You can July on us! Happy Easter! It is Easter, right? It certainly can’t be, say, the middle of summer already, can it? No way. We’re pretty sure the year has only just started, so there is no sweet way we’re already half way through it. Are we? Jeepers, we are! It’s July, for goodness sake! How on earth did that happen? It does explain why all the kids we pass by on the street give us that look which says ‘soon this city will be ours for the taking’. And they’re right; the school holidays cometh once more, when those darling little angles turn into over-excited monkeys and demand to be entertained EVERY DAY. If you’re a parent, and if the thought of the summer holidays is filling you with dread, take a YLLshaped chill pill, man. That’s because this issue of your favourite magazine that you find on the doormat each month is filled with summery goodness. Sure, you might immediately turn to our bustling events pages at the back of the mag, in hopes

that there will be many things to keep the wee sprogs busy (and there will be), but hold on. Did you also know that you can use this copy of Your Local Link for fun and games without even leaving the house? Lazy mums and dads, pray silence. Hand the mag to your kids and shout “find me a plumber!” The first one to correctly identify the advert of a plumber then wins a prize or something. Next you could declare, “name the members of the Distribution department,” and they’ll have to flip through the pages to find out. What we don’t recommend you do is say “find all the spelling and grammar errors!” as there are only six weeks in the holiday, and we’re sure your kids also need to sleep some time. That was a self-deprecating joke, which we’re okay about, because our command of the English language is perfekt and above kwestion. Anyway, good luck! sarah

SUMMER OF STUFF! Behold July; a month so full of amazing goings-on that York is quite literally swelling with awesomeness. There aren’t many nights out more British that sitting on the manicured lawn of a stately home, nibbling on sandwiches, and listening to rousing orchestral anthems - even in the pouring rain. Musical maestro Jae Alexander will lead the English National Orchestra in a rousing medley of traditional tunes, capped off with a huge firework display to put New Year’s Eve to shame. THE FOSS AIN’T ALL BAD Although it caused havoc during the Christmas floods of last year, we recently took a wander along the banks of the River Foss, spying clues for this month’s Treasure Hunt feature. Often referred to simply as ‘the other river’, the Foss is pretty cool, and a great place to lose a couple of hours of your day while following it’s weird city-centre course. Anyway, check out the first part of a two part Foss special Treasure Hunt in the next few pages.

We think it happened one day in June. There we were happily going about our business, wearing jackets and sleeping under duvets, when all of a sudden - wham! summer appeared. We had to quickly cast off our coats, yank the summer bedding from the airing cupboard, and dust off the iced coffee button on the espresso machine. Mental. Next year we’ll be ready for it; that tricky, flaky, crazy-hot season, with a bucket of ice water to throw over ourselves at a moment’s notice. You’ll never take us alive (or hot and sweaty in spring clothing), you hear us, summer? Never!

Just shut up and leave us alone, will ya!?! Yes, it finally happened... we’re 13! We’re a bit spottier now, and yes, we tend to smell quite strange after any physical exercise, but we’re still just as adorable. To celebrate our 13th birthday we’ve put together a silly little special feature looking at some of the things York has lost (and gained) in the past 13 years. You’ll also find out what some of us were up to 13 years ago, including what legendary musical act designer Hannah saw live in concert.

Speaking about following a course, have you noticed what came with this month’s mag? Check your doormat because the Learning for Everyone course booklet is a great way to get the creative and intellectual juices flowing. Containing dozens of fun and interesting courses and classes that you can sign up for right now, the brochure (that’s a nicer way of saying booklet, innit?) should provide everything you need to get info and contact details for the courses of your choice. Might we recommend a few classes in the fine art of dragon whispering? You never know, it might be in there.

and life in general

AS SeeN by rAChel rAGG

Well. I have finally done it. Moved house, that is. This feels little short of miraculous, given that the whole process has taken almost a year. The selling part was easy (thank you, Ashton’s): we put the house on the market last September and accepted a cash offer within a fortnight.

But it was then that the fun started. The accidental detour to South Yorkshire. The York homelessness (were it not for our spectacularly kind and supremely tolerant friends, the children and I would have been living in cardboard boxes for the past three months). However, that is all behind us. Our friends have their house and their lives back. I have removed several thousand boxes from their dining room and - although they have said we are welcome any time - have promised not to return for at least a year, on the grounds that it will take them that long to recover from the experience. Obviously, it is thrilling to be living in our own nice little house close to the centre of York. But that delight is as nothing compared to opening all the boxes that I packed up last October.

MEMORIALS

Bear in mind this was all stuff I evidently thought I needed (and, indeed, thought it was worth paying Hughes Removals to shift up and down the M1). And bear in mind that I was so excited about moving that I also omitted to label any of the boxes (“R’s Stuff” evidently meant something to me at the time). So this is where the fun really starts. Hmm, I think, opening the first one. Christmas is coming early! Ah. The avocado-saver, a vital purchase made some years ago in Barnitts and, um, never used (why did I ever imagine I would not eat an entire avocado in one go?) And the Boyes egg-slicer for hard-boiled eggs which I don’t eat, but which I bought because my maternal grandmother liked them (regardless of the fact that she had died several years previously). A cracked salad spinner.

At least there’s a kitchen theme going on, which suggests a certain degree of organisation. Then I unearth a dead electric toothbrush. The next one looks more promising. “Children’s Clothes”, the ominous black marker declares. And indeed they are. Only the boy who was five foot two when I put the clothes in their boxes is now closer to six foot two. And the girl takes one look and declares her entire stored wardrobe “so not cool”, and demands a trip to Monks Cross Primark. NOW, THIS MINUTE.

The mention of Monks Cross Primark is starting to make me think that whoever said moving house was on a par with divorce and death might have been on to something. And so I hastily look inside another “Stuff” box. And equally hastily close it again. It contains a rabble of stray items from hair bobbles to loose playing cards to the fur trim from a child’s coat. Every single item would need decanting into a sensible place. So I even more sensibly Sellotape it back up and mark it “Hazel Court Tip”. At this point, I am thrilled to open a further “Stuff” box which turns out to contain three bottles of gin. Along with a long-lost trophy from a music competition (which I replaced some time ago at great cost) and my missing Robson and Cooper bag. The

This box-opening malarkey is already starting to feel less like Christmas, and more like hard work. But I persist, uncovering chopsticks (why?), defunct phones, anonymous electrical cables, a broken jar of jam, and old towels and pillows for the dog we don’t possess. Eventually, I finish. I am surrounded by detritus and flattened boxes. But where are my saucepans? And where are my wine glasses? More to the point: where are the mattresses? I am in my new house, and I can save half an avocado, but I have nothing to sleep on. There is nothing for it. I ring my longsuffering friends. “You know you said we were welcome any time? Well... I just was wondering about tonight. I can bring an eggslicer, if that would help...”

You’ll take stock of your world, and on one level will be pleased enough with what you’re achieving and what you have got. But on another level, there is the usual Cancerian frustration caused by wanting more, or of wanting something you can’t have, at least not right now! Train journeys will have some role to play in the lives of some of you, while others may find themselves queuing at the check in counter at any one of half a dozen airports. One cannot ignore the concept of holiday travel, but there is something else going

on here which makes at least one journey extra special, that probably has very little to do with vacations. Communications are very important between the 7th and the 13th – a lot of phone calls, some of them quite heavy, and more than a flurry of emails. Be careful of what you commit yourself to at this time. It would be all too easy to decide in haste then repent at leisure. Also, in affairs of the heart, people are going to take you at your word – quite literally – so choose those words carefully.

A bright and optimistic month for most of you, and regardless of holiday plans, you seem to be enjoying more quality time in pursuit of social connections. It’s a good month for networking, for impressing other people (especially members of the opposite sex), and for getting out a bit more. Light hearted evenings can become long loving nights. Enjoy!

Steady work routines without many highs or lows; you seem to be very much in control over what you are doing and will be content to work at your own speed. If this turns out to be the wrong speed for other people, well really, this is their problem, not yours! The 20th augers well for business deals and conversations, while the 28th favours sex and romance.

As July is all about dealing with practical matters, you need to be practical in your outlook, maybe relying a bit more on logic and common sense than instinct and intuition. This serves you well not only in any work related issues, but it also keeps things in perspective when you are dealing with complicated emotional affairs.

There is a sense of movement in the House of Scorpio which suggests that travel and property continue to have some importance in your thoughts and ideas – but it also suggests that this could be a time for changing your mind about a few things and moving on to new areas of challenge and endeavour. A partner will try hard to influence you.

CAPRICORN A soft and rather gentle month in which there are not likely to be any sudden crises. Relationships progress well and should find greater depths of meaning and commitment. Travel aspects tie in with holidays and/or family reunions, and both at home and at work, other people will show their appreciation of your efforts and endeavours.

AQUARIUS 21st jan - 18th feb If you ask for something nicely and are refused, or even worse, ignored, then it is time to change tactics and to become a little more aggressive in your attitudes. This is especially true for gentlemen of the sign. There is some boredom with all work and career related matters, and you might easily find yourself sacrificing some security in favour of adventure.

PISCES 19th feb - 20th mar Looks like there’s a bit more money going out than there is coming in, but it also looks like you’re in control of the process and get something of value in return for your hard earned cash. New cars and holidays come to mind, but there is also the kind of situation

where you’re spending some money to impress a member of the opposite sex... very successfully!

ais

big picture - which is a picture where you stand centre stage. You have great influence over other people at this time, so use it wisely and don’t push your luck. Some of you will be very focused on the career prospects for your children.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR Time ticks by really slow when you’re waiting for something to happen; and this is a month of waiting, of feeling frustrated and impatient. There is a date ahead in the calendar which you are obsessively focused upon. This is fine, but do not miss out on the pleasures of the present and don’t wish your time away. We’re never certain how much of it we’ve got left.

TAURUS A work project takes up much of your time and attention, and while it may be hard work, you’ll be enthusiastic about what you’re doing and what you’re trying to achieve. Many members of the sign will be looking into their histories to discover the pathways forwards into their future; this is not just nostalgia, but the means towards a specific end.

GEMINI 22nd may - 21st jun A few dangerous liaisons excite the romantic side of your nature, especially during the first few days of the month when you come under pressure from someone nice to do something naughty. A few of you will resist the temptation, but the majority will say “what the hell” and will risk enjoying something which is, well, naughty, but very very nice.

CLUB More ThAN jUST bikeS… The Bike Rescue Project, the local charity that fixes up old and broken bikes for sale and to donate to worthy causes, is known for having an army of skilled volunteers. However, what is not so well known is that those volunteers aren’t just fixing bikes. In a move to expand skill bases and remove some of the obstacles to cycling that many people face, the charity is moving beyond training mechanics to help people earn vital experience in the likes of customer service, craft and jewellery making, and fundraising. Hopefully this expansion will provide more chances for different people to get involved, help the charity help others, and lead them to exciting new opportunities. MUCkiNG iN Ahh, summer... just the right time of year to laze around and not do much. Although that sounds like the perfect thing to do this month, take heed; nature can't take a holiday, and there's a little spot of it that still very much needs your help. Designated a 'site of special scientific interest' by the government, (as well as 'drop dead lovely' by us) Rawcliffe Meadows is an important part of York's vibrant ecosystem. The Friends of Rawcliffe Meadows, a voluntary group of friendly nature-loving types, need your help; be it to attend one of their work parties to help maintain the site, or bolster their ranks as a member. To find out more about this great bunch (and what's happening at the meadows), visit www.rawcliffemeadows.wordpress. com

STUff-STrUTTiNG What do you think about modern dance? If you immediately declared “Bah! It’s nowt but jiggling your bits at strangers”, read on. That is because York Vintage Dance Group might have a class for you, allowing fans of traditional swing, jive, tango and stroll dances to “get down with their bad selves”, while having tonnes of fun with friends and getting a healthy dose of exercise. Taking place regularly at Haxby Sports & Social Club, the group are also running a taster session on 12th August, 7.30-9pm, for one and all to try their... feet... at some of the dances. Whether alone or with a partner, it will be a great night out. And definately no ‘bit-jiggling’. You know, unless you want to... Visit www.yorkvintagedance.co.uk

WAlk ThiS WAy Walking for half a mile might not seem like a lot, but for some people with mobility issues it be the equivalent of a marathon. Half a mile is the distance between St Mary’s Church in Haxby and St Nicholas’ Church in Wigginton, so to help raise money for, and awareness of, local charity Blake’s Genes, one group is inviting all of us to walk it with them. York-born Blake, two, was born with a rare genetic disease which makes it hard for him to walk. Taking place on 9th July, starting at 11.30am from St Mary’s in Haxby, one and all are encouraged to come along – fancy dress always welcome – and take a walk as a community, to help Blake get better. Refreshments and fun await in Wigginton, so make sure you wear sturdy shoes! Email steejoh47@aol.com

Dear Dear

Daphne Daphne Got Got a problem? a problem?

OF COURSE YOUYOU HAVE. OF COURSE HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out. soon sort you out.

BOriNG GirlFrieND Hey Daphne, I’ve recently been feeling really jealous of my friend’s relationships. They seem to be so in love and always doing fun things with their partners. I’ve been with my boyfriend for three years and we still love each other but it doesn’t seem to be as fun and exciting as theirs. They’re always posting on social media the fun things they are doing, or telling me about cute things that happened. We have our moments but I’m worrying that it should be more exiting. Boring Girlfriend, Bishopthorpe Road Hey Boring Girlfriend. Don’t beat yourself up about this! Ok so they say their relationships are all sunshine and rainbows. Well in the first year it sure does seem like that with all the dates and the getting to know each other. The truth is, just because you don’t feel like you don’t have as much to write home about doesn’t mean that your relationship is any less fun or meaningful. Once you know someone’s favourite food or worst film, you can’t ask them again and guess what, that’s totally ok.

URRY

We have now started running our

My partner of 5 years and I happily sit in silence watching Netflix, quite frankly it’s cheap, and we’ve got every day of the year to natter with each other and have food fights and dance under the stars blah blah blah you get the idea. The fact that the excitement has plateaued but what remains is a strong and reliable love is nothing to be ashamed of. It always pays to remember that just because you only get told about the good bits, doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of bad bits you’re not hearing about too. You and your partner have your moments, and after three years, that’s absolutely fantastic. Carry on enjoying your long term relationship. Sincerely, Ignore Your Mates They Chat Rubbish and let’s face it, if someone has to boast about how great their relationship is – it probably isn’t.

MUMMY’S BOY Daphne, I love my mum to bits but since I got a girlfriend I’ve noticed that she’s a little bit suffocating. I’ve not been with my girlfriend for long and already my mum has decided that she doesn’t approve of her. She says she’s too bossy and is round at our house too much. I don’t think my girlfriend is bossy at all and I’ve noticed my mum can be really cold with her. She purposely comes into my room and leaves the door open when she’s round too. Jack, Stockton on the Forrest Hey Jack, I’m not sure how old you are, which could be quite a strong factor in this, for example if you’re still young maybe your mum is worried about what you are up to behind that closed door. Anyway surely you have enough time together behind a closed door when your mum is not there? There is no need for your mum however to decide she doesn’t like your girlfriend without good cause and she should definitely keep her opinions to herself regardless. On the other hand is she polite to your mum or does she glare at her and make her feel uncomfortable? Take off your rose tinted glasses and look at the issue as if you were an outsider looking in. If you genuinely think she is being unreasonable and you’re happy with your girlfriend then it’s got nothing to do with her at all. A grown up conversation is most definitely required. But make it between you and her only. As difficult as it is be brave. Your mum may be feeling a bit of empty nest syndrome now that there’s another important lady in your life and that is never an easy pill to swallow. So approach the topic gently and make sure she knows it’s tough on you when she doesn’t try to get on with

your girlfriend. And make sure you have the same chat with your girlfriend. Use this as practice for when you have kids and have to have those difficult conversations with them. Maybe you’ll also appreciate what your mum is saying now.

Career Girl Dear Daphne, I’ve always been focused on having a good career and I hope to go far. At the moment I’m pretty happy with where I am at my work, I’m paid well and love what I do, but it already feels like I’m working at full capacity. I feel like I’m always spinning plates and if this is how many plates I need to spin to be where I am today, how am I going to get any further without it all crashing down? Plate Spinner, Clifton Moor Keep spinning! You’ll find that the more you practise spinning those plates the easier it will get. These metaphorical plates will become easier to bear and as you progress you will get bigger ones and be able to pass some of the little ones down. Don’t stress, I wake up some days and think can I actually write? Am I writing enough? Shall I go and bury my head in the sand? Am I big fat phony who has written a book of lies? (Don’t answer). I will ponder over writing a list of things to do and then decide that the list will freak me out so forget about it, but the fact is I’ve been doing this for years now and it’s all fine. I remember that yes I can write – my boss says I can and so does my mum and actually I think I’m alright deep down too. You can do it – you’re awesome. Daff x

york life Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: The ASSeMbly rooMS In 1722 author Daniel Defoe, while visiting York on a tour of the whole country, said of the city: “There is abundance of good company here, and abundance of good families. A man converses here with all the world as effectually as at London; the keeping up assemblies among

the younger gentry was first set up here. Basically, what the writer of Robinson Crusoe meant, was that York possessed some posh people who liked to show off. It's true, and we did so in style. The York Assemblies, which began at around the time of Defoe's visit, were set up for the gentry of the city to meet, play games, dance, and basically show themselves off. The meetings were essentially the nightclubs of their day, but you could hear each other speaking and the tables were less sticky. The get-togthers were originally hosted in King's Manor or at wealthy people's homes,

until several of these elites decided they needed a dedicated venue. hUrly bUrliNGToN The site on Blake Street was selected, and the architectural services of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, were sought. Burlington designed a huge and grand set of rooms, based around a ballroom styled after an ancient Egyptian hall. Influenced by the 16th century Italian architect Palladio, Burlington set Corinthian columns amidst grand bays, all hidden behind a fairly simple exterior. Work started in 1730, and although it was used for dance during race week of 1732, the Assembly Rooms weren't totally finished until 1735, making it the earliest Neoclassical building in Europe (so the current owners, The York Conservation Trust, believe).

From that point on the rooms were THE place to be seen in York. As well as the monthly assemblies the buildings also hosted seasonal balls, private parties, and grand civic events. However, as beautiful and as imposing as the interior of the building was and still is, it was quite unpopular with one rather archaic group. The chaperones of those attending the balls often made complaints that, because the York Assembly Rooms lacked a balcony, it made it difficult to keep an eye on their charges, especially due to those big columns getting in the

22 LL July 2016.indd 22

20/06/2016 17:03

hAviNG A bAll The following century saw a few changes to the fabric of the building, most significantly the knocking-through into the two side rooms, increasing the size (but not so much the dancing space) of the main ballroom. Also the outside front (or façade) was completely redesigned in 1829, and in 1885 the steps up to the entrance were changed to allow the pavement to cut through (ever noticed that you have to walk under the columns as you pass by on Blake Street?). But the biggest change in the building's history is not one of bricks and timber, but of society. Balls and high society parties fell out of fashion in the early 20th century, and the theatre and cinemas in the city brought in other forms of entertainment. The Assembly Rooms, now in dear need of cosmetic attention, were purchased by the York Corporation in 1925, but repairs and restoration didn't begin until 1939. A major

way. Who knows what naughtiness the young dĂŠbutantes got up to while their chaperones couldn't see. Back to the nightclub analogy, we suppose!

renovation took place in 1951 with much of the Georgian look and style of the interior being restored. A PizzA-hiSTory As we said, the designer Burlington was influenced by an Italian... and that's exactly what you'll get if you visit the Assembly Rooms today. Although still used for special events, many of them Georgian-themed, the building now plays permanent home to the Italian chain restaurant Ask. If you think that's a shame, and that cheap pizza and pasta is a far cry from the grand and exciting assemblies of the 18th century, you're dead wrong. There aren't many stunning old buildings like this that you can just walk into, sit down, and soak up the views; still using it as it was originally intended for socialising, conversation, dining, and fun. And you could always get up and dance. If you want.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

U N AvA i l A b l e Born this month 2372 years ago, Alexander III of Macedon (AKA 'The Great') had, by the age of 30, established one of the largest empires of the ancient world. It stretched from Greece all the way to India, and had a significance influence on world culture for centuries to follow. Howard I of Doncaster, by the age of 34, had yet to learn how to drive, still didn't really understand what a mortgage was, and whose only great military victory was pushing passed a Press photographer to shake Brian Blessed's hand first. He has yet to influence world culture. To be fair to myself, I've never actually tried to conquer Persia, least of all because I can't seem to find it on Google Earth. I have no desire to establish an empire any bigger than the series of soggy sand castles I built in the kids' sandpit, so comparing oneself to someone who, without irony, added the word 'Great' to their name - and nobody laughed - is a bit harsh. I have, however, been feeling a bit sorry myself of late for not being a... wait for it... PROPER ADULT.

ADULTING

OBSOLETE MODEL

PROPER ADULTS are people who, when they turn 18, are updated to the operating system called Human 4.0, which allows them to comprehend complex and mysterious ideas like filing important documents, applying for loans, and attending dentist check-ups, even when they're not in excruciating pain. That is what I once thought happened

to everyone else, and that I must have missed my update. I spent my 20s in a childish haze, assuming that my update to adulthood would come the very moment I had children; as if along with the newborn baby, amniotic fluid, and umbilical cord, a woman's uterus also released Human 4.0 gas into the atmosphere. 'Breath deeply', I told myself while awaiting the day. But when it came I found that I had become a parent, not necessarily a PROPER ADULT. Just like a Channel 4 documentary set in a really rough council estate, it seems that children do in fact have children.

I was reminded of my lack of adultness (adultery? No, that's something else) recently when our car blew up. Fortunately it did so in a very contained way and only three feet from the end of our drive. As I was pushing it back onto the drive, glad it hadn't done this while whizzing along the A1 the day before, I thought 'It'll be fine. It's probably just the battery.' It wasn't, and two days later it was collected for scrap. According to the nice man in the car-fixing-place, the problem was the very thing he had warned me and my wife about two years previously. “You should get that fixed soon,” his deep, sensible, and resolutely PROPER ADULT voice warned back then. “When that goes, it'll take the whole engine with it.” Obviously a PROPER ADULT would've got that sorted then and there, but as you might have guessed from the flow of this article, I ain't one. Poo pants willy boobs! See.

PADDLE, ANYONE?

So now Team Mosley-Chalk are up a certain creek without a certain petrolpowered vehicle, hunting around for a new one. I won't even bother getting into the quagmire that is buying a car, because again that is something that only PROPER ADULTS are able to do without being ripped off and forking out thousands of pounds for what turns out to be something that The Joker would try and trick Batman into driving, knowing that it would explode the moment he sneezed. Oh, and hey... to buy a new car you need your driving license, right? Yeah, we lost my wife's. But that's okay because we'll get her another

yoUr fAMily

one with her passport! Oh, that's out of date. But that's okay, because we'll just apply for a renewal! Oh wait, she's changed her name since then when she married this manchild. But that's okay because we have a marriage certificate to prove the name change. Yeah, we've lost that. We're drifting further down the creek, aren't we?

JUDGED

So, at time of writing, we're waiting for an old lady in South Queensferry town hall to send us a duplicate copy of our marriage certificate so we can do passport, driving license, and then car. Meanwhile, even our almost-six year old daughter is looking at us with disappointment. I'm pretty sure the other night in her sleep she shouted 'Grow up, daddy!' Wouldn't blame her. Maybe PROPER ADULTS aren't updated and improved humans; maybe they're just organised. No, it's definitely a mythical update. Poo pants willy boobs! Oh, and Alexander the Great wasn't all that good. He named a city after his horse. Ha, idiot.

For the past three months our Treasure Hunt feature has been dedicated to following the mighty Ouse... but lets not forget it’s smaller relative. This month we start the first of a two-part trail along the River Foss (or rather the bits of it we can get to in the city centre!). As ever, wear sturdy shoes, follow the tour in day light (ideally with company), and never attempt it if there is any sign of flooding. The Foss flood? Pah, never!

STeP 3 Emerging onto Picadilly, cross the street (careful – buses!) and turn right. Immediately turn left along Merchantgate, and then left again onto Fossgate. Stop on the gorgeous Foss Bridge to take in the view of the river below. • If you were to take this hunt on a bike, what would be the best colour for it to be around here?

STeP 1

We start our trail where Harry meets Sally, or rather where the Foss meets the Ouse... by Blue Bridge. Start on the Fishergate side of the bridge (and don’t cross it over toward Skeldergate Bridge!) • Don’t worry, you’re not about to attempt it, but how many miles from here to Easingwold? • Head along the path by the river’s edge, with the Foss Barrtier to your left. Browny Dyke what? • Continue along the river and head up the steps. Name this lock.

STeP 2

STeP 4 Leaving the river behind, head up Fossgate a bit before turning right onto Straker’s Passage. Follow the little snickleway before alighting by the God-awful BT Telephone Exchange building. Turn right, and head toward the river (there’s a little cut through the red brick wall). As you emerge you’ll immediately see the old Rowntree’s building towering up to your left. Walk along the water’s edge. • Which exchange’s fire assembly point will you pass? • up the steps and across the bridge; what kind of walkway gets slippy when wet?

Right, prepare to go ‘off river’ and ‘on road’. Head up the steps to street level and turn left. When you can, cross the road and walk toward Clifford’s Tower, passing it by on your left. Cross the car park (ahh, beautiful York) and head for the water’s edge by the trees. You’re on a little path between the Foss and the Coppergate Centre. • Across the water can you spot evidence that the romans are still very much occupying York? • Heading to the left, follow the path. Whose rainbow Foundation? • Name the school that used to be on this site (the former pupils and staff were kind enough to donate a tree).

Continue along the raised walkway before heading down the steps to road level (noticing, but not taking, York’s newest river bridge, heading into the new Hungate developments). • As you follow the curve of the river to the left, why might Santa be a bit intimidated around here? • You might have heard about (or lived through) the trouble Tang Hall Beck caused during the floods, but can you spot where it joins the Foss? • Approaching the second blue bridge on this tour, when was the (currently) closed off walkway constructed? It's about to get a bit messy again we're afraid. At the traffic lights

step 6 cross over to the Layerthorpe side of the road (by the carpet

and bed store) then cross again to get on the footpath that runs toward Sainsbury's. After a few feet the Foss will reappear on your right. Follow the river. • As well as the supermarket there is another store urging you to go somewhere. But you're actually already there. What is it? • As the road bends to the left, what number Lifebuoy Housing can you find? • Nearly there! If you're thirsty, which Brigadier could you ask for a drink?

Fabulous, affordable TILES & Bathrooms You’ve reach the bridge leading into Heworth, and our stopping point for this section of the Foss walk. To get back into town head along Monkgate, or if you wish, just stand there until next month when we’ll pick up the trail and continue. LEEDS

LUCKY FOR SOME

It’s our birthday! Yay! This month Your Local Link turns 13 years young, and like a lot of 13 year olds we’re quickly getting bigger and bigger and starting to think about what we’d like to be when we grow up. We’re hoping to be York’s most read publication. Oh, wait a minute. Done.

Anyway, York has changed a lot in the past 13 years. Here's what the city has gained, and also what we've lost...

LOST...

SPlASh PAlACe In 2012, after more than 20 years as one of York's go-to places to pee, the toilet block on Parliament Street (AKA Splash Palace) was demolished. Sure, it might have been replaced with better facilities on Silver Street, but who could forget the fragrant aromas and fascinating graffiti? A great loss indeed.

The AbiliTy To look Where We're All GoiNG In 2003 mobile phones were tiny things in our pockets, occasionally chirping out the odd bleep. These days they seem to be in our hands constantly, as we all gaze down at those massive screens, checking social media and not even looking up to cross Gillygate.

WATerWorld Another sort of palace of splash, Water World was finally torn down after only 17 years of fond, and

wet, memories. Right now the site where many people used to call “Weeeeeee”, and also, “Urgh, there's weeeee in the toddler pool,” is a pile of rubble, currently being developed into York's new super stadium and leisure centre. We'll let you now how long that lasted on our 26th birthday.

GAINED... The iNTerNeT Sure, York had the internet in 2003, but it was the kind that you had to 'dial up' and wait several seconds for pictures to pop up. Pictures?!? These days York is not only boasting some super quick net connections, but we're actually one of the fastest cities in the UK for internet speed.

boNUS GArdeNS They may have been open for less than a year, but the new garden area behind the revamped Art Gallery is a big boost to the city's public spaces. This is the first summer you can enjoy them, and although (at time of press) they are somewhat 'unfinished', it's still great to be able to wander around a newly opened up section of York.

deSirAble STATUS Of course, our gracious city has always been desirable (the Vikings came here mostly for the independent shops and cafes - true

story), but in the past 13 years we've won some interesting accolades. The users of search engine Bing voted York the most desirable place to live in the UK (although why these people aren't just using Google like the rest of us, we don't know), and according to uSwitch in 2015 York ranked 9th in

//Music corner//

Bad moods don’t last forever... WHO: Ash WHERE: Fibbers WHEN: Tuesday 26th July INFO: I’m a big fan of Ash so I was buzzed to hear they’ll be gracing York with their presence. My fave always has, and always will be, Girl From Mars. Old but undeniabley gold!

I heard the rip shortly after lunch time at college. After a whole three months of wear and tear my favourite black skinny jeans had finally decided to give in as I bent down to pick up a text book. Obviously this was annoying but can we all just take a minute to think about this; a piece of clothing that only lasted for three months. The old saying buy cheap buy twice is ringing around my head as I write this. Amazing, I thought as I shuffled through the main hall of the college with a four inch rip under my left bum cheek – just what I needed today. The rest of the day went by in a hurried blur of rushing to the next classroom with my hand over my bum, and breathing a sigh of relief every time I got to sit down. Eventually college finished and I headed out into the car park, where my wonderful little run around had been given a parking ticket.

I could see the bright yellow git from across the car park so I just stared at it as I got closer hoping that if I stared hard enough it would disappear. Yeah that didn’t work, it just stayed put. I rolled my eyes and wondered what I could’ve possibly done wrong lately for karma to come back and bite me on the bum like this. By the time I got home I had jaw ache from clenching my teeth together so hard. I’d sworn at the top of my voice inside my car on the way home at anyone who dared pull out on me with less than 200 yards space and my hands were kind of clammy. In the grand scheme of things that could go wrong on a Monday – this really wasn’t a bad deck of cards – but I got so het up about it, it felt like I’d had the worse day ever. It’s dead easy to forget that there are other people having a much worse day than you and I’m certainly guilty of this.

I have a bad Monday I’m going to laugh at all the funny stuff that happens to me and remember that it’s not that bad after all – it’s only a bad day, not a bad life.

I have nearly finished my NCTJ course! Literally I’ve got one exam left and I cannot believe it. It’s been two years since I started the course and Your Local Link has been with me every step of the way. I can do shorthand, I’m trained in media law – I can write an alright story too, apparently. It’s been amazing and I’ve learnt so much interesting stuff. I’m so glad I decided to an apprenticeship and the experience I’ve gained whilst training and working has been unreal. But

from now on this mag has got my full and undivided attention. Our readers can expect to see lot’s more on our social media outlets with the help from the lovely Natalie who will be helping us make sure you guys are kept in the loop. There will be even more York Life stories online and events from Dani too. So watch this space, and follow us to see what I’m having for dinner everyday... nah don’t worry it’s much better than that, I promise!

Like hey, its crap but at least I can afford to buy another pair of rubbish £12 jeans from a well-known high street store. Come to mention it I’ve still got jaw ache now, so maybe it’s a wisdom tooth, who knows? Anyway next time

with Dan Tait Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

A ruckus indeed

After York City’s relegation I felt like boycotting football until the opening day of next season. Of course no such thing was allowed with the small matter of the Euros taking place. At time of writing we are still in the group stages with Cristiano Ronaldo as magnanimous as ever in not getting his own way, after a 1-1 draw with Iceland saw him spit his proverbial dummy out again. “I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable”, which the

Guardian summed up perfectly as a typical response from “a man who thinks the successful conversion of a penalty is ample reason to launch into a full Chippendales routine”. I can understand his embarrassment at drawing with a supermarket side, but surely a real winner is someone gracious in both victory and defeat. It’s good to see ITV have gone all out with their coverage, presenting on top of a car park roof with a cheap Eiffel Tower model, bought from the nearest Car boot sale, as a table.

Of course some of the biggest football stories remain off the pitch, with English, French and Russian hooligans all doing their best to ruin the spectacle for those who actually travel to watch the games. Yet somehow Russia is responsible for hosting the World Cup in two years’ time! Also, Ballon D’or winner Lionel Messi is in the news for accused tax evasion. It made me laugh when he said he didn’t check his wage slips. To be fair, would you at over £400,000 per week? He isn’t exactly going to be checking his student loan and cycle to work scheme outgoings. Whilst the Euros have been going on, York City have been busy in the transfer market. All supporters will be hoping returning hero Richard Brodie will hit the ground running. If he has another season half as good as the one where he notched 37 goals we will all be pleased. I had to do a double take when I saw the headline “York sign Rooney”; Shaun Rooney from Dunfermline didn’t quite have the same outcome I was hoping for.

A full pre-season schedule will commence this month with notable friendlies against Middlesbrough (9th july) and bolton (23rd july) announced so far.

The York City Knights Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the new York City Knights Ladies team. The side, which is based on the former York Ladies team, will play their games in the Summer Merit League of this year’s women's competition. To launch the new venture the York City Knights coaching team, led by Head Coach James Ford, delivered a session for the team and the Army Ladies Rugby League team, as they prepared for their Challenge Cup fixture against Selby Warriors WRL.

The gloves come on

Onto boxing now, and I know David Haye has this deal with Dave TV; a channel renowned for showing comedy repeats, but did he really have to have an identical set up in his second comeback fight to his first? Facing the unbeaten Arnold Gjergjaj, nicknamed ‘The Cobra’, but as people have rightly commented since, he was more of an ‘Earthworm’. One of my boxing commentary bugbears is when someone says “oh, he knows his way around the ring”; an obvious comment and something I believed was a minimum requirement in that particular sport, but I don’t think Arnold knew what day it was let alone what he was doing fighting a former world champion. So surely 20,000 fans in the O2, and over three million watching at home, won’t be deceived again? Well we will find out soon enough when Haye takes on Shannon Briggs in September. Briggs is deemed a massive step up, despite the fact he is 44 years old!

booSTed boArd. What, a skateboard? You’re a highflying executive, not some hooded top-wearing yob. But wait, because this skateboard costs £1000. Ah yes; now you know it is needlessly expensive, suddenly you’re interested. The Boosted Board is a battery powered electric longboard which can achieve speeds of 22mph for a distance of seven miles. Controlled by a wireless remote, you simply stand on the Boosted Board, squeeze a button, and you’re off. Imagine cruising by all those loser kids as they huff and puff on their ‘cheap’ skateboards, while you stand noble upon your own board, gliding up hill without the slightest break of sweat. Doing away with the dodgy dealers

You don’t need us to tell you that buying a car can be a risky business. If you don’t know your stuff, how do you know you’re not being ripped off by some shifty salesman? Simple; get yourself to Copycars in Copmanthorpe, as not only can you take their word for how honest they are, you can take the government’s too. Copycars are the first garage in York to be awarded the new Trading Standards Approved Garage award, which is given only to car sales companies who demonstrate a fair, open, and honest approach to car sales, while also boosting the confidence of their customers, and improving the reputation of the industry as a whole. Big congratulations are due to Copycars, based on Main Street, so why not pop along and see the team yourself? Visit www.copycars.co.uk

More than a car

Do you drive a Mini? The little cars have been massively popular with all kinds of drivers for decades, but if you love nothing better than flooring the accelerator on your pint-sized petrol-guzzler, here’s a question: is it a boy or a girl. The practice of naming (and therefore assigning a gender to) Minis is long-observed, which is why the organisers of the event Mini World Live are running the first ever Mini Census. They would like to now the name, gender, and age of your Mini, as well as info about you. “Minis and the people that drive them always have plenty of character,” says Kat Chappell, organiser. “We want to celebrate this by finding the most popular, as well as some of the more unusual names that people give to their Minis.” To enter your Mini into the census, go to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MQLG8DM

Zero to 330mph in four seconds, anyone? Although that kind of acceleration sounds like something only astronauts would experience while blasting off to the International Space Station, now racing car drivers can get in on the action, too. Developed by Chevrolet, the 10,000bhp (!) National Hot Rod Association car has been designed to put as much power down onto the tarmac as quickly as possible, and thanks to the uniquely styled body, it can rip through the air at incredible speeds. So although you probably won't be seeing a car like this tearing a hole in space along Wigginton Road any time soon, it's nice to know that the motoring industry is giving the aviation industry a run for its money. Come on aeroplane people; try harder!

Motorcyclists! Ever had your prize ‘n’ joy bike knicked? If you have, you’ll know the anger and heartbreak such an incident can produce... and the day dreams of revenge you’ll enjoy imagining getting your hands on the thieves. One British inventor has an idea; catch the fiends in the act, and get them to poop their pants! The Bike Mine has just launched on crowd-funding website Kickstarter, where people can pledge money toward a device that, once attached to you motorcycle, will make it pinch-proof. When the bike is moved without the Bike Mine being deactivated, a loud explosion occurs, producing a crack of more than 150 decibels – about the same volume as a shotgun blast. This should not only draw the attention of passers-by to the would-be robber’s activities, but also scare the bejesus out of them. If you buy one, just remember to carry some wet wipes in the storage box of your bike. Just in case you return to find... a mess.

Although it’s always sad when a local business gears down to closing its doors for good, there is one fantastic way to see them off: buy everything! Lynden Design has been producing and fitting the very highest quality bedrooms, kitchens, dressing rooms, and studies for 31 successful years, but following the news that the owners are (quite deservedly) retiring, the large showroom in Poppleton is awash with incredible everything-must-go offers! Bedroom furniture, kitchen suites, desks, and everything your home design project needs to match your dreams, is all on offer, and all horrendously reduced.  To see for yourself, visit www.lyndendesign.co.uk or call 795694.

A WALK ON THE WLD SIDE There aren't many family-run businesses these days that can boast half a century of successful trading, but next year that's just what the Dodd family will be doing. Started in 1967 by a husband and wife team, WLD Textiles originally supplied DIY shops with curtain tracks and accessories. Over the years they have expanded into huge premises on Lawrence Street, and now stock a large selection of DIY items, housewares, and electrical products. No matter what you need for your home, you'll likely find it in the 10,000 square foot showroom. Be it decking out your kid's first student flat, or lavishly furnishing your dining room, WLD can help. Still carrying their extensive curtain track and pole ranges, the team will also help with your DIY projects, and with the choice of beds, dining sets, and occasional furniture, it's no surprise that landlords and letting agents have been coming back decade after decade. So to benefit from three generations of expertise, call WLD today.  Call 413453 or visit www.wldyork.co.uk

It is staggering the number of different options available to you these days if you are in need of replacing that trusty midi system, radiogram, or amplifier that has finally given up the ghost. Unfortunately with more choice often comes more confusion, so please read on for your modern musical “starter for ten”. Wireless means different things to different people, and these days it no longer refers only to the humble radio but more frequently to pieces of hi-fi kit that can talk to the internet and each other without the need to run cables in between. You will hear these types of system referred to by names such as internet radios or multi-room systems depending on the product, but to you and me the bottom line is that you will get a wire free device that can bring you music from all over the world and still bring you Georgey Spanswick in the morning!

…GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM

If you go one step further and sign up to a streaming service – a ten minute job that will then bring you a lifetime of joy (we can help with this!) – you can listen to all your favourite music in whichever room you want, discover new music you might never have known existed and have access to new albums without the need to buy another CD ever again. If any of this sounds good to you (pardon the pun) then please call in for a demonstration. Listening to music can change your whole outlook and so I genuinely believe these products can change your life for the better if we can just get past the confusion of what’s actually on offer!  Visit www.htodd.co.uk

JOIN THE TREASURE HUNT! They say that one man's trash is another man's treasure, and although that might explain why our binmen are so jolly, it's worth bearing n mind as you visit this new family-run business. Junk & Jewels have a whole warehouse filled with quality pre-loved products, from garden furniture and dining room tables, to upholstery fabrics and other hidden gems. N o T A PATC h o N yo U If you’re looking to start growing your own fruit and veg, we salute you! Start as you mean to go on with this bunch of brilliant ideas. Give your plants the platform they deserve. Raised veg patches can be an aesthetic bonus to your outdoor space if you play your cards right. We also like to minimalize any risk of backache. Littlewoods offer a ready-made setting for your plants: FOREST Tiered Raised Bed costs £139.99 from www.littlewoods.com but If you’re feeling super handy, reclaimed pallets would fit the bill perfectly. When was the last time a stone came in handy? Nope, your ex-girlfriend’s window doesn’t count. However, out in the garden, stones can come into play – use them to label exactly where you are growing what, or disguise them as strawberries. When birds go to peck the faux fruit they will decide it’s no good to them and cease to return. Good right?

July may seem a little late to the party, but believe it or not there’s a host of wonderful vegetables you can plant now. Quick maturing herbs such as basil and coriander are fine. Lettuce and spring onions can also go out. There are some winter vegetables you can start sowing

too, cauliflower, kale, and leeks will be good to go. Most good garden centres will stock vegetable seeds.  Check out Deans Garden Centre York (www.deansgardencentre.co.uk) or Browns Nurseries (brownsnurseries-york.co.uk) for a start.

As well as making sure you’re caring for your fruit and veg properly, you also need to make sure to keep them safe from animals and insects alike. The threat of butterfly eggs is real and birds will peck your food to smithereens too. Originating from the woodlands of East Asia and North and South America, Hydrangeas are a popular garden shrub generally grown for their showy flower heads and attractive autumn colour. The most popular types of Hydrangea are the ‘mophead’ (Hortensis) and ‘lace-cap’ shrub varieties (Hydrangea macrophylla). Other species are also grown such as H. aspera with velvety violet, white and pinks, H. paniculata with its oversized conical flowers, and H. arboreus ‘Annabelle’ with the biggest ‘pom-poms’ of all. Hydrangea macrophylla generally come in hues of blue, pink, red, purple or white flowers, and the flowers often change colour as they mature.

Centres. White flowered varieties regardless of the soils pH remain the same colour. If you are unsure of your soils pH there are a number of soil testing kits available to purchase. Mophead or Hortensia varieties have large, spherical flower heads whereas lace-cap varieties have smaller, flat flower heads and both types can be dried for use in flower arrangements.

Soil Their colour is also affected by the pH levels of the soil, and consequently the availability of aluminium salts. Varieties with blue or pink flowers when planted in soils with a low pH (acid soils) will continue to produce blue flowers and those with a high pH (alkaline soils) will produce pink flowers. Blue varieties can be kept blue by using a colouring compound which are available from most Garden

hoW To CAre for hydrANGeA S Hydrangeas are best planted in moist, well-drained soils in a semi-shaded spot in the garden and with some

shelter from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting it is also best to add plenty of organic matter such as farmyard manure, garden compost or composted bark, or if it is a blue Hydrangea, plenty of ericaceous compost mixed evenly with the soil. There are many popular cultivars available. Some good performers are Hydrangea ‘Preziosa’ or pink Hortensia, with attractive changing flower colours, and H. serrata ‘Bluebird’ has delicate blue lace-cap flowers with a white centre. Also look out for the ‘New Generation Kanamara’ Hydrangeas which are robust and long-flowering.

Q.

Could you please advise me on which variety of perennials are good for giving warm colours to my garden?

A. Fiery-coloured flowers

may not appeal to gardeners with delicate tastes, but for many others they inject life and passion into the garden, reflecting the intensity and warmth of the sun. A single fiery-flowered perennial can brighten an otherwise bland boarder, while combining a few of them in mixed planting will create a riot of colour. I hope these perennials help you in your choice: • CroCoSMiA ‘lUCifer’ – a classic perennial, with bold clumps of sword-shaped, pleated leaves, and arching spikes of trumpet-shaped, bright red flowers in summer. Good for cutting. • GeUM ‘lAdy STrAThedeN’ (yelloW), ‘Mrs J Bradshaw’ (red), or ‘Borissi’ (orange) – these have slender, branching stems carrying flowers from spring to mid-summer. • heleNiUM ‘MoerheiM beAUTy’ – these flower in late summer and autumn on stout clumps of erect leafy stems. The flowers are bright orange with brown hearts.

Makeovers & Q. Maintenance Can you help? i have accidentally cut my wisteria down to its base. Will it grow back?

A. Wisteria sometimes takes four to five years to

flower when grown from small plants. Most are grafted so they produce flowers earlier, as plants grown from seed sometimes never flower. The old wood that you have left should start to produce new growth after a couple of weeks. Pick two or three new shoots and train them back onto the wall. You should use vine eye plugs and wire as trellis will be pulled down as the wisteria stems continue to thicken throughout the plant's life. As the stems grow let side-shoots form as this will produce the flowers early the year after. Feed with a high potash plant food which will help produce growth and flowers. Hope this helps!

• kNiPhofiA ‘royAl STANdArd’ – a robust perennial growing to one metre in height with narrow, dark foliage and stout stems bearing bicoloured spikes or bright yellow, tubular flowers opening from scarlet buds. • lyChNiS ‘MolTeN lAvA’ – an interesting, easy to grow perennial that forms a low bushy clump of bronze leaves, topped with large scarlet-orange flowers for several weeks. • rUdbeCkiA ‘GoldSTUrM’ – one of the best perennials with a long flowering season, it has erect stems bearing narrowly ovate, rough, dark green leaves and flowers from summer to late into autumn. The flowers are deep yellow with a dark brown centre, often called Black Eyed Susan! Enjoy your planting!

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. FOUR TASKS FOR TASTY TOMATOES If you grow tomatoes in a greenhouse July is when the first fruits should start to ripen. Well looked-after, tomatoes should crop through until the autumn so it’s important not to let up on the four key tasks that should ensure success: watering, ventilation, feeding, and side shooting. WATER WAY TO GROW A PLANT When grown in a growbag, pot, or container tomatoes will need regular watering, probably daily, unless the weather is cool. Make sure the plants don’t become saturated though. It’s very easy to upset a tomato by over-watering and too much water VISIT TONY'S GARDEN! for edible open Gardens day Tony will be opening his garden for charity as part of the National Garden Scheme. if you love his wise words and would like to see where he does all that marvellous growing, visit The Nursery, 15 knapton lane, Acomb, yo26 5PX, 1-5pm on 17th july, and 2-7pm on 20th july. Admission is £3 and there will also be refreshments!

can cause insipid, poor-flavoured fruit. I like to tilt my pots slightly before watering: if a pot feels heavy, even if the surface is dry, watering isn’t necessary.

PUTTING ON AIRS Ventilation is important. A greenhouse can easily become too hot and ‘cook’ the plants. I don’t use shading but keep all the vents open, even at night, as this helps to prevent condensation which can set off fungal moulds. I also have the doors fully open unless it’s very cool as this provides airflow and aids pollination.

BE A FEEDER Tomatoes growing in growbags or containers will soon exhaust the nutrients available. Using a liquid feed, applied when watering, is the easiest option to keep plants growing. A range of commercial tomato feeds are available. I use an organic based seaweed liquid feed, starting with one that has a high balance of nitrogen

to encourage the plants to grow, switching to one with more potash later in the season to encourage fruiting. The traditional advice is to start feeding as soon as the first truss (cluster) of tomatoes has formed, but I usually start feeding about four weeks after the plants were planted and continue twice weekly until early September.

A BIT ON THE SIDE Novice tomato growers are often nervous or neglectful about side shooting, but it’s important not to shy away from this if you want to avoid a thicket of growth and get good sized, well-ripened fruits. Most tomato varieties are ‘indeterminate’; that is they will continue to grow upwards on one stem as a ‘cordon’ if side shoots are removed. Side shoots are those that grow at the angle where leaves join the main stem. Just nip these out as they appear, but be especially careful with those near the top of the plant, making sure not to confuse the main growing point with a side shoot.

PICK US A WINNER Tomatoes grown at home should

LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARDS Incredibly, Poppleton Community Railway Nursery is celebrating 75 glorious years this year. If you have any photos, newspaper clippings, local stories, or memories of the railway nursery, get in touch – they would love to hear from you to add to their Heritage Open Day on 10th September. Email pcrn.info@yahoo.co.uk or call 797623. be far tastier than those you can buy. Sometimes, gardeners are disappointed with the flavour of their fruit. There are usually several reasons for this. As mentioned, overwatering is a common cause, but growing in a shady position without sun to bring out the full flavour won’t help. Picking time is also important. Tomatoes gathered in the evening after a sunny day, especially if eaten straight from the plant, will taste far better than those harvested early in the morning. And don’t pick too soon! Make sure the fruit is fully ripe to get the richest flavour.

Perfect Ponds

Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish. a timer mechanism that will feed the fish the amount you want at the time you want. Things to consider are the size of the hopper that holds the food (it must be big enough to last the time you’ll be away), and the number of times a day you want to feed; some models only feed once, while others a dozen times or more. If you buy one then it is worth setting it up for the week before you go to make sure everything is working while you can still tinker with it.

The holiday season is finally here and everyone is thinking of setting off on their annual trip to recharge and relax. If that includes you, then spare a thought for your pond and its residents before you go. Most important is: “who will feed my fish?” Asking a neighbour is what many people will do, and this can work well if next door have a pond and they know what to do. Often times though well-meaning neighbours will overfeed the fish, and a sudden increase of food can lead to fish illness or even deaths. GeT PoTTy My advice is to find a measure that holds a day’s worth of food, like a yoghurt pot or cut down plastic milk bottle, and put that with the food storage. Tell your volunteer to only give one pot-full each day and no more - that way you’ll come back to happy fish AND stay friends with next door! If all that sounds like too much trouble, or if you want your prize Koi to be fed three meals a day, you should consider investing in an automatic feeder. Starting at around £30, these sit next to the pond (or hang over it) and have

rts d a chat with Liz Robe Mum of two, Mya, ha out the rers Centre to chat ab Ca ’s rk Yo m fro ef Ke set. and Emma y it’s such a valuable as wh d an fer of ey th ice Young Carers serv “It’s estimated that there are over 18,000 carers in York alone, with around 1,300 under the age of 18”, says Emma Keef, Communications Officer are York Carer’s Centre. The charity supports all unpaid carers, but I wanted to find out more about what we can do to help the young carers of York specifically. They have 120 children and young people on the books. The carers centre do more than you might have thought: trips, youth clubs, one to one work for the highest need young carers, feeding into family meetings, working with schools to help them identify, and raise awareness of, their young carers, drop-in visits to schools, and contributing advice to government

policy. For carers aged between eight and 18 it can be tricky to find time to be a kid when you’re caring for a loved one, but Lead Officer, Liz Roberts, stresses that although not an easy job, it is a rewarding one. “A really important part of our service is seeing how positive a caring role can be. Young people often say that, although they would prefer their mum, dad or whoever to not be ill, it actually makes theie relationship really good. They learn lots of things, they learn that they’ve got a caring nature, and they learn lots of skills on the way. “I guess a young carer is a label, and sometimes labels are negative, but what we really want to do is for that to be a positive,” she adds.

The charity offers a range of services for young ones, from the weekly youth club and one off activities, to day trips out to places such as Flamingo Land or Rowntree’s Park. “We support unpaid carers of all ages; this is just for the young carers who are aged between eight and 18. It’s a break for them, and it’s an opportunity to meet other people who are also carers, which they perhaps don’t get elsewhere. Some of the young people tell us that the only time they leave the house during the school holidays is to go on the trips with us; everybody needs something to look forward to, and it’s really important for them to have their time to be a child,” Liz explains. Of course with any charity, for the

service to continue, and so help support as many young carers as possible, it relies heavily on donations and volunteers. The charity is always on the lookout for volunteers to help with arranging activities, chaperoning trips out, and transporting the young carers. As volunteers get a free DBS check, it’s hoped that they will be able to commit to helping out for around six months. For students going into social care, teaching, child care, or events management, it’s a great place to gain experience whilst providing a meaningful service to those who need it. Volunteers need to be over 18, have a keen interest in working with children, and ideally (although not

Money donated can go pretty far into making a young person’s day as you can see below: £50 – would pay for 10 young carers to have a day trip out at the Piglets in York. £100 – would pay for pay for 12 young carers to go the annual

‘Cultureshock Festival’. £250 – would pay for 10 young carers to visit ‘The Deep’ museum. £500 – would pay for a group of 10 young carers to go see the X Factor live concert. I completely agree with Liz about the importance of this service: “I think it’s just really important to have something that’s just for them. I think a lot of times if there’s an illness in the family, the focus isn’t on them, and as a person – a young person - it’s important to have positive attention. That’s what’s nice about our service; we don’t ask anything of any families, we ask them what they want and we try and help them.”  Visit www.youngcarerscentre.co.uk

essential) be able to help out with transport. This vital charity is raising funds so that York’s wonderful young carers can get a chance to be kids. People can donate online or send in cheques.

VICTORY FOR YORK NURSERIES! York Mumbler has reported that the campaign for fairer funding rates at York nurseries has been won. After negotiations with the Department for Education and York City Council, York childcare providers have secured better funding for working parents in the government’s Early Implementers’ Pilot from September. Providers are now being offered £4/ hour for all hours used by families eligible for the new 30 hours of funding for working parents.

Originally, the government offered a split rate for the 30 hour deal. Vanessa Warn, owner of Little Green Rascals and Deputy Chair of the NDNA York Netowork, said: “I am delighted that the DFE heard our Network members and have offered a rate that is better for nurseries and parents. At the end of the day we want to be a part of the 30 hour pilot to ensure its success and to learn each step of the way with valuable lessons before it is rolled out in 2017. There is more work to be done but this a positive start.”

Did you know that one in five people over the age of 75 have difficulties completing everyday tasks due to sight loss? It's true, and what is also true is that many of those people might not know about the help they could be receiving from the York Blind and Partially Sighted Society. The local charity has a special equipment and information centre on Rougier Street, where people with vision issues (and those who know them) can go along and see how their lives could be vastly improved and also discover what kind of help they are entitled to receive.  To find out more about what's literally in store, call 636269.

WHEELY GOOD STUFF Ah... bed. If you find it extremely easy to flop down onto yours each night (and then spring up the following morning) you might want to spare a thought for those who can't do so easily. Getting in and out of bed can be tricky for some, so it's great to see that Rodgers of York are on hand, offering a huge section of adjustable automated beds. Rodger's collection includes beds that can alter the position of your head, legs and hips, all operated by a wireless remote control. Some models even boast an under-bed floor light, allowing you to rise and pad across the bedroom floor without stumbling into the bedside table and disturbing your sleeping buddy. They stock the leading names in adjustable, modern and oh-so comfortable beds from the likes of Tempur and Mammoth, and their showroom is fully kitted out to show you the benefits.  To find out more call 610570 and visit www.rodgersofyork.co.uk

If you, like an increasing number of people in York, are getting into cycling, you might find one big and unfortunate obstacle – price. Bicycles can be bloomin’ expensive, eh? Fortunately there is one local charity fighting to get you ‘on yer bike’ with a range of superb low-cost cycles. The Bike Rescue Project accepts donated bikes, spruces them up, checks them for safety, and then sells them on at extremely competitive prices. Not only will you be getting a road-ready bike at a great price, you’ll also be receiving peace of mind that a trained mechanic has giving it a thorough safety check.  To find out more, and to see the great work the charity does, visit www.bikerescueproject.org.uk WANT To GeT iNvolved? Ever there for when your furniture needs are great, but your bank balance is low, the York Community Furniture Warehouse have been recognised for all their hard work with an award. Named the 'Reuse Organisation of the Year' in the recent Furniture Reuse Network's annual awards, the York Community Furniture Warehouse (which has branches in York, Selby and Scarborough) were praised for their valiant efforts following the December flooding of last year. “When news of the floods began to break, we knew that we’d be in the perfect position to offer assistance to households affected, but we had no idea of the scale of what would be needed” said Ruth Batty, manager of the store. “We co-ordinated the huge influx of furniture donations, and ensured that we could get help out into the community as quickly as possible.” Well done to all, and to peruse the store yourself (or donate some items!), visit www.communityfurniturestore.co.uk or call 426444.

We return to the hair department this month to keep our manes in tip top condition. We haven’t been disappointed: the luscious locks in the office are quite spectacular.

Ellen in sales says she is now a die-hard fan of the oil. She reported hair that felt soft, looked glossy and behaved itself when being styled. Krystal had a go on the intensive repair mask and was really impressed: “I loved the intensive repair mask; it smelt gorgeous and my hair was so much easier to brush after using it. Once I’d styled my hair it stayed glossy; there wasn’t a single dry end in sight!” iNTeNSive rePAir MASk: £27.50 | ProTeCTive oil: £23.50 | froM GoldWell SAloNS NATioNWide.

We sent her packing to try out the blonde restoring treatment and she came back to us: “Couldn’t have come at a better time; it took two washes using the treatment to make my hair come back to the ash colour I was after, but it definitely worked and I had that salon smell too.” £12.99 | AvAilAble froM booTS.

Studio Manager Zoe tried out the 7th Heaven mask: “This hair mask smelt like a tropical haven, and lasted until the next wash. NUTRITIONAL If you feel like the summer weather isn’t the only thing making you hot and bothered, stressed, and anxious, perhaps it’s time to talk to a friend of ours. Angie Doig-Thorne is a trained and experienced hypnotherapist and weight-loss expert who can help you get rid of all that unwanted stress and anxiety, to rediscover the happier, healthier you. Her Freedom Weight Loss programme has also been causing quite the stir of late, helping dozens of people to shift that unwanted bulk in a safe and fun way. Recommended by GPs, Angie’s programme is all about creating positive habits and lifestyle changes… not starving your body with an unhealthy diet.  To make positive changes to your mind and body this summer, call angie today on 489142, or visit www.yorkhypnotherapist.com

give golf a go Golf; it’s all about putting a small ball into a small hole that is far away, right? Well, yes… but it can also be a great load of fun when you throw some crazy golf, footgolf, and whack-happy driving range action into the mix. For an excellent kids’ party, get to York Golf Range, because as well as enjoying a party tea, the budding Tiger Woods can knock some balls around to their heart’s content, either on the range, or on the special footgolf course as well. So to score a hole-in-one with your child’s affection, book their party at York Golf Range today.  Call 499275.

THINKING

We can often receive conflicting advice about healthy eating. One minute butter is bad, the next it’s good; then we're told to drink lots of fruit juice for the vitamin C, then not to as it's full of sugar – how can you possibly know what is best to give your family? The Nutrition Clinic at the Northern College of Acupuncture on Micklegate can help. They offer up-to-the-minute nutrition and health advice for both adults and children, being staffed by students undertaking their MSc in Nutrition Science and Practice, while supervised by qualified experienced nutrition practitioners.

CONSULT THE EXPERTS During a consultation the student practitioner will spend time asking about your health history and current health concerns before putting together a personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan, tailored to meet your specific requirements. This is followed up with further meetings to monitor your progress, provide recipes and health information handouts, and discuss further recommendations as needed. With the school summer holidays on their way, this is a perfect time to think about nutrition support for your child or teenager’s health. Many common childhood health issues such as eczema, food sensitivities, fussy eating habits, weight gain and frequent coughs and colds can benefit from dietary advice and support. All the nutrition suggestions are designed to be practical and achievable – family life is busy enough without adding in complicated meal plans!  To find out more and to book an appointment call 343305.

FINDING SUPPORT

The next meeting of the York Haematology Support Group, for patients, carers, families, and friends dealing with blood cancers, will take place on 7th July, 7pm, at Huntington Working Men's Club. ASK THE EXPERT

HAIR & BEAUTY This month our resident beauty expert, Dr Saleen Zimri talks about non-invasive weight loss treatments. It is summer after all.

It’s common for people to worry about their weight during the summer months. Many people will try to lose weight and be successful. However some of us need a little help along the way. Here at Skin Doctor we offer a highly effective, but non-invasive, surgery free method of weight loss. 3D-lipo is probably one of the most advanced

machines of its type and offers a powerful new dimension in non-surgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite ,and skin tightening for both face and body. 3D Lipomed is a powerful and revolutionary new approach to liposuction which does not involve surgery. 3D-Lipo uses a combination of Cavitation (deep fat removal), Cryolipolysis (superficial fat removal), Radio frequency (Skin tightening) and Dermology (cellulite reduction) to destroy fat cells instead of merely breaking them up and releasing them into the body. CAviTATioN Uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells – great for body contouring.

DO YOU HAVE

CryoliPolySiS Uses a combination of electro and cryo-therapy, cryolipolysis freezes fat cells without affecting other body cells, between 20 – 40 % of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way and dissolve over time.

derMoloGy Vacuum skin rolling is used to reduce cellulite. Furthermore, where standard liposuction requires a lot of vigorous exercise to metabolise the fat cells after the procedure, the 3D treatment gives outstanding results without any exercise at all. We are commonly asked if the procedure is painful. It’s possible to experience some mild discomfort directly after each treatment; however there are very few risks or side effects compared to traditional liposuction. With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. HARROGATE FARMERS MARKET Cambridge Street; second Thursday of every month, 9am-3pm.

STATES OF T H E A RT

Think you know Indian cuisine? Trust us, you don't – at least you won't, not until you've dined at 29 States: The Indian Kitchen. Located right next to Clifford's Tower on Tower Street, 29 States will take your taste buds on a culinary tour of the sub-continent with Indian food quite unlike anything you've sampled before. The extensive menu explores Indian culinary history, and the team of dedicated chefs strive for excellence by using in-season, locally-grown ingredients, including organic, sustainable meat, fish, poultry, vegetables and grains. You'll find the classic Indian dishes that everyone has come to love (and crave late at night!), while new and modern dishes, served as a feast for the eyes, as well as the mouth, will excite and delight. Not only that, but the welcome you will receive will be as warm as New Delhi in the summer.  To peruse the menu visit www.29states.co.uk, and to book yourself in, call 636481

HELMSLEY MARKET Market Square; every Friday. MALTON MARKET Market Place; every Saturday. MALTON MONTHLY FOOD MARKET Market Place; 2nd Saturday of the month. SELBY TOWN MARKET Split across two sites in Selby town centre – Market Place and Micklegate; every Monday, 9am-3pm. SHAMBLES MARKET Off Parliament Street; 9am-5pm every day. SKIPTON MARKET High Street; Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9am-5pm.

Haxby might by many miles from the sea, but it is quickly becoming known as York's premier 'chippy tea' location... and these lot are responsible. Millers Fish & Chips on The Village, is a warm and welcoming restaurant with a modern and cosy feel. This little gem is hidden within a busy award winning fish and chip shop, right in the heart of Haxby. Not only does Millers boast a brand new and tasty menu, but they are also keen to let you know about something quite unique. Millers by Night is offering an alternative to the norm. With only a few tables available it has cosy and intimate atmosphere with a selection of fine wines and beers, as well as tempting treats, all cooked up by in-house chef James J. Workman. James won the Copper Sauce Pan Award for The Best Apprentice Chef in Hull and East Yorkshire, and awaits your verdict on his mussels in a garlic white wine sauce, goat cheese fritter, pan fried trio of fish, cajun salmon fillet, and home-made chocolate brownie to name but a few. The special bistro nights take place on Thursdays from 6-9pm from June, so to book your place (early, mind – to avoid disappointment!), call 769169 and visit www.millersfish.co.uk
