YORK LIFE

WALKING WITH

THE WANDERER Askham Richard and Bilbrough

Just to the north of the busy A64, lies one of the most varied areas of countryside to sit within a few miles of York. Starting from the green at Askham Richard with its duck pond, this walk uses lanes and tracks to teach Bilbrough. The later stretches offer striking views across the fields to the distant Minster. It would be possible to divide this walk into two separate walks by turning left at Direction Point 3 (if starting from Askham Richard) or by turning right at Point 6 (if starting from Bilbrough). It is also possible if you start by bus from York.

Is This Walk For Me?

Although this is a short walk, there are a few minor challenges. Some paths are lightly trod and unsigned. There are also a number of stiles and a couple of short climbs. Cattle may be grazing in the field beyond the avenue in Direction Point 2. Some of the walk is along (mostly quiet) roads. The route alongside the A64 is on a wide cycle/foot path away from the traffic. Mud is possible on the field paths.

Getting There

The recommended start point is Askham Richard near the Rose and Crown pub where there is roadside parking. If you’re using public transport, the best option is to take a Coastliner bus from York Station to Bilbrough services. Walk back from the bus stop and cross the flyover, then turn left on the cycle/foot path on the opposite carriageway to start at Direction Point 5. Bus 37 also runs direct to Askham Richard and Bilbrough several times-a-day (not Sunday) from York station.

Refreshments

At the time of writing, both the Rose and Crown in Askham Richard and the Three Hares in Bilbrough are closed. There is a Greggs outlet in the service area alongside the A64 at Direction Point 4.

What To See

The main historical feature on this walk is the Fairfax Tomb in Bilbrough Church. Otherwise there’s the countryside to enjoy, plus the views from the minor peaks either side of Bilbrough.

12

Askham Richard and Bilbrough Time: 2 1/4 hours Distance: 5 miles

1. With the Rose and Crown pub

behind you, go right on the road. Bend left at the end of the pond and leave the main road to the left on Mill Lane. Follow this hedged lane, which carries virtually no traffic, for about 600 metres until it bends left to a road at the end of a small copse.

2. Turn right and follow for about 350 metres, ignore a right turn after about 300 but 50 metres beyond this, turn left on an unsigned road. Continue, passing The Normans weddings venue. About 200 metres after this, where the road bends right, go left into a field (currently protected by a low log barrier) on an unsigned footpath. Head towards trees and pick up a narrow earth path running between them. Walk through the tree avenue, keeping left as it reaches its end at a low stile. Climb over the stile, then turn halfway to the left towards the right of a solitary tree until you reach the crest of a hilltop. Continue along the grass following a faint path towards a gate that is to the right of a short wall. Continue through the gate on an enclosed track to a road. 3. Turn right downhill. Stay on the

quiet road, ignoring a right turn, until you see a house on the right. Go through the double metal gates opposite the house to follow an unsigned grassy bridleway that is

running between the hedges. Remain on this path, which eventually opens out on the right, until you reach a T-junction with a crossing track. Turn left and follow this for about 400 metres to reach a pond, houses and barns, and the A64 dual carriageway.

4. Turn left on the footpath/cycle

track (if using the Coastliner buses the return stop to York is here). Continue past the services complex.

5. About 150 metres beyond this, look

out for a hard-to-spot unsigned stile in the hedge on the left (it’s directly opposite a ‘H’ hydrant sign on the other side of the dual carriageway). Go over the stile and walk ahead with a hedge to your left, soon climbing a short slope. At the top of the field turn right and follow the wood edge to the left around a corner by a telegraph pole. Continue through a redundant barrier/stile but 30 metres beyond this, go left through a gap. Next follow the obvious path over some rough grass, then head into trees. Squeeze through a gap in the churchyard walls to cross the yard and reach Bilbrough’s main street.

6. Turn right down the street. At

the end turn left. Where the road straightens after a right bend take the signed bridleway on your left to continue between hedges until you reach an open area with a seat.

to the right of a large tree. Continue along the left edge of fields going over two stiles. Just before a lone tree ahead of you, follow the path left as it goes down a few steps to drop into a lower field. Go ahead, with a hedge to your right, downhill along the field edge. Maintain the same direction in the next field with a hedge still to your right until you reach a road.

8. Turn right on the road. In 250

metres turn left towards Askham Richard. Continue by the roadside trees to the village green and start-point.

Horoscopes STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: CAPRICORN

BY AST RO LO G IST

better! A new friend made between the 20th and 24th sparks some romantic interest, and if there are some interesting invitations around this time, don’t be afraid to say yes.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN In my cynical old age I’m not too keen on that word “romance” but for a want of a better word, this should be a very romantic month for many Capricorns, and even Old Fogies like me should find themselves enjoying AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

There is a stubborn streak in some members of the sign which only really comes to the surface when you feel that you are being pushed into a corner. Well, that stubborn streak is strong throughout January, and there are times when you are going to say “no” to people who expect you to say “yes.” If this raises a few eyebrows it is an indication

a greater quality of warmth and understanding in relationships. A slow start to the year where jobs and careers are concerned, but with the tempo picking up from the 18th or 19th onwards. Perhaps not a bad time for some kind of financial review. that there are a few eyebrows which need to be raised.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

A new year of targets, ambitions and optimism— will emerge. You’ll say to yourself “it doesn’t matter where I’m going as long as I know I’m going somewhere!” If this causes some impulsive behaviour, it’s no bad thing, and if it pushes you into taking a few risks, this is even

Rather a strange and moody start to the New Year. You look back over the last few years and assess what you have achieved and balance that against what you would still like to achieve— there seems to be a shortfall. You kick yourself out of this mood by the middle of the month but it is still a reflective period. From the 20th or 21st onwards you suddenly become very busy, which is not a bad thing as it provides a few distractions.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

A quiet start to 2024 will be preoccupied by some of the necessary and mundane aspects of life. You’ll experience quite a productive period where jobs and careers are concerned, but sometimes it will feel like very hard work. There will be contacts and reunions with at least one old friend mid-month which could lead to the hatching of a moneymaking scheme, and there is some fresh energy filtering through in

connection with any of your artistic ambitions.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

Rather a lovely and productive time for all family relationships, and especially for relationships between parents and children. Having said that, parents with grown-up kids will enjoy a new feeling of freedom as their children start fledging the nest and making their own way. There will be a bright period on the social scene, especially midmonth, with some interesting travel opportunities around the 25th, 26th and 27th. Overseas destinations beckon so check your passport is up to date.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

January puts a smile on your face as you count your blessings and realise that you are in a much more advantageous position than you might have been this time last year. Now that the Christmas hullabaloo is behind you, you can look forwards with a much clearer vision of the path ahead, feeling quite cheerful and optimistic about your prospects – both emotionally and professionally. While these prospects affect everyone, it is probably older people who will benefit the most.

MICK LAMBERT GROUNDWORKS & LANDSCAPING EST. SINCE 1977

An optimistic opening to 2024 as something you have long wanted and waited for comes within sight and grasp. This could be the relationship with the perfect partner or that all important career promotion…This boosts your confidence and pushes you into taking a few calculated risks that you would have avoided this time last year. Other people are attracted to your bright and positive attitude.

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT You will be reviewing a number of relationships and while one or two might be relegated to the recycle bin, there are two or three others which you’ll recognise as being the most important. Of those two or three, one is definitely your primary interest. Whatever happens where jobs and careers are concerned, you will be more interested in the emotional side of things – which is rather delightful because it opens the doors to a deeper foundation of commitment. LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

A bright and breezy month with lots of social activity, which in some ways makes up for a pretty dull December. A lot of you will be glad

HOROSCOPES

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

that Christmas is over, giving you time and space to concentrate on other issues – like new job routines kicking in around the 14th or 15th and some new energy in old and stale relationships. On the downside, not a good month for travel, and if you are going anywhere, check small print on tickets and timetables.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

So many things and so many people, so many duties and obligations… all get in the way of you doing what you want to do, and being the person you want to be. I know it’s distressing, but bide your time, for although there are changes ahead which are destined to make you feel happier, those times have not yet come.

GLASS

SUPPLIES

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC

Perhaps a low-key start to the New Year with some feelings of postfestive anti-climax. But it’s more than that… Women of the sign in particular will be doing a lot of self-examination, sorting out priorities, and looking back over their shoulders at times gone by. This is not just a case of nostalgia, but rather looking backwards to find the answers which can take you forwards.

MOTORS & GADGETS

A CAR FOR OUR TIMES THIS MONTH: HONDA HR-V eHEV

BY M OTORING E XP ERT TI M SAUNDERS

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking at taking up a new hobby, or simply want to hide away inside from the winter cold, we’ve listed the products you need for a perfect transition into 2024. TRUST FORTA HEADSET, £39.99 from Amazon This is the perfect companion for anyone planning on wishing away the weather by diving headfirst into a new video game. It’s licensed for PS5, enables 3D audio, and is made (85%) from recycled plastics making it a must buy for all gamers this January!

As we slowly come to terms with climate change Honda have made a car that might just help. The first thing I notice about the HR-V is the seats. Good design has always been associated with Honda and this sporty subcompact SUV is no different. Internally there is a considered layout and there's colour. It’s not a dull black run of the mill interior as chosen by numerous manufacturers these days. No, this is something special. I would go as far as saying that from a design perspective this is my favourite vehicle currently on the roads. The fact that this is not a mild hybrid but a full hybrid, means that it is possible to run on fully electric power, if required, meaning that it is more environmentally friendly but also much more efficient. And you don’t have to suffer as a result — if you’re careful it will cover 459

miles on a full tank. In short I am impressed. This is the joy of hybrid motoring where sensible driving is rewarded. In the old days it was necessary for the driver to push a button to engage EV mode. Not any longer. The Honda does it automatically. All can all be done in EV mode without any thought from the driver. It works a treat. As we drive in EV mode you can’t avoid feeling happy for the pedestrians whose air is that little bit less polluted because of our Honda. I have long championed selfcharging hybrids for their ease of use and environmental credentials, but Honda has taken them to another level. Overall the HR-V is a slick, understated operator, which is my type of vehicle. You can read Tim's thoughts in greater depth at www. yourlocallink.co.uk.

HAIER I-MASTER SERIES 5 COMPACT FOOD PROCESSOR, £79 from small-appliances-uk. haier-europe.com. Grind together spices, squash vegetables or even create your own pesto in minutes with this stylish kitchen essential. With 550W of power and a total of four blades, this compact powerhouse delivers consistent, professional results. SIMBA ORBIT WEIGHTED BLANKET, £169 from simbasleep.com Glide into the new year with the guarantee of great sleep and ultimate comfort. The Simba weighted blanket is filled with thousands of weighted glass nano-beads that allow it to shape itself to your body like a gentle full body hug! CHIPOLO ONE ITEM FINDER, £22 for one. Enjoy 35% off a 4-pack until Jan the 4th. Eliminate airport anxiety from your new year travel plans. This gadget can find lost keys, bags, backpacks and even your pets! The tag connects to an app that rings your misplaced item and notifies you the second you leave it behind, marking its exact location.

York City F.C January Report By Your Local Link Staff Writer Sammi Minion The only place to start this month is with the result of the November 30th York City F.C Supporters Trust Special General Meeting. The club’s supporters voted overwhelmingly in favour of a proposal from owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla to increase their shareholding of the club to 75% by purchasing a further 24& worth of B-shares from the Trust. It is expected that increasing the Uggla’s shareholding will modernise the club which will in turn put them in a much better position to challenge come the start of the 2024/25 season. In the National League (at time of publication) the club find themselves in 19th place, one point clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand over 21st placed Ebbsfleet United. This is the product of an almost unbeaten month. City began November with victories over A.F.C. Fylde and Oxford City in the league and a win over Chester in the FA Cup. The only league defeat throughout the period came at the hands of 12th placed Hartlepool United on the 18th of November. It has been since the start of December that the club have seen a downturn in fortunes. On Friday the 1st, the Minstermen hosted League One side and 2013 champions

Wigan Athletic in the next round of the FA Cup. While the home side battled hard, the difference in quality between the two sides ultimately told and City lost out 1-0. Real embarrassment arrived eight days later, as City began their FA Trophy campaign away to semi-pro outfit Nantwich Town. Neal Ardley offered opportunities to a number of fringe players making a total of seven changes to the side that played Wigan. The gamble did not pay off and the Minstermen found themselves 3-0 down after only 30 minutes. Even after York made a host of substitutions and Nantwich were reduced to ten men, City still proved unable to reduce the deficit. The two time winners crashed out of the cup 3-2. With York City now eliminated from all of their cup competitions, the club’s full focus will be on the National League meaning there can be no excuse for giving up any more ground in the relegation battle. The Minstermen take on Ebbsfleet, Rochdale and Gateshead in the coming weeks. For more of the latest updates head to www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

SPORTS

YORK SPORT REPORT RUGBY LEGEND’S ULTRAMARATHON FUNDRAISER PASSES THROUGH YORK Kevin Sinfield began his 7 in 7 in 7 endurance challenge on the 1st of December, arriving at York Minster at 4pm— having set off from Headingly Stadium in Leeds, where he made a name playing over 500 games for the Rhinos throughout an 18-year playing career. The journey to York Minster was just the first leg in a series of 7 ultra marathons —each 27.2 miles in length— across more cities around the country in order to raise awareness and money in support of people impacted by motor neurone disease (MND). Kevin’s former team-mate Rob Burrow was diagnosed with the condition in 2019. In the years

since, Kevin has raised millions across three separate endurance events. Kevin says that the 7 ultramarathons were just the next step in “celebrating Rob and showing people we care.” At time of publication the fundraiser has already surpassed their goal of raising £777,777 for MND. The total is now well over the £800,000 mark. After Kevin’s arrival in York he moved to Cardiff, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin, Brighton before ending with a race from Twickenham Stadium on The Mall in London. To read more sports news head to www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

Council step in to help make sports clubs more accessible “Sports clubs across our city do lots of amazing work” says Councillor Jo Coles, but “the cost-of-living crisis means that finances are often stretched.” This followed the announcement that £7,853 has been awarded to 11 sports clubs in York, to help those who cannot afford to play sport be able to do

so. The clubs receiving funding included York Down Syndrome Support Group and Bootham Ladies Futsal Club. Each organisation has also been given mental health training so that they can help raise awareness for the issue in their respective sports. To read more visit www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

energy savings This week the BBC estimated that the average UK household will pay an extra £94 in their energy bills during 2024 than they did in 2023. In order to prevent this change from having an overwhelming impact, we’ve listed some top tips on how to preserve energy elsewhere.

SWITCH OFF STANDBY Almost all electrical appliances can be turned off at the plug without upsetting their programming— the electricity saved can add up to £55 a year!

draughts. To have your doors and windows draught proofed can cost more than £200 but will save you close to £90 each year because you’ll not have to turn your thermostat as high.

CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER According to regulation, energy suppliers are obliged to help you come to a solution if you can’t afford your bills. This could take the shape of a full payment plan review, a payment break, or an offer of more time to pay. It’s well worth reaching out as they may even offer hardship funds. All estimates on annual savings were generated from the Energy Saving Trust.

I hope you have all had a pleasant time over Christmas and are now thinking ahead to what wonders 2024 will bring. SIGN FOR THE GREAT UP BRITISH NOW BIRDWATCH!

GARDENING JOBS

January might be the coldest month of the year — meaning it’s the least fun to be out in the garden— but there are still essential tasks to be done. Here’s our tips:

From the 26th until the 28th of January 2024, more than 700,000 people are expected to assist the RSPB’s wildlife preservation efforts by monitoring the birds that come to visit their garden. As a volunteer, all you have to do is spend an hour watching the birds in your garden or local park and record what you see. Even if there aren't many birds around every observation reported to the RSPB is vital to their research. The Big Garden Birdwatch is one of the RSPB’s most important resources — it provides crucial data on which species

Recycle your old Christmas tree Check with your Christmas tree supplier as they might just run a collection service to make the task genuinely effortless. If not, you can chop up your Christmas tree and put it in the green bin or take your trees to Hazel Court or Towthorpe/Strensall for composting. Be sure to make sure they’re in small pieces, as trees can take up to a year to break down.

Feed the birds With the RSPB’s Big Birdwatch on the horizon, what better time to refresh the snacks available to the birds in your garden? If you have any fat cakes close to hand, they’re an ideal option for giving your visitors the energy they need to keep warm all winter long.

are flourishing and which are struggling in Britain. Tragically over the four decades since the survey began, the number of birds in Britain have dropped by as much as 38 million. To keep on top of things the charity need all the help they can get. For more information on the Big Garden Birdwatch or to register your interest, visit www.rspb.org.uk/.

Vegetable crops Vegetable rotations are vital in maintaining quality and usefulness in your soil over time. Annually changing crops helps to balance the amount of nutrients in your soil and limits deficiencies. If you grew potatoes in 2023, the new year might be all about cabbage or turnips.

£39,000 grant the council have secured from the Coronation Living Heritage Fund — to commemorate the Coronation of Charles III. Councillor Jenny Kent said, “We can’t wait to showcase small scale, high density, native tree planting in York. We would love to hear your suggestions for planting sites.” If you have an idea for a location for any of the new woods, you can submit a suggestion to yorkgreenstreets@york.gov.uk by 31 January 2024.

WEDDING GARDENING GUIDE

PLANTING FRUIT TREES PART 3 Over the last couple of months, we’ve been taking an in-depth look at what to consider when establishing fruit trees in a minigarden or allotment orchard. In this, the final column on the topic, the focus is on how to choose from the numerous varieties of apples, pear, plums, etc. available and the best practice in actually getting the trees into the ground.

Choosing Fruit Varieties

There’s a lot to consider when choosing varieties. The first point to keep in mind, especially if you’ve space for several trees, is when the fruit will be ready. This is most important for apples and, to a lesser extent, pears. Some apple varieties like Discovery, are ripe as early as mid-August and will not keep much beyond mid-September. Other later keepers are usually picked at the

end of October and can be stored in a cool place until February or March. Pears have similar ripening and eating times, but most will not keep beyond December. If you have space for only a few trees, it’s often best to choose so-called mid-season varieties— those ready to eat from early October through to around Christmas. Such varieties include Yorkshire’s very own Ribston Pippin, which originated from near Knaresborough in the eighteenth century, and the more modern Elstar, which can occasionally be found on supermarket shelves. When it comes to planting supermarket types, Elstar is more of an anomaly than a rule. You should resist the temptation to choose most of the other varieties favoured by the big retailers. Pink Lady, Gala, Jazz, et al don’t thrive in Yorkshire’s

BY G A R DE NING E X P ERT

Tony Chalcraft

climate. They also lack the flavour of many older varieties and are likely to be more disease prone. The same goes for plums—while a Victoria does have a lot going for it, most familiar pear varieties are only suitable with Conference and Comice cropping if it’s possible to give them a consistent sunny spot. The key to success is not just going for a name that’s familiar from the shops, each fruit has a multitude of varieties so it’s worth thinking about which is best for your garden project. Resist the temptation to buy the fruit trees you see offered in glossy online adverts. The claims made are often fantastical and are unlikely to bear fruit (ba-dum). Think carefully about ‘family’ trees —these are one tree onto which several different varieties have been grafted— as not all varieties grow with the same vigour, so a family

tree can easily become dominated by the strongest growing variety, to the detriment of its siblings.

Planting

Finally, once you have the trees, there’s the planting. Take care with this. In particular, do not plant the tree either too deeply or shallowly. If the scion (graft point) is buried too deep in the earth it can lead to the variety rooting rather than the rootstock. Too shallow planting, on the other hand, may make the tree susceptible to drought or wind rock. Most trees will need staking (fastening a young tree to an upright wooden beam in the ground) to anchor them during their early years. If planted where rabbits or deer are about, protection will be essential. Be cautious about adding compost to the planting hole. This can help on light soils, but on any that get soggy in winter it can be counterproductive. The improved soil conditions act as a sump to draw water to the planting hole rather than draining it away. There’s a lot more that could be said about planting fruit trees. If you want to explore further the Royal Horticultural Society’s site at www.rhs.org.uk is a great source of information. Also recommended is the down to earth advice on the website of local fruit nursery R V Roger of Pickering at www.rvroger. co.uk.

WEDDING GUIDE

ARRIVE IN

STYLE

The magic of your wedding shouldn’t just be confined to your venue, honeymoon, or ceremony — rather it should travel with you through each and every step of the special day. Here’s our guide of the places in York that offer executive and priority transport to ensure you never compromise on stylish transport. Your Wedding is a day that you’ll never forget, so the last thing you should worry about is arriving at the venue late or your driver getting lost on the way. To avoid problems before you even arrive at the venue, it's absolutely essential to find a driver you can trust — after all, no one wants to see the bride showing up (too) late in an over-cramped car! How that wedding transport looks however is completely up to you. A traditional white-glove service might be the most popular — where drivers treat your wedding party like real members of a medieval nobility— making the simple task of moving you from A to B between wedding venues feel like a fairy-tale journey. However we understand as romantic as the idea might be, this isn’t for everyone. Many couples from our more rural

30

communities like to incorporate aspects of Yorkshire into their day, and where hay bales and tweed suits don’t quite do the job, they prefer to arrive at their venue in the front seat of a tractor or on the back of a trailer! Your wedding car (or vehicle) might be a brand new Mercedes, Range Rover, limousine, or a beautifully restored classic car, but what is sure is that it’ll be beautifully decorated with bows, and ribbons as you drive off into the sunset with your significant other. Just as you don’t want to be late for anything on the big day, it’s also important to get booked in with your chauffeur as soon as possible, a lot of the best places do book up quickly so do everything you can to ensure you’re not resorting to Uber on the big day! The companies providing transportation in York will ensure that you both arrive in style, and get the accomplished feeling of leaving behind your wedding with the sense that you’ve put together the perfect day— down to the last minute detail. Head to www.yourlocallink. co.uk to find our online wedding directory full of local suppliers.

It doesn’t matter if your venue is a little drive outside the city centre — whether you book a wedding in York, Ripon or Harrogate— Men in White Limousines have you covered. There’s so much more to their cars than the simple certainty that you’ll arrive in style. The fleet of black, white, and pink stretch limos are all fitted with TV plasma screens, DVD players, Playstation consoles, mood lighting, and a champagne bar— making them an excellent addition to your stag or hen party plans as well as the wedding itself. WEDDING GUIDE

PICKING THE RIGHT

Florist Forget everything you thought you knew. This is the ultimate guide to properly using flowers on your special day. Whether your preference is for roses and peonies, or something a little more rustic, the first step you need to take is finding your colour scheme and if any flowers have a special meaning to you. For example, if you book a wedding at Woodstock’s old stables —with its exposed wooden beams— you might opt for a bunch of Gypsophila paired alongside some Avalanche Roses to create your fairy-tale aesthetic. A wedding at Ox Pasture Hall in the heart of Summer, however, might take its influence from the brilliant Scarborough Sea around the corner or match the rose-wreathed pergolas that line their gardens. The right florist can order and arrange whatever flowers or colours you need regardless of the season — all you need to do is to have a real idea of your personal style as a starting point.

TRENDS

While we expect most of 2024’s

weddings to revolve around bright pinks, olive greens, and rusty shades these aren’t a requirement. Thousands of brides tend to return to what we call ‘traditional colours’ every year where they prioritise earthy tones like white, blush, and cream. If you’re still struggling to envisage your colour scheme, social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram can be another great source of inspiration — searching for even the simplest of phrases like #weddingflowers can throw up millions of posts.

FINDING A FLORIST

The idea of producing a fluent floral style — that corresponds with the rest of your wedding day— might seem like a daunting process at first, however, those fears will evaporate as soon you find a florist you can trust. All you need is an expert who understands your vision and can match it to make the perfect arrangements

for you. Almost effortlessly they’ll be able to use those flowers that will complement your look across all its many applications— from bouquets, boutonnières, ceremony arrangements, reception centrepieces, and the floral details on your cake. Just make sure you’re prepared for that first meeting, the last thing you want is confusion between your vision and the person in charge of putting it into practice. If you have the time you could even put together a mood board with examples of themes and colours you’d like to see included. Then there’s the issue of your budget — explaining your budget in full will allow your florist to recommend exactly what’s best for you.

BUDGET SAVING

One of the best ways to save a little on price is by choosing flowers that are in season for your big day. The blooms will be easier to get hold of

and have the benefit of being in the peak of their beauty, giving the best quality. Another great tip to consider is to recreate the same arrangements in and around your venue so that you’ll have to purchase fewer flowers. The designs for the ceremony room or church could be taken and placed at the reception venue.

SUPERSTITIOUS MIND SURROUNDING YOUR BIG DAY?

Allowing an odd number of blooms to be crafted into a bouquet is considered lucky. Odd numbers of stems in a floral arrangement are favourable because even numbers are considered to bring bad luck. Whereas many flowers have bold and beautiful meanings your florist will direct you to making the perfect choices surrounding meaning by putting appeal into how your arrangements can represent a personal touch to you.

HEALTH WEDDING & BEAUTY GUIDE

F I N D I N G YO U R

Photographer & Stationary Designer While most couples understand that the styles, designs, and trends chosen for the venue, floral decorations, and dress should be complemented by the vehicle you arrive in and the menu you settle on, properly asserting that sense of style shouldn't stop there. It should extend all the way to your wedding stationery— the only part of your wedding that guests get to see months before the actual day, in the form of invitations and save-thedate cards. It is both the first and last thing guests’ touch. When done properly, your stationery will convey what to expect by setting a stylistic tone that introduces them to the most important of your wedding themes. Then in the thank-

you cards that follow, your stationery will continue to serve as a tasteful reminder of the most memorable parts of your big day. To organise a wedding that lingers long in memory, there can be no compromise on meticulous planning for your stationery. The role of stationery in shaping the way your wedding will be remembered is second only in importance to finding the right photographer. A professional photographer will capture each of the most beautiful highlights of your special day and transform them into portraits that will light up your home for the rest of your life. Those photographs will ultimately become your most treasured keepsakes, with a legacy that spans decades. The right wedding photos will sit on your mantlepiece for the next 50 years so you can reminisce your vows, the kiss, and the first dance— to eventually share with your grandchildren.

From the 4th of January 2024 blue badge holders will be able to park within the boundary of York city centre for the first time since 2021. Disabled parking in pedestrianised areas was initially banned to enable for the construction of bollards that protect against vehicle-based terror attacks. However, in the last few months the council

have made overturning this decision a priority — launching a two-step consultation with residents to do so. In an official statement on their website the council say that “Blue Badge access is now a permanent feature of the city” as the ultimate result of that consultation process. This new access does not mean an end to anti-terrorist

Special hub set up to help find lost dogs When she volunteered to help find a missing golden labradoodle back in July, Mandy Butler could never have imagined she would soon be heading up an elite team of dog rescuers as part of York’s first permanent rescue hub. Mandy was called into action by the family of Arlo who had been missing for over a month in York. She immediately got to work ensuring the area was “covered with cameras, scent trails, and feed stations.” She

says, “He followed the next trail to our trap which was laden with food for him and within a few minutes he entered” Mandy explains that what really brought Arlo home was, “community support of postering and calling in sightings.” Even after hearing of Arlo’s safe return "The community donated towards our costs and the decision was made to use funds to buy and supply a full kit to York so that any other missing dogs had the equipment available immediately.” Thanks to those generous contributions the infrastructure is now in place so that no dog will ever be lost for as long as Arlo ever again. The service provided for the elderly or disabled York residents who have no other means of travelling. A spokesperson for the charity said, “Put simply, we have reached the point at which our fleet is not up to the standards required to maintain the quality or reliability of the service.” A volunteer car driver scheme, where customers can book a car in advance to collect them and take them to their destination, will still continue, albeit on a limited basis. To book a seat in one of the volunteer cars call up on 01904 630080.

Festive Afternoon Tea at Hotel Du Vin

Beyond the magical lights, fun days out at markets and nostalgic music, Christmas can also be an overwhelmingly busy time. It is at times like this — when it feels like life is moving at 100mph— that we need venues like Hotel du Vin and offerings like their Festive Afternoon Tea. The Georgian Grade II listed hotel is just a five-minute walk from the historic city walls and yet its doors spill out into a surprisingly tranquil street, tucked away from that hustle and bustle. The bistro room is light, bright, and

charming — lit up by a skylight that encircles the room. While the table decorations (including my first Christmas cracker of the year!) are tasteful and elegant. The glass of champagne that greets us is an equally bright and crisp introduction. However plaudits should be reserved for the afternoon tea itself. It perfectly captures all the magic of a Christmas in York and encapsulates it within a delightfully tranquil and relaxed setting. After pouring out a cup of Bird & Blend breakfast tea we got to work on

the festively flavoured and deliciously delicate finger sandwiches. On a separate plate are fresh scones, clotted cream, and jam. The chef has saved their finest work however for the upper echelon of our stand— reserved for cakes and desserts. The workmanship that has gone into their appearance alone is exemplary but second only to the taste. From the Bucks Fizz Clementine Gin Cheesecake, displayed with icing like a tiny present package, to the Santa’s

Sunday Lunch at Middletons Hotel

Four minute’s walk from the Minster and a stone’s throw from a fantastic flurry of iconic 17th-century buildings, Middletons Hotel on Cromwell Road is situated right at the centre of everything worth seeing in York. However on a Sunday like ours — that reached lows of -3 degrees— quaint streets and historic sites weren’t quite what tempted us out of the house. What did was Middleton’s luxurious three-course Sunday Lunch offering— perfectly complimented by friendly and helpful staff in a much needed cosy, warm and comforting restaurant. We kicked off our meal with creamy garlic mushrooms on sourdough bread—a choice that set a delicious tone for the rest of our experience. Our daughter cleverly opted for the prawn cocktail salad, it was a light and sweet introduction that allowed her to save

space for the main event. For the main course I indulged in the Chicken Supreme which was nothing short of a Sunday Lunch triumph — perfectly cooked chicken that melted off the bone at the slightest touch, paired with crispy potatoes and another rich and creamy sauce, while my husband opted for the roast beef. The Sunday Lunch’s signature dish usually needs no introduction, but Middletons’ version, with its tender beef and richly roasted carrots, is well deserving of praise. We then capped our meal off with a luxury sticky toffee pudding. From the rich and creamy mushrooms all the way to the indulgent toffee sauce — a table at Middletons’ Sunday Lunch is the perfect way to spend any of the wintery weekends this January. Call 01904 611570 to book your table.

Belt Cranberry Fashion Eclair— the cakes are packed full of the kind of flavour that explodes into life from the very first bite. In a sentence, with our Festive Afternoon Tea at Hotel du Vin — Christmas came early. Hotel Du Vin is located at 89, The Mount, York. To book a table call 01904 405260.

TRAVEL & HOLIDAYS

WELCOME TO 2024! One of the questions we regularly get asked is which destination is currently proving most popular for future travel. For 2023 our most popular destination was Canada. However, in 2024 we are seeing an increase in clients looking for adventure, with Greenland proving to be one of 2024’s top adventure destinations. Situated between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and a part of the Arctic Circle, Greenland is an exciting destination for the adventurous traveler. Greenland is unlike any other country on earth. It is the world’s biggest island (by area) that is not a continent, yet is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. In order to learn a little more about the destination, we sat down with our travel industry colleague Andrew from AE Expeditions to hear about his experience in Greenland during the summer of 2023.

As a regular ocean cruiser looking to take a first expedition cruise, currently considering a trip to Greenland, what would your top tips be for someone new to expedition cruising? The key thing is to note that

48

an expedition cruise has no set itinerary. We follow the weather, the ice flows and the wildlife so our itinerary happens in real-time and is not preplanned with set times for stops/excursions in advance. If you go with the flow and follow the adventure you will be guaranteed to have a great time. We still offer spacious cabins, amazing food & wine, and luxurious treats such as the hot tubs and sauna so it offers a great relaxing break like any normal cruise. Just with a sense of adventure!

Which port in Greenland surprised you the most and why? Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote town in the western hemisphere. This small town is only accessible via heliport or by the harbour but for 6 months of the year the port is locked off by iceflows and at times does feel like you are on the edge of the earth. It was a very calm place, the locals were friendly and were as interested in knowing more of our lives as they were happy to share their Inuit culture and way of living. Although it is remote, they are still connected to the wider world, which I found out whilst playing football with the local kids on their astroturf pitch where they referred to themselves as Messi, Ronaldo, and

BY TRAVE L E XPE RT

Kerry Lakey Kane… and compared to my skills with the ball, they may as well have been. I think the expeditioners were 8-0 down by the end of the game!

If you could have an onboard experience for the first time again what would it be? It has to be the Polar Plunge. Whilst the idea of a cold shower fills me with dread, I couldn’t wait to get into the ice-strewn waters of the Arctic and take the polar plunge. Enjoyable isn’t quite the right word but it is exhilarating and gave me such a buzz as I have never experienced before. Plus it is an experience I will never get to do again. So when in Rome… or Ittoqqortoormiit!

If you have previously visited Svalbard, what makes Greenland a different experience from other areas? Whilst both Arctic destinations, Svalbard and Greenland, are incredibly different. Svalbard is the wildlife centre of the Arctic region whilst Greenland offers the most spectacular scenery in the Arctic Circle as well as a unique culture and history. Travelling to Greenland will offer you a wide range of sights with magnificent glaciers, majestic mountain ranges, and deep

striking fjords to explore with still icebergs floating all around. The rocky landscape across Greenland provides many microclimates across the land so when walking on land you can experience ice formations, mossy bogs, and shale rock gardens all within 5 minutes walk of one another. The Greenlandic people and culture are unique and a visit to Greenland offers a chance to learn more about the Inuit people and their traditions. If this has kindled your zest for adventure and you would like to discover more, get in touch 01904 623444 or visit us at 88 Main Street, Fulford.
