YORK LIFE

Don’t be fooled Despite April being synonymous with trick-playing (well, the first 12 hours of it, at least) we’re pretty sure you’ll emerge on the other side of the month unscathed. We’ll keep you right, filled to the brim as this issue is with the latest local info, news, event listings, and general York-based silliness, so no prankster will be able to get the better of you. Mind you, April is also known for showers (despite figures showing there is more chance of rain during August – what’s that all about?) but we’ve got you covered there. Literally. If you get caught in a downpour while, say, attending one of the events or shows listed herein, simple open the mag along the centre pages and place on your head. Hey presto... instant rain hat.

GINI

TRACY

But that, incredibly, isn’t all. Our regular Time Travel feature will take you on an adventure of imagination as we consider lumps and bumps (no rude jokes, please), while the Treasure Hunt will get you out of the house to enjoy a fresh spring day as you search for clues and hidden details. Our columnists are, as ever, packed with opinions that they need to let out to the entire city, while our experts have the low-down on all matters gardening, marketing, beauty, and legal. With us by your side, you’ll swat all April-related troubles aside. And spiders. If you roll up the mag to make a... you get the idea. High five!

YORK LIFE

and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

So far this morning, I have made several distinctly non-urgent phone calls to friends, sorted out my stash of cards-to-send-at-some-futurepoint, ironed several tea towels, and re-listened to a programme about Beethoven. All because I know I have to write this column by lunchtime. Yes, I am one of life’s Great Procrastinators. And I am not alone. According to Professor Tim Pychyl, a psychologist who belongs to the Procrastination Research Group (yes, there is such a thing), procrastination is “the biggest problem in education today”. Being a grammar pedant, I’d say that bad spelling and grammar are a far bigger problem - but I’m only a former academic (and, therefore, one of the worst procrastinators of all, according to Professor Psycho), so what do I know?

What I do know, though, is that moving house - again - is the best possible excuse to procrastinate for the whole of eternity. My new (in fact, rather old) house has every conceivable problem. It is, in fact, currently uninhabitable. It needs re-wiring, re-plumbing, damp-proofing and re-roofing. Redecorating and fitting a kitchen are the relatively small jobs. Our possessions are all in boxes and bags (unmarked, naturally). The school uniform is lost in transit. There is only one thing for it: the Farrow and Ball colour chart. Old White or Bone in the bathroom? I know I really need to ring a plumber who can make the bath taps work but what about Slipper Satin above the picture rail?

This reminds me that I urgently need to Google “Farrow and Ball make room look bigger”. And then I must go to the Man in the Market for some spring flowers which I need to plant in someone else’s garden. And as a friend gave me some vouchers for the M&S cafe, this might involve a small detour for a large Americano. This is all strongly reminiscent of being a student, when the thought of revision always gave me a sudden urge to give the insides of the cupboards their annual clean. On the way home to try to sort out my plumbing, there are further traps for the Unwary Procrastinator (Amnesty Books, Oxfam Books and Ken Spelman). By then, it will be lunchtime, and the column will be

unwritten and the taps will still not turn. However, I will have added a few more books to the thousand or so currently stored by the same Kind Friend who gave me the coffee vouchers. Which, of course, means that it will have been a very useful morning.

York is, unfortunately, the worst possible place to procrastinate. If I lived in Hull or somewhere, I would undoubtedly be a best-selling novelist with a perfect home because there would be nothing else to do. I would have summoned several plumbers to sort out my house, just to have someone to talk to.

York, though, is a procrastinator’s paradise. All those lovely charity shops on Goodramgate, where I can find the bits of missing china which my inherited Wedgwood set lacks. Barnitts, where I can spend half an hour in the Kilner jar department, imagining that I am a domestic goddess (who needs a kitchen when they can have a little set of jam-jar covers?) Love Cheese, where I can think about all the tradesmen I could pay for if only I didn’t have a Black Bomber addiction. According to Professor Psycho, there are six things that procrastinators (generally people who are “impulsive, prone to perfectionism, burdened by other people’s expectations of them, and scared of failure”) can do to try to overcome their procrastination problem. When I see that “practise mindfulness” is the first one, I decide to put off reading this until some later stage. This is because there are far more important things to do. Such as stripping walls, ringing electricians, sanding floors and, um, writing a column. But meanwhile … grey-hued whites or pink-hued ones? Ammonite or Bone? I’ll think about it when I’ve had another coffee.

I want my best friend back. S, Elivington

I MISS MY BEST FRIEND

S, It’s a well known fact that people change. This fact is usually planted firmly at the back of our minds until said person goes ahead and changes right before your eyes. Cut your friend some slack. How do you know that you would react any differently if it was you in her circumstance? In the meantime I suggest you’re honest with her. Explain you would like to spend a bit of girly time with her like you used to. If she shuns your offer, then you have a stronger view of where you stand and it might be appropriate to say something to her. Six months is still early days after all. Wait it out.

Bit of an awkward situation you’re in here T. Not entirely your fault. Your friend made the foolish decision to spend money on your behalf without double checking it was what you wanted to do. I have no doubt that their intentions were good -but it doesn’t make the situation much better for you. I don’t like to see people left out of pocket for misunderstandings so here are my suggestions. You could make up with your dad, if the argument wasn’t that serious and take him as intended. Life’s too short to hold grudges over small falling outs. However, if you really, really don’t want to take your dad or go the match - why not get in touch with your friend, see if he can sell them on and maybe offer to go halves with him on the money you lose out on. Alternatively, maybe someone else could go with your dad? That way you can pass on the cost too. I know it’s not really your fault but you planted the seed, and it feels cruel to punish your friend for their well meant mistake. Hope things work out okay, Daph x

People often develop unhealthy crushes on celebrities because they’re looking for qualities that they don’t have in their own lives. It’s worth taking some time to think about what these might be - so you understand why you feel the way you do. Remember that you're only seeing one side to your crush, it’s not actually who they are - and realistically - it’s never going to happen. It’s good that you are aware that your obsession is bad for you and are looking to sort it out. Social media makes Ronnie’s life instantly available to you. Try to stop checking his twitter constantly - and instead endeavour to fill your time with other hobbies. Watching his latest series has obviously brought him to the forefront of your mind, this should subside with a little bit of effort on your part. If things don’t get better, in time, consider booking an appointment with your doctor to talk things over. Daph x

UNDER APPRECIATED MUM

It’s okay to expect a little bit of appreciation on Mother’s Day, traditionally, a meal out or a bunch of flowers is pretty standard practice. Somewhere along the line your kids decided that you wouldn’t care if they didn't celebrate it in the way most do. There’s a couple of ways to approach this without looking too self righteous. First off, gush about what a lovely Mother’s day so and so had. How great are her kids, that’s so lovely - you would love to do something like that with your kids? Alternatively start a game of Chinese whispers with the intention of your kids finding out that you were little bit put out. However bare in mind if you’ve previously asked them not to make a fuss - they might just be doing what they thought you wanted. I'm sorry you had a rubbish Mother’s day - no mum deserves that. I imagine that when your kids realise you were disappointed they will be ashamed. If they don’t realise, I would bin them off and find yourself a better pair! Love Daphne

19TH FEB 20TH MAR

Every time you make a plan or come up with a new idea, something goes wrong and you find yourself wondering why you bothered. Best advice here is to chill out, let things evolve in their own time, and while life drifts by, catch up on a few box sets or read a couple of books. If you can relax, partners and spouses can relax with you. This might be easier said than done, however, and there is likely to be a major

argument sometime around the 15th to the 18th which will clear the air, while at the same time also making it clear that there do need to be a few lifestyle changes brought on line during the spring and summer months ahead. In so many areas you will feel that your hands are tied, but at least you will now start looking at ways in which you can undo the knots.

TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST MAR

of risks, no harm done! Some division of family loyalties looks like being resolved to your satisfaction, especially if someone who has been causing you a problem buggers off and causes someone else a problem instead. Bright confident moods!

April can be a great month for Taureans, providing you’re on the move, embracing changes, and looking forwards rather than backwards. It can also be a very frustrating month if you’re stuck in a rut – so the challenge here is to get out of the rut. If this means breaking a few rules and acting on impulse rather than logic, then it’s still the way to go.

GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN April will be a very encouraging

month, especially for those looking for new homes or new moods of goodwill beneath existing roofs. One way or the other, you should see some change for the better in domestic routines, and this is a very positive period for all forms of property negotiation. On a local level, travel opportunities towards the month’s end look likely.

CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL A very positive time for following career and business ambitions, and if you feel inclined to take a couple

LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG Ladies of the sign find purpose in sisterhoods and all forms of feminine activity. Some charity work may enhance your social profile. Romantic aspects are quite zingy, especially for unattached males who are fed up

of being unattached males. Some worthwhile career gains made on the 17th put you in a good mood for the rest of the month.

VIRGO 24TH AUG - 22ND SEP This is a time in which you’ll be looking forwards, with particular focus on where you might be and what you might be doing three or four years up the road. There will be interesting and exciting conversations with lovers and partners, and although that is all they are at this point in time, they do give you some focus and put a

Someone will be eager to share their good news with you, so do please show a bit of enthusiasm and don’t rain on their parade. Work routines are just that, but they are routines that you are familiar with and they pose no threat. Finances quite good compared to any time over the last year, and it looks like you might be settling a few old debts.

You’ll be doing some spring cleaning – not just around the house, but also in your heart and mind. If there have been some emotional tensions, these should now start to ease, and indeed, you’ll find partners and spouses eager and willing to please. Singletons will be on the receiving end of a lot of attention, but will this be from the right person?

SCORPIO 24TH OCT - 22ND NOV News from distant places (possibly concerning pregnancies or births) tie in with reunions, either taking place or being arranged. It’s a busy month where all social aspects are concerned, and there will probably be a boost in job responsibilities around the 9th or 10th. Electro-mechanical problems around the 22nd upset your budgeting.

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV-21ST DEC Rather a philosophical mood sits upon your shoulders at this point in time. If there are a few problems worrying you, they probably concern other people, and there’s not much you can do about them. There is healing energy around you, and this could well be a time for putting some long standing wrongs to right.

Gentlemen face a challenge. Do they face up to a partner and make it clear that they (the partner) cannot have what they want, or do they retreat in silence to avoid a confrontation? Option two looks the most attractive, but option one is definitely the way to go. Make it clear that you are open to compromise, but someone else has got to meet you half way first.

If you love nothing better then getting together with friends on a Sunday morn and belting a ball about a pitch, perhaps you should do so with a lot more like-minded people. The York Sunday Morning Football League, sponsored by Fastpack Ltd., is currently looking for new teams to join them for fixtures each week. This could be a great way for your squad to hone their talents, as well as making new friends and facing new challenges. Interested? n Contact Ashley Robertson on 07885561458 or email yorksundayfootball@gmail.com

WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS Would you like to join a women’s organisation that matches the amount of good deeds it does with the sheer level of fun the members enjoy? If so, you should consider the Inner Wheel Club of York Ainsty. Part of the world’s largest Women’s Service Voluntary organisation that exists in all major cities across the globe, the club is founded on friendship and personal service, meeting monthly to organise worthwhile fundraising drives and leisurely activities for the members. The Inner Wheel Club meets every third Tuesday of the month, 7pm, at the Beechwood Hotel, Shipton Road. As well as discussing how the group can use their collective might and enthusiasm to help other people, they also keep themselves well entertained. Friendship and fun are of great importance to the members, and they would love to share that with you. n If you would like to know more, call June Rose on 785674, or email juneirose20@aol.com

...what are you doing with those old winter clothes of your kids'? If you have coats, jackets, and thick jumpers that your children no longer fit in, why not do something great with them? Operation Orphan gathers unwanted clothing items and donates them to needy orphans in Eastern Europe. Their next coffee morning, where you can drop off your donations (which can include blankets, hats, gloves, and even disposable nappies), is being held at Haxby Methodist Church Hall on 22nd April, 10am-12noon. n To find out more about what is needed, call 690757 or 769034.

NOW THAT WINTER IS OVER...

WATCH OUT SCOTS (ON A SUNDAY!) If you thought that silly old rule about being able to shoot a Scottish person from the city walls on a Sunday was nothing to worry about... think again. It seems that there are still plenty of crack-shot archers in York, and it’s all thanks to Community Spirit Boxing Cub. They have an eight week archery course starting from 3rd April at the York RI, New Lane, Acomb, 5-6pm, for both children and adults. As well as being good at long ranges, they are also pretty handy close up, as they offer weekly boxing classes, too. n To find out more call 07860 561070 or target this web address: www.communityspiritboxingclub.btck.co.uk

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: TANTALISING LUMPS AND BUMPS Steady on, filthy! This feature is nothing rude, but rather a look at some of the strange bumps in the landscape in and around the city that continue to confuse and cause debate between archaeologists and historians, and possibly offer glimpses of life in the city BEFORE the Romans rocked up and claimed it.

JUS' A HILL, INNIT? At the end of 2015 we wrote about Lamel Hill in these pages, the small hill in the grounds of The Retreat that once played host to a Roundhead cannon, raining down death upon the Cavaliers in York during the Civil

War. As well as being the highest natural point in York, we also briefly mentioned the many burials that had been discovered in and around it, with some possibly dating from the Iron Age. Well Lamel Hill is not alone, but it is the best understood and excavated. Sitting just 300 metres to the east is Siward's Howe, another hill within the campus of the University of York, and very close to the bunker-like water tower. Surprisingly (considering which city we're all living in) the site has never been fully excavated, despite the evidence that it too is a burial feature.

S AL E

20

HOWE! Head along University Road after the Heslington Lane junction and then throw a quick left onto a footpath which leads directly to the base of the ominous water tower. From there you can explore the hill itself, which is surrounded by trees, to get a sense of the size. Prehistoric flint artefacts have been found in the area, suggesting humans have been living around here for thousands of years, and one of the main theories for the existence of the Siward's Howe is that it is a Neolithic burial mound. The word Howe comes from the Old English hlaew

meaning a place of burial, but due to the lack of exploration only one burial has ever been discovered around it... accidentally, during tree planting in 1980. Again, very surprisingly, those remains were never dated, meaning the person could have been from as far back as the Stone Age or more recently from the Medieval period.

RULERS OUT Okay, so we've got the mysterious Siward's Howe to the east, and Lamel Hill near to that. Grab a map, drop a ruler onto it, and line those two hills up. If you follow the straight line created by the alignment all the way to the west you'll eventually land on The Mount and the rear gardens of

The ever-useful 1852 map of York (yorkmaps. net/1852) shows that this area includes a Tumulus, the name for an Anglo-Saxon burial mound. Investigation into the lump's true origins are lacking, but it sits just a stone's throw from the site where the remains of dozens of Roman gladiators were discovered on Driffield Terrace. That site, which was alongside the main road into Roman York – today Tadcaster Road – would have been highly sought after burial real estate, and therefore probably reused by the Anglo-Saxons after the Empire departed, adding weight to the significance of the tumulus. Also, did the Romans earmark the site for Gladiator burial because of pre-

existing use by the native Britons?

WEIRD

Isn't it? The alignment of these three sites might be complete coincidence, but Celtic cultures were known to set out important religious places in a line, often in view of each other, which, before the city grew to envelop them, they would have been. Interestingly, if you follow the line marked on the map it passes through the end of Mill Mount, also a slight hill, where once sat a Windmill. Was the windmill built there on another possibly pre-used significant mount?

A lot of questions, and a lot of conjecture, but it is fascinating to start thinking about the people who lived in the city before it was any kind of a city, and how the traces they left behind were reused again and again by successive occupants. So the next time you try to remember what Nandos was before it was a Nandos, instead try imagining what that bump in the landscape was.

YORK LIFE

The Mount School. This area is also risen up from the rest of the city and, although hidden from view today, contains another tantalising lump.

YORK LIFE GIG OF THE MONTH

WHERE: Fibbers WHEN: 19th April INFO: Psychedelic Rock’n’rollers next door, The Strawberries, played Leeds fest last year on the Jack Rocks stage and have supported the likes of The Courteeners, Kooks and Blossoms. They last graced York alongside local favourites, Hello Operator. It would be wise to spend a fiver (while it still costs a fiver) to see them.

I am a natural goddess in charge of her own body, hear me speak For most teenage girls taking the pill seems like a rite of passage... I started taking the progesterone only pill when I was 17 at the start of a long term relationship. Since then I can only describe my six year stint on the pill as a very long period of whinging to my friends about what side effects I thought I was suffering from. I was an extremely carefree 16 year old with a sunny disposition. I'd been lucky enough to go through my adolescent years without a single spot or any other hormonal side effects. When I first got together with my exboyfriend (and coincidentally, started taking the pill) I was a weeping mess - if he didn't text me back for a few hours I was paranoid and upset. I

would go off at the slightest thing. My mum and I basically figured I was love sick and couldn't deal with my ridiculously deep feelings for another human being. Bless me! Hindsight makes me think this probably wasn't the case.

“I have to quickly explain that, no, I don’t want a baby just yet” I calmed down on my poor exboyfriend (thank you - appreciate your patience - although I still think it's not totally unjustified to give me a bell when you plan on staying out all night

thank you very much.) But I started to feel uneasy in other situations of my life. I decided that all of my friends hated me, I wasn't very good at my job, felt incredibly insecure and upset a lot of the time and struggled to get out of bed and deal with my life. When I went to the doctors NOBODY asked me what contraceptive I was on - we decided I was suffering with anxiety and depression and a good old bout of Citalopram would sort me out. My wonderful boss arranged some hypnotherapy (check out Angie DoigThorne) and to be honest I couldn't have done it without both of these things. They worked for me, I was very lucky. This Christmas, I was in my usual pattern of whining about being spotty,

Fashion City York returns for a week of fashion focused events celebrating the talent and retail oppurtunities we have right on our own door step. The night that has caught my eye is Dr Sketchy’s Present: Strike a Pose. An evening of life drawing, fashion, drinking and burlesque. KILLER COMBO. The event will celebrate a century of British Vogue and life models will be styled in iconic outfits from the roaring twenties, through the swinging sixties and beyond. Art materials provided. .

I can’t believe I spent six years dealing with the side effects of a hormonal contraceptive because I thought it was the ‘done thing’. I’ve spent a long time feeling pretty unnatractive, moody and irritable without stopping to think about what might have been causing it. I won’t be going back on it. Period. As I've chatted to people about it they've kind of been like ‘oh cool what are you on now’ and I'm like T I L E S • B AT H R O O M S ‘actually nothing!’ And then I have to quickly explain that no, I don't want a baby just yet - it's more about me as a human being trying to be happy do my own thing.

To be honest it paled in comparison to the side effects that I was experiencing. And so I had an epiphany. What if I stop taking the pill and I go back to being my chirpy 16 year old self because heaven knows I miss her and wish I still had her outlook on life. TREASURE HUNT

With the reopening of the Jorvik Viking Centre this month, we wanted to get out and about... Norse style. This month the Treasure Hunt will take in the old heart of Viking York, taking you along Coppergate and down Walmgate. So don your armour, brush your beard, and prepare to march!

Start down by the river outside of the King’s Arms pub (yeah, the one that floods). • What date does the pub boast about? • Head up King Street. This was once one of the main river streets leading from the Viking port into the heart of the trading outpost. And hey, if you need disabled access who should you contact? • Which band are remembered on this street?

STEP 3

Cross over Picadilly (which has only been there for 100 years) onto Pavement. • Under which black horse was some Viking era human poo discovered? • When was the Golden Fleece first mentioned in the city archives?

Cross over the road onto Coppergate. It gets it’s name as this was the street of the cup makers in Viking times. • Check out the old building which is now ‘Urban’. When was it built? • What Chambers were erected in 1904? • How much does the pub around here weigh? • Which regiment has a church on the street?

STEP 2

STEP 1

YORK LIFE

STEP 4

Swing a right down Fossgate. • Looking for another grand old building (now a place possible frequented by bunnies), when was it built? • Whose passage? • Which hall boasts two frolicking unicorns?

STEP 5 Cross over Foss Bridge. If you look to the right you can spy Clifford’s Tower. Try to ignore it though – the castle and hill wouldn’t have existed in Viking times. Anyway, continue along Walmgate, which was a busy Viking trading street. • What gets shovelled around here? • Could be a disaster, having a nursery next door to a... what? • St. Denys church has been here since BEFORE the Vikings arrived, but which resident of the graveyard now shares his resting place with a tree?

Continue along the street. • There is a castle along here these days, but who lives there? • Which publication now resides in vastly reduced lodgings on this street? • Which brewery taught a big bird to spread out? • To get to the National Centre for Early Music, head for which building?

Keep going... • In which year was John STEP 7 Bowes Morrell born? • You’ve finally made it to the end of the street by Walmgate Bar And lo! you can have a coffee in the Gatehouse cafe. But, wait... before you go: what was the rent for living in the bar in 1376.

Yay, well done! You just walked around what was once the centre of Jorvik, and in fact some of the shops along Walmgate (such as Viking Pizza) are sitting on the exact same plots of land, with the same dimensions, on which Viking shops once sat 1200 years ago. Now turn around and head to the Jorvik Viking Centre. It smells great.

Now go forth and explore more!

TAKE A HOLIDAY FROM With the summer approaching, are you already planning your getaway? If holiday BORING HOLIDAYS plans are in full swing, why not take a trip to somewhere a little different this year? Here are a few “interesting” destinations.

This Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean boasts the northernmost city in the world: Longyearbyen. Also polar bears, reindeer, and a seed vault which backs up all of the world’s crops. Forget tanned drunkards in a Spanish beach resort – hang out with damn polar bears! Also, at this time of year it is almost constantly daylight, so there is good chance you’ll go psychotic with lack of sleep.

SVALBARD

NAZCA, PERU This small city near to the southern coast of Peru is known not just as one of the driest areas on the planet, but also as home to the strange Nazca lines. These huge, weird lines and shapes in the landscape can only be seen from the air, but take the forms of animals, creatures, and – according to UFO experts – ancient alien landing strips. In fact, many people believe that if we’re ever invaded by aliens, Nazca is where they will set down. Nobody has ever said that about Benidorm.

LAKE HILLIER, AUSTRALIA If you can handle the long flight, Australia is a great place to go for a holiday. You can understand the locals (just! Ha ha!), take a tour of the real Ramsey Street, and know that Vegemite is basically Marmite. However, get off the beaten track, hunt down Middle Island in the west of the continent, and you’ll discover Lake Hillier; a natural lake with year-round bright pink waters. Caused by high levels of salt and a special kind of algae, the lake would be the perfect place to match that pink bikini you bought, as well a great chance to convince people you’ve swam in the world’s biggest strawberry milkshake.

THE POLES OF INACCESSIBILITY

These are two points on the earth's surface; one being the point on land furthest from any ocean, and the point on the ocean furthest from any land. The prior is in northern China, near to the Kazakhstan border, while the latter is a spot in the Pacific Ocean, 1600 miles from Easter Island. Not only is this the point where NASA crash land all outdated satellites and space stations, but – according to horror writer H.P. Lovecraft – it is also the site of the ancient subaquatic city of R'lyeh, from where the destructive cosmic entity Cthulhu will one day awaken and destroy us all. A shot of that would look pretty cool on Instagram.

DO PTERODACTYLS EAT BEES? Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. The other day I asked my six year old daughter if she'd had a nice day. “Weeeeeeelllllll,” she started – never a good sign. “It was a bit boring actually. We didn't see any friends.” Knowing the kids had fun plans the next day, I offered: “Oh dear. Well, I'm sure you'll have a nice day yesterday. Sorry, I mean tomorrow.” Picking up on my miss-spoken error, she replied. “You know daddy, if you go yesterday, yesterday, yesterday, the fabric breaks and everyone is cats.” Now I might have had a touch of the flu (hence the confusion over what the next day was called) but what she said still blew my mind. It served as a reminder to me why I had kids in the first place. Not because I loved my wife and we both felt 'natural urges' (doing it), nor because I wanted to pass on my wealth of knowledge and

30

experience to the next generation (done in five minutes). No, because kids are mental and say awesomely random stuff. YESTERDAY If you are a creative type, have kids. They always say that all the best creative ideas have to be original, and there is no greater source of originality than a child attempting to make sense of the jumble of thoughts and feelings that bounce around their heads. Everything they say is new and weird and listening to them is exceptionally inspiring. Following the above incident of nuttiness, I imaged how indeed anyone would go “yesterday, yesterday, yesterday”. Perhaps some sort of time travel? Maybe even transcendental regression? Either way, it causes the fabric of what I assume

to be the space/time continuum to break, resulting in mass feline transformations. As a plot for a book, or even an episode of Doctor Who, it's brilliant. BEES However, it isn't just the eldest who fires my imagination into

overdrive. My oldest son, who is four this month, hint hint, has recently become very introspective and thoughtful. Fortunately he has completely bypassed the “why?” stage and moved directly to the “do pterodactyls eat bees?” stage. It's a fair question, but one that involved the difficult conversation in which I

had to break to him the news that all pterodactyls were dead. Nobody wants to have to tell their kids that. Still, it led to a joint research session in which we found out whether or not bees and dinosaurs ever co-existed. They did. Yay! 'Do pterodactyls eat bees?' will be my next unpublished children's book. My son also inspires great creative projects by casting himself as the lead role of books, films, and TV shows I didn't realise I wanted to write. The other day I walked into the living room to find he was sitting on a chair by the window, holding a chunk of LEGO which he was jabbing toward the tree in the garden. I asked what he was doing. “I got to laser the birds, daddy. Or they come in here and eat my face. PEW PEW PEW!” I sat and watched him for a while, as he determinedly murdered birds, imagining that he was in fact this planet's last line of defence against total avian domination. The trailer to that film would be immense.

smoothie, or a compost bin into which you have now placed two full human placentas, you get out of your kids what you put into them. Which is why I've convinced all three of mine that there is a Chinese family living in the basement that we don't have, that their mother is a cyborg I programmed to love them, and that daddy's morning espresso is actually a potion to stop me turning into a vampire. Meanwhile, my 22 month old son is really letting the side down. “Dada! Tractors!” and “Dada! Juice, juice, juice!” and “Mama! Booooobs!” just aren't cutting it creatively. I'll give him a few more months, but if by then he still hasn't said something that sounds like it came from an astronaut on crack, I'm writing him out of my will. I'll leave my debt and lived-in overdrafts to the other two.

SPORT REPORT

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

with Dan Tait

At certain points this season I have longed for the end of another turgid campaign from York City, but with games running out and points still up for grabs, it seems surreal that at the end of April we will know whether the Minstermen are still plying their trade in the National League, or have succumbed to a successive relegation. Feels like another month would give the team more than enough time, but with just April to go might be pushing it. Whatever the outcome, Gary Mills has to be the most optimistic manager I have ever known. With twelve games left to play, York’s

gaffer said he felt they could win all twelve matches; despite only winning six all season. That prediction came up a bit short just two games into his forecast when they drew at Sutton United, but the side have definitely being more competitive in recent times led by the ever confident Mills. In fact, had the team lost 10-0 in the first leg of the FA Trophy Semi-Final, I think Mills would probably suggest that York could force extra time in the away leg. As it is, at time of writing, York were taking a 2-1 lead to Sincil Bank having turned around an exciting game against the League leaders. Well... arguably the league leaders reserve team. That’s the Imps prerogative, but hopefully reading this the supporters of York City may still have the fighting chance of survival and a Wembley trip on the horizon.

So will York City be April fools and relegated for a second successive season, or will the great escape be celebrated? Home fixtures against Braintree Town (Saturday 1st April) and Bromley (Tuesday 4th April) look like key games, as do the visit of Gary Mills' former team Wrexham who come to Bootham Crescent on Monday 17th. Finally Forest Green Rovers, who may indeed need victory themselves for promotion, come to York for the last game of this eventful season which could have serious implications for the future of the club.

relationship, finally reached a conclusion. The Curacao international did sign on the dotted line, only to be released moments after a poor display in a club reserve game. The story seemed to go viral over the next week, much to the disgust of Gary Mills who refuted claims that it was because the club found out he wasn’t actually the brother of Southampton defender Cuco Martina. Gary said he didn’t know he even had a brother and laid the blame at the industry of the media, only to be left red faced when realising it was in fact York City’s official website who revealed this initial information.

Barton to have still been playing for them. Whatever the training is, people in Scotland are getting a little frustrated at the real lack of competitiveness of the SPL, so much so that a local paper ran ideas of how to make Celtic a little more human. Ideas ranged from having Celtic only get two points for a win, make their goal posts twice as big, make it lawful for Scott Brown to actually receive yellow cards, only let Brendan Rodgers take charge from half-time of games with the rest of the week building up to the matches be taken by former boss Ronnie Delia. My personal favourite was connecting all the Celtic players by poles, like table football.

SPORT

I recently spent some time in Scotland and got into a conversation about the Rangers caretaker manager, Graeme Murty, about how he had a great reputation as a coach. This was the same Graeme Murty who started his career, and played over 100 games, for York City. In fact when I was a junior red back in the day he did a coaching session where we played ‘Space Invaders’, which basically involved us running from one end of the club gym to another whilst he fired shots at us. If you went down like the sack of spuds I did then you were out. I wonder whether that was part of his training drills at the Ibrox club, and, if so, I would love Joey

Finally onto Boxing, and whilst next month’s Local Link will have the details of the ‘Revival of the Jorvik City’ bill at Energise Sports Centre, the latest big fight has been between Tony Bellew and David Haye. After all that build up, it actually didn’t disappoint. I was convinced the £18 cost was representative of how many seconds it would last, but credit to both guys for making it an entertaining spectacle. Clearly a ruptured Achilles hindered David Haye, a man who struggles when he has a bad toe, changed the complexion of the bout, but such is boxing the hype is now that Tony Bellew is going to take over the world. As Dillian Whyte pointed out on twitter, he beat a one legged man and now people think he is the next Muhammed Ali.

YORK LIFE

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp "It is in Apple's DNA that technology alone is not enough - it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing." Steve Jobs

our understanding of the human condition.

If you take this on board, you have a wide open goal.

residence. Whatever you do though, give them free reign.

In other words, art exists on the edge of our understanding of experience. It plays with us, it digs deep, it's about what it is to be alive.

In a famous psychological experiment, a female market researcher asked questions of men, either on a precarious suspension bridge or on a solidly built 'control' bridge. She gave her card, and it was mostly the men from the suspension bridge who called later to ask her for a date. To those men the excitement from the bridge felt like arousal over the woman.

Co-incidentally, a chap called Danny Iny recently emailed me his definition of business: "Business is about building a sustainable way of making the impact that you care about making."

I'm blessed by being friends with poet Jo Bell (thank you Facebook). You may have seen her advertising Nationwide recently on the telly. (Type 'Jo Bell Nationwide' into Google if not). Nationwide's ad agency clearly get this. "We're a bank", they said, "let's get a poet in". And by the way yes, I do hang around with the rich and famous! I'll have you know I brushed past one of the cast of Crossroads at a HiFi fair in 1978.

Then of course there's finding the right artist. Most artists are amazingly good at finding the venn diagram intersection between you and them. Just make an opportunity, advertise it, let them find you and bring their ideas to an interview.

So, how could you do this? Artists are a varied bunch. Painters and markmakers, yes. But dress designers. Architects. Carpenters. Ceramicists. Photoshoppers, 3D animators, writers, coders. Film-makers. Chefs. Glass artists. Lighting designers. Poets. Songwriters. Performers. Photographers. Perfumiers. Print makers. Sculptors. Textile artists. You can't tell me there's no-one in that list for you.

John Allsopp is a digital marketer who can get you more sales and to the top of Google by creating and managing content marketing and sales systems that build your brand, continually profit-seek and self optimise without breaking the bank or taking up all your time. Ask me how: surgemarketing.co.uk

And so it goes. Advertisers blast you with sound and excitement and then show you their deodorant, hoping you will misattribute the pleasure to their product. That's great for brands with astronomical budgets, what about the rest of us? I haven't studied art, but I do have my own definition of what it is: art is a non-scientific endeavour performed with the intention of furthering

You the business person, and the artist, are in the same game. Together, we could create something really special. Imagine the word of mouth marketing! Think of the PR! So far, however, I've never managed to persuade any client of this, even when it's screamingly obvious that's what's needed. I had a client with customers who were intelligent but older and not university educated. They needed security and valuefor-money, but every now and then they wanted to be amazed out of their socks. It was there in the research, plain as day. "Get some artists involved!" I said. Nope. Never happened.

You could commission something. You could pay someone an amount of money for a year to be your artist in

You're spending money on marketing. Open up to an art collaboration. Business and art are natural allies, it's just that few people see it. That's an opportunity.

MARSHMALLOW CROSSBOW. “Oh Stevens, could you come in here please?” Stevens enters your office, stands awkwardly, and peers nervously at you. “Perfect,” you say. “Just a step to the right, please.” He shuffles to the right. “Great. FIRE!” You lift your new Marshmallow Crossbow from under your desk, aim at his forehead, and squeeze the trigger. The soggy marshmallow (for you had already given it a good suck) slaps against his sweaty head and sticks there. Stevens recoils, staggers about a bit, and gasps. You lower your crossbow, turn to you computer screen and start tapping out an email. “That will be all, Stevens. Good day.” God, being the boss is great. n £70 from www.huckberry.com

Right now, Elon Musk’s Tesla is the undisputed champ of the all-electric and self-driving cars. However, as the latest news from BMW reveals, Tesla are about to face some very good-looking competition. This concept car, which is likely to be named the i5, will be fully electric and feature autonomous driving capabilities, along with some stunning futuristic looks. Ian Robertson, Chief of Sales and Marketing at BMW, said: “One thing we’ll see is that – as with most BMWs – you’ll know it’s one of our cars without seeing the badge.” However, put that (possibly large) wad of cash away for now, as the i5 won’t be available to buy until 2021. Come on, BMW... by then Elon Musk will have reached Mars!

First flying car now on sale

...said all the folk of Yorkshire, following Transport for London’s plans to slap an extra £10 on top of the congestion charge for older diesel cars. At the moment, the charge for driving around central London is £11.50 per day, but from October that will rise to a whopping £21.50 for older model diesels made before 2005, which tend to produce more pollution. More than twenty quid? Just to drive around London! That’s the equivalent of crossing the Humber Bridge 14.3 times (it’s just £1.50 a pop), which definitely has far better views. If you’re making the drive “darn ta Larn-don” after October, check if your car is affected at www.tfl.gov.uk

ALL MAKES & MODELS SERVICED & REPAIRED

We (humanity, that is) have been dreaming about flying cars since both cars and then planes were invented. Now, Thanks to Dutch company PAL-V, those dreams have become reality... for a price. The Liberty is a car that is also a helicopter, or maybe a helicopter that is also a car. Either way, you can drive on the roads in it, and then, after a five minute transformation to deploy the rotor blades, take to the sky! Up, up, and away! It’s no clunky compromise, either; The Liberty can reach road speeds of up 100mph, and air speeds of 120mph with a maximum altitude of 3500 metres. Wowzers! However, all this freedom will set you back in the wallet department, as the car costs £425,000. Oh. But hey, if everyone in York chips in just £2.10 each, we could buy one and fly about the city waving at you. How does that sound? Good? Go on. Please. Pweeeeeeeeeeese.....

A colour shake up could be your golden ticket to a swanky looking entrance. For smaller, narrower entrances, opt for light pastel tones to keep it feeling big and breezy. ACID LOVING PLANTS

Ericaceous plants are a group that prefer to grow in acidic (lime free) soils. They include Heathers, Pieris, Rhododendron and Azalea, Camellia and Pernettya. Although the word ericaceous is used for acid loving plants the correct term is calcifuges. If your soil is only slightly acidic then it is possible to grow a wide range of plants, apart from those requiring very alkaline conditions. The pH (level of acidity or alkalinity) can be easily measured using a home soil testing kit; if your soil is above pH 6.5 then it is unsuitable for acid loving plants. If your soil is on the alkaline side it is still possible to grow acid loving plants using raised beds filled with special ericaceous compost, or by growing the plants in containers. It is advantageous to top dress annually with more ericaceous compost and retest the pH of your soil. Lowering the acidity of a lime rich soil is difficult but chemicals such as chelated iron can be added to plants showing signs of chlorosis. Azaleas and Rhododendrons – Rhododendrons are a group of evergreen shrubs that grow from 1ft (30cm) to 20ft (6m), they flower in spring and come in a range of colours. Azaleas can be evergreen or deciduous, the evergreen ones are normally low and spreading,

they usually flower prolifically in May. The deciduous ones are taller and can grow to 6ft (180cm) or more. Deciduous azaleas normally have good autumn colours Heathers – (Calluna and Erica) it is possible to have flowers all year round with heathers, most prefer moisture retentive soil in an open sunny position. Erica carnea and its cultivars will tolerate some lime in the soil. Heathers are best planted in groups and should be given a light trim over after flowering. Camellias are evergreen shrubs that grow 6-8ft (180-240cm) with flowers in early spring. Cold winds and frost can damage buds so a sheltered site is required, it is best to avoid north or east facing aspects. Pernettya is an evergreen shrub growing to approx 3ft (90cm) tall, the white flowers in the spring are followed by round berries of various colours. They require moisture retentive soils in sun or light shade. Both male and female plants

are required to produce the berries. Pieris is another evergreen shrub that can eventually grow up to 10ft (3m) tall, they have narrow leaves and white, pink or purple bell shaped flowers but they are usually grown for their bright new foliage in spring, varying from green to crimson and bronze. They prefer a semi-shady site and are ideally suited for pots & containers. There are many cultivars with varying leaf and flower colour. Forest Flame has young leaves that start bright red and slowly turn through pink, cream and finally green. Kalmia (Beauty bush) are evergreens that flower in early summer with pink, white, purple or red flowers. They grow to around 2ft (60cm) by 2ft (60cm). All are poisonous to livestock. Other plants that prefer a neutral to slightly acidic soils include Acer, Magnolia, Hamamelis, Skimmia and Mahonia. Most good Garden Centres and Nurseries will stock a wide range of acid loving plants and should be able to offer advice. Written by Gavin Charter – Outdoor Manager (Scarborough)

Q.

Over the last few years I have grown lilies in my garden, but they always get eaten before they reach maturity. Can you help please?

The most common beetle that attacks lilies is a bright red lily beetle. They are very conspicuous and up to 8mm long, and their larvae is reddishyellow, hump-backed, and covered with a black slime. They feed on the leaves, stems, and seed pods of lilies, and also attack fritillaries, nomocharis and polygonatum "solomon's seal". From April onwards both adults and larvae feed voraciously and cause considerable damage when conditions favour them. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil and move up into lilies and other plants from late march onwards. Over several months each female lays 200-300 eggs on leaves and stems. Larvae hatch about ten days after the eggs are laid and feed for about a month before going to the soil to spin silken cocoons in which they pupate. There is normally only one adult generation each year, but overwintering adults continue to emerge from the soil up to June, so that eggs, adults, larvae and pupae may all be present throughout late spring and summer. Keep a clear watch on susceptible plants from April onwards and remove and destroy any beetles, eggs or larvae that appear.

If necessary apply a contact insecticide as soon as they are seen in the spring, and repeat the treatment later if infestations persist.

Q.

My friends at The Black Horse (Phenomenon Fred, Richco, Pidgin, and Trish) recently asked me if I could recommend a few medium shrubs for the middle of a large border.

Some of the prettiest and most desirable shrubs are in the medium size range of five to eight feet in height. Where space is no problem, many of these can be planted to create large drifts in the centre of a border. In smaller gardens, where space is limited, any of the shrubs listed below will make an impressive single specimen in the lawn. They may also be used to combine smaller shrubs, or as ground cover plants, to larger shrubs and small trees, to create informal groups. DEUTZIA 'STRAWBERRY FIELDS' - This is one of the best flowering shrubs for small gardens. Its branches are arching with clusters of pink flowers in summer. EXOCHORDA 'THE BRIDE' - This is wider than it is tall, and this mounded shrub is covered in pure white blossoms in spring and early summer.

It is a beautiful medium shrub. LAVATERA 'BARNSLEY' – All through the summer this semi-evergreen shrub carries a succession of lovely, pale pink, almost white, red-eyed flowers. The leaves are sage green and downy. PHILADELPHUS 'VIRGINAL' – A strong-growing shrub, this is deservedly one of the most popular due to its large abundance of richly double or semidouble white summer blooms. VIBURNUM PLICATUM 'MARIESII' – This elegant, spreading, layered plant carries neat, pleated leaves and, in early summer, lace-cap flowerheads that are white when the flower opens, turning pink with age. PIERIS 'FOREST FLAME' – The leaves of this upright shrub emerge crimson-red, then turn to pale-pink, then cream, before turning glossy green. The flowers hang in large bunches and appear in spring. WEIGELA 'FLORIDA VARIEGATA' – This is one of the most popular and easily grown shrubs with white-edged leaves that provide a nice back drop for its soft pink flowers in early summer. Loving this time of year, with new shoots coming through and the birds singing. Have a great month!

SPACED OUT

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. It’s often not appreciated that ensuring plants have sufficient space is critical to achieving quality crops. With most vegetables there are optimum spacing distances between plants to obtain good yields. Grow too closely and competition will lead to slow growth and smaller harvest size. Too close spacing can also encourage diseases, especially fungal ones, by restricting air circulation. As the spring sowing and planting season gets into full swing it’s worth spending some time thinking whether you have sufficient space for all the crops you want to grow. Some crops need a lot of room. Brussels sprouts, for example, are not the easiest crop, and need a good 60cm (two feet) between plants if you want to get strong growth with goodsized buttons. Most cabbages, except the small pointed and spring green types, also need to be grown at least 40cm apart.

SPUD SPACE Potatoes are another crop where spacing is important. Grow close together and the result will be generally small tubers. That’s fine for early potatoes which can be spaced as close as 35cm apart, but if it’s whoopers for baking that are required, much more generous spacing is necessary. Up to 50cm between plants and 75cm between rows is not too far for main crop varieties. The example of potatoes indicates how spacing

can be used to influence the size of vegetables at harvest. Take parsnips as another example. I like small roots about twice the size of a carrot. These seem sweeter than larger ones and are generally easier to dig up. Because I want smaller roots I tend to grow the plants quite close together, aiming to have them spaced about 10cm apart. Any closer and the roots can be too small and more likely to become intertwined.

THINNING To get the best spacing it can be necessary to ‘thin out’ plants as they grow. Thinning is mainly carried out on crops that are directly sown in the soil. It’s always better to sow generously than sow sparingly and have insufficient plants. For parsnips and similar direct sown crops such as beetroot and carrots, I sow seed quite thickly. As the seedlings grow I make several thinning sessions, generally trying to remove weaker plants until roughly the required spacing is achieved. Of course, thinning is fiddly, can disturb the plants if not done carefully and in some cases, such as with the carrots and carrot fly, increase the risk of pest attack. That’s why, unless it’s not really possible as with parsnips or carrots, I prefer to grow in pots or trays and plant out. That way no thinning is required and plants can be correctly spaced from the start.

It’s impossible here to run through the best spacing for all the crops you might want to grow, but there are numerous books and websites that can be referred to for further information. In many respects getting the right spacing is mainly common sense. The key point to remember is that closer generally equals smaller. So if you want mini veg or size isn’t important, close spacing may give the desired result. But be wary of overcrowding and suppressing growth so that plants are stunted and never produce a harvestable yield. Most of all keep in mind that spaced out plants are generally happier plants.

Keen to ‘get growing’ this year, but simply don’t have the space at home? An allotment is a great idea, but you might be put off by long waiting lists. Well, City of York Council are happy to announce that the waiting period for plots in Acomb, Holgate, Carr Allotments, and New Lane are now shorter than ever. You might just get to plant your first crop in time! n To find our more, call 553399.

Perfect Ponds Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish. In the springtime as the weather warms up and we get a little more sunshine, your garden pond might start to go green. If you have a pond filter now is the time to change your ultra violet bulb (UV bulb) if you haven’t done so this year. They are effective for about six months and it is this bulb that makes the algae clump together so it can be filtered out. Don’t have a filter? You can add a treatment to the pond that will get rid of your green water and doesn’t harm your fish. There are lots of different ones available and you might need to re-dose every few weeks through the summer; check the instructions on the one you choose. A great long term solution to green water is to add marginal plants to the pond as they use up the nutrients that feed the algae. Fast growing varieties that have roots in the pond but leaves that stick out are the best e.g. Flag Iris

(Iris pseudacorus). As well as staying clearer your pond will look prettier too. Don’t expect results this year though as the plants will take a while to get going. Blanket weed is the other thing pond keepers hate at this time of year. This is the long, stringy green algae that look like strands of hair. You can remove the worst of this by twirling it round a garden cane, a bit like candy floss, and then sliding it off and onto the compost heap. To stop it coming back you can use an anti-blanket weed treatment. The modern ones are a simple sachet that you drop in the pond each week over the summer to For advice call: keep it at bay.

Aww, April Fool’s Day... the one morning of the year when everyone is kind of expected to act like a cruel idiot. However, make sure your pranks don’t go too far, as these famous incidents from recent years did.

WHAT NOT TO JOKE ABOUT IN AMERICA In 2014 Angela Timmons, a college administrator in Spartanburg County, Virginia, thought she would play an April Fool’s trick on her daughter. She called her from work and said she could hear gunshots and screams throughout the college. Her daughter was so terrified about a potential school mass shooting (which we know are all too common state-side), she called the police. After a swat team descended on the college to find no such shooting taking place, Timmons was arrested and charged with aggravated breach of peace. Too right.

A TITANIC MESS A Southern FM DJ in Brighton thought he’d play a joke on his listeners in 2001, and reported that a replica of the Titanic was sailing by Beachy Head in Sussex. However, he didn’t expect hundreds of people to believe him, and some drove from as far away as 40 miles to spot the ship. So many people crowded onto the cliff top that morning that a huge crack was formed, and a section of the cliff collapsed and fell into the sea days later. The cliffs there are white. Like an iceberg. STRESSED OUT Glenn Howlett’s colleagues at City Hall in Ontario, Canada, thought they would play an April Fool’s trick on him while he was away on holiday, by calling him to say that the big report he was working on was due early. Glenn became so stressed that he collapsed from heart palpitations and was rushed to hospital.

There, he decided the pressures of the job was too much, and took early retirement. When he later found out it was merely a prank, he successfully sued his old company. There are now laws against work-based pranks in Ontario. TWEETING TWIT In 2015 the social media officer in charge of Greater Manchester Police’s Radcliffe account, thought it would be a laugh to tweet: “Know someone in prison? You can get them released early by voting for them on here. The prisoners with the most votes also wins a holiday.” Mmm... This caused a lot of upset, especially for those who did know someone in prison, but also for the people who started to vote! The joke was pushed even further when the the account tweeted: “I have been told it is two weeks in a five star hotel in Cyprus for two people and £500 spending money.” Needless to say, the bosses soon stepped in and an

LOCH NESS MORON On 1st April 1972 newspapers reported that the body of the Loch Ness Monster has washed up on the shores of the loch. Zoologists from Yorkshire’s own Flamingo Land were there to confirm the finding, displaying a photograph of the 15 foot long creature. Later, after the story had spread to the entire world, the education officer of Flamingo Land, John Shields, revealed the corpse was that of a seal that had died in the park a week before. John had kept the seal frozen, shaved it, and stuffed rocks into it’s mouth, before dumping it in the loch. Ha. Ha. Weirdly, the seal went on display in Flamingo Land for quite a while. The 70s were weird, man.

Eye care with VisionCare WITH an estimated 35 million smartphones in the UK and usage of tablets increasingly overtaking PCs and laptops, our mobile communication devices are here to stay. However, the human eye wasn’t designed for these 21st century gadgets, so it’s important to use them in moderation. The tiny lettering on smartphone screens can cause eye strain without appropriate spectacles or contact lenses. Reading glasses are often recommended for people over the age of 40 and today’s anti-stress and varifocal lenses can also help you to navigate those closely-packed lines of text. Devices like the Kindle e-reader replicate the appearance of a traditional book to reduce eye fatigue and they’re designed to be held at arm’s length – a useful tip for any mobile device.

48-50 Clarence Street, York YO31 7EW Phone: 01904 654460 enquiries@jgfielderandson.co.uk www.jgfielderandson.co.uk

We recommend that you never spend more than 20 minutes looking at a portable device without giving your eyes a minute or two to re-focus elsewhere. Also trying zooming in (by pinching two fingers on the screen and pulling them apart) whenever it’s possible to do so. Handheld gadgets can shrink their text to fit the available space, which can be impossible to read without pinching and zooming. Modern devices can increasingly be operated by voice control interfaces such as Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana, which can help reduce the amount of time spent looking at their small fonts. We’d also recommend adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, while sunscreens and anti-glare covers can prevent headaches being caused by reflections or bright sunlight. This latter issue may also be overcome by wearing sunglasses. Mild eye strain caused by overuse of mobile devices can be reduced by using eye drops or trying to blink more frequently. Because people tend to stare intently at computer screens, they blink less often than during other activities, so that this can accelerate the onset of dry eyes, visual fatigue and result in smarting eyes. To combat this, eye drop lubricants are available to aid comfort. For more advice on this issue, please contact VisionCare Optometry at www.wecare4your.vision and any recurring headaches or blurred vision should immediately be reported to us so that we can examine your eyes and identify possible causes. You can book your appointment on-line. Did you know? The world’s first smartphone was launched in 1994, combining email and cellphone capabilities. DIVA INTELLIGENT DIGITAL BEACH CURLS WAND £49.99 | www.sallyexpress.com

LEE STAFFORD CHOPSTICK STYLER

£19.99 | www.argos.com I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the chopstick styler. Bloggers have been all over this product as it creates tight ringletty curls,

I’ve used the beach curl wand a few times now and it hasn’t failed to deliver soft bouncy curls that gently drop after an hour or so to give you gorgeous beach babe curls. The curling tongs are versatile and can create different sizes depending on where you wrap your curls. To complete the beach babe look, I added salt spray and gave my curls a ruffle. This is a great tool as long as you can get your head round the unusual shape! 9/10.

Tested by H RPR MAKE ME CURLY £13.95 | www.boots.com Curl creams can sometimes feel heavy and overempowering on on my hair. But RPR defined my curls and didn’t weigh them down either. My hair felt soft where it would usually feel coarse and there was much less frizzyness than usual. The cream also made my hair look shiner and healtheir. I’ll be using this whenever I want to leave my hair in it’s natural form, for a low maintenance succesful curly barnet. Tested by Krystal

reminiscent of Ella Eyre’s fabulous barnet. It takes a couple of minutes to heat up, and is dead easy to use, just wrap thin stands of hair around the mini barrel and hold for a couple of seconds. Brilliant product, a time consuming task - depending on how many seperate curls you wanty to create. My hair looked absolutley fabulous and massive but my arms needed a week’s holiday after.

PHIL SMITH CURLY LOCKS RANGE £3.50 - £4 | Sainsbury’s The curl perfecting range from Phil Smith comprises of a shampoo, conditioner, spray and cream. I used the whole range in succession for maximum effect. My hair smelt great afterwards: floral undertones to a clean soapy scent. The conditioner and spray are pretty intense and my (usually dry) hair felt soft and bouncy once dried. My curls looked defined, albeit a bit looser than usual. I’ll definitely be using the range again. Tested by H •

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

ASK THE EXPERT

H A I R T O D A Y. . . Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she explains all about how to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Many of us, regardless of age or gender, end up with stretch marks at some point in our lives. They can be caused by rapid growth spurts due to hormonal changes in pregnancy or puberty, from HRT; or by general weight gain or loss. Despite stretch marks being extremely common, they can sometimes leave us lacking in confidence when it comes to baring skin. You don’t have to suffer in silence, there are a large range of treatments available that can reduce the appearance of stretch marks and leave you feeling more confident.

GENUINE DERMAPEN This treatment involves the use of micro-fine needles, which perforate the skin’s top layers and encourage blood to rise to the surface of the skin. This allows the skin to start to regenerate naturally, creating new collagen and elastin layers, which can help stretch marks to disappear, as well as improve the texture of your skin.

TCA PEEL This deep, exfoliating peel removes the top layer of skin, so that you’re left with the fresh, new skin underneath. This has the effect of smoothing stretch marks, and making them less visible. For

the best results, you should aim for a minimum of two-four peels.

DR MURAD CELLULITE AND STRETCH MARK TREATMENT I’m a big fan of Dr Murad’s treatments, and this one is particularly effective. It takes just 45 minutes, and can help to firm up and tone your body, whether you want to focus on your thighs, bottom, bust, upper arms or tummy.

SKIN TIGHTENING LASER This treatment uses infrared to help to firm up any loose skin you may have, helping you to regain more youthful contours. If you have stretch marks after weight loss, this treatment could help you to feel as amazing as you deserve to, after achieving your weight loss goal.

uses a precision laser rather than microfine needles. The laser creates thousands of microscopic perforations, which helps to stimulate new collagen, eventually leading to a better texture and tone for your skin.

Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. Visit www. skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.
