’re a whiz at the old hand-made game, and would like to help out while making a batch of new friends, find out more by emailing katiestcolumbas@gmail.com

THE BREAST OF FRIENDS York Breast Friends is a local group that helps women who have had a breast cancer diagnosis. They offer support and advice, as well as being a wonderful way to make new friends who have gone, or who are going, through something similar to you. They also hold fun social events, such as this one at Marks and Spencer: a fashion and beauty evening. Taking place in the Parliament Street store on 5th June, 6.30pm, attendees will see post-surgery lingerie on the night and get advice from stylists and trained fitters. You can enjoy drinks and nibbles, and find out more about what the group does to help those fighting breast cancer. n To find out more about them, and to book your free tickets for the evening, call 07516 066599 or email info@yorkbreastfriends.org

JUNE

GEMINI

HERE ARE A FEW FA M O U S FAC E S YO U S H A R E YO U R S I G N W I T H. . .

21ST MAY 20TH JUNE

Some conflict in the work place may be getting to you, but it is not up to you to resolve these issues, so just keep your head down and let other people sort it out. Domestic moods will be influenced by financial situations, and there could be conflict within the family with regard to financial priorities. Parents may have to temporarily close the shutters on “The Bank of Mum and Dad” – especially the parents of demanding teenagers!

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

One door closes while another opens. As the “opening door” is the one to go through, let’s celebrate rather than commiserate. It’s time to dump anything that is old and past its sell-by date and there are new adventures beckoning. Some changes on the job scene are to your advantage, so the golden rule is to “follow the money”. If colleagues get up your nose, ignore them.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

For many members of the sign “Flaming

June” could turn out to be something of a damp squib. Restlessness and frustration are frequent companions in the weeks ahead. You’ve got plenty of energy and ambition, but it needs closer focus and some kind of release mechanism. Lovers and partners are sympathetic and genuinely try to be helpful.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL This sounds cynical, but you’ll be examining present relationships and measuring them against relationships

L to R: Anne Frank, Donald Trump, Natalie Portman, Prince

Relationships do not exactly bloom in this atmosphere, but in some cases many partnerships will get stronger in the face of common adversity. There is a distinct lightening of mood during the last days of the month, with some love and laughter in the air for couples who can do what it takes to find a little bit more time for each other. Business contracts and work related documents being scrutinised around the 26th/27th give you a clearer and brighter view of the months ahead.

you’ve had in the past. Some of you will feel that you’re on to a good thing, while others will wonder what might have happened if only… This is NOT a good way to think, and for your own sake, you need to change your way of thinking pronto!

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

A bright and breezy month for most members of the sign, with a lot of social activity and some exciting new work commitments. Certainly, it looks like being a profitable month in hard cash

terms with something falling nicely into place on the 9th and then again on the 17th and 18th. Self employed people get a big buzz of new confidence at this time.

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22NF SEPT

On the work scene someone gives back word or goes back on a promise. This is annoying but there is an important lesson to be learned – don’t automatically trust all your friends and colleagues! Brighter moods manifest from the 14th onwards, and the last

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT

Much of what I wrote in May remains relevant throughout June, but now there is an added impetus of enthusiasm and confidence, especially if you’re home building or home searching. Anyone thinking “outside the box” should be getting green lights all the way, and there is massive emotional support from partners – or someone who wants to become one.

SCORPIO23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

You can afford to back off a bit, coast and go with the flow. You’ve done what you’ve needed to do, said what you’ve needed to say, and now it is up to other people to respond. They will do so in favourable ways, but do not be impatient. Nice career/cash energies around the 23rd/24th with some stubborn obstacles being removed around the 28th/29th.

SAGITTARIUS22ND NOV-21ST DEC

Communication within family circles is very important at this time, so try to be clear with your thoughts and words. Some concern for a younger male member of the family is understandable, but it looks like a case of “no harm done”. Changes in long term future plans occur very gradually, but there is

definitely a mood of change in the wind.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN My May horoscope is still relevant in June, but now there is a feeling of getting on top of things and writing your own rule book. Changes to work routines may cause minor wobbles, but there is a mood of promotion in the wind. In the event of having to make major career choices, use your common sense, and put financial security first.

YORK LIFE

couple of weeks of the month should be busy and bright and breezy, with some unexpected gains made.

AQUARIUS20TH JAN - 18TH

FEBMoney

comes in, then immediately goes out again! You may be spending on something big, but this will be perceived as a necessity rather than a luxury, and at the end of the day, money is there to be used. Just be thankful that you’ve got some! Anything to do with property and long term investments gets a bright green light for “go”.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

Career girls do exceptionally well at this time, while male members of the sign may find their work routines and commuter routes are changing (to their advantage)! Younger, inexperienced Piscesians, may find they’ve got a couple of tough life lessons to learn, but, as they say, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!” Short cuts should be avoided, especially mid-month.

TREASURE HUNT

No, not a creepy M. Night Shayamalan movie, but rather a pleasant wander through Haxby. Join us as we take a stroll, spotting small details as we go.

1.

2.

We start in the village on The Village (that’s the name of the street) outside the Ryedale Court Shopping Centre. With Co-op behind, turn to the left and start walking.

• Which barbers sounds like a ‘90s boy band? • According to the Tiger Inn, what is the distance to the gas?

• In which year was Haxby Memorial Hall built? • This might be Haxby, but where should you go for a new carpet?

5.

Throw a left along the lane near the end of the street.

• What do St Leonard’s Hospice want you to know is an offence?

Keep heading along The Village.

Cross the road and enter the church yard. Get ready for a round of 'READING GRAVESTONES!' Woop! Be sure to search around the back of the church, as that is the way we're heading. • Where did Alexander

Dixon Williamson die? • How old was Charlotte Noble when she died? • What were Charlotte Bland's last words?

Exit the rear of the church yard onto North Lane. Head to the left.

• What kind of welcome will the lion give you? • When was a building down here “Formally the first Methodist Chapel”?

6.

Cross the road and keep heading to the right.

• According to the notice board, what never happens? • What time do Northern Scientific take lunch?

7.

Cross the road to the pond. • What creatures

are Haxby Town Council keen not to encourage? • Wandering around the pond, what house has an appropriate – if exaggerated – name? • Can you spot the resident terrapin that lives in the pond? No joke. His name is Charles D. Terrapin. Have a good look (but don't fall in!).

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE CARVED STONE IN THE MUSEUM GARDENS Which one, you ask? Well, this month we're not discussing one of the many carved and ruined stones that once made up St Mary's Abbey, but rather another, often-overlooked, lump of rock... that is probably the oldest thing in York. Like waaay old.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that the history of York started with the Romans, and although they certainly helped put the city on the world map, the stone in question would already have been at least 1000 years old when Emperor Claudius arrived in Britain in 43CE. Oh, and by the way, this ancient relic of great

historical and cultural importance is just sitting out in the Museum Gardens for tourists to sit and eat their ice creams on.

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT Walk along the path from the entrance on Museum Street toward the museum itself, and you'll pass by a low, fairly inconspicuous lump of rock. To be fair to those who have never noticed it, the stone blends in well with all the fallen chunks of ex-abbey used to line the paths, ring mighty trees, and add texture to rockeries. But this one stone is different in that its carvings don't hint at grand medieval doorways or column capitals, but are instead circular, and worn down to near invisibility. The stone, which as far as we can tell is nameless (although it has been given the title ROB2A in Chappell & Brown's 'Prehistoric Rock Art in the North York Moors' book – therefore we shall refer

to it as Robby), is believed to be of Bronze Age origin, a time that spanned from around 2500 to 800 BCE. There was no city back then, and human habitation of the area seems to have been restricted to a raised ridge of land to the north of Heslington – think of Lamel Hill, the one-time Civil War gun emplacement in the grounds of The Retreat, that is believed to have started life as a Bronze Age burial mound.

SHIFTED Apart from a few burials, and some simple tools, not a lot has been discovered in York to throw light on life in the Bronze Age. Certainly no great hulking stone circles have been discovered, so where did our Robby come from?

Enter the Victorians, who, after William the Conqueror (and, we hasten to add, the Nazis), are probably the Time Travel feature's biggest villains. Imagine toffy-nosed imperialists tearing historically significant artefacts out of the ground without recording their positions, and then dumping them in their gardens because it looked pretty, and you're not far off from the truth. As far as we can tell, Robby found its way into the possession of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in 1895, donated by a Canon Raines.

been a part of larger carved Bronze Age stones from a barrow at Fylingdales, near Ravenscar. Many of those carved stones were uprooted and cemented into the wall of the Raven Hall Hotel in Ravenscar, while others were stored there and displayed as curiosities. While the wall stones still exist to this day, the others are missing... leading many to believe that one was donated to York and now sits happily in the city's nicest public park. Not technically a local, but neither was Dick Turpin.

The carving on the stone features six groups of concentric circles, each with a grove running from the centre out to the edge and beyond. The central, larger circle is the best preserved, while the others are eroded quite a lot. What the patterns signify, nobody can be sure, but one thing we do know is that the stone isn't from York. It has been moved. Twice.

Having the stone sitting out and exposed to the elements is, in our opinion, a strange choice, but it does mean that a part of cultural heritage – one that far predates the typical idea of history in York – is available for all to see and, crucially, touch. What the patterns mean, we can't be sure; but if they were associated with the burial barrow at Fylingdales they probably had major significance to our ancestors. So maybe go and sit on one of the other stones, eh?

SPORTREPORT

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

No sooner has the football season ended, and optimism begins to rear its ugly head. After York City picked up a paltry 1 point from a possible 18 in the final throes of the campaign to finish a dismal 11th place, supporters were at their lowest ebb. Fast forward a couple of weeks and signing three new players in a week (all from Gateshead) has got fans of the Minstermen giddy with excitement; particularly when one player’s surname is ‘York’, where some are claiming it’s a sign. Well I guess when you finish slap bang in mid table for your first foray in regionalised football the only way is up.

As is the way for most followers of lower league football, any new players signing on the dotted line means some extensive research of their former

with Dan Tait

Nowadays, research usually means a quick scan on Wikipedia which is exactly what I did for Wes York, where I found the really informative entry of “Wesley York is an English football player”. glories: which used to comprise of someone saying a bloke in a pub said his brother’s mate’s cousin’s dog said player XXXX was good. Nowadays, research usually means a quick scan on Wikipedia which is exactly what I did for Wes York, where I found the really informative entry of “Wesley York is an English football player”.

Burrowing deep

I didn’t fair much better for Jordan Burrow on Wikipedia so I explored the BBC website for the games he, York, and Russell Penn played in the last few

months of the season. It took a while to locate Burrow on the score sheet, but finally I got some success in early April where I scrolled down to read about his goal hoping for a bursting run from his own box where he left three players in his wake before finally unleashing a rocket from all of 35 yards into the top corner of the net. Unfortunately, his goal against Eastleigh was described as one in which he didn’t know a lot about, as the ball bounced off the striker and looped into the net. To be fair if he scores with nose every week, and it leads to York City getting out of the National League North,

we will all be happy. So we will soon find out if Wes York and Jordan Burrow will make a difference and we already know a lot about former captain Russell Penn who has resigned. Experienced Spennymoor right back Kallum Griffiths has also joined as well as some players from the youth team stepping up with pro contracts. At time of writing Martin Gray has said he is looking for two more signings, which equates to a similar nucleus to last season, which has me slightly worried. As one of my work colleagues pointed out, things will work out if those last two signings are

Messi and Ronaldo. I would happily just take a couple from Harrogate Town, something I thought I would never write. However, credit where credit is due; our Yorkshire neighbours fully deserved their promotion after playing some terrific attacking football and scoring over 100 goals in the process.

FORE! York City supporters have a chance to meet past and present players at the club’s annual Golf Day which is being held on Thursday 19th July at Pike Hills Golf Club in Askham Bryan. Alistair Burns, the managing secretary at Pike Hills, said “We are delighted to have been offered the chance to host what is already a very successful event for York City Football Club. We are looking forward to welcoming the players and guests to our club on July 19th”. The event forms part of the York City Vice presidents annual fund-raising

efforts, and all money raised through sponsorship, competitive holes, green fees, and raffles goes into the football club. Entry costs £40 per person (£160 for a team of four) and includes a dinner and prize presentation after the 18 hole tournament. Registration on the day is between 12noon-1.30pm and tee-off time is 2pm. Prizes are awarded to the first five teams and there are also 'Nearest the Pin' prizes. An auction of sporting items will also take place after the tournament. n To register for this year's Golf Day please send an email to ycfcgolf@gmail. com

SAUDI ROYAL? WE HAVE JUST THE NUMBER PLATE FOR YOU

news

We’ve written before about crazy expensive number plates, but currently going up for auction, and expected to raise more than £10 million (!), is S111 EKH. Coz it looks like Sheikh, dunnit? Well, it does when you take into account the black plate screw sits between the first and second 1, making it look like a H. Anyway, although the sale is quite interesting, what we really wanted to tell you is that, now the new ‘18’ reg plates have been released, the DVLA have had to ban several combinations, including... ‘18 OOB’, ‘PU18 BES’, and ‘BO18 CKS’. Lol.

ARE YOU A HONKER? Your car horn – use it a lot? If you’re fan of tooting the old tooter, be it to signal to friends you pass, or to show that moron who just cut you up what you think of him, read on. Did you know that using your horn for anything other than making road users more aware of you is illegal? Also, using your

horn at all between 11pm and 7am is also illegal, except in an emergency. We were also shocked to find out that honking in anger, even at someone who is driving dangerously, could land you with a £1000 fine! What? You have been horned.

GADGETGUIDE AQUABOT WATER BOTTLE. With thoughts on the warm weather, how about this interesting new water bottle? Drinking water is important on sunny days, but so is soaking your mates for a laugh. The Aquabot Water Bottle features a water pistol-like pump to build up pressure, and a spray release to hose your sweaty face (or the faces of others) down, cooling you off. To be honest, we just love the photo – look how happy she is to be squirting herself in the face. n £29.99 from www.thefowndry.com

THE MARATHON HELPED EVERYONE TO BREATHE BETTER

No, we don’t mean that the recent London Marathon made spectators fitter, but it did reduce their risks of dying from pollution. During April’s marathon, in which around 40,000 runners

tackled the 26 mile course, motor vehicles were banned from many areas of the capital. According to Kings College London, this resulted in a whopping 89% drop in harmful levels of pollution – something that contributes to the deaths of ten of thousands of people each year in the UK. Quite an eye opener, and hopefully it will encourage a greater shift to low emission cars.

Celebrating 8 years of Kitchens

Beautifully designed around you We love a good birthday at YLL HQ, so when we found out that York Kitchens is celebrating 8 years this month, we went over there to find out a little bit more about owner Olly Shipley, and his thriving kitchen business.

York Kitchens has been providing homes all over York with quality kitchens since 2010. Director, Olly originally cut his teeth as a joiner for the well respected homebuilding company, Persimmon Homes, but found his niche when he began fitting kitchens. After several years working in the kitchen industry as a fitter, Olly took over York Kitchens. Despite rising through the ranks, it’s still Olly who will personally design the perfect kitchen for customers when they come into the showroom. With both practical and design knowledge, it’s easy for him to listen to what customers want, and create a kitchen that not only looks great, but

also functions exactly as it should. York Kitchens support the customer from concept to completion: “We specialise in the whole package and take hassle away from the customers, we’re not just a design company” Olly explains. With three teams of kitchen fitters and project management offered as standard there’s very little the customer needs to oversee once they’ve settled on the design, other than what’s going to be for tea for a while. There are a lot of great things to say about York Kitchens, but none of them sound better than when they come from a happy customer: “After the initial discussions and visit to the house, York

Kitchens created a number of designs suiting the brief. They really captured what I had envisaged. After choosing the final design we then selected the final details and finishing touches to suit our budget and compliment the kitchen design. York kitchens managed the entire project from start to finish, keeping us up to date with the progression throughout. The result was most impressive.” York Kitchens provide a complete design to installation service from a beautiful range of carefully selected kitchen collections including modern and traditional options with up to 25 years warranty.

MEANWHILE, ON THE SAFE SIDE...

Recently I was interviewed on BBC Radio York. No, I've not spun off from the world of home appliances to pursue a carer in comedy; I was on there to discuss the safety of fridge freezers due to a recent uproar concerning units with plastic backs. ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD

I need to say here that house fires caused by fridge freezers are very low – especially in Britain where we have some of the toughest safety standards in the world. Also, the newspapers painted the story as 'argh! Plastic-backed fridges will kill you!' which just isn't true. Still, if these tests encourage more manufacturers to put metal backs on their units, it would've been worth it.

FLUFFING IT While on the wireless, I also talked about the tumble dryer issues that made headlines. They were found to be the household appliance most likely to cause a fire in your home, so regularly clean the fluff filter. If left to build up the fluff or lint could potentially increase the chances of the machine catching fire. So scoop out all that weird purple stuff. Finally I was asked whether it was a good idea to buy second hand machines. My answer: no. My reason being that you have no idea of the history of that machine, and a poor repair is far more likely to cause damage to your property (be it your home, clothing or crockery) than an unmolested appliance. For more advice, you know where to find me!

Flooring

Perfect Ponds

We hear from Mel Collier of JDL… Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after Gone are the days your pond and fish. when our only flooring options within a bathroom were carpet and cork tiles (thank goodness), as the choices we have are almost infinite. Here are some pros and cons.

TILING As we all know, there are hundreds of different tiles on the market, but you need to choose tiles with caution. If your bathroom is larger than average, a patterned tile would be the perfect choice, and dependent on the overall look you are going for, you can choose anything from Victoriana to modern geometrical and even wood effect tiles.

LAMINATE/LINO There are many different laminates and linos to choose from and they also range in thickness and application. If you are worried about slippery surfaces you can even get non-slip or safety flooring which looks nice and has the added benefit of being practical.

WOOD Although I would never recommend a natural wooden flooring in a bathroom (wood, water and steam don’t mix) there are many alternatives on the market that give you the feel and look without the heartache. They key to all flooring is make sure it works for you and ask your bathroom installer for help and advice. Here at JDL we have samples which we can show you in your home as part of your complete bathroom installation.

Visit www.jdl.co.uk.

Finally summer seems to have arrived! This is the perfect time to think about solar powered water features and pumps. Solar technology has improved massively in recent years, panels are cheaper and more powerful, and batteries are better. Solar Oxygenators will add air whenever the sun shines, keeping fish happy and stopping them ‘gasping’ at the surface when temperatures soar. These are a simple pump attached to a solar panel, and air flows down a tube into the pond and comes out of a stone, bubbling back up to the surface.

GETTING PUMPED Solar fountains are the simplest way to add movement to a pond. A pump sits in the pond and the fountain jets above the surface of the water when the sun shines. A solar panel sits outside the pond attached to the pump by a cable. You can get more powerful pumps and larger panels if you want a bigger fountain. With all solar products there’s no need for mains power. You get the most from them if you angle the solar panel toward the sun at the time of day you want the pump to work, or the middle of the day if it has a battery.

Enjoy your pond!

Fit for a King A favourite in English gardens for centuries, Lavenders are perennial herbs that grow from woody bases.

They form compact little shrubs with silvery needle-like leaves and slender stalks topped with very fragrant purple red pink or white flowers. The leaves are just as aromatic as the flowers. All lavenders prefer full sun and welldrained alkaline soil. Lavender should be planted in the spring with spacing about 1½ to 3 feet apart. They can be divided, if necessary, but this is best done in the autumn. Mulch in winter with bark or compost. Flower stalks can be cut just before they are fully bloomed and hung upside down in a dry, dark place until dry for use in sachets and potpourris. The most popular varieties of lavenders are:

ENGLISH (TRUE LAVENDER OR OLD ENGLISH LAVENDER) English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia or L. officinalis) include varieties such as ‘Hidcote’ with deep purple flowers growing up to approximately 16 inches, which makes a good plant for hedging. ‘Munstead Dwarf’, with its low growing and compact habit with violet flowers,

this dense, bushy shrub is perfect for edging paths. English lavender, also known as “true” lavender, is the hardiest variety; it also has a sweeter scent than other varieties and is traditionally used to create lavender oil.

FRENCH LAVENDER French lavender (Lavandula dentata or Lavandula stoechas). The foliage on this type of lavender is greyer and the flowers are a lighter shade of purple and even white flowers. French lavender will need frost protection in a hard English winter.

DUTCH LAVENDER Lavandula x intermedia ‘Vera’ is of rounded habit and bears grey leaves and fragrant pale blue flowers. The leaves of the Dutch group tend to be larger than most Lavender. They prefer full sun and well drained soil. How to care for Lavender (pruning) Lavender grows well and doesn’t require a lot of watering or maintenance. However, just like most plants, lavender will look better and be healthier with the right type of pruning. Cut the branches back about 1/3 of their length in the spring, just after flowering. A big plant that has been neglected

can be trimmed a little farther, about halfway, as long as you leave green foliage behind and do not cut down to the woody part. Cut the flower wand stems, which are usually bright green, as well as the stems with the gray leaves. Shape the plant into a ball, or a hedge with straight sides and a rounded top. Prune only lightly if the plant is more than three years old and has never been pruned. You can increase the amount of pruning slightly each following year until you are pruning normally. Never prune your lavender plant all the way back to the woody part of the branches---this will probably kill it. What Can You Plant With Lavender Plants? Lavender thrives in cool, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. Combining lavender with plants having similar cultural requirements creates a Mediterranean-themed planting bed. Plants like Rosemary, English Rose, Artemesia, and Cistus can also be planted with other herbs.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

Chris, how do I prune lavender to keep it tidy and flowering throughout the summer?

English lavender is a fully to half hardy evergreen shrub with aromatic, often grey-green foliage and scented flowers, which are usually mauve or purple, but sometimes white and pink, in summer. Lavender is best grown in rows to form a low, flowering hedge. To use as a hedge, or as edging, plant nine-12 inches part. Annual pruning keeps specimen and hedging plants compact and clothed with foliage to ground level. There are many cultivars and hybrids, including ‘hidcote’ and ‘the dwarf munstead’.

WHEN TO PRUNE In warm climates prune in autumn. However, in cooler climates only deadhead in autumn to tidy the plant,

delaying pruning until the spring. Prune young plants hard to encourage bushy growth. Clip over established plants, removing most of the previous seasons growth. If deadheading in autumn, simply

remove the long, bare flower stems, leaving the foliage on the plant over winter to protect young growth buds. Prune hedges in the same way. Be sure to replace old and neglected specimens with new plants when you can, and enjoy the great look, and – more importantly – the smell of these lovely plants.

SHRUBS FOR TUBS If it’s a formal look you’re after, clipped bay trees by the front door, a shaped yew tree on the patio, and upright conifers on the balcony will add a touch of class to even the smallest garden. Bay ‘laurus nobilis’ responds well to formal clipping and is ideal to use in pairs by the front or back door. There is also the bonus of bay leaves for the kitchen. Box ‘boxus sempervirens’ thrive on formal clipping, and is really tough. You can buy ready-clipped plants from good nurseries and garden centres, though you will still have to keep it trimmed. If you want to train your own, which is much cheaper, buy a tall growing variety and cut it into shape as it grows. Many informal shrubs (those with a loose outline or spreading profile such as Japanese

maples and aucuba Japonica) make excellent container shrubs. Choosing pots that match your shrub and patio is very important because a tall shrub in a small pot will always blow over when it is windy, and probably break. Planting is important, too: place a thick layer of crocks or large gravel in the bottom of the container to improve drainage, remembering that it must also have drainage holes. Add a good loambased compost, such as John Innes No. 3, to a depth that will bring the root-ball to within two inches of the rim of the container. Don’t depend on garden soil, as container plants use a lot of nutrients and the soil probably won’t have enough to feed the plant. Remove the shrub from the container, teasing out a few of the large roots, and trickle compost around until it’s level with the top of the root ball, then water well. Water two to three times a week in the summer, and once a week in winter. After that, regular feeding is a must. Enjoy!

DON’T BE WEEDY

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.

“Don’t be weedy” was a favourite shout of one of my PE teachers. Humiliation, rather than motivation, was his style. His exhortation is one I’m always reminded of when on the plot at this time of year. Weeds may just be ‘flowers in the wrong place’, but lush weed growth in late spring can rapidly overwhelm a plot. Keeping on top of the weeds is a must, but it doesn’t always have to be a battle. There are several ways of making weed control easier. When considering weed control it’s worth remembering that there are really two types of weed, perennial and annual. Perennials are those that live for several years or more and generally grow from roots in the soil. Examples include bindweed, ground elder, couch grass, buttercup and dock. Annual weeds are those that mainly sprout and die in one growing season. Examples

include chickweed, groundsel, fat hen and goose grass.

WEEDING THEM OUT There are several ways to control weeds: sometimes neatly categorised as chemical, physical and cultural. The chemical, or weed killer method, is one I never use and all organic gardeners should avoid. Physical is the manual destruction of weeds by tool or hand. This can be by forking out, gentle hoeing or, in desperation, yanking. Cultural is the more sophisticated method and the one requiring least effort. Perennial weeds are the most difficult to control. The easiest long term ‘cultural’ method is suppression by mulching. For this to be effective the mulch material used must be durable, impenetrable by weed roots, exclude light and, most importantly, stay in place for an entire

growing season. To clear perennial weeds on new ground I put down thick black plastic sheeting, the type used by farmers to cover silage clamps, in spring. By late autumn most perennial weeds will have died out. The downside is that the ground can’t easily be used for growing while the sheeting is in place, although you can cut holes and plant crops such as courgettes or pumpkins that aren’t so easily choked by the weeds that will also poke through.

STALE MATE Another simple cultural method good for annual weeds is the so-called ‘stale’ seedbed. This involves preparing ground about two weeks before sowing a crop. Tilling the soil leads to a flush of weeds from seed newly brought close to the surface. Just before the crop is sown these seedling weeds are destroyed by very shallow hoeing or raking. This enables the crop to germinate and grow away with reduced competition and less need for fiddly weeding of the baby plants. This method is particularly useful for tiny

seedlings vulnerable to smothering such as carrots. When it comes to physical weed control, hoeing will help keep all but the most persistent and deep rooted perennial weeds in check. Unless you’re a dab hand at wielding the hoe it’s usually also necessary to get down and remove weed seedlings nestling next to the crop by hand. However you do it, regular weeding in late spring and early summer is the best way to control weeds, especially annuals that will readily seed if allowed to grow. If you don’t want to be permanently weedy remember that old gardening adage: “one year’s seeding is seven years weeding”.

ROYAL RUMBLE

H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N took over after the civil war seemed to be just as big a tyrant as the guy he had executed. I can imagine Oliver Cromwell tweeting a bit like Trump: GOING TO IRELAND. THEY DRINK LOTS AND SMILE. SAD. TAKING THE ARMY. LET'S MAKE ENGLAND GREAT AGAIN. #MEGA

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. Recently a rich woman had a baby and many people got excited about it. I am of course talking about the birth of William and Kate's (AKA the Duke and Princess of... I don't know...) third baby, although my wife had to tell me about that, because I was busy having a life and being too cool to notice. The last time I wrote about politics was just prior to last year's general election, when I likened the Tories to the Galactic Empire from Star Wars; an oppressive and evil regime. This month I'll be likening the royal family to an underwater fish tank; completely pointless.

ONE DAY IN DONCASTER... I would say I'm definitely a Republican – not in the American sense of the word, which seems to include approving of Trump as president, thinking God is important, and being concerned about what happens in a woman's uterus. No, I mean in the British sense, which mostly focusses on the removal of the monarchy. Ideally via catapult. My anti-royal sentiment started when I was eight. I very vividly remember standing amongst crowds along Doncaster High Street,

watching the Queen drive by on her way to some ceremonial visit at the town's Mansion House. My mum asked me if I wanted to see the Queen, and I was quite curious, initially thinking that she was popping into Woolworths for a three pack of old lady knickers. What I actually saw was a bunch of people giddy with excitement, anxiously waiting to wave at a passing Rolls Royce. As she passed, a lady standing next to my mum blurted out 'oh my god, I can't believe it's her!' I was embarrassed. For her, and the rest of Britain.

PLATES Following that, I did some research. I discerned that while the Queen couldn't actually tell me what to do, nor have my head chopped off on a whim, ala Queenie from Blackadder, she did have some power over those people who we elected to represent us. That didn't sit right with me, and the next Christmas, as my family gathered around the telly to watch the Queen's speech, I revealed that I thought she, and the whole royal family, were dumb.

THE FUTURE My grandmother passionately disagreed, saying the Queen worked very hard for us all every day. My nan owned several commemorative plates, which sat high on a shelf, adorned with images of the royal family smiling. One, of Charles and Diana holding baby William, was positioned next to a framed photo of my mum and dad holding baby me. I can't quite remember which one got dusted more frequently.

@LORD_PROTECTOR Trouble is, just prior to my republican revelation, I had completed a school project about the English Civil War. That, famously, ended with the decapitation of the King and the establishment of an English Republic – way before America won independence from the crown, and France made revolutions popular and sexy. We had already killed our monarch, so why were the people of Doncaster almost fainting at the sight of one, and why did my nan not have room on her top shelf for a photo of me at the top of the tallest tree in the park that I printed and framed for her? Unfortunately the guy that

“I was embarrassed. For her, and the rest of Britain.”

48

However, politics aside, I just hate it when people fawn over wholly unimpressive individuals. Had Stephen Hawking been rolling though Doncaster that day, or had Neil Armstrong been cartwheeling by the Frenchgate Centre, I would have whooped and cheered. Sure, the Queen seems like a nice old biddy, and the power she has over us is ceremonial and never used, but so is the 'you can shoot a Scot from the city walls with a crossbow on a Sunday' law we have here in York. Although it's very interesting and quirky, and delights the tourists when you tell them, you wouldn't actually want to see its legality tested, would you? The trouble is, the royals keep having children and reinventing themselves to appeal to the next generation of their subjects, so their popularity might not die out as soon as I would like. Just think on this: young Prince George might have looked adorable as he greeted President Obama in his dressing gown, but in the future, as King, he might decide to 'get more involved' and order 'his' Royal Navy to nuke Denmark for a laugh. Jus' sayin'.

TAKING CARE Do you care for a family member or close friend? If so, you’re one of an increasing number of people in the UK who do so, both full and part time, and this article is for you. Taking place 11th-17th June is the annual Carers Week, a time to give thanks to all those hard-working carers who give their time and dedication to others who need it. It is also a chance to find our about caring, how you can help, and also for carers themselves to get advice and info that could improve their lives.

The primary reason for National Carers Week is to show that nobody has to struggle alone. There are probably other people in your neighbourhood who also care for someone, and working together – even if that means getting together and talking about the stresses you both feel – might help. As well as making new friends who might offer advice, there are many organisations out there who can also assist you, and a great resource for any carer is www.carersweek.org You'll find tonnes of helpful information,

including the latest on benefits, and even events to attend to ensure you get some 'me' time.

H O W D O YO U F E E L ? The 2018 Carers Week will be focussing on ways carers can stay healthy, happy and feel connected to others. It is so very important to recognise that carers are individuals with health and well-being needs of their own, as those needs and rights can often be overlooked – especially if they care for someone with a serious illness or disability. The week will also throw light on the plight of carers who manage to hold down other jobs. According to www. carersweek.org, three million people in the UK care for someone while also having a job of their own, and a whopping million of those feel isolated and lonely while at work as a result. Having little to no time to themselves outside of caring and working can lead to depression, which in turn can have detrimental effects of their health.

W H AT C A N YO U D O ? If you're a carer, get talking. Organise an event, such as a coffee morning, book club, or even a massive concert. Anything that gets the message out there will help. Also, ask your friends if they care for someone, and if so, what support could you lend each other? Be sure to talk to your kids or grand-kids, or young people you know, about caring. The earlier children know just how many people are carers, the better prepared and informed our communities will be. Whatever you organise, be sure to upload the details to the Carers Week website.
