Aaaaaaand relax...

yorkboat

actually, don't. if you're in this great city of York at this time of year because you think that everything will have now calmed down after the chaos of the summer, think again chum. Just because the weather is cooling off, doesn't mean our desire to be as busy as possible has, and september is just as jam-packed as august, July, and June combined. here in York we realised a long time ago that if you start taking it easy in the autumn you'll soon come grinding to a halt. That's usually when frostbite sets in and wolves come prowling... not to mention the frustrated woolly mammoths. sure, that realisation took place during the last ice age, but the simple fact has permeated through the millennia; you stop, you die!

and so september sees York really kick it into fifth gear, with a month crammed with fantastically amazing things to do. events, exhibitions, festivals, shows, and not to mention just generally being in a gorgeous city to soak up all that loveliness. we're also happy to announce that we've managed to get rid of almost all of the hungry wolves, so rest easy in ye beds. whatever you're to in York this month, be sure to keep this copy of what's on handy. we recommend stowing it in your bag or rucksack, or even giving it a single fold and ramming it into your pocket. These simple and humble pages are the key to having a fun month...

Discover talented studio potters at Ceramic Art York

WHERE: Ceramic Art York, Museum Gardens, York WHEN: 9 - 11 September 2016 A three-day showcase of the UK’s best studio potters will take place over the Museum Gardens on the second weekend in September. Ceramic Art York will offer collectors, shoppers and enthusiasts the opportunity to explore a wide range of studio ceramics, ranging from beautifully made home ware to large sculptural pieces. Meet some of the most talented makers working today, whose styles range from traditional to cutting-edge contemporary practice Names to watch out for include: 6

Antonia Salmon, whose ceramic sculptures capture a sense of an inner stillness and structure; qualities that are inherent in the natural world from which she draws inspiration. An established artist her work is held in many important worldwide collections. Jin Eui Kim who explores the perception of threedimensional ceramic through the applications of tonal bands on their surfaces Ashraf Hanna creates both individual and related groups of vessels, within which each object informs the next, with the sculptural aspect much in evidence. Peter Beard a maker of vessels and sculptural pieces. Richly glazed, his forms can have an almost sentinel and totemic presence, the shapes elemental, the glazing iridescent

and luminous. Ruth King, one of Britain’s pre-eminent salt glaze potters. Her vessels bear stunning salt glazed tones ranging from rich rusts to luminous greens and silvery greys showing how sculptural and elemental modern ceramics can be. For those wanting to learn more there is also an exciting programme of talks, discussions, and demonstrations being planned. Friday 9th September, 10am-6pm / Saturday 10th September, 10am-6pm / Sunday 11 September, 10am-5pm

THE MINSTER QUARTER

No, not one of the four sticky-out bits of the Minster, but rather the name of the area of the city around the cathedral. It’s a fascinating spot, choked full of history. We delve in for a look-see. the Minster Quarter essentially comprises all the land around the cathedral, including High and Low Petergates, Stonegate, Grape Lane and Goodramgate. It has been the very epicentre of the city, searching way back to the founding of York.

“This'll do, lads.” in 71ce the romans arrived. having already established quite a fancy city down south (we forget the name. Lond-something?) they decoded to push their presence into the north of

10

Britannia. This gorgeous bit of the country was selected for their legionary fortress of eboracum, mostly because the two rivers, the ouse and the Foss, provided cover on two sides from the hostile locals. They built their headquarters building, the principia, on the site now occupied by that massive church, while establishing stonegate and petergate as the main roads through the fortress.

“Quick, baptise me!” But why is a cathedral here at all? well, in 627 the king of these parts, edwin of northumbria, really wanted to marry the christian princess aethelburh of kent. he asked paulinus, a roman missionary who aethelburh had brought with her (handy, that!) to baptise him. a small wooden church was built somewhere in the ruins of the roman

principia for the purpose, which was later rebuilt and added to, creating the first minster. it was burnt down several times after that, mostly by cheeky vikings. Those guys!

“Right, knock that rubbish down!” and then normans arrived. Fancying themselves as the new roman empire, the normans came in after 1066 and changed everything. They knocked down our minster and built a huge new romanesque cathedral in it's place, installing their own archbishop within it. since then the the minster has been enlarged, modernised (if you consider the 1220s modern) and rebuilt to result in what you see looming over you today... as you wander around the minster Quarter. enjoy!
