This walk of minor ups and downs explores two Howardian Hills villages and the countryside inbetween, including several woods. With one exception, (underlined in the Directions), the walk is easy to follow with mainly well-waymarked paths and good surfaces underfoot.

1 Staring from Welburn with the Crown and Cushion pub behind you go left along the street.

Take the first road on the right (Church Lane). Where the tarmac ends by the church continue ahead on the track uphill across an open field. At the top do not go ahead between the ornamental pillars but turn sharp right on the track alongside the wood.

Continue, ignoring a crossing footpath, to eventually reach a road.

The recommended starting Hours Miles point is the centre of Welburn. Welburn is 14 miles from York just off the A64. There’s ample roadside parking on the village street. It’s also possible to park and start from Bulmer. Coastliner buses 840 and 843 run frequently from the railway station and Stonebow to near Welburn, stopping at the end of the lane leading to the village from the A64.

Refreshments There are no refreshment opportunities in Bulmer but Welburn has the Crown and Cushion pub and Dogh café in the centre of the village, both open daily.

What to see The chief attraction of this walk is the rolling, well-wooded, countryside. Brandrith Wood, in particular, is a fine example of deciduous woodland. Both Welburn and Bulmer are attractive stone-built villages, the latter having an ancient church. This is also a walk of views: across to Castle Howard and over the Vale of York. Other features passed include the Four Faces monument and the magnificent King Oak.

6 Cross the road and go left following a faint path alongside it beside the trees. Go through the wall with the road and then under the grand archway, watching out for traffic. Beyond turn immediately right down a tarmac drive signed as a public footpath. Continue for over a kilometre to a staggered crossing track marked by a four-way footpath sign.

Where this ends, go half left across the field aiming for the spire of Welburn Church. Turn right after the field corner gate on the roadside pavement back to the centre of Welburn.

Continue on this clear path until just before the Four Faces monument ahead.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Haxby Road is in dire need of a new roof. To raise funds, the Art Deco theatre is organising a Buy a Tile donation scheme, where people can contribute to the cost of the repairs. The amount needed to fund the repairs is £45,000.

The theatre, which was built in 1935, has been entertaining York residents and visitors for 85 years and still has its original roof, which is now leaking.

Without these repairs to the old roofs, the theatre risks damage to the fabric of its building, which is Grade II listed.

Dan Shrimpton, chair of the board of trustees, said: “We have been staging shows and entertaining local

Wood meadow brings y b x a H r fo t s oo b y it s r e iv d bio Plans for a new wood meadow in Haxby are growing into fruition after the idea was put forward by a member of the public.

It's being called West Nooks Wood Meadow and is located just off Landing Lane by the River Foss in Haxby.

Alan Robertshaw put the idea forward and regularly walks his dog on the land. He said: “It just struck me that it would be a nice area, with all the publicity these days about encouraging

pollinators and so on, it's all under trees and by the river, and potentially, you know, could encourage a lot of wildlife.

Not just pollinators, there are squirrels there and all sorts already, but if it was left more uncut then it might be a bit more encouraging for nature.”

Alan approached several people about the idea, and once he got through to the right team at the council, he was met with a positive response.

“Hopefully, it will become part of a bigger thing such as the River Foss wildlife corridor. There are already lots of little places where there are woods and open spaces that aren’t farmed.”

Dan Carne from Wood Meadow Trust said: “Even not mowing the grass will make a huge difference to the wildlife, particularly for things like butterflies.

Most of the time they’re dependant on a particular species of grass or flower and they will lay their eggs on this particular plant and the caterpillars will only eat this particular plant. When they emerge as adults, they can take nectar from all sorts of places, you know, people’s gardens and wherever. But if you keep mowing a meadow, it’s impossible for them to lay their eggs, and they can’t survive very easily.”

The green space has got some potential, Dan explains: “I did a survey of the grassland and looking at the potential for wildflowers and what was already present, I found that whilst it’s not very diverse at the moment there

were, in places, a few flowers that given the opportunity would flower if they weren’t getting mowed.

On-site there’s already a few patches of Lesser Celandine, there’s Cuckooflower and Meadowsweet in patches particularly near the old pond, and a little bit of yarrow.”

There’s scope for the local community to get involved, too: “I’m hoping that we will be able to involve the community in the management of that space moving forward. Because it’s beautiful and it’s got a lot of potential for the community as well as for wildlife. The aim is mainly just to enhance the community experience.”

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access your degree or higher-level qualification with us and find your way to a prosperous career. The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is designed for people who do not have ‘traditional’ qualifications, such as A Levels, and for those who have been out of education for some time. This month, our resident sports writer and York City F.C. fan, Simon Pattinson, is looking forward to the summer season.

At the time of writing, I am gearing up for finally being able to see England perform in Euro 2020 (or Euro 2021 as we are now in).

A tournament in which we will hopefully see one of the best England sides for a long time step up and bring the nation together at a time when I think we all need it.

I also have to mention Ben Godfrey, who may not be in the 26-man squad for the tournament but was called up into the senior England squad and received his two caps - a proud moment for the former York City youth player and for all of us in York.

New signings are now beginning to come through the door at York City. I think any football fan loves the merrygo-round of the transfer window, and with the Minstermen, it is certainly no different. The addition of 23-year-old striker Kurt Willoughby has been a great start to the proceedings. It came as no surprise that Steve Watson went on to get his man after chasing him for the last two years whilst at fellow National League North side AFC Fylde.

in four games for City in a month's loan spell back in the 2019/20 season - a time that feels so long ago now! For me, it is certainly the area we need to recruit well in this summer. Anyone who has followed my column over the last couple of months will know it is something I have touched on as being a real area of weakness.

That, and adding to the midfield we currently have, would really be a strong spine for the season ahead.

From what we all saw, chances were

being created but not enough of those chances converted into goals.

Hopefully, this will be corrected by Steve Watson this summer. I think this will be Steve Watson's biggest summer and an opportunity to finally get out of National League North. He needs to get this right from the off. I know he has had many critics in the last year or so, particularly during this last stop-start season, but I do believe he can be the man to take us back up the leagues and has all the credentials to do so.

Let's hope I'm right!

Looking at the rugby, the Knights continue to go from strength to strength and are heading to Wembley in the 1895 Cup after defeating Swinton. They will meet the Featherstone Rovers on July 17 for the final. To play in the final is such an achievement in itself. Speaking of finals, a massive well done to the York City Knights Ladies who played in the Challenge Cup final. What a feat to make it, and an incredible journey for a team who played in the final having only been together for a matter of weeks. It was a great performance but against a big team like St Helens, it was they who showed their class and went on to win comfortably in the end 34-6.

It cannot go unmentioned what a great spectacle it was for women's rugby and for a big step forward for the women's rugby league in York.

GETTING BACK TO NORMAL… ALMOST! It’s been really fabulous to see so many customers returning to our stores this month, and I wanted to share with you a few insights into what to expect if you visit now that things are starting to return to normality. We are, of course, still doing our utmost to prevent any spread of the virus within our stores.

That means cleaning multiple times a day, sanitiser on entry, distancing signs out and protective barriers in place at the tills but because our stores are all very spacious, you will be guaranteed a fuss-free and relaxing atmosphere even when all the current restrictions are possibly removed.

If you are shopping for an appliance then I’m happy to report that stock levels are returning to something like normal. Our warehouse is now bulging again with 1000s of washers, fridges, freezers, ovens and hobs - but there are a few exceptions as the pandemic continues to cause some disruption, most notably dishwashers, double ovens and range cookers. The demand for dishwashers is still outstripping supply with the market in something like 30% growth since we are all spending more time at home and therefore washing up more. It’s also due to the increased hygiene levels and ultra-low water consumption offered by a modern dishwasher.

In the UK, we are also seeing a squeeze on built-in double ovens; these are products made only for our market as no other region uses them, so, unfortunately, manufacturers are unlikely to prioritise their production capacity to make our double ovens so it’s lucky we have grabbed some stock. Finally, range cookers seem to be featuring highly on

BOTANICALS I don’t know whether it’s because most of us were kept inside last year, but a big trend we’ve seen this year in bathrooms and all interior spaces is botanicals. From a well-placed single plant to a jungle of grasses, it seems foliage is the way to go, and we have been loving it here at Karemel Bespoke Bathrooms Ltd. For a long time now, whenever I do a 3D design of somebody’s bathroom before installation and it seems to be missing something: I add a plant on a shelf, and the whole thing just seems to come alive. A few years ago, one of my customers even went out and bought the plants I had shown him on the design just so it could match!

My clients have been asking me for botanical wallpaper, blinds with foliage on and even tiles with leaves and flowers on to make a statement, and the results are not only beautiful but exceptionally good for your mental wellbeing and health.

By using a neutral colour pallet on the walls and floor it is possible to add a calming effect with a picture,

furnishings LOCAL or shower EXPERT MEL panels COLLIER which all follow the horticultural trail. If the bathroom is big enough, we could also install a living plant wall for you to shower in front of so you get fully submersed in the whole experience (although, as yet, nobody has requested this!).

The key to really getting on board this trend is to really just work with the space you have got. Even a small bathroom can lend itself to a spider plant, whereas in a bigger space you can look at palms, cacti and even English Ivy. It has got to be said though if it was my choice, I’d be looking at air plants because I am not blessed with green fingers and in a humid environment like a bathroom, they will look after themselves!

Prices are also still rising across the board.

Currently, this is due to the cost to ship products around the world; a container that used to cost around $4k to bring to the UK is now costing $10k and so manufacturers are passing this cost down the line. I think it highly likely that prices will continue to rise for the next six to nine months. So if you require anything, now could be the time to buy.

I am delighted to announce that we have strengthened our Kitchen and Bathroom design team with the addition of Adam as a junior designer. He will be assisting Mel, our lead designer, so that we can make sure every customer is looked after properly and has a great experience with their home project. We design and supply kitchens, bathrooms, fitted wardrobes, media rooms and home offices and we can either project manage the whole job (to include small building works, plastering, electrics, plumbing, tiling and decorating) or we offer supply only for you to fit yourself.

Mooli, in case you’re puzzled, is a giant type of radish. Also known by its Japanese name daikon, which literally translates as ‘big root’, it is widely grown in east and south Asia. Although not a staple of British supermarkets or veg plots, you might encounter it in oriental food shops or fancy foodie outlets. If you have never seen one, it has leaves that resemble those of a turnip and a root rather like a giant carrot but with white skin and flesh. Well grown, a mooli can easily exceed 25cm in length and weigh up to half a kilo. When eaten raw, mooli is milder and less peppery than radish. When cooked, the flavour is probably closest to that of a turnip.

I grow mooli every year. In many respects, it’s far easier to grow than ‘normal’ radish. The key to success is starting it no earlier than the beginning of July. If you try it earlier, it’s highly likely, as with many

other oriental vegetables, to bolt: that is to produce a flower head at the expense of a root. In fact, because it’s very quick growing, mooli can be sown as late as early August and still produce a worthwhile crop. Roots started in July will be ready for eating by late September, earlier if you pull them small. Reasonably hardy roots can be left in the ground through the autumn and early winter and harvested fresh as required. Only when the hard frosts arrive is there a risk of damage.

Even then, it’s often only the root tops protruding from the soil that are affected.

Because mooli shouldn’t be started before July, it’s another of those late crops that can be slotted in after an earlier one has been cleared. For me, it usually follows early potatoes. Although some say it can be started in pots or trays and planted out, I always sow the seeds directly in the soil. I do this in rows about 30 centimetres apart spacing the large, easily sown, seeds every couple of centimetres.

Once the seedlings are

established, they’re thinned to about four or five centimetres to give the roots room to develop. There’s then little to do, not even much weeding, as the strong growing foliage soon meets across the rows smothering all competition.

If there are problems, these are likely to be, in rough order of potential damage, wood pigeons, cabbage white butterflies and cabbage root fly.

Although not their favourite, pigeons can strip the leaves so netting is advisable especially later in autumn. Like other radishes, mooli is a brassica (member of the cabbage family) and prone to being ravaged by large caterpillars or Cabbage White Butterfly. It’s also the brassica family connection that makes it prone to cabbage root fly. Tunnelling and brown lines and mushy areas in the root only visible at harvest are the telltale signs. The easiest way to combat all these menaces is to cover the entire crop. I use ‘environmesh’, similar to fleece but more durable. This is put on the moment mooli seed is sown and usually stays put until the last roots are lifted.

Mooli seed is easily obtainable. The variety I use is April Cross. Neptune and Mino are others available.

Poppleton Community Railway Nursery is holding its monthly plant sale on Saturday 3rd July from 10am - 4pm. There will be a good selection of bedding and vegetable plants, herbs, alpines, shrubs and perennials.

The plant nursery on Station Road in Poppleton is the last surviving railway nursery in Britain. Throughout history it provided food for workers during the second world war, before eventually being used to supply tubs and hanging

baskets to the East Coast Main Line, today it's a plant nursery run by volunteers.

Summer is here, and those irritating bugs are flying around once more, but which are our enemies? Well, none really. All flying bugs, including wasps, are part of our ecosystem and do vital work to ensure pollination and help with the maintenance of crops and plants. At the end of May, we see bumblebees in and around our homes, the females are looking for somewhere to nest whilst the males are flying around serving her. The bees are not a problem. If left alone, they will move on by the end of June. Honey bees are different and move around in a swarm until they find a safe place to settle. Once settled, they will make a comb and set up home. Honey bees can be picked up by beekeepers and rehomed in hives. This can be done through www.yorkbeekeepers.com.

include wood wasps, tree bees and hornets. The wasp is an excellent pollinator and also eats bugs like greenfly, proving very helpful to gardeners. However, as we all know, they can prove to be a pest to us! Wasps come out of hibernation mid-May from where they have usually bedded down in your loft, garage or shed. They will find a new area to populate and start to build their nest.

The nest grows in size over the summer months, starting from the size of an apple and can expand to the size of the habitat it is in. If you would like more information regarding any pest control, please find details of your local pest controllers in the index.

A local care home is pulling out all of the stops to lift residents’ spirits and raise funds for Dementia UK. New Lodge Care Home and Extra Care Apartments is hosting its first-ever ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ show for residents on July 9 and raising funds for Dementia UK at the same time. The care home is also encouraging Your Local Link readers to make their own donations to the same charity.

Care homes and extra care staff faced huge challenges during the lockdown. Keeping residents safe from Covid was only the start.

Less well known was their work to maintain the wellbeing of those who could no longer receive visits from friends and loved ones.

Staff at the New Lodge Care Home and Extra Care Apartments in New Earswick rose to the

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. THUMBS HEMMINGWAY After living in a house with 40+ other cats, Thumbs Hemingway is finding adjusting to adoption centre life quite difficult. For the first few days, he practically refused to look at anyone, hiding away and displaying all the behaviours of a very unhappy cat. After a trip to the vets, he seemed to find his voice and some confidence. While he still likes to have a grumble, he seems more settled even though it’s clear that he’s stressed. Thumbs will need a quiet home, with no other pets, where he can take the time to find his feet without being pressured.

We’re not sure how he will cope initially, but we think that a home environment will be easier for him to adjust to than the strange sights and smells of the adoption centre.

If you can give this lovely boy the time he needs to adjust and show his personality then you might be the perfect candidates to take him into your home and your heart.

This slightly worried looking chap is Jonathon Supersocks and he is finding his transition from home to the Adoption Centre a bit scary. This is hardly surprising as he was living in a multi-cat household where he was having to compete for space, food, attention and all the other essentials that a cat needs. Now he has come to a new place where everything smells and looks different and the poor lad is completely bewildered by it all! Having said all that he is slowly getting used to us and his new surroundings and taking baby (or kitten) steps we are convinced that he will eventually feel safe enough to appreciate all that a new home could offer him.

Jonathon will also need a calm pet free home to start the next chapter in his life.

There are two main types of cholesterol, LDL, sometimes termed ‘bad’ cholesterol, and HDL sometimes termed as good cholesterol. The reality is that we do need some of both types of cholesterol, but the incorrect balance can be harmful. When LDL cholesterol builds up in the arteries, it can contribute to plaque formation, whilst HDL cholesterol removes harmful cholesterol from the bloodstream. With this in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy cholesterol profile.

INCREASE FIBRE INTAKE Fibre, particularly the type found in porridge oats and whole grains, known as beta-glucan, helps to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

It’s not just the leaves of these plants that can be eaten, many have edible flowers too. Chive and lavender flowers are popular for using in salads and baking.

Being a member of the allium family, chives are a source of quercetin, a compound that works alongside vitamin C and can help manage hayfever symptoms.

Lavender is often used in nighttime tea blends for its relaxing properties. It combines well with lemon balm, another relaxing herb, used in herbal medicine to manage anxiety. Adding lemon balm and mint leaves to cool water is a great way to liven up regular drinking water and refresh you throughout the day.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH JAZZ™Apple, Orange and Turmeric Tonic

Literally a ray of sunshine in a glass!

Naturally sweet from the JAZZ™ apples and oranges and with the warm note of the fresh turmeric it is just the perfect summer drink that’s packed with goodness! Drink it with plenty of ice and a dash of sparkling water.

Ingredients: •2 JAZZ™ apples - core removed and cut into chunks •1 orange - peeled, seeds removed and chopped into pieces •1/2 lemon - seeds removed and peeled •A thumb size of ginger - peeled

•A small piece of fresh turmeric - peeled •Optional: you can serve this juice with a splash of sparkling water Method: If you have a juicer: Juice all the ingredients and serve with plenty of ice and some sparkling water if using.

If you don’t have a juicer: Place all the fruit into a blender, blend for few second until fairly smooth.

Strain the juice through a muslin cloth.

Both methods work perfectly well!

You can store the juice in an airtight jar or bottle for a few hours but it’s definitely best to drink straight away.
