YORK LIFE

NEW YEAR, NEW ISSUE … same old rubbish! Ha! Only joking, we’re not rubbish. We’re awesome. And you’re awesome, too. In fact, everything everywhere is awesome and if you think differently... well, you’re okay with us. That’s our attitude for 2018, you see: positive. We have a feeling that the coming year will be the best on record since 8463BCE. Which was just a really cool, laid back year, apparently. We understand you might still be recovering from the craziness of Christmas, so rest assured that we’ve done all the hard work for you. Once again we’ve gathered together all the important stuff you need to know to survive January in York, from local happenings, events, and shows, to advice about your garden. The advice is: tidy up those

fallen leaves, you mucky pup! The neighbours think less of you. Obviously we advocate our readers keeping hold of each and every copy of YLL they receive, if only to show their friends from out of town how nice we have it here in York, but the Jan issue is definitely one to keep handy all year round. In these finely crafted pages you will also find a directory of useful local info, including important details for schools and the council, and key dates for the year ahead. We recommend keeping it in a sealed case in a safe, or renting a safety deposit box to store it and visit it weekly. Or, y’know, in the magazine rack or on the coffee table. Up to you. Whatever you do with us, have a great month/year.

YORK LIFE

and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

“There is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it.” Or so said Eleanor Porter in Pollyanna. Huh. Eleanor Porter evidently never had BT as her internet provider. Nor did she have an nonexistent unidentified item in the bagging area of a supermarket self-service machine. Nor did she fail to log in to a website because her email address wasn’t recognised, only then to be told that she couldn’t register because her email address was already in use on that site. No: Eleanor Porter evidently knew nothing of Beachy Head Moments.

THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN BE GLAD ABOUT

These are the admittedly minor but somehow unspeakable daily events which make you feel tired of life. A recent classic case in point involved my selfassessment tax return (an entire Beachy Head

10

Moment unto itself, really). Said tax return involved visiting Barclays on Pavement to obtain a year’s worth of bank statements because my online banking only lets me see one month (another BHM). As Barclays no longer has anything so straightforward as a nice row of desks with people behind them, I wandered around looking clueless until an itinerant member of staff asked if she could help me. Resisting the temptation to say “shoot me now”, I told her what I needed. She took me over to a Machine. My heart sank. I do not like machines, and they don’t like me.

They didn’t like the Barclays assistant, either, as this one refused to show statements. And so we went over to another machine. This one was more co-operative, and the Barclays assistant showed me what to do, then left me to it. All was well for, oh, about 25 seconds. Then of course the machine stopped printing. “General error”, it informed me. I summoned a Barclays youth. “It has a General Error,” I declared. He shrugged. “Well, I dunno what’s wrong with it.” He then ambled off. “The cash machines are being serviced later this week,” someone else offered. A one-way ticket to Beachy Head is the only solution. However, that involves Virgin East Coast, the source of innumerable BHMs. You would think it would be easy to return an unused ticket. After

Honours graduate of the York School of Charm, as previously mentioned in this noble publication) if I can renew my family railcard while I’m at it. “You need to fill in a form,” she snarls. I ask her which form it might be. “Oh, I’ll just do it myself,” she snaps. And then there was the North Yorkshire NHS vaccination form (only available online) which I had to fill in for one of my children. Or I would have done, if the “click here” part of the website had taken me to the form, instead of stubbornly doing absolutely nothing.

all, their new website is my new best friend (“wahey! You’re good to go”, it tells me whenever I book a ticket. Which makes me feel very slightly unwell). But no: returning a ticket means trying to find a postal address. Eventually, I ring them. “We are experiencing higher than expected call volumes”, the automatic message says. It says the same for the next four days, by when I could have walked to Beachy Head, never mind caught a train. I wonder if the station itself might be any better. No such luck. I make the mistake of asking the dragon behind the desk (evidently a First Class

Beachy Head Moments, though, aren’t just isolated incidents. For some people, the whole of January (and, possibly, February) would be one prolonged BHM. When I gave private tuition, it was a regular sensation: a lesson would start at 3 P.M. 90 minutes later, I would look at my watch, and it would be 3.03 P.M. Supervising children’s homework tends to have a similar BH effect (“you have been doing French since Year One. You are now in Year Nine. And you still don’t know the French for ‘mother’ and ‘father’?”) There’s nothing for it: a one way ticket to Beachy Head is the only solution to all life’s irritations. But hang on a sec: that might involve Virgin East Coast. Perhaps I’ll give it a miss for today. Happy January.

Dear Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.

Hey Daph, My flat mate gave up smoking last year. I’m glad for them, but now they’ve got an even more annoying habit that they can get away with doing indoors. Vaping. I’m sure that it’s still bad for them and I am sick to death of the living room being thick with fog and smelling like biscuits or whatever else they’re putting in it. J, Lawrence Street

HE WON’T STOP VAPING

People should be free to do as they please as long as it doesn’t affect others, but this sounds like it is affecting you. Ask your flatmate to keep their vaping to outside and their own personal space. There’s nothing wrong with you wanting to be able to see the TV and not smell biscuits in your own home. Try not to stew, if this is your biggest concern in life - you’re doing pretty well.

UNINVITED

Dear Daphne, My girlfriend is constantly ignoring PHUB-GATE me in favour of going on her phone. Its got to the stage where she’s even on it when we go out for meals or get into bed. When I try and speak to her, sometimes she doesn’t notice because she’s so engrossed. Its really starting to take its toll. I just want us to have a bit of decent conversation and not feel ignored. Anon, Wiggington The plague of millennials, phubbing (phone snubbing) is sweeping across the nation and it’s not ok. I feel your pain. Before you talk to your partner, make sure that you’re not equally as guilty of this crime, just because they’re on their phone when you want to talk to them, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen the other way round. If the phubbing is entirely one sided then a conversation is needed. What about phones away at the dinner table to encourage conversation? No phones at bedtime? You need a technology detox to freshen things up. Its easily achievable and perfectly realistic. Put the god damn phones away!

Dear Daphne, I’ve been seeing a guy for around 6 months and I really like him. The trouble is, he hasn’t really invited me to any social situations with his other friends, despite the fact that I can clearly see on social media there are other couples in his presence when he goes to these things. I understand its early days, but even casual nights out drinking or gigs and stuff - I never get an invite. I want to know if he’s serious and I want to meet his friends, but I don’t want to creep him out. What do I say? Anon, Acomb As I read this I had a passing thought, have you and this guy had the ‘what are we’ talk? Before you worry about meeting his friends I reckon

Well, firstly you could stop beating yourself up about it. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, overindulges at Christmas. So you ate badly and now you feel rubbish. That’s totally fine. We all get a little fed up sometimes and make decisions on a full stomach I.E eat better. The best attitude to adopt is this – ok I messed up yesterday, but today is a new day and I’m going to try my best again. Persistence is key with adopting new habits. Stick at it! CAPRICORN

22ND DEC - 20TH JAN

L to R: Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding, Elvis Presley, Martin Luther King Jr

A busy month which frequently crackles with excitement. A high degree of social activity, especially around the 2nd and 3rd, and then again with greater emphasis on the 13th and 14th. Family reunions look probable and anything that could be described as a “joint venture” has a bright green light going for it.Travel aspects are favourable, and while we could be talking about overseas jaunts, long distance car

journeys sit easier in my mind. Across this whole period there is great degree of delight to be found in emotional relationships, especially mature relationships in which no one has got anything to prove. Having said that, intimate moods and new romances are definitely going to have a role to play in the lives of younger Capricorns who do have something to prove!

AQUARIUS 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR

TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST MAY

A quietly confident mood propels you into 2018. You know where you’re at, you know where you’ve been, and you know where you’re going! Any changes going on around you should not come as any kind of surprise, and you’ll find it quite easy to slip into a few new ways of thinking. You become significantly more relaxed in all that you do.

You’ll not be displeased if January turns out to be a bit on the quiet side; it gives you chance to catch your breath and gather your strength for some of the fun and games that await you a little later in the year. The 9th or 10th will see you making some kind of “official” decision, and your social life gets a boost around the 18th when unexpected guests come calling.

A nice bright buzz to the beginning of the new year. Agendas are clear and confidence in all things is high. Emotional commitments in existing unions seem to go from strength to strength, and there are some tickles of romantic possibility for younger members of the sign, especially those in mid-late teens. Work routines are predictable, but secure.

A rather thoughtful start to 2018 as you re-evaluate certain targets and priorities. It is a peaceful process, made all the more worth while by a partner’s input and co-operation. Not a fantastic amount of career energy, and indeed, some of you may be deliberately taking on less so that you can concentrate on other things. Good travel aspects around the 13th.

GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN It will have been a busy and tiring

CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL A determined start to the new year, and you’ll be full of energy that makes sure that certain things get done! New work routines and career targets will be the focus for many, while other people will be concentrating on changing the nature of their relationships with their nearest and dearest. A lot of old fashioned ambition in the wind!

LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG January is a bit early to do the spring cleaning, but that’s certainly the mood of the moment – tossing out the rubbish and getting rid of the old to make way for the new. This attitude seems to be across the board, and you’ll take a great deal of pleasure and delight in decluttering your life as you focus on just a few priorities that really are of prime importance.

VIRGO 24TH AUG - 22ND SEP From a work point of view it is likely to be a slow start to the year and it won’t be until mid-month that you get a rush of impetus. In the meantime, some problem raises its head in connection

with damaged goods, and you might find yourself fighting some form of battle for compensation. Domestic and emotional situations seem stable.

YORK LIFE

festive season and as you cruise through January you’ll be inclined to put your feet up and enjoy a bit of a rest… And don’t feel guilty about doing so! You only have so much energy, and while other people make the usual demands on your time and goodwill, maybe you need to learn how to say “no”.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT A lot of Librans are going to be concentrating on relationships – finding them, building them and improving them. Career aspects perk up around the 11th or 12th, suffer a set-back around the 19th, then get a big boost on or around the 23rd. Finances probably a bit tight, so careful with your pennies. Some connection with politics seems probable. I’ll vote for you!

SCORPIO 24TH OCT- 222ND NOV A very satisfying start to 2018 as everything seems to fall into place for you. Social outlook is interesting with some new friends to be made, but it is the romantic and sexual agendas which seem to dominate most of your thinking. Frankly, if I were you, I’d concentrate on affairs of the heart and let everything else take a running jump!

SAGITTARIUS

23RD NOV - 21ST DEC

A really positive start to the year, especially if you’re looking for a bit more “me” time. Domestic routines and responsibilities are easily dealt with, and if not by the middle, then certainly by the end of the month you’ll be in a mood to spread your wings and enjoy some wonderful feelings of freedom and independence. Well, Heworth Retired Men's Forum might be right up your alley, as they host regular get-togthers at Heworth Without Community Centre with interesting guest speakers. On 9th January the group will hear from Dr John Wright and his talk on 'The Real Heroes of the RAF', while again on the 23rd Mark Sutcliffe will make a presentation called 'Minster Policing'. The group, which meets on those dates (and many others) at 10am, is open to any retired chap, living in Heworth or not. n If you would like to know more, call 423277.

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH:

THE MARKETS

Think of a market in York and your mind will flick to images of the stall holders and stalls of Shambles Market. It’s a great market, selling everything from fresh fish to laminated posters of Ryan Gosling reclining with his shirt off (y'know, the essentials). However, York's market as it is today is a relatively modern thing, and if you wanted to fill your grocery basket during medieval times you should prepare to do quite a bit of walking. Clearly our ancestors had never heard of a department store, or indeed a 'one-stop-shop', as many individual items for sale had their own specific markets, and these markets were dotted around the city. So, grab your basket, fill out your list, and follow our handy guide to a medieval York shopping trip.

THURSDAY MARKET What is now St Sampson's Square was once York's most ancient of market places. As the name suggests, it probably originally operated on Thursdays, but by the late medieval period the opening times had increased to Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday – typical market days in the city. Thursday Market was THE place to buy meat, as

well as other foodstuffs and also linen. The market was heavily regulated by the local authority, with tolls being collected from stall holders, and others being fined if their carts damaged the roads.

PAVEMENT MARKET Held on Pavement where Coppergate meets High Ousegate, Pavement Market was second only to Thursday Market in importance and size. It was also where local proclamations and punishments took place. Like Thursday, it was a general market of food and clothing, but the city corporation ensured that the same goods were not sold in both places. Corn was the main commodity in Pavement, and the opening of the market was announced by the ringing of the 'corn bell'.

HAY MARKET In need of hay? In medieval times you would make your way to The Shambles; an earlier version of the street's name was Haymongergate. However, by the 18th century all hay selling had moved to a market on Peashome Green, on the site now occupied by the shiny new Hiscox building.

LEATHER MARKET Leather items, for which York was nationally regarded, were originally sold in the 'Common Hall' (the Guildhall), before being relocated to an area in Thursday Market in 1626. Apparently the tanners and leather workers found the building to be unsatisfactory. Leather snobs.

FISH MARKET The fish market is also one of York's most ancient of markets, traditionally being held on Foss Bridge and first being mentioned in 1253. Some of the houses on the north side of the bridge were referred to as the 'fish shambles', and that side of the bridge was reserved for local sellers and 'freemen'. Meanwhile, on the south side near to Walmgate, 'aliens' or foreign sellers, were permitted to set up stalls.

BUTTER MARKET If you love a decent round of toast every morning, prepare to trudge up Micklegate. The butter market was held in the churchyard of St Martin's, which was always something of a controversial location. Many tried to get the market moved to Pavement, but it remained there until the 18th

PARLIAMENT STREET MARKET

YORK LIFE

century. Butter was also one of the most highly regulated of commodities, as sellers could easily cheat their customers.

Yes, Parliament Street, what many today consider the central street in the city, was created because of all of these markets. By the beginning of the 19th century both Thursday and Pavement markets were full to capacity and in need of expansion. The decision was made to unite the two spaces by demolishing the houses between them, therefore creating a long and wide street to be used as market space. The demolition work was so huge that an act of parliament was needed (hence the name) and the street was completed in 1836, creating one big mega-market. But even this had limitations, as in the 20th century Parliament Street was a major thoroughfare for cars. In the 1950s the decision was made to permanently move the market to the space behind The Shambles, creating Newgate (now Shambles) Market as we now it today.

LASTING EFFECTS... So although we now have only the one regular market, York has been permanently shaped by the markets of the past. Many of those thousands of people heading into the city each day to peruse the stalls and stock up their larders, often needed somewhere to stay and enjoy an ale after a busy day. Inns and taverns sprang up throughout York to accommodate them, and unlike the markets themselves, they stayed. So remember that the next time you're on a pub crawl, you dirty stop-out.

YORK LIFE GIG OF THE MONTH

! d e r i h You’re

This month I’ve been recruiting, it’s hard.

What’s up guys, its ya girl K here, informing you that I, Krystal Starkey, am now extremely responsible and important.

YORK CD AND RECORD FAIR WHERE: The Basement WHEN: 13th January 2018 10.30am - 4pm INFO: Plenty of collectable records, CDs and DVDs on offer plus bring your unwanted records and CDs for cash or exchange. It’s free to get in as well.

“How do I choose?” I wail into the office - provoking a gaggle of totally solicited but not entirely appreciated replies. With each bit of new advice, and with every candidate who’s great, it becomes increasingly difficult to choose someone for the job. By the time you read this we will have chosen a candidate to fill our Graphic Design role at YLL HQ, but right now I’m torn in the decision process; the next step is second interviews. Figuring out if you can spend 37.5 hours a week with someone off of a piece of paper and an interview seems highly unlikely. What are the

right questions you need to ask to figure someone out? How can I gauge if they’re reliable or hard working?

sink and kicking distribution Gary out on the regular (he works in there poor guy).

What we do is pretty unique too, so when people come, they’re not always local advertising experts straight off the bat. It’s about working out if they can adapt to our style of work, if they can cope with the workload and if they’re going to turn up everyday.

I’ve learnt a lot already, interviewing on top of doing your own job is distracting and time consuming. I spend a lot of my working hours going over interviews in my head, wondering what they will really be like once they get here, then panicking about my own workload - in fact this is the only time it’s actually helped my work to concentrate on the process.

It’s been a learning curve for me, I reckon I’m probably just as nervous as they are, I want to make a good impression, I don’t want to waste people’s time and I want to make sure that I’ve given a clear example of what it’s like to work here. I’ve been hastily polishing the kitchen/ office where we do interviews, shouting if people leave dishes in the

For those who experience nerves at interviews, just know that it’s pretty nerve wracking the other way round too and don’t be scared. We’re not setting traps or looking to trick you. Just trying to figure out if you’re an ideal fit for the job that we need doing.

STEP 6

We start our tour on Sim Balk Lane, beginning just as the road descends from the A64 flyover, heading into the village. • Why should you be wary of the first house you come to on your left?

Exit the churchyard back onto Church Lane and continue to the left. When you reach Bishopthorpe Road, turn right. • What is in operation at Bishopthorpe Palace?

Head left along Chantry Lane. • Why might the US president (whoever that is by the time you read this) feel at home down here? • What ex-monarch is remembered by Stableyard's post box?

STEP 7

STEP 1

land y l o h e h T

This month’s Treasure Hunt takes in the village of Bishopthorpe, a place shaped by the presence of a certain place and a certain religious job. Let’s explore, shall we?

Off road time. Take the footpath that turns to the left of the old St Andrew's chapel, now in ruins. You'll eventually come out by the river, which is nice. Mind your step as you walk and keep on going. • Sharp eyes needed here, soldier. Which Archbishop erected the crucifix in the ruins of the old church?

Continue along Sim Balk Lane to enter the village proper. • If you’re looking for the Temple, which road should you take?

But don’t. Instead, throw a left on Church Lane. • On which number lamppost is the bus stop? • What does one house along here have a view of?

Turn left again into the Church Hall car park. Walk along the path towards the church and stop at the base of the tower. Time for... READING GRAVESTONES! Woop! • How old was Arthur Holt when he died? • In which year was Ellen Jalland “released from suffering”? • For how many years was Peter Channing churchwarden?

STEP 8

Turn right onto Acaster Lane, and then left onto Main Street. • What implores you to “Keep us safe”? • Who is very welcome at The Ebor? • As you pass the Village Hall – which Archbishop gave the Reading Room?

STEP 9

YORK LIFE

You'll leave the river path near to York Marine Services. As you do, immediately turn right and walk along Ferry Lane. • What should parents warn their children of along here?

STEP 10 Keep on along Main Street • Which weekday is Bishopthorpe Explore closed? • Enter the Pinfold by the primary school. How many people lived in the village in 1801?

And you’re done... well, kind off. Those who would like to leave and head home, now can. But those who would like a bonus round of questions should continue up Copmanthopre Lane and turn right onto the Transpennine Trail.

Job Done!

• How high above the Martian plain is the peak of Olympus Mons? • How long is a day on earth? • What did the Greeks call the Sun?

Now we're really done. Keep on the cycle path and you'll come up by Askham Bar Park & Ride and Tesco. Well done, treasure hunters!

Now go forth and explore more! ANSWERS: 1: Guard dogs. 2: Lang Road. 3:, 10, Orchard. 4: 23 years, 1920, 5 (2004-2009). 5: CCTV, so watch it! 6: The White House, Victoria (VR). 7: Archbishop Maclagan. 8: “...the dangers and

H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N

THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

During my second year of university I had a parttime job. I won't mention which York business I worked for (although they don't advertise in this magazine, like losers) but my job was to sell horrendously over-priced suits to wealthy idiots. I wasn't very good at it and could fill several columns about my failings as a salesman. Highlights included sending potential customers to BHS for a suit that was “basically the same but £500 cheaper, pal”, and letting a customer off paying for the postage of his large order of tailored clothing, without realising he lived in Brazil. My time there was short, but I did have the displeasure of working over the Christmas period. My last shift before having a few days off over the Christmas break was on Christmas Eve; a day that I had always held in high regard, enjoying the general excitement of the day before we all celebrate the birth of Christ. Only joking, it was for the presents. Only the presents. However, that Christmas Eve 20 year old Howard was severely emotionally disturbed after his boss, at 3pm, just as the sun was

setting, and the carollers beyond the frosted shop windows started a-carroling, declared, “Right, shift all this festive crap, and get the Boxing Day sales stuff up!”

DREAMS, IN BOXES

And so, for the final two hours of the day, I had to pack Christmas away. All the decorations, the trees, the paper chains, the complimentary mince pies by the tie rack... it all got binned. The window display, which depicted festivelyarranged mannequins wrapped in expensive scarves and gloves made from the skin of possibly endangered species, was dismantled, and in its place garish signs stating SALE and ALL ITEMS REDUCED were erected. By the time I staggered

out of there at 5.30pm I was gutted. It felt as if I had packed away my childhood innocence along with all the decorations. (Aside: I say 'innocence', but by 20 I had definitely 'done stuff' with girls, possessed a collection of six stolen shopping trolleys, accidentally damaged a £5 million copy of Shakespeare's First Folio, and silently vomited in a taxi without the driver knowing, then just got out). The reason why I'm telling you about this, in this January issue, is because I don't want the same thing to happen to you. The January edition of YLL is very much about the new year kicking off and everything you have to look forward to in 2018. However, the chances are that you'll receive this prior to Christmas Day, or possibly even during that semi-surreal 'what day is it?' week 'twixt Chrimbo and the New Year. I didn't

HOWARD'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

This Christmas will be my 37th. I know, right! What is my secret? If there is one thing I've learnt about the festive period over those many years it is that all the best Christmasses happen on TV. Quite frankly, if your Christmas Day wasn't scripted by a team of over-worked and highly caffeinated writers, and then filmed in an American TV studio during August, it will be rubbish.

That said, it is possible to have an enjoyable Christmas by giving yourself a break and taking the pressure off. I think the true magic of Christmas comes in the small details, not the grand and sweeping gestures. Hiring a bloke with a white beard to climb onto your roof and shout Ho Ho Ho at midnight on Christmas Eve is okay, if he makes it down alive, but making the kids hot chocolate before bed will probably have a greater, and less terrifying, impact. As long as you're kind, thoughtful, and don't get annoyed by the people who seem not to give a damn about the whole thing, you'll have a nice Christmas. If you want, I genuinely don't care. Great. I think that was miles better than the Archbishop's Christmas Message from last month.

YORK LIFE

want you to reach for this issue, open it up, and be disappointed by the lack of Christmas stuff. And so, following an exceptionally long-winded and narcissistic introduction (only kind I do, baby), please enjoy...

The New Year; a chance to get out of bad habits and have a fresh start? No, not me, but York City Football Club. Surely 2018 must be the year the club finally sees light at the end of the tunnel? Or even a stadium at the end of Monks Cross? In fairness work has finally started on the community stadium, after what feels like a few decades' delay.

which is great, only we don’t tend to have many midweek games! A few performances on a Saturday would be most welcome, and what better start than to bring in the New Year with a New Years' Day home fixture against the league’s whipping boys North Ferriby United. The next home games after that are the back to back at Bootham Crescent against Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday 13th, and then Spennymoor Town a week later.

As for matters on the pitch, manager Martin Gray assures us that the players are fantastic Monday to Friday,

GETTING REAL It’s fair to say it’s been a tough few years following York City and I feel like writing to Jose Mourinho to see if he wants to have a trip to the Crescent to understand what disappointment really feels like after hearing his recent moaning after the Manchester derby. Claiming their noisy neighbours were over excited in their celebrations was a tad ironic given this is the guy who ran down the touchline at Old Trafford when he was manager of Porto and ran all over the pitch at the Nou Camp with his fingers on his lips when Inter Milan manager. He should try

being at Guiseley on a Tuesday night enduring an hour and a half delay for a floodlight failure and losing 6-1.

MUMS, EH? Often for this column I try to scour the internet to uncover humorous sporting stories I might not have come across. This time I found it was closer to home when my Dad told me that my mum was enquiring as to how good “I’m a celeb” star Amir Khan is as a boxer. Upon hearing my Dad’s response that he was pretty good but had a bit of a ‘glass chin’, my dear mum thought it was the result of some post fight operation.

What solidified the modern image of Santa was Coca Cola using him in their advertising. From 1931 to 1964 illustrator Haddon Sundblom was commissioned to develop advertising images using Santa Claus for Coca Cola, and over that period he took the evolved favourite ‘look’ for Santa .. red robe, white whiskers, sack of toys .. and between them they publicised Santa and made him so consistent that people used to write in and complain if he got anything ‘wrong’. Santa is based on a real saint, Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of brewers, students, pawnbrokers and repentant thieves among other demographics. He was a child of Greek parents and lived in what is now Turkey (not the North Pole) under the Romans. He once punched fellow christian Arius in the face for saying that Jesus wasn’t

30

MOD E RN MARKE TI NG F OR BUSY BU SIN ESSES

truly God and analysis of St. Nicholas’ remains show he also had a broken nose. He was wealthy by inheritance and was prone to secretly leaving coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. He also brought three pickled boys back to life, but .. those were different times. He took pity on the three daughters of a poor man who could not afford them a proper dowry, meaning they would likely end up as prostitutes. As each came of age, St. Nick secretly popped a purse of gold through their window. That’s why if you look for old Roman Catholic images of him, he is pictured with three purses or coins. These circles of gold were misinterpreted as oranges which is why you get an orange in your stocking. The name Santa Claus came from the Dutch word

Sinterklaas (itself a corruption of Saint Nicholas) which they brought to America when they established New Amsterdam. All of which is to illustrate what utter and convenient nonsense are most of the stories we live by. St. Nicholas went to jail. Was it for five years because the Roman Emperor was killing and torturing Christians? Or was he put there by fellow bishops for that punch? Three and a half minutes hard research on Google reveals a confusing picture. This is why we need bodycams. St. Nicholas is the chap who turns up in the village and starts rifling through the records of children’s behaviour to check they’ve been good enough. He sold an awful lot of Coca Cola and is on the hook for this annual shopathon. “We’ll forget about the jail and him being Greek and

concentrate on what works.” One of the easiest ways to trick me is to tell me something I expect. If my reaction is “I’m not surprised” I’ve learned to take a moment. We easily lean in the direction of our true beliefs. Here, the Santa Clause story has travelled the slalom of history, tested at every gate by marketers and people with issues to highlight and fortunes to make until .. here we are at nearperfection. To be honest, that’s marketing in a nutshell. We’re not really here to persuade. We’re here to find out what people want and organise ourselves to provide it. And once a year, it turns out, people want tubby, whitebearded, reindeer driving Santa. And just in case there is any doubt, I think I’ve comprehensively proved that Santa Claus exists. So I hope you’ve been good this year. John Allsopp is a freelance digital marketer at surgemarketing.co.uk. Find out what’s in the head of your perfect prospects at twittergrowbot. com. What we've learnt this issue MEDIEVAL SHOPPING WAS TOUGH ON THE FEET We all might just pop into Tesco to get the weekly shop these days, or indeed order online and let it all come to us, but it seems that buying 'your bits' in days gone by was altogether more involved. As we found out when researching medieval markets for the Time Travel article, you needed to hit up Pavement for your clothing, Foss Bridge for your fish, the Guildhall for your leather, and a church yard in Micklegate for butter. Effort.

DATE LINES ARE WEIRD

THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT BISHY No there's not, but Bishopthorpe is a very interesting place. We took a trek about the village this month for the Treasure Hunt feature, wandering around and finding lesser-seen details. The trail takes in muddy paths by ruined churches, busy pub-lined roads, a couple of graveyards (yes – we love reading headstones!), and even the distance from Mars to the Sun. No, you won't need a space ship, just a pair o' sturdy shoes or a bike. Enjoy, and mind you manners, as you'll be walking by a palace. Oo, a palace!

No, we don't mean a phone number you call to find someone to go out with (although, if you're a fittie, our number's in the contents page). We mean the international date line in the Pacific which decides what day, or, at this time of year, what year it is. Check out Sarah's Asides, because as well as the usual cheekiness and barely withheld rage, Sarah has gathered a few fun New Year facts, including one about which country gets to celebrate first.

IT'S STILL CHRISTMAS! It is! We're not sure when you'll get this issue, be it prior to the big day, or just after, but we want to make sure you still receive oodles of festive tidings from us. If you're one of the lucky few to bag a copy just before the 25th, feel free to use us to waft the smoke away from the detectors after your mother-in-law burns the roast potatoes, and if you get us just after Chrimbo, you're welcome to roll us up to swat away the flies gathering around that gingerbread house your nan got you. You will eat it all by New Year's, oh yes you will. For further evidence of our continued Christmas cheer, check out Howard's column in which he delivers possibly the worst Christmas Message we've ever read. That lad...

TORY-TRON 9000 In other Budget-related news, the Tories are investing in autonomous and self-driving cars. Money will be given to electric car manufacturers, and assistance given to those developing autonomous driving systems. We’re not sure, but there is a good chance that the only reason the Conservatives are doing this is so they can get rid of their human drivers and chauffeurs who cost them soooo much money. Plus, a robot driver would never complain or attempt to sue after being called ‘a pleb’, so we can see why they’ve made that decision. Besides, we’re pretty sure the government already has at least one robot at the wheel; we once saw Theresa May driving a car around Westminster.

WE’RE FINE WITH THESE FINES

DIESEL-OWNER DOWNER In the recent Autumn Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond revealed that diesel car owners could face increased tax, higher fuel prices, and also new kinds of fees. The plan is to tackle cars with higher emissions and invest in the Clean Air Fund across the country. However, if you’re a business owner suddenly worried that your van will suddenly become a hell of a lot more costly to run, the government is only applying these charges to cars, with Hammond saying “no white van man or woman will be hit by these measures”. The actual costs involved for everyone else will be revealed soon.

Since March of last year, when the penalty for being caught using your phone while at the wheel was doubled, more than £6 million in fines has been issued. The penalty, which includes a fine of £200 and six points on your license, has been issued, on average, to 149 motorists each and every day since. Although that seems like a lot of people still endangering themselves and other road users, the numbers are starting to fall, giving hope to the belief that the increased penalty is working. But, if this still isn’t enough for you, and you get royally annoyed at the sight of an idiot driver checking their Facebook while doing 40mph along Blossom Street, just search YouTube for ‘prank drivers who text’ to see morons get a fright. In altogether happier news, this is James Bond’s new car. The 2018 Aston Martin Vantage is an absolute beast, one we’re sure to soon see dashing along an Alpine mountain road, pursued by FOREIGN HENCHMEN! Actually, the new Vantage is not only aggressively gorgeous, it is also exceptionally high-powered, capable of reaching 60mph in just 3.5 seconds. With a top speed of 195mph, Bond will likely out-run those baddies, although the commercially available model, which will set you back a mere £125,000, doesn’t come with machine guns, flame throwers, or an ejector seat. Still, pretty nifty nonetheless. Orders are being taken now, with the Warwickshire-based company shipping the cars from mid2018. But you already know that, because you’ve placed your order already.

New Year, new home, realistic budget? We hear from Mel Collier of JDL... Now the melee of Christmas is over, many of us turn our thoughts to the New Year and what we want to achieve. If thoughts of a new bathroom are at the forefront in your mind, the most important thing I can say to you is budget... and budget realistically. A bathroom can be expensive and you only want to do it once and do it well. By using local merchants for our bathroom products we try to offer you the best solutions at the right price, but unfortunately too many times we come across people who have bought cheap products online and then have to buy again. My golden rules for buying a new bathroom are as follows: • DECIDE ON A REALISTIC BUDGET AND STICK TO IT Most installers will walk you through your budget and let you know if it’s achievable or not, but you also have to be sensible. If the products you dream of do not fit into your price range, look again and compromise. Here at JDL we will talk you through everything and if we don’t think your budget is realistic – we’ll tell you! • HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN As installers, until we start pulling

42

floors up, we never know what lies beneath. Nine times out of ten, we find nothing, but there is always that one time where we could come across something that needs rectifying. It’s important that you budget for work like this. As a good installer, we’ll show you the problem and the costs involved prior to any works taking place. It’s important that you budget for this eventuality, even though it may not happen. If at the end of the project, you have money left – bonus. • REMEMBER THE EXTRAS Any honourable installer will give you a price before any work takes place. Remember what this price includes; you will not only be quoted for the products and labour, but all the fittings, pipework and sundries that you never see that actually makes the products work. I hope this has helped anybody looking to start a project in the New Year. As Which? Trusted Traders we pride ourselves on straight forward, easy to read pricing. We’ll walk you through every step of the way with as much (or as little) input as you would like to give. So why don’t you give me a call! n Call JDL on 608350.

ANOTHER YEAR OVER, AND A NEW ONE JUST BEGUN... Just as the John Lennon song suggests, we are into another exciting year of appliance sales! So what’s on the radar for 2018? Well, primarily for us it’s going to be a year of consolidation as we continue to train up all the new colleagues taken on to cope with the volume of work at our new appliance superstore on Monks Cross Drive. Since we adopted an “internet price match promise” on popular lines across the store, we have seen a huge uplift in sales. My team love a challenge and they feel they are on track to match, and even better, the historic high bar of customer satisfaction we have set ourselves.

CLICK OR CARRY In response to the increased demand, I am pleased to say that we will always have available for either click and collect or cash and carry (or delivery and installation as required) some appliances that represent exceptional value for money. For

example we now stock an Ice King fridge at a wallet friendly £129.99, and a full sized, 1200 spin Beko washing machine at only £199.99. Even though these are budget friendly products, you can rest assured that when you buy from Todd’s you will still get our unbeatable backup service. Of course if you want to explore the many other options available we always have a huge selection of other great products on demonstration. Finally we look forward to assisting the great and the good of York to find their feet in the sometimes technically challenging world of the smart home. You may see our newly liveried van driving around as we visit homes helping to set up smart devices such as TVs, ovens, audio products and home WiFi networks. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about how these new breed of devices could potentially make your life easier. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2018!

SETTING the tone of the year ahead, Pantone has announced its colour of 2018 as Ultra Violet.

Described as complex and contemplative, the clues have been there all along: a sudden love affair with neon lighting, the purple hues in popular series such as Stranger Things and Riverdale, and there’s been plenty of head turning purple suits on celebs: see Harry Styles and Conor MCcgregor. The standardised colour matching system is seen as the authoritative voice in the design industry and shoppers can expect to see a lot more purple in fashion, interiors and further afield this year following the announcement. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute explains the decision: “We are living

in a time that requires inventivenesss and imaginations. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galacy, to artisitce expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” The purple is reminiscent of space, and the future and ledgends such as David Bowie and Prince.

of what’s needed in our world today’ as opposed to the usual reflection on how things actually are. It’s forward thinking instead of being in the moment, looking to better times. In short, it looks like Pantone has offered a more optimistic colour than we’ve seen in a few years and its probably because with the current state of affairs (I.E. Trump & Brexit) we really need it. INDOOR

GUIDE

Weather too frightful to get out there into the garden? Fret not, as we’ve gathered a few nifty indoor gardening ideas.

INDOOR ALLOTMENT Potatoes are a pretty tricky to grow inside, as are rows and rows and runner beans. Still, herbs are a cinch, and with this teeny tiny allotment set, you'll be able to grow your own basil, oregano, and coriander (and have a cool little shed for your cool little tools). n £19.99 from www. iwantoneofthose.com

LECHUZA DELTA SELF WATERING PLANTER

IKEA HYDROPONICS SET

Phew, thank all the gods for this one! If you only do well with outdoor plants because the rain remembers to water them for you, get a Lechuza planter. With a special reservoir inside, the plant will water itself. n £14.99 from www.lechuza.co.uk

Who knew, right? As well as wonky furniture missing vital screws and parts, Ikea also sell hydroponics kits. With this one, named KRYDDA, obviously, you can grow you own plants indoors, without the need for soil. Unless they forgot the soil by accident. Tee hee. n £62.50 from www.ikea.com

AZTEC CUBE TERRARIUM Wow your guests with this gorgeous cuboid terrarium. Grow something rugged in there and it should look after itself for quite a while, while you busy yourself with phrases like, “Oh, this old thing?” and “It's so much effort!”. n £64.95 from www.notonthehighstreet.com

STANDING BRASS PLANTER This very noble brass planter, set on wooden legs, would look great as a home for your favourite house plant. Or, if you forget the water it, a splendid plant coffin. n £120 from www.coxandcox.co.uk

Winter

Flowering Shrubs

The winter months may seem like a gloomy and barren time of the gardening year, but there are many colourful and distinctive winter flowering shrubs to brighten up the season, many of which have the added bonus of being highly fragrant. Viburnum tinus is a hardy, evergreen shrub growing to approximately 2.4m (8ft) and produces clusters of sweetly scented creamy-white flowers in autumn and continues throughout the winter until spring. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ is a deciduous shrub growing to a similar size, producing clusters of very fragrant, tubular deep pink

flowers from November until around late February. Some older, mature specimens also have interesting cinnamon coloured peeling bark on larger stems. As an added bonus, a good show of autumn foliage colour is also produced.

FESTIVE Sarcococca, otherwise known as Christmas Box, is a smaller evergreen shrub with dark glossy foliage and as the name suggests, begins flowering around Christmas time and continues well into the early spring. While the small white flowers are not very showy, the incredible sweet vanilla fragrance that they produce is hard to beat. The compact size makes many Sarcococca ideal for growing in containers and they can easily be moved to your front door during winter to allow you and your visitors to enjoy the fragrance.

One of the most popular winter and spring flowering shrubs are Camellias, providing a bright splash of colour early in the season. Although they require acidic soil, they are easy to grow in pots using ericaceous (acidic) compost. Camellias are naturally woodland plants, that grow best in shelter and light shade although with careful watering they can be grown in sunny positions, but care should be taken to avoid east facing aspects, as early morning sun on frozen buds in winter can cause them to fall prematurely. Camellias prefer free-draining conditions, with plenty of organic matter such as leaf mould incorporated into the soil to ensure they never completely dry out.

GOOD FORM Mahonia is another large, hardy evergreen, growing to around 2.4m – 3m (8ft-10ft) that have glossy holly-like, prickly foliage and a statuesque form, making them ideal for the back of a border. The flowers are produced in clusters of long, sweetly scented spikes from November until February. The most popular forms are ‘Charity’, which produces buttercup yellow

flowers, and ‘Winter Sun’ which produces slightly deeper golden spikes. Hamamelis, more commonly known as ‘Witch Hazel’ produces colourful ‘spidery’ flowers in shades of red, orange and yellow from winter until around mid-February, again these are sweetly scented. They are a little bit more demanding to grow, requiring a moist, but free draining soil in a semi-shady situation. They are ideal for growing in large containers allowing them to be moved closer to the door whilst in flower and repositioned into semi-shade during summer. Other easy to grow winter flowering shrubs include Erica carnea varieties (Heather), Daphne mezereum and Jasminum nudiflorum (Winter Jasmine).

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Imagine a garden filled with delicate scented flowers throughout the darkest winter months. Such pleasures are easily realised by growing some of the winter-flowering shrubs. Positioned close to an outside door, or along a well-used garden path, the fragrance will be easily appreciated. These shrubs will be a source of enjoyment for weeks on end. Others may be grown simply for the effect of foliage. Evergreens are valuable at all times of the year; never more so than in wintertime. Variegated leaves, particularly, glow when caught by the rays of a weak sun and look wonderful seen against a dark background. Euonymus ‘Silver Queen’. The creamy-white variegation has a wonderfully wintry appearance which, later in the year, would be a perfect cool foil for hot perennials. For golden variegation, tinged bronze-pink by cold weather, grow the smaller euonymus ‘emerald ‘n’ gold’. Many hollies will lend themselves to make large structural plants. Ilex ‘Golden King’ will give you bright gold against a dark green leaf. Daphne ‘Odora’. Nothing can compare to the sweet delicate perfume of the daphnes: lovely, slow-growing shrubs, ideally suited to small gardens. Sarcococca ‘Confusa’. Edge a path with this Christmas box to enjoy the sweetness of its small

white flowers all winter long. Pieris Japonica ‘Mountain Fire’. The new shoots of intense scarlet make this an exciting shrub to include in a winter border. It needs acid soil, mind. Hayamews X InterMedia ‘Pallida’ has spidery flowers that are heavily scented and bloom on bare branches of the Chinese witch hazel in the first weeks of the year. This is a shrub deserving of patience and space, for it is very slow growing and will take many years to reach maturity.

Q.

Could you please help? I would like some winter colour from branches and stems from trees and shrubs. Could you recommend some for my garden? The bark of many trees is attractive or interesting when examined closely. But some trees have coloured of peeling bark that is especially ornamental. Others have coloured or unusually twisted shoots that have visual appeal, particularly in winter. Acer Griseum, or Paper Bark Maple, is famous for its peeling, papery orange-brown bark. This maple has the characteristic three-parted leaves that turn orange-red in autumn. The branches are ascending at first, spreading later. It is excellent for growing in

a border or large lawn. Acer Sango Kaku is one of my favourite small trees. In their first year, the winter shoots of this stunning Japanese plant, borne on upright branches, are an attractive coral-pink, darkening later. The pretty lobed leaves are orange-yellow in spring, mature to green, and then turn yellow in autumn. Betula Utilis ‘Jacquemontii’ or Himalayan Birch. This strong-growing birch is popular for the white bark of its stems and branches. Its leaves turn goldenyellow in autumn. Prunus Serrula ‘Tibetan Cherry’. Its mahogany-red, polished and peeling bark makes this one of the most popular of cherry trees. Small, inconspicuous white flowers are produced in spring. Salix Babylonica Tortuosa. Erect when young and spreading later, this willow is easy to recognise. Its long, twisted branches and shoots are clothed with narrow, contorted leaves, When the branches are bare in winter, the dramatic outline of this tree is very striking. Hope that helps!

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

TO DIG OR NOT TO DIG? TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.

Like many vegetable growers, I dig most of the plot over with a spade in the winter. I do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, on some of my heavier ground, it helps to loosen any soil that has become compacted. With the help of winter frosts the clods thrown up by digging readily crumble in spring to give loose and friable soil just right for sowing and planting. Secondly, digging makes incorporating the strawy manure I tend to use for some crops far easier. Spreading it on the surface doesn’t always work – digging it in avoids the plot becoming a giant cowpat. Thirdly, digging enables me to bury or remove any weeds, especially interlopers from the edges such as couch and bindweed.

It is this tidying and preparing for the next growing season aspect of winter digging that I especially like. Another reason I dig is that it’s really enjoyable! That might seem perverse to more laid back gardeners, but spending time on a winter’s day doing a bit of vigorous digging to keep warm is both satisfying and good exercise. I’m sure digging is just as beneficial for keeping fit as going to the gym. It’s certainly more useful and productive.

YA DIG IT? Although I like digging, I do recognise that it has its downsides. Inverting the soil through digging is hardly a natural process. There is inevitably disturbance and some harm to soil life – however careful there always seem to be a few worms that get chopped by the spade. Soil left bare by winter

digging, especially if light or sandy, can be vulnerable to structural damage by heavy rain. Nutrients can also be lost through leaching. And, of course, not everyone is physically able to dig. These are some of the reasons that there are an increasing number of gardeners who advocate ‘nodig’ growing. The leading British proponent of this method is Charles Dowding who has cultivated vegetables in this way for more than 35 years. Charles has an extensive website packed with information on no-dig growing at www. charlesdowding.co.uk. He has also appeared on BBC’s Gardeners’ World and written a number of books.

CALL A SPADE A SPADE If you’d like to learn more about nodigging, Charles will be in York to give a talk entitled No Dig Gardening on

Astek Garden design & build

Creating your dream garden

Bespoke, hand drawn designs. Classic and Contemporary gardens. Paving and Stone Walling, Brickwork, Terracing, Planting Schemes, Complex and Challenging spaces, Pergola’s and Summerhouses. Entertainment areas, Driveways, Raised beds, Low maintenance ideas, Lighting, Irrigation, Lawns.

Tuesday 30th January. The event is organised by St. Nicks Environment Centre and will take place at the Central Methodist Church, St. Saviourgate. The talk starts at 7pm but there’s also a seed swap arranged by Edible York from 6.30pm. Admission is by donation on the day or £5 in advance for a reserved seat. For more information see stnicks.org.uk. This promises to be a fascinating talk giving lots of food for thought for the new gardening year. I’ll certainly be going along and hope to learn a lot. That’s not to say I’m expecting to be ‘converted’ to no-digging. It would be hard to change the habit of a lifetime and put down the spade. So I’ll probably continue to dig, but sparingly, conscious that the soil requires careful husbandry whatever cultivation method is used.

YOUR FAMILY

Sarah has something to say. Just keep it to yourself, will you? Happy New Year! (Now imagine me awkwardly leaning in for a hug, then you going for a kiss, then me pulling back and laughing nervously, then both of us settling for a disappointing handshake). For me, New Years has always been a bit of an odd time. There is a lot of pressure to treat it like THE party night of the calendar; that if you’re not partying hard and slurring your countdown from ten, you’re somehow a party-pooper square lame-o. Well, you’re not. You’re a nice person who clearly isn’t all that impressed by numbers changing. Don’t get me wrong: some date changes are worth celebrating. When 1999 became 2000 I partied hard. Yes, it was inside an underground bunker as I was a tad nervous about the Y2K issue, but I had a great time with those military isolationists, conspiracy theorists, and the pizza delivery guy who got accidentally locked in with us.

from Christmas.

FACT ME, BABY One thing about the New Years that really interests me, is how other people celebrate it across the planet, and how it has been celebrated in the past. So, if you definitely aren’t hitting up a club come the final night of the year, sit back and let me drop some fact-bombs onto your brain. • The first known celebrations of the New Year took place in ancient Babylon, 4000 years ago. Their year started on the first full moon following the spring equinox. So they wouldn’t have frozen their bums off standing outside the Minster at midnight in December. Smart. • The Romans set the first day of March as their New Year’s Day, as that was basically the first day back at work for the senators following the winter break (they had two months off, lucky toga-wearing sods).

• The ancient Persians gave new year gifts of eggs, which symbolised productivity for the coming year. I wonder what they gave at Easter, then? • Auld Lang Syne, the traditional New Year’s Eve song, was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788. The title translates to ‘time goes by’, and I always wish it would do quicker, when drunken relatives are grabbing me to dance and sing along with them.

Holiday time! Come on, why not, eh? If you're looking to defeat the January blues, why not start planning your next sunny getaway? If you'd like to make some holiday plans, we know of no better people to help you than the travel experts at Quartz Travel. Reopening after a short break, the award-winning travel agents, based in Heworth, are back to help you find, plan, and afford your next holiday, trip, or adventure. As well as that, the team are also looking for new members to bolster their ranks. If you have an interest in travel, and love working in a customerfocused environment, get in touch. n To find out more, both about the available positions, and that welldeserved holiday, call 411188.

• Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean is the first nation on the planet to celebrate the New Year, while American Samoa is amongst the last – despite Samoa being further to the west. Because maps are weird.

SO... Whatever it is you’re doing, I hope you have a lovely time. If it’s booze, singing, and kissing randoms... go for it. If it’s watching the telly and turning in at 10.30pm, bless your socks.

• January was named for the Roman god Janus, who apparently had two faces. Makes sense; in January I usually have two credit cards worth of debt to pay off

ROXY. This cheeky lass loves to play and dash around her pen, bashing her catnip mice and scooting around after her ping pong balls. Roxy is quite frustrated being all cooped up and is longing for a spacious new home where she finally stretch her legs. MIKE. This lovely kitty was living rough for a while before he was taken in. Mike is a sweet and affectionate young lad once he gets to know and trust you. He’s the type of cat that’s going to need a nice quiet home where there are no other pets. n Call Cats Protection on 760356 or visit www.cats.org.uk a huge wealth of help and support available and lots of tips and advice to share. DAMON. Damon went to the centre after his needs were not being met. Damon can be slightly cautious when meeting new people, especially men, as he was sadly under socialised when young. They are looking for adopters who have experience with owning the husky breed. CONNIE. She was found running around with another rabbit, which unfortunately was unable to be caught. Connie is still settling in but is slowly becoming more confident and more interested in what the centre has to offer, greens and treat wise. n Call RSPCA York and District Branch on 654949 or visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk

plenty of ways around that. The charity Whizz-Kidz could help with the likes of wheelchairs and mobility devices that might not be available via the NHS, and Go Kids Go! provide wheelchair skill courses.

• SLEEPING. Many disabled children might experience issues around sleeping, which will then have an impact on the rest of the family. Your GP could recommend you to a sleep therapist, or even a psychologist, while a carer's assessment could see you, as the carer, get short breaks away from caring for some uninterrupted sleep.

• COMMUNICATION. If your child has difficulty speaking and communicating, it can cause a lot of additional frustrations and problems. A wide range of alternative communication methods can be used, and your GP could recommend a speech therapist. n For advice on these, and any other caring issues, contact Carers Direct on 0300 123 1053, or visit www.nhs.uk and search for Caring.

Embrace... a student ‘Embrace England Language Holidays’ was created in 2009 and provides short and long term educational opportunities for German students aged between 13-18 to study in York. Around 300 German students now visit annually to study English at the University of St. John for two weeks with some students returning to study A levels at Huntington School. All of the students are hosted by local York families who provide full board accommodation and are recruited by ‘Embrace England Host Coordinator’ Paula Pidd. Paula is an experienced host of both short and long stay students and her last long term German student, Julius Backhouse, originally came to ‘Embrace England’ as a 13 year old and returned for three summer camps before starting at Huntington School to complete his A levels. He is now at Oxford University. “Julius shows you what is possible with ‘Embrace England’ and a key factor of his success was the care and support provided by the host families,” says Paula. “I am continually looking and recruiting for hosts who can provide this type of care and support,” said Paula. For the short language holiday stay each host has two students per room and ‘Embrace England pay £19 per student per night. For the long term stays £500 is paid to the host per month, per student. n Interested hosts can contact Paula on 07864860260 or email her at paula@embraceengland.co.uk

- A piggy partner If you have a child aged from 18 months to five years, there is more than a good chance that they know who Peppa Pig is. If they do, and if they get giddy at the sight of Peppa and co., then Move with Peppa will be right up their alley. Move with Peppa is an interactive activity class, created using the stories from the TV show. Kids and parents will lose themselves in the magic of Peppa Pig, learning the importance of physical literacy. The classes are designed to build motivation, physical confidence, coordination, balance and agility through a variety of story-led games and activities. n Beginning in early February, you can enquire about, and book, you and your child's place in the classes by emailing laura@movewithpeppa.com Find our more about what Move with Peppa is all about at www.movewithpeppa.com

Winter Watch

BY 'ECK, IT'S COLD OUT THERE. BUT THERE IS STILL PLENTY TO SEE IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH. The year might just have started, but already some mammalian friends are starting to wake from hibernation. You might see the odd hedgehog about your garden this month, as they tend to have a search around for food during relatively warmer spells before returning to their hidey-holes. Leaving dog food out for them is a great idea (although you can actually buy hedgehog food from pet shops), but don't give them bread or milk as it doesn't agree with their systems. Oh, you might also see increased fox activity, as the cunning hounds spend more time around humans, foraging for food. As most of their natural food sources have now been exhausted, birds will need as much help as possible. Make sure your bird feeders are stocked up, and be sure to use a kind that prevents cats, squirrels, and pigeons stealing the grub. Leaving scraps on bird tables is okay in January, as there aren't any small chicks in nests who might ordinarily choke on large pieces of food. Fatty foods are best, like seeds and fat balls – again, all available from your local pet store. Also, don't forget to keep your bird bath free of ice.

BEST WORKOUT

1. EAT

3. PLAN

There are recent studies that prove that exercising on an empty stomach can be beneficial in the old fat burning department. However, if like us, you feel incredibly exhausted after just five minutes of cardio, it’s best to fuel up before your workout. If you’ve got an hour before you’re about to smash the gym, grab yourself some carbs with a side order of protein. Examples include a slice of toast with peanut butter or a couple of crackers with a smudge of cheese. If you haven’t got as much time, try and grab a light snack such as a banana or yoghurt.

You’ve bought the gear, eaten the right food and the next thing you know you’re in the gym staring vacantly at a cross trainer wondering where on God’s green earth you’re going to start. This is where planning comes in. Plan an exercise routine before you hit the gym so you know where you’re headed. Include both cardio and strength training - if you get stuck for inspiration visit www.pinterest.com to get you started. Preparing a playlist in advance on your phone can be hugely beneficial and help you really get into your workout. Go for upbeat dance or rock tracks that make you feel motivated.

2. SLEEP Sleep is so important - no one will work out successfully on a few hours sleep. It’s important after your workout to get lot’s of rest too, it’s when your body does the majority of its repairing - making those muscles grow.

ASK THE EXPERT

MOLE REMOVAL Q&A This month resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks mole removal and answers any questions you might have. Moles are removed for both aesthetic and medical reasons. While some may see their moles as a welcome addition to their skin, some of us find our own moles unsightly, and endeavour get rid of them. With Skin Doctor, we use a variety of methods including shaving, cauterising and surgically excising to quickly achieve the best cosmetic results with little to no scarring.

Q.

Will I have to have stitches?

Q.

Q.

How is a mole removed?

I am concerned my mole has grown in size

We only carry out mole removal for cosmetic reasons. If you are concerned about a mole, please visit our GP first as he or she may want to test the mole first for melanoma (skin cancer). Any worrying signs, such as bleeding, itching or a change in size of shape, should be investigated by your GP.

Q.

Is mole removal treatment painful?

Before a mole is removed, the area will be cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic meaning the treatment itself will not be painful. Some people do find that anaesthetic injections can be slightly uncomfortable, especially if the injection is on or near the nose.

If you are having a mole removed because it looks unsightly or it is a nuisance, for example, because it catches on your clothes, less tissue will need to be removed and you may not need to have stitches. Your surgeon may just shave off the mole so that it is level with your skin and the wound may be cauterised to close it.

After the area of skin has been cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic, the surgeon will use a scalpel to excise (cut) the mole. It will then be sent to a laboratory to be checked for signs of melanoma. The area will then be cauterised or stitched.

Q.

How long does mole removal take?

The whole procedure takes only a few minutes and is quick and relatively painless. There is no downtime and you can continue with your daily routine. You may experience some soreness once the anaesthetic wears off but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service.

G R E AT S C O T T ! Anyone for award-winning fish and chips served by award-winning people? Of course you are, therefore get yourself to Scott's Fish and Chips at Bilbrough on the A64. Those frying experts are joyfully reeling from recently being declared the Retail, Tourism & Leisure Business of the Year at The Press Business Awards. It was a David and Goliath situation, beating the likes of The Principal Hotel and Continuum Attractions, who own York's Chocolate Story, to the top spot. “We didn’t think we stood a chance of winning this award,” commented the chippy's Managing Director, Tony Webster, in regards to the competition. “Being shortlisted in this category was an accolade in itself – but to pip both Continuum Attractions and The Principal York to the post was simply unbelievable. “It was a fantastic evening and winning was the icing on the cake. We were on cloud nine for the rest of the night and are only just coming down.” The accolade came hot on the heels of both their

Bilbrough and Helmsley restaurants being awarded the TripAdvisor International Excellency Award for the fifth year running. Wowzer. To see what all the fuss (fish) is actually about, get to Scott's and sample a meal for yourself – they do more than just fish and chips. n To peruse the menus, visit www.scottsfishandchips.co.uk
