It's been a turn-up for the history books and here, at YLL HQ, we're breathing a collective sigh of relief to be going back to some resemblance of normal.

It seems crass to run headfirst into our first issue after the pandemic without taking the time to remember the loved ones we've lost and the key workers and volunteers who have faced the virus head-on, to take care of the rest of us.

I'm humbled and grateful. I've thanked my lucky stars. To be healthy, employed, and living with a loved one were all things I was taking for granted before COVID-19. It's put things into perspective, and there are certainly some elements of lockdown life that I won't be giving up in a hurry.

As York and the rest of the UK carefully step back into the

world, the Local Linkers are making a conscious effort to support the local businesses that bolster up the economy around us. It's been tough and there's still a way to go but we're ready to get this show back on the road and navigate our way through the new normal with you, however that may look.

The highlight of this delightful short walk is a two-mile section alongside the River Derwent. The entire river is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and abounds with a variety of wildlife, both in the water and the nearby fields. The walk also circles Sutton Wood, a large area of semi-natural woodland that’s a further refuge for wildlife with good displays of wildflowers in spring. An optional addition to the main walk (italic type at point 6 in the directions) provides a short circuit of the wood. Please note that sections of the route alongside the river can be subject to flooding, especially in winter. Otherwise, most of the route is easy underfoot with little mud.

Directions

1 Starting from Newton on Derwent (go to point 4 for a Sutton upon Derwent start) outside of the Half Moon pub, go north (right if facing away from the pub) along the street. As the main road goes right at a WW1 hero’s memorial stone, take a left down Mask Lane. Continue down this long straight lane, through farmland and passing a seat, to eventually arrive at a gate. Go through this and continue on a short grassy path down the bank to arrive at a footpath signpost beside the river.

Getting there

the riverside and so this is the recommended route unless the river is in flood. Continue alongside the river going through further gates and soon nearing a wood (Sutton Wood) away to the left. At the far end of the wood ignore a signed path left leading into it and stay alongside the river. The riverside path eventually becomes a track passing alongside boat moorings to reach the road at Sutton Bridge.

2 Turn left and follow the river downstream with a field to the left. You’ll arrive at a bridge over a ditch and a gate. Continue with the river to your right into an area of young trees with farm buildings soon visible up the bank to the left. As you emerge from the trees go through a kissing gate to the left (not adjacent metal gate) slightly away from the river.

Ahead is a further kissing gate and a metal gate.

4 Go left, away from the bridge following the roadside pavement, soon passing a derelict mill and then Sutton upon Derwent Church to the right (for the shop and pub in Elvington turn right over the bridge). Where the main road goes sharp right into the village go straight ahead (left) on Sandhill Lane (to visit the Vincent Arms keep on the main road).

Continue on Sandhill Lane taking care on the verge when the pavement ends beyond the houses. Follow it around a left bend (ignore signed footpath to right) to arrive at a footpath sign on the left by a farm track entrance.

3 The official right of way goes through the kissing gate and along the edge of the field with the fence to the right. However, most walkers go through the metal gate down the grassy path to return to

The best starting point, with (With optional 1¼ mile plenty of roadside parking, is Main Street in Newton on (30 minute) addition) Derwent but it’s also possible to start from Sutton upon Derwent parking on Sandhill Lane. Newton on Derwent is just over nine miles from York taking the A1079 and turning right at Wilberfoss, then right again into the village. There is no public transport to the village but bus no.36 offers an infrequent service from York to Sutton upon Derwent.

Refreshments There are pubs at Sutton upon Derwent (Vincent Arms) and Newton on Derwent (Half Moon). There is also a pub and village shop in Elvington, both less than a ten minute walk from point 4 of the walk directions.

What to see The quiet River Derwent is a haven for wildlife. While scouting for this walk, swift, house and sand martins and an egret were seen overhead and large gaggles of greylag geese seen on the water. The riverside meadows have a varied flora which is at its best before the hay is cut in summer. Sutton Wood contains a mix of deciduous and conifer trees and has a good display of flowers in spring including wild daffodils. The fertile farmland around both villages is used to grow a wide range of crops including fields of carrots and peas.

A picture is worth a thousand words Local York artist, Karen Winship, has been rather busy throughout the pandemic creating beautiful #portraitsforNHSheroes.

The free portraits of NHS frontliners pay tribute to the amazing work they’ve been doing.

It all started in the south of England when Tom Croft, an artist from Oxford, offered a free portrait to the first NHS worker to contact him on Instagram.

Since then hundreds of frontliners have had their portraits painted by hundreds of artists.

What started as 10 free portraits soon became 25 after Karen was featured on BBC Look North and had a huge amount of interest.

Karen said: “It’s been great and they’ve been received really well, I don’t know all of the people in the pictures, but you feel close to them when you learn about the lovely stories behind the portraits. I sent them a copy or a photograph of what I’ve done, and they’ve all been absolutely made up with them - they’ve shared them on social media, kept them

The paintings will be on display through local resident’s windows on St Thomas Close, York from 12-26 July before going on display at York Art Gallery from 1 August.

YORKSHIRE’S GOT TALENT Hannah Wakelam, a musical theatre performer from York and the organiser of Yorkshire’s Got Talent in aid of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre’s Raise the Roof appeal, has announced that the competition will be on stage for a grand finale.

Current entrants knew about the £100 prize money and county-wide coverage of their performances but didn’t know that they would get to perform in front of a live audience once the theatre re-opens.

Hannah said: “It’s because of my experience on stage at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre that I’m following my dream to be a professional performer. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am now without this community venue and all it does for local young talent. This contest is just my way of saying thank you and I’d love other

young performers to learn about the opportunities they can find here.”

Local I hope everyone reading is safe and well after what has been a testing time for all. The absence of Your Local Link has probably been just as well for my column given the lack of sport during the last few months. I don’t think anyone would have enjoyed me updating them on the Belarusian Premier League, which was optimistically described as the only ‘top-level’ European Football taking place during Lockdown.

Personally, I used lockdown to record a few more interviews with York City legends for the York Hospital Radio podcast, utilising the phenomenon of Zoom. I received lots of positive comments regarding the Gary Mills double episode. The finished product was pleasing but, rest assured, I was just like everyone else using Zoom and have vivid memories of making hand signals and mouthing ‘your audio is switched off Gary.’

Other memorable moments included Jon Parkin informing me, as we had connection problems, that ‘we aven’t got owt like fibre down ere in Barnsley.’

Speaking of York City, at the time of writing, they have been unbeaten since the start of March. Ok, they haven’t won since then either, but the longest season in history should be coming to a close as you read this after the much anticipated National League North Play-offs. The final decision of which was heavily influenced by the club’s UK Trending #promote2 campaign. Of course, had there been no play-offs it would have been typical for York City to be the answer to a quiz question of ‘Who was top of the league but still didn’t get promoted?’

I saw someone say the National League was ‘basically a list of places

you don’t want to have to go for a meeting’ but I am sure Steve Watson will happily take a meeting in Souilhull in September, or whenever the new season may kick-off. Let’s hope that by the time this column comes out York City have ensured the last competitive game at Bootham Crescent has seen the club achieve promotion. It’s just a huge shame the game will be behind closed doors and supporters won’t be able to cheer them on in the ground.

It’s been interesting to see sports get creative with live football and cricket having optional crowd noises and cardboard cutouts to replicate supporters. I wonder if at the cricket there will be photographs of people dressed as Spongebob or Fred Flinstone as is normal in places like the Western Terrace at this time of year.

Some very special people put the magazine together and I am proud to have played a part in it over the past decade. Soldiering on through lockdown The unforeseen social distancing and lockdown measures have understandably posed a lot of challenges for YAC. From a medical perspective, COVID-19 has placed an incredible strain on cancer services in York, and throughout the UK. June reports from Cancer Research UK revealed that more than 2 million people have been waiting for screening, tests and treatments since lockdown began. YAC’s mission has been to continue supporting those awaiting treatment, as well as providing added assurance to families in a safe and socially distanced manner.

Just one of the ways in which YAC has shown its support is by continuing its minibus service. This puts drivers on the front line to transport patients in North Yorkshire to radiotherapy appointments in Leeds. Drivers Ian Stevenson and Neil Johnson have been taking strict measures to comply with government guidelines, including maintaining a 2m distance and sanitising the vehicles as often as possible.

While the number of daily users has taken a hit during lockdown, YAC’s long-term plans are to fund a new minibus to support even more patients and their families.

Continuing with research Lab time may have been restricted throughout COVID-19, but this has not stopped YAC’s scientists from carrying out essential research. Dr Jenny Hinley and Dr Simon Baker, both of whom conduct research at the University of York’s Jack Birch Unit, have been continuing their work from home.

YAC funds the Jack Birch Unit’s research, which primarily looks at bladder cancer and how healthy cells can become cancerous. Both Jenny and Simon have been working tirelessly to carry on with their work, attending

Even more promising, YAC’s researchers are now heading back into the ‘office’ at the University of York.

Professor Jenny Southgate, director of the Jack Birch Unit, oversaw the setup of the socially distanced laboratory, which officially opened its doors on 8th June. Though numbers will be restricted, the team will be joined by two new PhD students and a Master’s student, who will all contribute to the study of bladder cancer.

Out and about with fundraising As a charity that relies heavily on mass participation events, YAC has struggled with the cancellation of many fundraising activities, such as the Jane Tomlinson York 10K. But all is not lost – outdoor events without crowds have proven to be a hugely successful fundraising method throughout COVID-19.

According to York-based fundraising research group, We Are Massive, the biggest ‘growers’ in fundraising events are treks, hikes and golf challenges.

All of these outdoor events allow participants to raise funds while maintaining a safe distance apart from one another.

Former Huntington Comprehensive School deputy head Gordon Fee was diagnosed with lung cancer mesothelioma in 2018. The 80-year-old was a keen runner and had taken part in the 2018 York 10K before his diagnosis.

The YAC team sent Gordon and his family on a short break, and this year, his daughter Lizzie has stepped into Gordon’s running shoes. She said: “I was gutted when the Manchester 10K was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Then I read about someone running a marathon in their garden.” In true Captain Tom spirit, Lizzie and nine of her friends took part in a relay marathon over Zoom, with some friends even running with a baby buggy!

The team had an original fundraising target of £100 but were thrilled to raise £2,500 – and complete a total of 55 miles.

s s um l um l P P of of l i l i er er P P A A Here’s a scenario that may be familiar to those who have a few plum trees, especially one or more of that old favourite Victoria.

You’ve waited all summer for the plums to be ready and now the first fruits are dripping off the tree. You pick one of the juiciest looking and take a bite but instead of the sweet, rich, flavour anticipated your taste buds are hit by an unpleasant, acrid, tang. Looking at the bitten fruit you notice much of the centre around the stone

is mushy and flecked and spotted dark brown. If you’re very unlucky you might also notice a small pinkish caterpillar with a brown head.

The caterpillar is that of the plum moth (Latin name Grapholita funebrana).

Fortunately, face-to-face meetings are rare; unless you have an early cropping plum tree it’s usually only the damage caused by the moth that’s encountered.

Plum moth has a life cycle similar to the codling moth that plagues apple trees. Adult plum moths are on the wing through the summer but mainly lay eggs on baby fruitlets in June and July.

Usually laid singly, these hatch in about ten days, the tiny caterpillars burrowing into the developing plum to feed on

the flesh. It takes a few weeks for the caterpillars to mature after which they exit through a small hole to form silken cocoons in bark crevices or similar hiding places. Here they overwinter before pupating in late spring as a new generation.

Plum moth is not an easy pest to counter. The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) webpage on plum moth (https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/ profile?pid=554) lists several sprays available to non-commercial growers, but for those of us avoiding pesticide use control options are limited. Even those prepared to spray will find it difficult to cover large trees.

Another measure suggested by the RHS is pheromone traps. These should be deployed in June and July during peak moth activity. Traps are open-sided boxes with a sticky sheet on the bottom. On this sits the pheromone pellet. This emits a synthetic copy of the scent given off by female plum moths. The aim is to lure male moths so that they adhere to the sticky sheet before mating. This is fine in theory but it’s important to note

commercial growers use traps only as an ‘indicator’, not as a control. If there are female moths around already it’s just as probable tempting in more males will make for a big plum moth party and, potentially, more egg-laying.

A simpler option that may have some effect is to disrupt the moth’s life.

The best way to do this is to remove damaged fruits before they mature either burying deep in the compost heap or placing in the green bin.

This may catch some caterpillars and reduce next year’s generation.

Unfortunately, unlike codling moth affected apples, developing plums afflicted by the moth show few external signs of damage. It’s only as plums mature that indications of potential infestation become visible. Premature ripening is a tell-tale warning sign. Plums ready early or first should be eaten with caution. Best to take an exploratory nibble rather than a big bite! Although there’s no guarantee, later ripening fruit is far less likely to have been visited by the moth. Damsons and later cropping varieties are also generally less affected.

emotional support, advice about rights and benefits and a specialist service for young carers aged from five. There is also a free Carers Emergency Card scheme which activates support for the person being cared for should the carer themselves have an emergency.

Specialist receptionists and staff work with other organisations in the city and, if York carers Centre can’t help you directly, you will be connected to the most appropriate service for support. Shoulder Pain and Ultrasound This month Sarah Rayner, Lead Physiotherapist and Musculoskeletal Sonographer at Yorkshire Sports Medicine, talks us through shoulder pain and ultrasound.

Shoulder pain and weakness can have a real impact on day to day life. Shoulder pain has become more common over lockdown as we have had more time to be involved in gardening and DIY tasks. It is likely to affect many others now as we are able to return to sport and the gym.

Finally, accidents and falls can lead to unexpected shoulder problems.

The majority of shoulder disorders can be diagnosed by our specialist physiotherapists or sports medicine doctors at Yorkshire Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy Clinic. This is done by listening to how the pain started and what the effects of this have been on your day to day life. Following this, we will examine the movement in your shoulder as well as perform some special tests on the tendons and ligaments.

Shoulder disorders tend to fall into one of three groups – a painful shoulder, a stiff shoulder and finally an unstable or loose shoulder. This article sets out to discuss the painful shoulder.

Painful shoulder Pain is the most common feature of most shoulder problems. It is usually

gradual in onset, developing slowly over days or weeks. In these situations, the pain is often related to a problem with the tendons in the shoulder rubbing or catching on the bone in the top part of the shoulder. This can lead to pain especially when lifting the arm away from the side of the body.

Sometimes weakness can develop, usually related to performing overhead tasks.

When this becomes an issue, it may be a sign of a more serious tendon injury. To get to the bottom of this will often need an ultrasound scan.

Ultrasound Scans This form of imaging is essential in getting to a diagnosis in cases of painful and weak shoulders. An ultrasound scan does not involve any harmful radiation.

Ultrasound scans are an excellent way of assessing shoulder problems following a clinical assessment. An ultrasound scan also has an important role in examining a shoulder after an injury when some movement tests are

just too painful. Ultrasound scans are very good at viewing the shoulder for tears of the rotator cuff tendons, rubbing of the tendons (impingement), inflammations (bursitis) and calcium deposits. One advantage that an ultrasound scan has over MRI scans is that it is dynamic and therefore can assess the shoulder as it moves.
