YORK LIFE

Phwoar! July is a weird one, innit? Whereas June greets us with a warm and familiar embrace, like a kindly uncle or an older cousin you only see at weddings and funerals, July arrives with what we can only describe as a filthy wink and slap on the bum. July is that neighbour that lives alone who often gives you long, hungry looks, or a character played by a younger Sean Bean; all sweaty, hairy chest showing, uttering a hushed “Alright, love?” as you pass. Anyway, our point is that July is lustful

month, when hot sunshine and shocking rainfall play with our senses and get us all riled up. We think it is a rather exciting time of the year, and not just because of the weather – it’s also our birthday. This month Your Local Link is turning 15 years old, and like most 15 year olds SARAH

silliness, we’ve still managed to put together a stonking magazine, filled with everything you need to get you through the next month. Be sure to keep the bumper events section handy, as there’s some absolute corkers taking place this month. One we’re particularly looking forward to is York Maze, and mostly because we’ve got a bet on in the office about what the maze will be themed around this year. Odds on favourite is a 1000ft Judi Dench arm-wrestling (and beating) Nigel Farage, while second favourite is a maze in the shape of a maze; going for the self-referential, meta theme. Meta. Stay safe, try to control any weird July ‘urges’ you might feel, and enjoy!

in July, we’ll be hanging about around the shops throwing water bombs at passing cars. Lol! Actually it isn’t us who will be enjoying our birthday the most – it could be you. As well as creating a fun feature about 15 ways in which York is awesome, we’re also celebrating by giving away a £150 York voucher to one of you lucky so-andsos, to spend at the shop, or shops, of your choice. Flip to the competition page to find out more. And, apart from birthday joy and July

JOIN THE CLUB FANCY A RUN... TO RUSSIA? No, this is not a notice for a crazy endurance running club, but rather your chance to help a local team. Bishopthope White Rose Junior Football Club are hosting a ‘Run to the World Cup’ day of fun, 1st July. The players will run laps of the pitch to collectively reach 883 miles – the distance from London to Kaliningrad where the World Cup will be held. You can join in yourself, as well as enjoying the entertainment, food, and attractions, and all money raised from sponsorships will go toward the club’s plans for a playing field and community facility. n To find out more, jog over to www.bishopthorpewhiterose.com

FINDING SUPPORT If you, like many people, have lived with mental health issues and think there is no one to talk to, read on. A new peer support group could be the answer, as it is run by people with similar experiences offering friendly faces, great advice, and engaging chats. They are a Trauma Informed Peer Support Group, meaning they focus on strengths, resilience and self-healing that make sense of survival mechanisms, while promoting the development of coping strategies. The group meets at Briar House Wellbeing Centre, Merchantgate, from 4-6pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Anyone can just turn up and say hi, or to find out more, email yor.peeryork@gmail.com

GAME ON! The football season might have ended, but that doesn’t mean soccer-mad girls have to stop. Rawcliffe Girls Under 15s Football Club are searching for a couple of strong players to join their squad for the next season, to help the team go from strength to strength. They train every Thursday evening, and to be eligible you must have a passion for the game, be up for making some firm new friends, and be in either Year 9 or 10 from September. n If you’d like to know more, call Stuart Watson on 07581 252083.

POST HASTE If you proudly consider yourself a philatelist (stamp collector, apparently) and love nothing more than collecting, discussing and hunting for rare and interesting stamps, we have just the group for you. York Philatelic Society is not only on the lookout for new members, but also celebrating their 70th anniversary this year. They meet every second Thursday at The Priory Street Centre in Priory Street (just off Micklegate), and one and all with interest, or curiosity, about stamps are welcome to attend. As long as you don’t go postal. Sorry... If you get this time you could also attend their anniversary buffet on 26th June, from 7pm. As well as a feast, there will be quiz and a raffle taking place on the night, which will be attended by the Lord Mayor. n If you would like to go, or just to find out more about the society, call 411455.

YORK LIFE

and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

Think of ‘heritage’ – and what comes to mind? The Bar Convent’s Living Heritage Project? The Dig? Any one of York’s splendid museums? The Shambles? Boyes? Real pubs filled with real people drinking real ale? That big church in the centre of town, whose name escapes me? Well, you’re mistaken. Whatever those might be, they’re not heritage. Or, rather, they’re not Heritage. Heritage comes in flat-packs from B&Q; in lorries from Aberdeen distribution centres; in online holiday brochures. Fancy you not realising. So we evidently don’t live right in the middle of Heritage. However, there’s no need to worry, as we can buy it instead. Home improvements are a good place to start. Who needs a house with a blue plaque marking the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree, when they can buy a Richard Burbidge Heritage white oak handrail? Even better for those on a budget might be

14

the Modern Heritage white bookcase, a snip at £9.99 on Amazon. You could then have a bathroom overhaul, courtesy of Heritage Bathrooms. Their catalogue is every Heritage-lover’s dream. What about a Heritage lavatory brush, and matching loo roll holder? Would you feel more in touch with your Roman (or Viking) ancestors if you were in possession of a Heritage Oyster loo seat with gold hinges? If so, you’d better follow the catalogue’s advice and ‘contact your local heritage stockist’. This kind of heritage, for the record, is supplied by warehouses in well-known heritagespots such as Stirling, Stoke, Bristol

and Reading (well, they do call it ‘contemporary heritage’). There is also, excitingly, a heritage plastic bath plant in Yorkshire, which could be worth a day trip. Once you’ve sorted out your bathroom

heritage, you’ll need all the trimmings to go with it. Fired Earth Tuscan tiles, perhaps (‘historic and fertile’, apparently)? Or Heritage Brass door handles? And don’t forget the Dulux heritage paint range (not only ‘hand picked’, but ‘expertly curated’).

The Heritage-pink Oak-limed Mirror Doors that I saw recently in a shop that had better remain nameless would go with it a treat: they’re a lovely pink plastic with painted-on wood effect. And who needs Scrabble, when you could have great games sliding the doors along Heritage track sets? If this sounds a bit too Changing Rooms, you might feel in need of a break. A spot of shopping is never a bad idea – and the place to go if you want high-street Heritage is Crew Clothing, a relatively new addition to Low Petergate. Here, you can buy a Women’s Heritage Cable V Neck Jumper in Sunset Pink, to go with their Heritage Scarf. And don’t worry, chaps: there’s a Heritage Patch Rugby Shirt for you. Barbour, not surprisingly, are in on the Heritage act too. But if Barbour and

YORK LIFE

Crew are a bit pricey and the gypsycum-peasant look is your thing, there’s always the Falmer Heritage range at Matalan. You may feel that your own wardrobe is already so full of old clothes that it could already qualify for inclusion on the National Heritage List. In that case, you could instead treat yourself to a holiday. Visit any interesting place, and the old shops and tea-rooms will have metamorphosed into Heritage Centres where you can buy Heritage Guides, Heritage Haggis, Heritage Cornish Clotted Cream, and Heritage Fudge, and Heritage Sporrans (£195 for Tooled Celtic Pigskin. I need one now). On the way back to your Heritage Hotel, you could stop off at Old Ma Riley’s Irish Heritage pub, founded by a London chain way back in 1993. There you could have a nice pint of two of Heritage Ale (brewed last week in Warrington) in the Family Room, watching assorted children fighting over fish fingers and smearing tomato ketchup over the plastic tablecloths. Is real heritage dead? Has it just been re-branded, had the dirt scrubbed out from under its nails in order to appeal to Harry Potter obesessed tourists who don’t want to get dirt on their Barbour jackets? Is there still a genuine heritage underworld? Or does the obsession with the Heritage Industry mean that the real thing died years ago? I shall ponder on this next time I’m scoffing a Heritage Cheddar sandwich…

definitely keep your straighteners hidden away in a top secret location to avoid further incidents! I reckon it’s worth mentioning that a second pair of hair straighteners would be a fabulous gift for your mum (and everyone in this situation) in future. Good luck!

DADDY ISSUES

THE BORROWER Dear Daphne, My mum keeps on ‘borrowing’ my stuff without asking and not putting it back where it came from. Most of the time it’s my hair straighteners and hair products - whenever I go to use them, they’re tucked away in her bedroom. I just wish she would

ask, or at least tell me when she’s using stuff, it makes me really angry even though it doesn’t seem like a big deal to her. I don’t think you’re really upset about the fact that your mum is borrowing you stuff. It’s more a case of her respecting your boundaries and privacy. As you get older, you come to appreciate your own space and things. For your mum to go into your bedroom and take those things without asking you, kind of feels like an invasion. So I can totally see why you’re getting annoyed! It sounds like mum already knows this behaviour is annoying you, but it hasn’t stopped her. Desperate times call for desperate measures: until your mum takes the time to ask you first, you should

Dear Daphne, My teenage son and I aren’t getting on very well at all. I think it’s because I left his mum 3 years ago and he’s still mad about it. I only hear from him if he needs a lift to a party or wants to borrow money - when I do everything he asks, he’s still indifferent towards me. Other times he avoids me for weeks. His mum wants me to play a larger role in his upbringing but trying to spend time with him is like getting blood out of a stone, he often turns down my invites. His older sister still takes the time out to see me and doesn’t seem to have been as hard hit by the break up. How can I get through to him that I still care and want to be a part of his life as more than just a taxi and lender? I can imagine that this feels very personal and hurtful to you, but try to remember that he is a teenage boy. At this stage of his life hanging out with dad isn’t a ‘cool’ activity. None the less you should gently persist, if he is still upset about the break up, it will do him a

world of good to know that you aren’t giving up on trying to see him. It sounds like you still have a functioning parenting relationship with his mum, perhaps she could shed some light on the situation and help you get your relationship back on track? As a teenager I wasn’t fond of either of my parents, but I’m happy to report it’s something I grew out of. Try and remember how you felt back then. Have you told your son that would like to spend more quality time with him and you’ve noticed he’s been a little distant with you, opening up the opportunity for him to tell you how he feels could help you patch things up.

HERE ARE A FEW FA M O U S FAC E S YO U S H A R E YO U R S I G N W I T H. . .

21ST JUNE 22ND JULY L to R: Angela Merkel, Ariana Grande, Elon Musk & Julius Caesar

Looks like you’re going to be very busy throughout the whole of the month, especially if you’re self employed. Cash aspects are very encouraging, and on more than one occasion you will be speculating to accumulate. New work contracts are under review, and important documents will be signed between the 18th and 22nd. Some Cancerians will be dipping their toes in the property market, while others in the 55+ age group will be thinking about retirement pots and pension plans.

There are a number of purely emotional issues which will remain unresolved, but this is not the best of times to tackle this kind of problem. Much more is achieved if you concentrate on all things practical and pragmatic. In old gypsy parlance, listen to your head and don’t get sidetracked by following your heart. At least, not right now, anyway. Having said that, there is a lot of support and encouragement from an unexpected romantic source.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

and there are some financial gains to be made between the 20th and 27th. Travel aspects are a bit low key, so check all tickets and schedules, especially if you’re flying..

Being impulsive can sometimes be a mistake, but at this point in time a little impulsiveness should serve you well, especially in relationships and affairs of the heart. Be open with your thoughts and feelings, and rather than rebuttal, you will find a very positive response. Jobs and careers are important, but do not undervalue your leisure and pleasure time.

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22NF SEPT A long and forensic look at your finances might be a good idea at this

time, especially if you are striving towards specific targets and goals. You may have to rob Peter to pay Paul, but some financial flexibility may be called for during July if you are to get whatever it is you want. Romantic associations have some very bright vibrations from the 23rd onwards.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT A highly charged month for the establishment of new relationships and all affairs of the heart, especially for females in the 20 to 35 age group. Everyone else chugs along quite nicely,

SCORPIO23RD OCT - 21ST NOV You’ll be feeling much more secure in yourself, and as July progresses, you’ll find that you are in the position of having to call the shots. Most other people will respond positively, but if there is some opposition, it can be easily overcome by ignoring your critics and having faith in your own judgement

and ideas. Some tensions of jealousy from a close female.

SAGITTARIUS22ND NOV-21ST DEC There is a sense of having to accept new situations and realities in certain family matters, which is fair enough, but the process reminds you of all the things you have not yet done with your life, and for some older members of the sign, it points a finger at the passing of the years. You will be called upon to sort someone else’s problems out, but not the person you think it might be.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

If someone asks for your opinion, you must give it openly and honestly, but please make sure your criticisms are constructive. It is hard to see other peoples’ points of view when they are diametrically opposed to your own, but no two people are alike, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If someone presents you with a gift, it might not be what you want.

The first ten days of the month looks like being a busy period with family reunions and special days out: the 5th 6th and 7th are important dates for cementing new friendships and relationships. From the 10th onwards there is a mild feeling of anti-climax, and you need to create new targets and new dates to look forward to.

AQUARIUS20TH JAN - 18TH FEB

Strong travel aspects during the first week, maybe with a whisp of nostalgia if you’re going back to somewhere that has had an important role to play in your past. Family reunions bode well, and there is a new sense of urgency and excitement making its presence felt on the job scene from the 23rd or 24th through till the end of the month – and beyond!

If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from someone special, it’s probably because they haven’t heard from you! Time to take the initiative and send out a few texts and emails. A complex period on the work scene with no clear sense of direction; some necessary changes to job routines coming into play between the 18th and 24th.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR Younger members of the sign, teens and 20s, will be preoccupied by romantic excitement and sexual tension. There is a sense of freedom and hedonism, which is not just restricted to the young. All Piscesians can taste this energy, with varying results. A gentle word of warning here to older guys… Gentlemen, don’t make fools of yourself with younger women.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN This should be a relatively trouble free month, and a period wherein you’ll recognise a subtle shift in the pattern of your luck. A lot of the restrictions which have held you back throughout the first half of the year are now being overcome, and the pace of life is destined to become noticeably faster and a whole lot brighter. New health regimes pay dividends.

YORK LIFE

This month we celebrate our 15th birthday. Yes, a copy of Your Local Link has been dropping onto your doormat every month for the past 15 years. But, York is awesome. instead of bigging up ourselves, let's big up York with a look at 15 reasons why

1, IT SMELLS LIKE CHOCOLATE It might have smelt a lot more chocolatey in the past, especially in Southbank while Terry's still worked, but even today the waft of choccy from the Nestle factory can be a delight.

3, GUY FAWKES It might have ended badly for this particular son of York, but thanks to Guido and his troublesome pals the whole of the UK has something exciting to do in early November – otherwise a pretty bland time of year.

4, YORK MAZE What other cities can brag about having the UK's largest maize maze? None. Also last year, thanks to the Maze, we had the world's largest bit of Star Wars fan art: the biggest Death Star since... the real Death Star (long time ago, galaxy far, far away). 2, SODDING THE FLOODS We're a tough lot. Despite the rivers Ouse and Foss occasionally flooding, often with hugely damaging effects, we still soldier on, with pubs calling water up to their knees a mere “puddle”.

Like us on

20

5, WE'RE ON TELLY No, we don't mean that York is used as filming locations throughout the year (which it bloody well is), we mean York crops up all the time in historical dramas like Vikings and The Last Kingdom; stuff set hundreds of years ago. Coz we're well old.

Come & visit our showroom

6, JOHN SNOW (knew quite a lot) York was responsible for you being alive by saving the lives of your ancestors. Don't believe us? Read this month's Time Travel article to learn about John Snow (not the one from Game of Thrones), the father of disease fighting.

9, OUR OLD STUFF IS BETTER THAN THEIRS Been to other cities and wandered around their museums filled with stuff that is a couple hundred of years old? Cute. We're just gonna chill out in the Museum Gardens and lean against this still in-situ Roman corner tower. Cool?

7, BIGGEST. CHURCH. EVER

10, DECLARING WALL

York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps (and all the ones south of the Alps are rubbish). Liverpool cathedral is technically larger, but it was built in the 20th century and is, quite frankly, rather garish.

Speaking of walls, we kept ours. While other towns and cities knocked their medieval defensive walls down to make way for awful factories and, later, car parks and shopping centres, we fought to keep ours up. Well worth it. 11, WE CREATED NEW YORK When the early New World colonists were establishing New York (after scamming some indigenous people to pinch the land) they knew they'd have to give it a pretty great name to ensure it prospered and grew. And so, 'New' York. Makes sense.

8, THE PURPLE MAN Our street performers do more than just pose for photos. A few years back, Purple Man, the bloke who calls Stonegate his home (can't think of another way to describe him...?) took off for Syria of all places to deliver a toys to refugee children. Nice.

YORK LIFE

12, JUDI DENCH KICKS ASS The only woman to have frightened James Bond, York's Judi Dench is a national treasure, whose name, when trending on Twitter, makes everyone desperately click, uttering 'DON'T BE DEAD! PLEASE DON'T BE DEAD!'

13, WE ANNOYED THE NORMANS

When the Normans invaded in1066 and started to march north, acting very much like they owned the place, we caused them some bother. Our ancestors were so troublesome to the Normans that they built not one, but two, castles here, then promptly... well... sorta slaughtered most of us. Still, pride!

14, OUR WEIRD LAWS You might have heard about the one about shooting Scots from the walls on a Sunday with a crossbow, but did you also know it's illegal to give a German correct directions (in case they are a Nazi spy), and wellies can't be worn on Easter Sunday, regardless of the weather.*

Thanks..

From all at Your Local Link, we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone in York who has ever picked us up, flicked through, hired one of our advertisers, been to an event we promoted, or entered a competition we ran. Here's to the next 15!

15, OUR PIRATE ARCHBISHOP We're not implying that John Sentamu spent some time in the Indian Ocean attacking cruise ships, but rather that his predecessor in the role of Archbishop of York, Lancelot Blackburne, was, prior to him taking holy orders, a buccaneer. He carried out nefarious and secret acts for the King, so we assume that when that guy passed the collection plate, you damn well dropped some money in! *Well, the crossbow thing is true

Speaking of Competitions... To thank all our readers, we're giving away a £150 voucher to spend at any York business. To enter, flip to our competition page at the front of the mag. Eek!

nuts for your titles!

Wish Your Local Link a Happy 13th Birthday We are here to help you in all aspects of the following:

TREASURE HUNT

1.

We start by the main entrance off, appropriately, Cemetery Road. Head to the immediate right, passing the toilet block. As you walk, check out the headstones. • In which year did John Usher die? • What couple invites us to “So sing as well”?

2.

TREASURE HUNT

For this month's Treasure Hunt we're taking a wander around one of the city's hidden gems. York Cemetery has been the final resting place for many of us since 1837 and

3.

Just after the first left turn, cross the grassy area diagonally, heading for a worn path along some trees. Keep an eye out for a gravestone with 15015 on the back (the side facing you). This marks the cemetery’s first ever burial, but... • Where was the occupant from?

Turn around and continue along the grass, heading toward the chapel. You’ll arrive back at the path to the side of the chapel, by a small headstone for Harold Robson. Walk along the path, heading for the front of the chapel. • Who was born 19-11-28? • Why is Charles Robinson’s grave different?

5.

6.

7.

Turn right, following the curved path. • Whose head stone looks like an object featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey?

4.

Now at the front of the chapel, which is often used for events, find out... • Whose remains are interred in Vault No.6 “beneath this portico”?

Turn around and walk along the long path heading directly away from the chapel. • Who was Benjamin Gray’s wife?

At the compass, turn right (or east, as it points) • Who died “after a few days illness” in 1877?

remains an oasis of both calm and nature. If you've never visited, this is great chance to see it. Plus, if you love reading old headstones, you're in luck...

Turn to the right, onto the path heading toward the short steps, and go up them. • A grand statue guards Solly’s wife. What was her name?

Keep moving forwards, heading toward a small group of stone angels. • One such heavenly being believes who to be “worthy of everlasting love”?

Travel Review

The Four Seasons Hotel, St. Fillians, Perthshire, Scotland.

For stunning views, delicious food and a bonus option of bringing your pooch, The Four Seasons on Loch Earn is the place to go.

Where is it? Nestled away in the Scottish Highlands near Perth, The Four Seasons Hotel is just an hour drive north of Glasgow (a four and a half hour drive from York), and it’s a beautiful drive. Winding roads looking over the green countryside lead you down to Loch Earn, where the hotel sits on the very edge, with breathtaking views. There’s a tranquil vibe at the hotel when we arrive in the afternoon, despite it being pet friendly, all of the pups running around are quiet and well behaved. A couple pull out their two terriers complete with matching life jackets for swimming in the loch later - cute!

What’s it like? The staff across the hotel are chatty and informative, from the receptionist, to the waiters and bar staff.

A traditional decor prevails throughout, with hints of art deco in the restaurant, the room is clean, tidy and there’s traditional shortbread awaiting us when we arrive. The view out of the bedroom window is impressive, undisrupted views of Loch Earn, and later, I get to watch the sun set over the loch from the comfort of the bedroom. As well as the hotel rooms with a view, guests can choose to book a stay in one of the six hillside log cabins.

Food & Drink I head down to the AA Rosette restaurant, which is one of the few places where no dogs are allowed. The Meall Reamhar, produces high quality dishes composed of local Scottish ingredients. The carefully thought out dishes are a clever blend of complimentary flavours.

Between myself and my guest, over a three course meal, we establish that the high quality of food is consistent. Opting for the Seared West Coast Scallops doesn’t disappoint. Cooked perfectly, they sit on a bed of pearl barley, brown shrimp, saffron and smoked haddock veloute. For mains, I choose the Confit leg of Gressingham Duck, complimentary flavours come through including vanilla and shallots. Dessert is a show stopper - gin, raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake! Just as delightful as it sounds, no need for debate.

Actvities on offer When staying at The Four Seasons there’s plenty to do. St Fillians is a champion for outdoor sports in Scotland, There’s the Comrie Croft

mountain bike centre, Loch Earn Water Sports, Fishing, and golf to name a few of the activities on the doorstep. Fans of the Beatles will be pleased to know that they once stayed at The Four Seasons after a gig in Edinburgh, while Harry Potter fans will enjoy the Hogwarts-esque library.

Who would love it? The ideal candidate for The Four Seasons Hotel is a pet loving foodie. It’s worth mentioning that there is a completely pet-free section of the hotel too, for those who don’t have a doggy to bring with them, but can still appreciate decent food and a comfortable stay in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

I’m calling it now: Danny and Jack for the winners, Hayley is testament to the fact that no matter how beautiful you are on the outside, it holds no weight if you’re a knob on the inside and I think we can all agree that Adam is a massive snake.

There’s something liberating about knowing that you will be in a field for three days with little else but warm beer, live music and burgers to get you through. Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: JOHN SNOW Let's be very clear here; this month's article is not about the life of 'The King in The North' Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. No, here we examine a Dr John Snow, son of York and widely regarded as the father of epidemiology – the study of how diseases spread. If you've never heard of him, take a wander through the gardens along North Street and you'll find a memorial to him in the form of a water pump missing its handle. Here's why. For a guy who went on to become one of the most respected medical minds of the Victorian era, and a favourite of Queen Victoria herself, no less, John Snow was born in poverty. Born in the slums of North Street in 1813, when the street was one of the poorest parts of the city, Snow was the son of a labourer who toiled each day in the nearby coal yard. As well as being dangerous and

overcrowded, North Street was also riddled with disease from the frequently flooding River Ouse; then polluted by run-off from markets and, appallingly, graveyards further up river. For a chap who would later study disease, this was a baptism of fire.

ESCAPE Fortunately relief came when John was 14. As he demonstrated a keen mind, especially where maths was concerned, he managed to win an apprenticeship with Newcastle surgeon William Hardcastle, and so left York for good. We know – normally these articles linger in York for the duration, but stick with us, it's worth it.

miasma theory was dominant, which meant that people believed that illnesses were spread by pollution and bad odours. The plague was attributed to this, as were sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia (that's the story they were sticking, too, anyway...). Even as a youngster John struggled to believe this, as there was no evidence of exactly how the diseases were transmitted by the air.

CLEAN LIVING

While an apprentice, John experienced a cholera epidemic in the village of Killingworth, just outside Newcastle, and treated the victims. Back then the

Interestingly, as he was an apprentice, he was forbidden to drink alcohol. This stayed with him when he moved to London in 1836 and he joined the abstinence movement. He was also a vegetarian, and would drink only distilled water which he considered to be 'pure'. That would come in handy while living in London.

John Snow's work, particularly in plotting the location of infected people, laid the foundations of our modern understanding of the spread of diseases.

After graduating from the University of London in 1844, and after being admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons, Snow became a founding member of the

Epidemiology Society of London, which was formed as a response to a devastating outbreak of cholera. The group's aim was to work out how and why diseases spread so quickly throughout certain areas of the city. Snow received much attention during a particularly bad outbreak in Soho in 1854. Using research and statistics of where the worst effected residents lived, John was able to track the source of the disease to the Broad Street water pump. He, along with his colleagues, realised that contamination in the water was making

people ill, not polluted air. Presenting his findings to the local authority, the decision was made to remove the handle from the pump to stop people drawing water from it. Although Snow himself admits that the outbreak was already in retreat before this happened, the number of infections drastically reduced. His findings proved that not only was that particular pump the epicentre of the outbreak, but also that the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company had been drawing water to it from a heavily polluted section of the River Thames. The incident was a major breakthrough in the importance of public health.

NUMB QUEEN John Snow's work, particularly in plotting the location of infected people, laid the foundations of our modern understanding of the spread of diseases, as well dispelling the medieval belief that a bad smell can

As well as saving countless lives in the following 200 years, John was also a pioneer in the field of anaesthetic. He researched the use of ether and chloroform as an anaesthetic, so that patients could undergo live-saving surgery and procedures without pain and distress. He designed tools and masks that would allow him to administer the gasses, and he famously attended the birth of two of Queen Victoria's children. Snow was present at the births of both Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice, administering chloroform to the Queen during labour to help with the pain, despite the complaints of the Church of England who believed the practice was ungodly. Those guys. Unfortunately this incredible career, which has made such a difference to all of our lives today, was tragically cut short. On 10th June, 1856, at the aged of just 45, John suffered a stroke and died six days later. He was buried at Brompton Cemetery, and his grand headstone can still be viewed today. However, for a more local monument, head over to North Street to see the handle-less pump which pays homage to one of our most significant, but oft overlooked, ancestors. Keep 'em coming, York.

SPORTREPORT

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

It's amazing how quickly those four years to the World Cup come around, and here we are again hoping England can somehow replicate 1966 in Russia this summer. Though let’s face it, had VAR been around back then Geoff Hurst’s second goal would have been disallowed! The greatest football tournament has brought back memories of the first World Cup I watched in 1994. Obviously, not involving England as we didn’t qualify, but I vividly remember my Dad waking me up in the early hours, so I could watch Romania Vs Columbia (something I would remain asleep for now), Bebeto’s baby celebration for Brazil, Ireland’s shock win over Italy and my personal favourite, Diana Ross’ penalty at the opening ceremony. Four years

“FOUR YEARS LATER MY DAD ENSURED I COULD WATCH ENGLAND’S OPENER VS TUNISIA DUE TO A TIMELY DENTIST APPOINTMENT.”

32

with Dan Tait

later my Dad ensured I could watch England’s opener vs Tunisia due to a timely dentist appointment (something I would also rather have now) and ironically that’s who England face in their tournament opener in 2018. Aside from penalty shootouts, player burnouts after a long season, and various other excuses many people think the England players struggle to entertain themselves and suffer from boredom which contributes somehow on the pitch. To counter this, apparently, they are relying on playing card game Uno and watching Love Island. I think I would rather eat a pack of Uno cards. I guess it must be tricky for them at the £22,000 a night resort where they are staying

REGRETS

Of course, a few players in the England camp are Liverpool players still getting over their Champions League Final defeat to Real Madrid where the game pretty much swung the way of the holders when Liverpool’s star player Mohammed Salah was crocked by the seemingly innocent Sergio Ramos. I saw a tweet that said, “I am not saying Ramos is the sort of player who intentionally meant to injure Salah, but he would probably unplug a life support machine if his phone needed charging.” They could have just pointed to the fact he has 24 red cards in his Real Madrid career to make the point he isn’t a shrinking violet. To be fair it wasn’t just that moment but also Liverpool goalkeeper Loric Karius letting in two of the softest goals ever in the competition, which led to some people immorally commenting that it was the worst use of gloves since OJ Simpson.

MEANWHILE...

Onto football news closer to home and York City have quietly

gone about their transfer business in preparation for a second successive season in the National League North. The scouting network still appears to only consist of former players or those who come from the North East but the likes of ex loan signing Jake Wright who ripped through our defence a few months back as part of promotion winners Harrogate Town’s 2-0 win at Bootham Crescent, you would hope he would make us a stronger attacking outfit. Wright has filled the gap left by Louis Almond who has left to join Chorley; a decision some are saying is nuts. July sees a packed pre-season schedule for the Minstermen. Usually I find the close season more of a drag than receiving an email with the subject GDPR, but with the likes of Leeds United and Barnsley coming to Bootham Crescent perhaps the big crowds for friendlies will prove to be a good omen.

Local sports teams fundraising and promoting is a common theme up and down the country, but Richard Mann, 38, of Bishopthorpe is attempting to go that ‘extra mile’; well 110 miles to be precise. Richard aims to complete the Hardmoors 110 Ultramarathon to raise money for Bishopthorpe White Rose Junior Football Club. Richard Mann is the coach for the Under 8’s team and has set up a BT Donate page (https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ hardmoors110) with all proceeds going towards the football club’s future community facility and pitches. The club has so far raised £45,000 of its £80,000 fundraising target; the total required to break ground on the project and Richard has reached £361 of his £500 personal target. The Club has recently outgrown available facilities in Bishopthorpe as it currently plays across five different sites and does not have a home ground, clubhouse or focal point in the community.

What better way to demonstrate this than to take on the Hardmoors 110 and choose the football club to benefit from the sponsorship generously donated towards my endeavour.’ The Hardmoors 110 covers 110 miles offroad from Filey to Helmsley with 6000 metres of elevation gain and a time limit of 36 hours. To put that into context, Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK is 1,345 metres and Mount Everest is 8,848 metres.

NAY WIRES ON THAT, PET

Electric cars certainly sound like a great idea, especially if you leave them plugged-in and charging overnight. But... what happens if you forget to plug it in and you’ve got to drive to Sheffield first thing in the morning? FIRST WORLD PROBLEM. Well, thanks to a new innovation by BMW, you’ll never again forget to plug in your electric car. The BMW Wireless Charging System consists of a ground pad and a receiver on the underside of the car. You drive over the pad and charging starts immediately, wirelessly (just like you can with certain models of smartphone). Currently only available for their 530e iPerformance hybrid car, the system is a nice indicator of the shape of things to come. Right, off to Sheffield! For some reason...

TAX REFUND? Did you hang on to your final tax disk? Although the UK has been using the online system of car tax registry since 2014, tax disks are still in high demand, but now with collectors rather

than motorists. Although very old disks, some dating back to the first year of mandatory car tax in 1921, can sell for thousands, recent disks from this this past decade can still be of interest. Recently a set of 12 from 2015 sold for £500 on eBay; purchased by one of a growing group of enthusiasts called velologists (‘vel’ from Vehicle Excise License). So... did you keep it? If so, drinks might very soon be on you.

IN OTHER, NOT AT ALL SURPRISING, NEWS... Which kind of driver is the worst at breaking the speed limit? If you’re thinking it has to be some young boy racer, just months after passing his test,

you’re wrong. In a study of 6000 drivers across the UK, aged from 17-80, the group most likely to speed was Audi drivers aged 41-60. The data was collected from telematics firm smartdriveclub who also revealed that the group second most likely to to speed was the over 65s. In fact, young drivers, aged 17-25, ranked third overall. To be honest, it isn’t all that surprising to hear that middle-aged Audi drivers are reckless – we’ve all shouted profanities at an Audi TT at one point.

We hear from Mel Collier of JDL… So… you may think of a bathroom as a white bath (or shower tray), white basin, white toilet and chrome accessories – but this is not how it needs to be. Many of our customers want their bathrooms to be individual and to reflect their personalities and there are a few ways this can be achieved. I have spoken previously of choosing tiles which are a little different, but why stop there? We have just finished a beautiful ensuite for one of our clients which was completely based around one item – a wash bowl picked up from Spain. The bowl was handmade and hand glazed in black and white and once we got around the logistics of the waste outlet (mainland European wastes are different to ours, so we need to be careful) we spoke at length with the client as to how we could mount it to show off its full potential.

SINKING FEELING Because this particular customer is a fan of colour, and in particular the colour orange, we made a shelf and tiled it with orange mosaic style tiles and placed the bowl upon it. This combined with a wall mounted tap added the splash of colour and class the bathroom needed. What I am trying to say, is don’t be afraid to be yourself. If you have seen something that you like, ask if it can be incorporated into your bathroom – if it can be done, we’ll do it for you!

Asking a neighbour is what many people will do and this can work well if next door have a pond and they know what to do. However, often well-meaning neighbours will overfeed the fish out of kindness. A sudden, big increase in the amount of food that goes into the pond and can lead to fish illness or even deaths.

More News... With evermore open spaces being lost to developments of one sort or another, along with the documented decline of butterflies and wildlife species in general, we the gardeners, should step in to help. Even if you only have a limited space, there are lots of ways in which you can encourage wildlife to your garden. Obviously we find all flowers attractive; however, from the butterfly’s point of view some are more beneficial than others. The one plant we all know of course, the ‘Butterfly Bush’, is Buddleia davidii, a tall flowering deciduous shrub with honey scented cone shaped spikes. More well known favourites for butterflies are Lilac, Syringa vulgaris, again a sweetly scented, large flowering shrub. Hebe is a genus of plants with lots of different varieties to choose from, also Lavender, both English and French types can be seen laden with bees and butterflies when in flower. Lonicera (Honeysuckle) is a very sweetly scented climber with nectar rich flowers that rank high on the list of butterfly attractants.

LOVE THAT NECTAR A lot of flowers that would come under the bracket of ‘cottage garden’ plants are perfect for attracting nectar loving insects; other favourites of the butterfly are Violets, Antirrhinums,

Asters, and Sedum varieties. When these are planted in warm sunny sites the scents will be heightened. An ideal way of attracting things into your garden is by giving them the habitat that they require. For some wildlife that means exactly what it says, your garden should be wild. Piles of old logs and branches make perfect hide outs for all sorts of creatures, although some of them won’t be beneficial to all your plants, they will be a good meal for somebody else, for example birds will eat slugs and snails. You may have to change your attitude to caterpillars and how to get rid of them, as several of these may turn into butterflies, so try not to spray everything with chemicals. As well as providing food for wildlife you could try and encourage them to stay by providing both shelter and roosting sites. Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’, (Twisted Hazel), is a perfect plant for small birds. The tangle of branches allows small birds to dart inside for cover from larger predatory birds, or cats, whilst providing a food source when covered in catkins. Another shelter providing shrub is Pyracantha, (Firethorn) with thorny branches, sweet scented flowers and winter berries.

DEFENCE Having wildlife in your garden that feeds on the plant eating insects and molluscs can only be a good thing. Hedgehogs love slugs and to encourage them in the first instance you could provide a hedgehog house and sprinkle hedgehog niblets around it. Having a pond in your garden also attracts wildlife, whether it is a large pool full of fish or little more than a constant puddle to keep the frogs happy, it all plays a part. Frog and toad houses are available to give them some extra protection. Frogs are another creature that will eat slugs and snails and are, therefore, well worth encouraging. Having a selection of pond plants will also encourage many more aquatic species. There are booklets produced on all the different species that you may be able to attract, showing you what they look like, what they are called, identification tips and where they live. These booklets look at butterflies, insects, bugs, frogs, bats hedgehogs and birds and many others. As you can see there are lots of ways that you can help out nature and also make your garden that little bit more exciting.

A BLOOMin'

grand day out Poppleton Community Railway Nursery is taking part in the new BLOOM! Festival in July, with special openings to support the event. On 5th and 6th you can pay them a visit for plant sales from 10am-4pm, while on the evening of the 5th a Railway Running event is planned (check the site for ticket info). Then, on 7th July, the BLOOM! Festival Open Day at the nursery welcomes one and all to buy seasonal and hardy plants, and browse through the bric-a-brac, book, and Inspire craft group stalls. GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

I have recently moved house and the garden's soil is mostly clay. Could you give me some advice on gardening on clay and recommend some plants, please? The new gardener often views a heavy clay soil with despair because it is poor to warm in spring, poorly drained, and back-breaking to dig. It is also prone to compaction when walked on. Impossibly sticky when wet, and as hard as brick when dry, once improved by careful digging and the use of soil additives, clay can prove the most fertile of soils. Clay benefits from a remarkable ability to retain nutrients and water, so it is rich in the ingredients needed for good plant growth. Clay soils can be improved by a variety of techniques. First, it can be dug over in autumn, with fresh-turned clods left to be broken down by the frosts over winter. Avoid undoing all your good work by treading on and compacting the soil. Delay planting until spring when the soil will crumble easily with frost mould. At this point dig in coarse grit, well rotted

manure, mushroom compost, or leaf mould.

Plants that work well in clay soils are... • Acer palmatum 'bloodgood'. A fine specimen, ideal for a small garden. • Betula utilis jacquemontii. Good for larger gardens, this birch has beautiful white stems when it matures. • Magnolia 'soulangeana'. The huge, goblet-shaped pink, violet, or white flowers that are treasured on this shrubby tree. • Meilia. The gracefully-arching, zig-zagging branches on this shrub bear clusters of bell-shaped, rose-pink flowers. • Spirea 'goldflame'. A low but widespreading shrub that has beautiful gold foliage in spring followed by pink flowers. • Weigela 'florida variegata'. Has whitemargined leaves and clusters of funnelshaped light pink flowers.

Perennials that are very good on clay soils include... • Aster novi-belgii 'Jenny'. This Michaelmas daisy is grown for its sprays of daisy-like, red-purple and yellow flowers which flower from late summer

SPECIALIST GREENHOUSE INSTALLER

to mid autumn. • Astilbe 'fanal'. Has long lived, deep crimson flowers that rise above the mass of finely divided bright green leaves. • Astrantia major sunningdale variegated. Has creamy margined leaves and pink flowers. • Geranium 'Rozanne'. The summerlong display of this geranium makes it one of the best plants to have in your garden. • Helenium 'moerheim beauty'. This robust and upright perennial bears a succession of rich coppery red with dark brown centres. • Monarda 'Beauty of Cobham'. Has pale pink flowers and is very attractive to bees.

Q.

Last year my tomatoes suffered from a brown ring on the end of their fruits. Can you give me some advice on how to stop this happening, please? The problem you have is blossom end rot. Caused by adverse growing conditions, blossom end rot shows as

a brown ring or patch on the end of tomatoes. As the patch increases in size it makes a sunken appearance. Blossom end rot is caused by a lack of calcium in the fruit. Calcium deficiency reduces cell membrane permeability and this leads to swelling of the cells followed by leakage and destruction of the membrane structure. New cells can't form so this causes the dark sunken areas. It's rare for grow bags or potting compost to lack calcium, and there is almost always plenty in the soil. However, for calcium to reach the parts of the plant that are furthest from the roots there needs to be good flow of water through the plant. The fruits are distant from the roots and do not compete as well as the leaves for calcium. There is nothing you can do to save fruits once they have blossom end rot, but you can prevent it from happening again by keeping the growing media consistently moist throughout the growing season. During hot periods the plant may need watering twice a day. Very high air humidity can also limit water uptake, so good daytime ventilation of greenhouses is helpful.

Best of luck!

WELCOME AND UNWELCOME SUMMER VISITORS

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.

Let’s start with the welcome summer visitors. I’ll be opening my one acre fruit, veg and flower garden for charity again this year as part of the National Garden Scheme. Dates are Sunday 8th July 1-5pm and Wednesday 11th July 2-7pm. Everyone is very welcome. Admission is £3, and accompanied children are free. Refreshments, including homemade cake, are available. The address is 15 Knapton Lane, Acomb, YO26 5PX. Further information can be found through the National Garden Scheme website at www.ngs.org.uk/find-agarden/garden/20317 As for the unwelcome summer visitors, there are several pesky insects I’ve particularly in mind. Unfortunately, some of these show up almost every year. Here are three that normally appear on my plot around midsummer. All are commonplace and well worth keeping an eye out for:

BLACKFLY If you grow broad beans you’ve probably been troubled by blackfly. These tiny, dark black, aphids initially cluster on the growing tips. As numbers increase so the aphids move down the stem, sometimes infesting entire plants and crippling

the crop. To prevent, inspect beans regularly and squash any aphids congregating on plant tips. A less messy alternative for plants that have obtained a good height and started to set beans is to pinch out the growing tip. This reduces the chances of blackfly finding a succulent starting point. Blackfly mainly bother broad beans, but they can affect other crops such as runner beans and beetroot.

SAWFLY Sawflies often visit my gooseberry bushes laying eggs on the foliage. It’s the caterpillar-like larvae that hatch out and feed on the leaves that actually cause the damage. These can build up unnoticed so that bushes are sometimes completely defoliated before the culprits are spotted. The larvae are about 20mm long, green or yellow and with black heads and body markings. I regularly check bushes in June and July. If colonies of sawfly larvae are squashed before large numbers accumulate, serious leaf loss can be prevented. Sawfly mainly affects gooseberries, but red and white currants can also be attacked.

CABBAGE CATERPILLARS Midsummer is the time when caterpillars begin munching brassica (cabbage) family plants. The most damaging are the caterpillars of the large cabbage white

butterfly. Hatching from bright yellow eggs laid in clusters, the yellow/black striped caterpillars can rapidly skeletonise plants. Fortunately, these don’t tend to appear in any numbers until August. Earlier in the summer it’s the caterpillars of the small cabbage white butterfly and the cabbage moth that cause the most damage. The former are pale green and relatively sleek while the latter are brownish and rather podgy. All brassica related plants can be attacked including radish, salads like rocket and ornamentals like nasturtium. Checking plants for caterpillars is time consuming so I prefer to encase all brassicas in fine anti-butterfly netting. An often used cheaper alternative is scaffold net. If this is put on in late June or early July most caterpillar damage can be avoided.

QUESTION TIME If you’ve trouble with these or other pests or have any other fruit and veg growing questions why not come along to an Edible Gardeners’ question and answer evening to be held at Bootham School on 5th July? Organised by Edible York and York Allotments as part of the Bloom Festival, I’ll be on the panel alongside other knowledgeable local gardeners and allotment holders. Further information can be found at the Bloom website www.bloomyork.com.

YOUR FAMILY

PIT OF DESPAIR Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

I’m writing this in an upstairs room, peering down out of the window at my two eldest children playing in the garden. One has a water pistol and is intentionally soaking himself, while the other is seeing how close she dare ride her scooter by her brother’s exposed (and wet) toes. I watch them for a while, smiling. Although I’m happy to see them playing with gay abandon, my real pleasure stems from the fact that neither have yet noticed. You see, this summer... we’re not using the sand pit. I’ve written before about the sand pit;

50

H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N

mostly around April when it finally comes to cleaning the damn thing out after a winter of neglect. There are usually frogs in there, as well as spiders big enough to build their own sand castles. Digging up the damp, dirty sand is always a pain in a bum, as is disposing of it, cleaning the

GONE This year was different, though. When it came to removing the water-logged, weed-infested, amphibian-occupied sand, the whole job took about 20 minutes. There didn’t seem to be much sand left in there, forcing me to scout about the garden to see if our toddler had hidden it in plant pots or poured it down drains. Alas, he had not. If you’ve met him, you’d be surprised by that. Perplexed, and beginning to believe that the sand had either been stolen by the huge spiders to construct a base in the neighbour’s garden from where to launch their attack, or that there had been a glitch in the matrix, and our alien overlords had decided to alter the

over my back garden (did you know I have a clear view of the Minster from my house? You only have to go 30 metres straight up) and snapped a few shots. Dear God, it was everywhere.

ANGELS AND DEMONS. AND SAND. I hadn’t noticed from the ground, but it seemed that the sand from the sand pit had leaked, been blown, or – as previously suspected – carried by a toddler, to cover every inch of the ground. There was a think layer of sand over every conceivable surface in the garden: patio, lawn, mud kitchen, car

“Dear God, it was everywhere.” wooden frame itself, and purchasing the six million metric tonnes of play sand required to fill it back up (knowing the cycle will begin again next April. Like Sisyphus am I).

simulation in my favour, I reached for my drone. I’ve found that a drone can help in all manner of situations, from needing to take a photo from high above, to... needing to take a video from high above. I sent the wee thing skywards

ADVANTAGE, DADDY

question all along. Swearing, I landed the drone and reached for the pressure washer. Back to now, with the garden cleaned and sand free, and the kids are drenching/endangering themselves without having realised that a usual feature of our summertime garden is missing. The sand pit itself is standing upright against the fence, empty, looking quite like the Stargate (had the budget of that film been about fifty quid). I intend to dismantle it later and stick it behind the play house. The cycle is broken. Next April I shall not toil. No, I’ll be sitting in a deck chair, sipping an elderflower cocktail, and enjoying my view of the Minster (via drone, obvs).

The episode has got me thinking about what else I can get away with not doing: basically, how can I take advantage of the kids’ forgetful, developing brains. Not bathing them is right out, as one of them goes to school and the teachers would notice the smell. Also, feeding is an essential I can’t forgo, as I really couldn’t stand an increase in the number of times each day I’m told ‘I’m huuungrrrry!’ Sick of it. What about Christmas? What if we just never mentioned it? It’s not like they know what time of year it is. If I managed to keep them from seeing the decorations in town (which usually go up around this time of year, right? Local joke!) they’d never know. We’d save thousands. So anyway... if you were hoping to bring your kids ‘round to my gaff to build sand castles this summer, you can get stuffed.

TRAINING FOR SUCCESS Over the past year 1400 businesses in York have benefited from hiring an apprentice. If you know of a hardworking, dedicated young apprentice, or a business that goes out of its way to encourage and help apprentices, this is your chance to see them recognised. Nominations are now open for the 2018 York Apprentice and Graduation

Every year around 3000 babies are born in York – let's put them all to work planting trees. Only joking, but the birth of a child in our fair city will soon mean a tree gets planted, thanks to City of York Council and York Rotary. The plan is to offer the parents of newly born kiddos the chance to have a tree planted in their baby's name, creating a new wooded area by the River Foss near to York St John's Sport Centre on Haxby Road. The initiative is part of the Rotary Club's plan to plant 47,000 new trees across the UK over the next year, as well as the government's plan to plant a

whopping 50 million before 2040. If the idea is growing on you (arf!), parents need only send their new bairn's name to www.yorkrotary.cvo.uk/ tree-partnership

NE GETTING YOUR AC ON T R E AT M E N T S P O T

ASK THE EXPERT

Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks us through methods of treating acne and keeping menacing pimples at bay.

CHEMICAL PEELS For some people, acne is a problem that fades once they hit their early twenties. Unfortunately for many of us, this simply doesn’t turn out to be the case. Acne is non-discriminatory; it can affect anyone regardless of gender, age or ethnicity. All blemishes and acne start the same way: inside a hair follicle, excess oil and dead skin cells contribute to the clogging of the pore. Here at skin doctor we have a range of services that can help you combat the nasty, and sometimes painful, outbreaks.

HARMONY XL The Harmony XL Laser uses blue light to destroy acne causing bacteria P.acnes, shrink sebaceous glands and reduce pore size. The treatments only take a few minutes and are completely pain free. Eight treatments in four weeks can help to clear your acne by 80% - 90%. We also offer Medical peels for acne, Oxygen microdermabrasion for Acne and Murad Acne Facials.

Clearing acne isn’t always straight forward; you may still find dark spots on your face or even textured areas where the surface of your skin has changed. These are acne scars and post acne marks. There are lots of things you can do to combat the after affects: A peel is an exfoliation stimulated by a chemical solution. It is a safe and common practice. And can be extremely helpful when treating scars.

MICRODERMABRASION Alternatively you could choose microdermabrasion. The top layer of dead skin is removed with an exfoliating material and this is complemented with vacuum suction to gently lift up the skin promoting healthy new cell growth. The Genuine Dermaroller Therapy works by puncturing the outermost layers

of your skin to create tiny pin prick injuries. These microscopic wounds will stimulate new collagen deposition until indented scars and deep lines are filled. Skin doctor clinics, Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly caring service. Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 01904 633 833

MYTH B U S T ER

Despite being a common skin condition, acne is pretty misunderstood. Despite popular belief none of the below factors play a direct role in causing acne.

POOR DIET People often believe that eating greasy food can play a role in acne. The truth is that although it may not be good for overall health, eating greasy food doesn’t play an important role in causing acne.

DIRT The biological reactions that cause acne happen under the skin, dirt on the surface, isn’t a big deal, in fact, washing your face too often could cause more harm than good.

ACNE IS INFECTIOUS No it isn’t. At all.
