You could be forgiven for thinking that the cold weather would be done and dusted

by January, but year after year, to my personal horror, February is a ruthlessly chilly month. I tend to notice on my birthday when I’m on a night out in town and suddenly realise that I should’ve brought a jacket, a scarf, and gloves. And while I’m not too fond of the cold, it’s usually perfect for the York Ice Trail, which usually takes place at the start of February, but the event has been gently pushed to the start of March this year (5th and 6th for your diaries).

Of course, it’s also the month of love! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and there are plenty of events happening in York to help you get in the mood for romance.

No Jab, No Job

In January the regulations became law that will require all employees of a regulated health provider who have or might have face to face contact with anyone who is using the services to be double jabbed by 1st April 2022 (unless they are exempt).

The NHS guidance defines face to face contact very broadly.

It will cover not only clinical staff, but also porters, cleaners, receptionists or support staff that might have contact with service users. This will therefore include those who need to go into or pass through any area where service users might be, even if it this is only to get to their work area away from service users.

That will require all health providers to check the vaccination status of an employee if they might only have even incidental face to face contact with anyone using their services.

To be able to meet the double jab requirement by 1st April 2022 the employee will need to have had their first jab on or about 3rd February 2022.

Employers who have to meet this requirement, still need to act fairly in the way they approach this. They should now meet with the employees to: • Check their vaccination status • If not double jabbed, are they exempt or are they willing to be vaccinated?

• If they object to being jabbed, consider: • If their role can be changed to avoid potential contact with service users • Alternative roles available that don’t require vaccination Employers should check that their Employee Data Privacy Notice is up to date and covers the data that will now be held.

If the employee remains unvaccinated and there are no alternative roles, a final meeting should be held after 3rd February to consider dismissing the employee. As always, a right of appeal should be given.

A York woman has raised over £4000 by playing the bagpipes during the pandemic.

Rachael Blueman, who lives in Rawcliffe, started learning to play when she was 38 with the City of York Pipe Band after seeing them outside Marks and Spencers on Parliament Street.

Today, she’s raised thousands of pounds for the RSPCA and York Animal Home.

It all began after she heard about bagpipe players piping in Scotland for Thursday night's Clap For Heroes: “I thought I’ll just start piping in the local

street, and then a few people heard about it and asked if I would pipe for them. At one point I was piping in three or four places on a Thursday night.

“After a little while, I suddenly thought I could maybe use this to fund raise. So I got my husband with an RSPCA bucket around me, and if people wanted to donate, they could, and if not, they didn’t.

But it was just wonderful because you’d go to these streets and you’d have people that hadn’t seen anyone for weeks, they’d come out and they’d stand on their doorstep.

It was just raising spirits and really making a difference to the community. It was lovely, it really was lovely.”

After starting on Thursday nights, Rachael has found herself doing

more and more events such as veterans funerals, performing at care homes, and on New Years' Eve, she performed at The Grand in York, with proceeds going to her chosen charities: “I’m very lucky that I have got this skill, and it’s wonderful that I can make a difference. When people ask, I’m honoured to be involved. It’s lovely.”

On her own, Rachael has raised over £4,000, but she hasn’t been working alone the whole time: “I’ve got a friend called Ruth who sells preserves for York Animal Home, so together we’ve done two Christmas markets in Rawcliffe, and I was piping there and between us, we raised £750 in two days. She's raised over £15,000 from selling preserves and making them!”

Spencer Brown, 28, grew up in Rawcliffe and Easingwold. He then went on to study at Durham University, the University of York and the University of Pennsylvania.

Called Goldhorn, the novel is set in York in the future. It’s inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, and imagines a society where the influence of Big Tech is inescapable. Their control of business, politics and the media means they can dictate what the population buy, read and watch – and, ultimately, what they say, think and feel.

Through the protagonist, twentyyear-old Harrison Snow, the book explores the idea of free will in a society governed by censorship and propaganda.

Spencer also has a poetry collection, some of which are about York and Yorkshire.

It’s just a telephone call.

I guess I’m not the only one who’s ever had to wait patiently for the longed-for sound of that ring. But knowing that doesn’t make the waiting any easier.

Everyone else around me is clearly finding it hard as well. No one is saying anything, but it’s obvious from

the way they’re reacting. The doctor keeps suddenly remembering to check some piece of the equipment. I’ve been watching him out of the corner of my eye. I swear he’s checked that same connection five times in the last hour-and-a-half. The orderlies are also moving things and then putting them

Getting there

AROUND AND ABOUT ALLERTHORPE COMMON

This is an easy walk ideal for a short winter stroll. The first half traverses Allerthorpe Common, a mix of mainly coniferous woodland and more open areas managed by Forestry England. The woodland has a network of paths which can also be explored if you want to extend or vary the walk described below. After reaching the small village of Allerthorpe, the second half of the walk crosses quiet farmland. The entire route is on easily followed paths, most of which have good surfaces. Any muddy stretches are easily circumvented on side paths. Please note, after very heavy rain some sections of Allerthorpe Common can be subject to surface water flooding.

Directions 1 Starting from Forestry England’s Common

Lane parking area, cross the road and go through the metal gate opposite. Take the wider main (centre) track between birch trees.

Continue on this well-surfaced track ignoring all side tracks and paths off. Reach pylons after about 800 metres, then keep ahead for a further 500 metres. At this point, where the straight track ends and with a wooden hand gate in front, go sharp right on a lesser track with a fenced open area left and woodland right. Ignore side paths eventually following the track as it bends left to a wooden gate ahead.

2 Go through the gate and continue on the

narrower path through birch woodland. Keep ahead striding over a narrow stream/ditch.

When the path emerges from the trees keep ahead with a field on the left. After a bridge

over a ditch ignore the track joining from the left to arrive at buildings on the right. Go through double metal gates and at the grass triangle take the tarmac road right to arrive at Allerthorpe immediately to the right of the Plough pub.

3 Keep right (ahead) following the road (not

left up the main street) passing the village hall right. At the end of the houses, take the tarmac lane off to the right signed ‘Waplington’.

Continue on the lane, keeping right at Lake Lodge on the now rougher track through trees, soon passing a large white house (Waplington Hall) left. Where the track splits, keep ahead following yellow waymarks. Continue under the pylons, after which the track swings right with buildings (Warren House) visible ahead.

The easiest starting Miles Hours point is Forestry England’s car park on Common Lane. This is the second car park if approaching from the A1079. It is also possible to start the walk from Allerthorpe village where roadside parking is available. Allerthorpe is 15 miles from York just off the A1079. For the Common Lane car park turn right off the A1079 beyond Wilberfoss signed Sutton upon Derwent.

Soon after the road enters woods, turn left into Common Lane. The car park is on the right after 500 metres. Unfortunately, there are no viable public transport options to either this or the Allerthorpe village start point.

The only option is The Plough at Allerthorpe open daily from midday except for Mondays.

What to see

The main feature of the walk is the tranquil wood and heathland of Allerthorpe Common.

Unenclosed common until the 1960s it was then blanketed with conifer trees, mainly Scots pine.

Recently areas have been cleared creating a more diverse habitat. Many rare species inhabit the common. Part of the common, not directly passed on the walk, is a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve.

Nineteenth-century Waplington Hall, glimpsed at point three in the Directions, sits on the site of a lost medieval village. The well-drained flat and sandy farmland nearby is extensively used for lawn turf growing.

5 Here, where the track bends

In about 150 metres by an elevated green tank turn sharp left (footpath sign to right) along the edge of the field with the hedge right. Now keep going with the hedge right along the edge of several more fields until the track approaches woodland ahead.

Now continue ahead on the earth path skirting any muddy sections. If in doubt keep the mainly pine trees right and mainly birch trees left.

I’ve just dined on homegrown quince.

Not in slices with mince and not aboard a pea-green boat (like the owl and the pussycat in Edward Lear’s nonsense poem) but buttered and

lightly cooked as a dessert in the comfort of the dining room. It says a lot about quince that many people know of it only through Lear’s poem rather than from eating or growing at home.

This is a pity, as quince has a lot to offer both in the kitchen and in the garden.

First of all, let’s be clear on the quince I’m writing about. Confusingly, there are two garden plants called quince.

The one that’s more well-known is the Japanese quince Chaenomeles speciosa. A deciduous shrub it does bear small fruit, edible if cooked, but is mainly grown as an often untidy ornamental.

The quince I ate was the ‘true’ quince Latin name Cydonia oblonga. In contrast to the Oriental quince, this is a tree reaching up to eight metres in height and bearing a substantial fruit similar in size and shape to

a plump pear. While also needing to be cooked it is, in my view at least, far superior to Chaenomeles and should be more widely known and grown.

That said, cultivating quince is not without challenges. Cropping can be erratic. Some years there are next to no fruit. Last year my semi-mature 25 year old tree of the variety Vranja carried less than 20 quinces. There have been years with many more but it looks unlikely the tree will ever match the productivity of its apple and pear neighbours. One reason for this is that Cydonia quince is more at home further south than Yorkshire. It’s not that the blossom is particularly susceptible to spring frost – quince flowers relatively late in May. Rather it’s because summer is usually not warm enough for the fruit to fully develop and, most of all, ripen.

Another reason Cydonia crops unreliably is that every year sees it afflicted with the fungal disease quince blight. This coats the leaves with brown blotches causing many to fall in early summer. Although recovery is swift with fresh green leaves soon thrown out, this partial defoliation stresses the tree and reduces its ability to hold and swell fruit.

Unfortunately, it’s not just my tree that suffers. All trees I’m aware of in York get

You might think unreliable cropping and blight are reason enough not to grow quince but there are redeeming features. Leafless winter trees can be striking with their often irregular shape and twisted, somewhat droopy, branches. In spring the pink-white blossom gives one of the best displays of any orchard tree. When not disfigured by blight the large leaves are another distinctive feature. In autumn these turn yellow, holding into early winter. But it’s the fruit that really stands out – if you get any! Baby fruitlets are alluringly tactile with silky, downy, skin. Once full-sized, the ripening fruits shine conspicuously on the tree, a striking buttery yellow. Then, when picked, there’s the distinctive perfumed fragrance. One quince can scent an entire room. Finally, comes the eating.

While more or less inedible raw, when cooked, the hard flesh becomes soft, almost mushy, and takes on a pinkish tinge. The taste is subtly sweet with a slight piquancy. Best of all, the unique fragrance remains. There’s no other fruit quite like it.

The investment includes a £5m Library Learning Centre for Clifton, a new permanent library for Haxby and Wigginton, and a significant capital investment for Acomb Library Learning Centre.

Clifton’s new Library Learning Centre will go from 270 square metres to over 1400, incorporating a multi-purpose space holding 15,000 books, evening events, a Reading

Cafe, a Children’s Library, and a community partner area.

Other key developments to be delivered under the £7.7m commitment include; a new modern library, co-located with Haxby and Wigginton Oaken Grove Community Centre and capital investment in the current Library Learning Centre in Acomb, allowing development and improvement through the renewal of the ground floor entrance and café, an additional community garden, an extended and improved library area, improved access to other service providers and delivery of a full programme of events and activities in partnership with cultural providers.

Wigginton Squash Club is holding an open weekend so that people can get a feel for the club and find out what the sport is all about.

There will be coaches on hand all day for a chat, plus complimentary tea, coffee and cake. Visitors can take a tour of the facilities, enter a free prize draw to win an 18 month Family Membership (worth over £300), use the gym and even try a game of squash or racketball equipment will be provided.

Squash is a fast-paced competitive game played in a sealed room with a rubber ball and rackets. As well as being great for aerobic fitness,

it can help increase flexibility and strength. And no team does it like Wigginton Squash Club: the Men’s First Team recently won the York and District First Division 2021 for the 10th time in the club's 43 year history.

The club has a bar, lounge and function room, and boasts a thriving social scene, too. The bar is open every night, with early afternoon opening at weekends when Sky Sports and BT Sports matches are shown on big screens.

Wigginton Squash Club is mainly volunteer-run and sponsored by Hunters Estate Agents. Ian Dunlop of Hunters Estate Agents, said: “We just enjoy the club and think it’s

great for the village. It was built by village members originally, they put together the foundations of the club, and from the hard work of a lot of volunteers, it’s because of them that it’s survived so long, and it’s a great place to go.”

There are over 140 full playing members and with, gym, day, junior and social members, the club is nearing 400.

For those who need to start from scratch or want to improve their technique, coaching is available for all ages and abilities at different times throughout the week.

If you live locally to the club in Haxby, Wigginton, Shipton or Strensall, keep an eye out for a flyer in this month’s magazine for more information.

TOP FIVE HIGHLIGHTS FOR A TRIP TO MAURITIUS

This month, Kerry Lakey from Savannah Travel, gives us the low down on Mauritius.

In October 2021, just days after they re-opened their borders, I travelled to the Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius. Like many travelling since the pandemic, I was apprehensive, but as soon as I arrived all my concerns faded and I was so happy to be travelling again. Mauritius is most thought of for its white sandy beaches and warm blue waters but my week exploring the island with tour operator Pure Breaks gave me some amazing opportunities to see how the island nation is re-opening with a focus on sustainable travel, and how they hope to share this with visitors.

When arriving at the Lagoon Attitude Hotel, located in the north of the island, it appears to be a typical beach resort but some of the initiatives being implemented from removing the traditional ‘Nespresso’ coffee pods and sachets of sugar from guest rooms and replacing them with a ‘bulk store’ where guests are free to visit any time and select from

a wide range of teas, coffees and cookies, to their own eco-friendly sunscreen available for guests. Our time out on the water with their marine biologist showed us some of the ongoing projects to help protect the island and try to recover the coral reef.

My second accommodation recommendation is the Heritage Awali & Heritage Le Telfair, two hotels in one resort. One with an African feel that’s perfect for families, the other is built in colonial style in a peaceful setting by the river. There’s an excellent choice of dining across the resort and I was blown away by the food and the setting of the Gin’Ja restaurant.

If you are looking to really get away from it all, ask us about the unique Otentic Eco Tent Experience and choose from a river or mountain top experience in the heart of nature.

•Take a trip to Ile Aux Aigrettes, a conservation project preserved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and just a short boat ride away from the south coast. Be on the lookout for the rare pink pigeon, endangered skinks, the Mauritius Kestrel and of course, the giant tortoises.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Kale and feta sweet potato rösti crust quiche Instead of a typical pastry crust, the base of this quiche is made with grated sweet potato, pressed into an oven dish and baked until crispy and magnificent. Kale, chives and feta fill the centre, bathed in rich eggs and cream. Leftovers are delicious for brunch the next day too. For more sweet potato recipes, visit www.seasonalspuds.com.

PREP TIME: 30 MINUTES

Ingredients

For the crust:

COOKING TIME: 1 HOUR For the filling:

•Butter, for greasing •2 large, sweet potatoes (750g) •1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika •Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper •35g gluten-free plain flour •2 medium free-range eggs, separated and lightly whisked

•3 medium free-range eggs •150ml double cream •30ml whole milk •Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper •Small bunch of chives, finely chopped •125g feta cheese •100g Cavolo Nero, stems removed and roughly chopped

Method

3. Put the potatoes into a bowl and add the smoked paprika and season well.

Add in the flour and 1 of the whisked eggs and mix really well to combine.
