I’m happy and relieved to see spring bloom after what has been a long, tedious winter. York is a gorgeous place to be at this time of year and we know that better days are on the horizon.

The inspiration doesn’t stop there, we’re celebrating the concept of more is more in our maximalism inspired property feature and resident gardener, Tony Chalcraft, is growing shallots.

This issue we’re looking forward to Easter with some easy to execute recipes, and for sunnier days, we’ve listed some outdoor venues that are now open for visitors.

The Stamp Duty Land Tax HolidayHow does it affect me?

I am planning to buy a house in the next two months. Am I too late to benefit from the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday?

In the July 2020 Budget, The Chancellor introduced a Stamp Duty Land Tax “holiday” which increased the standard rate SDLT threshold from £125,000 to £500,000. This holiday was initially expected to end on 31st March 2021 but has now been extended until 30th June 2021.

Therefore, for anyone buying a residential dwelling completing before 1st July 2021, standard rate SDLT will not become payable until the consideration exceeds £500,000.

This has now been further extended and tapered so that parties paying residential SDLT between 1st July and 30th September 2021 will benefit from an increased standard rate threshold from £125,000 to £250,000.

As a result of the SDLT holiday, the residential market has become very busy and certain processes within a conveyancing transaction have significantly slowed down.

Therefore, whilst there is still time to benefit from the SDLT holiday, it would be advised to start as soon as possible to give yourself as much time as possible for the conveyancing process to be done properly.

I am buying an investment property through my company.

Will I be able to benefit from the SDLT holiday?

During the SDLT holiday, the standard rate SDLT threshold has been increased to £500,000 before 1st July 2021 and will come down to £250,00 until 1st October 2021. This will benefit all parties buying residential property in England.

However, where a company buys residential property for more than £40,000 there is currently a 3% surcharge payable in addition to standard rate SDLT. This surcharge has not changed during the current “holiday” and it is still payable unless the transaction falls under one of the HMRC exemptions.

I understand that there is a new SDLT rate payable for non-residents. What is this?

From the 1st April 2021, new rates of SDLT will apply to purchases of residential dwellings by individuals and companies who are not resident in the UK. If a purchaser is not present in the UK for at least 183 days during the 12 months before their purchase, then they will be classed as not resident in the UK and their transaction will be subject to a 2% surcharge payable over the total consideration.

Corporate buyers are non-UK resident if they are not UK resident for Corporation Tax purposes at the effective date of the transaction.

Doing that will really help our advertisers make great decisions about where to advertise.

THE FOSS, BOOTHAM STRAY AND CLIFTON BACKIES

Starting just north of the city centre, this walk of about six miles offers a tour of some of York’s lesser known green spaces. After following the River Foss upstream for about two miles, it takes field paths to Bootham Stray, the least well-known of the city’s four strays. Exploring the stray on both sides of Wigginton Road, the route then ventures into the under-appreciated Clifton Backies, a local nature reserve. A short stretch on streets follows before the final stretch heads along a traffic-free cycle route.

Some sections of this route, especially alongside the Foss at the start and on the way to Bootham Stray, may be very muddy. Appropriate footwear is essential. a slightly raised bank following the Foss as it loops left to another kissing gate. The recommended starting point is the roundabout at the junction of Haxby Road and Haley’s Terrace near the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

If driving, limited roadside parking is available on nearby streets. Alternative starting points include the Link Road bridge at New Earswick and the Wigginton Road/ Crichton Avenue junction. The recommended starting point is easily reached by bus from the city centre, both routes 1 and 5 stopping on Haxby Road opposite the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. Bus 1 also serves New Earswick while Crichton Avenue can be reached by bus route 6.

Refreshments For light refreshments on the route, there’s the Hound Lounge at Station Avenue New Earswick (closed Mon. and Wed.) and The Coffee House on Crichton Avenue.

Slightly off route is the café at New Earswick Folk Hall and the Blacksmith’s Arms in Huntington village.

What to see A surprising amount of wildlife can be seen on the Foss. For more information, see The River Foss Society website (www.riverfosssociety.co.uk/wildlife-on-thefoss-2/). Bootham Stray is mainly open grassland with a remote feel. The section west of Wigginton Road is more enclosed and diverse with new tree plantings and hedgerows. Clifton Backies nature reserve was formerly part of Clifton Airfield. It contains a diverse range of habitats and is one of the best nature sites near the city centre. 5 Cross straight over the road (Wigginton Road) and go through the kissing gate opposite. Cross the field heading towards a gap in the hedge. In the next field do not go right on a faint grassy track towards buildings but head slightly left over the grass towards a gate in the bush line. Go through the gate, entering Clifton Backies, and follow the hard-surfaced path as it leads through scrubby trees.

Ignore all ways off, soon passing an open grassy area on the left to a crossing tarmac cycle/footpath.

Turn left here following the tarmac to a street accessed through a gap in metal railings. Go down the

street to the roundabout and go straight across into Crichton Avenue passing shops to the right. Head up over the railway to approach traffic lights at the junction with Wigginton Road.

6 Just before the lights take the signed path on the right going down steps by blue barriers to the cycle track. Go left, under the bridge and continue on the trail. Approaching the next bridge go left up the slope signed ‘Haxby Road North’ to join Haxby Road. Turn left here for 200 metres back to the recommended starting point at the roundabout with Haley’s Terrace.

go to the left to find a stile in the corner alongside the railway line. After crossing the stile, continue ahead alongside the railway to the left. The route can now be muddy and wet in places. Pass through several kissing gates and by a field of tall miscanthus grass on the right to eventually enter grassy Bootham Stray. Keep the railway line on the left until reaching a shallow ditch and hedge running across to the right with a few isolated trees visible in the grass beyond. Here veer right away from the railway heading just to the right of the trees. A grass track coming from a railway crossing on the left will soon be seen. Take this right to a gate in the hedge by a road.

TIME TO CHANGE Steve Popple of Antique Restoration, York, starred as one of the experts on Channel Four’s programme, Mend It for Money recently.

Filmed in Glasgow, the show takes a dive into the world of collectables, antiques and restoration.

Guests bring their artefacts to Britain’s best makers and menders in the hopes of restoring them and making a profit.

In the series, Steve repairs a commode, a haberdashery unit and his personal favourite, a gentleman’s compactum: “The gentleman’s compactum is a fantastic piece from a bygone era.

From the 1920s: it’s for a proper English gentleman. It’s a wardrobe that has special compartments for everything you even have a special place for your opera hat. These things just don’t exist anymore,” said Steve.

For each of the restoration projects, two of the country’s top craftspeople will compete to get the job: pitching their plans and estimating how much profit the item will make when sold and agreeing to a share with the owner.

The show narrator, Tom Allen, summarised it neatly: “It’s basically restorers competing to do up furniture and sell it for the most profit.

It’s like Antiques Roadshow with the added fun of capitalism.”

Since the show, Steve has been recognised by his existing customers and has got some new customers, too.

Up-cycling has become incredibly popular of late, but Steve and his colleagues at Antique Restoration have been doing this for a long time: “This new idea of up-cycling, we’ve been doing it for 30 years.

That’s what we do. When people have furniture that’s a bit tatty and might end up in a skip, well if we can breathe some more life into it without felling any more trees, it’s got to be a good thing for the planet.”

And what’s more, it’s not as expensive as people might think: “I think it’s important that people get to see that we’re not actually colossally expensive. There is the assumption of ‘oh it’s antiques, it’s going to be expensive,’ it’s not - I don’t drive a Ferrari!”

Time to Change York is a group of residents, employers and employees coming together to help end mental health stigma and discrimination in York through a series of projects that use creativity to change attitudes and beliefs towards people with experience of mental illness.

This could be through poetry, video, radio interviews and projects focussing on stigmatising language.

There’s also an employers’ group that is focussing on ending stigma and discrimination in the workplace.

York CVS is looking for anyone (from CEOs to retirees) with or without experience of mental ill-health to get involved and help create mentally healthy workplaces.

The handling of the pandemic by the National League is on the agenda this month for our resident sports writer and York City F.C. fan, Simon Pattinson.

Hello and welcome to a new column in 2021. Not only does it feel like it's been a while since I last spoke to you, but the same can also be said about seeing any sporting action.

York City played their first-ever fixture against AFC Fylde at the LNER Community Stadium. A game result, that ended in defeat and a result that given the decision to null and void the season, now technically no longer exists. And quite frankly, I'm happy about that! It was never the way to see in a new era at the new stadium, not to mention fans not being able to be there. York City’s season has been so stop-start since it began back in October and unsurprisingly, the National League made a massive mess of the financial packages and now they have ended the season with nothing.

The way the National League has dealt with these situations over the past year leaves me feeling less and less confident with the way they have gone about it all: putting many teams at risk for a variety of reasons. The time it has taken to make decisions has left fans and clubs feeling angry and unsupported. It's not the way it should

be and I know it's been uncertain times, but these are the times where you need the people who make decisions to step up. They have failed to do so in my opinion. The mini-league idea, suggested by fellow National League North and South clubs who wished to fulfil their league season, being rejected is a fine example of that. Whether you agree with the idea or not, it felt like a bitter pill to swallow and a decision that could seem like a slap in the face to deliver any integrity to the league pyramid.

Now it is time to put the season behind us and prepare for the new one and welcome crowds into the new stadium and with those steps in place to allow that to happen in the summer will be an incredible sight for City fans and football fans up and down the country being allowed in to see their teams once again. Questions are being asked about the team and manager Steve Watson as to whether they are good enough to get us out of this league, frankly, I say now is a time to back him and Steve Watson and judge this squad in a season where we are not so stop-start, perhaps a few stronger

additions and one or two centre forwards who will score goals is what this side is crying out for if there was anything to take from this season it would certainly be that.

The York City Knights also played at the LNER Stadium for the first time in March and what an exciting time it is to be a Knights fan. They were back in action in a friendly against Hull FC in a close encounter that ended in a

22-28 defeat. For their first game in nearly a year, it was an incredible game and an excellent performance. I think many will have seen so many signs to be positive, and with the side that James Ford has put together, there is a real possibility that Super League could truly be in their grasp this year when the season starts in a few weeks.

York City Football Club Foundation is offering kids over the age of 8 the opportunity to ‘Get Pitch Ready’ through a series of fun, fitness and ball mastery sessions. The new Get Pitch Ready sessions are open to all young people, not just those who have previously attended programmes.

Throughout lockdown, The Foundation continued to engage with young people on a weekly basis and stay connected with them and their families. Zoom sessions were designed to focus on social interactions.

RUNNING A BUSINESS AT YOU MIGHT FROM HOME: WH NEED TO KNOW This pesky pandemic has been an incredibly tough time for business in general, but it’s also been an exciting time for many people setting up their own businesses from home.

If you’re new to operating a business from your home, Simon Roberts, Senior Associate Solicitor from DAS Law has outlined some rules that might apply to you.

Q. Do I need permission to set up my business from home?

You will need to consider who you will need to obtain permission from to run a business from your home.

If you are renting the property you will need to get permission from your landlord and check the tenancy agreement. If you have a mortgage on your home, you may need permission from your mortgage provider.

If running a business from your home is unlikely to cause any disruption to your neighbours, it is unlikely that you will need planning permission. For example, if your business is largely run by you alone from the computer in your office, this is unlikely to affect anyone.

However, you may need planning permission if your business will require or

cause any of the following: •Noticeable increase in people coming to the home (customers, for example); • A sign outside to draw attention to the business; • Storage of things related to the business on the outside of the property; or • Any other activities that wouldn’t be expected in a residential area.

You should talk to your local council or planning office if you have any doubts over whether or not your business will need planning permission.

Q. How does working from home affect my tax?

If part of your home is used exclusively for business purposes, you will need to pay business rates on that part of the property – for example, if part of your home is used as a shop and nothing else.

But if you are running a business on your computer from your bedroom, or your office can also be used as a living area, you would not need to pay these taxes on your bedroom or office.

Q. How does working from home affect my self-assessment tax return?

If you are a sole trader or part of a

business partnership, you can use what is known as simplified expenses if you work for 25 hours or more from home. This means you can pay a flat rate for some of your business expenses, rather than working out exactly how much of your home bills were spent on business.

Doing this, you can claim back a portion of your household costs, such as council tax, heating and internet bills, based on how many hours you spent working at home each month.

Q. What insurance do I need?

It is likely that your home or contents insurance will not cover aspects of your business if you are working from home, particularly if you are storing a large amount of stock or you have customers entering the premises.

If you have customers or other members of the public entering your home, you will need public liability insurance. You will also need employer’s liability insurance if you have employees working on the premises.

Not many gardeners grow shallots nowadays. It’s another crop that’s gone out of fashion. This is a pity as shallots are one of the easiest vegetables to grow. I’ve never known them fail to produce a worthwhile crop.

Shallots are, of course, closely related to onions, leeks and garlic. All are members of the allium family. Like garlic, shallots grow in clusters. Although shallots can be grown from seed, it’s far easier to grow them, as with onions, from sets (baby bulbs). Unlike onions where the set swells but stays a singleton, shallot sets multiply producing additional bulbs as they develop (e.g. the ‘parent’ set put in the ground develops offshoots). At harvest, a well-grown plant or clump can yield eight to ten individual bulbs.

Cold tolerant shallot sets can be planted in November but getting them in the ground when the worst of the winter weather has past is the more usual, and reliable, practice.

Unless the soil is very wet or frozen I aim to plant in March. Planting is much the same as for onion sets. Using a trowel or dibber the shallot set is placed in the soil so just the tip is poking above the surface. Spacing should

be more generous than with onion sets, about 25cm apart is the minimum distance.

Much closer and competition between plants will lead to smaller bulbs at harvest.

Because the sets are planted early when conditions can be cold it may take some time for some of the sets to shoot. Fear not though, it’s unusual for all but a handful not to sprout.

Once a spiky cluster of green shoots appear and begin growing there’s not much to do other than keep down weeds which, as with onions, can swamp the crop if not controlled.

Shallots planted in early spring should be ready for harvesting from mid-July. When the foliage starts to yellow and dieback each clump should be carefully lifted with a fork and the bulbs gently prised apart.

The key then is to get the bulbs dry. I do this on staging in a greenhouse leaving them for up to a month. Where covered space is unavailable resting the uprooted bulbs on the soil is an option if there’s no heavy rain. Once completely dry the bulbs can be stored. Larger ones can be strung in plaits in the same way as onions and kept in a cool, dry and airy place. For smaller bulbs where stringing is impractical net bags can be used.

Tony Chalcraft Another option for smaller bulbs, if you’re prepared for much peeling, is pickling.

Although it’s best to get shallots in the ground in early March there’s still time up until the beginning of April if sets are available. Several varieties are commonly offered.

My recommendation would be the reddish-brown skinned Red Sun. I’ve grown this for several years and find it gives more uniform and better keeping bulbs than some other varieties.

It also seems less prone to bolting (sprouting a seed head instead of forming a bulb). Just as importantly it tastes good, having a mild but slightly spicy flavour suitable for salads as well as cooking.

New chapter for York charity York Against Cancer has got the keys to its brand-new, purpose-built headquarters at the LNER Community Stadium in Huntington.

Preparations are well under way to create an exciting new gift and card shop and to fit out a modern workplace for York Against Cancer’s six full and part-time office staff, who are currently based at North Moor Road, Huntington.

Julie said York Against Cancer hoped to complete its move within three months, opening a new chapter in the charity’s 30-plus years of providing local cancer care, research and education.

“This is huge for us,” said Julie. “It is a massive step forward that will put us in front of a brand-new audience and give us a springboard into the future.

“We’ll have great visibility that we hope
